Occurrence of trace metals in fish from South Italy: Assessment risk to consumer’s health

Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks associated with the consumption of fishes contaminated with heavy metals from Manzala Lake, Egypt

Manzala Lake was sampled to assess the concentrations and possible ecological risks of heavy metals. The mean heavy metal levels in the muscles of Nile tilapia, Flathead grey mullets and African catfish were 0.01, 0.15 and 0.29 mg/kg, respectively, for mercury; 3.16, 4.25 and 4.74 mg/kg for arsenic; 1.01, 0.87 and 0.95 mg/kg for lead; and 0.05, 0.12 and 0.06 mg/kg for cadmium. The levels of heavy metals exceeded their maximum permissible limits in most samples. The EDIs of some metals were higher than their PTDIs or BMDLs. The THQs and TTHQs from metal intake were >1 for Hg and Cd. In addition, the TCR values of As in all fish species were higher than 1.0 × 10-4 indicating a potential health risks from consumption of fish species which need strict hygienic procedures to prevent fish contamination with heavy metals and ensure that their levels did not exceed the maximum permissible limits.

Review of the Terminology, Approaches, and Formulations Used in the Guidelines on Quantitative Risk Assessment of Chemical Hazards in Food

This paper reviews the published terminology, mathematical models, and the possible approaches used to characterise the risk of foodborne chemical hazards, particularly pesticides, metals, mycotoxins, acrylamide, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results confirmed the wide variability of the nomenclature used, e.g., 28 different ways of referencing exposure, 13 of cancer risk, or 9 of slope factor. On the other hand, a total of 16 equations were identified to formulate all the risk characterisation parameters of interest. Therefore, the present study proposes a terminology and formulation for some risk characterisation parameters based on the guidelines of international organisations and the literature review. The mathematical model used for non-genotoxic hazards is a ratio in all cases. However, the authors used the probability of cancer or different ratios, such as the margin of exposure (MOE) for genotoxic hazards. For each effect studied per hazard, the non-genotoxic effect was mostly studied in pesticides (79.73%), the genotoxic effect was mostly studied in PAHs (71.15%), and both effects were mainly studied in metals (59.4%). The authors of the works reviewed generally opted for a deterministic approach, although most of those who assessed the risk for mycotoxins or the ratio and risk for acrylamide used the probabilistic approach.

Heavy metal concentrations in various tissues of two fish species from Damsa Dam Lake (Turkey) and associated health risk assessment

PURPOSE OF REVIEW AND METHOD

In this study, indicate the average or range of 10 heavy metal concentrations in muscle, gills and liver of two fish species (Squalius pursakensis and Cyprinus carpio) living in the Damsa Dam Lake (Turkey) was examined in relation to fish gender and size. Inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry was used to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals. The average contents of the metals in S. pursakensis muscle samples were 0.877, 9.285, 0.614, 0.488, 8.190, 0.155, 0.015, 0.010, 0.218, 0.009 mg/kg for Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, As, Cd, Co, Cr and Pb respectively. On the other hand, the average contents of the metals in C. carpio muscle samples were 0.673, 8.001, 0.367, 0.435, 6.107, 0.188, 0.007, 0.007, 0.371, 0.012 mg/kg for Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, As, Cd, Co, Cr and Pb respectively. In addition, human health risks were evaluated considering the estimated daily intake of heavy metals in adults. The target hazard quotient, hazard index and carcinogenic risk values were determined based on the frequency of fish consumption for the population living in the region.

RESULT AND CONCLUSION

The highest quantities of all heavy metals were determined in the gills and liver of the fish species. The levels of most heavy metals in tissues did not differ significantly between both fish species. Only a few heavy metals in the tissues of both fish species demonstrated significant associations with fish length or weight. In terms of the levels of most of the heavy metals in the tissues, there weren't any significant differences between the male and the female fish. The estimated daily intakes of all of the heavy metals were lower than the reference doses. The values of the target hazard quotient and the hazard index were found to be below 1 and the values regarding carcinogenic risk were assessed to be within or lower than the permissible levels. Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and inorganic As values assessed in the muscle tissues of fish were found below the values acceptable by national and international institutions. These results proved that the examined fish species can be consumed safely.

