Abstract
Lymphoid and haematopoietic neoplasms are rare in cetaceans. This report describes intravascular lymphoma in an adult common dolphin that presented with neurological signs prior to stranding. Intravascular lymphoma is a rare neoplasm previously recorded in humans, dogs, a cat and a horse. The condition is characterized by intravascular neoplastic lymphocytic proliferation, the sequelae of which are dependent on the organ affected. Key pathological findings in this case included multifocal cerebrocortical malacia secondary to vascular occlusion associated with intravascular neoplastic lymphocytic proliferation. Immunohistochemistry supported a T-cell phenotype similar to that observed in dogs. The neurological presentation was consistent with that seen in other species in which the central nervous system is involved. The aetiology and pathogenesis have not been established in other species and although no further investigations were made in this common dolphin, this report adds to the short list of species affected by this rare neoplasm.

Abstract
Inuit in Alaska, Canada, and Russia have a long-term tradition in hunting bowhead whales that reaches back several thousands of years. Central to Inuit culture, hunted bowhead whales have undergone rigorous health evaluation by hunters and communities through various iterative processes guided by traditional customary practices. These traditional customary practices are similar to western meat hygiene designed to provide a thorough health assessment of the catch and by default, a public health judgment on food safety. With the establishment of the bowhead whale harvest monitoring program in Utqiaġvik in 1972, led by the North Slope Borough leadership and Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission (AEWC), collaborative research on the health of bowhead whales between the AEWC, Village Whaling Captains Association, Whaling Captain’s Wives Association, research scientists, and veterinarians have continued to build on the in-depth Inuit knowledge of the bowhead whale. This chapter synthesizes the historic and current knowledge about health and disease conditions of the bowhead whale. The information provided is a coproduction of knowledge reflecting perspectives of Inuit indigenous and local knowledge, veterinary medicine, and biology.

Abstract
This study describes the pathologic findings and most probable causes of death (CD) of 224 cetaceans stranded along the coastline of the Canary Islands (Spain) over a 7-year period, 2006-2012. Most probable CD, grouped as pathologic categories (PCs), was identified in 208/224 (92.8%) examined animals. Within natural PCs, those associated with good nutritional status represented 70/208 (33.6%), whereas, those associated with significant loss of nutritional status represented 49/208 (23.5%). Fatal intra- and interspecific traumatic interactions were 37/208 (17.8%). Vessel collisions included 24/208 (11.5%). Neonatal/perinatal pathology involved 13/208 (6.2%). Fatal interaction with fishing activities comprised 10/208 (4.8%). Within anthropogenic PCs, foreign body-associated pathology represented 5/208 (2.4%). A CD could not be determined in 16/208 (7.7%) cases. Natural PCs were dominated by infectious and parasitic disease processes. Herein, our results suggest that between 2006 and 2012, in the Canary Islands, direct human activity appeared responsible for 19% of cetaceans deaths, while natural pathologies accounted for 81%. These results, integrating novel findings and published reports, aid in delineating baseline knowledge on cetacean pathology and may be of value to rehabilitators, caregivers, diagnosticians and future conservation policies.

Abstract
Cancer is a disease of multicellularity; it originates when cells become dysregulated due to mutations and grow out of control, invading other tissues and provoking discomfort, disability, and eventually death. Human life expectancy has greatly increased in the last two centuries, and consequently so has the incidence of cancer. However, how cancer patterns in humans compare to those of other species remains largely unknown. In this review, we search for clues about cancer and its evolutionary underpinnings across the tree of life. We discuss data from a wide range of species, drawing comparisons with humans when adequate, and interpret our findings from an evolutionary perspective. We conclude that certain cancers are uniquely common in humans, such as lung, prostate, and testicular cancer; while others are common across many species. Lymphomas appear in almost every animal analysed, including in young animals, which may be related to pathogens imposing selection on the immune system. Cancers unique to humans may be due to our modern environment or may be evolutionary accidents: random events in the evolution of our species. Finally, we find that cancer‐resistant animals such as whales and mole‐rats have evolved cellular mechanisms that help them avoid neoplasia, and we argue that there are multiple natural routes to cancer resistance.

Abstract
We describe gross, histopathologic, and immunonocytologic features of a primary uterine T-cell lymphoma with multiple metastases in an adult female Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis). Neoplastic T-cell lymphocytes (CD3+) partially effaced the uterus, ovaries, mesosalpinx, and urinary bladder and variably infiltrated abdominal and thoracic organs. Herpesvirus and morbillivirus PCR were negative.

Abstract
This report describes the gross, microscopical and immunohistochemical features of a high-grade astrocytoma (glioblastoma multiforme) in an adult male Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis). On necropsy examination, a 5 × 2.5 × 2 cm, poorly demarcated, red, friable and locally expansile mass effaced the thalamus and the left periventricular region and extended to the left lateral ventricle of the brain. Microscopically, the mass consisted of haphazardly arranged bundles and rows of interweaving polygonal to spindle-shaped cells. These often palisaded along serpentine foci of necrosis and were surrounded by prominent vessels. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells expressed glial fibrillary acidic protein, but not vimentin, S100 protein, neuron-specific enolase or neurofilament protein. A diagnosis of high-grade astrocytoma was made and this represents the first description of a glioma in a cetacean species.
