Simple and sensitive determination of vitamin A and E in the milk and egg yolk samples by using dispersive solid phase extraction with newly synthesized polymeric material

Rapid extraction of BTEX in water and milk samples based on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes by dispersive homogenized-micro-solid phase extraction

An advanced synthesis based on the phenylalanine (Phe) and task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL) functionalized on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Phe/TSIL@MWCNTs), was used to extract benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene (BTEX) from cow's milk, powdered milk, and farm water samples. The BTEX was efficiently extracted by ultrasound-assisted dispersive homogenized-micro-solid phase extraction (USA-DH-µ-SPE) between 95.1% and 103.4%. By procedure, 50 mg of Phe/TSIL@MWCNTs was added to 0.2 mL of acetone and injected into 10 mL of the samples. The upper aqueous solution was vacuumed, the vial heated to 80 °C, and the BTEX desorbed in the vial. Then, using a Hamilton syringe, 1-20 µL of gas in the headspace vial was determined by injecting it into the gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The linear range, LOD, and LOQ for BTEX in milk and water samples were obtained at 0.05-500 µg L^-1, 15 ng L^-1, and 50 ng L^-1, respectively (r = 0.9997, RSD% = 2.27).

Nickel hydroxide nanoflower-based dispersive solid-phase extraction of copper from water matrix

In this work, a dispersive solid-phase extraction method based on Ni(OH)₂ nanoflowers (Ni(OH)₂-NFs-DSPE) was developed to separate and preconcentrate copper ions from tap water samples for determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Ni(OH)₂-NFs was synthesized using a homogeneous precipitation technique and used as sorbent for copper preconcentration. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the synthesized sorbent. All experimental variables were carefully optimized to achieve a high enhancement factor of 107.5-folds with respect to the detection sensitivity of the conventional FAAS. The proposed method's analytical parameters including LOD, LOQ, and linear range were determined as 1.33 μg/L, 4.42 μg/L, and 3.0-40 μg/L, respectively. To assess the applicability and reliability of the developed method, optimal conditions were applied to tap water samples and satisfactory percent recoveries (94-103%) were obtained for the samples spiked at 20 and 30 μg/L. This validated the accuracy and feasibility of the developed method to real samples. The developed method can be described as a simple, efficient, and rapid analytical approach for the accurate determination of trace copper ions in water samples.

Simultaneously speciation and determination of manganese (II) and (VII) ions in water, food, and vegetable samples based on immobilization of N-acetylcysteine on multi-walled carbon nanotubes

A novel method based on the immobilization of N-acetylcysteine on chloro-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs@NAC) was used for the speciation of manganese ions [Mn (II) and Mn(VII)] in water samples. Also, the total manganese (TMn) in vegetables and food samples was determined by the AT-FAAS. By ultrasound-assisted-dispersive ionic liquid trap micro solid-phase extraction (UA-DILT-μ-SPE), the Mn (II)/Mn(VII) ions were extracted in the presence of MWCNTs@NAC for 50 mL of water samples at a pH of 6.5 and 3.0, respectively. The adsorption capacity of MWCNTs@NAC for Mn(II) and Mn(VII) ions was obtained at 146.7 mg g^-1 and 138.8 mg g^-1, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limits (LOD), linear range (LR), and enrichment factor (EF) for Mn(II) and Mn(VII) ions were obtained (0.12 μg L^-1; 0.14 μg L^-1), (0.48-36 μg L^-1; 0.55-38.1 μg L^-1) and (100.2; 94.5), respectively. The proposed methodology was successfully validated by the CRM samples.

