Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine the prognostic value of left atrial strain (LAS) using cardiac magnetic resonance for predicting death, heart failure, and ischemic stroke in patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease with preserved left ventricular systolic function and no prior history of ischemic stroke, heart failure, or atrial fibrillation. METHODS AND RESULTS This retrospective cohort analysis included patients referred for stress cardiac magnetic resonance or myocardial viability studies between September 2017 and December 2019. Patients with impaired left ventricular systolic function (<50%) or a history of atrial fibrillation, stroke, or heart failure were excluded. A multivariable Cox model assessed the prognostic value of LAS, with the primary outcomes being the composite outcomes of all-cause death, ischemic stroke, and heart failure. A total of 2030 participants were included in the study. The average LAS was 24.1±8.5%; 928 had LAS <23%, and 1102 had LAS ≥23%. The mean follow-up duration was 39.9±13.6 months. There were 49 deaths (2.4%), 32 ischemic strokes (1.6%), and 34 heart failure events (1.7%). Patients with LAS <23% were at greater risk for composite outcome, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 2.31 (95% CI, 1.50-3.55). CONCLUSIONS LAS by cardiac magnetic resonance has an independent and incremental prognostic value for death, ischemic stroke, and heart failure in patients with preserved left ventricular systolic function. This prognostic value is observed after adjusting for clinical and cardiac magnetic resonance parameters, including left ventricular systolic function, late gadolinium enhancement, and left atrial volume index.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) can assess myocardial motion in non-LV chambers-including assessment of left atrial (LA) and right ventricular (RV) strain. This review seeks to highlight the diagnostic, prognostic, and clinical significance of these parameters in heart failure, atrial fibrillation (AF), diastolic dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension (PH), tricuspid regurgitation, and heart transplant recipients. RECENT FINDINGS Impaired LA strain reflects worse LV diastolic function in individuals with and without HF, and this is associated with decreased exercise capacity. Initiating treatments targeting these functional aspects may enhance exercise capacity and potentially prevent heart failure (HF). Impaired LA strain also identifies patients with a high risk of AF, and this recognition may lead to preventive strategies. Impaired RV strain has significant clinical and prognostic implications across various clinical scenarios, including HF, PH, tricuspid regurgitation, or in heart transplant recipients. STE should not be limited to the assessment of deformation of the LV myocardium. The use of LA and RV strain is supported by a substantial evidence base, and these parameters should be used more widely.

Abstract
Background Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is frequently associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). We compared clinical, echocardiographic, and electrophysiological parameters between HCM subtypes and those without HCM at AF catheter ablation (AFCA) and analyzed post-AFCA reverse remodeling and AF recurrence based on HCM presence and subtype. Methods Among 5161 consecutive patients who underwent de novo AFCA, we included HCM patients and control patients who were age-, gender-, and AF type-matched. Between AF-HCM patients and controls, we compared baseline values for left atrium (LA) wall thickness (LAWT), reverse remodeling at 1-year follow-up, and procedural outcomes over the course of follow-up between two groups. Results A total of 122 AF-HCM patients and 318 control patients were included. AF-HCM patients had more frequent heart failure and higher LA diameter, E/Em, and LA pressure (all, p < .001). However, LAWT did not differ from control group. A year after AFCA, degree of LA reverse remodeling was significantly lower in AF-HCM than in control group (ΔLA dimension, p = .025). Nonapical HCM (HR 1.71; 95% CI 1.05-2.80), persistent AF (HR 1.46; 95% CI 1.05-2.04), and LA dimension (HR 1.04; 95% CI 1.01-1.06) were independent risk factors for AF recurrence. During 78.0 months of follow-up, nonapical HCM patients showed higher AF recurrence rate than both apical HCM (log-rank p = .005) and control patients (log-rank p = .002). Conclusions The presence of HCM, particularly nonapical HCM, displayed increased LA hemodynamic loading with diastolic dysfunction and had poorer rhythm outcomes after AFCA compared to both apical HCM and control group.