Abstract
To compare the effects of blue-light-filtering intraocular lenses (BF-IOLs) and conventional ultraviolet-blocking intraocular lenses (UVB-IOLs) on contrast sensitivity in patients with concurrent cataracts and glaucoma. This prospective randomized comparative interventional study enrolled glaucomatous patients with concurrent cataracts scheduled for cataract surgery with IOL implantation at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, between October 2016 and March 2018. The patients were randomly assigned to receive BF-IOLs or UVB-IOLs. A functional vision analyzer measured contrast sensitivity at spatial frequencies of 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0, and 18.0 cycles per degree (CPD). The contrast sensitivity values of the 2 patient groups were compared at 2 months postoperatively. The study enrolled 42 eyes (21 with primary angle-closure glaucoma and 21 with primary open-angle glaucoma) of 32 patients. Twenty eyes received BF-IOLs, and 22 received UVB-IOLs. Postoperative logarithmic contrast sensitivity (log contrast sensitivity) significantly improved at each spatial frequency in both groups, except for 1.5 CPD. The median postoperative log contrast sensitivity values for the spatial frequencies of 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0, and 18.0 CPD for the BF-IOL group were 1.6, 1.9, 1.8, 1.4, and 0.6, respectively, compared to 1.4, 1.8, 1.7, 1.2, and 0.8 for the UVB-IOL group. However, the 2 groups had no significant differences in log contrast sensitivity values at each spatial frequency (P = .20, .37, .30, .28, and .68, respectively). Cataract surgery with IOL implantation improved contrast sensitivity in glaucomatous patients. The BF-IOLs and UVB-IOLs showed no statistically significant difference in the postoperative contrast sensitivity achieved at each spatial frequency.

Abstract
PURPOSE To record experimental data on the spectral transmittance characteristics of transparent hydrophobic acrylic foldable IOLs, which were in vivo for a prolonged period of time and explanted under clinical indications and also to compare the data with that of corresponding control and crystalline lens along with review of the relevant literature. METHOD Material and make of each of the explanted intraocular lenses (IOLs) as well as pre-explantation clinical status of the eyes were confirmed from the medical record. The transmittance of wavelength from 185 to 900 nm of each of the selected IOLs was measured using Shimadzu UV 2600 UV visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer in double-beam configuration and probe version 2.16 software. The data obtained were statistically analyzed. RESULTS The mean transmittance of 12 clinically explanted IOLs at spectral range 300-700 nm was 49.5% ± SD 6.9%. This value was 10% and 38% less than the corresponding clear (59% ± SD 0.4%) and yellow (87.5% ± SD 0.4%) control, respectively. The mean transmittance of the analytes in the UV range was 43.3 ± SD 6.9%, and it was almost similar to the control. The data showed wide variations without good correlation, and it matches with the human crystalline lens at the age range of 50-60 years. All eyes were otherwise healthy, and none had age-related macular degeneration. CONCLUSION In comparison with fresh IOL with a yellow filter, light transmittance at the spectral range 300-700 nm was found decreased in all the IOLs, which were in vivo for an average period of 12.25 ± 4.4 years. All IOLs transmitted variable amounts of UV radiation. More data are required for further analysis on the subject.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the luminous behavior applied to materials used in intraocular surgeries. METHODS Discs of the different products were delivered in 19.00 mm × 3.00 mm. Each sample was fixed on support keeping it perpendicular to the spectrophotometer beam. Later, their analyses were carried out in the air/PMMA ratio. The graphs of individual profiles of the measurements along the length were constructed according to each of the filters from the spectrophotometric analysis. In addition, descriptive statistics of transmittance and absorbance for each wavelength presented were correlated for each filter. RESULTS It is possible to observe that the minimum absorption measure was found in the Red Filter, especially in the blue and green light spectrum. CONCLUSION Using filters in PMMA materials appears to improve visual quality in corneal implants, especially the red filter, due to greater absorbance of light leading to fewer light scattering phenomena through corneal rings. However, further studies comparing the effects of different filters on Intracorneal rings should be carried out to elucidate this field of study.

Abstract
Elucidating the mechanism and estimating the extent of conformation change of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) upon ultraviolet (UV) exposure are of vital importance for understanding the DNA photodamage process. The existing research was mainly focused on the lesions of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and involved off-site measurement of the photodamage level. In this work, short-wavelength UV (UVC) (254 nm) irradiation was demonstrated to induce the dehybridization of dsDNA due to the loss of paring capacity of photodamaged pyrimidine nucleobases. The intrinsic programmability of dsDNA enabled researchers to rationally design the on-demand dehybridization sites. The spatial conformation switch of dsDNA caused by UVC irradiation could be evolved into a label-free sensing platform for the on-site measurement of the DNA photodamage level.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the incidence of clinically diagnosed insomnia after cataract surgery in pseudophakic eyes with blue light-filtering intraocular lenses (BF-IOLs) and non-BF-IOLs. DESIGN Nationwide cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. METHODS We enrolled 171,415 patients who underwent cataract surgery in both eyes between 2008 and 2013 and followed them till 2018. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the baseline characteristics between the 2 IOL groups. The Cox model and cause-specific hazard model were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and subdistribution hazard ratio (SHR). RESULTS Overall, 19,604 (11.4%) and 151,811 (88.6%) patients had BF-IOL and non-BF-IOL implants, respectively. The BF-IOL group tended to be younger and had fewer chronic diseases. Within a mean follow-up period of 6.2 years, the incidence rates of insomnia (per 100 person-years) in the BF-IOL and non-BF-IOL groups were 2.97 and 3.21, respectively. There was no significant difference in the incidence rate of insomnia between the 2 IOL groups after treating all-cause mortality as a competing risk (SHR 0.98, 95% CI 0.95-1.01) and after PSM (HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.92-1.01), respectively. Subgroup analysis revealed no significant difference in the insomnia rate between the 2 IOL groups for various age groups, 2 sex groups, and men with and without benign prostatic hyperplasia. CONCLUSION In Taiwan, the use of a BF-IOL for up to 10 years had no apparent disadvantage over non-BF-IOLs with respect to insomnia.

