Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Clinical information on enamel wear opposing 5 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (5Y-TZP) or lithium disilicate crowns is lacking. Moreover, the effect of surface roughness on the wear of enamel antagonists remains unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to quantify the vertical wear and total volume of wear while also measuring the surface roughness of antagonists at 6-month intervals over 2 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS A tooth-supported first molar 5Y-TZP Lava Esthetic Fluorescent Zirconia crown or an IPS e.max CAD lithium disilicate crown was randomly provided for 24 participants (n=12). The contralateral first molar and opposite teeth were the natural enamel controls. The crowns were fabricated using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology and then polished. The data were gathered every 6 months at recall appointments with an intraoral scanner and a polyvinyl siloxane impression. A 3-dimensional (3D) comparative software program was used to measure the maximum vertical and volume loss on opposing enamel, as well as on the enamel control on the opposite side of the mouth. The surface of epoxy resin replicas was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. The surface roughness of the cusp replica was measured with a 3D laser microscope. The crown's antagonist enamel and natural enamel wear were compared using a 2-way repeated measure ANOVA (α=.05). RESULTS No significant difference was found in the average volume loss between the crown's antagonist enamel (ZTE 0.042 ±0.005 mm3, LTE 0.048 ±0.006 mm3) and the enamel control (ZCE 0.046 ±0.004 mm3, LCE 0.050 ±0.005 mm3) (P>.05). No significant difference was found in surface roughness between the crown's antagonist enamel (antagonist enamel of zirconia group [ZTE] 0.7 ±0.3 µm, antagonist enamel of lithium disilicate group [LTE] 0.6 ±0.3 µm) and the enamel control (enamel control of zirconia group [ZCE] 0.7 ±0.3 µm, enamel control of lithium disilicate group [LCE] 0.5 ±0.2 µm) in both zirconia and lithium disilicate groups (P>.05). Also, no correlation was found between the amount of wear and the roughness of the surface. The wear patterns observed on the opposing enamel surfaces of the monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate materials were found to be similar to those seen on natural enamel. CONCLUSIONS A 2-year clinical investigation found that polished lithium disilicate and 5Y-TZP crowns did not affect enamel wear more than enamel against enamel, contrary to laboratory studies. Another finding revealed that surface roughness did not significantly affect wear.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount of enamel tooth wear induced by different antagonistic ceramic crown materials in the posterior area within a follow-up period up to 24 months in function. A network meta-analysis was performed to assess the effect of the materials on the mean vertical loss (MVL) of the antagonist enamel tooth surface. DATA Main search terms used in combination: ceramic, dental materials, metal ceramic, tooth wear and dental enamel. SOURCES An electronic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL plus hand-searching. STUDY SELECTION Eligibility criteria included clinical studies reporting on MVL on antagonist's tooth up to 24 months following the permanent crown placement. From a total of 5697 articles, 7 studies reporting on 261 crowns for 177 subjects with 3 ceramic materials (Lithium disilicate, metal-ceramic, monolithic zirconia) were included. Among all, metal-ceramic and zirconia caused significantly higher enamel tooth wear on antagonist teeth, representing 82.5 µm [54.4; 110.6]) and 40.1 µm [22.2; 58.0]) more MVL than natural teeth group. In contrast, lithium disilicate showed only 5.0 µm [-48.2; 58.1]) more MVL than occurs on opposing natural teeth. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review demonstrated that prosthodontic ceramic materials produced significantly more antagonist enamel tooth wear than opposing natural enamel tooth wear, and ceramic material type was correlated to the degree of enamel tooth wear. Additional well-conducted, randomized controlled trials with homogeneous specimens are required due to inadequate sample size and number of the clinical studies included in the analyses. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The amount of wear caused by different restorative materials has a high influence on the antagonistic natural teeth and should therefore be evaluated intensively by the dentist.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the maximum vertical wear, volume wear, and surface characteristic of antagonist enamel, opposing monolithic zirconia or lithium disilicate crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study comprised 24 participants (n = 12), who were randomly allocated to receive either a 5 mol% Y-TZP or a lithium disilicate crown in positions which would oppose the natural first molar tooth. The contralateral first molar along with its antagonist was considered as the enamel opposing natural enamel control. Data collection was performed using an intraoral scanner and polyvinylsiloxane impression. The means of the maximum vertical loss and the volume loss at the occlusal contact areas of the crowns and the various natural antagonists were measured by 3D comparison software. A scanning electron microscope was subsequently used to assess the wear characteristics. Results The one-year results from 22 participants (n = 11) indicated no significant differences when comparing the zirconia crown's antagonist enamel (40.28 ± 9.11 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) and the natural enamel wear (38.91 ± 7.09 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) (P > .05). Also, there is no significant differences between lithium disilicate crown's antagonist enamel (47.81 ± 9.41 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) and the natural enamel wear (39.11 ± 7.90 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) (P > .05). Conclusion While some studies suggested that monolithic zirconia caused less wear on opposing enamel than lithium disilicate, this study found similar wear levels to enamel for both materials compared to natural teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the influence of different finishing procedures on the surface roughness, wear resistance and fracture load of strength-gradient multilayered zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Zirconia crowns (Multilayer 3D pro; n = 96) were manufactured and treated with a lithium-silicate- (LISI_S), leucite-based glaze spray (LEU_S), leucite-based glaze mass (LEU_M) or polished (POL). Natural molars (CG; n = 24) acted as a control. Roughness was determined on flat glazed specimens (n = 28). Two-body wear was examined by digitalizing and matching the occlusal surface before and after thermo-mechanical aging (6,000 thermal and 1,200,000 chewing cycles). The groups were split to measure fracture load initially and after aging. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Spearman correlation, Kruskal-Wallis-H, Levene's test, one-way ANOVA with Scheffé post-hoc and Weibull modulus were computed. RESULTS POL presented the lowest and LEU_S the highest roughness. Following POL, no ceramic loss was observed. LISI_S, LEU_S and LEU_M showed lower ceramic wear than the CG. The lowest wear of the antagonist was observed for the CG. LISI_S showed a lower antagonistic wear than LEU_S, LEU_M and POL. LISI_S, LEU_S, LEU_M and POL showed higher fracture load values and Weibull moduli than the CG. Artificial aging did not impact the fracture load or Weibull moduli. SIGNIFICANCE With glazed groups showing height losses closer to the CG, glazing should be preferred to polishing when approximating the wear behavior of a natural dentition. Finishing of monolithic zirconia by glazing with a lithium silicate-based spray is recommended to preserve the antagonists. All examined zirconia crowns presented sufficient mechanical properties to withstand masticatory forces, even after prolonged aging.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Occlusal devices used to manage bruxism have been commonly fabricated from polymethyl methacrylate with the powder-liquid technique. More recently, Vertex ThermoSens (VTS) and the biocompatible high-performance polymer (BioHPP), an optimized material having polyetheretherketone (PEEK) as its basis, have been used, but little is known about the wear of these materials on human enamel. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess via a mastication simulation test how 3 occlusal device materials affected the wear and roughness of enamel antagonists. MATERIAL AND METHODS A noncontact 3D optical profilometer was used to measure the enamel surface roughness (Ra) against 3 occlusal device materials: vertex regular, VTS, and PEEK high-performance polymer (BioHPP). A dual-axis mastication simulator was used to perform a 2-body wear test on specimens from each group. The test consisted of 10 000 cycles with a 70-N force and 5 to 55 °C thermocycling. Following simulated mastication, the weight of each specimen and the Ra change were compared with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, paired specimens t test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and 1-way analysis of variance (α=.05). RESULTS The polyamide group caused the lowest amount of enamel wear (P<.05), while the heat-polymerized acrylic resin group induced the largest amount of enamel wear (P<.05). For polyamide and PEEK, the change in enamel surface roughness exhibited a smooth texture, whereas it found a rougher surface for the heat-polymerized acrylic resin. CONCLUSIONS According to this study, surface roughness and wear on human enamel were not correlated. PEEK is a promising material for the fabrication of occlusal devices.