Blue-Emissive Antioxidant Carbon Dots Enhance Drought Resistance of Pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Prolonged drought conditions are a critical challenge for agricultural advancement, threatening food security and environmental equilibrium. To overcome these issues, enhancing plant resilience to drought is essential for plant growth and sustainable agriculture. In this study, blue-emitting antioxidant carbon dots (B-CDs), synthesized from citric acid and ascorbic acid, emerged as a promising solution to enhance the drought resistance of peas (Pisum sativum L.). B-CDs can efficiently scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are harmful in excess to plants under stress conditions. Through detailed experimental analyses and density functional theory (DFT) studies, it is found that these B-CDs possess structures featuring eight-membered aromatic rings with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, providing active sites for reactions with ROS. The practical benefits of the B-CDs are evident in tests with pea plants exposed to drought conditions. These plants show a remarkable reduction in ROS accumulation, an increase in photosynthetic efficiency due to improved electron transfer rates, and significant growth enhancement. Compared to untreated controls under drought stress, the application of B-CDs results in an impressive increase in the fresh and dry weights of both the shoots and roots of pea seedlings by 39.5 and 43.2% for fresh weights and 121.0 and 73.7% for dry weights, respectively. This suggests that B-CDs can significantly mitigate the negative effects of drought on plants. Thus, leveraging B-CDs opens a novel avenue for enhancing plant resilience to abiotic stressors through nanotechnology, thereby offering a sustainable pathway to counter the challenges of drought in agriculture.

Genetic improvement of Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) for high yield and fiber quality properties under semi arid conditions

Between 2016 and 2018, the Agriculture Research Center's Sakha Agriculture Research Station conducted two rounds of pedigree selection on a segregating population of cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) using the F2, F3, and F4 generations resulting from crossing Giza 94 and Suvin. In 2016, the top 5% of plants from the F2 population were selected based on specific criteria. The superior families from the F3 generation were then selected to produce the F4 families in 2017, which were grown in the 2018 summer season in single plant progeny rows and bulk experiments with a randomized complete block design of three replications. Over time, most traits showed increased mean values in the population, with the F2 generation having higher Genotypic Coefficient of Variance (GCV) and Phenotypic Coefficient of Variance (PCV) values compared to the succeeding generations for the studied traits. The magnitude of GCV and PCV in the F3 and F4 generations was similar, indicating that genotype had played a greater role than the environment. Moreover, the mean values of heritability in the broad sense increased from generation to generation. Selection criteria I2, I4, and I5 were effective in improving most of the yield and its component traits, while selection criterion I1 was efficient in improving earliness traits. Most of the yield and its component traits showed a positive and significant correlation with each other, highlighting their importance in cotton yield. This suggests that selecting to improveone or more of these traits would improve the others. Families number 9, 13, 19, 20, and 21 were the best genotypes for relevant yield characters, surpassing the better parent, check variety, and giving the best values for most characters. Therefore, the breeder could continue to use these families in further generations as breeding genotypes to develop varieties with high yields and its components.

Development of photoluminescent viscose fibers integrated with polymer containing lanthanide-doped phosphor

Smart clothing refers to textiles that can sense an external stimulus by changing their physical properties such as colorimetric and fluorescent fabrics. The pad-dry-curing coloration approach was used to apply a luminous and hydrophobic composite coating onto cellulose-based materials. This novel method includes incorporating phosphor nanoparticles made from lanthanide-doped strontium aluminum oxide (LSAO) into room temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber (RTV). The LSAO nano-sized particles (3-8 nm) must be mixed evenly throughout RTV without aggregation to allow for the formation of a colorless layer onto viscose surface. Pad-dry-curing the film onto viscose cloth worked well at room temperature. The contact angles of the luminous fibers enhanced from 138.6° to 158.2° as the LSAO ratio increased. The antimicrobial and ultraviolet (UV) protection of the LSAO-finished viscose were investigated. The transparent fluorescent film on viscose surface was excited at 367 nm to display an emission peak at 518 nm. According to CIE Lab coordinates and luminescence analyses, the fluorescent viscose fibers showed various colors, including white under visible light, intense green beneath UV device, and greenish-yellow under darkness. The comfort properties of the LSAO-finished viscose were assessed by measuring their bend length and permeability to air. Transmission electron microscopic analysis of LSAO nanoparticles was explored. Energy dispersive x-ray, x-ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to describe the spectroscopic outcomes of the treated textiles. The colorfastness of the LSAO-finished viscose fabrics was examined. The coated fabrics exhibited a non-fatigable reversible luminous photochromism in response to UV illumination. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Multifunctional LSAO@RTV nanocomposite was pad-dry-cured onto viscose textile. Photochromism to green under UV light and greenish-yellow in the dark was detected. Efficient antimicrobial, UV protective, and superhydrophobic activity were observed. The antimicrobial properties were maintained for 24 washing cycles. Pad-dry-cured viscose showed good comfortability and photostability.

