A meta-analysis of heavy metals pollution in farmland and urban soils in China over the past 20 years

Synthesis of ternary geopolymers using prediction for effective solidification of mercury in tailings

This study used steel slag, fly ash, and metakaolin as raw materials (SFM materials) to create silica-alumina-based geopolymers that can solidify Hg2+ when activated with sodium-based water glass. The experiments began with a triangular lattice point mixing design experiment, and the results were fitted, analyzed, and predicted. The optimum SFM material mass ratio was found to be 70% steel slag, 25% fly ash, and 5% metakaolin. The optimum modulus of the activator was identified by comparing the unconfined compressive strength and solidifying impact on Hg2+of geosynthetics with different modulus. The SFM geopolymer was then applied in the form of potting to cure the granulated mercury tailings. The inclusion of 50% SFM material generated a geosynthetic that reduced mercury transport to the surface soil by roughly 90%. The mercury concentration of herbaceous plant samples was also reduced by 78%. It indicates that the SFM material can effectively attenuate the migration transformation of mercury. Finally, characterization methods such as XPS and FTIR were used to investigate the mechanism of Hg2+ solidification by geopolymers generated by SFM materials. The possible solidification mechanisms were proposed as alkaline environment-induced mercury precipitation, chemical bonding s, surface adsorption of Hg2+ and its precipitates by the geopolymer, and physical encapsulation.

Harmonizing soil restoration and microbial diversity: Insights from a Two-Year field experiment with Sedum-Rice rotation systems

Phytoremediation coupled with agroproduction (PCA) model contributes to sustainable agriculture and environmental management. This study investigated the impact of continuous cropping early/late season rice (RR) and Sedum alfredii-rice rotation (SR) on soil physical and chemical properties, as well as their relationships with soil microbial community. In 2022, SR treatment significantly increased pH value and organic matter content by 7 % and 17 %, respectively, compared to the levels in 2020, while RR treatment showed no change. RR treatment resulted in a significant decrease in soil concentrations of Ca, Mg, and K by 18.42 %, 29.01 %, and 7.77 %, respectively. Furthermore, SR treatment saw reductions of 29.62 % in total Cd and 38.30 % in DTPA extractable Cd in the soil. Over the two years, both treatments notably influenced the diversity, structure, and network of the rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities, which are crucial for nutrient cycling and plant health. Notably, SR treatment exhibited a more complex network compared to RR, suggesting a greater impact on the interconnected systems. Therefore, these findings highlight the potential of Sedum rotation system to rehabilitate contaminated soils while supporting agricultural practices, which is essential for food security and environmental sustainability. This research direction holds promise for future exploration and application in the fields of phytoremediation and agroecology.

The effect of different amendments on Cd availability and bacterial community after three-year consecutive application in Cd-contaminated paddy soils

In situ immobilization is a widely used measure for passivating Cd-contaminated soils. Amendments need to be continuously applied to achieve stable remediation effects. However, few studies have evaluated the impact of consecutive application of amendments on soil health and the microecological environment. A field experiment was conducted in a Cd-contaminated paddy (available Cd concentration 0.40 mg kg-1) on the Chengdu Plain to investigate the changes in soil Cd availability and response characteristics of soil bacterial communities after consecutive application of rice straw biochar (SW), fly ash (FM) and marble powder (YH) amendments from 2018 to 2020. Compared with control treatment without amendments (CK), soil pH increased by 0.6, 0.5 and 1.5 under SW, FM and YH amendments, respectively, and the soil available Cd concentration decreased by 10.71%, 21.42% and 25.00%, respectively. The Cd concentration in rice grain was less than 0.2 mg kg-1 under YH amendment, which was within the Chinese Contaminant Limit in Food of National Food Safety Standards (GB2762-2022) in the second and third years. The three amendments had different effects on the transformation of Cd fractions in soil, which may be relevant to the specific bacterial communities shaped under different treatments. The proportion of Fe-Mn oxide-bound fraction Cd (OX-Cd) increased by 11% under YH treatment, which may be due to the promotion of Fe(III) and Cd binding by some enriched iron-oxidizing bacteria, such as Lysobacter, uncultured_Pelobacter sp. and Sulfurifusis. Candidatus_Tenderia and Sideroxydans were enriched under SW and FM amendments, respectively, and were likely beneficial for reducing Cd availability in soil through Cd immobilization. These results revealed the significance of the bacterial community in soil Cd immobilization after consecutive application of amendments and highlighted the potential of applying YH amendment to ensure the safe production of rice in Cd-contaminated soil.

Environmental protection measures mitigate Pb but not Cd accumulation in soils: Evidence from a 49-year soil chronosequence in an industrial and mining city in Southwest China

To address severe soil Pb and Cd contamination from anthropogenic activities, governments have implemented various environmental management measures. However, the extent to which these measures have constrained Pb and Cd accumulation in industrial and mining city soils remains unclear. Here, we investigated Pb and Cd accumulation patterns in soils of Panzhihua City, Southwest China, and determined their dominant anthropogenic drivers using Pb and Cd isotopes. Pb accumulation initially slowed and then increased, while Cd showed a continuous acceleration. Traffic and coal-burning power generation were the dominant anthropogenic forcings for Pb and Cd accumulation in the soils, respectively. Environmental protection measures, particularly the ban on leaded gasoline, significantly reduced Pb accumulation by decreasing traffic-related Pb contributions to soils from 1980 to 2008. However, environmental management measures could not practically mitigate Cd accumulation in the soils owing to the high Cd content in consumed coal, poor efficiency of air pollutant control measures, and steep rise in coal-burning power generation. This study thus indicates the criticality of controlling Cd emissions from thermal power generation. Additionally, the challenges faced by small industrial and mining cities during economic transformation and environmental policy implementation warrant more attention.

Associations between blood nickel and lung function in young Chinese: An observational study combining epidemiology and metabolomics

Prior research has explored the relationship between occupational exposure to nickel and lung function. Nonetheless, there is limited research examining the correlation between blood nickel levels and lung function among young adults in the general population. The metabolomic changes associated with nickel exposure have not been well elucidated. On August 23, 2019, we enrolled 257 undergraduate participants from the Chinese Undergraduates Cohort to undergo measurements of blood nickel levels and lung function. The follow-up study was conducted in May 2021. A linear mixed-effects model was employed to assess the relationship between blood nickel levels and lung function. We also conducted stratified analyses by home address. In addition, in order to explore the biological mechanism of lung function damage caused by nickel exposure, we performed metabolomic analyses of baseline serum samples (N = 251). Both analysis of variance and mixed linear effect models were utilized to assess the impact of blood nickel exposure on metabolism. Our findings from cross-sectional and cohort analyses revealed a significant association between blood nickel levels and decreased forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) among young adults in the general population. Furthermore, we found stronger associations in urban areas. In metabolomics analysis, a total of nine metabolites were significantly changed under blood nickel exposure. The changed metabolites were mainly enriched in six pathways including carbohydrate, amino acid, and cofactor vitamin metabolism. These metabolic pathways involve inflammation and oxidative stress, indicating that high concentrations of nickel exposure can cause inflammation and oxidative stress by disrupting the above metabolism of the body.

Field evaluation of oil crop rotations for cadmium remediation and safe vegetable oil production across five sites with varying contamination levels

Oil crops have the potential to remediate cadmium (Cd)-contaminated farmland while producing safe vegetable oil. However, it is currently unknown whether different oil crops can remediate varying levels of Cd contamination in farmland. This study assessed agricultural fields in southern China contaminated with Cd levels ranging from 0.42 to 10.3 mg/kg. Three representative oilseed crops winter rape, oil sunflower, and peanut were selected for field experiments under two rotation systems. The effects of different rotation systems on remediating various Cd contamination levels were compared to evaluate the feasibility and potential of a two oil crop rotation system. All three crops showed good tolerance to Cd without signs of biomass deficiency. The biomass produced by the rape-oil sunflower and rape-peanut rotation systems was 33.44-459.00 g/ha and 30.64-281.40 g/ha, respectively. The Cd concentration in the oil products obtained complied with existing national and international standards (0.05 mg/kg). The remediation efficiency of the rape-oil sunflower and rape-peanut rotation systems was 1.98-7.37 % and 1.21-4.94 %, respectively. However, the remediation efficiencies and enrichment capacities of both rotation systems were somewhat inhibited by heavy Cd contamination (10.3 mg/kg). Therefore, the agricultural model of rotating two oilseed crops can be implemented in Cd-contaminated farmland at all levels but is more suitable for light to moderate Cd contamination.

Microplastics alter cadmium accumulation in different soil-plant systems: Revealing the crucial roles of soil bacteria and metabolism

Cadmium (Cd) and microplastics (MPs) gradually increased to be prevalent contaminants in soil, it is important to understand their combined effects on different soil-plant systems. We studied how different doses of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene (PE) affected Cd accumulation, pakchoi growth, soil chemical and microbial properties, and metabolomics in two soil types. We found that high-dose MPs decreased Cd accumulation in plants in red soil, while all MPs decreased Cd bioaccumulation in fluvo-aquic soil. This difference was primarily attributed to the increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pH in red soil by high-dose MPs, which inhibited Cd uptake by plant roots. In contrast, MPs reduced soil nitrate nitrogen and available phosphorus, and weakened Cd mobilization in fluvo-aquic soil. In addition, high-dose PLA proved detrimental to plant health, manifesting in shortened shoot and root lengths. Co-exposure of Cd and MPs induced the shifts in bacterial populations and metabolites, with specific taxa and metabolites closely linked to Cd accumulation. Overall, co-exposure of Cd and MPs regulated plant growth and Cd accumulation by driving changes in soil bacterial community and metabolic pathways caused by soil chemical properties. Our findings could provide insights into the Cd migration in different soil-plant systems under MPs exposure. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) are common pollutants in farmland soil. Co-exposure of MPs and Cd can alter Cd accumulation in plants, and pose a potential threat to human health through the food chain. Here, we investigated the effects of different types and doses of MPs on Cd accumulation, plant growth, soil microorganisms, and metabolic pathways in different soil-plant systems. Our results can contribute to our understanding of the migration and transport of Cd by MPs in different soil-plant systems and provide a reference for the control of combined pollution in the future research.