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess left atrial (LA) function in individuals with known paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) compared with healthy and nonhealthy individuals without atrial fibrillation. METHODS The Akershus Cardiac Examination 1950 Study included 3,706 individuals all born in 1950. LA strain assessment of reservoir (LASr), conduit (LAScd) and contractile (LASct) functions were performed in all participants by investigators blinded to clinical data. Participants with cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, pulmonary or renal disease were defined as nonhealthy, and those without as healthy. Patients with paroxysmal AF were identified through medical history and ECG documentation. RESULTS LA strain assessment was feasible in 3,229 (87%) of the participants (50% women). The healthy group (n = 758) had significantly higher LASr and LAScd than the nonhealthy (n = 2,376), but LASct was similar between the groups. Participants with paroxysmal AF had significantly lower values of all strain parameters than the other groups. Multivariable logistic regression showed a significantly reduced probability of having AF per standard deviation increase in LASr and LASct. A nonlinear restricted cubic spline model fitted better with the association of LASr with paroxysmal AF than the linear model, and LA strain values below the population mean associated with an increased probability of having AF, but for values above the population mean no such association was present. CONCLUSION Compared to participants without AF, those with known paroxysmal AF had significantly lower values of all LA strain parameters during sinus rhythm. Lower values of LA strain were associated with a significantly increased probability of having AF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quantification of left atrial (LA) conduit function and its contribution to left ventricular (LV) filling is challenging because it requires simultaneous measurements of both LA and LV volumes. The functional relationship between LA conduit function and the severity of diastolic dysfunction remains controversial. We studied the role of LA conduit function in maintaining LV filling in advanced diastolic dysfunction. METHODS We performed volumetric and flow analyses of LA function across the spectrum of LV diastolic dysfunction, derived from a set of consecutive patients undergoing multiphasic cardiac computed tomography scanning (n=489). From LA and LV time-volume curves, we calculated 3 volumetric components: (1) early passive emptying volume; (2) late active (booster) volume; and (3) conduit volume. Results were prospectively validated on a group of patients with severe aortic stenosis (n=110). RESULTS The early passive filling progressively decreased with worsening diastolic function (P<0.001). The atrial booster contribution to stroke volume modestly increases with impaired relaxation (P=0.021) and declines with more advanced diastolic function (P<0.001), thus failing to compensate for the reduction in early filling. The conduit volume increased progressively (P<0.001), accounting for 75% of stroke volume (interquartile range, 63-81%) with a restrictive filling pattern, compensating for the reduction in both early and booster functions. Similar results were obtained in patients with severe aortic stenosis. The pulmonary artery systolic pressure increased in a near-linear fashion when the conduit contribution to stroke volume increased above 60%. Maximal conduit flow rate strongly correlated with mitral E-wave velocity (r=0.71; P<0.0001), indicating that the increase in mitral E wave in diastolic dysfunction represents the increased conduit flow. CONCLUSIONS An increase in conduit volume contribution to stroke volume represents a compensatory mechanism to maintain LV filling in advanced diastolic dysfunction. The increase in conduit volume despite increasing LV diastolic pressures is accomplished by an increase in pulmonary venous pressure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is a well-known complication of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), probably due to left atrial (LA) remodelling. LA strain (LAS) can predict NOAF in several cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVE To assess whether LAS predicts NOAF in sinus rhythm patients with STEMI during hospitalization. METHODS Adults with a STEMI and transthoracic echocardiography performed within 48hours of admission were included. LAS analysis, performed by automated software, recorded LAS during the reservoir phase (LASr), the conduit phase (LAScd) and