Abstract
Study Objectives
Age-related cataract decreases light transmission at the most sensitive spectrum for circadian photoentrainment, with negative ramifications for human health. Here, we assessed whether intraocular lens replacement (IOL) in older patients with previous cataract was associated with increased stability and amplitude of circadian rest–activity rhythms, and improved sleep quality.
Methods
Our cross-sectional study included sixteen healthy older individuals without ocular diseases (controls; 55–80 years; 63.6 ± 5.6y; 8 women) and 13 patients with previous cataract and bilateral IOL (eight with blue-blocking [BB] lens and five with ultraviolet-only [UV] blocking lens; 55–80 years; 69.9 ± 5.2y; 9 women). The study comprised three weeks of at home rest–activity assessments using wrist-worn actigraphs, and each week preceded a laboratory protocol. Primary outcomes were actigraphy-derived interdaily stability, intradaily variability, and relative amplitude of circadian rest–activity rhythms. Secondary outcomes were actigraphy-assessed sleep quality (i.e. time in bed, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, mean wake bout time and fragmentation index).
Results
Patients with IOL had significantly higher interdaily stability (“Group” effect: pFDR =.001), but not intradaily variability (“Group” effect: pFDR = n.s.), and significantly higher relative amplitude of rest–activity rhythms (“Group” effect: pFDR < .001). Moreover, patients with IOL had significantly higher activity levels during the day and lower levels during the evening, as compared to healthy older controls (“Group” effect: pFDR = .03). Analyses of actigraphy-derived sleep parameters yielded no significant differences across groups (“Group” effect: all pFDR > .1).
Conclusions
Our cross-sectional study suggests that enhancing spectral lens transmission in patients with cataract may benefit their circadian health.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the incidence rate of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) after cataract surgery and compare the relative incidence of AMD in pseudophakes with blue light-filtering intraocular lenses (BF-IOLs) and non-BF-IOLs. DESIGN A nationwide cohort study conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. METHODS We enrolled 186,591 patients who underwent cataract surgery in both eyes between 2008 and 2013 and monitored them from the index date (the date of first cataract surgery) until AMD, death, loss to follow-up, or December 31, 2017, whichever occurred first. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the baseline characteristics between the BF-IOL and non-BF-IOL groups. RESULTS BF-IOLs were implanted in 21,126 patients (11.3%) and non-BF-IOLs were implanted in 165,465 patients (88.7%). Patients in the BF-IOL group tended to be younger, with fewer men, different cataract surgery years, higher income, more nonmanual workers, more patients from urban and suburban areas, and fewer chronic diseases compared with the non-BF-IOL group. With a mean follow-up period of 6.1 years (range, 1-10 years) after cataract surgery, 12,533 and 1655 patients developed non-exudative AMD and exudative AMD, respectively. The incidence rate of non-exudative AMD and exudative AMD (per 1000 person-years) was 9.95 and 1.22 for the BF-IOL group and 11.13 and 1.44 for the non-BF-IOL group, respectively. After PSM, no statistical difference in the incidence rate of nonexudative AMD (hazards ratio, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.88-1.03) and exudative AMD (hazard ratio, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.77-1.18) was observed between the BF-IOL and non-BF-IOL groups. CONCLUSIONS In Taiwan, the incidence rate of AMD after cataract surgery was 11.59 per 1000 person-years. The use of a BF-IOL for up to 10 years had no apparent advantage over a non-BF-IOL in the incidence of AMD.

Abstract
Purpose More than a dozen studies have investigated whether blue-light filtering (BLF) intraocular lens (IOL) implants influence color vision, generally finding they do not. These studies have not tested color vision per se; rather, they have measured color vision deficiencies or chromatic discrimination. Here, we used additive trichromatic colorimetry to assess color appearance in participants with BLF and clear IOL. Methods Seventy-six participants were recruited from two populations: older participants (n = 52) with BLF and clear IOL (n = 98 eyes; M = 67.33 ± 7.48 years; 58.8% female; 25.5% non-White), and young adult control participants (n = 24; M = 21.0 ± 5.13 years; 70.8% female; 41.5% non-White). Participants used a custom-built tricolorimeter to mix three primaries until a perceived perfect neutral white was achieved. Color appearance, expressed as chromaticity coordinates, was measured with a spectral radiometer (ILS950). Results Between subjects, the BLF IOL chromaticity coordinates (x = 0.34, y = 0.35, u′ = 0.21, v′ = 0.48) were not significantly different from the clear IOL (x = 0.34, y = 0.33, u′ = 0.22, v′ = 0.48). BLF and clear IOL were also not different within-contralateral subjects (n = 21; BLF x = 0.34, y = 0.33, u′ = 0.22, v′ = 0.47; clear x = 0.34, y = 0.33, u′ = 0.21, v′ = 0.48). Both IOL groups differed from young adults (v′[0.45; P = 0.001], x[0.31; P = 0.008], and y[ 0.30, P < 0.000], but not u′[0.21]). Conclusions One advantage of geometric representation of color space is the ability to specify the appearance (rather than spectral composition) of any light mixture by specific coordinates. Using this system, only minor differences in color appearance were found between a BLF, clear IOL, and young natural lens. Translational Relevance When color perception is directly measured, the BLF and clear IOL are not meaningfully different.