Elucidating the effects of heavy metals contamination on vital organ of fish and migratory birds found at fresh water ecosystem

Heavy metal pollution in aquatic environments threatens marine life and lowers the quality of freshwater supplies. This research aimed to quantify the heavy metal concentration in fish, avian tissue, and water of the Mangla reservoir. Concentrations of heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Cr, and Pb were determined in five vital organs of six species of fishes (Cirrhinus cirrhosis, Catla catla, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Wallagu attu, Cyprinus carpio, Sperata seenghala) and five species of migratory birds (Anas strepera, Aythya ferina, Anas platyrhynchos, Anas crecca, Anas clypeata) and water of Mangla dam. Heavy metal concentration was observed with AAS' help after the samples' complete chemical digestion. The average concentration of these metals in water samples was higher than the mean values in fish and birds. Heavy metals damaged fish and birds in the same order: Cd > Cu > Cr > Pb. The results of this research will hopefully prompt further consideration on the dangers of heavy metal contamination in freshwater ecosystem.

Metal Load of Potentially Toxic Elements in Tuna (Thunnus albacares)-Food Safety Aspects

The consumption of marine fishes has a positive effect on a consumer's health; however, it poses a potential risk due to their level of heavy metals in their body. Heavy metals can be naturally found in the environment, but their concentration can be increased with anthropogenic activities. Samples of tuna (Thunnus albacares) were collected at a fishery market. The potentially toxic elements (arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury) were determined with a validated method in the flesh of fish using inductively plasma optical emission spectrometry after microwave digestion. Generally, the average concentration of them was below the official limit values regulated by the European Union, except for lead. Based on the concentrations of arsenic (inorganic derivates: 0.05 ± 0.02 mg/kg) and cadmium (0.03 ± 0.01 mg/kg) in the tuna fish samples, and their calculated EDI values (As: 0.03-0.09 µg/kg/day; Cd: 0.05-0.07 µg/kg/day), the investigated food could be declared safe for human consumption. Generally, mercury content was below the official regulated limit, and the calculated EDI value was below the dietary reference value (0.3 μg/kg/day) in most of the samples (90%), exceeding it only in two samples (0.69 and 0.82 μg/kg/day); thus, they may not be harmful to the consumer. The concentration of lead above the official maximum limit (0.30 mg/kg) in 40% of tuna samples (0.30-1.59 mg/kg), as well as the exceeding of the dietary reference value for lead (adult: 0.16 μg/kg/day; children: 0.26 μg/kg/day) based on the calculated EDI values (0.28-1.49 μg/kg/day), draw attention to the importance of environmental pollution and the protection of consumers' health.

Extraction of heavy metals by cooking/preserving of seafood, tuna and poultry from Romania - A source of contamination with heavy metals

The study aims to provide evidence regarding the impact of the extraction of heavy metals into food products through conventional cooking and preserving of foods like seafood, tuna, and poultry. The optical emission spectrometric technique with an inductively coupled plasma source (ICP-OES) was employed to determine trace levels of heavy metals in the muscle tissue of seafood, fish meat, tuna species, poultry, and turkey that was collected raw, cooked, frozen, and preserved. Conventional cooking increased the concentration of some heavy metals (Al, Sn, Fe, Co, Ti, and Mn) by more than 100.00%, while preserving the mussels promoted the extraction and accumulation of metals such as Al, Fe, Sn, Zn, Cu, Hg, and As, resulting in an increase in concentration of more than 180.00%.

Trace elements in Foodstuffs from the Mediterranean Basin-Occurrence, Risk Assessment, Regulations, and Prevention strategies: A review

Trace elements (TEs) are chemical compounds that naturally occur in the earth's crust and in living organisms at low concentrations. Anthropogenic activities can significantly increase the level of TEs in the environment and finally enter the food chain. Toxic TEs like cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury have no positive role in a biological system and can cause harmful effects on human health. Ingestion of contaminated food is a typical route of TEs intake by humans. Recent data about the occurrence of TEs in food available in the Mediterranean countries are considered in this review. Analytical methods are also discussed. Furthermore, a discussion of existing international agency regulations will be given. The risk associated with the dietary intake of TEs was estimated by considering consumer exposure and threshold values such as Benchmark dose lower confidence limit and provisional tolerable weekly intake established by the European Food Safety Authority and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, respectively. Finally, several remediation approaches to minimize TE contamination in foodstuffs were discussed including chemical, biological, biotechnological, and nanotechnological methods. The results of this study proved the occurrence of TEs contamination at high levels in vegetables and fish from some Mediterranean countries. Lead and cadmium are more abundant in foodstuffs than other toxic trace elements. Geographical variations in TE contamination of food crops clearly appear, with a greater risk in developing countries. There is still a need for the regular monitoring of these toxic element levels in food items to ensure consumer protection.

