Influence of different growing stages of whole-plant soybeans on their nutrient content and silage quality for cattle

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of growing stage (GS) on morphological and chemical composition of whole-plant soybean (WPS), and fermentative profile and chemical composition of whole-plant soybean silage (SS). This study was divided into two trials conducted in a complete randomised block design. The first trial evaluated the effect of GS from R1 to R8 (59-135 d after sowing) on morphological and chemical composition of WPS and its botanical components. The second trial determined the effects of GS from R3 (71 d after sowing) to R7 (124 d after sowing) on dry matter (DM) losses, fermentative profile, chemical composition and aerobic stability of SS. The proportion of leaves in WPS was reduced, while stem and pod proportions were increased as the GS progressed. Ensiling WPS at R6 and R7 decreased the contents of acetic acid, lactic acid and branched-chain fatty acids, and ethanol, and increased the contents of propionic acid and NH3-N. However, silage butyric acid concentrations in R6 and R7 were relatively high (18.1 and 19.9 g/kg DM, respectively). Butyric acid and buffering capacity varied according to GS with the lowest values observed in silages derived from GS R3, R5 and R7, and the highest values observed in silages made from GS R5. Later GS resulted in greater contents of DM, crude protein and ether extract, and lower contents of acid detergent fibre and non-fibre carbohydrate in SS. The high fat of SS produced from later GS limits high inclusion levels in ruminant diets. Morphological components impacted chemical composition of SS, whereas the R7 stage improved fermentative profile and resulted in an SS with greater in situ degradability of DM and neutral detergent fibre.

Recycling silage leachate and biochar for improving nitrate removal by woodchip bioreactor

Woodchip bioreactor (WBR) is commonly used to remove nitrate from drainage and runoff. However, the efficiency of nitrate removal in WBR is highly variable due to the properties of filling materials. In this study, we investigated the potential of recycling two waste materials, biochar (B) and silage leachate (SL), to enhance nitrate removal by providing a better living habitat and extra available carbon for denitrification. We constructed twelve lab-scale bioreactors with different filling materials (WBR, WBR + B, WBR + SL, WBR + B + SL), hydraulic retention times (HRT: 0.5-24 h), and nitrate concentrations (5.4-33 mg L-1) to test nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) and nitrate removal rate (NRR). Our results showed that the combination of biochar and silage leachate led to the highest NRE and NRR, with improvements of 23% and 48%, respectively, compared to WBR alone. However, the benefits of adding biochar and silage leachate were less apparent at longer HRTs. According to the results of our structural equation modeling (SEM), we have attributed the improved denitrification to several factors. These factors include the decrease in dissolved oxygen, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and pH value, as well as an increase in dissolved organic carbon after the addition of silage leachate. Therefore, our study provides evidence that recycling biochar and silage leachate as an additive to WBR could be a beneficial strategy for enhancing nitrate removal. Overall, this study highlights the potential of a win-win solution to improve the efficiency of nitrate removal in water treatment processes.

Potential for volatile fatty acid production via anaerobically-fermenting rice straw pretreated with silage effluent and phenyllactic acid

To resolve environmental problems associated with rice straw and silage effluent disposal, silage effluent pretreating rice straw for the anaerobic production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was investigated. To prevent the lactic acid bacteria in silage effluent from inhibiting anaerobic fermentation, four phenyllactic acid (PLA) levels were set (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 mg/kg). The total VFA yields of treatments pretreated only with silage effluent (CK) were higher than the groups combined with PLA during 15 days fermentation. Compared to PLA treatments, the total VFA of CK increased by 11.4 % ∼ 25.1 % on day 15. The CK showed higher lactic and propionic acid contents and lower pH values (<4.9). The PLA treatments decreased Lactobacillus abundance while increasing bacterial richness and evenness, and acetic and butyric acid contents. These demonstrated silage effluent has the potential to be used as a biological pretreatment for VFA production in anaerobic fermentation.