Abstract
Purpose To determine whether the use of a blue light-filtering intraocular lens (IOL) prevents the onset of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). More precisely, we examined the proportion of blue light-filtering IOL in a wet AMD patients’ sample and compared it with a general North American pseudophakic population sample. Design Retrospective case–control study. Methods Case patients were diagnosed and treated for wet AMD and had prior IOL implantation at least 3 years before the diagnosis of wet AMD. Control patients were randomly selected among patients who had cataract surgery at our institution. They were exempt of AMD and paired for the year of surgery, sex and age at cataract surgery. A total of 196 patients were included in each study group. Results Among patients with wet AMD, 62.8% had a blue light-filtering IOL compared with 63.3% among control patients (p = 0.92). Mean time between implantation and injection of anti-VEGF in AMD patients was 6.62 years (95% confidence interval (CI): 6.04–7.19) in non-blue light-filtering IOL group and 5.76 years (95% CI: 5.41–6.11) in blue light-filtering IOL group (p = 0.0120). Conclusion No correlations could be established between the presence of a blue light filter in the IOL and the occurrence of wet AMD. AMD patients without blue light-filtering IOL were injected significantly later than patients with an IOL filtering blue light, which contradict the potential clinical benefit of the blue light filter.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Tinted lenses may adversely affect colour discrimination. Before recommending tinted lenses to patients, practitioners should bear in mind any effects on colour discrimination. The effects of 'blue-blocking' spectacle lenses with high luminous transmittance on colour vision is not a concern. BACKGROUND Blue-blocking lenses have been widely promoted by manufacturers and practitioners. The more blue-blocking lenses are known to affect colour vision significantly but there has been no study of the effects of 'blue-blocking' spectacle lenses. METHODS The transmittances of commercially available lenses were measured and the three lenses with the lowest blue light transmittance were selected. Subjects undertook the following computer-based colour vision tests: Colour Assessment and Diagnosis; the Cambridge Colour Test; and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test. RESULTS Blue and luminous transmittances of lenses were documented. The reduction in blue transmittance varied from 12 to 40 per cent (two to 30 per cent compared with an untinted lens). The lenses were found to have no significant, statistical or possibly practical, effect on the results of the three colour vision tests (t-test, analysis of variance, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis). CONCLUSION The modest blue light transmittance reduction of the 'blue-blocking' spectacle lenses examined was not sufficient to have a statistically significant effect on colour vision.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms regulate adaptive alterations in mammalian physiology and are maximally entrained by the short wavelength blue spectrum; cataracts block the transmission of light, particularly blue light. Cataract surgery is performed with two types of intraocular lenses (IOL): (1) conventional IOL that transmit the entire visible spectrum and (2) blue-light-filtering (BF) IOL that block the short wavelength blue spectrum. We hypothesized that the transmission properties of IOL are associated with long-term survival. This retrospective cohort study of a 15-hospital healthcare system identified 9,108 participants who underwent bilateral cataract surgery; 3,087 were implanted with conventional IOL and 6,021 received BF-IOL. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models that included several a priori determined subgroup and sensitivity analyses yielded estimates supporting that conventional IOL compared with BF-IOL may be associated with significantly reduced risk of long-term death. Confirming these differences and identifying any potential causal mechanisms await the conduct of appropriately controlled prospective translational trials. Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the effect of asphericity and blue light filter (BLF) of three different intraocular lenses (IOLs) on the visual performance, second- and third-order aberrations (defocus, coma, trefoil), and contrast sensitivity after uneventful cataract surgery. Methods One hundred and twenty eyes of 60 patients with clinically significant cataract were randomly assigned to receive one of the three IOL types: Bioline Yellow Accurate (aspheric, with BLF, i-medical, Germany), BioAcryl 60125 (spherical, without BLF, Biotech, France), and H65C/N (aspheric, without BLF, PhysIOL, Belgium). Each IOL was implanted in 40 eyes. Complete ophthalmologic examination, functional acuity contrast testing and wavefront analysis were performed 60 days postoperatively. Results The mean postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.95 ± 0.08, not differing statistically among the IOL groups (P = 0.83). Mean defocus and coma values did not yield any statistically significant difference through the IOL groups varying from –0.784 to –0.614 μm and 0.129 to 0.198 μm (P = 0.79 and 0.34, respectively). Bioline Yellow Accurate IOL presented less trefoil aberrations, 0.108 ± 0.05 μm, compared to the other two IOL types (BioAcryl [0.206 ± 0.19 μm] and Physiol [0.193 ± 0.17 μm], P< 0.05). Contrast sensitivity values did not differ among the groups under all lighting conditions. Bioline Yellow IOL showed a statistically higher loss of contrast sensitivity (between mesopic and mesopic with glare conditions) compared to the BioAcryl and PhysIOL in 12 and 3 cpd spatial frequencies, respectively (P< 0.05). Conclusion Bioline Yellow IOL indicated lower contrast sensitivity under mesopic conditions when glare was applied but resulted in less trefoil aberrations after uneventful cataract surgery. No further differences were noted in postoperative visual performance among three IOL groups.

Abstract
Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells are an essential part of the human eye because they not only mediate and control the transfer of fluids and solutes but also protect the retina against photooxidative damage and renew photoreceptor cells through phagocytosis. However, their function necessitates cumulative exposure to the sun resulting in UV damage, which may lead to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Several studies have shown that UVB induces direct DNA damage and oxidative stress in RPE cells by increasing ROS and dysregulating endogenous antioxidants. Activation of different signaling pathways connected to inflammation, cell cycle arrest, and intrinsic apoptosis was reported as well. Besides that, essential functions like phagocytosis, osmoregulation, and water permeability of RPE cells were also affected. Although the melanin within RPE cells can act as a photoprotectant, this photoprotection decreases with age. Nevertheless, the changes in lens epithelium-derived growth factor (LEDGF) and autophagic activity or application of bioactive compounds from natural products can reverse the detrimental effect of UVB. Additionally, in vivo studies on the whole retina demonstrated that UVB irradiation induces gene and protein level dysregulation, indicating cellular stress and aberrations in the chromosome level. Morphological changes like retinal depigmentation and drusen formation were noted as well which is similar to the etiology of AMD, suggesting the connection of UVB damage with AMD. Therefore, future studies, which include mechanism studies via in vitro or in vivo and other potential bioactive compounds, should be pursued for a better understanding of the involvement of UVB in AMD.

