Effect of sewage sludge derived compost or biochar amendment on the phytoaccumulation of potentially toxic elements and radionuclides by Chinese cabbage

Combined biochar and wheat-derived endophytic bacteria reduces cadmium uptake in wheat grains in a metal-polluted soil

In this study, two wheat-derived cadmium (Cd)-immobilizing endophytic Pseudomonas paralactis M14 and Priestia megaterium R27 were evaluated for their effects on wheat tissue Cd uptake under hydroponic conditions. Then, the impacts of the biochar (BC), M14+R27 (MR), and BC+MR treatments on wheat Cd uptake and the mechanisms involved were investigated at the jointing, heading, and mature stages of wheat plants under field-plot conditions. A hydroponic experiment showed that the MR treatment significantly decreased the above-ground tissue Cd content compared with the M14 or R27 treatment. The BC+MR treatment reduced the grain Cd content by 51.5%-67.7% and Cd translocation factor at the mature stage of wheat plants and increased the organic matter-bound Cd content by 31%-75% in the rhizosphere soils compared with the BC or MR treatment. Compared with the BC or MR treatment, the relative abundances of the biomarkers associated with Gemmatimonas, Altererythrobacter, Gammaproteobacteria, Xanthomonadaceae, Phenylobacterium, and Nocardioides in the BC+MR-treated rhizosphere microbiome decreased and negatively correlated with the organic matter-bound Cd contents. In the BC+MR-treated root interior microbiome, the relative abundance of the biomarker belonging to Exiguobacterium increased and negatively correlated with the Cd translocation factor, while the relative abundance of the biomarker belonging to Pseudonocardiaceae decreased and positively correlated with the Cd translocation factor. Our findings suggested that the BC+MR treatment reduced Cd availability and Cd transfer through affecting the abundances of these specific biomarkers in the rhizosphere soil and root interior microbiomes, leading to decreased wheat grain Cd uptake in the contaminated soil.

Recent progress on emerging technologies for trace elements-contaminated soil remediation

Abiotic stresses from potentially toxic elements (PTEs) have devastating impacts on health and survival of all living organisms, including humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. Moreover, because of the rapid growing industrial activities together with the natural processes, soil contamination with PTEs has pronounced, which required an emergent intervention. In fact, several chemical and physical techniques have been employed to overcome the negative impacts of PTEs. However, these techniques have numerous drawback and their acceptance are usually poor as they are high cost, usually ineffectiveness and take longer time. In this context, bioremediation has emerged as a promising approach for reclaiming PTEs-contaminated soils through biological process using bacteria, fungus and plants solely or in combination. Here, we comprehensively reviews and critically discusses the processes by which microorganisms and hyperaccumulator plants extract, volatilize, stabilize or detoxify PTEs in soils. We also established a multi-technology repair strategy through the combination of different strategies, such as the application of biochar, compost, animal minure and stabilized digestate for stimulation of PTE remediation by hyperaccumulators plants species. The possible use of remote sensing of soil in conjunction with geographic information system (GIS) integration for improving soil bio-remediation of PTEs was discussed. By synergistically combining these innovative strategies, the present review will open very novel way for cleaning up PTEs-contaminated soils.

Effect of iron-loaded sludge biochar amendments on phytoremediation potential of Cr-contaminated soils by Leersia hexandra swartz

In this study, the effect of iron-loaded sludge biochar (ISBC) with different amendment dosages (mass ratio of biochar to soil equal to 0, 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05) on the phytoremediation potential of Leersia hexandra swartz (L. hexandra) to Cr-contaminated soil was investigated. With increasing ISBC dosage from 0 to 0.05, plant height, aerial tissue biomass and root biomass increased from 15.70 cm, 0.152 g pot-1 and 0.058 g pot-1 to 24.33 cm, 0.304 g pot-1 and 0.125 g pot-1, respectively. Simultaneously, the Cr contents in aerial tissues and roots increased from 1039.68 mg kg-1 to 2427.87 mg kg-1 to 1526.57 mg kg-1 and 3242.62 mg kg-1, respectively. Thus, the corresponding bioenrichment factor (BCF), bioaccumulation factor (BAF), total phytoextraction (TPE) and translocation factor (TF) values were also increased from 10.52, 6.20, 0.158 mg pot-1 (aerial tissue)/0.140 mg pot-1 (roots) and 0.428 to 15.15, 9.42, 0.464 mg pot-1 (aerial tissue)/0.405 mg pot-1 (roots) and 0.471, respectively. The significant positive effect of ISBC amendment was primarily attributed to the following three aspects: 1) the root resistance index (RRI), tolerance index (TI) and growth toxicity index (GTI) of L. hexandra to Cr were increased from 100%, 100% and 0%-216.88%, 155.02% and 42.18%, respectively; 2) the bio-available Cr content in the soil was decreased from 1.89 mg L-1 to 1.48 mg L-1, while the corresponding TU (toxicity units) value was declined from 0.303 to 0.217; 3) the activities of urease, sucrase and alkaline phosphatase in soil were increased from 0.186 mg g-1, 1.40 mg g-1 and 0.156 mg g-1 to 0.242 mg g-1, 1.86 mg g-1 and 0.287 mg g-1, respectively. In summary, ISBC amendment was able to significantly improve the phytoremediation of Cr-contaminated soils by L. hexandra.

