Abstract
Lipid vesicles are widely used for drug and gene delivery, but their structural instability reduces in vivo efficacy and requires specialized handling. To address these limitations, strategies like lipid cross-linking and polymer-lipid conjugation are suggested to enhance stability and biological efficacy. However, the in vivo metabolism of these altered lipids remains unclear, necessitating further studies. A new stabilization technique without chemical modification is urgently needed. Here, a bio-mimetic approach for fabricating robust multilamellar lipid vesicles to enhance in vivo delivery and stabilization of protein antigens is presented. This method leverages 1-O-acylceramide, a natural skin lipid, to facilitate the self-assembly of lipid nanovesicles. Incorporating 1-O-acylceramide, anchoring lipid bilayers akin to its role in the stratum corneum, provides excellent stability under environmental stresses, including freeze-thaw cycles. Encapsulating ovalbumin as a model antigen and the adjuvant monophosphoryl lipid A demonstrates the vesicle's potential as a nanovaccine platform. In vitro studies show enhanced immune responses with both unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles, but in vivo analyses highlight the superior efficiency of multilamellar vesicles in inducing higher antibody and cytokine levels. This work suggests ceramide-induced multilamellar lipid vesicles as an effective nanovaccine platform for enhanced antigen delivery and stability.

Abstract
This work was to investigate the effect of four prebiotic saccharides gum arabic (GA), fructooligosaccharide (FOS), konjac glucomannan (KGM), and inulin (INU) incorporation on the encapsulation efficiency (EE), physicochemical stability, and in vitro digestion of urolithin A-loaded liposomes (UroA-LPs). The regulation of liposomes on gut microbiota was also investigated by in vitro colonic fermentation. Results indicated that liposomes coated with GA showed the best EE, bioaccessibility, storage and thermal stability, the bioaccessibility was 1.67 times of that of UroA-LPs. The UroA-LPs coated with FOS showed the best freeze-thaw stability and transformation. Meanwhile, saccharides addition remarkably improved the relative abundance of Bacteroidota, reduced the abundances of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. The UroA-LPs coated with FOS, INU, and GA exhibited the highest beneficial bacteria abundance of Parabacteroides, Monoglobus, and Phascolarctobacterium, respectively. FOS could also decrease the abundance of harmful bacteria Collinsella and Enterococcus, and increase the levels of acetic acid, butyric acid and iso-butyric acid. Consequently, prebiotic saccharides can improve the EE, physicochemical stability, gut microbiota regulation of UroA-LPs, and promote the bioaccessibility of UroA, but the efficiency varied based on saccharides types, which can lay a foundation for the application of UroA in foods industry and for the enhancement of its bio-activities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ellagic acid (EA), commonly found in foods, offers significant health benefits in combating chronic diseases. However, its therapeutic potential is hindered by its extremely poor solubility and bioavailability. METHOD In this study, EA nanoparticles (EA NPs) were produced using a sono-assembly method, without additional agents. RESULTS EA NPs exhibited stick-like nanoparticle structures with an average size of 147.3 ± 0.73 nm. EA NPs likely adopt a tunnel-type solvate structure, with 4 water participating in disruption of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in EA and establishment of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between EAs. Importantly, EA NPs exhibited remarkable enhancements in water solubility, with 120.7-fold increase in water, and 97.8-fold increase in pH 6.8 buffer. Moreover, ex vivo intestinal permeability studies demonstrated significant improvements (P < 0.5). These findings were further supported by in vivo pharmacokinetic studies, where EA NPs significantly enhanced the relative bioavailability of EA by 4.69 times.

Abstract
Fat reduction due to heating or cooking is an important issue in a healthy diet. In the current study, pork subcutaneous back fat was treated via microwave heating (MH) within 10-90 s and roasting - steam heating (RSH) within 2-30 min and their dynamic changes of individual adipocytes were explored by using vesicles as a bio-membrane model. The result showed that MH and RSH significantly increased fat loss (P < 0.05), with the maximum losses being 74.1 % and 65.6 %, respectively. The mechanical strength of connective tissue decreased and then increased slightly. The microstructure demonstrated that MH and RSH treatments facilitated a large outflow of fat, showing that the particle size of the vesicle and individual adipocytes increased and then decreased. It is thus feasible to study the dynamic changes of individual adipocytes in regulating fat reduction using cell membrane simulation.