Electrokinetic Remediation of Cu- and Zn-Contaminated Soft Clay with Electrolytes Situated above Soil Surfaces

Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) has shown great potential for the remediation of in situ contaminated soils. For heavy metal-contaminated soft clay with high moisture content and low permeability, an electrokinetic remediation method with electrolytes placed above the ground surface is used to avoid issues such as electrolyte leakage and secondary contamination that may arise from directly injecting electrolytes into the soil. In this context, using this novel experimental device, a set of citric acid (CA)-enhanced EKR tests were conducted to investigate the optimal design parameters for Cu- and Zn-contaminated soft clay. The average removal rates of heavy metals Cu and Zn in these tests were in the range of 27.9-85.5% and 63.9-83.5%, respectively. The results indicate that the Zn removal was efficient. This was determined by the migration intensity of the electro-osmotic flow, particularly the volume reduction of the anolyte. The main factors affecting the Cu removal efficiency in sequence were the effective electric potential of the contaminated soft clay and the electrolyte concentration. Designing experimental parameters based on these parameters will help remove Cu and Zn. Moreover, the shear strength of the contaminated soil was improved; however, the degree of improvement was limited. Low-concentration CA can effectively control the contact resistance between the anode and soil, the contact resistance between the cathode and soil, and the soil resistance by increasing the amount of electrolyte and the contact area between the electrolyte and soil.

Innovative graph neural network approach for predicting soil heavy metal pollution in the Pearl River Basin, China

Predicting soil heavy metal (HM) content is crucial for monitoring soil quality and ensuring ecological health. However, existing methods often neglect the spatial dependency of data. To address this gap, our study introduces a novel graph neural network (GNN) model, Multi-Scale Attention-based Graph Neural Network for Heavy Metal Prediction (MSA-GNN-HMP). The model integrates multi-scale graph convolutional network (MS-GCN) and attention-based GNN (AGNN) to capture spatial relationships. Using surface soil samples from the Pearl River Basin, we evaluate the MSA-GNN-HMP model against four other models. The experimental results show that the MSA-GNN-HMP model has the best predictive performance for Cd and Pb, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.841 for Cd and 0.886 for Pb, and the lowest mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.403 mg kg-1 for Cd and 0.670 mg kg-1 for Pb, as well as the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.563 mg kg-1for Cd and 0.898 mg kg-1 for Pb. In feature importance analysis, latitude and longitude emerged as key factors influencing the heavy metal content. The spatial distribution prediction trend of heavy metal elements by different prediction methods is basically consistent, with the high-value areas of Cd and Pb respectively distributed in the northwest and northeast of the basin center. However, the MSA-GNN-HMP model demonstrates superior detail representation in spatial prediction. MSA-GNN-HMP model has excellent spatial information representation capabilities and can more accurately predict heavy metal content and spatial distribution, providing a new theoretical basis for monitoring, assessing, and managing soil pollution.

Strategies of soil microbial N-cycling in different cadmium contaminated soil with wheat straw return

Cadmium contamination inevitably affects the microbially mediated transformation of nitrogen in soils with wheat straw return. The responses of nitrogen functional microorganisms to cadmium in acidic and alkaline soils under wheat straw returned are still unclear. In this study, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and sequencing of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria were performed to investigate the effects of wheat straw application on nitrogen conversion in different Cd-contaminated soils during an incubation experiment. Results showed that the presence of Cd decreased the abundance of hao gene catalyzing nitrification and norB gene catalyzing denitrification process, resulting the accumulation of NH4+-N and reduction of NO3--N in the acidic soils. Additionally, Cd-contamination stimulates the nitrification catalyzed by bacterial amoA gene and thus reduced the NH4+-N content in the alkaline soils. Meanwhile, Cd dominated the decrease of NO3--N content by promoting denitrification process catalyzed by nirS gene. Among all nitrifying and denitrifying microorganisms, Nitrosospira are tolerant to Cd stress under alkaline condition but sensitive to acidic condition, which dominantly harbored hao gene in the acidic soils and bacterial amoA gene in the alkaline soils. This study aimed to provide reasonable information for the rational adoption of wheat straw returning strategies to realize nitrogen regulation in Cd-contaminated farmland soil.

Rapidly reducing cadmium from contaminated farmland soil by novel magnetic recyclable Fe3O4/mercapto-functionalized attapulgite beads

Reducing cadmium (Cd) content from contaminated farmland soils remains a major challenge due to the difficulty in separating commonly used adsorbents from soils. This study synthesized novel millimeter-sized magnetic Fe3O4/mercapto-functionalized attapulgite beads (MFBs) through a facile one-step gelation process incorporating alginate. The MFBs inherit the environmental stability of alginate and enhance its mechanical strength by hybridizing Fe3O4 and clay mineral components. MFBs can be easily separated from flooded soils by magnets. When applied to 12 Cd-polluted paddy soils and 14 Cd-polluted upland soils, MFBs achieved Cd(II) removal rates ranging from 16.9% to 62.2% and 9.8%-54.6%, respectively, within a 12-h period. The MFBs predominantly targeted the exchangeable and acid soluble, and reducible fractions of Cd, with significantly enhanced removal efficiencies in paddy soils compared to upland soils. Notably, MFBs exhibited superior adsorption performance in soils with lower pH and organic matter (OM) content, where the bioavailability and mobility of Cd are heightened. The reduction of Cd content by MFBs is a sustainable and safe method, as it permanently removes the bioavailable Cd from soil, rather than temporarily reducing its bioavailability. The functional groups such as -SH, -OH, present in attapulgite and alginate of MFBs, played a crucial role in Cd(II) adsorption. Additionally, attapulgite and zeolite provided a porous matrix structure that further enhanced Cd(II) adsorption. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that both chemical precipitation and surface complexation contributed to Cd(II) removal. The MFBs maintained 87.6% Cd removal efficiency after 5 regeneration cycles. The surface of the MFBs exposed new adsorption sites and increased the specific surface area during multiple cycles with Cd-contaminated soil. This suggests that MFBs treatment with magnetic retrieval is a potentially effective pathway for the rapid removal of Cd from contaminated farmland soils.

Temporal and Spatial Variation of Toxic Metal Concentrations in Cultivated Soil in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China: Characteristics and Mechanisms

The toxic metal (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) pollution in 250 agricultural soil samples representing the urban area of Jiaxing was studied to investigate the temporal and spatial variations. Compared to the early 1990s, the pollution level has increased. Industry and urbanization were the main factors causing toxic metal pollution on temporal variation, especially the use of feed containing toxic metals. The soil types and crop cultivation methods are the main factors causing toxic metal pollution on spatial variation. Although the single-factor pollution indices of all the toxic metals were within the safe limits, as per the National Soil Environmental Quality Standard (risk screening value), if the background values of soil elements in Jiaxing City are used as the standard, the pollution index of all the elements surveyed exceeds 1.0, reaching a level of mild pollution. The soil samples investigated were heavily contaminated with toxic metal compounds, and their levels increased over time. This situation poses potential ecological and health risks.

The Uptake, Transfer, and Detoxification of Cadmium in Plants and Its Exogenous Effects

Cadmium (Cd) exerts a toxic influence on numerous crucial growth and development processes in plants, notably affecting seed germination rate, transpiration rate, chlorophyll content, and biomass. While considerable advances in Cd uptake and detoxification of plants have been made, the mechanisms by which plants adapt to and tolerate Cd toxicity remain elusive. This review focuses on the relationship between Cd and plants and the prospects for phytoremediation of Cd pollution. We highlight the following issues: (1) the present state of Cd pollution and its associated hazards, encompassing the sources and distribution of Cd and the risks posed to human health; (2) the mechanisms underlying the uptake and transport of Cd, including the physiological processes associated with the uptake, translocation, and detoxification of Cd, as well as the pertinent gene families implicated in these processes; (3) the detrimental effects of Cd on plants and the mechanisms of detoxification, such as the activation of resistance genes, root chelation, vacuolar compartmentalization, the activation of antioxidant systems and the generation of non-enzymatic antioxidants; (4) the practical application of phytoremediation and the impact of incorporating exogenous substances on the Cd tolerance of plants.