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Which surface treatment provides optimal surface roughness, microhardness, and wear behavior for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials and their enamel antagonists is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment on the surface roughness, microhardness, and 2-body wear of different CAD-CAM materials and their enamel antagonists. MATERIAL AND METHODS Monolithic zirconia, polymer-infiltrated ceramic network, lithium disilicate, leucite-reinforced ceramic, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate, and feldspathic ceramic specimens were sliced into 2-mm-thick rectangular plates and divided into polished or glazed subgroups (n=6). After surface roughness and microhardness measurements, the specimens were loaded at 49 N for 250 000 cycles and simultaneously thermocycled (5 °C and 55 °C). All specimens were scanned before and after the wear test by using a scanner. The volumetric loss and wear depth of the materials and the volumetric and height loss of the enamel were calculated, and scanning electron microscope images of the specimens were made. Multiple 2-way ANOVAs and Tukey honestly significant difference tests were used to assess the effect of material and surface treatment on surface roughness, microhardness, and wear behavior of materials and enamel (α=.05). RESULTS Material and surface treatment interactions affected the surface roughness (P<.001), microhardness (P<.001), volumetric loss of materials (P=.044), and height loss of enamel (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Polishing resulted in higher surface roughness and microhardness than glazing. Volumetric loss depended on the material, which affected the height loss of the antagonists. Glazing and polishing had similar effects on the volumetric loss of materials and antagonists. No correlation was found between the wear of materials and the antagonists, nor between the surface roughness of materials and the volumetric loss of materials or antagonists.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the surface roughness of glazed and polished monolithic ceramic materials and to use this as a baseline for comparison after adjustment and polishing with both the recommended kit for the specific materials as well as interchanged polishing kits. MATERIAL AND METHODS Flat ceramic specimens (n = 150) were fabricated from IPS ZirCAD Prime, IPS E.max, and Vitabloc Mark II. The specimens were adjusted and polished using either the proprietary polishing kit for the material or interchanged kits. The surface roughness was objectively assessed using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and profilometer. Subjective assessment of surface finish was performed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Gravimetric weight loss of each sample was measured before and after polishing using a digital microscale. The mean surface roughness and standard deviation was calculated for each ceramic- polisher pair. A factorial ANOVA was used to compare the mean surface roughness values in nanometers between multiple groups (α = 0.05). The subjective results from the SEM were reported as descriptive statistics RESULTS: The zirconia polishing system produced surfaces with the lowest surface roughness regardless of the ceramic material. The polisher-ceramic combination was found to have a statistically significant effect on both Ra and RMS values when the AFM was used (p = 0.039 and 0.010, respectively). CONCLUSION The zirconia polishing system resulted in the lowest surface roughness values regardless of ceramic materials tested. The zirconia polishing system also did not result in significant gravimetric weight loss regardless of the ceramic material used.

Abstract
PURPOSE Various surface roughness parameters are utilized to describe the surface in the tooth to ceramics abrasion and to assess the resulting wear. The use of three-dimensional parameters may offer a better estimation for wear and an improved deduced clinical surface treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of various surface roughness parameters of zirconia and lithium disilicate ceramics on the wear of steatite antagonists. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty zirconia specimens with a diameter of 7 mm and a thickness of 3 mm and 40 lithium disilicate specimens with the dimensions 10×10×4 mm were each divided into five subgroups. Two subgroups were treated with different clinically established diamond burs; a third subgroup was treated with a silicone polishing set. Two additional subgroups were produced by glazing the surfaces after treatment. Surface roughness parameters were determined by laser scanning microscopy. All specimens underwent 1.2 million loading cycles using steatite antagonists. After regular intervals of cycles, precision impressions were made to assess the wear. The correlation between wear and different roughness parameters was evaluated using the Spearman correlation test. RESULTS For the glazed zirconia, unglazed zirconia, and glazed lithium disilicate specimens no significant correlations (p > 0.05) between the investigated roughness parameters and antagonist wear could be found. In the unglazed lithium disilicate groups, significant (p ≤ 0.05) correlations with steatite substance loss could be found for several roughness parameters after 1.2 million cycles. CONCLUSIONS For lithium disilicate, it seems not sufficient to use only one roughness parameter to indicate the wear behavior of the surface. There was no correlation between wear and the tested roughness parameters of zirconia surfaces.

Abstract
PURPOSE Rapid sintering technology has become one of the most direct methods for shortening the manufacturing time of zirconia restorations. This study aimed to explore the aging resistance of rapid-sintered 5 mol% yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ). METHODS Specimens were made from two types of 5Y-PSZ material and subjected to rapid sintering (RS) and conventional sintering (CS). After in vitro aging for 5 h, morphology observation, grain size measurement, and phase composition analysis were performed. The mechanical properties were evaluated by biaxial, three-point flexural tests, and the Vickers microhardness test. Results were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA. RESULTS Both the RS group and the CS group had a dense microstructure. The tested zirconia ceramics had different grain sizes, which were affected by the interaction between the sintering method and aging. Both groups revealed the same characteristic peaks of the cubic phase after aging. Regardless of the sintering method used, there was no significant difference in the mechanical properties of the tested zirconia before and after aging. CONCLUSION The rapid-sintered 5Y-PSZ materials had a microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties similar to those of conventional sintered materials. The characteristics of the materials prepared using the two sintering methods did not change significantly after aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The background and clinical understanding of the properties of currently available indirect restorative systems and fabrication methods is, along with manufacturer and evidence-based literature, an important starting point to guide the clinical selection of materials for tooth and/or implant supported reconstructions. Therefore, this review explores most indirect restorative systems available in the market, especially all-ceramic, along with aspects of manufacturing process, clinical survival rates, and esthetic outcomes. OVERVIEW Progressive incorporation of new technologies in the dental field and advancements in materials science have enabled the development/improvement of indirect restorative systems and treatment concepts in oral rehabilitation, resulting in reliable and predictable workflows and successful esthetic and functional outcomes. Indirect restorative systems have evolved from metal ceramics and polymers to glass ceramics, polycrystalline ceramics, and resin-matrix ceramics, aiming to improve not only biological and mechanical properties, but especially the optical properties and esthetic quality of the reconstructions, in attempt to mimic natural teeth. CONCLUSIONS Based on several clinical research, materials, and patient-related parameters, a decision tree for the selection of indirect restorative materials was suggested to guide clinicians in the rehabilitation process. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The pace of materials development is faster than that of clinical research aimed to support their use. Since no single material provides an ideal solution to every case, professionals must continuously seek information from well designed, long-term clinical trials in order to incorporate or not new materials and technological advancements.