Gold versus platinum for chemical modification of carbon quantum dots from carboxymethyl cellulose: Tunable biomedical performance

Urgent requirements for medication from chronic inflammation and cancer are considerably interested, while, the recent reports were considered with investigating simple methods for synthesis. Metal-modified carbon quantum dots ("M-CQDs") were successfully ingrained from carboxymethyl cellulose under the assistance of infra-red irradiation. The current approach demonstrates a study for the effect of structural tuning for biomedical performance of CQDs via modifying of CQDs with either gold (Au-CQDs) or platinum (Pt-CQDs). Successive nucleation of Au-CQDs and Pt-CQDs was confirmed via different instrumental analyses like, TEM micrographs, Zeta potential, XRD, FTIR, 1HNMR& 13CNMR spectra. The data reveal that, modification of CQDs (8.7 nm) with gold was reflected in insignificant effect on the mean size of CQDs (8.9 nm), whereas, doping of platinum resulted in slight enlargement of the size (12.4 nm). However, Pt-CQDs were exhibited with the highest anti-inflammatory (cell viability percent 78 %) and antimicrobial action. On the other hand, Au-CQDs were shown with the highest anticancer affinity (reduction of cell viability 83 %) compared to the others. The current study approved the superiority of CQDs modified with either gold or platinum to be successfully applicable as potential therapeutic reagents for the treatment of either cancer or inflammation diseases.

Carbon quantum dots derived from polysaccharides: Chemistry and potential applications

Since the beginning of 21th century, nanoscience and nanotechnology become the most promising topics in various fields, attributing to the superior characters of nanoscaled structures. The conventional quantum dots are substituted with new family of luminescent nanostructures, owing to their interchanged optical properties, low-cost of fabrication, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, ecofriendly, hydrophilicity and superior chemical stability. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were recently investigated for their simple synthesis, bio-consonance, and different revelation applicability. Obeying the green chemistry aspects, this review demonstrates an overview about CQDs generated from polysaccharides in brief, with a background on CQDs discovery, chemical composition, green synthesis via exploitation of different polysaccharides (cellulose, starch, pectin, chitin, etc) as biocompatible/biodegradable abundant biopolymers. Additionally, applications of CQDs originated from polysaccharides in environmental purposes, textiles industry and medical activities were also presented.

Pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile derivatives as sprout for CQDs proveniences: Antitumor and anti-inflammatory potentiality

A comparative study is proposed to show the effect of variation in the heteroatoms in the main skeleton of CQDs proveniences, on their affinity for nucleation of CQDs, as anti-inflammatory and anticancer drugs. Heterocyclic-based CQDs sprout was successfully exploited for preparation of three CQDs proveniences, named as; 2-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-4,6-dioxo-6,11-dihydro-4H-pyrimido[2,1-b] quinazoline-3-carbonitrile (compound A), 2-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzo[e]pyrimido[2,1-b][1,3]oxazine-3-carbonitrile (compound S) and 2-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzo[e]pyrimido[2,1-b][1,3] thiazine-3-carbonitrile (compound T). Chemical formulas of CQDs proveniences & CQDs were verified via FTIR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR & XRD. Particle size of TM-CQDs, A-CQDs, S-CQDs & T-CQDs were estimated to be 3.7 ± 1.4, 4.6 ± 1.6, 5.9 ± 1.6 nm and 3.0 ± 1.3 nm, respectively. All of CQDs proveniences & CQDs were examined for their affinity as anti-inflammatory drugs via Griess assay. CQDs ingrained from TM (TM-CQDs) were detected with the highest NO inhibition% by increasing its concentration from 10 up to 100 μM to be 40 % to 89 %, respectively. Moreover, their anti-tumor performance against MCF-7: breast Adenocarcinoma cell line was approved via sulforhodamine B assay, whereas, IC50 was evaluated for TM-CQDs, A-CQDs, S-CQDs and T-CQDs to be 38.16, 36.09, 100 and 100 μg/ml, respectively.