Response of fermentation quality and microbial community of oat silage to homofermentative lactic acid bacteria inoculation

Oat (Avena sativa L.) is one of the important forage crops in the world. However, oat grown in Southwest China has higher moisture content and their preservation face significant challenges. In addition, existing commercial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have poor fermentation effects in hot and humid regions. Consequently, the current study investigated the response of oat fermentation quality and microbial community to self-selected LAB inoculation. The treatments were: CK, sterilized water; LP694, Lactobacillus plantarum 694; LR753, Lactobacillus rhamnosus 753; and LPLR, LP694 combined with LR753, followed by 1, 3, 7, 14, and 60 days (d) of fermentation. The results showed that LAB inoculation significantly raised the lactic acid content, and decreased the level of pH value, acetic acid, and ammonia-N in oat silage. The LR753 group had a significantly higher (p < 0.05) lactic acid content (60.95 g kg^-1 DM), and lower pH value (3.95) and ammonia-N content (10.1 g kg^-1 DM) followed by the LPLR group. The LR753 showed lower NDF (54.60% DM) and ADF (39.73% DM) contents than other groups. The Lactobacillus was a prevalent genus in LAB-treated groups, and its relative abundance reached maximum in LP694 (69%) on day 3, while in the LR753 group (72%) on 60 days. The Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus fermentum became the dominant species in LAB-treated groups with fermentation time. The Lactobacillus genus was positively correlated with WSC (R = 0.6, p < 0.05), while negatively correlated with pH (R = -0.5, p < 0.05), and BA (R = -0.5, p < 0.01). Overall, the LR753 group had better fermentation quality and preservation of nutritional components providing theoretical support and guidance for future oat silage production in Southwest China.

Untreated or ammoniated cotton gin trash in the ensiling of elephant grass reduces silage quality

This study examined the inclusion of untreated or urea-ammoniated CGT on the chemical composition, pH, gas, and effluent losses, dry matter recovery (DMR), and aerobic stability of elephantgrass silage. The experiment was laid out in a randomized design with a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement represented by three levels of inclusion of CGT during ensiling (0, 5, or 10%) and three levels of ammoniation of CGT with urea before ensiling (0, 4 or 8% for 28 days), using four replications. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey's test, considering a 5% significance level. The pH and DM, NDIN, ADIN, NDF and ADF contents of the silages increased (p < 0.05) with the inclusion of CGT, regardless of ammoniation. The lowest (p < 0.05) effluent loss was achieved using 10% of CGT ammoniated with 8% urea. In contrast, the elephantgrass silage exhibited the lowest (p < 0.05) gas loss and the greatest (p < 0.05) DMR. The inclusion of CGT compromised the aerobic stability of the silage. Therefore, the inclusion of CGT – either untreated or ammoniated – in the ensiling of elephantgrass is not recommended.

Improving the storage of cover crops by co-ensiling with different waste types: Effect on fermentation and effluent production

Cover crops harvested at a low maturity stage generally have a high moisture content, which may generate energy losses during silage storage via effluent production and undesirable fermentations. This paper investigates the use of different waste types as absorbent co-substrates to be added before ensiling. The relation between the absorbent water holding capacity and silage effluent volume was first studied to find an effective parameter to prevent effluent production. Effluent retention was found to be proportional to the absorbent loading and water holding capacity (r2 = 0.98) and up to 90 % of effluent production was avoided when compared to control (295 l.t-1). The impact of different co-substrates (including bio-waste and manures) on overall ensiling performances was then investigated at an optimized absorbent loading. All co-substrates allowed a total effluent retention while a 76 l.t-1 effluent volume was reported for the control. The silage fermentation was modified or mostly unchanged depending on the co-substrate chemical and microbial properties and different metabolic pathways were observed (e.g. homolactic or butyric fermentation). In most conditions, the methane potential of the crop was efficiently preserved over a storage of 60 days. Co-ensiling was shown to be a relevant silage preparation method for biogas production.