Abstract
Polyurethanes are of undoubted interest for the scientific community and the industry. Their outstanding versatility from tailor-made structures turns them into major polymers for use in a wide range of different applications. As with other polymers, new, emerging molecules and monomers with specific attributes can provide new functions and capabilities to polyurethanes. Natural and synthetic coumarin and its derivatives are characterised by interesting biological, photophysical and photochemical properties. Then, the polyurethanes can exploit those features of many coumarins which are present in their composition to achieve new functions and performances. This article reviews the developments in the proper use of the special properties of coumarins in polyurethanes to produce functional and smart materials that can be suitable for new specific applications.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE We have analyzed the ultraviolet transmittance of some commercial intraocular lenses (IOLs). The results show differences of wavelength cutoff among them. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the ultraviolet light transmittance of different IOLs made out of acrylic hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and hydrophilic with hydrophobic surface materials from different manufacturers. METHODS The spectral transmission curves of eight monofocal IOLs with the same dioptric power of +20.0 diopters were measured using a PerkinElmer Lambda 35 ultraviolet/visible spectrometer. Two IOLs of each type were tested three times. The ultraviolet cutoff wavelength at 10% transmission and the mean values were calculated. RESULTS All lenses prevented transmission of ultraviolet C (200 to 280 nm) and B radiation (280 to 315 nm). However, not all IOLs provided the same filtering properties in ultraviolet A (315 to 380 nm). Within the ultraviolet A range, the ultraviolet radiation cutoff wavelength of 10% ranges from approximately 360 to 400 nm. HOYA iSert 250 provided a cutoff wavelength of 398.4 nm; AcrySof SA60AT, 396.2 nm; AcrySof SA60WF, 395.7 nm; CT Asphina 404, 378.34 nm; Tecnis ZCB00, 377.70 nm; CT Lucia 607P, 379 nm; C-Flex 570C, 377 nm; and enVista MX60, 360 nm. CONCLUSIONS Intraocular lenses of different materials and manufacturers have different ultraviolet transmission characteristics. AcrySof (SA60AT and SA60WF) and HOYA iSert 250 provided the highest ultraviolet radiation transmission; the cutoff wavelength of 10% is close to 400 nm. In contrast, enVista IOL showed the lowest ultraviolet radiation cutoff.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual loss in older people. Advanced AMD takes two forms, neovascular (wet) and atrophic (dry). Stargardt disease (STGD) is the commonest form of inherited macular dystrophy. OBJECTIVE To carry out a systematic review of treatments for dry AMD and STGD, and to identify emerging treatments where future NIHR research might be commissioned. DESIGN Systematic review. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and The Cochrane Library from 2005 to 13 July 2017 for reviews, journal articles and meeting abstracts. We looked for studies of interventions that aim to preserve or restore vision in people with dry AMD or STGD. The most important outcomes are those that matter to patients: visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity, reading speed, ability to drive, adverse effects of treatment, quality of life, progression of disease and patient preference. However, visual loss is a late event and intermediate predictors of future decline were accepted if there was good evidence that they are strong predictors of subsequent visual outcomes. These include changes detectable by investigation, but not necessarily noticed by people with AMD or STGD. ClinicalTrials.gov, the World Health Organization search portal and the UK Clinical Trials gateway were searched for ongoing and recently completed clinical trials. RESULTS The titles and abstracts of 7948 articles were screened for inclusion. The full text of 398 articles were obtained for further screening and checking of references and 112 articles were included in the final report. Overall, there were disappointingly few good-quality studies (including of sufficient size and duration) reporting useful outcomes, particularly in STGD. However we did identify a number of promising research topics, including drug treatments, stem cells, new forms of laser treatment, and implantable intraocular lens telescopes. In many cases, research is already under way, funded by industry or governments. LIMITATIONS In AMD, the main limitation came from the poor quality of much of the evidence. Many studies used VA as their main outcome despite not having sufficient duration to observe changes. The evidence on treatments for STGD is sparse. Most studies tested interventions with no comparison group, were far too short term, and the quality of some studies was poor. FUTURE WORK We think that the topics on which the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and Efficacy Mechanism and Evaluation (EME) programmes might consider commissioning primary research are in STGD, a HTA trial of fenretinide (ReVision Therapeutics, San Diego, CA, USA), a visual cycle inhibitor, and EME research into the value of lutein and zeaxanthin supplements, using short-term measures of retinal function. In AMD, we suggest trials of fenretinide and of a potent statin. There is epidemiological evidence from the USA that the drug, levodopa, used for treating Parkinson's disease, may reduce the incidence of AMD. We suggest that similar research should be carried out using the large general practice databases in the UK. Ideally, future research should be at earlier stages in both diseases, before vision is impaired, using sensitive measures of macular function. This may require early detection of AMD by screening. Abstract
BACKGROUND An intraocular lens (IOL) is a synthetic lens that is surgically implanted within the eye following removal of the crystalline lens, during cataract surgery. While all modern IOLs attenuate the transmission of ultra-violet (UV) light, some IOLs, called blue-blocking or blue-light filtering IOLs, also reduce short-wavelength visible light transmission. The rationale for blue-light filtering IOLs derives primarily from cell culture and animal studies, which suggest that short-wavelength visible light can induce retinal photoxicity. Blue-light filtering IOLs have been suggested to impart retinal protection and potentially prevent the development and progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We sought to investigate the evidence relating to these suggested benefits of blue-light filtering IOLs, and to consider any potential adverse effects. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of blue-light filtering IOLs compared with non-blue-light filtering IOLs, with respect to providing protection to macular health and function. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Trials Register) (2017, Issue 9); Ovid MEDLINE; Ovid Embase; LILACS; the ISRCTN registry; ClinicalTrials.gov and the ICTRP. The date of the search was 25 October 2017. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), involving adult participants undergoing cataract extraction, where a blue-light filtering IOL was compared with an equivalent non-blue-light filtering IOL. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS The prespecified primary outcome was the change in distance best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), as a continuous outcome, between baseline and 12 months of follow-up. Prespecified secondary outcomes included postoperative contrast sensitivity, colour discrimination, macular pigment optical density (MPOD), proportion of eyes with a pathological finding at the macula (including, but not limited to the development or progression of AMD, or both), daytime alertness, reaction time and patient satisfaction. We evaluated findings related to ocular and systemic adverse effects.Two review authors independently screened abstracts and full-text articles, extracted data from eligible RCTs and judged the risk of bias using the Cochrane tool. We reached a consensus on any disagreements by discussion. Where appropriate, we pooled data relating to outcomes and used random-effects or fixed-effect models for the meta-analyses. We summarised the overall certainty of the evidence using GRADE. MAIN RESULTS We included 51 RCTs from 17 different countries, although most studies either did not report relevant outcomes, or provided data in a format that could not be extracted. Together, the included studies considered the outcomes of IOL implantation in over 5000 eyes. The number of participants ranged from 13 to 300, and the follow-up period ranged from one month to five years. Only two of the studies had a trial registry record and no studies referred to a published protocol. We did not judge any of the studies to have a low risk of bias in all seven domains. We judged approximately two-thirds of the studies to have a high risk of bias in domains relating to 'blinding of participants and personnel' (performance bias) and 'blinding of outcome assessment' (detection bias).We found with moderate certainty, that distance BCVA with a blue-light filtering IOL, at six to 18 months postoperatively, and measured in logMAR, was not clearly different to distance BCVA with a non-blue-light filtering IOL (mean difference (MD) -0.01 logMAR, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.03 to 0.02, P = 0.48; 2 studies, 131 eyes).There was very low-certainty evidence relating to any potential inter-intervention difference for the proportion of eyes that developed late-stage AMD at three years of follow-up, or any stage of AMD at one year of follow-up, as data derived from one trial and two trials respectively, and there were no events in either IOL intervention group, for either outcome. There was very low-certainty evidence for the outcome for the proportion of participants who lost 15 or more letters of distance BCVA at six months of follow-up; two trials that considered a total of 63 eyes reported no events, in either IOL intervention group.There were no relevant, combinable data available for outcomes relating to the effect on contrast sensitivity at six months, the proportion of eyes with a measurable loss of colour discrimination from baseline at six months, or the proportion of participants with adverse events with a probable causal link with the study interventions after six months.We were unable to draw reliable conclusions on the relative equivalence or superiority of blue-light filtering IOLs versus non-blue-light filtering IOLs in relation to longer-term effects on macular health. We were also not able to determine with any certainty whether blue-light filtering IOLs have any significant effects on MPOD, contrast sensitivity, colour discrimination, daytime alertness, reaction time or patient satisfaction, relative to non-blue-light filtering IOLs. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS This systematic review shows with moderate certainty that there is no clinically meaningful difference in short-term BCVA with the two types of IOLs. Further, based upon available data, these findings suggest that there is no clinically meaningful difference in short-term contrast sensitivity with the two interventions, although there was a low level of certainty for this outcome due to a small number of included studies and their inherent risk of bias. Based upon current, best-available research evidence, it is unclear whether blue-light filtering IOLs preserve macular health or alter risks associated with the development and progression of AMD, or both. Further research is required to fully understand the effects of blue-light filtering IOLs for providing protection to macular health and function.

Abstract
We report on the solgel method of fabrication of thin films of high optical quality and with tunable index of refraction. The resulting coatings are hard, durable and robust against humidity and common organic solvents. Bragg mirrors and edge filters have been made by stacking these films. A blue light-blocking edge filter made by 2×21 stacked layers shows a transmittance of less than 1% in the stop band region while maintaining a high transmittance of over 80% in the rest of the visible spectral region with an integrated photopic transmittance of 89.7%.

Abstract
Purpose. Different IOL materials, particularly blue-light filtering materials, have different spectral transmittance characteristics. The color stimuli, which influence retinal receptors objectively, have consequently implications for color perception. We report on the quantitative determination of IOL-specific transmittance characteristics and present a method visualizing the resultant changes in color stimulus. Methods. A setup was realized to quantify IOL-absorption in a range of 390–780 nm. To visualize the influence of the different spectral transmittance characteristics an algorithm was developed, which converts RGB-pixel values of images into spectra, which performs the corresponding transmittance correction, reconverts to RGB, and reconstructs the image. IOLs of hydrophobic acrylate and hydrophilic acrylate with a hydrophobic surface in each case with/without blue-light filter were examined. Results. Assessment of the reference images verifies the suitability of the pipeline. Evaluation of the transmittance spectra reveals differences of material- and manufacturer-specifics, which are capable of inducing considerable changes in color perception, particularly in the blue color range and mixed colors involving blue. Conclusions. The developed technique provides an approach for determining IOL-specific transmittance behavior and subsequently its influence on the retinal color stimulus. Problems of altered color perception are occasionally reported after cataract surgery and these become obvious with the visualization procedure developed here.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cataract decreases blue light transmission. Because of the selective blue light sensitivity of the retinal ganglion cells governing circadian photoentrainment, cataract may interfere with normal sleep-wake regulation and cause sleep disturbances. The purpose was to investigate the effect of cataract surgery on circadian photoentrainment and to determine any difference between blue-blocking and neutral intraocular lenses (IOLs). DESIGN The study was a single-center, investigator-driven, double-masked, block-randomized clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS One eye in 76 patients with bilateral age-related cataract eligible for cataract surgery was included. METHODS Intervention was cataract surgery by phacoemulsification. Patients were randomized to receive a blue-blocking or neutral IOL. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome was activation of intrinsic photosensitive ganglion cells using post-illumination pupil response (PIPR) to blue light from 10 to 30 seconds after light exposure as a surrogate measure. Secondary outcomes were circadian rhythm analysis using actigraphy and 24-hour salivary melatonin measurements. Finally, objective and subjective sleep quality were determined by actigraphy and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS The blue light PIPR increased 2 days (17%) and 3 weeks (24%) after surgery (P < 0.001). The majority of circadian and sleep-specific actigraphy parameters did not change after surgery. A forward shift of the circadian rhythm by 22 minutes (P = 0.004) for actigraphy and a tendency toward an earlier melatonin onset (P = 0.095) were found. Peak salivary melatonin concentration increased after surgery (P = 0.037). No difference was detected between blue-blocking and neutral IOLs, whereas low preoperative blue light transmission was inversely associated with an increase in PIPR (P = 0.021) and sleep efficiency (P = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS Cataract surgery increases photoreception by the photosensitive retinal ganglion cells. Because of inconsistency between the significant findings and the many parameters that were unchanged, we can conclude that cataract surgery does not adversely affect the circadian rhythm or sleep. Longer follow-up time and fellow eye surgery may reveal the significance of the subtle changes observed. We found no difference between blue-blocking and neutral IOLs, and, because of the minor effect of surgery in itself, an effect of IOL type seems highly unlikely.