Involvement of silver and palladium with red peanuts skin extract for cotton functionalization

A systematic study is currently demonstrated approach for approving the superior role of silver and palladium metallic particles in acting the role of mordant with acquiring the dyed cotton fabrics excellence in color fastness with additional functions of antimicrobial potentiality and UV-protection action. Whereas, samples were dyed with extract of red peanuts skin as natural textile colorant (RPN dye). The represented data revealed that, in absence of mordant, the samples treated with metal precursors prior to dyeing were exhibited with the excellent color strength, color fastness, antimicrobial action and UV-protection action. Color fastness (washing, rubbing and light fastness) was estimated to be in the range of very good-excellent. Sample pretreated with silver salt and dyed in the absence of mordant was graded with excellent UV-protection action (UPF 31.5, UVB T% 2.6% and UVB blocking percent 97.4%). Antimicrobial potency against E. coli, S. aureus and Candida albicans through inhibition zone and the reduction percent was approved to be in the range of excellence (93.01-99.51%) for the samples dyed in absence of mordant and pretreated with either silver or palladium precursors.

Estimating the combining ability and genetic parameters for growth habit, yield, and fiber quality traits in some Egyptian cotton crosses

It is crucial to understand how targeted traits in a hybrid breeding program are influenced by gene activity and combining ability. During the three growing seasons of 2015, 2016, and 2017, a field study was conducted with twelve cotton genotypes, comprised of four testers and eight lines. Thirty-two F1 crosses were produced in the 2015 breeding season using the line x tester mating design. The twelve genotypes and their thirty-two F1 crosses were then evaluated in 2016 and 2017. The results demonstrated highly significant differences among cotton genotypes for all the studied traits, showing a wide range of genetic diversity in the parent genotypes. Additionally, the line-x-tester interaction was highly significant for all traits, suggesting the impact of both additive and non-additive variations in gene expression. Furthermore, the thirty-two cotton crosses showed high seed cotton output, lint cotton yield, and fiber quality, such as fiber length values exceeding 31 mm and a fiber strength above 10 g/tex. Accordingly, selecting lines and testers with high GCA effects and crosses with high SCA effects would be an effective approach to improve the desired traits in cotton and develop new varieties with excellent yield and fiber quality.

High-performance carboxymethyl cellulose-based composite film tailored by versatile zeolitic imidazolate framework

Robust biopolymer-based composite film with multifunctional performances significantly contributes to the packaging field. Herein, we proposed a sort of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based composite film via incorporating versatile zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) materials. Compared to pristine CMC film, the OTR, WVTR, and tensile strength of CMC/ZIF composite film with 1 wt ‰ Zn/Co-ZIF were improved from 64.89 cm³*μm/(m²*d*kPa), 1579.21 g/(m²*24h) and 16.9 MPa to 20.79 cm³*μm/(m²*d*kPa), 1209.58 g/(m²*24h) and 70.1 MPa, respectively. Notably, owing to the reduced band gap and intrinsic chemical and thermal stability of Zn/Co-ZIF, the fabricated Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC composite film presented well UV protection capability within the whole UV region and excellent UV-blocking durability after being exposed to UV-light at 365 nm for 12 h. In practice, the photocatalytic degradation of RhB solutions under UV light could be effectively suppressed when using Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC film as UV protection layer. Our findings proposed the potential application of these versatile ZIF materials as functional nanofiller within biopolymer substances for UV protection and transparent packaging area.