Retention of phosphorus in soils receiving bunker silo effluent

The eutrophication of freshwater systems is a pervasive issue in North America and elsewhere, which has been linked to elevated phosphorus (P) loading from watersheds. Most excess P is thought to originate from non-point agricultural sources, and less attention has been given to small rural point sources, such as bunker silos on livestock farms. Sophisticated management practices are rarely used to attenuate nutrients from bunker silo effluent, leaving simple vegetated buffer strips or riparian zones to protect surface water; however, the efficacy of these systems or larger constructed treatment systems is unclear. This study compared two systems receiving bunker silo effluent, one a natural riparian system with a vegetated buffer strip that is the most common practice and the other a constructed treatment system with a forebay, slag filter, and swale. The study quantified P retention within various subsections of each system and characterized the forms of stored P to infer the potential for remobilization. Results indicate that soils receiving bunker silo effluent represent considerable stores of legacy P in the landscape (750 and 3400 kg ha^-1), the majority of which is stored in labile forms that may be vulnerable to remobilization under the waterlogged conditions that often occur in management practices and riparian zones. Some areas of the systems were able to store considerably more P than others, with the slag filter showing the greatest treatment efficacy. Spatial variability in stored P was apparent, where sections of the systems that directly received effluent retained more P than sections located farther away from bunker silos (indirect inputs). Results indicate that passive treatment systems become P saturated over time, limiting their longterm P removal efficacy. The efficacy of these systems may be improved with the inclusion of sorptive materials as a slag filter within the constructed treatment system significantly increased the life expectancy of that system. Greater understanding of both quantity and forms of P retained in systems and soils receiving bunker silo effluent will help develop management strategies that are more effective and longer-lasting for reducing excess P losses to surface water bodies.

Growth stage and ensiling: impact on chemical composition, conservation quality and in situ ruminal degradability of whole-crop oat

BACKGROUND

The effects of growth stage (GS) and ensiling were assessed on whole-crop oat's (Avena sativa L. cv. Cantara) chemical composition, silage fermentation quality and in situ ruminal degradability. Oat was harvested and ensiled at six GS: boot, heading, water ripe, early milk, early dough and grain ripe (144, 151, 178, 234, 362 and 512 g kg^-1 of dry matter (DM) of whole-crop forage, respectively).

RESULTS

GS influenced chemical composition, silage fermentation quality and ruminal degradability of whole-crop oat. Lower DM and higher water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) contents lead to adequate forage compaction and fermentation at early GS; however, effluent was produced until the dough stage (L and Q; P ≤ 0.003). Advancing in maturity increased (P < 0.001) crop yield (4.5 to 9.4 t DM ha^-1 ), DM (144 to 512 g kg^-1 ), neutral detergent fibre (NDF; 537 to 571 g kg^-1 DM), lignin (44.6 to 71.3 g kg^-1 DM) and starch contents (26.4 to 201 g kg^-1 DM), and reduced (P < 0.001) crude protein (107 to 60 g kg^-1 DM) and WSC (115 to 17.5 g kg^-1 DM). DM and NDF ruminal degradability declined with maturity for fresh and ensiled forages (L and Q; P < 0.05). Density and buffering capacity decreased with GS (L and Q; P < 0.001), whereas pH and soluble protein increased (L and Q; P ≤ 0.004).

CONCLUSION

The growth stage of oat influenced the nutritive value and ruminal degradation to a greater extent than ensiling, and thus it can play a paramount role in whole-crop oat silage quality. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

The Effect of Early and Delayed Harvest on Dynamics of Fermentation Profile, Chemical Composition, and Bacterial Community of King Grass Silage

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of harvesting time on the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition, and microbial community of king grass silage. King grass was harvested at three growth periods of 90 days (KN90S), 110 days (KN110S), and 130 days (KN130S); chopped into 2-3-cm particle size; and ensiled in polyethylene bags (20 × 30 cm). The fermentation quality and chemical composition of silages were analyzed after 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days of ensiling. Bacterial community of silage ensiled for 60 days was profiled using next generation sequencing (NGS) technology. The KN110S showed the most extensive lactic acid (LA) fermentation during 7 days of fermentation compared to KN90S and KN130S. After 60 days of fermentation, the KN110S showed the lowest pH and the highest lactic acid content among the three treatments. The butyric acid and ammonia nitrogen contents of KN90S and KN130S were significantly greater than those of KN110S (p < 0.05). After a timespan of 60 days of ensiling, the bacterial community of king grass silage was predominantly populated by Proteobacteria in phylum level, whereas unclassified Enterobacteriaceae genus remained dominant in all silages. A higher relative abundance of Clostridium was observed in KN90S and KN130S, but not in KN110S, and greater abundance of Lactococcus appeared in KN110S and KN130S silages than KN90S. It is concluded that harvesting time had an important effect on the fermentation quality and microbial community of king grass silage.