Comprehensive assessment of exposure and environmental risk of potentially toxic elements in surface water and sediment across China: A synthesis study

China faces a serious challenge with water pollution posed by potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Comprehensive and reliable environmental risk assessment is paramount for precise pollution prevention and control. Previous studies generally focused on a single environmental compartment within small regions, and the uncertainty in risk calculation is not fully considered. This study revealed the current exposure status of 11 PTEs in surface water and sediment across China using previously reported concentration data in 301 well-screened articles. Ecological and human health risks were evaluated and the uncertainty related to calculation parameters and exposure dataset were quantified. PTEs of high concern were further identified. Results showed Mn and Zn had the highest concentration levels, while Hg and Cd had the lowest concentrations in both surface water and sediment. Risk assessment of individual PTE showed that high-risk PTEs varied by risk receptors and environmental compartments. Nationwide, the probability of aquatic organisms being affected by Mn, Zn, Cu, and As in surface water exceeded 10 %. In sediment, Cd and Hg exhibited high and considerable risk, respectively. As was identified as the major PTE threatening human health as its carcinogenic risk was 1.45 × 10-4 through direct ingestion. Combined risk assessment showed the PTE mixture in surface water and sediment posed medium and high ecological risk with the risk quotient and potential ecological risk index of 1.76 and 558.36, respectively. Adverse health effects through incidental ingestion and dermal contact during swimming were negligible. This study provides a nationwide risk assessment of PTEs in China's aquatic environment and the robustness is verified, which can serve as a practical basis for policymakers to guide the early warning and precise management of water pollution.

Pollution sources and risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in soils of multiple land use types in the arid zone of Northwest China based on Monte Carlo simulation

The concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils of different land-use types varies depending on climatic conditions and human. Topsoil samples were collected in Northwest China to investigate PTE pollution and risk in different land uses, and thereby estimate the risk of various pollution sources. The results showed that human activity had an impact on PTE concentrations in the study area across all land use types, with farmland, grassland, woodland, and the gobi at moderate pollution levels and the desert at light pollution levels. Different PTE sources pose different risks depending on the land-use type. Apart from deserts, children are exposed to carcinogenic risk from a variety of sources. A mixed natural and agricultural source was the main source of public health risk in the study area, contributing 38.7% and 39.0% of the non-carcinogenic and 40.7% and 35.5% of the carcinogenic risks, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations showed children were at a higher health risk from PTEs than adult s under all land uses, which ranked in severity as farmland > woodland > grassland > gobi > desert. As and Ni has a higher probability of posing both a non-carcinogenic and a carcinogenic risk to children. Sensitivity analysis showed that the contribution of parameters to the assessment model of PTEs exhibited the following contribution pattern: concentration > average body weight > ingestion rate > other parameters. The PTEs affecting the risk assessment model were not common among different land use types, where the importance distribution pattern of each parameter was basically the same in woodland, grassland, and farmland, and Ni contributed the most to carcinogenic risk. However, Cr contributed the most to the carcinogenic risk in the desert and gobi.

Influences of coexisting aged polystyrene microplastics on the ecological and health risks of cadmium in soils: A leachability and oral bioaccessibility based study

Whether coexisting microplastics (MPs) affect the ecological and health risks of cadmium (Cd) in soils is a cutting-edge scientific issue. In this study, four typical Chinese soils were prepared as artificially Cd-contaminated soils with/without aged polystyrene (PS). TCLP and in vitro PBET model were used to determine the leachability (ecological risk) and oral bioaccessibility (human health risk) of soil Cd. The mechanisms by which MPs influence soil Cd were discussed from direct and indirect perspectives. Results showed that there was no significant difference in the leachability of soil Cd with/without aged PS. Additionally, aged PS led to a significant decrease in the bioaccessibility of soil Cd in gastric phase, but not in small intestinal phase. The increase in surface roughness and the new characteristic peaks (e.g., Si-O-Si) of aged PS directly accounted for the change in Cd bioaccessibility. The change in organic matter content indirectly accounted for the exceptional increase in Cd bioaccessibility of black soil with aged PS in small intestinal phase. Furthermore, the changes in cation exchange capacity and Cd mobility factor caused by aged PS explained the change in Cd leachability. These results contribute to a deeper understanding about environmental and public health in complicated emerging scenarios.

Enhancing phytoremediation of cadmium and arsenic in alkaline soil by Miscanthus sinensis: A study on the synergistic effect of endophytic fungi and biochar

Endophytic fungi (Trichoderma harzianum (TH) and Paecilomyces lilacinus (PL)) showed potential in phytoremediation for soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs (Cd and As)). However, their efficiency is limited, which can be enhanced with the assistance of biochar. This study sought to investigate the effects of TH at two application rates (T1: 4.5 g m-2; T2: 9 g m-2), PL at two application rates (P1: 4.5 g m-2; P2: 9 g m-2), in conjunction with biochar (BC) at 750 g m-2 on the phytoremediation of PTEs by Miscanthus sinensis (M. sinensis). The results showed that the integration of endophytic fungi with biochar notably enhanced the accumulation of Cd and As in M. sinensis by 59.60 %-114.38 % and 49.91 %-134.60 %, respectively. The treatments T2BC and P2BC emerged as the most effective. Specifically, the P2BC treatment significantly enhanced the soil quality index (SQI > 0.55) across all examined soil layers, markedly improving the overall soil condition. It was observed that T2BC treatment could elevate the SQI to 0.56 at the 0-15 cm depth. The combined amendment shifted the primary influences on plant PTEs accumulation from fungal diversity and soil nutrients to bacterial diversity and the availability of soil PTEs. Characteristic microorganisms identified under the combined treatments were RB41 and Pezizaceae, indicating an increase in both bacterial and fungal diversity. This combination altered the soil microbial community, influencing key metabolic pathways. The combined application of PL and biochar was superior to the TH and biochar combination for the phytoremediation of M. sinensis. This approach not only enhanced the phytoremediation potential but also positively impacted soil health and microbial community, suggesting that the synergistic use of endophytic fungi and biochar is an effective strategy for improving the condition of alkaline soils contaminated with PTEs.

The role of exogenous hydrogen sulfide in mitigating cadmium toxicity in plants: A comprehensive meta-analysis

Reducing the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and mitigating its toxicity are pivotal strategies for addressing Cd pollution's threats to agriculture and human health. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) serves as a signaling molecule, playing a crucial role in plant stress defense mechanisms. Nevertheless, a comprehensive assessment of the impact of exogenous H2S on plant growth, antioxidant properties, and gene expression under Cd stress remains lacking. In this meta-analysis, we synthesized 575 observations from 27 articles, revealing that exogenous H2S significantly alleviates Cd-induced growth inhibition in plants. Specifically, it enhances root length (by 8.71%), plant height (by 15.67%), fresh weight (by 15.15%), dry weight (by 22.54%), and chlorophyll content (by 27.99%) under Cd stress conditions. H2S boosts antioxidant enzyme activity, particularly catalase (CAT), by 39.51%, thereby reducing Cd-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Moreover, it impedes Cd translocation from roots to shoots, resulting in a substantial 40.19% reduction in stem Cd content. Additionally, H2S influences gene expression in pathways associated with antioxidant enzymes, metal transport, heavy metal tolerance, H2S biosynthesis, and energy metabolism. However, the efficacy of exogenous H2S in alleviating Cd toxicity varies depending on factors such as plant species, concentration of the H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), application method, and cultivation techniques. Notably, NaHS concentrations exceeding 200 μM may adversely affect plants. Overall, our study underscores the role of exogenous H2S in mitigating Cd toxicity and elucidates its mechanism, providing insights for utilizing H2S to combat Cd pollution in agriculture.

Lead exposure in Chinese children: Urbanization lowers children's blood lead levels (BLLs)

Lead is a toxic metal that can pose a huge threat to children's health. China has experienced rapid urbanization since the reform in 1978; however, there has been no examination of the potential influence of this urbanization on children's blood lead levels (BLLs). This study is the initial investigation to explore the correlation between urbanization and BLLs in Chinese children. Five windows of time are considered: pre-2000, 2001-2005, 2006-2010, 2011-2015 and 2016-2021. The results show that urbanization affected lead distribution in urban soil and agricultural soil during the above periods, especially in northern China. The higher non-carcinogenic risk of lead for children is consistent with the lead pollution in soil (3 < Igeo ≤ 4). Urban children's BLLs are slightly higher than those of rural children in 2001-2010, but rural children's BLLs in 2011-2021 are higher than those of urban children during China's urbanization. The areas of rural decline and the areas of urban growth increased across all the window periods. However, the BLLs decrease in all rural and urban areas during all window periods, especially in urban areas. Children's BLLs have a significantly negative correlation with urban areas (p < 0.01). Therefore, China's urbanization has a significant effect on the decrease in children's BLLs. The significance of this study is to provide a fresh perspective and innovative strategy for policymaking in order to reduce children's BLLs and prevent lead exposure. This can be achieved by transforming their external living environment from a rural lifestyle to an urban one, while also ensuring access to well education and maintaining a balanced nutrient intake.