Abstract
We conducted a six-month clinical follow-up on computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing-fabricated molar polyetheretherketone PEEK crowns to investigate their therapeutic effect. Only the PEEK crowns were examined as our study focused on short-term clinical evaluation of the new PEEK material. Twenty-three cases of PEEK crowns placed on the molars of 20 subjects (7 males and 13 females, mean age: 60.6 ± 14.2 years) were included in the study. The evaluation items were the condition of the crowns at the time of cementation and after six months, patient satisfaction, masticatory ability, and occlusal force. Mann-Whitney U tests with a significance level of 5% were used to examine the difference in glucose concentration by masticatory ability, occlusal pressure, and occlusal force, with and without PEEK crowns. The occlusion, margin fit, and contact of all 23 cases at the time of cementing were good. Six months after cementation, there was no crown desorption, fracture or crack, and prosthodontics was not needed in the 22 cases (one patient dropped out). No wear of the dental antagonist was observed. Patient satisfaction was generally high. There was no significant difference in masticatory ability between the groups with and without PEEK crowns. The subject's occlusal force was within the normal range. PEEK crowns used on molars can replace metal crowns and hold promise for an appropriate and effective treatment.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The ceramic 5-mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (5Y-ZP) has been developed for dental use in the esthetic zone with greater translucency than 3-mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-ZP). However, studies on the wear behavior of 5Y-ZP zirconia against clinically relevant antagonist materials are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the wear behavior of 5Y-ZP zirconia against the antagonists 5Y-ZP zirconia, lithium disilicate, palladium alloy, and human enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS Flat specimens (n=8) were fabricated from 5Y-ZP zirconia, lithium disilicate, palladium alloy, and human central incisor enamel. A custom wear-simulating device with a sliding pin-on-plate configuration was used for a total of 120 000 wear cycles at 1.6-Hz frequency under a 49-N vertical load while submerged in distilled water at room temperature. The wear volume and maximum wear depth of flat specimens were evaluated with a 3D profilometer. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the characteristics of the worn surfaces. RESULTS After wear simulation, the 5Y-ZP zirconia and palladium-silver alloy specimens exhibited the least amount of material loss, both in terms of maximum wear depth and wear volume (0.079 ±0.042 μm, 0.001 ±0.001 mm3 and 0.637 ±0.307 μm, 0.001 ±0.000 mm3, respectively). This was followed by human enamel (6.034 ±1.086 μm, 0.009 ±0.001 mm3) and by lithium disilicate, which showed excessive material loss (38.342 ±2.569 μm, 0.213 ±0.024 mm3). Scanning electron microscopy revealed variations in wear mechanisms among the materials. CONCLUSIONS The 5Y-ZP zirconia and palladium-silver alloy exhibited the lowest wear, followed by human enamel and lithium disilicate. Slight grain dislodgement was displayed on worn 5Y-ZP surfaces, while more apparent grain dislodgement and wear grooves were found on lithium disilicate. Plastic deformation of worn palladium-silver alloy accumulated at the end of wear track. Cracks were detected in the human enamel specimens.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the wear resistance and abrasiveness of monolithic CAD/CAM ceramics. Materials and methods Rectangular-shaped specimens (12 mm × 6.5 mm × 1.5 mm) were sectioned from the following CAD/CAM blocks (n = 10); partially crystallized lithium disilicate (PLD), experimental fully crystallized lithium disilicate (FLD), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS), super-translucent monolithic zirconia (SMZ), and ultra-translucent monolithic zirconia (UMZ). Silicon carbide papers were used to mechanically flatten and polish the surfaces. PLD specimens were subjected to a combined crystallization/glazing firing cycle. Ceramic specimens were mounted to the wear device and tested for 200,000 cycles against human premolars at 20 N force and 2 mm sliding distance. Artificial saliva was used as a lubricant. The teeth were scanned using micro-CT before and after the wear test and the generated models were overlapped to determine the volumetric tooth loss. Before and after the test, specimens’ weights and surface roughness (Ra) values were measured, and the differences were calculated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were utilized for microstructural and chemical analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA or an equivalent test for non-parametric results. Significance level was set at P ≤ 0.05. Results The type of ceramic material affected the ceramic and antagonist wear rates (P < 0.001). PLD and ZLS had the highest ceramic and antagonist wear, whereas UMZ and SMZ demonstrated the lowest wear values. The FLD group showed comparable antagonist wear and significantly less ceramic wear than PLD and ZLS. Conclusions Monolithic zirconia demonstrated the best wear resistance and least abrasiveness to the antagonist. The experimental lithium disilicate was more wear-resistant than other glass–ceramic groups. Clinical relevance Monolithic zirconia is wear-resistant and gentle on the antagonist. Abstract
OBJECTIVE An assessment was performed to identify and evaluate dental enamel wear caused by monolithic zirconia restoration. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane Evidence, and the Cochrane Library up to May 2020. MATERIAL AND METHODS Studies were selected for systematic review according to the inclusion (articles conducted on the wear of enamel samples opposing monolithic zirconia) and exclusion (case reports, non-English articles, and monolithic zirconia samples facing other materials rather than human enamel) criteria. Of those, articles on polished and glazed monolithic zirconia subjected to a 50 N vertical load with a range of 240,000-250,000 cycles, equivalent to 1 year of in vivo mastication, were included in the meta-analysis. RESULTS In total, 3968 articles were pooled. Twenty-five articles met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review. Three studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that the enamel wear against monolithic zirconia was within the statistically accepted level. Moreover, the polished monolithic zirconia surface caused less enamel wear than the glazed surface. CONCLUSION This review indicates that monolithic zirconia restorations cause acceptable antagonist enamel wear. Moreover, the meta-analysis results agreed that the final restoration's surface texture plays an essential role in the wear process. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Monolithic zirconia restorations have been widely used in dental practice because they eliminate the chipping problems resulting from using veneered restorations. With recent technology development, monolithic zirconia has obtained more esthetic features and a more natural look. However, due to the high strength and surface roughness of monolithic zirconia, wear on the antagonist's teeth was detected. The results showed that this wear amount was statistically acceptable and lower than other ceramics such as feldspathic porcelain and enamel. Furthermore, surface treatment methods must be applied to minimize tooth wear, as polished or glazed surfaces interfere with enamel loss.