Abstract
Anti-microbial peptides (AMPs) have gained significant attention as potential antimicrobial agents due to their cytocompatibility and reduced drug resistance. However, AMPs often suffer from low stability due to their vulnerable molecular structure. This study presents a one-pot synthesis method for ellagic acid (EA)-based, flower-like AMPs@EAMP particles, combining the antibacterial properties of EA with AMPs. The resulting particles exhibit an enlarged surface area for the adsorption or embedding of AMPs, enhancing their antibacterial efficacy. Furthermore, in vitro evaluations demonstrate excellent biocompatibility and broad-spectrum activity against bacterial strains including both Gram-positive S. epidermidis and Gram-negative E. coli. In vivo studies indicate AMPs@EAMPs' potential to reconstruct the immune barrier, inhibit pathogens, and reduce inflammation, promoting orderly tissue repair. This innovative synthesis strategy provides a straightforward and effective approach for large-scale production of flower-like AMPs@EAMP particles with remarkable antibacterial properties, addressing the challenges associated with MDR infections.

Abstract
The awareness of the existence of plant bioactive compounds, namely, phytochemicals (PHYs), with health properties is progressively expanding. Therefore, their massive introduction in the normal diet and in food supplements and their use as natural therapeutics to treat several diseases are increasingly emphasized by several sectors. In particular, most PHYs possessing antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiulcer, anti-cholesterol, hypoglycemic, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties have been isolated from plants. Additionally, their secondary modification with new functionalities to further improve their intrinsic beneficial effects has been extensively investigated. Unfortunately, although the idea of exploiting PHYs as therapeutics is amazing, its realization is far from simple, and the possibility of employing them as efficient clinically administrable drugs is almost utopic. Most PHYs are insoluble in water, and, especially when introduced orally, they hardly manage to pass through physiological barriers and scarcely reach the site of action in therapeutic concentrations. Their degradation by enzymatic and microbial digestion, as well as their rapid metabolism and excretion, strongly limits their in vivo activity. To overcome these drawbacks, several nanotechnological approaches have been used, and many nanosized PHY-loaded delivery systems have been developed. This paper, by reporting various case studies, reviews the foremost nanosuspension- and nanoemulsion-based techniques developed for formulating the most relevant PHYs into more bioavailable nanoparticles (NPs) that are suitable or promising for clinical application, mainly by oral administration. In addition, the acute and chronic toxic effects due to exposure to NPs reported so far, the possible nanotoxicity that could result from their massive employment, and ongoing actions to improve knowledge in this field are discussed. The state of the art concerning the actual clinical application of both PHYs and the nanotechnologically engineered PHYs is also reviewed.

Abstract
Ellagic acid (EA) has long been recognized as a very active antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial agent. However, its low bioavailability has often hampered its applications in health-related fields. Here, we report a phospholipid vesicle-based controlled release system for EA, involving the exploitation of chestnut wood mud (CWM), an industrial by-product from chestnut tannin production, as a largely available and low-cost source of this compound. Two kinds of CWM with different particle size distributions, indicated as CWM-A and CWM-B (<100 and 32 µm, respectively), containing 5 ± 1% w/w EA, were incorporated into transfersomes. The latter were small in size (~100 nm), homogeneously dispersed, and negatively charged. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assays indicated up to three-fold improvement in the antioxidant properties of CWM upon incorporation into transfersomes. The kinetics of EA released under simulated physiological conditions were evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy and HPLC analysis. The best results were obtained with CWM-B (100% of EA gradually released after 37 days at pH 7.4). A stepwise increase in the antioxidant properties of the released material was also observed. Cell-based experiments confirmed the efficacy of CWM-B transfersomes as antioxidant agents in contrasting photodamage.

