Development of isoniazid electrochemical sensor using nickel ferrite - nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dot nanocomposite as a new electrode modifier

This work reports the synthesis of nickel ferrite decorated nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dot (NF@N, S:GQD) and its use as an electrode modifier. The developed NF@N, S:GQD modified glassy carbon electrode (NF@N, S:GQD/GCE) was applied to assess isoniazid (INZ) concentration based on its oxidation at the surface of the proposed electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used as appropriate electrochemical techniques to study the electrochemical behavior of INZ and determine it. Based on combined evidence from surveys, research, and personal results, it is thought that the combination of nickel ferrite and doped graphene quantum dots can synergistically affect results, leading to increased sensitivity and reduced detection limits. This is probably mainly due to the high electrical conductivity of N, S-GQD structure, the electrocatalytic effect of nickel ferrite, and increased surface area resulting from the nano size of the modifier. The optimum conditions for preparing of the modified electrode and determination of INZ are selected by performing electrochemical experiments. The voltammetric response of the sensor is linear from 0.3 to 40 nM INZ under optimal conditions and the detection limit of the sensor is 0.1 nM. The validity and performance of the prepared sensor were confirmed by determining the amount of INZ in the drug and urine as real samples. The composite of doped nanoparticles and nickel ferrite is an innovative modification material to create electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity that can be used in pharmaceutical applications.

Nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors for detection of amino acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and muscle tissue. They also play a significant role in physiological processes related to energy, recovery, mood, muscle and brain function, fat burning and stimulating growth hormone or insulin secretion. Accurate determination of amino acids in biological fluids is necessary because any changes in their normal ranges in the body warn diseases like kidney disease, liver disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. To date, many methods such as liquid chromatography, fluorescence mass spectrometry, etc. have been used for the determination of amino acids. Compared with the above techniques, electrochemical systems using modified electrodes offer a rapid, accurate, cheap, real-time analytical path through simple operations with high selectivity and sensitivity. Nanomaterials have found many interests to create smart electrochemical sensors in different application fields e.g. biomedical, environmental, and food analysis because of their exceptional properties. This review summarizes recent advances in the development of nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors in 2017-2022 for the detection of amino acids in various matrices such as serum, urine, blood and pharmaceuticals.

Nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors for the detection of natural antioxidants in food and biological samples: research progress

Antioxidants are healthy substances that are beneficial to the human body and exist mainly in natural and synthetic forms. Among many kinds of antioxidants, the natural antioxidants have great applications in many fields such as food chemistry, medical care, and clinical application. In recent years, many efforts have been made for the determination of natural antioxidants. Nano-electrochemical sensors combining electrochemistry and nanotechnology have been widely used in the determination of natural antioxidants due to their unique advantages. Therefore, a large number of nanomaterials such as metal oxide, carbon materials, and conducting polymer have attracted much attention in the field of electrochemical sensors due to their good catalytic effect and stable performance. This review mainly introduces the construction of electrochemical sensors based on different nanomaterials, such as metallic nanomaterials, metal oxide nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, polymer nanomaterials, and other nanocomposites, and their application to the detection of natural antioxidants, including ascorbic acid, phenolic acids, flavonoid, tryptophan, citric acid, and other natural antioxidants. In the end, the limitations of the existing nano-sensing technology, the latest development trend, and the application prospect for various natural antioxidant substances are summarized and analyzed. We expect that this review will be helpful to researchers engaged in electrochemical sensors.

Smartphone-assisted electrochemical sensor for reliable detection of tyrosine in serum

Point-of-care devices have attracted a huge interest by the scientific community because of the valuable potentiality for rapid diagnosis and precision medicine through cost-effective and easy-to-use devices for on-site measurement by unskilled personnel. Herein, we reported a smartphone-assisted electrochemical device consisted of a screen-printed electrode modified with carbon black nanomaterial and a commercially available smartphone potentiostat i.e. EmStat3 Blue, for sensitive detection of tyrosine. Once optimized the conditions, tyrosine was detected in standard solutions by square wave voltammetry, achieving a linear range comprised between 30 and 500 μM, with a detection limit equal to 4.4 μM. To detect tyrosine in serum, the interference of another amino acid i.e. tryptophan was hindered using a sample treatment with an extraction cartridge. The agreement of results analyzing serum samples with HPLC reference method and with the developed smart sensing system demonstrated the suitability of this smartphone-assisted sensing tool for cost-effective and rapid analyses of tyrosine in serum samples.