Abstract
Objective. The wear behavior of the novel zirconia generation is less well understood and may be affected by compositional modifications compared to the conventional zirconia. Materials and Methods. Combinations of keywords such as “zirconia,” “high translucent,” and “wear” were searched in PubMed and Google Scholar databases up to May 2021. The total of 23 relevant articles was selected according to inclusion criteria. Results. Reports show comparable wear resistance of translucent zirconia to the conventional zirconia despite an increased cubic phase content and lower mean flexural strength. A meticulously polished surface creates the lowest surface roughness, producing favorable zirconia wear resistance and antagonist wear compared to a glazed surface. In comparison to other ceramic materials, zirconia produces the least wear on an enamel antagonist and almost undetectable wear when opposed by zirconia. Wear when paired against resin materials yields a favorable outcome, whereas wear behavior against a metal antagonist varies with the surface hardness of the metal. Conclusions. All zirconia generations are considered wear-friendly to all types of antagonists. Nonetheless, comparative studies on antagonist wear opposing zirconia of different compositions are still limited and further investigation is required.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the wear of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) dental ceramic materials opposed by enamel as a function of increased chewing forces. MATERIALS AND METHODS The enamel cusps of healthy human third molar teeth (n = 40) opposed by materials from CAD-CAM dental ceramic groups (n = 10), including Vita Enamic® (ENA), a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN); GC Cerasmart® (CERA), a resin nanoceramic; Celtra® Duo (DUO), a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) ceramic; and IPS e.max ZirCAD (ZIR), a polycrystalline zirconia, were exposed to chewing simulation (1,200,000 cycles; 120 N load; 1 Hz frequency; 0.7 mm lateral and 2 mm vertical motion). The wear of both enamel cusps and materials was quantified using a 3D laser scanner, and the wear mechanisms were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results were analysed using Welch ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis test (α = .05). RESULTS ZIR showed lower volume loss (0.02 ± 0.01 mm3) than ENA, CERA and DUO (P = .001, P = .018 and P = .005, respectively). The wear of cusp/DUO [0.59 mm3 (0.50-1.63 mm3)] was higher than cusp/CERA[0.17 mm3 (0.04-0.41 mm3)] (P = .007). ZIR showed completely different wear mechanism in SEM. CONCLUSION Composite structured materials such as PICN and ZLS ceramic exhibit more abrasive effect on opposing enamel due to their loss against wear, compared to uniform structured zirconia. The resin nanoceramic causes the lowest enamel wear thanks to its flexible nano-ceramic microstructure. While zirconia appears to be an enamel-friendly material in wear volume loss, it can cause microstructural defects of enamel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aimed to quantitate the wear of the highly transparent Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) ceramic monolithic zirconia crown on the enamel in vivo and discuss the prone position of the wear and the underlying mechanism. METHODS A total of 43 patients with 43 posterior teeth were selected for full zirconia crown restoration and examined immediately, at 6 months, and at 1 year after restoration. During the follow-up visit, the fine impression of the patients' monolithic zirconia crowns, the antagonist teeth, the corresponding contralateral natural teeth, the super plaster cast, and epoxy resin model was ontained. The model of epoxy resin was observed under a stereo microscope, and the microstructure parts were observed under a scanning electron microscope. RESULTS After 1 year, the mean depth and volume of wearing of the monolithic zirconia crown were the smallest (all P < 0.01), while those of the antagonist teeth were significantly larger than those of the natural teeth (P < 0.0001), and no significant difference was found among the natural teeth (P = 0.3473, P = 0.6996). The amount of wear after one year was remarkably higher than that at 6 months (P < 0.0001). The microscopic observation revealed the tendency of wearing of the monolithic zirconia crown on the antagonist teeth at the protruding early contact points. Electron micrographs of tooth scars showed that the wearing mechanism of the monolithic zirconia crown on natural teeth was mainly abrasive and fatigue wear. CONCLUSIONS Although the self-wearing is insignificant, the monolithic zirconia crown can cause wear of the antagonist teeth via occlusal or early contact significantly; the amount of wearing is higher than that of natural teeth and increases over time. The wearing mechanism is mainly abrasive and fatigue wear.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ionizing radiation therapy (RT) is the main option for head and neck cancer treatment, but it is associated with multiple side effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of RT associated with chewing simulation on the surface of human enamel and Yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP). METHODS Maxillary premolar cusps and Y-TZP slabs were divided in 7 experimental groups: CO: no RT (control); EZ groups had irradiation applied to both, enamel and zirconia samples (simulating restoration prior to RT); E groups had irradiation applied to enamel only (simulating restoration after RT). RT doses were either 30, 50 or 70 Gray (Gy). Enamel cusps were abraded against zirconia slabs in a chewing simulator (CS - one million cycles/ 80 N/ 60 mm/min, 2 mm horizontal path, artificial saliva, 37˚ C). Zirconia hardness was evaluated before CS; zirconia roughness and enamel volume (wear) were evaluated before and after CS. Hardness and wear data were analyzed by one-way Analysis of Variance and Tukey post hoc test. Roughness was analyzed by Repeated Measures test and Bonferroni test (p=0.05). RESULTS There was no significant effect of enamel or zirconia irradiation on enamel cusp wear (p=0.226), regardless of the irradiation dose used - up to 70 Gy. Irradiation also did not affect Y-TZP surface roughness (p=0.127) and hardness (p=0.964). CONCLUSIONS RT does not promote significant changes to the surface characteristics of zirconia. Irradiated enamel abraded against zirconia does not show higher wear volume when compared to non-irradiated enamel.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the tribological performance of the pair human teeth/robocasted zirconia, with a special focus on the enamel wear mechanisms. Zirconia pieces produced by robocasting (RC) and unidirectional compression (UC) were compared in terms of crystalline structure, density, porosity, hardness and toughness. Chewing simulation tests were performed against human dental cusps. The cusps wear was quantified and the wear mechanisms identified. Although most of the properties of UC and RC samples are similar, differences were observed for surface roughness and porosity. Although the samples did not suffer wear, the antagonist cusps worn in a similar way. In conclusion, robocasting seems a promising technique to produce customized zirconia dental pieces, namely in what concerns the overall tribological behaviour.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of ionizing irradiation on human enamel and zirconia after chewing simulation. METHODS Twenty enamel and twenty translucent Yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) specimens were divided in 4 groups: Co (control) - no irradiation on enamel cusps/opposing zirconia slabs; E70 - irradiated (70 Gray) enamel cusps/opposing irradiated enamel slabs; Z70 - irradiated zirconia cusps/opposing irradiated zirconia slabs; EZ70 - irradiated enamel cusps/opposing irradiated zirconia slabs. Cusps were abraded against slabs in a chewing simulator (CS - one million cycles, 80 N, artificial saliva, 37˚C). Wear and roughness of zirconia and enamel were analyzed using a stylus profilometer. The abraded enamel was analyzed by Electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and zirconia was characterized by nanoindentation and X-ray diffraction. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test were used for analysis of wear, Repeated Measures and Bonferroni test for roughness, and hardness and modulus values were compared using Wilcoxan Mann Whitney rank sum test (overall 5% significance). RESULTS Significantly higher volume loss was presented by cusps in the E70 group (p<0.001). Wear was similar between Co and EZ70 groups. There was no significant effect of irradiation on roughness of enamel or zirconia slabs (p=0.072). Irradiated Y-PSZ slabs had significantly higher hardness and modulus than non-irradiated ones and a 7% increase in m phase content was detected after irradiation. CONCLUSIONS The opposing surface characteristics played a more significant role on enamel wear than did ionizing radiation. However, radiation affects Y-PSZ crystalline composition, hardness and modulus of elasticity.