Trace metal exposure and human health consequences through consumption of market-available Oreochromis niloticus (L.) in Bangladesh

Using Oreochromis niloticus (L.), commonly known as tilapia, as a model, this study evaluated the exposure of trace metal and their risk assessment on human health. In addition, the status of amino acids, fatty acids, vital elements, and their benefits is also studied. Estimating the nutrient composition of fish muscle is necessary to ensure that it meets the requirements for human health, food regulations, and commercial specifications. The species examined contained appreciable concentrations of amino acids, fatty acid content, and minerals, suggesting that the fish species could be a good source of protein, fat, and minerals. Hazardous heavy metals were found to be lower compared to their corresponding maximum tolerable limits. The order of trace metals is Zn (22,709 µg/kg) > Fe (19,878 µg/kg) > Cu (1261 µg /kg) > Mn (1228 µg/kg) > Cr (474 µg/kg) > Ni (152 µg/kg) As (318 µg /kg) > Pb (281 µg/kg) > Co (24 µg /kg) > Cd (13 µg/kg) > Hg (5 µg/kg); a number of health-related indices, including estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI), as well as carcinogenic risk (CR) indices for adult and children, were calculated to evaluate the human health hazard of the heavy metals. The THQ and HI of heavy metals for tilapia are lower than 1, posing a non-carcinogenic threat to human health due to the biomagnifications of these deadly poisonous metals. Principal component, cluster, and correlation analyses delineated the common probabilistic sources of metal contamination origin and significant inter-parameter associations. Although no human health risks for the consumption of tilapia was found, more attention must be paid for the monitoring of Oreochromis niloticus before entering the market.

Health risk assessment and differential distribution of Arsenic and metals in organs of Urophycis brasiliensis a commercial fish from Southwestern Atlantic coast

The concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn were analyzed in muscle, gills, and liver of Urophycis brasiliensis from two Southwestern Atlantic catch areas (Brazil and Argentina). Additionally, the health risk of general and fishermen populations through fish consumption was estimated. The gills showed the highest concentrations of most of the elements, followed by the liver. With the exception of As, the muscle was the organ with the lowest concentrations of most elements. Levels of arsenic in muscle of U. brasiliensis were exceeded the maximum permissible levels for human consumption recommended by local and international guidelines. The target hazard quotients (THQs) and the carcinogenic risk (CR) showed no risk for individual and all elements. These results highlight the importance of arsenic speciation in U. brasiliensis muscle in order to generate more reliable risk estimates.

Bioaccumulation and human health risk assessment of some heavy metals in sediments, Sparus aurata and Salicornia europaea in Güllük Lagoon, the south of Aegean Sea

In the current study, it was aimed to determine the sediment in Sparus aurata (Linnaeus 1758) tissues and Salicornia europaea L. Cu, Zn Fe, Hg, Cd, Pb and Mn concentration distributions in Güllük Lagoon which is located in the south of Aegean Sea and under the influence of anthropogenic activities by means of metal pollution and health indices and to investigate the effects of these metals on public health. The concentration range of Cu, Zn, Fe, Hg, Cd, Pb and Mn in sediment samples was determined as 12.16-26.00, 1.62-2.03, 7.77-8.36, 7.52-16.15, 0.071-0.40, 7.99-13.74 and 12.11-12.63 mg kg^-1, respectively. Cu and Hg concentrations in sediment were found to be higher than sediment quality guidelines standards. In addition, according to the enrichment factor (EF), Hg, Cd and Cu were found to show above moderate enrichment. Cu, Zn, Fe, Hg, Cd and Mn concentrations in S. aurata muscle tissue were 1.31 ± 2.30, 1.01 ± 0.24, 3.43 ± 0.75, 2.79 ± 0.85, 0.01 ± 0.01 and 1.80 ± 1.12 mg kg^-1, respectively. S. europaea heavy metals (HMs) concentrations were determined as Cu = 10.97 ± 3.20, Zn = 0.74 ± 0.62, Fe = 5.69 ± 0.22, Hg = 9.62 ± 8.84, Cd = 0.53 ± 0.33, Pb = 0.22 ± 0.26 and Mn = 8.61 ± 0.14 mg kg^-1. It was seen that Hg in S. aurata muscle tissue and Hg in S. europaea concentrations exceeded the limit values determined for consumption purposes. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values were found to be < 1 for S. aurata and S. europaea. When all these results were considered, it was determined that the metals that could pose a potential ecological and health risk were Hg, Cd and Cu in the study area.