Applying the nutrient transfer continuum framework to phosphorus and nitrogen losses from livestock farmyards to watercourses

Farmyards are commonly conceptualized as point sources of nutrient pollution nested within the wider agricultural landscape. However, within farmyards there are individual sources and delivery pathways, each of which is affected by a range of management practices and infrastructure. Rainfall mobilizes these nutrients, which may then be delivered to a receptor or to the wider drainage network. As such, the nutrient transfer continuum (NTC), which has been established as a framework to understand and mitigate nutrient loss at a landscape scale, can be similarly applied to disentangle the stages of nutrient transfer from farmyards. The NTC differentiates nutrient transfer into source, mobilization, delivery, and impact stages. This differentiation allows targeting of mitigation measures and evaluation of costs and benefits. This review paper applies the NTC template to farmyard nitrogen and phosphorus transport to conceptualize causative factors and to identify mitigation options.

Soybean hulls inclusion on silage of wet brewery waste

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of soybean hulls inclusion in the silage of wet brewery waste. The experimental design was randomized in block, where the treatments were constituted by four levels of soybean hulls on the silage (0, 15, 25, and 35%), with three (silos) replicates per treatment. All data collected were subjected to ANOVA and subsequent polynomial regression at 5%. Soybean hulls inclusion caused a linear increase (p < 0.05) in the pH, dry matter, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber and total carbohydrates content of the silage. This inclusion also caused a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the effluent losses and percentages of crude protein, fats, hemicellulose, non-fibrous carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients. Thus, it was concluded that soybean hulls can be used as an additive in the silage of wet brewery waste. Up to 35% of inclusion, there was a significant reduction in the effluent losses, a little increase on pH and enrichment of nutritional content, especially in the dry matter.

Degradation kinetics and COD fractioning of agricultural wastewaters from biogas plants applying biofilm respirometry

Stormwater runoff from agricultural silo facilities can be heavily polluted and needs to be treated before discharged. This study investigates biological treatability and kinetic constants of characteristic silo runoffs, applying attached growth systems. For this, respirometry measurements, typically applied in the activated sludge systems (ASM) as a suspended growth, were modified by using adapted biofilm carriers. This allows a determination of degradation kinetic of the biofilm system and a COD fractioning at the same time, which are fundamental values for the design of a full-scale plant. The developed respirometry method was compared with the state-of-the-art method using suspended growth systems and domestic wastewater. Results are comparable with the parameter of the ASM. As stormwater runoff is usually a mixture from different pollution sources, various, typically occurring substrates are investigated regarding degradation kinetics and COD fractions. Wastewater polluted with digestion residue and solid manure showed similar COD fractions as domestic wastewater with an inert fraction Si of 5-6% and a comparatively low rapidly degradable fraction SS of 21-27%. However, wastewater from corn or whole crop silage showed significant better degradation efficiencies and kinetics with an Si of 2-3% and a rapidly degradable fraction of 56-57%. As COD concentrations up to 5000 mg L^-1 for stormwater runoff and up to 60,000 mg L^-1 for silage effluent can be expected, the results not only show the necessity but also prove the feasibility of biological treatment of stormwater runoff from silo works and provide design parameters for adapted treatment systems.