A rapid and environmentally friendly method for determination of parabens preservatives in flavors by supercritical fluid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

A rapid method for determination of parabens preservatives (methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, isopropyl paraben, propyl paraben, isobutyl paraben, and butyl paraben) in flavors was established by using supercritical fluid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry combined with dispersive solid phase extraction. After adding methanol and primary secondary amine to the sample simultaneously, high extraction efficiency and good sample cleanup could be obtained by simple shaking. Parabens were well separated on a Chiralpak IG-3 column in 6 min by gradient elution. Recoveries from spiked blank samples at 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 mg/kg were determined to be 88.3-106.6%with relative standard deviations less than 8.0%. All analytes achieved good linear relation (r≥0.999 2). The limits of detection for all analytes ranged from 0.03 to 0.09 mg/kg and the limits of quantification from 0.11 to 0.31 mg/kg, respectively. A total of 20 actual samples were successfully analyzed by taking the proposed method. Characterization of Nutritional and Bioactive Compound in Three Genotypes of Mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruiz and Pavón) from Different Agroecological Areas in Puno

Bioactive compounds and nutritional characterization in three genotypes of mashua tubers (Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruiz and Pavón) from different agroecological areas of the Peruvian highlands (3747 at 3888 meters above sea level) were studied. The studied genotypes from different agroecological areas significantly differed for vitamins, amino acids, and bioactive compounds. However, the nutritional characteristics of yellow, purple, and yellow-purple mashua remained unaffected. Its tubers were shown to be important sources of protein and fiber. The nutritional analysis revealed high phosphorus and potassium values, as well as considerable amounts of vitamin C. The amounts of total free amino acids in the genotypes ranged from $2.73\pm 0.450$  mg/g dry matter (DM) to $6.825\pm 0.450$  mg/g DM. Important total anthocyanins, total flavonoids, total phenolics, tannin content, and antioxidant activity values were obtained from purple genotype. Unexploited colored mashua tubers are proposed as a valuable natural source of phenolics and anthocyanins with high antioxidant activity.

Vitamin E in foodstuff: Nutritional, analytical, and food technology aspects

Vitamin E is a group of isoprenoid chromanols with different biological activities. It comprises eight oil-soluble compounds: four tocopherols, namely, α-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols; and four tocotrienols, namely, α-, β-, γ, and δ-tocotrienols. Vitamin E isomers are well-known for their antioxidant activity, gene-regulation effects, and anti-inflammatory and nephroprotective properties. Considering that vitamin E is exclusively synthesized by photosynthetic organisms, animals can only acquire it through their diet. Plant-based food is the primary source of vitamin E; hence, oils, nuts, fruits, and vegetables with high contents of vitamin E are mostly consumed after processing, including industrial processes and home-cooking, which involve vitamin E profile and content alteration during their preparation. Accordingly, it is essential to identify the vitamin E content and profile in foodstuff to match daily intake requirements. This review summarizes recent advances in vitamin E chemistry, metabolism and metabolites, current knowledge on their contents and profiles in raw and processed plant foods, and finally, their modern developments in analytical methods.

Vitamin E as an essential micronutrient for human health: Common, novel, and unexplored dietary sources

Vitamin E comprises a group of vitamers that includes tocopherols and tocotrienols. They occur in four homologues according to the number and position of methyl groups attached to the chromanol ring. Vitamin E, a liposoluble antioxidant, may participate as an adjuvant in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, neurological, and aging-related diseases. Furthermore, vitamin E has applications in the food industry as a natural additive. In this contribution, the most recent information on the dietary sources of vitamin E, including common, novel, and unexplored sources, is presented. Common edible oils, such as those of corn, olive, palm, rice bran, and peanut, represent the most prominent sources of vitamin E. However, specialty and underutilized oils such as those obtained from tree nuts, fruit seeds, and by-products, emerge as novel sources of this important micronutrient. Complementary studies should examine the tocotrienol content of vitamin E dietary sources to better understand the different biological functions of these vitamers.

Lipid-soluble vitamins from dairy products: Extraction, purification, and analytical techniques

Milk and dairy products are considered as essential sources of lipid-soluble vitamins (LSVs) for human nutrition. Due to the lower concentrations, complexity, and instability of LSVs during extraction, their quantification remains challenging. This review focus on advances in the extraction and quantification of LSVs from different dairy products. Saponification, and liquid-liquid (LLE), solid-phase (SPE), and supercritical fluid (SFE) extraction methods, as well as dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, are the most common techniques. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (LC-MS) has unique advantages for LSVs determination and quantification due to its high sensitivity and specificity.