Abstract
This review focuses on the wear mechanisms of natural and restorative dental materials, presenting a comprehensive description and analysis of the works published in the last two decades on the wear at the interface of occlusal surfaces. Different groups of tribological pairs were considered: tooth-tooth, tooth-restorative material (tooth-ceramic, tooth-resin-based-materials, and tooth-metal), and restorative-restorative materials. The lack of standardization of the wear tests impairs the direct comparison of the obtained results. However, it was possible to infer about the main wear mechanisms observed on the different classes of dental materials. Concerning ceramics, their toughness and surface finishing determines the wear of antagonist tooth. Abrasion revealed to be the main wear mechanisms at occlusal interface. In the case of resin-based composites, the cohesion of the organic matrix and the nature, shape, and amount of filler particles greatly influences the dental wear. The protruding and detachment of the filler particles are the main causes of abrasion of antagonist enamel. Metallic materials induce lower wear on antagonist enamel than the other classes of materials, because of their low hardness and high ductility. Most of the studies revealed plastic deformation and adhesive wear as the main wear mechanisms. Overall, more research in this area is needed for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved at the occlusal surfaces wear. This would be essential for the development of more suitable restoration materials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the wear sustained in the natural antagonist tooth in cases of full-coverage fixed-base prosthetic restorations or monolithic zirconia tooth-supported crowns, as well as to determine the wear in the restoration itself, both in the short- and medium-term and considering the factors that may influence wear. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic literature review and meta-analysis, based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations, of clinical studies that evaluated wear in antagonist teeth in relation to fixed-prosthesis monolithic zirconia crowns. A total of 5 databases were consulted in the literature search: Pubmed-Medline, Cochrane, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science (WOS). After eliminating duplicated articles and applying the inclusion criteria, eight articles were selected for the qualitative analysis and four for the quantitative analysis. RESULTS Mean maximum wear of the antagonist tooth in relation to monolithic zirconia crowns of magnitude 95.45 µm (CI at 95% 79.57-111.33) was observed. By using a meta-regression model (R2 = 0.92) the significant effect of time in maximum wear rate (p < 0.001) was observed, estimated at 6.13 µm per month (CI at 95% 3.99-8.27). Furthermore, monolithic zirconia crowns are subject to a mean maximum wear of 58.47 µm (CI 95% 45.44-71.50). By using a meta-regression model (R2 = 0.53) the significant effect of time in the maximum wear value was observed (p = 0.053), estimated at 3.40 µm per month (CI al 95% -0.05-6.85). CONCLUSIONS Monolithic zirconia crowns lead to a progressive maximum wear of the antagonist tooth over time which is greater than the maximum wear sustained in the crown itself. It is not possible to establish an objective and quantitative objection in relation to natural enamel wear or metal-ceramic crowns.

Abstract
A 62-year-old male patient sought treatment for missing maxillary teeth. A diagnostic cast demonstrated that the interocclusal distance was insufficient. A 5-unit screw-retained implant-supported fixed partial denture (FPD) was used to restore missing maxillary teeth. The restoration of multiple missing teeth using an implant-supported FPD is challenging when the interocclusal distance is limited due to lack of retention and inadequate esthetics. In this case, a hexagonal, screw-retained, and subgingivally located titanium-based zirconia implant-supported FPD with a conical abutment base was used for restoration to overcome the limited interocclusal distance. This implant-supported FPD, consisting of CAD/CAM-designed monolithic zirconia cemented to a titanium bonding base in the laboratory, is expected to facilitate predictable retention and adequate esthetics as well as provide ease of retrieval.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study is to compare wear of the natural teeth against polished yttrium tetragonal zirconia and polished lithium disilicate crowns. Study Setting and Design: Experimental type of study. Materials and Methods: Polished yttrium tetragonal zirconia and polished lithium disilicate crowns were fabricated and given to 15 patients each (n=15). Crowns were fabricated opposing natural tooth. Patients were recalled after 1year and impression were recorded with opposing arch and baseline and final cast were scanned and superimposed using 3 D scanner. Statistical Analysis Used: Data collected by experiments were computerized and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0. The normality of the data was checked using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Shapiro-Wilk tests. The data were normally distributed. Statistical analysis was done by using tools of descriptive statistics such as Mean, and Standard Deviation for representing quantitative data (enamel wear measured in μm) Parametric tests: Student t-test for intergroup comparison was done. Results: No statistical difference were found between wear of opposing enamel for polished yttrium tetragonal and polished lithium disiliacte crowns [p=0.446]. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, it can be concluded that polished lithium disilicate showed better clinical outcome than polished yttrium tetragonal zirconia, though the evaluated data was statistically non significant.