Effect of olive-processing technology on the utilization of olive mill pomace as a soil amendment

In the Mediterranean basin, the treatment and disposal of olive mill pomace (OMP) remain a salient environmental issue for the olive oil-producing industry. This study assesses the effects of olive-processing technology (three-phase and two-phase systems) on the potential use of OMP as a soil amendment. Samples from 12 Croatian olive mills were analyzed for their total phenolic content (TPC), residual oil fraction, and elemental concentration. The samples were profiled using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and structurally characterized using scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Compared to three-phase samples, two-phase OMP was more acidic (pH 4.5 vs. 5.0), with a higher TPC (3835 vs. 1576 mg/kg fresh weight), oil content (11.7% vs. 7.5% d.w., where d.w. is dry weight), electrical conductivity (EC, 5.1 vs. 3.0 mS/cm), and levels of calcium (Ca, 1.34 vs. 1.20 g/kg d.w.) and copper (Cu, 10.4 vs. 7.0 mg/kg d.w.). Similar values of carbon/nitrogen (C/N; 61 vs. 72), N (10 vs. 8.1 g/kg d.w.), phosphorus (1040 vs. 691 mg/kg d.w.), and potassium (K, 13.7 vs. 8.1 g/kg d.w.) were observed. The amounts of chromium, copper, nickel, and zinc were below EC limits in both cases. The EDS mapping revealed that Ca was concentrated at sharp-edged OMP particles while K was evenly distributed, suggesting that pelletized OMP compost is preferable for amending soil to obtain a homogeneous distribution of nutrients. It was also possible to distinguish between OMPs based on oil and lignin absorption bands in their FT-IR spectra. According to the obtained results, composting is recommended for both types of OMP to produce a safe product for amendment purposes.

Removal of 241Am from Aqueous Solutions by Adsorption on Sponge Gourd Biochar

Luffa cylindrica biomass was converted to biochar and the removal of 241Am by pristine and oxidized biochar fibers was investigated in laboratory and environmental water samples. This species has the added advantage of a unique microsponge structure that is beneficial for the production of porous adsorbents. The main purpose of this study was to valorize this biomass to produce an efficient adsorbent and investigate its performance in radionuclide-contaminated waters. Following the preparation of Am3+ solutions at a concentration of 10−12 mol/L, the adsorption efficiency (Kd) was determined as a function of pH, adsorbent mass, ionic strength, temperature, and type of aqueous solution by batch experiments. At the optimum adsorbent dose of 0.1 g and pH value of 4, a log10Kd value of 4.2 was achieved by the oxidized biochar sample. The effect of temperature and ionic strength indicated that adsorption is an endothermic and entropy-driven process (ΔH° = −512 kJ mol−1 and ΔS° = −1.2 J K−1 mol−1) leading to the formation of inner-sphere complexes. The adsorption kinetics were relatively slow (24 h equilibrium time) due to the slow diffusion of the radionuclide to the biochar surface and fitted well to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Oxidized biochar performed better compared to the unmodified sample and overall appears to be an efficient adsorbent for the treatment of 241Am-contaminated waters, even at ultra-trace concentrations.

Influence of sewage sludge stabilization method on microbial community and the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes

Municipal sewage sludge (MSS) and other biosolids are of high interest for agriculture. These nutrient-rich organic materials can potentially serve as organic fertilizers. Besides an increase of organic matter in soil, other positive effects were shown after their application. Especially the positive influence on circular economy increased the attention paid to management of MSS in recent years. Unfortunately, the use of sewage sludge has some drawbacks. Biosolids are frequently polluted with heavy metals, xenobiotic organic compounds and industrial chemicals, which may be hazardous for the environment and humans. Here, we investigated the influence of stabilization method and the size of wastewater treatment plant on the structure of microbial communities as well as the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) and mobile genetic elements (MGE). All tested ARG and MGE were detectable in almost all of the samples. Interestingly, the presence of MGE as well as particular heavy metals correlated positively with the presence of several ARG. We conclude that the distribution of ARG and MGE in biosolids originated from municipal wastewater treatment plants, cannot be explained by the size of the facility or the applied stabilization method. Moreover, we postulate that the presence of pollutants and long-term impacts should be assessed prior to a possible use of sewage sludge as fertilizer.