Exploration the interaction of cadmium and copper toxic effects in pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L) roots through combinatorial transcriptomic and weighted gene co-expression network analysis

The interaction between cadmium(Cd) and copper(Cu) during combined pollution can lead to more complex toxic effects on humans and plants.However, there is still a lack of sufficient understanding regarding the types of interactions at the plant molecular level and the response strategies of plants to combined pollution. To assess this, we investigated the phenotypic and transcriptomic patterns of pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L) roots in response to individual and combined pollution of Cd and Cu. The results showed that compared to single addition, the translocation factor of heavy metals in roots significantly decreased (p < 0.05) under the combined addition, resulting in higher accumulation of Cd and Cu in the roots. Transcriptomic analysis of pakchoi roots revealed that compared to single pollution, there were 312 and 1926 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) specifically regulated in the Cd2Cu20 and Cd2Cu100 combined treatments, respectively. By comparing the expression of these DEGs among different treatments, we found that the combined pollution of Cd and Cu mainly affected the transcriptome of the roots in an antagonistic manner. Enrichment analysis indicated that pakchoi roots upregulated the expression of genes involved in glucosetransferase activity, phospholipid homeostasis, proton transport, and the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids and flavonoids to resist Cd and Cu combined pollution. Using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we identified hub genes related to the accumulation of Cd and Cu in the roots, which mainly belonged to the LBD, thaumatin-like protein, ERF, MYB, WRKY, and TCP transcription factor families. This may reflect a transcription factor-driven trade-off strategy between heavy metal accumulation and growth in pakchoi roots. Additionally, compared to single metal pollution, the expression of genes related to Nramp, cation/H+ antiporters, and some belonging to the ABC transporter family in the pakchoi roots was significantly upregulated under combined pollution. This could lead to increased accumulation of Cd and Cu in the roots. These findings provide new insights into the interactions and toxic mechanisms of multiple metal combined pollution at the molecular level in plants.

Comprehensive assessment of the microbial community structure in a typical lead-zinc mine soil

Understanding the microbial community structure in soil contaminated with heavy metals (HMs) is a precondition to conduct bioremediation in mine soil. Samples were collected from a typical lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) mine to assess the microbial community structure of the HMs concentrated in the soil. The goal was to analyze the bacterial and fungal community structures and their interactions using the 16S rRNA genes and internal transcribed spacer high-throughput sequencing. Analyses at different sampling sites showed that contamination with HMs significantly reduced the bacterial richness and diversity but increased that of the fungi. The predominant bacteria genera of Acidobacteriales, Gaiellales, Anaerolineaceae, Sulfurifustis, and Gemmatimonadaceae, and predominant fungal genera of Sordariomycetes, Talaromyces, and Mortierella were assumed as HM resistant genera in Pb-Zn mining area. The pH effect on the bacterial and fungal communities was opposite to those of Cd, Pb, and Zn. This study offers comprehensive outlooks for bacterial and fungal community structures upon multiple HM stresses in the soil around a typical Pb-Zn mine area.

Cadmium disrupts spermatogenic cell cycle via piRNA-DQ717867/p53 pathway

Cadmium (Cd) is a harmful environmental pollutant that disrupts public health, including respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. In this study, male rats were exposed to CdCl2 at a dose of 3 mg/kg by oral for 28 days to investigate the impact on spermatogenesis. Testis tissue samples were collected after sacrifice, and piRNA expression levels were measured using piRNA microarray and qPCR. PiRNAs, specialized molecules involved in spermatogenesis, were examined. CdCl2 exposure led to disrupted piRNA expression, particularly in piRNA-DQ759395 in rats. This piRNA was found to have a binding site with p53, and a similar piRNA-DQ717867 was discovered in mice. In GC-2spd cells, CdCl2 exposure increased piRNA-DQ717867 expression, which resulted in cell cycle arrest and abnormal expression of cell cycle-related proteins. The activation of p53-related pathways and disruptions in cell cycle regulation were also observed. Antagomir-717867 transfections and PFT-a pretreatment in GC-2spd cells supported the involvement of piRNA-DQ717867 in regulating cell cycle-related proteins. This study suggests that Cd exposure induces abnormal expression of piRNA-DQ759395 in rat testis and that piRNA-DQ717867 may regulate p53, causing cell cycle abnormalities in GC-2spd cells. These findings help understand the mechanisms of male reproductive toxicity caused by Cd exposure and emphasize the role of piRNAs in cell cycle regulation and male reproductive health.

Biochar impacts on carbon dioxide, methane emission, and cadmium accumulation in rice from Cd-contaminated soils; A meta-analysis

Climate change and cadmium (Cd) contamination pose severe threats to rice production and food security. Biochar (BC) has emerged as a promising soil amendment for mitigating these challenges. To investigate the BC effects on paddy soil upon GHG emissions, Cd bioavailability, and its accumulation, a meta-analysis of published data from 2000 to 2023 was performed. Data Manager 5.3 and GetData plot Digitizer software were used to obtain and process the data for selected parameters. Our results showed a significant increase of 18% in soil pH with sewage sludge BC application, while 9% increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) using bamboo chips BC. There was a significant reduction in soil bulk density (8%), but no significant effects were observed for soil porosity, except for wheat straw BC which reduced the soil porosity by 6%. Sewage sludge and bamboo chips BC significantly reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) by 7-8% while municipal biowaste reduced methane (CH4) emissions by 2%. In the case of heavy metals, sunflower seedshells-derived materials and rice husk BC significantly reduced the bioavailable Cd in paddy soils by 24% and 12%, respectively. Cd uptake by rice roots was lowered considerably by the addition of kitchen waste (22%), peanut hulls (21%), and corn cob (15%) based BC. Similarly, cotton sticks, kitchen waste, peanut hulls, and rice husk BC restricted Cd translocation from rice roots to shoots by 22%, 27%, 20%, and 19%, respectively, while sawdust and rice husk-based BC were effective for reducing Cd accumulation in rice grains by 25% and 13%. Regarding rice yield, cotton sticks-based BC significantly increased the yield by 37% in Cd-contaminated paddy soil. The meta-analysis demonstrated that BC is an effective and multi-pronged strategy for sustainable and resilient rice cultivation by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and Cd accumulation while improving yields under the increasing threat of climate change.

Indirect Estimation of Heavy Metal Contamination in Rice Soil Using Spectral Techniques

The rapid growth of industrialization and urbanization in China has led to an increase in soil heavy metal pollution, which poses a serious threat to ecosystem safety and human health. The advancement of spectral technology offers a way to rapidly and non-destructively monitor soil heavy metal content. In order to explore the potential of rice leaf spectra to indirectly estimate soil heavy metal content. We collected farmland soil samples and measured rice leaf spectra in Xushe Town, Yixing City, Jiangsu Province, China. In the laboratory, the heavy metals Cd and As were determined. In order to establish an estimation model between the pre-processed spectra and the soil heavy metals Cd and As content, a genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimise the partial least squares regression (PLSR). The model's accuracy was evaluated and the best estimation model was obtained. The results showed that spectral pre-processing techniques can extract hidden information from the spectra. The first-order derivative of absorbance was more effective in extracting spectral sensitive information from rice leaf spectra. The GA-PLSR model selects only about 10% of the bands and has better accuracy in spectral modeling than the PLSR model. The spectral reflectance of rice leaves has the capacity to estimate Cd content in the soil (relative percent difference [RPD] = 2.09) and a good capacity to estimate As content in the soil (RPD = 2.97). Therefore, the content of the heavy metals Cd and As in the soil can be estimated indirectly from the spectral data of rice leaves. This study provides a reference for future remote sensing monitoring of soil heavy metal pollution in farmland that is quantitative, dynamic, and non-destructive over a large area.

Intercropping of Pteris vittata and maize on multimetal contaminated soil can achieve remediation and safe agricultural production

Soil contamination by multimetals is widespread. Hyperaccumulator-crop intercropping has been confirmed to be an effective method for arsenic (As)- or cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil that can achieve soil cleanup and agricultural production. However, the influencing factors and response of hyperaccumulator-crop intercropping to multimetal-contaminated soil are still unclear. In this study, intercropping of the As hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata and maize was conducted on two typical types of multimetal-contaminated soil, namely, Soil A contaminated by As, Cd, and lead (Pb) and Soil B contaminated by As, Cd, and chromium (Cr). Intercropping reduced As, Cd, and Pb in the maize grains by 60 %, 66.7 %, and 20.4 %, respectively. The concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Cr in P. vittata increased by 314 %, 300 %, 447.3 %, and 232.6 %, respectively, relative to their concentrations in the monoculture plants. Two soils with different levels of contamination showed that higher heavy metal content might diminish the ability of intercropping to reduce soil heavy metal risk. No notable difference in soil microbial diversity was found between the intercropped and monocultured plants. The composition of microbial communities of intercropping groups were more similar to those of monoculture P. vittata on two different soils (Soils A and B). An imbalance between the amount of As taken up by the plants and the reduction in As in the soil was observed, and this imbalance may be related to watering, As leaching, and heterogeneity of soil As distribution. Reducing the risk resulting from As leaching and enhancing the efficiency of phytoextraction should be emphasized in remediation practices.

Whole blood cadmium levels and depressive symptoms in Chinese young adults: A prospective cohort study combing metabolomics

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the association between Cd exposure and depressive symptoms in Chinese young adults. And to investigate the potential metabolic changes associated with high blood Cd concentrations.

METHODS

We conducted a cohort study in 2019 and 2021. Blood Cd and depressive symptoms were collected during baseline and follow-up. The nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scores were used to assess depressive symptoms. We used the generalized linear mixed model to estimate the association between blood Cd levels and depressive symptoms. A metabolomic and lipidomic analysis based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted on a total of 679 blood samples. The metabolomic data were analyzed using variance analysis and linear mixed effects models.

RESULTS

Blood Cd concentrations were significantly associated with increased severity of depression symptoms [odds ratio (OR) 2.07, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-4.11]. Metabolomics analysis found 93 metabolites with significant statistical differences between the lowest blood Cd level group and the highest Cd level group. Among the 93 differential metabolites, 17 were enriched in 7 differential metabolic pathways.