Abstract
Liposomes have been used extensively as micro- and nanocarriers for hydrophobic or hydrophilic molecules. However, conventional liposomes are biodegradable and quickly eliminated, making it difficult to be used for delivery in specific routes, such as the oral and systemic routes. One way to overcome this problem is through complexation with polymers, which is referred to as a liposome complex. The use of polymers can increase the stability of liposome with regard to pH, chemicals, enzymes, and the immune system. In some cases, specific polymers can condition the properties of liposomes to be explicitly used in drug delivery, such as targeted delivery and controlled release. These properties are influenced by the type of polymer, crosslinker, interaction, and bond in the complexation process. Therefore, it is crucial to study and review these parameters for the development of more optimal forms and properties of the liposome complex. This article discusses the use of natural and synthetic polymers, ways of interaction between polymers and liposomes (on the surface, incorporation in lamellar chains, and within liposomes), types of bonds, evaluation standards, and their effects on the stability and pharmacokinetic profile of the liposome complex, drugs, and vaccines. This article concludes that both natural and synthetic polymers can be used in modifying the structure and physicochemical properties of liposomes to specify their use in targeted delivery, controlled release, and stabilizing drugs and vaccines.

Abstract
Polyelectrolyte multilayers are promising drug carriers with potential applications in the delivery of poorly soluble drugs. Furthermore, the polyelectrolyte multilayer contributes towards electrostatic interactions, which enhances the physical and chemical stability of colloids when compared to those prepared by other approaches. The aim of this work was to generate a polyelectrolyte multilayer on well characterised nanoparticles of the poorly water-soluble drug, griseofulvin. Griseofulvin (GF) nanoparticles (300 nm) were produced by wet bead milling, bearing a negative surface charge due to the use of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) as a stabiliser. Six further layers of alternating chitosan and PSS polyelectrolyte multilayer were successfully generated at the particle surface either via use of: (1) the conventional method of adding excess coating polymer followed by centrifugation, or (2) the continuous in situ approach of adding sufficient amount of coating polymer. The continuous in situ method was designed de novo by the consecutive addition of polymers under high shear rate mixing. In comparison to the continuous in situ method, the conventional method yielded nanoparticles of smaller size (282 ±9 nm vs. 497 ±34 nm) and higher stability by maintaining its size for 6 months. In conclusion, the parent griseofulvin nanosuspension proved to be a suitable candidate for the polyelectrolyte multilayer fabrication providing an avenue for a bespoke formulation with versatile and potentially enhanced drug delivery properties.

Abstract
One of the undeniable trends in modern bioengineering and nanotechnology is the use of various biomolecules, primarily of a polymeric nature, for the design and formulation of novel functional materials for controlled and targeted drug delivery, bioimaging and theranostics, tissue engineering, and other bioapplications. Biocompatibility, biodegradability, the possibility of replicating natural cellular microenvironments, and the minimal toxicity typical of biogenic polymers are features that have secured a growing interest in them as the building blocks for biomaterials of the fourth generation. Many recent studies showed the promise of the hard-templating approach for the fabrication of nano- and microparticles utilizing biopolymers. This review covers these studies, bringing together up-to-date knowledge on biopolymer-based multilayer capsules and beads, critically assessing the progress made in this field of research, and outlining the current challenges and perspectives of these architectures. According to the classification of the templates, the review sequentially considers biopolymer structures templated on non-porous particles, porous particles, and crystal drugs. Opportunities for the functionalization of biopolymer-based capsules to tailor them toward specific bioapplications is highlighted in a separate section.

Abstract
Numerous foods, plants, and their bioactive constituents (BACs), named nutraceuticals and phytochemicals by experts, have shown many beneficial effects including antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiulcer, anti-cholesterol, hypoglycemic, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant activities. Producers, consumers, and the market of food- and plant-related compounds are increasingly attracted by health-promoting foods and plants, thus requiring a wider and more fruitful exploitation of the healthy properties of their BACs. The demand for new BACs and for the development of novel functional foods and BACs-based food additives is pressing from various sectors. Unfortunately, low stability, poor water solubility, opsonization, and fast metabolism in vivo hinder the effective exploitation of the potential of BACs. To overcome these issues, researchers have engineered nanomaterials, obtaining food-grade delivery systems, and edible food- and plant-related nanoparticles (NPs) acting as color, flavor, and preservative additives and natural therapeutics. Here, we have reviewed the nanotechnological transformations of several BACs implemented to increase their bioavailability, to mask any unpleasant taste and flavors, to be included as active ingredients in food or food packaging, to improve food appearance, quality, and resistance to deterioration due to storage. The pending issue regarding the possible toxic effect of NPs, whose knowledge is still limited, has also been discussed.