Electrochemical Amino Acid Sensing: A Review on Challenges and Achievements

The rapid growth of research in electrochemistry in the last decade has resulted in a significant advancement in exploiting electrochemical strategies for assessing biological substances. Among these, amino acids are of utmost interest due to their key role in human health. Indeed, an unbalanced amino acid level is the origin of several metabolic and genetic diseases, which has led to a great need for effective and reliable evaluation methods. This review is an effort to summarize and present both challenges and achievements in electrochemical amino acid sensing from the last decade (from 2010 onwards) to show where limitations and advantages stem from. In this review, we place special emphasis on five well-known electroactive amino acids, namely cysteine, tyrosine, tryptophan, methionine and histidine. The recent research and achievements in this area and significant performance metrics of the proposed electrochemical sensors, including the limit of detection, sensitivity, stability, linear dynamic range(s) and applicability in real sample analysis, are summarized and presented in separate sections. More than 400 recent scientific studies were included in this review to portray a rich set of ideas and exemplify the capabilities of the electrochemical strategies to detect these essential biomolecules at trace and even ultra-trace levels. Finally, we discuss, in the last section, the remaining issues and the opportunities to push the boundaries of our knowledge in amino acid electrochemistry even further.

Electrochemical determination of rutin by using NiFe2O4 nanoparticles-loaded reduced graphene oxide

A binary transition metal oxide containing nickel and iron (NiFe2O4) and hybridization of this nanomaterial with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are synthesized by the hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirm the successful synthesis of these materials. Also, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images illustrated the particle morphology with the particle size of 20 nm. The synthesized material is then examined as a sensor on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode to detect a very small amount of rutin. Some electrochemical tests such as cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and impedance spectroscopy indicate the remarkable accuracy of this sensor and its operation in a relatively wide range of concentrations of rutin (100 nM-100 µM). The accuracy of the proposed electrochemical sensors is approximately 100 nM in 0.1 M PBS, (pH = 3) which is relatively impressive and can be reported. Also, the stability rate after 100 DPV was about 95 %, which is a considerable and relatively excellent value. Considering the very good results, it seems that the NiFe2O4-rGO can be considered as a new proposal in the development of accurate and inexpensive electrochemical sensors.

Developments and applications of nanomaterial-based carbon paste electrodes

This review summarizes the progress that has been made in the past ten years in the field of electrochemical sensing using nanomaterial-based carbon paste electrodes. Following an introduction into the field, a first large section covers sensors for biological species and pharmaceutical compounds (with subsections on sensors for antioxidants, catecholamines and amino acids). The next section covers sensors for environmental pollutants (with subsections on sensors for pesticides and heavy metal ions). Several tables are presented that give an overview on the wealth of methods (differential pulse voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, amperometry, etc.) and different nanomaterials available. A concluding section summarizes the status, addresses future challenges, and gives an outlook on potential trends.

A nano-magnetic electrochemical sensor for the determination of mood disorder related substances

The simultaneous electrochemical detection of mood disorder related substances, such as amitriptyline, melatonin and tryptophan, was successfully achieved by using a novel nano-magnetic electrochemical sensor design, encompassing Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles decorated with carbon quantum dots (MagNPs/Cdots). The magnetic composite was characterized using HR-TEM microscopy, XRD and Raman spectroscopy, and was applied onto a glassy carbon electrode using a miniature neodymium magnet. The determination of amitriptyline, melatonin and tryptophan was performed by monitoring oxidation promoted by MagNPs/Cdots in BR-buffer at pH 3.0, which proceeded according to well-defined differential pulse voltammetry peaks, with detection limits of 5.9, 4.4 and 4.2 nmol L⁻¹, respectively. No significant interference was seen from biological interferents such as uric acid, ascorbic acid, dopamine, estriol and 17β-estradiol. The magnetic hybrid material was highly stable in solution, opening exciting opportunities for the development of low cost and practical electrochemical sensors for the determination of mood disorder related substances in real clinical samples.