Functionalization of cellulosic and polyester textiles using reduced Schiff base (RSB) of eco-friendly vanillin

Vanillin is an active ingredient found in the crop 'vanilla' and is traditionally extracted from the 'vanilla pod'. Vanillin intrinsically is not a suitable candidate for imparting durable functional features into textile substate due to its smaller chemical structure which leads to leaching of the same during washing operation. To enlarge the structure, in the present study, vanillin has been converted into 4-(benzylamino) methyl))-2-methoxyphenol vanillin derivative (reduced Schiff base) with considerable amount of yield by using a simple one-step process and the synthesized product has been characterized by 1H, C13 NMR, FTIR, and Raman analysis. Thereafter, the reduced Schiff base of vanillin (RSB) has been integrated on cotton as well as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric using high temperature high pressure (HT-HP) technique for imparting multiple functionalities. FESEM EDX analysis has confirmed the integration of RSB on both the fabrics by revealing uniform presence of the nitrogen (of the synthesized derivative) on the treated textile materials. Both types of functionalized textiles have demonstrated appealing color shades with an excellent antimicrobial activity of about 90% against Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. The treated fabrics could cater pleasing fragrance and exhibit 90% antioxidant properties. Moreover, enlarged vanillin derivative in the form of RSB can retain its properties in the fabrics even after repeated machine launderings. RSB-treated cotton fabric has shown ultra-violet protection factor (UPF) of 38 which drops to 24 after washing whereas in case of PET treated fabric, the observed UPF values are 265 and 164 before and after washing, respectively. The RSB treatment has been found to be cytotoxically secure and biocompatible as tested on the PET fabric. Other required properties of the treated fabrics such as water absorbency, flexibility, etc. have also been found to be intact. Thus, the presented study reveals a new class of safe material that can be derived from eco-friendly vanillin and has the potential to replace hazardous chemicals that are currently used in textile chemical processing industries.

In vitro and in vivo toxicological evaluation of carbon quantum dots originating from Spinacia oleracea

Food-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs) can relatively easily be synthesized and chemically manipulated for a broad spectrum of biomedical applications. However, their toxicity may hinder their actual use. Here, Spinacia oleracea-derived CQDs i.e., CQD-1 and CQD-2, were synthesized by means of different shredding methods and followed by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. Subsequently, these CQDs were analyzed in vitro and in an in vivo mice model to test their biocompatibility and potential use as bioimaging agents and for activation of osteogenic differentiation. When comparing CQD-1 and CQD-2, it was found that CQD-1 exhibited 7.6 times higher photoluminescent (PL) emission intensity around 411 nm compared to CQD-2. Besides, it was found that the size distribution of CQD-1 was 2.05 ± 0.08 nm, compared with 2.14 ± 0.04 nm for CQD-2. Upon exposure to human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) in vitro, CQD-1 was endocytosed into the cytoplasm and significantly increased the differentiation of hBMSCs up to 10 μg mL^-1 after 7 and 14 days. Apparently, the presence of relatively low doses of CQD-1 showed virtually no toxic or histological effects in the major organs in vivo. In contrast, high doses of CQD-1 (1 mg mL^-1) caused cell death in vitro ranging from 35% on day 1 to 80% on day 3 post-exposure, and activated the apoptotic machinery and increased lymphocyte aggregates in the liver tissue. In conclusion, S. oleracea-derived CQDs have the potential for biomedical applications in bioimaging and activation of stem cells osteogenic differentiation. Therefore, it is postulated that CQD-1 from S. oleracea remains potential prospective material at appropriate doses and specifications.

Carbon dot based sensing platform for real-time imaging Cu2+ distribution in plants and environment

Divalent copper is a double-edged sword for plants, excess or shortage of copper ions will cause adverse reactions in plants. Currently, Cu2+ sensor for plants is still underdeveloped and new technology is urgently required for realizing one-step and real-time detection of Cu2+ in plants. Herein, a home-made and low-cost sensing platform is constructed by using carbon dots (CDs) as the optical probe, electronic devices for image acquisition, and a built-in algorithm program for image processing, which allows the dynamic monitoring of Cu2+ distribution in different plant species with high spatial and temporal resolution. We found that the detection limit of R-CDs for Cu2+ in water sample was 0.375 nM, and 11.7 mg/kg or even less Cu2+ in plants can be visually observed and accurately detected by the sensing platform. Moreover, this sensing platform has also been employed for reporting the spatial distribution of Cu2+ in the external environment of plants, demonstrating its applicability for monitoring Cu2+ both in living plants and the surrounding environment. This study provides a smart sensing platform for precise detection in plant internal and external environments, offering a promising strategy for precision agriculture in real-time and remote-control manners.