Understanding the role of ecological factors affecting mercury concentrations in the blue shark (Prionace glauca)

Human activities have increased environmental concentrations of pollutants in marine ecosystems, which can cause harmful effects on marine organisms. Top predators are particularly susceptible to bioaccumulation and biomagnification of pollutants through the food webs and are described as good sentinels for monitoring metal accumulation such mercury (Hg) in marine ecosystems. However, to be used as sentinels, it is important to understand the main ecological factors affecting the concentrations of pollutants in these organisms. In the present study, our main objective was to investigate the effect of body size, sex, trophic niche and geographic area on Hg concentrations in a top marine top predator, the blue shark (Prionace glauca). We analysed Hg in muscle samples from male and female blue sharks of different body sizes collected from the waters surrounding the Canary Islands and the South of Portugal, in the Atlantic Ocean, to waters of the north-western Mediterranean Sea. The results revealed that the sampling area was an important factor explaining Hg concentrations, showing higher values in the Mediterranean blue sharks. We also found a positive relationship between Hg concentrations and body size of blue sharks, indicating a bioaccumulation process of this pollutant in relation with body size. Moreover, we observed a relationship between Hg concentrations and δ¹³C values, a proxy of the use of inshore-offshore marine habitats. Individuals with depleted δ¹³C values that potentially foraged in offshore waters showed higher Hg values. Importantly, most of the analysed blue sharks presented Hg concentrations that exceeded the limits established by the European Union for human consumption.

Wild fish and seafood species in the western Mediterranean Sea with low safe mercury concentrations

A total of 1345 specimens belonging to 58 different species of wild fish and seafood from the western Mediterranean Sea were analyzed to assess total mercury levels and to estimate which species meet the EU recommendations for human consumption (0.5 μg g^-1 ww) in all cases. All fish species were caught off the Mediterranean coasts and intended for human consumption. All specimens were collected from local markets located in Spain, Italy and France that sell fish caught by local fishermen (Eivissa, Menorca, Mallorca, Alacant, L'Ampolla, Ametlla de Mar, Marseille, Genoa, Civitavecchia, Alghero) at different time periods. Mercury concentrations were measured by thermal decomposition-gold amalgamator-atomic absorption spectrometry. Only thirteen species were found that did not exceed 0.5 μg g^-1 ww in any specimen analyzed. These safe species were sardines (Sardina pilchardus), anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus), blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), picarel (Spicara smaris), blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), pearly razorfish (Xyrichtys novacula), surmullet (Mullus surmuletus), painted comber (Serranus scriba), brown meagre (Sciaena umbra), salema (Sarpa salpa), common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and squid (Loligo vulgaris). These species occupy different trophic levels, have different lengths and average weights, but show a low mercury concentration than others living in the same environments. Potential human consumption of these species as sole source of fish would imply estimated weekly intakes representing between 49% and 70% of the recommended provisional tolerable weekly intake of methylmercury in the worst case. Health authorities should pay specific attention to species that do not meet EU thresholds and make appropriate precautionary health recommendations, especially for pregnant women and children.

Levels of metals and elements in tissues of fish species in the Kızılırmak River (Turkey) and assessment of health risks and nutritional benefits

Although the Kızılırmak River, the longest river in Turkey, is home to many fish species, there are a few studies reporting metal levels in fish in the river. The contents of 17 metals and elements (MEs) in various tissues of three fish species and surface water from the river were investigated. Significant differences in the ME levels among tissues were recorded, and the highest levels of most MEs were recorded in the gills and liver. The results revealed that correlations between MEs in tissues and fish size were not clear and consistent. Among the MEs, P (6058-109489) and Zn (933-47556) had the highest bioconcentration factor values. The levels of As and Cd in the river water exceeded water quality criteria. Health risk assessment methods (Target Hazard Quotient, Estimated Daily Intake and Lifetime Carcinogenic Risk) indicated that consumption of the studied fish species is safe. It was estimated that a weekly consumption of 490 g of C. gibelio, or 350 g of C. carpio or 280 g of T. tinca would not cause any health risks. Furthermore, it was found that fish species would provide significant benefits in terms of intake of nutrients such as P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. These findings revealed that nutritional benefits from consumption of fish species outweigh the health risks posed by metals in fish.