Collaborative compounding of metal-organic frameworks for dispersive solid-phase extraction HPLC-MS/MS determination of tetracyclines in honey

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a sort of dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) material, has shown considerable prospects in the pretreatment of food, biological and other complex samples. Herein, we developed a method for compounding MOFs for d-SPE and trace determination of tetracyclines (TCs) in honey. When the compounding ratio of MIL-101 (Cr), MIL-100 (Fe) and MIL-53 (Al) was 7:1:2, adsorption-extraction was effective. Followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), the limits of detection were 0.073-0.435 ng/g and the limits of quantitation ranged from 0.239 to 1.449 ng/g for oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline and doxycycline. The method was applied to four kinds of honey samples with recoveries from 88.1% to 126.2%. The compounding of MOFs provides a strategy for purification and multi-target extraction from complex food matrices by d-SPE.

N-doped mesoporous carbon as a new sorbent for ultrasonic-assisted dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction of 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol, the biomarkers of exposure to naphthalene, from urine samples

This study aimed to optimize a new sample preparation method using N-doped mesoporous carbon sorbent for simultaneous measurement of 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol, the biomarkers of exposure to naphthalene. The samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography supplied with ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV). N-doped mesoporous carbon sorbent was obtained via the hard template procedure. The synthesized nanosorbent was then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and elemental analysis (CHN). The effective factors in the extraction of the studied biomarkers were examined by the Box-Behnken (BBD) methodology. Regarding the optimum conditions, the sketched calibration curve for naphthols was linear in the concentration levels of 1-600 µg L^-1 for human urine samples. The accuracy and reproducibility of the introduced method were determined using the relative recovery (RR %) and relative standard deviation (RSD %) tests on the fortified urine samples. RR% and RSD% were found to be 97.0-101.2% and 3.1-9.0%, respectively. The calculated method detection limit of the optimized procedure was 0.3 µg L^-1 and 0.5 µg L^-1 for 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol, respectively.

Recent Techniques in Nutrient Analysis for Food Composition Database

Food composition database (FCD) provides the nutritional composition of foods. Reliable and up-to date FCD is important in many aspects of nutrition, dietetics, health, food science, biodiversity, plant breeding, food industry, trade and food regulation. FCD has been used extensively in nutrition labelling, nutritional analysis, research, regulation, national food and nutrition policy. The choice of method for the analysis of samples for FCD often depends on detection capability, along with ease of use, speed of analysis and low cost. Sample preparation is the most critical stage in analytical method development. Samples can be prepared using numerous techniques; however it should be applicable for a wide range of analytes and sample matrices. There are quite a number of significant improvements on sample preparation techniques in various food matrices for specific analytes highlighted in the literatures. Improvements on the technology used for the analysis of samples by specific instrumentation could provide an alternative to the analyst to choose for their laboratory requirement. This review provides the reader with an overview of recent techniques that can be used for sample preparation and instrumentation for food analysis which can provide wide options to the analysts in providing data to their FCD.

Sample treatment based on molecularly imprinted polymers for the analysis of veterinary drugs in food samples: a review

The use of veterinary drugs in medical treatments and in the livestock industry is a recurrent practice. When applied in subtherapeutic doses over prolonged times, they can also act as growth promoters. However, residues of these substances in foods present a risk to human health. Their analysis is thus important and can help guarantee consumer safety. The critical point in each analytical technique is the sample treatment and the analytical matrix complexity. The present manuscript summarizes the development, type of synthesis, characterization, and application of molecularly imprinted polymers in the separation, identification, and quantification techniques for the determination of veterinary drug residues in food samples in extraction, clean-up, isolation, and pre-concentration systems. Synthesized sorbents with specific recognition properties improve the interactions between the analytes and the polymeric sorbents, providing better analysis conditions and advantages in comparison with commercial sorbents in terms of high selectivity, analytical sensitivity, easy performance, and low cost analysis.