Abstract
Bimaxillary implant-supported restorations for edentulous patients must include a comprehensive diagnosis, treatment plan, and careful selection of the restorative materials. The present clinical report described a completely edentulous patient rehabilitated with a zirconia framework with a facial ceramic veneer on the maxillary arch and a modified polyetheretherketone (PEEK) framework with gingival composite resin and cemented lithium disilicate crowns on the mandibular arch. The rationale for this combination of restorative materials is reviewed.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Additive manufacturing technology can be used for denture bases and also denture teeth. Therefore, the mechanical properties of 3D-printed resin denture teeth should be evaluated. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the wear resistance of 3D-printed denture tooth resin with that of conventionally prefabricated denture teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty substrate specimens were prepared with 5 kinds of resin denture teeth: 3D-printed denture tooth resin (DENTCA denture tooth resin; DENTCA, Inc), Artic 6 (Kulzer GmbH), Preference (Candulor AG), Premium 6 (Kulzer GmbH), and Surpass (GC Corp). The 3D-printed denture tooth specimens were made of methacrylate-based photopolymerized resin by stereolithography 3D printing. Antagonistic surfaces were made from zirconia by milling and from cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy by 3D printing and casting. The specimens were loaded at 49 N for 30 000 cycles under thermocycling conditions in a mastication simulator. Wear resistance was measured by calculating the volume of substance lost. Wear surface characteristics were observed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the data (α=.05). RESULTS The influence of the resin denture teeth and the type of antagonist were both statistically significant. The wear volume loss of the 3D-printed denture tooth resin was higher than that of Artic 6 and Preference when opposing the zirconia and the metal antagonists (P<.05). The 3D-printed denture tooth resin did not show a significant difference from Premium 6 with the zirconia and the metal antagonists or Surpass with the zirconia antagonist. From the SEM images, the specimens of the 3D-printed denture tooth resin showed a relatively smooth surface with the zirconia antagonist and exhibited cracks when opposed by the metal antagonist. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that 3D-printing by using resin materials provides adequate wear resistance for denture tooth use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate two-body wear of three zirconia ceramics stabilized with 3, 4 and 5mol% yttria and to compare their wear behavior with that of a lithium-disilicate glass-ceramic. METHODS Sixteen rectangular-shaped specimens made from three grades of zirconia ceramics and a lithium-disilicate glass-ceramic were polished and dynamically loaded in a chewing simulator (2kg vertical load, 2.1Hz) under water at 90°C for 1.2×106 cycles (about 7 days) in the ball-on-plate mode against steatite antagonists. Surface roughness was measured before and after wear testing. Wear tracks were scanned with a non-contact 3D profilometer and super-impositions were used to determine wear loss of the antagonists. Wear surfaces were imaged by SEM. XRD and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize phase transformation and stress status in the worn and unworn areas of the zirconia ceramics. RESULTS Independent of fracture toughness, strength and aging-susceptibility, the three zirconia ceramics showed a similar and limited amount of wear (∼10μm in depth) and were more wear-resistant than the lithium-disilicate glass-ceramic (∼880μm in depth). Abrasive wear without obvious cracks was observed for all investigated zirconias, whereas the glass-ceramic with a lower fatigue threshold and high susceptibility to surface dissolution exhibited significant abrasion, fatigue and corrosion wear. All three zirconia ceramics yielded a lower antagonist wear than the glass-ceramic and no significant differences were found between the zirconia ceramics. SIGNIFICANCE In the context of this study, high-translucent zirconia ceramics stabilized with a higher yttria content, recently introduced in the dental field, were as wear-resistant and antagonist-friendly as conventional high-strength zirconia and suitable for monolithic restorations.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the wear properties of resin teeth with different opposing dental restorative materials. One type of resin tooth (Trubyte Biotone) was tested against six types of restorative materials including type III gold alloy (GO), monolithic zirconia (MZ), lithium disilicate glass ceramic (LD), nickel-chromium alloy (NC), feldspathic ceramic (FC), and steatite (ST). Two-body wear tests were performed under a vertical load of 5 kgf and thermo-cycling at 5/55 °C with a total of 120,000 cycles. The wear amount was quantified by measuring the volume loss of the resin teeth and the vertical substance loss of the opposing materials using three-dimensional images. The FC group showed a significantly greater amount of wear of the resin teeth, followed by the ST, NC, LD, MZ, and GO groups. The GO group showed significantly less wear of resin teeth than the other groups. There were no statistically significant differences in the wear of opposing restorative materials between groups. Within the limits of this study, it is recommended that zirconia, rather than feldspathic ceramic, should be used for restorations in the esthetic zone, and gold alloy should be used for areas with little or no esthetic demand.

Abstract
With increasing patient expectation for aesthetic dental restorations, there has been a drive towards developing ceramic materials to meet this expectation. Multiple ceramic systems have been introduced over the past four decades with considerable advances in material properties. Survival rates of all-ceramic crowns differ by type of ceramic used, fabrication method and clinical indication. Zirconia and lithium disilicate are the most commonly used contemporary ceramic materials in dentistry. Survival data for these types of restorations appears to be promising; however, there is a lack of high-quality long-term clinical data on the success of these restorations. In the absence of robust longitudinal clinical research, laboratory studies have provided some useful information on the performance of ceramic restorations. Further high quality long-term clinical studies are needed to inform us of modes of failure of these restorations and the range of clinical circumstances in which each type of ceramic restoration may be used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study examined the effects of Na+→K+ ion-exchange on the wear performance of feldspathic veneering porcelain. METHODS Bar and disk specimens were prepared using IPS classic as the feldspathic veneering porcelain. After ion-exchange by immersion of the specimens in melted KNO3 at two temperatures for different time-periods, the bars were tested for flexural strength and Vickers surface hardness. The disks were paired with zirconia antagonists and tested with a pin-on-disk tribometer with 10 N for 70☓104 wear cycles in artificial saliva. Wear analysis of the porcelain and zirconia was performed using 3D profilometer and analysed with one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc pairwise comparison procedures. Worn surfaces were examined with scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS The feldspathic veneering porcelain exhibited strong time-dependent wear behaviour, with typical running-in and steady wear stages. Ion-exchange treatments at 380 °C and 440 °C both enhanced the mechanical properties, decreased the wear rates of running-in wear and steady wear. The wear performance of porcelain treated by ion-exchange at lower temperature (380 °C) was improved significantly, especially reducing the wear rate of the running-in stage. CONCLUSION A thicker ion-exchange layer with less stress relaxation may be obtained by ion-exchange at lower exchange temperature for a long processing time. Such a protocol improves the wear performance of the porcelain effectively. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Restorations with veneering porcelain may fail prematurely due to excessive wear. It important to improve the wear performance of the porcelain. Ion-exchange has the potential to strengthen dental veneering porcelain. Understanding the effect of ion-exchange on the wear performance of porcelain provides insight improving the wear performance of these restorations.