Evaluation of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal from a Denitrifying Woodchip Bioreactor Treatment System Receiving Silage Bunker Runoff

Leachate and storm-driven runoff from silage storage bunkers can degrade receiving water bodies if left untreated. This study evaluated a novel treatment system consisting of three treatment tanks with a moving-bed biofilm reactor and paired side-by-side denitrifying woodchip bioreactors for the ability to reduce influent nutrient mass loads. Flow-based samples were taken at four locations throughout the system, at the inflow to the first tank, outflow from the tanks prior to entering the woodchip bioreactors, and from the outflows of both bioreactors. Samples were analyzed for concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) species. Inflow concentrations were reduced from the bioreactor outflows by an average of 35% for total N (TN) and 16% for total P (TP) concentrations on a storm event basis. The treatment system cumulatively removed 76% of the TN mass load, 71% of the nitrite + nitrate-N (NO2−+NO3−-N) load, 26% of the TP mass load, and 19% of the soluble reactive P load, but was a source of ammonium-N, based on the monitoring of 16 storm events throughout 2019. While the system was effective, very low NO2−+NO3−-N concentrations in the silage bunker runoff entered the bioreactors, which may have inhibited denitrification performance.

Macauba palm cake as additive in elephant grass silage

The aim of this study was to evaluate the addition of macauba palm cake (Acrocomia aculeata) on the chemical composition, fermentation and aerobic stability of elephant grass silages (Pennisetum purpureum). The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with four replicates. The treatments were composed of six levels of macauba palm cake (0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30%) as additive to elephant grass silage. Dry matter and ethereal extract content of the silage increased linearly with the inclusion of the additive. Addition levels of 15.54% would provide 35% of dry mass, and the limit of 7.00% of ethereal extract in the silage could be obtained with 10.47%. The neutral detergent fiber content reduced linearly from 68.97 to 52.59%, but lignin increased linearly from 6.56 to 7.70%. There was a reduction of 0.17% in the ammoniacal nitrogen content for each 1% of cake. The minimum value of dry matter losses (1.33%) was estimated to the inclusion level of 23.70%. The aerobic stability increased with inclusions between 18 and 24% of cake. The use of levels between 10 and 15% of macauba palm cake are sufficient to optimize dry matter and ethereal extract contents of the silages and to provide a high aerobic stability with minimum losses.

The changing nature of dairy production in Victoria, Australia: are we ready to handle the planning and development of large, intensive dairy operations?

Around the world, dairy production continues to intensify, with farmers increasing stocking rates, feeding more supplements, and transitioning into fully housed systems. Dairy production in Victoria is no exception and farmers are starting a move towards intensive (i.e. permanently housed) dairy operations. Challenges associated with these transformations have included difficulties, or failure, to obtain planning approval and public concern around the effect of intensive developments on environmental degradation, animal welfare and industry image. We examined current land-use planning provisions, environmental requirements, animal-welfare regulations, industry guidelines and codes of practice for their applicability and suitability to the implementation of intensive dairy-production operations, particularly large-scale ones, in Victoria, Australia. Our aim was to clearly identify factors that have the potential to hinder the growth and expansion of existing dairy-production systems into intensive operations, and the establishment of new intensive dairy enterprises. The majority of legislation examined posed no obstacles to the development of large-scale intensive dairy operations. New definitions for intensive livestock production and the inclusion of an intensive dairy-farm category in the State planning provisions will reduce current confusion across and within planning departments. A standard methodology to determine separation distances is required and a code for intensive dairy farming would greatly assist with the planning-approval process. Many advisory publications fall short when applied to intensive dairy operations as they are currently written for pasture-based farms with limited infrastructure for regularly feeding or housing large herds of &gt;700 cows.