Abstract
The use of bioactive compounds within the biopolymer-based Edible Coatings (EC) matrices has certain limitations for their application at the food industry level. Encapsulation has been considered as a strategy that enables protecting and improving the physical and chemical characteristics of the compounds; as a result, it extends the shelf life of coated foods. This review discusses recent progress in combining edible coatings with nanoencapsulation technology. We also described and discussed various works, in which nanoliposomes are used as encapsulation systems to prepare, and subsequently apply the edible coatings in plant products and meat products. The use of nanoliposomes for the encapsulation of phenolic compounds and essential oils provides an improvement in the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of coatings by extending the shelf life of food matrices. However, when liposomes are stored for a long period of time, they may present some degree of instability manifested by an increase in size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential. This is reflected in an aggregation, fusion, and rupture of the vesicles. This investigation can help researchers and industries to select an appropriate and efficient biopolymer to form EC containing nanoencapsulated active compounds. This work also addresses the use of nanoliposomes to create EC extending markedly the shelf life of fruit, reducing the weight loss, and deterioration due to the action of microorganisms.

Abstract
The Layer-by-Layer (LbL) method is a well-established method for the assembly of nanomaterials with controlled structure and functionality through the alternate deposition onto a template of two mutual interacting molecules, e.g., polyelectrolytes bearing opposite charge. The current development of this methodology has allowed the fabrication of a broad range of systems by assembling different types of molecules onto substrates with different chemical nature, size, or shape, resulting in numerous applications for LbL systems. In particular, the use of soft colloidal nanosurfaces, including nanogels, vesicles, liposomes, micelles, and emulsion droplets as a template for the assembly of LbL materials has undergone a significant growth in recent years due to their potential impact on the design of platforms for the encapsulation and controlled release of active molecules. This review proposes an analysis of some of the current trends on the fabrication of LbL materials using soft colloidal nanosurfaces, including liposomes, emulsion droplets, or even cells, as templates. Furthermore, some fundamental aspects related to deposition methodologies commonly used for fabricating LbL materials on colloidal templates together with the most fundamental physicochemical aspects involved in the assembly of LbL materials will also be discussed.

Abstract
Urolithin A (Uro-A), a metabolite of ellagitannins in mammals' intestinal tract, displays broad biological properties in preclinical models, including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor effects. However, the clinical application of Uro-A is restricted because of its low aqueous solubility and short elimination half-life. Our purpose was to develop a delivery system to improve the bioavailability and anti-tumor efficacy of Uro-A. To achieve this goal, urolithin A-loaded PEGylated liposomes (Uro-A-PEG-LPs) were prepared for the first time and its physicochemical properties and anti-tumor efficacy in vitro were evaluated. The morphology of Uro-A-PEG-LPs displayed a uniform sphere under transmission electron microscope. The particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency of Uro-A-PEG-LPs were 122.8 ± 7.4 nm, 0.25 ± 0.16, - 25.5 ± 2.3 mV, and 94.6 ± 1.6%, respectively. Moreover, Uro-A-PEG-LPs possessed higher stability and could be stably stored at 4°C for a long time. In vitro release characteristics indicated that Uro-A-PEG-LPs possessed superior sustained release properties. The results of confocal laser scanning microscopy experiment showed that the coumarin 6-loaded PEGylated liposomes (C6-PEG-LPs) have superior cellular uptake than that of conventional liposomes. In addition, in vitro tests demonstrated that Uro-A-PEG-LPs elevated cytotoxicity and pro-apoptotic effect in human hepatoma cells comparing with free Uro-A. Furthermore, the results of pharmacokinetic experiments showed that the t1/2, AUC0-t, and MRT0-t of Uro-A-PEG-LPs increased to 4.58-fold, 2.33-fold, and 2.43-fold than those of free Uro-A solution, respectively. Collectively, these manifested that PEGylated liposomes might be a potential delivery system for Uro-A to prolonging in vivo circulation time, promoting cellular uptake, and enhancing its anti-tumor efficacy.