CONCLUSIONS

Blood Cd was associated with increased severity of depression symptoms in Chinese young adults. Cd exposure may affect depressive symptoms by inducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and disrupting amino acid metabolism.

Alleviating the adverse effects of Cd-Pb contamination through the application of silicon fertilizer: Enhancing soil microbial diversity and mitigating heavy metal contamination

The use of silicon fertilizer (SF) as a means of remediating cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) pollution has proven to be beneficial. However, the mechanism via which SF enhances soil quality and crop productivity under Cd- and Pb-contaminated soil (S) remains unclear. This study investigated the impacts of chemical fertilizer, mineral SF (MSF), and organic SF (OSF) on microbial community structure, activity of nutrient acquisition enzymes, and growth of tobacco in the presence of S condition. SF significantly reduced the contents of Cd and Pb in soil under S condition by 6.92-42.43% and increased plant height and leaf area by 15.27-81.77%. Moreover, the use of SF was observed to increase the efficiency of soil carbon and phosphorus cycling under S condition by 6.88-23.08%. Concurrently, SF was found to play a crucial role in facilitating the establishment of a complex, efficient, and interdependent molecular ecological network among soil microorganisms. In this context, Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota were observed to be integral components of this network. SF was found to have a substantial positive impact on the metabolic functions and organismal systems of soil microorganisms. Moreover, the combined utilization of the Mantel test and partial least squares path model provided empirical evidence supporting the assertion that the administration of SF had a positive impact on both soil nutrient acquisition enzyme activity and tobacco growth, which was attributed to the enhancement of soil microbial diversity resulting from the application of SF. Furthermore, compared with MSF, OSF has advantages in reducing soil Pb and Cd content, promoting tobacco agronomic traits, increasing the number of key microbial communities, and maintaining the structural stability of microbial networks. The aforementioned findings, therefore, suggest that the OSF played a pivotal role in alleviating the adverse impacts of S, thereby demonstrating its efficacy in this particular process.

Zinc deficiency drives ferroptosis resistance by lactate production in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Trace metal zinc is involved in key processes of solid tumors by its antioxidant properties, while the role of zinc at the onset of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains controversial. This study aimed to determine whether zinc is associated with the ESCC and underlying molecular events involving malignant progression. Based on a case-control study, we found serum and urine zinc were decreased and correlated with ESCC progression. Thus, an in vitro model for zinc deficiency (ZD) was established, and we found that ZD contributed to the proliferation, migration, and invasion of EC109 cells. Untargeted metabolomics identified 59 upregulated metabolites and 6 downregulated metabolites, among which glycolysis and ferroptosis-related oxidation of chain fatty acids might play crucial steps in ZD-treated molecular events. Interestingly, ZD disrupted redox homeostasis and enhanced cytosolic Fe2+ of EC109 cells, while lipid peroxidation, the key marker of ferroptosis occurrence, was decreased after ZD treatment. The mechanism underlying these changes may involve ZD-enhanced ESCC glycolysis and lactate production, which confer ferroptosis resistance by inhibiting of p-AMPK and leading to the upregulation of SREBP1 and SCD1 to enhance the production of anti-ferroptosis monounsaturated fatty acids.

A simulation and risk assessment framework for water-energy-environment nexus: A case study in the city cluster along the middle reach of the Yangtze River, China

In the Anthropocene, there is a strong interlinkage among water, energy, and the environment. The water-energy-environment nexus (WEEN) has been vigorously advocated as an emerging development paradigm and a global research agenda. Based on the nexus concept, a framework for the WEEN complex system simulation and risk assessment is developed. The three metropolitan areas of the city cluster along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (CCMRYR) are taken as the objects. Regional policies are combined with generic shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) to form a localized SSPs suitable for the research region. The dynamic simulation of the WEEN complex system and the risk analysis are carried out with the combination of system dynamics models and copula functions. Results show that: There are obvious differences in water utilization, energy consumption, air pollutant emissions, and water pollutant emissions among the three metropolitan areas. The issue of high carbon intensity in the Wuhan Metropolitan Coordinating Region needs to be emphasized and solved from the perspective of optimizing the industrial structure. Adhering to current development patterns, there will be successive peaks in water utilization, energy consumption, and carbon emissions in Wuhan, Dongting Lake, and Poyang Lake Metropolitan Coordinating Region by 2030, leading to high synergy risks at the systemic level, with maximum values of 0.84, 0.85, 0.62, respectively. A development path based on conservation priorities indicates that future policymaking needs to prioritize a resource-saving and pollution-control development pattern directed by technological upgrading against the backdrop of scarce natural resource endowments. The localized SSPs are a beneficial extension that enriches the narrative of regional-scale SSPs. The evolutionary trajectories and risk assessments of WEEN complex systems under different localized SSPs provide a sweeping insight into the consequences of policy decisions, thus enabling policymakers to appraise policy rationality and implement appropriate corrective measures.

Assessment of metals (Ni, Ba) deposition in plant types and their organs at Mersin City, Türkiye

The increase in heavy metal concentrations in the air, especially after the Industrial Revolution, is notable for the scientific world because of the adverse effects that threaten environmental and human health. Among the trace elements, nickel (Ni) is carcinogenic, and all barium (Ba) compounds are toxic. Trace elements are critical for human and environmental health. Their threat further increases, especially in the urban areas and surroundings with a high population. In urban areas, the trace element contamination in the airborne can be reduced using plants. However, which plant and plant organs absorb trace elements could not be determined. In the present study, Ni and Ba concentrations in the branch, wood, and leaf samples of 14 species collected from the city center of Mersin province were determined. As a result, broad-leaved species' Ni and Ba concentrations in their leaf sample were generally higher than other species. Almost all species had the lowest Ni and Ba concentrations in their wood samples. Among these 14 species, it was found that Ni concentration was very high, especially in non-washed leaves of Platanus orientalis, Photinia serrulata, and Citrus reticulate, and Ba concentration was very high in Citrus reticulata, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, Laurus nobilis, and Acer hyrcanum. Using broad-leaved species in urban areas where pollution is at high levels will significantly contribute to reducing Ni and Ba pollution. It is recommended that these points be considered in future urban landscaping projects.

Factors controlling the heavy metal ion activity in soil contaminated by microplastics with different mulch durations: Partial least squares path model

Film covers have been widely applied worldwide. However, the effects of long-term plastic film mulching use on heavy metal (HM) activity in soil remain unclear. This study focused on farmland in the upstream part of the Pearl River in China and collected 103 soil samples after 2, 5, and 15 years of plastic film mulching. The main environmental factors controlling microplastics (MPs), plasticizer phthalic acid esters (PAEs), HM pollution characteristics, and HM activity were analyzed. The results showed that Polyethylene (PE) and di(2-ethylhexyl) dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) were the main MPs and PAEs, respectively. The abundance of MPs and the concentrations of free HM ions (Cd, Cu, and Ni) in the soil solution increased with increasing plastic film mulching duration. The Partial Least Squares Path Model (PLS-PM) indicated that after plastic film mulching, soil chemical properties (pH/amorphous Fe) and biological properties (Dissolved organic carbon/ Easily oxidizable carbon/Microbial biomass carbon) were the main controlling factors for free and complexed HM ions (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Ni). These results suggest that, after plastic film mulching, MPs indirectly regulate HM activity by altering soil properties. This study provides a new perspective for the management of MPs and HM activities in agricultural ecosystems.

Differences in soil bacterial community structure during the remediation of Cd-polluted cotton fields by biochar and biofertilizer in Xinjiang, China

Introduction

Heavy metal pollution is a major worldwide environmental problem. Many remediation techniques have been developed, these techniques have different performance in different environments.

Methods

In this study, soil sampling was conducted in multiple cotton fields in Xinjiang, China, and found that cadmium (Cd) was the most abundant soil heavy metal. Then, to find the most suitable technique for the remediation of Cd pollution in cotton fields, a two-year study was conducted to explore the effects of cotton straw-derived biochar (BC, 3%) and Bacillus-based biofertilizer (BF, 1.5%) on cotton Cd uptake and transport and soil microbial community structure under Cd exposure conditions (soil Cd contents: 1, 2, and 4 mg·kg-1).

Results

The results showed that the bioaccumulation coefficients (Cd content of cotton organs / soil available Cd content) of cotton roots, stems, leaves, and buds/bolls reduced by 15.93%, 14.41%, 23.53%, and 20.68%, respectively after the application of BC, and reduced by 16.83%, 17.15%, 22.21%, and 26.25%, respectively after the application of BF, compared with the control (no BC and BF). Besides, the application of BC and BF reduced the transport of Cd from soil to root system, and enhanced the diversity of soil bacterial communities (dominant species: Alphaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria) and the metabolic functions related to amino acid synthesis. It was worth noting that the differential species for BF group vs BC group including Alphaproteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Bacilli, and Vicinamibacteria were associated with the enrichment and transport of Cd, especially the transport of Cd from cotton roots to stems.

Discussion

Therefore, the application of BC and BF changed the soil bacterial diversity in Cd-polluted cotton field, and then promoted the transport of Cd in cotton, ultimately improving soil quality. This study will provide a reference for the selection of soil heavy metal pollution remediation techniques in Xinjiang, China.