Abstract
Ultraviolet radiation, especially UVA, can penetrate the lens, reach the retina, and induce oxidative stress to retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Even though it is weakly absorbed by protein and DNA, it may trigger the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and generate oxidative injury; oxidative injury to the retinal pigment epithelium has been implicated to play a contributory role in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Studies showed that resveratrol, an abundant and active component of red grapes, can protect several cell types from oxidative stress. In this study, adult RPE cells being treated with different concentrations of resveratrol were used to evaluate the protective effect of resveratrol on RPE cells against UVA-induced damage. Cell viability assay showed that resveratrol reduced the UVA-induced decrease in RPE cell viability. Through flow cytometry analysis, we found that the generation of intracellular H2O2 induced by UVA irradiation in RPE cells could be suppressed by resveratrol in a concentration-dependent manner. Results of Western blot analysis demonstrated that resveratrol lowered the activation of UVA-induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-jun-NH2 terminal kinase and p38 kinase in RPE cells. In addition, there was also a reduction in UVA-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in RPE cells pretreated with resveratrol. Our observations suggest that resveratrol is effective in preventing RPE cells from being damaged by UVA radiation, and is worth considering for further development as a chemoprotective agent for the prevention of early AMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To analyze the effects of age, cataract surgery and postoperative period on macular pigment optical density (MPOD). METHODS The study included cases referred to Ankara University Department of Ophthalmology, between April and June 2012, who had a transparent natural lens or had undergone cataract surgery at least a year ago with their best corrected visual acuity of ≥ 0.5 based on Snellen chart. Presence of an ocular disease that might affect lens, retina and optic nerve (cataract, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma etc.), cataract surgery within the previous year, light-colored iris, smoking and use of micronutrition supplementation were determined as exclusion criteria. After detailed opthalmologic examination of all patients, they were divided into three groups based on their age and their lens status as: group 1, patients < 50 years of age having a clear lens; group 2, patients > 50 years of age having a clear lens; and group 3, patients > 50 years of age who had cataract surgery. Age, gender, and postoperative period of the patients as well as the MPOD values of the eyes measured with heterochromatic flicker photometric (HFP) method (MacularMetricsTM) were included in the analysis. RESULTS Sixty-eight eyes of 37 cases with a mean age of 53.4 ± 15.3 years were enrolled in the study. Group 1 included 20 eyes of 10 cases (mean age 29.4 ± 9.5); group 2 included 32 eyes of 16 cases (mean age 60.3 ± 6.8); and group 3 included 16 eyes of 11 cases (mean age 65.2 ± 9.7). The mean macular pigment optical density value of all cases was 0.511 ± 0.192 log unit, while the mean MPOD values of groups 1, 2 and 3 were 0.570 ± 170, 0.528 ± 203 and 0.400 ± 180 log units, respectively. The mean MPOD values of the patients with clear lens aged < 50 and aged > 50 years did not reveal a statisticially significant difference (p = 1). However, the mean MPOD value of the cataract surgery group (group 3) was found to be statistically significantly lower than the group 1 and group 2 (p = 0.022, p = 0.039, respectively). The correlations between MPOD values and postoperative periods of the patients in group 3 showed that a decrease in MPOD values in parallel with duration of the postoperative period and this negative correlation was found to be statistically significant (r: -0.66, p = 0.005). CONCLUSION Our study has demonstrated that a significant correlation does not exist between age of the patients and MPOD values. MPOD values were lower than age-matched patients who had undergone cataract surgery and finally an inverse correlation existed between duration of the postoperative period after cataract surgery and MPOD values.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate contrast sensitivity function (CSF) and color vision after implantation of either orange or yellow-tinted intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS Fifty-six eyes of 28 cataract patients who had bilateral implantation of orange-tinted (PC440Y Orange, Ophtec), yellow-tinted (AcrySof Natural SN60AT, Alcon), or clear (AcrySof SA60AT, Alcon) IOLs were examined. Six months postoperatively, monocular CSF under photopic and mesopic (with and without glare) conditions were measured using the Functional Visual Analyzer. Color discrimination was determined with the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test. RESULTS Patients implanted with orange-tinted, yellow-tinted, or clear IOLs displayed similar CSF values, with no statistically significant differences at any spatial frequency (p>0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in chromatic discrimination among the 3 groups of patients (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Orange or yellow blue-filtering IOL implantation is comparable to a clear IOL in terms of photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity or color discrimination.

Abstract
PURPOSE After determining the mean intensity of ultraviolet radiation to which the human eye is exposed at Mediterranean latitudes, this data is used to evaluate the efficacy of the ultraviolet filters incorporated into various intraocular lenses. METHODS Ultraviolet radiation measured at Mediterranean latitudes was used as a reference for the theoretical calculation of the amount of radiation to which the human eye is exposed. The spectral transmission curve from 290 to 380 nm was measured for 10 IOLs using a UV/VIS Perkins-Elmer Lambda 800 spectrometer. RESULTS At Mediterranean latitudes, at sea level, with a mean annual solar irradiation of 50 j/cm(2), the human eye receives a quantity of UVA and UVB that is lower than the threshold toxic dose for the rabbit crystalline lens (93 j/cm(2) for UVA and 6.45 j/cm(2) for UVB). However, at higher altitudes and with albedo approaching 0.9 (fresh snow), the amount of radiation increases, with duration of exposure potentially playing a significant role. The UV filters incorporated into the IOLs studied are, in general, protective against such levels of radiation. CONCLUSION At Mediterranean latitudes, at sea level, the amount of UV radiation to which our eyes are exposed is insufficient to damage the crystalline lens; however, at higher altitudes, the risk of such damage exists. UV filters incorporated into intraocular lenses are generally effective, since they filter all radiation with wavelengths under 380 nm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A number of published randomized controlled trials have been conducted to evaluate visual performance of blue light-filtering intraocular lenses (IOL) and UV light-filtering intraocular lenses (IOL) after cataract phacoemulsification surgery. However, results have not always been consistent. Therefore, we carried out a meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of blue light-filtering IOLs versus UV light-filtering IOLs in cataract surgery. METHODS AND FINDINGS Comprehensive searches of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and the Chinese BioMedical literature databases were performed using web-based search engines. Fifteen trials (1690 eyes) were included for systematic review, and 11 of 15 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that there were no significant differences in postoperative mean best corrected visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, overall color vision, or in the blue light spectrum under photopic light conditions between blue light-filtering IOLs and UV light-filtering IOLs [WMD = -0.01, 95%CI (-0.03, 0.01), P = 0.46; WMD = 0.07, 95%CI (-0.04, 0.19), P = 0.20; SMD = 0.14, 95%CI (-0.33, 0.60), P = 0.566; SMD = 0.20, 95%CI (-0.04, 0.43), P = 0.099]. However, color vision with blue light-filtering IOLs was significantly reduced in the blue light spectrum under mesopic light conditions [SMD = 0.74, 95%CI (0.29, 1.18), P = 0.001]. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis demonstrates that postoperative visual performance with blue light-filtering IOLs is approximately equal to that of UV light-filtering IOLs after cataract surgery, but color vision with blue light-filtering IOLs demonstrated some compromise in the blue light spectrum under mesopic light conditions.