the contraction phase (LASct). RESULTS From May 2021 to November 2022, 175 patients were included, 21 (12%) of whom developed NOAF. NOAF patients were older (median [Q1-Q3]: 67 [59-80] vs 59 [51-67]years; P=0.006) and had a higher Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction scores (4 [2-7] vs 3 [1-4]; P=0.005). All LAS parameters were significantly impaired in NOAF patients, especially LASr (13.0% [10.5-28.4] vs 36.6% [29.0-44.9]; P=0.001). An LASr cut-off of 27% had a sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 80% to identify patients with NOAF. In a multivariable model, LASr was significantly associated with NOAF (odds ratio 1.18, 95% confidence interval 1.09-1.26; P=0.003). The cumulative risk of NOAF during hospital stay was 30% (18-43 with LASr<27% and 4% [1.5-8.5] with LASr≥27% [P<0.0001]). CONCLUSION NOAF is a frequent complication of STEMI. LASr seems helpful for identifying patients at high risk of NOAF during hospitalization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No study has focused on left atrial (LA) function assessed by echocardiography in adult patients with simple D-TGA after arterial switch operation (ASO). We aimed to describe LA strain parameters in these patients. METHODS A prospective cohort study including 42 adult patients with simple D-TGA after ASO and 33 aged-matched controls. Phasic LA and LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) were obtained by transthoracic 2D-speckle tracking echocardiography (STE). Volumetric and functional analysis of LA and LV were also evaluated by 2D and 3D analysis. A multivariable model was performed to investigate the variables that best differentiate patients with D-TGA from healthy controls. RESULTS LA strain parameters in D-TGA patients were within the normal range described for healthy subjects. However, the three LA strain parameters (Reservoir, Conduit, and Contraction) were lower in patients (LASr: 31.13 ± 7.67 vs. 49.71 ± 8.38; LAS cd: -22.91 ± 5.69 vs. -34.55 ± 6.54; LASct: -8.14 ± 4.93 vs. -15.15 ± 6.07, p < .001 for all three comparisons). LA volumes were similar between patients and controls. LV-GLS remained significantly lower in the D-TGA group than in controls (-17.29 ± 2.68 vs. -21.98 ± 1.84, p < .001). D-TGA patients had evidence of worse LV ejection fraction measured by the Teichholz method (63.38 ± 8.23 vs. 69.28 ± 5.92, p = .001) and 3D analysis (57.97% ± 4.16 vs. 60.67 ± 3.39, p = .011) and diastolic dysfunction as compared to healthy controls. LV-GLS and conduit LAS were the variables best differentiating patients with D-TGA from healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS LA strain is impaired in young adults with simple D-TGA late after the ASO, probably in agreement with some degree of LV dysfunction previously described.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Survivors of childhood cancer might be at increased risk of diastolic dysfunction at follow-up due to exposure to cardiotoxic treatment. Although assessment of diastolic function is challenging in this relatively young population, left atrial strain might provide a novel insight in this evaluation. Our aim was to examine diastolic function in a cohort of long-term survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia by using left atrial strain and conventional echocardiographic parameters. METHODS Long-term survivors who were diagnosed at a single center between 1985 and 2015 and a control group of healthy siblings were recruited. Conventional diastolic function parameters and atrial strain were compared, and the latter was measured during the 3 atrial phases: reservoir (PALS), conduit (LACS) and contraction (PACS). Inverse probability of treatment weighting was used to account for differences between the groups. RESULTS We analyzed 90 survivors (age, 24.6±9.7 years, time since diagnosis 18 [11-26] years) and 58 controls. PALS and LACS were significantly reduced compared with the control group: 46.4±11.2 vs 52.1±11.7; P=.003 and 32.5±8.8 vs 38.2±9.3; P=.003, respectively. Conventional diastolic parameters and PACS were similar between the groups. The reductions in PALS and LACS were associated with exposure to cardiotoxic treatment in age- and sex-adjusted analysis (≥ moderate risk, low risk, controls): 45.4±10.5, 49.5±12.9, 52.1±11.7; Padj=.003, and 31.7±9.0, 35.2±7.5, 38.2±9.3; Padj=.001, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Long-term childhood leukemia survivors showed a subtle impairment of diastolic function that was detected with atrial strain but not with conventional measurements. This impairment was more pronounced in those with higher exposure to cardiotoxic treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the correlation between LA and LV strain measurements in different clinical scenarios and evaluate to what extent LA deformation contributes to the prognosis of patients. METHODS A total of 297 consecutive participants including 75 healthy individuals, 75 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients, 74 idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and 73 chronic myocardial infarction (MI) patients were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The associations of LA-LV coupling with clinical status were statistically analyzed by correlation, multiple linear regression, and logistic regression. Survival estimates were calculated by receiver operating characteristic analyses and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS Overall, moderate correlations were found between LA and LV strain in every phase of the cardiac cycle (r: -0.598 to -0.580, all p < 0.001). The slope of the regression line of the individual strain-strain curve had a significant difference among 4 groups (-1.4 ± 0.3 in controls, -1.1 ± 0.6 in HCM, -1.8 ± 0.8 in idiopathic DCM, -2.4 ± 1.1 in chronic MI, all p < 0.05). During a median follow-up of 4.7 years, the total LA emptying fraction was independently associated with primary (hazard ratio: 0.968, 95% CI: 0.951-0.985) and secondary endpoints (hazard ratio: 0.957, 95% CI: 0.930-0.985) with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.720 respectively, 0.806, which was significantly higher than the AUC of LV parameters. CONCLUSIONS The coupled correlations between the left atria and ventricle in every phase and the individual strain-strain curve vary with etiology. LA deformation in late diastole provides prior and incremental information on cardiac dysfunction based on LV metrics. The total LA emptying fraction was an independent indicator for clinical outcome superior to that of LV typical predictors. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT Left ventricular-atrial coupling is not only valuable for comprehending the pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases caused by different etiologies but also holds significant importance for the prevention of adverse cardiovascular events and targeted treatment. KEY POINTS • In HCM patients with preserved LVEF, LA deformation is a sensitive indicator for cardiac dysfunction prior to LV parameters with a reduced LA/LV strain ratio. • In patients with reduced LVEF, LV deformation impairment is more consequential than that of the LA with an increased LA/LV strain ratio. Furthermore, impaired LA active strain indicates potential atrial myopathy. • Among LA and LV parameters, the total LA emptying fraction is the best predictor for guiding clinical management and follow-up in patients with different statuses of LVEF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cryptogenic stroke (CS) remains a significant cause of morbidity. Failure to identify the underlying pathology increases the rate of recurrence. Atrial fibrillation (AF) seems to be responsible for a substantial proportion of CS. Thus, there is an unmet need to identify and properly treat those with silent AF. PURPOSE To investigate the association between left atrial strain and newly diagnosed AF in CS patients. OBJECTIVES We searched major electronic databases for articles assessing the relationship between either peak left atrial longitudinal (PALS) or peak contractile (PACS) strain-quantified using speckle tracking echocardiography-and the incidence of occult AF during the diagnostic work-up of CS patients. RESULTS Eleven studies (two thousand and eighty-one patients) were analyzed. Incidence of occult AF was 19%. Both PALS and PACS were significantly lower in patients with newly diagnosed AF (MD - 8.6%, 95%CI - 10.7 to - 6.4, I2 86.4% and MD - 5.5, 95%CI - 6.8 to - 4.2, I2 80.8%). According to the diagnostic accuracy meta-analysis, PALS < 20% present 71% (95%CI 47-87%) sensitivity and 71% (95%CI 60-81%) specificity for the diagnosis of occult AF, assuming a prevalence of 20%. The corresponding values for PACS < 11% are 83% (95%CI 57-94%) and 78% (95%CI 56-91%). CONCLUSION Both PALS and PACS are significantly lower in patients with CS and silent AF. It seems that the cut-off values mentioned above could help physicians in identifying patients who may benefit more from prolonged rhythm monitoring. More studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence suggests that atrial myopathy may be the underlying pathophysiology that explains adverse cardiovascular outcomes in heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation. Lower left