Characteristics and evaluation of heavy metal pollution in a soil-wheat system of an arid oasis city in northwest China

In this paper, the Cu and Ni accumulation and contamination levels in agricultural soils and wheat around a smelter in Jinchang City in northwest China were investigated with a combination of field investigations and indoor analytical tests, using a soil-wheat system as the study area. The average Cu and Ni contents in the soil were 119.50 mg kg-1 and 123.40 mg kg-1, respectively, both of which exceeded the local soil background values. The Cu and Ni contents in 46.15% o and 26.92% of sampling sites, respectively, exceeded the screening values for soil contamination risk in agricultural land in China. The average Cu content in different parts of wheat was in the order of roots (24.22 mg kg-1) > leaves (20.11 mg kg-1) > husks (5.51 mg kg-1) > grains (4.05 mg kg-1) > stalks (3.74 mg kg-1). Furthermore, the average Ni content ranked as leaves (24.64 mg kg-1) > roots (21.12 mg kg-1) > husks (6.95 mg kg-1) > stalks (1.75 mg kg-1) > grains (0.38 mg kg-1). The health risk evaluation showed that with average hazard index values of 0.88 for adults and 1.04 for children for Cu and Ni in wheat grain, wheat in this region is unlikely to pose a health risk to adults but may pose a lesser health risk to children. The Ni bio-concentration and translocation factors in the husk and leaves of wheat were greater than those of Cu and smaller than those of Cu in the other parts of wheat. The results of this study provide basic data for the remediation of heavy metal contamination in local agricultural soils.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in wild fish and seasonal variation and source identification of heavy metals in sediments: a case study of typical urban river in Xi'an, China

In order to determine the status of heavy metal pollution in river sediments and wild fish in Xi'an, concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) were collected and analyzed in sediments and wild fish during dry season (October-November 2020) and wet season (June-July 2021). This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of heavy metals in urban rivers of Xi'an, China. Their distribution characteristics and sources as well their pollution levels and health risks were assessed. The findings revealed that influenced by human activities, the heavy metal content in sediments (mg·kg-1 dry weight) in wet season was ranked as follows: Cr (73.09) > Zn (63.73) > Pb (40.31) > Ni (31.52) > Cu (24.86) > As (6.83); in the dry season: Zn (94.07) > Cr (69.59) > Cu (34.24) > Ni (33.60) > Pb (32.87) > As (7.60). Moreover, 32 fish samples from six species indicated an average metal content trend (mg·kg-1 wet weight) of Zn (8.70) > Cr (0.57) > Pb (0.28) > Ni (0.27) > Cu (0.24) > As (0.05). The potential ecological risk indices for sediment heavy metal concentrations in both seasons were well below the thresholds, which indicates that the aquatic environment is in safe level. The analysis of the potential ecological risk of sediment heavy metal concentrations indicates that the aquatic environment is safe for the time being. Based on the estimated daily intake (EDI), target risk quotient (THQ), total target risk quotient (TTHQ), cancer risk (CR), total cancer risk (TCR), and the permissible safety limits set by the agencies, the consumption of the fish examined is safe for human health. However, the presence of Cr and As in wild fish should still be a concern for human health, especially for children. The cumulative effect of heavy metals and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) suggest that sediment and heavy metals in fish are closely related, with higher concentrations in fish living in the bottom layer of the water column than in other water layers, and increasing with increasing predator levels. Correlation analysis and PMF modeling identified and determined four comparable categories of potential sources, namely, (1) atmospheric deposition and traffic sources, (2) agricultural sources, (3) industrial sources, and (4) natural sources.

Effects of Priestia aryabhattai on Phosphorus Fraction and Implications for Ecoremediating Cd-Contaminated Farmland with Plant-Microbe Technology

The application of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria has been widely studied in remediating Cd-contaminated soil, but only a few studies have reported on the interaction of P and Cd as well as the microbiological mechanisms with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in the soil because the activity of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria is easily inhibited by the toxicity of Cd. This paper investigates the phosphorus solubilization ability of Priestia aryabhattai domesticated under the stress of Cd, which was conducted in a soil experiment with the addition of Cd at different concentrations. The results show that the content of Ca2-P increased by 5.12-19.84%, and the content of labile organic phosphorus (LOP) increased by 3.03-8.42% after the addition of Priestia aryabhattai to the unsterilized soil. The content of available Cd decreased by 3.82% in the soil with heavy Cd contamination. Priestia aryabhattai has a certain resistance to Cd, and its relative abundance increased with the increased Cd concentration. The contents of Ca2-P and LOP in the soil had a strong positive correlation with the content of Olsen-P (p < 0.01), while the content of available Cd was negatively correlated with the contents of Olsen-P, Ca2-P, and LOP (p < 0.05). Priestia aryabhattai inhibits the transport of Cd, facilitates the conversion of low-activity P and insoluble P to Ca2-P and LOP in the soil, and increases the bioavailability and seasonal utilization of P in the soil, showing great potential in ecoremediating Cd-contaminated farmland soil with plant-microbe-combined technology.

Co-exposure to UV-aged microplastics and cadmium induces intestinal toxicity and metabolic responses in earthworms

Aged microplastics (MPs) alter the interaction with heavy metals due to changes in surface properties. However, the combined toxicological effects of aged MPs on heavy metals in soil remain poorly understood. In this study, earthworms were employed as model animals to investigate the effects of aged MPs on the biotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) by simulating the exposure patterns of original and UV-aged MPs (polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene (PE)) with Cd. The results showed that UV-aging decreased the zeta potential and increased the specific surface area of the MPs, which enhanced the bioaccumulation of Cd and caused more severe oxidative stress to earthworms. Meanwhile, the earthworm intestines exhibited increased tissue damage, including chloragogenous tissue congestion lesions, and typhlosole damage. Furthermore, the combined exposure to UV-aged MPs and Cd enhanced the complexity of the microbial network in the earthworm gut and interfered with endocrine disruption, membrane structure, and energy metabolic pathways in earthworms. The results emphasized the need to consider the degradation of MPs in the environment. Hence, we recommend that future toxicological studies use aged MPs that are more representative of the actual environmental conditions, with the results being important for the risk assessment and management of MPs.

Inversion of heavy metal copper content in soil-wheat systems using hyperspectral techniques and enrichment characteristics

The growing problem of heavy metal contamination in soil will seriously threaten the China's grain safety. The development of hyperspectral remote sensing technology provides the possibility to achieve rapid and non-destructive monitoring of soil heavy metal content. In this study, we used hyperspectral techniques and enrichment characteristics to explore the potential of wheat leaf spectral inversion for heavy metal copper (Cu) content in the soil-wheat system. First, we conducted potting experiments to plant wheat on soil contaminated with varying concentrations of the heavy metal Cu. Then, we analyzed the migration characteristics, correlation characteristics and enrichment characteristics of Cu in the soil-wheat system under different soil heavy metal Cu concentration treatments. Next, we analyzed the spectral and correlation features of wheat leaves, and explored the potential of wheat leaf spectra for the inversion of Cu content in full-band and eigen-band modeling. Finally, using the estimated Cu content of wheat leaves from the best inversion model, we further conducted inversions to obtain the Cu content and precision of the grain, stem, root, total soil, and soil-available states based on the enrichment characteristics. The results showed that: (1) The accumulation pattern was root > grain > leaf > stem when the soil Cu concentration was <200 mg kg-1, and root > leaf > stem > grain when the soil Cu concentration was >200 mg kg-1. (2) The correlation coefficients between the different analyzed elements of the soil-wheat system were high, and all of them reached a highly significant level (P < 0.01). This supports the use of wheat leaves to estimate the Cu contents of soil and different parts of wheat. (3) The best inversion accuracies were obtained by modeling second derivative (SD) spectra that were pre-processed by screening the characteristic bands. The modeled R2cv, RMSEcv,R2ev and RMSEev were 0.94, 2.72 mg kg-1, 0.91 and 3.64 mg kg-1, respectively. This indicates an excellent ability to estimate Cu content in wheat leaves. (4) Using the hyperspectral estimation of Cu content in wheat leaves and the grouped inversion of enrichment characteristics, the inversion accuracy was lower only for grains, and the R2cv and R2ev for stems and roots exceeded 0.90, those for total soil exceeded 0.85, and those for the soil available state exceeded 0.70. Therefore, it is possible to use the spectra of wheat leaves in combination with the inversion of enrichment characteristics to estimate the soil-wheat Cu content. This study provides guarantee and support for the detection of grain safety.

Ecological Risk and Pollution Assessment of Heavy Metals in Farmland Soil Profile with Consideration of Atmosphere Deposition in Central China

Heavy metals (HMs) in agricultural land have caused serious environmental problems, resulting in severe contamination of the food chain and posing potential health threats. This study aims to investigate the pollution levels and potential ecological risks of HMs in farmland soils in central China, taking into account atmospheric deposition. Several indices were used to assess the status of HMs and compare surface soil with deeper soil. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and UMAP clustering methods were utilized to identify the characteristics of HMs. Additionally, stepwise linear regression models were employed to quantify the contributions of different variables to the potential ecological risks of HMs. The results showed that the average content of Zn in surface soil (289.41 ± 87.72 mg/kg) was higher than in the deeper soil (207.62 ± 37.81 mg/kg), and similar differences were observed in the mean values of related Igeo (1.622 ± 0.453 in surface soil and 1.183 ± 0.259 in deeper soil) and PEI (0.965 ± 0.292 in surface soil and 0.692 ± 0.126 in deeper soil) indices. This indicates that surface soil is more heavily polluted. The UMAP results confirmed the high variability of HMs in the surface soil, while PCA results suggested the importance of pollution and ecological risk indices. The stepwise linear model revealed that different variable structures contribute differently to the risk. In conclusion, Cr and Zn were found to be the major contaminants in the local farmland soil, with higher concentrations in the surface soil. The geoaccumulation and total potential ecological risk were classified as low risk. High variability of HMs was observed in the surface soil. Therefore, HM-related pollution indices and ecological risk indices are important for assessing the contamination status of local HMs. The local potential ecological risk can be attributed to specific heavy metals, each of which can have different effects on the local ecological risk.