Abstract
Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenolic compound whose dietary consumption is mainly associated with the intake of red fruits, including pomegranates, strawberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, grapes or dried fruits, like walnuts and almonds. A number of studies indicate that EA exerts health-beneficial effects against several chronic pathologies associated with oxidative damage, including different kinds of cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, EA possesses wound-healing properties, antibacterial and antiviral effects, and acts as a systemic antioxidant. However, clinical applications of this polyphenol have been hampered and prevented by its poor water solubility (9.7 ± 3.2 μg ml-1 in water) and pharmacokinetic profile (limited absorption rate and plasma half-life <1 h after ingestion of pomegranate juice), properties due to the chemical nature of the organic heterotetracyclic compound. Little has been reported on efficient strategies to enhance EA poor oral bioavailability, including chemical structure modifications, encapsulation within nano-microspheres to be used as carriers, and molecular dispersion in polymer matrices. In this review we summarize the experimental approaches investigated so far in order to improve EA pharmacokinetics, supporting the hypothesis that enhancement in EA solubility is a feasible route for increasing its oral absorption.

Abstract
Multilayered coated liposomes were prepared using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique in an effort to improve their stability in biological media. The formulation strategy was based on the alternate deposition of two biocompatible and biodegradable polyelectrolytes - poly(L-lysine) (PLL) and poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) - on negatively charged small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs). Some parameters of the formulation process were optimized such as the polyelectrolyte concentration and the purification procedure. This optimized procedure has allowed the development of very homogeneous formulations of liposomes coated with up to 6 layers of polymers (so-called layersomes). The coating was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential measurements and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between two fluorescently labeled polyelectrolytes. Studies on the stability of the formulations at 4 °C in a buffered solution have shown that most structures are stable over 1 month without impacting their encapsulation capacity. In addition, fluorophore release experiments have demonstrated a better resistance of the layersomes in the presence of a non-ionic detergent (Triton™ X-100) as well as in the presence of phospholipase A2 and human plasma. In conclusion, new multilayered liposomes have been developed to increase the stability of conventional liposomes in biological environments.

Abstract
Ellagic acid (EA), a naturally occurring bioactive phenolic compound largely found in pomegranate, exhibits significant health benefits due to its antioxidant, antimutagenic, and even anticancerogenic properties. The present work aimed to microencapsulate EA extracted from pomegranate peels. To improve the stability of EA, microencapsulation was applied with Spirulina as a coating material. For this purpose, ethanolic extracts obtained from pomegranate peels were used for microencapsulation. Response surface methodology combined with a three-level, three-variable Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to obtain optimum microencapsulation. The microparticles obtained under the optimized encapsulation conditions were further characterized by FT-IR and SEM. The results confirmed the encapsulation of EA in Spirulina cells. Then, the optimum microparticles were used in an in vitro release study. The results of the in vitro digestion with simulated gastrointestinal fluids could help to determine the content and biological activity of EA. In this study, the effect of encapsulation on the release properties of EA during simulated gastrointestinal digestion was also evaluated. HPLC-DAD analysis and the Folin-Ciocalteu and ABTS methods were helpful for characterization of EA in the simulated fluids. The release profile of EA indicated that in simulated intestinal fluid, the release was faster than that in gastric fluid. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study describes the microencapsulation of ethanolic extracts of pomegranate peel (PP) in Spirulina. This application has been performed to improve the stability and bioavailability of EA in the extracts. Optimum microencapsulation was obtained by response surface methodology with BBD. After the characterization of the obtained optimum Spirulina/EA mixture by FT-IR and SEM, an in vitro release study was conducted for stability research. The results will guide other researchers working on the determination of the content and biological activity of EA and on optimizing the microencapsulation process.

Abstract
Disulfiram (DSF) has been considered as "Repurposing drug" in cancer therapy in recent years based on its good antitumor efficacy. DSF is traditionally used as an oral drug in the treatment of alcoholism. To overcome its rapid degradation and instability, DSF nanosuspensions (DSF/SPC-NSps) were prepared using soybean lecithin (SPC) as a stabilizer of high drug-loaded content (44.36 ± 1.09%). Comprehensive characterization of the nanosuspensions was performed, and cell cytotoxicity, in vivo antitumor efficacy and biodistribution were studied. DSF/SPC-NSps, having a spherical appearance with particle size of 155 nm, could remain very stable in different physiological media, and sustained release. The in vitro MTT assay indicated that the cytotoxicity of DSF/SPC-NSps was enhanced remarkably compared to free DSF against the 4T1 cell line. The IC50 value decreased by 11-fold (1.23 vs. 13.93 μg/mL, p < 0.01). DSF/SPC-NSps groups administered via intravenous injections exhibited better antitumor efficacy compared to the commercial paclitaxel injection (PTX injection) and had a dose-dependent effect in vivo. Notably, DSF/SPC-NSps exhibited similar antitumor activity following oral administration as PTX administration via injection into a vein. These results suggest that the prepared nanosuspensions can be used as a stable delivery vehicle for disulfiram, which has potential application in breast cancer chemotherapy.