Dietary exposure assessment of selected trace elements in eleven commercial fish species from the Missouri market

Fish is an important source of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and polyunsaturated fatty acids for nutrition adequacy. However, fish is a major link to dietary metal exposure in humans. This study describes the content of eight trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg) in eleven commercial fish species from the Missouri market and evaluated the health risks of fish muscle consumption in the adult population. Total mercury (THg) in muscle was quantified by AAS and ICP-OES was used for other elements. The recovery rates of elements from DOLT-5 reference material ranged from 83% to 106%. Of all the 239 fish samples analyzed, trace element concentrations (mg/kg wet weight) in muscle were in the following ranges: As < LOD—17.5; Cd: 0.016–0.27; Cr: 0.023–0.63; Cu: 0.034–1.06; Ni: <LOD—1.05; Pb: <LOD—0.82; Zn: 0.99–6.18; and THg: 0.0001–0.27. The levels of As, Cd, Cr, and Pb, in some samples representing several species, were above the respective limit. Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test results showed statistically significant (p < 0.05) differences in Cd, As, Cr, Ni, and Hg concentrations among some pelagic and demersal species. Besides, median Hg and As levels differed (p < 0.05) between farmed and wild fish, with higher values observed in the wild fish samples. At times, the estimated weekly intake (EWI) for As was exceeded in certain pelagic and demersal fish. Arsenic content in some demersal fish species posed potential toxicity. Further, the incremental (ILCR) and cumulative (∑ILCR) cancer risks for As, Cr, and Ni exceeded the benchmark (10⁻⁵), which is a concern. Limited consumption of demersal fish species may protect adult consumers from potential health hazards.

Species, tissue and gender-related metal and element accumulation in fish species in a large reservoir (Turkey) and health risks and nutritional benefits for consumers

Concentrations of 18 metals and elements (MEs) in the gills, skin, muscle and liver of Carasobarbus luteus and Cyprinus carpio from the Atatürk Reservoir in Turkey were investigated. The results revealed that variations in the ME contents between fish species can be attributed to different diets. The highest contents of most MEs were recorded in the gills. Gender had no significant effect on the contents of most MEs in the tissues of fish species investigated. The relations between MEs in tissues and fish size were not clear and consistent. Health risk assessment methods indicated that consumption of the studied fish species is safe. It was estimated that daily consumption of 140 g of C. carpio or 170 g of C. luteus would not be expected to cause any health risks. Furthermore, it was found that fish species would provide significant benefits in terms of intake of essential MEs.

Distribution and Bioaccumulation of Essential and Toxic Metals in Tissues of Thaila (Catla catla) from a Natural Lake, Pakistan and Its Possible Health Impact on Consumers

Although fish are often recommended as a component of a healthy diet, the environmental accumulation of heavy metals in many fish species has been of considerable concern for those weighing the nutritional health benefits against adverse toxic outcome of excess intake of toxic metals. This study aimed to determine the concentration of essential and toxic metals in the tissues of Catla catla in Mangla Lake and to assess the possible risk to the consumers. Fifty samples of Catla catla were collected from Mangla Lake, Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan and analyzed for eighteen metals including essential and trace metals. The measured range concentrations (µg/g, wet weight) in muscle tissues, in decreasing order, were: K (955–1632), Ca (550–2081), Na (449–896), Mg (129–312), Zn (61.2–215), Fe (11.6–26.8), Sr (2.60–9.27), Pb (1.72–7.81), Se (1.55–3.55), Co (0.12–4.08), Mn (1.04–4.33), Ni (0.69–3.06), Cu (0.88–2.78), Cr (0.45–1.88), As (0.67–1.58), Cd (0.28–0.56), Hg (0.17–0.57) and Li (0.12–0.38). The metal concentrations found in this study were comparatively higher than those reported in literature. A majority of the metals exhibited higher accumulation in gills compared with those in scales and muscles. Mean levels of Pb, As, Co, Mn, Cd, Cr and Zn in Catla catla muscle were found to be exceeding the international permissible limits for the safe human consumption. The condition factor (K), as an indicator of fish health status, indicated that Catla catla of Mangla Lake are in good health condition. The metal pollution index (MPI) of gills (27.9), scales (12.5) and muscle (7.57) indicated low contamination. Moreover, human health risk was evaluated using estimated weekly intake (EWI) and daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI) and target cancer risk (TCR). Estimated weekly and daily intake values for As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb were higher than provisional permissible tolerable weekly intake and permissible tolerable daily intake while THQ for As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Se and Zn was higher than 1. The THQ for As, Hg and Pb was several folds higher than 1, indicative of lifetime non-carcinogenic health risks to the consumers. The hazard index indicated cumulative risk, which greatly increased with increasing fish consumption. Target cancer risk indicated that the people eating the Catla catla from Mangla Lake were exposed to As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb with a significant lifetime carcinogenic risk. In summary, consumption of Catla catla from this lake was found to be associated with an increased lifetime risk to the general health of the consumers.