Spatial and variety distributions, risk assessment, and prediction model for heavy metals in rice grains in China

In this study, 6229 brown rice grains from three major rice-producing regions were collected to investigate the spatial and variety distributions of heavy metals in rice grains in China. The potential sources of heavy metals in rice grains were identified using the Pearson correlation matrix and principal component analysis, and the health risks of dietary exposure to heavy metals via rice consumption were assessed using the hazard index (HI) and total carcinogenic risk (TCR) method, respectively. Moreover, 48 paired soil and rice samples from 11 cities were collected to construct a predicting model for Cd accumulation in rice grains using the multiple linear stepwise regression analysis. The results indicated that Cd and Ni were the main heavy metal pollutants in rice grains in China, with approximately 10% of samples exceeding their corresponding maximum allowable limits. The Yangtze River basin had heavier pollution of heavy metals than the Southeast Coastal Region and Northeast Plain, and the indica rice varieties had higher heavy metal accumulation abilities compared with the japonica rice. The Cu, Pb, and Cd mainly originated from anthropogenic sources, while As, Hg, Cr, and Ni originated from both natural and anthropogenic sources. The mean HI and TCR values of dietary exposure to heavy metals via rice consumption ranged from 2.92 to 4.31 and 9.74 × 10-3 to 1.44 × 10-2, respectively, much higher than the acceptable range, and As and Ni were the main contributor to the HI and TCR for Chinese adults and children, respectively. The available Si (ASi), total Cd (TCd), available Mo (AMo), and available S (AS) were the main soil factors determining grain Cd accumulation. A multiple linear stepwise regression model was constructed based on ASi, TCd, AMo, and AS in soils with good accuracy and precision, which could be applied to predict Cd accumulation in rice grains and guide safe rice production in contaminated paddy fields.

Bacteria-loaded biochar for the immobilization of cadmium in an alkaline-polluted soil

The combination of biochar and bacteria is a promising strategy for the remediation of Cd-polluted soils. However, the synergistic mechanisms of biochar and bacteria for Cd immobilization remain unclear. In this study, the experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the combination of biochar and Pseudomonas sp. AN-B15, on Cd immobilization, soil enzyme activity, and soil microbiome. The results showed that biochar could directly reduce the motility of Cd through adsorption and formation of CdCO3 precipitates, thereby protecting bacteria from Cd toxicity in the solution. In addition, bacterial growth further induces the formation of CdCO3 and CdS and enhances Cd adsorption by bacterial cells, resulting in a higher Cd removal rate. Thus, bacterial inoculation significantly enhances Cd removal in the presence of biochar in the solution. Moreover, soil incubation experiments showed that bacteria-loaded biochar significantly reduced soil exchangeable Cd in comparison with other treatments by impacting soil microbiome. In particular, bacteria-loaded biochar increased the relative abundance of Bacillus, Lysobacter, and Pontibacter, causing an increase in pH, urease, and arylsulfatase, thereby passivating soil exchangeable Cd and improving soil environmental quality in the natural alkaline Cd-contaminated soil. Overall, this study provides a systematic understanding of the synergistic mechanisms of biochar and bacteria for Cd immobilization in soil and new insights into the selection of functional strain for the efficient remediation of the contaminated environments by bacterial biochar composite.

Toxic effects of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and tetracycline (TC) on the growth and development of Triticum aestivum: A meta-analysis

The environmental issue of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and tetracycline (TC) contamination in cereal crops has become a growing concern worldwide. An in-depth understanding of this issue would be of importance to promote effective management strategies for heavy metals and antibiotics worldwide. The present study was conducted to assess the toxic effects of heavy metals (Cd, Pb) and antibiotics (TC) on Triticum aestivum (T. aestivum, common wheat) based on studies conducted in the past 22 years. Data pertaining to the growth and development of T. aestivum were extracted and analyzed from 89 publications spanning from 2000 to 2022. Our results showed that Pb, Cd and TC significantly reduced growth and development by 11 %, 9 %, and 5 %, respectively. Additionally, significant accumulation of Cd (42 %) and Pb (17 %) was observed in T. aestivum samples, although there was little change in TC accumulation, which showed limited absorption, accumulation, and translocation of TC in wheat plants. Pb had the greatest impact on the yield of T. aestivum, followed by Cd, while TC had no apparent effect. Furthermore, exposure to Cd, Pb and TC reduced the photosynthetic rate due to chlorophyll reduction, with Cd having the most pronounced effect (58 %), followed by Pb (37 %) and TC (8 %). Cd exposure also significantly enhanced gaseous exchange (37 %) compared to TC and Pb, which reduced gaseous exchange by 4 % and 10 %, respectively. However, the treatments with TC (>50-100 mgL-1), Pb (>1000-2000 mg L-1) and Cd (>500-1000 mg L-1) increased the defense system of T. aestivum samples by 38 %, 15 %, and 11 %, respectively. The obtained findings have significant implications for risk assessment, pollution prevention, and remediation strategies to address soil contamination from Pb, Cd and TC in farmland.

A WRKY transcription factor, PyWRKY71, increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes and promoted the accumulation of cadmium in poplar

Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses significant threats to the ecological environment and human health. Currently, phytoremediation is recognized as an environmentally friendly approach for mitigating Cd pollution, with increasing attention on the utilization of transgenic plants in Cd-contaminated soil remediation. In this study, we isolated and cloned PyWRKY71 from Populus yunnanensis and conducted a pot experiment to validate its enhanced functionality in conferring Cd tolerance to woody plants (poplar). During the experiment, the increase in plant height of the OE-87 line (overexpression poplar) was 1.46 times than that of the wild type (WT). Moreover, PyWRKY71 significantly promoted the accumulation of Cd in poplar, especially in the roots, where the Cd content in the OE-45 and OE-87 lines was 1.42 times than that in the WT. The chlorophyll content of transgenic poplar leaves was higher than that of the WT, reflecting a protective mechanism of PyWRKY71. Additionally, the activities of other antioxidants, including POD, SOD, CAT, and MDA, were elevated in transgenic poplars, bolstering their tolerance to Cd stress. In summary, PyWRKY71 exhibits substantial potential in regulating plant tolerance to Cd stress. This study not only provides a solid scientific foundation but also introduces a novel modified poplar variety for the remediation of Cd pollution.

Migration of spent grain-modified colloidal ferrihydrite: Implications for the in situ stabilization of arsenic, lead, and cadmium in co-contaminated soil

The increase of metal mining, processing, and smelting activities has precipitated a substantial escalation in the contamination of soil by heavy metals. Ferrihydrite (FH) has been commonly used as an amendment for the immobilization of heavy metals in contaminated soil. However, FH suffers from drawbacks such as agglomeration and nonmigratory characteristics, which limit its practical application in soil remediation. Herein, a novel spent grain-modified ferrihydrite (FH-SG) colloidal system was developed, and the FH-SG transport mechanisms in the soil medium were fully studied, focusing in particular on the simultaneous in situ stabilization of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in co-contaminated soil. The results showed that the stabilization rates of the FH-SG material reached 94.66%, 96.12%, and 95.52% for water-soluble As, Pb, and Cd, respectively, and 72.22%, 49.39%, and 25.30% for bioavailable As, Pb, and Cd, respectively. The FH-SG material demonstrates notable migration properties in porous media. Theoretical calculation results of a single collector show that the migration deposition of FH-SG material in media is primarily governed by its inherent diffusion characteristics with minimal influence by gravitational forces and media interception. It is noteworthy that the maximum migration distance in quartz sand and soil media with different particle sizes can reach 2.07-2.92 m and 0.78-1.08 m, respectively. Altogether, our findings clearly demonstrate that FH-SG exhibits better stabilization and migration than those of FH alone and most proposed FH colloidal systems. The FH-SG colloidal system holds significant promise for the remediation of various kinds of complex polluted soil.

An integrated approach for quantifying trace metal sources in surface soils of a typical farmland in the three rivers plain, China

The presence of trace metals (TMs) in agricultural soil has garnered considerable attention due to their potential migration into crops, posing a significant risk to human health. In this study, we examined the concentrations of eight trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the soil and investigated various soil physicochemical characteristics in the Three Rivers Plain region, China. The assessment of the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) for the mean concentration of all trace metals indicated that the soils were generally free from significant TM pollution. However, a noteworthy finding emerged in relation to Hg, where the maximum Igeo value suggested moderate pollution levels. Kriging prediction results further indicated that approximately 1.55% of the study area might be impacted by Hg pollution. Moreover, it is prudent to direct attention towards Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Ni, as their Igeo values revealed that the region with the highest concentrations of these metals ranged from unpolluted to moderately polluted. This study employed a comprehensive approach, utilizing the Self-Organizing Map (SOM), Kriging spatial distribution, and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model to identify the sources of TMs in agricultural soil. The results unveiled that the primary contributors to TM presence were the natural parental materials, alongside industrial activities such as coal mining and coal plant operations, as well as agricultural practices. These findings provide foundational insights for future management strategies in the Three Rivers Plain, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity and promote sustainability.