Microspheres of Si@Carbon-CNTs composites with a stable 3D interpenetrating structure applied in high-performance lithium-ion battery

The huge volumetric expansion (>300 %) of Si that occurs during the charge-discharge process makes it to have poor cycling ability and weak stable structure. These factors are considered as critical obstacles to the further development of Si as anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, novel 3D interpenetrating microspheres, i.e., Si@C-CNTs, which consist of silicon nanoparticles interpenetrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and stuck with amorphous carbon (C) have been designed and prepared via a spray-drying assisted approach. As anode of LIBs, Si@C-CNTs microspheres can achieve high silicon loadings of around 86 % and a high initial coulomb efficiency of 80.8 %. The electrodes maintain a reversible specific capacity of 1585.9mAh/g at 500 mA g-1 after 200 cycles, and deliver an excellent rate capability of 756.4 mAh/g at 5 A g-1. The outstanding performance of Si@C-CNTs can be due to their 3D interpenetrating structure and the synergy effect between the CNTs network and amorphous carbon therein. They synergistically act as conductive matrices which significantly improve the conductivity of the composite; they also act binders and reinforcing skeleton which help the composite spheres to have stable structure. Especially, the latter (reinforcing skeleton) alleviates the volumetric effect induced by the expansion and shrinkage of silicon particles during lithiation. The unique architecture provides an ideal model that can be used to design Si-based composite anode for advanced LIBs.

ZnAl2O4 Nanomaterial as a Naked-Eye Arsenate Sensor: A Combined Experimental and Computational Mechanistic Approach

Raising public awareness over the emerging health risk due to intake of arsenic-contaminated potable water is a matter of great concern. Exploration of cost-effective, self-testing kits is a substantial way to reach out to the masses and detect the presence of arsenate in water. With this agenda, a photoluminescent Mannich base Zn(II) complex (ZnMC = [Zn₂(ML)₂]·(ClO₄)₂·(H₂O); HML = Mannich base ligand) has been synthesized, and its dinuclearity was verified with single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural analysis. Among a range of anions, ZnMC was found to detect arsenate selectively by showing a turn-off emission with a color change from bright green to dark under UV light. The real-life applicability of the ZnMC probe is somewhat restricted to only sensing of arsenate, but not its removal owing to the fact of its homogeneity. Considering the efficacy of ZnMC as well as a need for its easy removal from water, slight modification has been done with chloride ions in the form of ZnMC″ (=[Zn₂(ML)₂(Cl)₂]), and finally, an interface between homogeneous and heterogeneous solid support has been explored with a strategic fabrication of ZnMC″ grafted ZnAl₂O₄, named as ZAZ nanomaterial. This not only imparts successful segregation of arsenate from drinking water but also provides naked-eye detection under ambient light as well as UV light. Thermodynamic parameters associated with the binding of arsenate to ZnMC and ZAZ have been evaluated through isothermal calorimetric (ITC) measurements. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence titration study, absorption titration study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and computational calculations have been performed to get deep insights into the sensing properties. Proper justification of the sensing mechanism is the highlight of this work. ZAZ nanomaterial has been exploited to produce a self-test paper kit for arsenate detection with a limit of 9.86 ppb, which potentially enables applications in environmental monitoring.

Impact of Silver Nanoparticles on Lemon Growth Performance: Insecticidal and Antifungal Activities of Essential Oils From Peels and Leaves