Residual Levels of Mercury, Cadmium, Lead and Arsenic in Some Commercially Key Species from Italian Coasts (Adriatic Sea): Focus on Human Health

This study provides information on the potential human health risk of Hg, Cd, Pb and As exposure from consumption of two fish species (Umbrina cirrosa and Sciaena umbra) in the general population and in high-level fish consumers. The concentrations did not show significant differences between the two species, and no fish length element level–body-length relationship was observed, except for Hg. The average metal(loid) levels, irrespective of species, varied in the following ranges: Hg = 0.18–0.19, Cd = 0.07–0.10, Pb = 0.10–0.12, As = 0.59–0.69 μg g⁻¹ w.w. The concentrations remained below the maximum permissible limits (MPLs) for human consumption, except for Cd. The estimated intakes of Hg, Cd and Pb in both consumption scenarios were lower than the respective PTWI/PTMIs, as well as those of inorganic As, which were even lower than the BMDL₀₁. The non-carcinogenic risk (THQ) did not reveal any concerns, except for Hg. The lifetime health cancer risk (ILCR) suggested hazard exclusively from Cd, although for high-level fish consumers, even the ILCR of inorganic As was, in some cases, above the acceptable range. Continuous monitoring of metal(loid) levels in these fish is strongly recommended because the results demonstrate the occurrence of potential health risks, especially in high-level fish consumers, due to the presence of Hg and Cd.

Bioaccumulation and human health risks of potentially toxic elements in fish species from the southeastern Carajás Mineral Province, Brazil

Anthropogenic activities may have increased the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in fish from the southeastern Carajás Mineral Province in Brazil, which has not yet been studied. The objectives were to determine the quality parameters of surface water and bottom sediments, and to assess the bioaccumulation and risks of Al, Fe, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Ti, V and Zn in fish species from the southeastern Carajás Mineral Province. Water, sediments and fish species (Colossoma macropomum, Curimata cyprinoides, Geophagus sp., Leporinus trifasciatus, and Serrasalmus eigenmanni) were collected in 14 areas in the municipalities of Parauapebas, Marabá and Canaã dos Carajás, contemplating the Gelado Stream and the Parauapebas, Tapirapé and Itacaiúnas Rivers. Water samples were subjected to physicochemical analysis using a multiparameter meter. Concentrations of PTEs in all samples were quantified by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) were calculated to study the sediment enrichment and contamination. Ecological and human health risk assessments were performed to determine the risks to the environment and population's health. EF and Igeo revealed that the sediments from the Parauapebas River and Gelado Stream are respectively enriched by Ba, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Pb, and Ba, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb and V. The concentrations of Fe (1.67 mg L^-1) and Mn (0.11 mg L^-1) in water and the concentrations of Cr (>0.1 mg kg^-1) and Pb (>2 mg kg^-1) in fish were above the Brazilian legislation thresholds. The ecological risk assessment revealed considerable risk from Ni and moderate risk from multiple PTEs in sediments from the Gelado Stream. Human health risks were detected for Pb in all fish species and for Mo in L.trifasciatus. These results indicate that techniques for monitoring and controlling contamination must be implemented by the environmental agencies.

Metal Bioaccumulation and Potential Health Risk Assessment in Different Tissues of Three Commercial Fish Species (Merluccius merluccius, Mullus barbatus, and Pagellus erythrinus) from Edremit Bay (Aegean Sea), Turkey

Metal levels and potential health risk assessment in muscle, liver, and gills of three fish species (Merluccius merluccius, Mullus barbatus, and Pagellus erythrinus) from the Edremit Bay were investigated in spring and autumn 2015. Metal concentrations (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe), metal pollution index, and bioaccumulation factors in P. erythrinus were observed to be generally higher than those in M. barbatus and M. merluccius. Tissue was the main factor that might be responsible from the variations of metals in fish species according to ANOVA and PCA. Hg concentrations in M. barbatus and P. erythrinus were greater than threshold limits defined by international authorities; however, no carcinogenic risks were found for Cd and Pb levels. According to the results, the bay has been negatively influenced by human activities, and further research on monitoring of the biota and sediments is recommended for Edremit Bay and similar coastal areas under human pressure.