Treatment of horizontal silage bunker runoff using biochar amended vegetative filter strips

Horizontal silage bunkers produce leachate that contains contaminants that can be detrimental to the environment if released untreated. Vegetated filter strips are used to treat silage bunker runoff to prevent contamination of surface waters via infiltration, however increased infiltration poses risks to groundwater, particularly for nitrate (NO₃^-). Vegetated filter strip plots with a sandy loam soil, half of which are amended with biochar, were investigated to assess the treatment of silage bunker runoff over 20 application events. The subsurface effluent biological oxygen demand (BOD₅), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total phosphorus (TP) were reduced on average by 40%, 46%, and 75%, respectively, and there was no statistical difference between treatments. The total nitrogen (TN) was reduced by 49 and 64% for control and biochar plots, respectively, which was significantly different between treatments. Biochar significantly reduced nitrate nitrogen (NO₃^--N) leaching by 40% compared to the control, however, the NO₃^--N concentration in leachate was still high ranging from 0.19 to 191.04 mg NO₃^--N L^-1 and 0.18-108.89 mg NO₃^--N L^-1 for control and biochar plots, respectively. A mass balance suggests the primary mechanism for a decrease in TN and NO₃^--N leaching from biochar amended plots was greater retention of NO₃^--N and organic N (ORG-N) within the soil/biochar matrix. The development of oxygenated functional groups and/or formation of organomineral layer on the biochar surface likely enhanced N retention.

Co-ensiling garlic stalk with citrus pulp improves the fermentation quality and feed-nutritional value

Objective

Ensiling is a simple and effective method for long-term preservation; however, less information exists about the ensilability characteristics of garlic stalk (GS). Therefore, the objectives were to examine the ensiling feasibility of GS.

Methods

The GS was ensiled alone or inoculated with Lactobacillus plantarum KU5 in the presence or absence of 5% molasses and ensiled for 7, 14, and 28 d. As an alternative storage method, GS was co-ensiled with wet citrus pulp (CP) at different proportions (GS:CP: 70:30, 60:40, 50:50, and 40:60). Analysis was made on physicochemical, fermentative, and nutritional parameters.

Results

The GS was found to be a biomass which is difficult to ensile. A combination of microbial inoculant and molasses was successful in the improvement of the silage fermentation quality of GS. Co-ensiling of GS with wet CP at the mixing ratio of 50:50 provided the most desirable silage fermentation parameters, including the substantial lactic acid formation, low final pH, minor effluent loss, and the more favorable organoleptic properties.

Conclusion

Co-ensiling GS with CP appears to be a simple and viable method of conservation, enabling the more efficient utilization of these by-product resources over a prolonged period.

The problem of agricultural 'diffuse' pollution: Getting to the point

Despite introduction of legislation such as the EU Nitrates and Water Framework Directives (Directives 91/676/EEC and 2000/60/EC respectively), agricultural practices are often still regarded as a major factor in poor water quality across many EU member states. Elevated inputs of nutrients, organic matter and agro-chemicals to receiving waters from agricultural lands in particular are now widely recognised as potentially major causes of deteriorating water quality. Such inputs may emanate from diffuse sources such as agricultural fields, and small point- or intermediate-sources, including farmyards and farm trackways. However, while inputs from these latter intermediate sources may be substantial, their overall contribution to catchment-wide water quality at high temporal or spatial resolution is still largely unknown. In this study, we surveyed water chemistry throughout the multiple natural and artificial watercourses within a single drainage network at high spatial resolution in a predominantly dairy farming area in Southern Ireland. We found that most headwaters at the time of study were impacted by organic inputs via drainage ditches emanating from the vicinity of farmyards. These farmyard drains were found to have elevated concentrations of ammonium, phosphorus, potassium, suspended sediment and biochemical oxygen demand above background levels in the study catchment. Concomitant assessment of macro-invertebrate communities at study sites indicated that the ecological quality of headwaters was also impaired by these inputs. The individual and aggregate contributions of farmyard drains to water quality within a single catchment, when mapped at high spatial resolution, indicates that they constitute a major contribution to catchment scale 'diffuse' agricultural inputs. However, our data also suggest that engineering farmyard drains to maximise their retention and attenuation function may prove to be a cost-effective means of mitigating the effects of point source farmyard inputs.