Abstract
AIM To prepare a new-type soft intraocular lens (IOL) that silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) were modified by surface modification technique to assess IOLs biocompatibility. METHODS With the technique of ion beam combined with low temperature and low pressure plasma, the surface characteristics of the IOLs including physical and optical properties were determined by the instruments of IOLs resolution, UV/VIS scanning spectrophotometer, contact angle measurement system, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). RESULTS The color of titanium (Ti) modified IOLs was light yellow and that of titanium nitride (TiN) modified IOLs was light brown. The absorptive degree of ultraviolet rays and the hydrophilicity of the surfaces of modified IOLs were increased, and appeared suitable chemical compositions. The resolution of unmodified and modified IOLs reached normal standard. The surfaces of unmodified and Ti-modified IOLs appeared uniform. The surfaces of TiN-modified IOLs presented fine porcelain structure. CONCLUSION The optical properties of all IOLs and the surface morphology of the modified IOLs were not affected by modification processes. The surface properties of the modified IOLs were improved.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the spectral transmission characteristics of currently available, foldable, clear and yellow-tinted intraocular lenses (IOLs), and evaluate the protective effects they provide against retinal damage by sunlight. METHODS We measured the spectral transmittance in the wavelength range of 300-800 nm using a spectrophotometer for 63 IOLs including three clear IOLs (N4-18B, Nidek; X-60, Santen; KS-3Ai, Staar Japan) and four yellow-tinted IOLs (N4-18YG, Nidek; NX-60, Santen; KS-AiN, Staar Japan; NM-1, Hoya) with three different lens powers. The blue-light irradiance (BLI) values through the IOLs were calculated as the retinal hazard index for sungazing. The data from three clear IOLs (SA60AT, Alcon Japan; VA-60BBR, Hoya; AU6K, Kowa) and three yellow-tinted IOLs (SN60AT, Alcon Japan; YA-60BBR, Hoya; AU6N, Kowa) reported previously were also discussed. RESULTS Except for the X-60, the clear IOLs completely absorbed ultraviolet (UV) light and nearly completely transmitted visible light at wavelengths longer than 440 nm. Yellow-tinted IOLs absorbed more in the blue-light range (400-500 nm) than clear IOLs. All IOLs had lower BLI values than aphakic eyes, and all yellow-tinted IOLs had lower BLI values than phakic eyes. The BLI values of the NX-60, KS-AiN, NM-1, SN60AT and YA-60BBR IOLs decreased with the increase in lens power. CONCLUSIONS Compared to aphakic eyes, currently available UV-blocking clear and yellow-tinted IOLs reduce the BLI values by 43-82%. However, the data presented in this study are not directly applicable to humans implanted with IOLs or for the use of IOLs in a clinical situation, since in those cases the balance between photoprotection and photoreception must be taken into account.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the contrast sensitivity, glare, color perception, and visual acuity at different light intensities with yellow-tinted and clear intraocular lenses (IOLs) by different manufacturers. SETTING Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Retinology and Biomicroscopic Laser-Surgery, Department of Ophthalmology, Rudolf Foundation Clinic, Vienna, Austria. DESIGN Comparative case series. METHODS Eyes were randomized to 1 of the following IOLs: AF-1 (UY) (yellow tinted), AcrySof SN60AT (yellow tinted), AF-1 (UV) (clear), or AcrySof SA60AT (clear). One week and 2 months postoperatively, monocular contrast sensitivity function and color discrimination were tested and the corrected distance and near visual acuities were evaluated. All tests were performed under different light intensities (10 to 1000 lux). RESULTS Of the 80 patients enrolled, 76 completed the study; there were 37 eyes in the yellow-tinted IOL group and 39 in the clear IOL group. There were no significant differences between yellow-tinted IOLs and clear IOLs except in color vision under mesopic conditions (10 lux). Patients with a yellow-tinted IOL made significantly more mistakes in the blue-light spectrum than patients with clear IOLs (P = .00015). There was no significant difference under photopic conditions (1000 lux). CONCLUSIONS The yellow-tinted IOLs were equivalent to the clear IOLs in postoperative contrast sensitivity, visual acuity, and color perception under photopic conditions. Patients with yellow-tinted IOLs made statistically significantly more mistakes in the blue range under dim light than patients with clear IOLs.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the spectral transmission of different intraocular lenses (IOLs) with either ultraviolet (UV) or blue-light filters, and to analyze the performance of these filters with artificial light sources as well as sunlight. DESIGN Experimental study. METHODS The spectral transmission curve of 10 IOLs was measured using a PerkinElmer Lambda 800 UV/VIS spectrometer (Waltham, MA). Different filtering simulations were performed using the D65 standard illuminant as daylight and standard incandescent lamp and fluorescent bulb illuminants. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES Spectral transmittance of the IOLs. RESULTS All the IOLs studied provide good UVC (200-280 nm) and UVB (280-315 nm) protection, except for one that presented an appreciable window at 270 nm. Nevertheless, both natural and artificial sources have practically no emission under 300 nm. In the UVA (315-380 nm) range the curves of the different IOLs manifested different degrees of absorption. CONCLUSIONS Not all the UV filters incorporated in different IOLs protect equally. The filters that provide greater photoprotection against UV radiation, even blue light, are yellow and orange. Then, yellow and orange IOL filters may be best suited for cases requiring special retinal protection. The filters that favor better photoreception of visible light (380-780 nm) are those that transmit this radiation close to 100%. Artificial illumination practically does not emit in the UV range, but its levels of illumination are very low when compared with solar light. A possible balance between photoprotection and photoreception could be a sharp cutoff filter with the cutoff wavelength near 400 nm and a maximum transmittance around 100%.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effect of yellow tinted intraocular lenses (IOLs), implanted in the bag after phacoemulsification, on the result of frequency doubling technique (FDT) perimetry. Methods For 68 eyes of 52 patients, an IOL was implanted in the bag after phacoemulsification. The patients were categorized into three groups according to the type of implanted IOLs used. IOLs were selected randomly among two types of yellow IOLs (Acrysof SN60WF IOL, Hoya YA60BBR IOL) and a clear IOL was used as a control. A FDT Humphrey matrix was performed 2 months after the surgery. The mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) among these three groups was analyzed using Mann-Whitney U-test. Results Two months after the procedure, there was no significant difference between each of the three groups: the clear IOL and Hoya YA60BBR IOL (MD, p = 0.21; PSD, p = 0.27), the clear IOL and Alcon SN60WF IOL (MD, p = 0.11; PSD, p = 0.22), and the Hoya YA60BBR IOL and Alcon SN60WF IOL (MD, p = 0.33; PSD, p = 0.56). Conclusions When interpreting the result of the FDT after cataract surgery, the color and type of IOLs used should not be considered.