Ten-year-old lemon (Citrus limon L. cv. Eureka) was used during the 2019 and 2020 seasons to investigate the effect of AgNPs at control, 5, 7.5, and 10 mg/L as a foliar application on vegetative growth, yield, and fruit quality. The selected trees were subjected to agricultural practices applied in the field during the study. The results indicated that the foliar application of AgNPs positively improved the shoot length, total chlorophyll, flower, and fruit set percentage, fruit yield, physical and chemical characteristics of fruits, and leaf mineral composition from macro and micronutrients compared to control in both seasons. The foliar application of AgNPs at 10 mg/L showed the highest mean values followed by 7.5 and 5 mg/L, respectively, for the previous characteristics. The treated leaves and fruit peels were hydrodistillated to extract the essential oils (EOs), and GC-MS analysis of leaf EOs. The analysis of leaves EOs showed the presence of neral, geranial, neryl acetate, and limonene as the main abundant bioactive compounds. While in peel the main compounds were neral, geranial, neryl acetate, D-limonene, geraniol acetate, linalool, and citronellal. Toxin effect of both EOs from leaves and peels were evaluated on the rice weevils (Sitophilus oryzae) and the results indicated a higher effect of lemon peel EOs than leaves based on mortality percentage and the values of LC50 and LC95 mg/L. Melia azedarach wood samples loaded with the produced lemon EOs were evaluated for their antifungal activity against the molecularly identified fungus, Fusarium solani (acc # OL410542). The reduction in mycelial growth was increased gradually with the applied treatments. The most potent activity was found in lemon leaf EOs, while peel EOs showed the lowest reduction values. The mycelial growth reduction percentages reached 72.96 and 52.59%, by 0.1% leaf and peel EOs, respectively, compared with control.

Impact of Plant Spacing and Nitrogen Rates on Growth Characteristics and Yield Attributes of Egyptian Cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.)

This current study was performed to determine the influences of plant spacing, Nitrogen (N) fertilization rate and their effect, on growth traits, yield, and yield components of cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) cv. Giza 97 during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. A split plot experiment in three replicates was utilized whereas the cotton seeds were planted at 20, 30, and 40 cm, as main plots and nitrogen at 75, 100, and 125%, was in subplots. The results revealed that the planting spacing at 40 cm significantly (p ≤ 0.01) increased plant height, number of fruiting branches per plant, number of bolls per plant, boll weight (BW), lint percentage (L%), seed cotton yield (SCY), lint cotton yield (LCY), seed index and lint index by 165.68 cm, 20.92, 23.93, 3.75 g, 42.01%, 4.24 ton/ha, 5.16 ton/ha, 12.05, 7.86, respectively, as average in both seasons. The application of N fertilizer rate at 125% caused a maximum increase in growth and yield parameters i.e., plant height (169.08 cm), number of vegetative branches (2.67), number of fruiting branches per plant (20.82), number bolls per fruiting branch (1.39), number of bolls per plant (23.73), boll weight (4.1 g), lint percent (41.9%), seed index (11.8 g), and lint index (8.2), while the plants treated with 100% N rates exhibited highest seed cotton yield (4.3 ton/ha) and lint cotton yield (5.6 ton/ha), as average in both seasons. Combining plant spacing at 40 cm between plants with a 100% N fertilizer rate recorded the highest lint cotton yield (5.67 ton/ha), while the highest seed cotton yield (4.43 and 4.50 ton/ha) was obtained from 125% N fertilizer rate under planting spacing 20 and 40 cm, respectively. Conclusively, a wide density (40 cm) with 125% N is a promising option for improved biomass, cotton growth, yield, physiological traits, and fiber quality.

Carbon Quantum Dots-Based Fluorescent Hydrogel Hybrid Platform for Sensitive Detection of Iron Ions

In this study, we prepared novel fluorescent carbon quantum dots/hydrogel nanocomposite material (CQDsHG) with good adsorption and stable fluorescence detection of Fe3+. The materials were subsequently characterized according to their morphological features, chemical composition, adsorption, and optical properties. The carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method in no more than 15 min, and the as-prepared CQDs exhibited excellent water solubility, as well as emitted strong bright blue fluorescence with an ultrahigh quantum yield of 93.60%. The CQDs were then loaded into a hydrogel (HG) using the sol-gel method to obtain a functional CQDsHG. The CQDsHG exhibited high adsorption amounts (31.94 mg/g) and a good quenching response for Fe3+, thus, it could be used as a sensor to selectively detect Fe3+ in the linear range of 0–150 μM with a detection limit of 0.24 μM. We observed minimal difference in the fluorescence lifetimes between the CQDsHG with and without a quencher (Fe3+), with values of 5.816 ns and 5.824 ns, respectively, confirming that Fe3+ was statically quenched on CQDsHG. The results indicated that the innovative combination of CQDs and HG can improve the synergistic performance of each component for the adsorption and quantitative detection of heavy metal ions in the aqueous environment.