Abstract
In this paper, the fabrication of algal extract-loaded nanoliposomes was optimized based on the central composite response surface design. Different concentrations of phenolic compounds (500, 1,000, and 1,500 ppm) of algal extract and lecithin (0.5, 1.25, and 2% w/w) were applied for preparation of nanoliposomes at process temperatures of 30, 50, and 70°C. Dependent variables were zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, size, and particle size distribution. The particle size of the loaded nanoliposomes ranged from 86.6 to 118.7 nm and zeta potential from -37.3 to -50.7 mV. The optimal conditions were as follows: 0.5% lecithin, 30°C process temperature, and 1,313 ppm of the phenolic compounds extracted from algae. Under these conditions, the experimental entrapment efficiency of the phenolic compounds was 45.5 ± 1.2%. FTIR analysis has verified the encapsulation of algal extract in nanoliposomes. Algal extract phenolic compounds also increased phase transition temperature (Tc) of nanoliposomes (1.6°C to 6.3°C). Moreover, the thermo-oxidative protection of nanoliposomes for the algal extract has been proved by examining the DSC thermograms. It has been demonstrated that the formulated nanoliposomes have a good stability during storage conditions, and they are able to control the release of phenolic compounds at different pH values. During the encapsulation process, the antioxidant activity of the algal extract has been maintained to an acceptable level. Consequently, algal extract-loaded nanoliposomes can be used as a natural antioxidant in lipid-based foods.

Abstract
Having various domains of applicability, liposomes have been the issue of many studies since 1960s. Kinetically stable nature of liposomes required incorporation of other substituents to gain storage stability and interaction of liposomes with polymers, electrolytes, proteins or lipids still requires further investigation to explain the underlying mechanism. In this study, polyphenol-rich green tea extract was encapsulated into liposomes by means of microfluidization in two different aqueous media (pH = 3.8 acetate buffer and pH = 6.5 distilled water). Antioxidant loaded vesicles were further mixed with anionic biopolymers (gum arabic, whey protein) and cationic biopolymers (lysozyme, chitosan) separately. The physical and chemical interactions between liposomes and biopolymers were rationalized by particle size, zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity measurements during 28-days storage at 4 °C. Experimental results indicated that the biopolymer incorporated liposomes showed better stability compared to control liposomes during storage, developing resistance against changes in particle size and zeta potential. On the other hand, biopolymer interaction mechanisms were shown to be different for different biopolymers. As was also proved by transmission electron microscopy, lysozyme was absorbed into the liposomes while gum arabic, whey protein and chitosan were adsorbed on the vesicle surface to shield green tea extract loaded liposomes.

Abstract
Liposomes could improve the delivery of substances to sperm. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the antioxidant ellagic acid and ellagic acid-loaded liposomes on post-thawed sperm quality in broiler breeder roosters. Semen was diluted in Beltsville extender containing ellagic acid or ellagic acid-loaded liposomes (ellagic acid at 0 (control), 0.5, 1, and 2 mM) and cryopreserved. Sperm quality was evaluated post-thawing: motility characteristics (Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis), membrane functionality (HOS test), abnormal morphology, mitochondrial activity (Rhodamine 123), apoptotic status (Annexin V/Propidium iodide), malondialdehyde, and antioxidant activities (glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC)). The results showed that 1 mM ellagic acid-loaded liposomes improved total motility, membrane functionality, and viability comparing to 0.5 and 2 mM ellagic acid, 2 mM ellagic acid-loaded liposomes, and control group. Mitochondrial activity was significantly higher for 1 mM ellagic acid-loaded liposomes compared to the rest of the treatments, except 1 mM ellagic acid. Ellagic acid at 1 mM in both forms significantly increased GPx and TAC after freeze-thawing (no significant variation for SOD), and also yielded the lower proportion of apoptotic and dead cells. In conclusion, ellagic acid improved post-thawed sperm quality in broiler breeder roosters. The use of liposomes could further enhance the effects of ellagic acid.