Abstract
Although all-ceramic crowns have excellent biocompatibility and esthetic appearance, chipping may occur. The mechanical properties of monolithic zirconia restorative material are superior to those of all-ceramic restorative materials, and chipping caused by chewing hard foods could be avoided. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of monolithic zirconia crowns for posterior teeth restorations.A total of 46 patients requiring posterior teeth restorations involving 49 teeth were treated with monolithic zirconia crown procedure. The treatment results were evaluated according to the modified California Dental Association criteria immediately after the procedure, and at 2, 24, 48, and 96 weeks after the procedure. The plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, crown marginal integrity, and attrition of the abutment teeth, antagonist teeth, corresponding contralateral teeth, and antagonist of the corresponding contralateral teeth were assessed. The patients were followed for up to 96 weeks.The marginal adaptation results of all 46 patients were evaluated as excellent, resulting in an excellent rate of 100%. Regarding the crown color match, only 3 cases (6.1%) were evaluated as acceptable. Marginal adaptation, anatomic form, crown margin integrity, color match, and gross fracture did not show significant differences compared with the different time points (P = .999). Surface texture at different time did not change significantly (P = .807). During the 96-week follow-up, 1 crack in the antagonist teeth was found in 1 patient. There were no significant differences in wear of the antagonist teeth at different time points (P = .972). The rate of "excellent" evaluation for crown restorations was 93.9% to 100%.The monolithic zirconia crown had no detectable adverse effects on the periodontal tissues, and the antagonist teeth attrition was small. Therefore, it has good potential in the clinical application of posterior teeth restorations in the short term.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to update the knowledge concerning the wear, translucency, as well as clinical performance of monolithic zirconia ceramics, aiming at highlighting their advantages and weaknesses through data presented in recent literature. New ultra-translucent and multicolor monolithic zirconia ceramics present considerably improved aesthetics and translucency, which, according to the literature reviewed, is similar to those of the more translucent lithium disilicate ceramics. A profound advantage is their high strength at thin geometries preserving their mechanical integrity. Based on the reviewed articles, monolithic zirconia ceramics cause minimal wear of antagonists, especially if appropriately polished, although no evidence still exists regarding the ultra-translucent compositions. Concerning the survival of monolithic zirconia restorations, the present review demonstrates the findings of the existing short-term studies, which reveal promising results after evaluating their performance for up to 5 or 7 years. Although a significant increase in translucency has been achieved, new translucent monolithic zirconia ceramics have to be further evaluated both in vitro and in vivo for their long-term potential to preserve their outstanding properties. Due to limited studies evaluating the wear properties of ultra-translucent material, no sound conclusions can be made, whereas well-designed clinical studies are urgently needed to enlighten issues of prognosis and long-term survival.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of occlusal adjustments on the surface roughness of yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) and wear of opposing artificial enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-five Y-TZP slabs from each brand (Lava, 3M and Bruxzir, Glidewell Laboratories) with different surface conditions (Control polished - CPZ; Polished/ground - GRZ; Polished/ground/repolished - RPZ; Glazed - GZ; Porcelain-veneered - PVZ; n=5) were abraded (500,000 cycles, 80 N) against artificial enamel (6 mm diameter steatite). Y-TZP roughness (in µm) before and after chewing simulation (CS) and antagonist steatite volume loss (in mm3) were evaluated using a contact surface profilometer. Y-TZP roughness was analyzed by three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and teatite wear by two-way ANOVA and Tukey Honest Difference (HSD) (P=.05). RESULTS There was no effect of Y-TZP brand on surface roughness (P=.216) and steatite loss (P=.064). A significant interaction effect (P<.001) between surface condition and CS on Y-TZP roughness was observed. GZ specimens showed higher roughness after CS (before CS − 3.7 ± 1.8 µm; after CS − 13.54 ± 3.11 µm), with partial removal of the glaze layer. Indenters abraded against CPZ (0.09 ± 0.03 mm3) were worn more than those abraded against PVZ (0.02 ± 0.01 mm3) and GZ (0.02 ± 0.01 mm3). Higher wear caused by direct abrasion against zirconia was confirmed by SEM. CONCLUSION Polishing with an intraoral polishing system did not reduce the roughness of zirconia. Wear of the opposing artificial enamel was affected by the material on the surface rather than the finishing technique applied, indicating that polished zirconia is more deleterious to artificial enamel than are glazed and porcelain-veneered restorations.

Abstract
Background The introduction of the new generation of particle-filled and high strength ceramics, hybrid composites and technopolymers in the last decade has offered an extensive palette of dental materials broadening the clinical indications in fixed prosthodontics, in the light of minimally invasive dentistry dictates. Moreover, last years have seen a dramatic increase in the patients’ demand for non-metallic materials, sometimes induced by metal-phobia or alleged allergies. Therefore, the attention of scientific research has been progressively focusing on such materials, particularly on lithium disilicate and zirconia, in order to shed light on properties, indications and limitations of the new protagonists of the prosthetic scene. Methods This article is aimed at providing a narrative review regarding the state-of-the-art in the field of these popular ceramic materials, as to their physical-chemical, mechanical and optical properties, as well as to the proper dental applications, by means of scientific literature analysis and with reference to the authors’ clinical experience. Results A huge amount of data, sometimes conflicting, is available today. Both in vitro and in vivo studies pointed out the outstanding peculiarities of lithium disilicate and zirconia: unparalleled optical and esthetic properties, together with high biocompatibility, high mechanical resistance, reduced thickness and favorable wear behavior have been increasingly orientating the clinicians’ choice toward such ceramics. Conclusions The noticeable properties and versatility make lithium disilicate and zirconia materials of choice for modern prosthetic dentistry, requiring high esthetic and mechanical performances combined with a minimal invasive approach, so that the utilization of such metal-free ceramics has become more and more widespread over time.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of various protocols and systems for finishing and polishing monolithic zirconia on surface topography, phase transformation, and bacterial adhesion. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred monolithic zirconia specimens were fabricated and then treated with three finishing and polishing systems (Jota [JO], Meisinger [ME], and Edenta [ED]) using four surface treatment protocols: coarse finishing alone (C); coarse finishing and medium polishing (CM); coarse finishing and fine polishing (CF); and coarse finishing, medium polishing, and fine polishing (CMF). Surface roughness, crystal phase transformation, and bacterial adhesion were evaluated using atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and streptococcal biofilm formation assay, respectively. One-way and two-way analysis of variance with Tukey post hoc tests were used to analyze the results (α=.05). RESULTS In this study, the surface treatment protocols and systems had significant effects on the resulting roughness. The CMF protocol produced the lowest roughness values, followed by CM and CF. Use of the JO system produced the lowest roughness values and the smallest biofilm mass, while the ME system produced the smallest partial transformation ratio. The ED group exhibited the highest roughness values, biofilm mass, and partial transformation ratio. CONCLUSION Stepwise surface treatment of monolithic zirconia, combined with careful polishing system selection, is essential to obtaining optimal microstructural and biological surface results.

