Abstract
AIM To determine the prevalence of risk factors for type 2 diabetes in overweight and obese adolescents attending hospital-based paediatric care in Western Melbourne. METHODS One hundred overweight and obese adolescents (aged 10-17 years) who attended an outpatient clinic at Sunshine Hospital between May 2019 and May 2020 were randomly selected following a retrospective chart review of 10-17 years old for whom a height and weight had been documented. Additional risk factors for type 2 diabetes were ascertained via structured telephone interview. Data were analysed to determine the overall prevalence of risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and to evaluate for associations between each parameter with body mass index and the number of risk factors. RESULTS Of the 487 adolescents who had height and weight data recorded, 45% were overweight or obese. 77% of those who were interviewed had an additional risk factor for type 2 diabetes. No association between the number of risk factors and body mass index standard deviation score was found. Additionally, there was no association between the number of risk factors for type 2 diabetes and either family history of type 2 diabetes or ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS This paediatric subpopulation had a high rate of risk factors for type 2 diabetes in addition to overweight and obesity, and are at risk of premature mortality and chronic morbidity should they develop type 2 diabetes.

Predictors of diabetes risk in urban and rural areas in Colombia. Heliyon 2022; 8:e08653. Abstract
Background Nutritional habits low in fruits and vegetables and sedentary lifestyle are associated with a higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). However, it is important to assess differences between urban and rural areas. This study aimed to analyze the associations between the risk of developing T2D and setting in the Colombian north coast in 2017. Methods This cross-sectional study included 1,005 subjects. Data was collected by interviewing self-identified members of an urban community and a rural-indigenous population. The interaction terms were evaluated as well as the confounders. Then, adjusted binary logistic regressions were used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI). Results subjects with a high risk of T2D are more likely to belong to the urban setting (OR = 1.908; 95%CI = 1.201–2.01) compared with those with lower T2D after adjusting for age, Body Mass Index (BMI), physical activity, history of high levels of glycemia, and diabetes in relatives. Conclusions Urban communities are more likely to have T2D compared with rural-indigenous populations. These populations have differences from the cultural context, including personal, and lifestyle factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate and determine the precise causal association between body mass index (BMI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using a regression discontinuity design (RDD). METHODS The cross-sectional data of 8550 participants were from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 2015. Influencing factors with statistically significant were selected with logistic regression analysis, and a risk prediction model was established to obtain the risk of individuals suffering from T2DM. RDD was performed with BMI as the grouping variable and the risk of individuals suffering from T2DM as the outcome variable. RESULTS The predictive factors in the T2DM risk prediction model were age, gender, BMI, habitation, education, physical activity level, preference for sugary beverages, walking, self-evaluation health status and history of hypertension. The AUC (area under receiver operating characteristic curve) of the T2DM risk prediction model was 0.849 (95% CI: 0.833, 0.866). BMI was an independent risk factor for T2DM (OR = 1.109, p < 0.001); at BMI = 31 kg/m2 , the risk of T2DM increased sharply by 5.03% (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS There was a positive causal association between BMI and T2DM; when BMI = 31 kg/m2 , the risk of individuals suffering from T2DM was sharply increased.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Incidence of youth-onset diabetes in India has not been well described. Comparison of incidence, across diabetes registries, has the potential to inform hypotheses for risk factors. We sought to compare the incidence of diabetes in the U.S.-based registry of youth onset diabetes (SEARCH) to the Registry of Diabetes with Young Age at Onset (YDR-Chennai and New Delhi regions) in India. METHODS We harmonized data from both SEARCH and YDR to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model. Data were from youth registered with incident diabetes (2006-2012). Denominators were from census and membership data. We calculated diabetes incidence by averaging the total cases across the entire follow-up period and dividing this by the estimated census population corresponding to the source population for case ascertainment. Incidence was calculated for each of the registries and compared by type and within age and sex categories using a 2-sided, skew-corrected inverted score test. RESULTS Incidence of type 1 was higher in SEARCH (21.2 cases/100 000 [95% CI: 19.9, 22.5]) than YDR (4.9 cases/100 000 [95% CI: 4.3, 5.6]). Incidence of type 2 diabetes was also higher in SEARCH (5.9 cases/100 000 [95% CI: 5.3, 6.6] in SEARCH vs 0.5/cases/100 000 [95% CI: 0.3, 0.7] in YDR). The age distribution of incident type 1 diabetes cases was similar across registries, whereas type 2 diabetes incidence was higher at an earlier age in SEARCH. Sex differences existed in SEARCH only, with a higher rate of type 2 diabetes among females. CONCLUSION The incidence of youth-onset type 1 and 2 diabetes was significantly different between registries. Additional data are needed to elucidate whether the differences observed represent diagnostic delay, differences in genetic susceptibility, or differences in distribution of risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The development of obesity and chronic diseases in adulthood often results from a childhood pattern of dietary excesses. This study aimed to identify dietary inadequacies and excesses of multiethnic youth in Edmonton. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of a convenience sample of 473 multiethnic youth between 11 and 18 years was conducted in 12 schools in Edmonton between October 2013 and March 2014. Data were analyzed to determine for each participant mean daily energy and nutrient intakes, dietary adequacy, and nutrient densities. Participants were divided by self-identified ethnicity (Indigenous, European, African and Middle Eastern, and Asian). RESULTS For all nutrients examined, the mean percentage of calories from fat was higher among European (31.7%) and Indigenous youth (31.8%) compared to African and Middle Eastern (28.3%) and Asian youth (29.0%), while Asian youth had the highest percentage of calories from protein (17.7%) compared to other ethnic groups (Indigenous = 15.5%; African & Middle Eastern = 16.5%; European = 16.2%). The majority of youth fell below the recommended values for dietary fiber (83.3-92.0%), vitamins D (84.4-90.2%), and E (89.5-92.0%). More than 50% fell below the dietary reference intakes (DRIs) for vitamin A, vitamin B5, calcium, and magnesium; >30% were below the DRI for folate, zinc, and vitamins B6, and C. The diet of girls contained a greater density of fiber compared to boys (9.3 vs. 8.0 g/1000 kcal; p-value = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Inadequate dietary intake is evident among the majority of multiethnic youth in Edmonton. There is a need to develop strategies to reduce the burden of poor nutrition status for youth.