Abstract
Nanotechnology refers to the control, manipulation, study and manufacture of structures and devices at the nanometer size range. The small size, customized surface, improved solubility and multi-functionality of nanoparticles will continue to create new biomedical applications, as nanoparticles allow to dominate stability, solubility and bioavailability, as well controlled release of drugs. The type of a nanoparticle, and its related chemical, physical and morphological properties influence its interaction with living cells, as well as determine the route of clearance and possible toxic effects. This field requires cross-disciplinary research and gives opportunities to design and develop multifunctional devices, which allow the diagnosis and treatment of devastating diseases. Over the past few decades, biodegradable polymers have been studied for the fabrication of drug delivery systems. There was extensive development of biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles for drug delivery and tissue engineering, in view of their applications in controlling the release of drugs, stabilizing labile molecules from degradation and site-specific drug targeting. The primary aim is to reduce dosing frequency and prolong the therapeutic outcomes. For this purpose, inert excipients should be selected, being biopolymers, e.g. sodium alginate, commonly used in controlled drug delivery. Nanoparticles composed of alginate (known as anionic polysaccharide widely distributed in the cell walls of brown algae which, when in contact with water, forms a viscous gum) have emerged as one of the most extensively characterized biomaterials used for drug delivery and targeting a set of administration routes. Their advantages include not only the versatile physicochemical properties, which allow chemical modifications for site-specific targeting but also their biocompatibility and biodegradation profiles, as well as mucoadhesiveness. Furthermore, mechanical strength, gelation, and cell affinity can be modulated by combining alginate nanoparticles with other polymers, surface tailoring using specific targeting moieties and by chemical or physical cross-linking. However, for every physicochemical modification in the macromolecule/ nanoparticles, a new toxicological profile may be obtained. In this paper, the different aspects related to the use of alginate nanoparticles for drug delivery and targeting have been revised, as well as how their toxicological profile will determine the therapeutic outcome of the drug delivery system.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the paper was to develop the simple procedures for preparation of inclusion complexes of ellagic acid (EA) with cyclodextrins (CDs) and to investigate their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. METHODS The structural characterization was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods. The phase solubility technique was used to investigate the interactions between 'host' and 'guest' molecules and to estimate the molar ratio between them. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of EA and inclusion complexes were determined. RESULTS The apparent stability constants were found to be 117 dm3 mol-1 for the complex with β-CD and 161 dm3 mol-1 for the complex with (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD). The results of phase-solubility studies showed that EA formed the inclusion complexes with CDs in the molar ratio of 1:1. The calculated half-maximal inhibitory concentration was 41.18 μg cm-3 for butyl hydroxy toluene, 1.96 μg cm-3 for EA, 0.88 μg cm-3 for inclusion complex with HP-β-CD, and 1.27 μg cm-3 for inclusion complex with β-CD. CONCLUSION The stability constants indicated the rapid release of EA from the inclusion complexes in the aqueous medium at 25 °C. The antioxidant activity of EA was increased, while the antimicrobial activity was preserved after complexation with CDs.

Abstract
Engineering of multifunctional drug nanocarriers combining stability and good release properties remains a great challenge. In this work, natural polymers κ-carrageenan (κ-CAR) and chitosan (CS) were deposited onto olive oil nanoemulsion droplets (NE) via layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly to study the release mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory diflunisal (DF) as a lipophilic drug model. The nano-systems were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential (ζ-potential) measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to confirm the NE-coating with polymer layers. In addition, kinetic release studies of DF were developed by the dialysis diffusion bag technique. Mathematical models were applied to investigate the release mechanisms. The results showed that stable and suitably sized nanocapsules (~300 nm) were formed. Also, the consecutive adsorption of polyelectrolytes by charge reversal was evidenced. More interestingly, the drug release mechanism varied depending on the number of layers deposited. The nanosized systems containing up to two layers showed anomalous transport and first order kinetics. Formulations with three and four layers exhibited Case II transport releasing diflunisal with zero order kinetics. Hence, our results suggest that these polyelectrolyte nanocapsules have great potential as a multifunctional nanocarrier for drug delivery applications.