atrial (LA) function (strain) is a key biomarker of atrial myopathy, but murine LA strain has not been described, thus limiting translational investigation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize LA function by speckle-tracking echocardiography in mouse models of atrial myopathy. METHODS We used 3 models of atrial myopathy in wild-type male and female C57Bl6/J mice: (1) aged 16 to 17 months, (2) Ang II (angiotensin II) infusion, and (3) high-fat diet+Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (HF with preserved ejection fraction, HFpEF). LA reservoir, conduit, and contractile strain were measured using speckle-tracking echocardiography from a modified parasternal long-axis window. Left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, and global longitudinal strain were also measured. Transesophageal rapid atrial pacing was used to induce atrial fibrillation. RESULTS LA reservoir, conduit, and contractile strain were significantly reduced in aged, Ang II and HFpEF mice compared with young controls. There were no sex-based interactions. Left ventricular diastolic function and global longitudinal strain were lower in aged, Ang II and HFpEF, but left ventricular ejection fraction was unchanged. Atrial fibrillation inducibility was low in young mice (5%), moderately higher in aged mice (20%), and high in Ang II (75%) and HFpEF (83%) mice. CONCLUSIONS Using speckle-tracking echocardiography, we observed reduced LA function in established mouse models of atrial myopathy with concurrent atrial fibrillation inducibility, thus providing the field with a timely and clinically relevant platform for understanding the pathophysiology and discovery of novel treatment targets for atrial myopathy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left atrial (LA) myopathy with paroxysmal and permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) is frequent in chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) but sometimes occult at rest and elicited by stress. AIM This study sought to assess LA volume and function at rest and during stress across the spectrum of AF. METHODS In a prospective, multicenter, observational study design, we enrolled 3042 patients [age = 64 ± 12; 63.8% male] with known or suspected CCS: 2749 were in sinus rhythm (SR, Group 1); 191 in SR with a history of paroxysmal AF (Group 2); and 102 were in permanent AF (Group 3). All patients underwent stress echocardiography (SE). We measured left atrial volume index (LAVI) in all patients and LA Strain reservoir phase (LASr) in a subset of 486 patients. RESULTS LAVI increased from Group 1 to 3, both at rest (Group 1 = 27.6 ± 12.2, Group 2 = 31.6 ± 12.9, Group 3 = 43.3 ± 19.7 mL/m2, p < 0.001) and at peak stress (Group 1 = 26.2 ± 12.0, Group 2 = 31.2 ± 12.2, Group 3 = 43.9 ± 19.4 mL/m2, p < 0.001). LASr progressively decreased from Group 1 to 3, both at rest (Group 1 = 26.0 ± 8.5%, Group 2 = 23.2 ± 11.2%, Group 3 = 8.5 ± 6.5%, p < 0.001) and at peak stress (Group 1 = 26.9 ± 10.1, Group 2 = 23.8 ± 11.0 Group 3 = 10.7 ± 8.1%, p < 0.001). Stress B-lines (≥2) were more frequent in AF (Group 1 = 29.7% vs. Group 2 = 35.5% vs. Group 3 = 57.4%, p < 0.001). Inducible ischemia was less frequent in SR (Group 1 = 16.1% vs. Group 2 = 24.7% vs. Group 3 = 24.5%, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS In CCS, rest and stress LA dilation and reservoir dysfunction are often present in paroxysmal and, more so, in permanent AF and are associated with more frequent inducible ischemia and pulmonary congestion during stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the assessment of left atrial (LA) mechanics has been reported to refine atrial fibrillation (AF) risk prediction, it doesn't completely predict AF recurrence. The potential added role of right atrial (RA) function in this setting is unknown. Accordingly, this study sought to evaluate the added value of RA longitudinal reservoir strain (RASr) for the prediction of AF recurrence after electrical cardioversion (ECV). METHODS We retrospectively studied 132 consecutive patients with persistent AF who underwent elective ECV. Complete two-dimensional and speckle-tracking echocardiography analyses of LA and RA size and function were obtained in all patients before ECV. The end point was AF recurrence. RESULTS During a 12-month follow-up, 63 patients (48%) showed AF recurrence. Both LASr and RASr were significantly lower in patients experiencing AF recurrence than in patients with persistent sinus rhythm (LASr, 10% ± 6% vs 13% ± 7%; RASr, 14% ± 10% vs 20% ± 9%, respectively; P < .001 for both). Right atrial longitudinal reservoir strain (area under the curve = 0.77; 95% CI, 0.69-0.84; P < .0001) was more strongly associated with the recurrence of AF after ECV than LASr (area under the curve = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.60-0.77; P < .0001). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that patients with both LASr ≤ 10% and RASr ≤ 15% had a significantly increased risk for AF recurrence (log-rank, P < .001). However, at multivariable Cox regression, RASr (hazard ratio, 3.26; 95% CI, 1.73-6.13; P < .001) was the only parameter independently associated with AF recurrence. Right atrial longitudinal reservoir strain was more strongly associated with the occurrence of AF relapse after ECV than LASr, and LA and RA volumes. CONCLUSION Right atrial longitudinal reservoir strain was independently and more strongly associated than LASr with AF recurrence after elective ECV. This study highlights the importance of assessing the functional remodeling of both the RA and LA in patients with persistent AF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with higher risks of ischemic stroke (IS) and dementia. Whether alterations in left atrial (LA) function or size-atrial myopathy-confound these associations remains unknown. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to examine the association of prevalent and incident AF with ischemic stroke and dementia in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities) study, adjusting for LA function and size. METHODS Participants at visit 5 (2011-2013) with echocardiographic LA function (reservoir, conduit, contractile strain, and emptying fraction) and size (maximal, minimal volume index) data, and without prevalent stroke or dementia were followed through 2019. For analysis, we used time-varying Cox regression. RESULTS Among 5,458 participants (1,193 with AF, mean age of 76 years) in the stroke analysis and 5,461 participants (1,205 with AF, mean age of 75 years) in the dementia analysis, 209 participants developed ischemic stroke, and 773 developed dementia over 7.1 years (median). In a demographic and risk factor-adjusted model, AF was significantly associated with ischemic stroke (HR, 1.63; 95% CI: 1.11-2.37) and dementia (HR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.13-1.70). After additionally adjusting for LA reservoir strain, these associations were attenuated and no longer statistically significant (stroke [HR: 1.33, 95% CI: 0.88-2.00], dementia [HR: 1.15, 95% CI: 0.92-1.43]). Associations with ischemic stroke and dementia were also attenuated and not statistically significant after adjustment for LA contractile strain, emptying fraction, and minimal volume index. CONCLUSIONS AF-ischemic stroke and AF-dementia associations were not statistically significant after adjusting for measures of atrial myopathy. This proof-of-concept analysis does not support AF as an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke and dementia.

Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with subclinical cardiomyopathy, diastolic dysfunction, and increased risk of cardiovascular death. However, the relationship between left atrial (LA) mechanics and left ventricular (LV) diastolic function has not been evaluated in people living with HIV (PLWH) relative to HIV-uninfected (HIV-) controls. This is a multicenter, cross-sectional cohort analysis using the HIV Cardiovascular Disease substudy of the Veterans Aging Cohort Study database, which aimed to examine a cohort of PLWH and HIV- veterans without known cardiovascular disease. A total of 277 subjects (180 PLWH, 97 HIV-) with echocardiograms were identified. LV and LA phasic strain were derived and diastolic function was evaluated. Relationship between LA strain, LV strain, and the degree of diastolic dysfunction were assessed using analysis of variance and ordinal logistic regression with propensity weighting. In the PLWH cohort, 91.7% were on antiretroviral therapy and 86.1% had HIV viral loads <500 copies/ml. The mean (± SD) duration of infection was 9.7 ± 4.9 years. Relative to HIV- veterans, PLWH did not differ in LA mechanics and proportion of diastolic dysfunction (p = 0.31). Using logistic regression with propensity weighting, we found no association between HIV status and degree of diastolic dysfunction. In both cohorts, LA reservoir strain and LA conduit strain were inversely and independently associated with the degree of diastolic dysfunction. Compared with HIV- veterans, PLWH who are primarily virally suppressed and antiretroviral-treated did not differ in LA strain or LV diastolic dysfunction. If confirmed in other cohorts, HIV viral suppression may curtail adverse alterations in cardiac structure and function.