Determination of Mercury, Methylmercury and Selenium Concentrations in Elasmobranch Meat: Fish Consumption Safety

This study measures total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) concentrations in elasmobranch fish from an Italian market with the aim of evaluating the risk-benefit associated with their consumption, using estimated weekly intake (EWI), permissible safety level (MeHg_PSL), selenium health benefit value (HBV_Se) and monthly consumption rate limit (CR_mm) for each species. THg and Se were analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry, while MeHg was determined by HrGc/Ms. THg and MeHg concentrations ranged from 0.61 to 1.25 μg g^-1 w.w. and from 0.57 to 0.97 μg g^-1 w.w., respectively, whereas Se levels were 0.49-0.65 μg g^-1 w.w. In most samples European Community limits for THg were surpassed, while for MeHg none of the fish had levels above the limit adopted by FAO/WHO. EWIs for THg and MeHg in many cases were above the provisional tolerable weekly intakes (PTWIs). MeHg_PSL estimate showed that fish should contain approximately 50% of the concentration measured to avoid exceeding the PTWI. Nevertheless, the HBV_Se index indicated that solely skates were safe for human consumption (HBV_Se = 3.57-6.22). Our results highlight the importance of a constant monitoring of THg and MeHg level in fish, especially in apex predators, to avoid the risk of overexposure for consumers.

A Food-Safety Risk Assessment of Mercury, Lead and Cadmium in Fish Recreationally Caught from Three Lakes in Poland

The research aimed to determine the content of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) in water, sediment, and freshwater fish species roach (Rutilus rutilus), perch (Perca fluviatilis), and pike (Esox lucius) from the Dratów, Syczyńskie, and Czarne Sosnowickie lakes located on Polesie Lubelskie, Poland, as well as a food safety assessment for the consumer. Pb and Cd were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, while Hg was measured by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. The research results showed that both the waters and the sediments of the studied lakes are characterised by a low concentration of Pb, Cd, and Hg, which indicates the lack of a moderate influence of anthropopressure on these reservoirs. The range of heavy metal contents in the muscles of roach, pike, and perch for Pb was 0.0399–0.1595, 0.0305–0.0920, and 0.0296–0.1057 mg kg⁻¹, respectively; for Cd 0.0014–0.0095, 0.0010–0.0015, and 0.0020 mg kg⁻¹, respectively; and for Hg 0.0123–0.0499, 0.0185–0.0255, and 0.0216–0.0583 mg kg⁻¹, respectively. The content of heavy metals in fish muscles was low and conformed to requirements as defined in the European Union (EU) food legislation. The health risk assessment with regard to the heavy metal contents in the muscles of fish confirmed the safety of this food for consumers.

Abstract

Heavy metals are introduced into water due to anthropogenic activities and can significantly affect an entire ecosystem. Due to their close integration with the water environment, fish are a sensitive indicator of contamination. In addition, fish is an important element in human diets, therefore, monitoring the concentrations of metallic contaminants in their meat is particularly important for food safety. This study aimed to assess the pollution of water ecosystems with selected toxic heavy metals in lakes Dratów, Czarne Sosnowickie, and Syczyńskie. The concentration of Pb, Cd, and Hg in water, sediment, and freshwater fish muscle tissue was determined, and a food safety assessment was performed. The analysis of water and sediments showed that the sediments were characterised by a significantly higher concentration of heavy metals. Presumably, this ecosystem element plays an important role in the uptake of heavy metal contaminants by fish whose levels were higher in planktonophagous and benthophagous fish species as compared to predatory fish. The food safety assessment showed that amounts of heavy metals in the muscle tissue posed no threat to the health of consumers ingesting that fish species, neither individually (THQ) nor collectively (TTHQ).

Accumulation of Trace Metals in Indigenous Fish Species from the Old Brahmaputra River in Bangladesh and Human Health Risk Implications

In this study, accumulation of the top six most toxic trace metals (Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Mercury (Hg), Nickel (Ni) and Lead (Pb)) were assessed in six indigenous fish species (Barilius barila, Salmostoma acinaces, Gudusia chapra, Labeo bata, Corica soborna, and Sperata aor) collected from the Old Brahmaputra River in Bangladesh. Human health risk associated with these fish consumption was also evaluated. Metals were analyzed in whole body of fish by an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). Mean concentrations of metals (μg/g, wet weight) were in the range of As (< 0.02-0.278), Cd (< 0.002-0.005), Cr (0.239-0.761), Hg (0.008-0.057), Ni (< 0.02-0.044), and Pb (< 0.01-0.038). The metal contents varied significantly among the fishes regarding their feeding habits and living habitats. Concentrations of As, Cr, Hg, and Pb were significantly higher in omnivorous species, whereas the benthopelagic species showed significantly higher accumulation of As (p < 0.05). The target hazard quotient (THQ) for noncarcinogenic risk and target cancer risk (TR) for carcinogenic risk were calculated to estimate the probabilities of experiencing these adverse health effects for the fish consumers. Metal-specific THQ values were all below 1 indicating no potential human health risk. Nonetheless, the hazard index (HI) values to estimate the effects from exposure to all metals collectively elucidated chronic noncarcinogenic health risk particularly from G. chapra consumption. The TR values revealed that there was carcinogenic risk from exposure to As through consumption of the fish. This study finally suggests a systematic and continuous monitoring of trace metal contamination in fishes from the river to ensure the fitness of this food item regarding the safety for human health.