Abstract
Wastes deriving from production of wines by yeast fermentation of Punica granatum (fermented pomegranate wastes, FPW) showed a marked antioxidant activity in a series of conventional chemical tests. HPLC/MS analysis of the methanol extract showed the presence of ellagic acid (EA) as the main phenolic component at levels up to 40% on a w/w basis. Experiments using murine macrophages showed that FPW extract is able to reduce the LPS-induced expression of pro-inflammatory genes IL-1β, TNF-α and iNOS. A remarkable increase in the antioxidant properties and extractable EA content was observed following acid hydrolytic treatment of FPW. Under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, EA was slowly released from FPW up to 80% of the overall content over 2 h incubation at the slightly alkaline pHs simulating the small intestine environment, suggesting a potential of the material in nutraceuticals and other applications.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds of pistachio green hull extract (PGHE) were incorporated into nanoliposomes (NLs). The NLs were prepared with different concentrations of phenolic compounds of PGHE (500, 750 and 1000 ppm) and particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential and encapsulation efficiency (EE) were investigated. The antioxidant activity of free and incorporated phenolic compounds of PGHE were evaluated in soybean oil during 39 days of storage by measuring peroxide (PV), thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values and color. The total phenolic content and IC50 (DPPH assay) of PGHE were 614.91 ± 0.45 mg gallic acid equivalent/g fresh weight of extract and 10 ± 0.05 μg/ml extract, respectively. The prepared NLs had 101.86-105.81 nm size and PDI = 0.202-0.235. The zeta potential value of NLs varied between -47.7 and -52.3 mV. The highest EE (32.47%) was observed for NLs containing 1000 ppm of phenolic compounds. The lowest PV and TBA values were related to free phenolic compounds at 500 mg/kg oil. In comparison with free phenolic compounds, loaded NLs had lower antioxidant activity, but encapsulation could improve the stability, gradual release and solubility of phenolic compounds in soybean oil. The color of NLs containing oil samples remained constant during the storage, but free phenolic compounds changed the oil`s color. All concentrations of free and incorporated phenolic compounds had also higher antioxidant activity than BHT. Finally, 500 ppm of phenolic compounds of PGHE in its incorporated forms could be recommended as a substitute for synthetic antioxidant in soybean oil.

Abstract
The formulation of a potential delivery system based on liposomes (Lips) formulated from soy lecithin (SL) for paclitaxel (PTX) was achieved (PTX-Lips). At first, PTX-Lips were prepared by thin film method using SL and cholesterol and then were characterized for their physiochemical properties (particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and morphology). The results indicated that PTX-Lips were spherical in shape with a dynamic light scattering (DLS) particle size of 131 ± 30.5 nm. Besides, PTX was efficiently encapsulated in Lips, 94.5 ± 3.2% for drug loading efficiency, and slowly released up to 96 h, compared with free PTX. More importantly, cell proliferation kit I (MTT) assay data showed that Lips were biocompatible nanocarriers, and in addition the incorporation of PTX into Lips has been proven successful in reducing the toxicity of PTX. As a result, development of Lips using SL may offer a stable delivery system and promising properties for loading and sustained release of PTX in cancer therapy.

Abstract
Aggregation is frequently encountered during coating nanoparticles, especially when the core is not solid and the coating polyelectrolytes are weak. Here, the coating of a nanoliposome with two weak polyelectrolytes, alginate and chitosan, is investigated. First, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses confirm the feasibility of firm adsorption of up to 16 layers of weak polyelectrolytes to the liposomal surface. Titrations are then performed to identify the lowest amounts of polyelectrolytes required to make eight saturated coating layers using the washless method. Significantly improved yields and reproducibility (almost 100%) are achieved, in addition to control over layer thickness. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies confirm the success of layering. This is special since scientists always attempt to reduce nanoparticle aggregation by substituting the soft core, using one strong polyelectrolyte, or contending with lower yields or numbers of coating layers.

Abstract
Oral delivery via the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the dominant route for drug administration. Orally delivered liposomal carriers can enhance drug solubility and protect the encapsulated theraputic agents from the extreme conditions found in the GI tract. Liposomes, with their fluid lipid bilayer membrane and their nanoscale size, can significantly improve oral absorption. Unfortunately, the clinical applications of conventional liposomes have been hindered due to their poor stability and availability under the harsh conditions typically presented in the GI tract. To overcome this problem, the surface modification of liposomes has been investigated. Although liposome surface modification has been extensively studied for oral drug delivery, no review exists so far that adequately covers this topic. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and critically analyze emerging trends in liposome surface modification for oral drug delivery.