Transcriptomic analysis revealing the molecular response to arsenic stress in desert Eremostachys moluccelloides Bunge

The saline, alkaline environment of arid soils is conducive to the diffusion of the metalloid arsenic (As). Desert plants in this area are of great ecological importance and practical value. However, there are few studies on the mechanism of arsenic action in desert plants. Therefore, in this study, Eremostachys moluccelloides Bunge was treated with different concentrations of As2O5 [As(V)] to analyze the physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic changes of its roots and leaves and to explore the molecular mechanism of its response to As(Ⅴ) stress. The activities of catalase, superoxidase, peroxidase, and the contents of malondialdehyde and proline in roots and leaves first increased and then decreased under the As(Ⅴ) stress of different concentrations. The content of As was higher in roots than in leaves, and the As content was positively correlated with As(Ⅴ) stress concentration. In the differentially expressed gene analysis, the key enzymes of the oxidative stress response in roots and leaves were significantly enriched in the GO classification. In the KEGG pathway, genes related to the abscisic acid signal transduction pathway were co-enriched and up-regulated in roots and leaves. The related genes in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway were significantly enriched and down-regulated only in roots. In addition, the transcription factors NAC, HB-HD-ZIP, and NF-Y were up-regulated in roots and leaves. These results suggest that the higher the As(V) stress concentration, the more As is taken up by roots and leaves of E. molucelloides Bunge. In addition to causing greater oxidative damage, this may interfere with the production of secondary metabolites. Moreover, it may improve As(V) tolerance by regulating abscisic acid and transcription factors. The results will deepen our understanding of the molecular mechanism of As(Ⅴ) response in E. moluccelloides Bunge, lay the foundation for developing and applying desert plants, and provide new ideas for the phytoremediation of As pollution in arid areas.

Polyamine-producing bacteria inhibit the absorption of Cd by spinach and alter the bacterial community composition of rhizosphere soil

Polyamines (PAs) are small aliphatic nitrogenous bases with strong biological activity that participate in plant stress response signaling and the alleviation of damage from stress. Herein, the effects of the PA-producing bacterium Bacillus megaterium N3 and PAs on the immobilization of Cd and inhibition of Cd absorption by spinach and the underlying mechanisms were studied. A solution test showed that strain N3 secreted spermine and spermidine in the presence of Cd. Both strain N3 and the PAs (spermine+spermidine) immobilized Cd and increased the pH of the solution. Untargeted metabolomics results showed that strain N3 secreted PAs, N1-acetylspermidine, 3-indolepropionic acid, indole-3-acetaldehyde, cysteinyl-gamma-glutamate, and choline, which correlated with plant growth promotion and Cd immobilization. A pot experiment showed that rhizosphere soil inoculation with strain N3 and PAs improved spinach dry weight and reduced spinach Cd absorption compared with the control. These positive effects were likely due to the increase in rhizosphere soil pH and NH4+-N and PA contents, which can be attributed primarily to Cd immobilization. Moreover, inoculation with strain N3 more effectively inhibited the absorption of Cd by spinach than spraying PAs, mainly because strain N3 enabled a better relative abundance of bacteria (Microvirga, Pedobacter, Bacillus, Brevundimonas, Pseudomonas, Serratia, Devosid, and Aminobacter), that have been reported to have the ability to resist heavy metals and produce PAs. Strain N3 regulated the structure of rhizosphere functional bacterial communities and inhibited Cd uptake by spinach. These results provide a theoretical basis for the prevention of heavy metal absorption by vegetables using PA-producing bacteria.

Effect of polylactic acid microplastics and lead on the growth and physiological characteristics of buckwheat

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are common, often co-existing pollutants, that threaten crop growth and productivity worldwide. We analysed the adsorption of lead ions (Pb2+) to polylactic acid MPs (PLA-MPs) and their single factor and combined effects on tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum L. Gaertn.) in hydroponics by measuring changes in the growth characteristics, antioxidant enzyme activities and Pb2+ uptake of buckwheat in response to PLA-MPs and Pb2+. PLA-MPs adsorbed Pb2+, and the better fitting second-order adsorption model implied that Pb2+ was adsorbed by chemisorption. However, the similar Pb2+ contents in the plants treated with Pb2+ only and those treated with the combined PLA-MPs-Pb2+ suggested that the adsorption played no role in the uptake of Pb2+. Low concentrations of PLA-MPs promoted shoot length. At high concentrations of both PLA-MPs and Pb2+, buckwheat growth was inhibited, and leaf peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were higher than in the control. No significant differences were observed in seedling growth between exposure to Pb2+ only and combined exposure to PLA-MPs with Pb2+, implying that PLA-MPs did not increase the toxicity of Pb2+ at macroscopic level. POD activity was higher and chlorophyll content was lower with PLA-MPs in the low Pb2+ dose treatments, suggesting that PLA-MPs may increase the toxicity of naturally occurring Pb2+. However, the conclusions must be verified in controlled experiments in natural soil conditions over the whole cultivation period of buckwheat.

Bacterial seed endophyte and abiotic factors influence cadmium accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa) along the Yangtze River area

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice (Oryza sativa) is particularly problematic due to its high risk to human health. Investigating the hidden roles of seed endophytes of rice in influencing Cd accumulation is essential to comprehensively understand the effects of biotic and abiotic factors to food security. Here, the content of Cd in soils and rice (Huanghuazhan) seeds from 19 sites along the Yangtze River exhibited considerable differences. From a biotic perspective, we observed the dominant endophytic bacteria, Stenotrophomonas (7.25 %), contribute to Cd control of rice (below 0.2 mg kg-1). Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis further suggested that Enterobacteriaceae (15.48 %), altitude and pH were found to be the strong variables that might reduce the Cd uptake of rice. In contrast, Cytophagaceae (0.58 %), latitude and mean annual air pressure had the opposite effect. In pot experiments, after respectively inoculating the isolated endophytic bacteria Stenotrophomonas T4 and Enterobacter R1, N1 (f_Enterobacteriaceae), the Cd contents in shoot decreased by 47.6 %, 21.9 % and 33.0 % compared to controls. The distribution of Cd resistant genes (e.g., czcABC, nccAB, cznA) of Stenotrophomonas, Enterobacteriaceaea and Cytophagaceae further suggested their distinct manners in influencing the Cd uptake of rice. Overall, this study provides new insights into the food security threatened by globally widespread Cd pollution.

Procyanidin B2 alleviates uterine toxicity induced by cadmium exposure in rats: The effect of oxidative stress, inflammation, and gut microbiota

Environmental exposure to hazardous materials causes enormous socioeconomic problems due to its deleterious impacts on human beings, agriculture and animal husbandry. As an important hazardous material, cadmium can promote uterine oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to reproductive toxicity. Antioxidants have been reported to attenuate the reproductive toxicity associated with cadmium exposure. In this study, we investigated the potential protective effect of procyanidin oligosaccharide B2 (PC-B2) and gut microbiota on uterine toxicity induced by cadmium exposure in rats. The results showed that the expression levels of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were reduced in utero. Proinflammatory cytokines (including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β and interleukin-6), the NLRP3 inflammasome, Caspase-1 and pro-IL-1β were all involved in inflammatory-mediated uterine injury. PC-B2 prevented CdCl2-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in uterine tissue by increasing antioxidant enzymes and reducing proinflammatory cytokines. Additionally, PC-B2 significantly reduced cadmium deposition in the uterus, possibly through its significant increase in MT1, MT2, and MT3 mRNA expression. Interestingly, PC-B2 protected the uterus from CdCl2 damage by increasing the abundance of intestinal microbiota, promoting beneficial microbiota, and inhibiting harmful microbiota. This study provides novel mechanistic insights into the toxicity of environmental cadmium exposure and indicates that PC-B2 could be used in the prevention of cadmium exposure-induced uterine toxicity.

Copper and cadmium co-contamination affects soil bacterial taxonomic and functional attributes in paddy soils

Microorganisms inhabiting heavy metal-contaminated soils have evolved specific metabolic capabilities to survive, which has the potential for effective bioremediation. However, the ecological consequence of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) on bacterial taxonomic and functional attributes of rice field remains unclear. Here, we selected paddy soils along a polluted river in southern China to evaluate the role of Cu and Cd contaminant fractions in regulating bacterial co-occurrence patterns. We also assessed the effects of these heavy metal fractions on the relative abundance of functional genes using shotgun metagenomic analysis. Soil Cu and Cd concentrations in paddy soils gradually decreased from upstream to downstream of the river, and had a greater impact on bacterial communities and metabolic potentials than soil general properties. Soil Cu and Cd contamination led to drastic changes in the cumulative relative abundance of ecological modules in bacterial co-occurrence networks. Bacteria associated with AD3, HSB_OF53-F07 (both belonging to Chloroflexi), Rokubacteriales, and Nitrospira were identified as tolerant to Cu and Cd contamination. The Cu and Cd contaminant fractions were positively correlated with the genes involved in metal resistance, carbon (C) fixation, nitrification, and denitrification, but negatively correlated with the genes related to nitrogen (N) fixation. These results indicated that soil Cu and Cd pollution not only enriched metal resistant genes, but also affected genes related to microbial C and N cycling. This is critical for facilitating microbiome bioremediation of metal-contaminated paddy soils.