Long-term anaerobic conservation of fruit and vegetable discards without or with moisture adjustment after aerobic preservation with sodium metabisulfite

The high moisture and soluble carbohydrates contents of fruit and vegetable discards accelerate putrefaction; thus, the immediate use of preservatives is necessary to prevent their decay and allow further use. Two series of experiments were performed to evaluate the conservation stability of fruit and vegetable discards through ensiling. Fruit and vegetable discards were not treated or treated with 6 g sodium metabisulfite/kg fruit and vegetable discards and aerobically challenged for 7 days. In Experiment 1, sodium metabisulfite-treated fruit and vegetable discards were ensiled alone as high-moisture biomass. Silage fermentation was not effective in preventing the deterioration and mold control, which resulted in the rapid depletion of sugars and dry matter loss in control silage (without sodium metabisulfite). Conversely, the low number of undesirable microorganisms resulted in the negligible loss of nutrients in the sodium metabisulfite-treated silage. In Experiment 2, sodium metabisulfite-treated fruit and vegetable discards were co-ensiled with dry by-product feeds at varying proportions to provide sodium metabisulfite loads of 1.6, 2.4, 3.2, and 4 g/kg biomass. Based on microbiological, nutrient composition, and organoleptic evaluations, the sodium metabisulfite load of 3.2 g/kg biomass provided the most desirable conservation parameters. This study provides a clean route to the safe utilization of the discards for a prolonged period, with negligible dry matter and nutrient loss.

Dynamic bacterial and fungal microbiomes during sweet sorghum ensiling impact bioethanol production

Significant low-cost biofuel production volumes could be achieved from commercial-scale silage by redirecting lactic acid fermentation to ethanol production. A temporal metagenomic analysis on ensiled sweet sorghum inoculated with an ethanologenic yeast has been conducted to understand the underlying microbial processes during bioethanol production. Individual silage buckets approximating silage piles were prepared with freshly harvested material and supplemented with ethanologenic yeast, sulfuric acid or both. The ensiling progress was assessed using high performance liquid chromatography, microbial taxonomic identification and abundance. The combined treatment with Saccharomyces and acid led to a steady reduction of bacterial abundance and microbial diversity with Lactobacillus becoming the dominant genus during the late timepoints. Furthermore, the addition of acid to inhibit bacterial growth hindered Saccharomyces ability to compete with native yeasts like Candida. Knowledge of the response of the in-situ microbial community to the various treatments during ensiling will help improve current methodologies for bioethanol production.

A Fatal Case of Gas Intoxication in Silage Pit

Fatalities due to gas intoxication are rare in routine forensic casework. The most common gas is carbon monoxide, with other gases (ammonia, methane, propane and butane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide) encountered only very rarely. In this report, we describe the accidental death of two maintenance workers who were found in the silage pit at a biogas plant. The autopsy revealed signs of asphyxia in both the deceased. Analysis of the gaseous mixtures in the tank using an infrared gas analyzer showed slightly elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide. Toxicological examination of the blood of both the deceased using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector, spectrophotometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry did not detect any toxicologically significant substance that would explain the sudden collapse. Both the autopsy and the toxicology analyses suggest CO₂ intoxication as the most likely cause for the collapse of the two men, which then led to sudden asphyxia.

Elephant grass silages with or without wilting, with cassava meal in silage production

SUMMARY The experiment was developed to evaluate the effects of wilting and inclusion of cassava meal level on nutritive value, fermentative characteristics and losses of elephant grass silage. The 4 x 2 factorial scheme was adopted, with four repetitions, in a completely randomized design. The factors evaluated were wilting (without and with) and cassava meal level (0; 7.5; 15 and 22.5% of natural matter, DN). PVC silos with 50 cm height and 10 cm diameter were used for silages production, which were opened after 60 days. The wilting and cassava meal addition had increasing linear effect on DM content. Silages with cassava meal showed reduction of total nitrogen, ether extract, acid detergent insoluble nitrogen, neutral detergent fiber ash and protein free, acid detergent fiber, celluloses, hemicelluloses and lignin contents and increase of organic matter content, DM in vitro digestibility and total digestible nutrients. Relative to variables inherent to silages’ fermentative characteristics, pH presented quadratic behavior. Concerning to ammonia nitrogen, it was observed quadratic and decreasing linear behavior for silages without and with wilting, respectively. Wilting and cassava meal inclusion provided smaller effluent losses.