Several types of metal-free ceramics have been developed to meet the patients demand for natural looking appearance restorations. Owing to their biocompatibility and good mechanical properties zirconia has been successfully used in recent years as a dental biomaterial. Due to its high opacity zirconia cores are generally covered with ceramic veneers that provide a more natural appearance but have frequent incidence of chipping. As an alternative to veneered zirconia full-contour zirconia restorations become more widely used nowadays. The paper reviews the current knowledge and scientific data of the zirconia use in dentistry in order to compare the zirconia based dental restorations with the metal-ceramic ones and also the two types of dental restoration based on zirconia, veneered or monolithic zirconia.

Abstract
The mechanical properties of crystalline phase of glass ceramics are critical. This study aimed to evaluate wear resistance of different crystalline-reinforced dental chairside computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) glass ceramics. Materials of feldspar (Vita Mark II, VM), leucite (IPS Empress CAD, EC), lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD, EX), lithium disilicate enriched with zirconia (Vita Suprinity, VS), and enamel were embedded, grounded, and polished, respectively. Samples were indented with a Vickers hardness tester to test the fracture resistance (KIC). Two-body wear tests were performed in a reciprocal ball-on-flat configuration under artificial saliva. The parameters of load force (50 N), reciprocating amplitude (500 μm), frequency (2 Hz), and the test cycle (10,000 cycles) were selected. Specimen microstructure, indentation morphology, and wear scars were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscopy, and three-dimensional profile microscopy. EX, VS, and EC demonstrated significantly higher KIC values than the enamel, while ceramic materials showed smaller wear depth results. Cracks, massive delamination, and shallow plow were seen on the enamel worn scar. Long deep plow, delamination, and brittle cracks are more common for VM and EC, and short shallow plow and smooth subsurface are the characteristics of EX and VS. Greater fracture toughness values indicated higher wear resistances of the materials for the test glass ceramics. The CAD/CAM glass ceramics performed greater wear resistance than enamel. Feldspar- and leucite-reinforced glass ceramics illustrated better wear resistance similar to enamel than lithium disilicate glass ceramics, providing amicable matching with the opposite teeth.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to identify the effects of three aesthetic restorative materials on the wear between tooth and restoration by a pin-on-disk manner. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six aesthetic restorative materials were used to prepare disk specimens for wear test, which were Lava Zirconia as zirconia group, Vintage MP and Cerabien ZR as veneering porcelain group, Gradia Direct microhybrid composite containing prepolymerized fillers, Filtek Z250 microhybrid composite containing zirconia glass and colloidal silica particles, and Filtek Z350 nanocomposite as composite resin group. Vertical loss of the worn cusp, change of the surface roughness of the restoration materials, and the surface topography were investigated after wear test under 9.8-N contact load. RESULTS The porcelain groups (Vintage MP and Cerabien ZR) caused the largest vertical loss of teeth when compared with those of the composite resin and zirconia groups, and Filtek Z250 microhybrid composite results in the second-largest vertical loss of teeth. The surface of Filtek Z350 nanocomposite was deeply worn out, but visible wear on the surface of the zirconia and Gradia Direct microhybrid composite was not observed. When the zirconia surface was roughened by sand-blasting, vertical loss of teeth considerably increased when compared with that in the case of fine polished zirconia. CONCLUSION It was identified that microhybrid composite resin containing a prepolymerized filler and zirconia with reduced surface roughness by polishing were the most desirable restorative materials among the tested materials to prevent the two-body wear between aesthetic restorative material and tooth.

Abstract
PURPOSE Surface finishing of a zirconia restoration is essential after clinical adjustment. Herein, we investigated the effects of a surface finishing protocol for monolithic zirconia on final roughness and bacterial adherence. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-eight disk-shaped monolithic zirconia specimens were fabricated and divided into four groups (n = 12) based on initial surface treatment, finishing, and polishing protocols: diamond bur+polishing bur (DP group), diamond bur+stone grinding bur+polishing bur (DSP group), no diamond bur+polishing bur (NP group), and no diamond bur+stone grinding bur+polishing bur (NSP group). Initial and final surface roughness was measured with a profilometer, and shown using scanning electron microscope. Bacterial adhesion was evaluated by quantifying Streptococcus mutans in the biofilm. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare results among groups, and two-way analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effects of grinding burs on final roughness (α=.05). RESULTS The DP group had the highest final Ra value, followed by the DSP, NP, and NSP groups. Use of the stone grinding bur as a coarse-finishing step significantly decreased final Ra values when a diamond bur was used (P<.001). Omission of the stone grinding bur increased biofilm formation on specimen surfaces. Combining a stone grinding bur with silicone polishing burs produced the smallest final biofilm values, regardless of the use of a diamond bur in initial surface treatment. CONCLUSION Coarse finishing of monolithic zirconia with a stone grinding bur significantly decreased final Ra values and bacterial biofilm formation when surfaces had been roughened by a diamond bur.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM An assessment of the evidence for the antagonist enamel wear of tooth-supported monolithic zirconia posterior crowns is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to identify and summarize clinical studies related to the antagonist enamel wear of tooth-supported monolithic zirconia posterior crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library searches were performed and complemented by manual searches from database inception to December 25, 2017, for title and abstract analysis. RESULTS Initially, 198 articles were obtained through database searches. Twenty-one articles were selected for full-text analysis, and 5 studies met the inclusion criteria. Because of the heterogeneity in design, surface treatment, measurement methods, and wear parameters, a meta-analysis was not possible. The selected studies were analyzed regarding the antagonist natural enamel wear of zirconia, measurement methods, and surface treatment. The results of the antagonist enamel wear varied widely, which made comparing them scientifically with absolute values difficult. CONCLUSIONS This review indicated that the antagonist enamel wear of zirconia was similar to or more than that of natural teeth but less than that of metal-ceramics. Additional properly designed, longer follow-up clinical trials with larger sample sizes are needed to evaluate the antagonist enamel wear of monolithic zirconia crowns in vivo.

Abstract
Aim/Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to examine the clinical performance of posterior monolithic single crowns in terms of failure or complications and the secondary aim was to assess the quality of these restorations according to the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Methods: Ιn a private dental clinic, 65 patients with need of posterior crowns were restored with monolithic zirconia crowns. All the restorations were evaluated 6 and 12 months after their cementation. The modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria and periodontal parameters were applied for the clinical evaluation of the crowns. Restorations with Alpha or Bravo rating were considered a success. Results: Descriptive statistics and nonparametric tests were used for statistical analysis. Sixty-five patients (mean age: 49.52) were restored with 65 monolithic zirconia crowns. No fracture of the restorations was recorded. The overall success rate was 98.5%. The clinical quality of all crowns was acceptable except for the marginal discoloration of one crown at the 6- and 12-month follow-up examination. Conclusions: In this study, no fracture of single-tooth monolithic crowns occurred and the success rate was high. Monolithic zirconia restorations fabricated is a viable option for the restoration of single posterior teeth.