Abstract
Intraocular lenses (IOLs) that block both ultraviolet and blue wavelength light (<500 nm)were introduced in the 1990s. Since then, the potential benefits and harm from blocking blue light has been debated. We report the results of a complete review of all peer-reviewed published studies regarding the impact of blocking the transmission of blue light. Fifty-six published reports on subjects related to blue-blocking lenses including sleep disturbance, visual outcomes, cataract surgery, lens transmittance, sunlight exposure, and macular disease were found in peer reviewed journals from 1962 to 2009. Eleven reports specifically compared visual outcomes between blue-blocking IOLs and nonblue-locking IOLs. Of these, 10 independent studies (10/11, 91%) concluded that there are no significant effects of blue-blocking IOLs on various meters of visual performance including visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, color perception, and photopic, mesopic, and scotopic sensitivities. Only one group of authors reported that the use of blue-blocking IOLs may have detrimental effects on scotopic vision and circadian rhythms. However, the actual clinical significance of these potential negative effects on scotopic vision and on sleep patterns is uncertain. The benefits of blocking the transmission of blue light to the macula and the relationship between progression of age-related macular degeneration remain unclear. However, the published studies clearly state that the use of blue-blocking IOLs is not detrimental in visual acuity, color perception, and contrast sensitivity. The reported potential negative effects on scotopic vision and sleep disturbance appear to be minimal and may not be clinically relevant. (Surv Ophthalmol 55:284--289, 2010. 2010 Elsevier Inc. Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate photopic and mesopic color discrimination in patients with different types of light-filtering intraocular lenses (IOLs). SETTING Peking University Third Hospital, Peking University Eye Center, Beijing, China. METHODS Cataract patients with different types of IOLs were enrolled 3 months postoperatively. Overall and partial color discrimination under photopic (1000 lux) and mesopic (40 lux) conditions were evaluated with the Farnsworth-Munsell (FM) 100-hue test. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was tested under both conditions. Subjective visual quality was assessed with the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25). RESULTS The study evaluated 43 patients with a blue light-filtering IOL (15 photochromic, 13 yellow tinted) or an IOL filtering ultraviolet light only (n = 15). The difference in the FM 100-hue total error scores under photopic or mesopic conditions was not statistically significant between groups. There were no statistically significant differences in partial error scores in the 10 bands of the FM 100-hue color circle under photopic conditions. Under mesopic condition, there were statistically significant differences in partial error scores in the green to blue-green band (color caps 36 to 46) and the blue-green to blue band (color caps 46 to 54) (P = .005 and P = .030, respectively). There were no statistically significant differences in mean overall or subheading NEI VFQ-25 scores. CONCLUSIONS Filtering blue lights under mesopic conditions seemed to modify color discrimination in the green-to-blue bands postoperatively. The modification did not disturb overall color discrimination or cause subjective discomfort.

Abstract
PURPOSE To record and compare the spectral transmission characteristics of foldable untinted and yellow-tinted intraocular lenses (IOLs) and evaluate the protective effects against retinal damage by sunlight. SETTING Shimane University Faculty of Medicine, Izumo, Japan. METHODS The study evaluated 3 untinted IOLs (SA60AT, VA-60BBR, AU6 K) and 3 yellow-tinted IOLs (SN60AT, YA-60BBR, AU6 N) of 3 lens powers (+10.0 diopters [D], +20.0 D, and +30.0 D). Spectral transmittance in the wavelength range of 300 to 800 nm was measured using a spectrophotometer through 2.5 mm and 4.5 mm diameter apertures. Retinal hazard indices, including blue-light irradiance and maximum permissible exposure duration per day (t(max)) for viewing sunlight, were calculated. RESULTS The untinted IOLs completely absorbed ultraviolet (UV) light and nearly completely absorbed transmitted visible light at wavelengths longer than 440 nm. Yellow-tinted IOLs absorbed more in the blue-light range (400 to 500 nm) than untinted IOLs. The blue-light irradiance was 34.2% to 56.0% lower with the SN60AT IOL than with the SA60AT IOL, 35.2% to 48.4% lower with the YA-60BBR IOL than with the VA-60BBR IOL, and 16.8% to 22.9% lower with the AU6 N IOL than with the AU6 K IOL. Blue-light irradiance values of SN60AT and YA-60BBR IOLs decreased as the lens power increased. CONCLUSIONS Compared with aphakic eyes, UV-blocking untinted IOLs reduced the blue-light irradiance value by 60%; yellow-tinted IOLs conferred an additional 17% to 56% reduction. The difference in lens power was significantly related to the blue-light irradiance value of some yellow-tinted IOLs. .