Integrated geospatial analysis linking metal contamination among three different compartments of Lake Edku ecosystem in Egypt to human health effects

This study is the first in forming an integrated up-to-date spatial analysis linking heavy metal contamination among three different compartments of Lake Edku ecosystem to human health effects. The study determined the concentrations of iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd) in sediment and water samples collected from 12 stations covering the entire lake, as well as in the liver and muscle tissues of the three commercially edible fish species (African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus), Blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus), and Redbelly tilapia (Tilapia zillii)), during winter 2019. Cartographic maps investigating the spatial contamination pattern of each metal in sediment and water samples along the entire lake, as well as correlation analysis between metal pairs, were generated. Moreover, the study examined the affinity of metal transfer among the three compartments and assessed the probability of being exposed to non-carcinogenic health hazards from the consumption of the abovementioned species. Results revealed that Fe and Cd recorded the highest and lowest mean concentrations, respectively, in sediment, water, and fish samples. The mean concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Ni in the water of Lake Edku, as well as the mean concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Cr in muscle tissues of the three examined fish species, exceeded the permissible limits. The northwestern part of the lake exhibited the highest concentrations of Fe, Ni, and Cr in Lake Edku's sediment with strong significant positive correlations recorded between Fe-Ni, Fe-Cr, and Ni-Cr pairs suggesting sharing the same contamination source. Concerning Lake Edku's water, the northwestern area displayed the highest concentrations for all metals. Moreover, Cd, Pb, and Cr exhibited nearly the same spatial contamination pattern with the hotspot located in the western part of the lake. Strong significant positive correlations were found between Cd-Pb, Cd-Cr, and Pb-Cr pairs in surface water, suggesting sharing the same origin of dispersion. The three fish species accumulated heavy metals from water several folds higher than from sediments, indicating that water is the main source of the intensive transfer of heavy metals to the three fish species. Based on the consumption of the three investigated fish species, children recorded the highest estimated daily (EDI) and weekly intakes (EWI) of heavy metals followed by adults. Regardless Pb, EWI values indicated that there are no significant health risks through fish consumption from the examined metals recommending that children should consume less than 85.227 g/day African sharptooth catfish muscle, 108.696 g/day Blue tilapia muscle, and 97.403 g/day Redbelly tilapia muscle to assure their health. Moreover, adults should consume less than 397.727 g/day African sharptooth catfish muscle, 507.24 g/day Blue tilapia muscle, and 454.54 g/day Redbelly tilapia muscle. The estimated hazard quotient (HQ) of all metals was lower than or close to the safe values of one for children and adults in the three investigated fish species indicating the absence of potential non-carcinogenic threats. The hazard index (HI) estimated for the five examined heavy metals in each of the investigated fish species was below one in adults only. Regarding the total hazard index estimated from consuming the three fish species, both children and adults may be subjected to non-carcinogenic risk.

Mercury and selenium in fish from the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea: A risk-benefit assessment in vulnerable population groups

The study examines the levels of total mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) in the muscle tissue of 12 commercially important fish species (n = 717) from 48 locations in the eastern Adriatic Sea, as a function of fish species, size and habitat. Risks and benefits of fish consumption regarding Hg and Se in children (7 years) and women of reproductive age (30 years) were also evaluated. All samples but one were compliant with the European regulatory limit for Hg in fish muscle. Concentrations (μg g^-1 ww) of Hg (range: 0.014-1.37) and Se (range: 0.184-1.12) and Se:Hg molar ratios in fish were associated with habitat type. Demersal species had the highest Hg and the lowest Se concentrations, while pelagic species had the lowest Hg concentrations, highest Se concentrations and Se:Hg molar ratios. All species had Se:Hg molar ratios above 1 (range: 1.4-66.9) and a selenium health benefit value (HBV_Se) above zero (range: 3.3-9.3), indicating Se excess after Hg sequestration. The intake of two meals per week of small pelagic-neritic and bento-pelagic fish is estimated to be a valuable source of essential Se, and does not pose a risk from toxic Hg exposure in children and women during the vulnerable reproductive period. Due to the low Hg and favorable Se:Hg molar ratio and HBV_Se index, small pelagic species offer a good risk to benefit ratio of fish consumption and could be considered an optimal choice in these sensitive subpopulations.