Feasibility of Biochar Derived from Sewage Sludge to Promote Sustainable Agriculture and Mitigate GHG Emissions-A Review

Sewage sludge (SS) has been connected to a variety of global environmental problems. Assessing the risk of various disposal techniques can be quite useful in recommending appropriate management. The preparation of sewage sludge biochar (SSB) and its impacts on soil characteristics, plant health, nutrient leaching, and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) are critically reviewed in this study. Comparing the features of SSB obtained at various pyrolysis temperatures revealed changes in its elemental content. Lower hydrogen/carbon ratios in SSB generated at higher pyrolysis temperatures point to the existence of more aromatic carbon molecules. Additionally, the preparation of SSB has an increased ash content, a lower yield, and a higher surface area as a result of the rise in pyrolysis temperature. The worldwide potential of SS output and CO₂-equivalent emissions in 2050 were predicted as factors of global population and common disposal management in order to create a futuristic strategy and cope with the quantity of abundant global SS. According to estimations, the worldwide SS output and associated CO₂-eq emissions were around 115 million tons dry solid (Mt DS) and 14,139 teragrams (Tg), respectively, in 2020. This quantity will rise to about 138 Mt DS sewage sludge and 16985 Tg CO₂-eq emissions in 2050, a 20% increase. In this regard, developing and populous countries may support economic growth by utilizing low-cost methods for producing biochar and employing it in local agriculture. To completely comprehend the benefits and drawbacks of SSB as a soil supplement, further study on long-term field applications of SSB is required.

New trends on green energy and environmental technologies, with special focus on biomass valorization, water and waste recycling: editorial of the special issue

In this editorial piece, the Editors of the Virtual Special Issue (VSI) "New Trends on Green Energy and Environmental Technologies, with Special Focus on Biomass Valorization, Water and Waste Recycling", present summarized data corresponding to the accepted submissions, as well as additional comments regarding the thematic of the VSI. Overall, 83 manuscripts were received, with final publication of those having the highest quality, accepted after peer-reviewing. The Editors think that the result is a set of very interesting papers that increase the knowledge on the matter, and which would be useful for researchers and the whole society.

Effects of Cu and Zn contamination on chicken manure-based bioponics: Nitrogen recovery, bioaccumulation, microbial community, and health risk assessment

In bioponics, although chicken manure is an efficient substrate for vegetable production and nitrogen recovery, it is often contaminated with high Cu and Zn levels, which could potentially cause bioaccumulation in plants and pose health risks. The objectives of this study were to assess nitrogen recovery in lettuce- and pak choi-based bioponics with Cu (50-150 mg/kg) and Zn (200-600 mg/kg) supplementation, as well as their bioaccumulation in plants, root microbial community, and health risk assessment. The supplementation of Cu and Zn did not affect nitrogen concentrations and plant growth (p > 0.05) but reduced nitrogen use efficiency. Pak choi showed higher Cu and Zn bioconcentration factors than lettuce. Bacterial genera Ruminiclostridium and WD2101_soil_group in lettuce roots and Mesorhizobium in pak choi roots from Cu and Zn supplemented conditions were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than controls, suggesting microbial biomarkers in plant roots from Cu and Zn exposure bioponics depended on plant type. Health risk assessment herein revealed that consumption of bioponic vegetables with Cu and Zn contamination does not pose long-term health risks (hazard index <1) to children or adults, according to the US EPA. This study suggested that vegetable produced from chicken manure-based bioponics has low health risk in terms of Cu and Zn bioaccumulation and could be applied in commercial-scale system for nutrient recovery from organic waste to vegetable production; however, health risk from other heavy metals and xenobiotic compounds must be addressed.

Evaluation of Land Potential for Use of Biosolids in the Coastal Mediterranean Karst Region

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of agricultural land in the coastal Adriatic Karst region (Šibenik region, Croatia) for biosolids application by integrating spatial data from different sources: digital maps and remote sensing, parcel identification system, GIS field observations and measurements focusing on specific land and soil properties. Due to the rapid development of the wastewater treatment industry, excessive accumulation of sewage sludge (SS) in wastewater treatment plants is a growing problem worldwide. Management options for land application of biosolids require a comprehensive characterization of both SS and SS-amended soils. The assessment of agricultural land in the study area for SS disposal was based on EU and national legislation. The evaluation revealed that agricultural land in the study area accounts for only 10% of the total area (25,736 ha), but only a quarter of the existing land (6065 ha) is suitable for biosolids application. Furthermore, the data indicate that the sewage sludge can be safely applied to the soil in terms of soil metals according to the Croatian legislation. The short-term potential of the soil to sustain this ecosystem service, namely soil improvement with biosolids, should be used to determine the inherent long-term potential based on resistance to soil degradation and resilience. However, caution is needed and the long-term effects should be investigated before biosolids are continuously used for soil application.
