Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a worldwide-concerning disease with a rising prevalence. There are many ongoing studies aimed at finding new and effective treatments. Ellagic acid (EA) is a natural polyphenolic compound abundant in certain fruits and vegetables. It is the objective of this investigation to assess the effectiveness and preventive mechanisms of EA on DM and associated complications. This systematic review used PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar as search databases using a predetermined protocol from inception to June 2024. We assessed all related English studies, including in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials. EA counteracted DM and its complications by diminishing inflammation, oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, apoptosis, insulin resistance, obesity, lipid profile, and histopathological alterations. Several mechanisms contributed to the anti-diabetic effect of EA, the most significant being the upregulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), protein kinase B, and downregulation of nuclear factor-kappa-B (NF-κB) gene expression. EA also revealed protective effects against diabetes complications, such as diabetic-induced hepatic damage, testicular damage, endothelial dysfunction, muscle dysfunction, retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiomyopathy, neuropathy, and behavioral deficit. Administration of EA could have various protective effects in preventing, treating, and alleviating DM and its complications. Although it could be considered a cost-effective, safe, and accessible treatment, to fully establish the effectiveness of EA as a medication for DM, it is crucial to conduct further well-designed studies.

Abstract
Introduction Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of pathological conditions well described in humans but still investigated insufficiently in animals. A novel approach in its management is the utilisation of nutrients from natural sources. Recent studies suggested that phenolic compounds from pomegranate peel could be a promising dietary intervention for MetS. This study evaluated the potency of polyphenol-rich pomegranate peel extract (EPP) in mitigating some MetS components in an animal model. Material and Methods Zucker diabetic fatty rats (with an fa/fa missense mutation in the Lepr leptin receptor gene) and their healthy counterparts (fa/+) as controls were fed a high-calorie diet to induce MetS and supplemented with EPP at two doses: 100 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) and 200 mg/kg b.w. The extract was administered for eight weeks. The rats' body weights were monitored twice per week, and blood samples were taken before EPP administration after four weeks and eight weeks of study. Echocardiography measurement was performed at the beginning and at the end of the study. Results The extract restrained the dynamic of weight gain. A cardioprotective effect of the highest dose of EPP supplementation was manifested in a relative decrease in heart rate and improved mid-fractional shortening, representing myocardial contractility. No improvement in fasting blood glucose or lipid profile was observed. Conclusion Pomegranate peel extract possesses beneficial health properties that could be useful in dietary intervention in MetS. However, its bioavailability still requires further investigation in clinical trials in humans and animals suffering from endocrine and metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Type II diabetes mellitus and its related complications are growing public health problems. Many natural products present in our diet, including polyphenols, can be used in treating and managing type II diabetes mellitus and different diseases, owing to their numerous biological properties. Anthocyanins, flavonols, stilbenes, curcuminoids, hesperidin, hesperetin, naringenin, and phenolic acids are common polyphenols found in blueberries, chokeberries, sea-buckthorn, mulberries, turmeric, citrus fruits, and cereals. These compounds exhibit antidiabetic effects through different pathways. Accordingly, this review presents an overview of the most recent developments in using food polyphenols for managing and treating type II diabetes mellitus, along with various mechanisms. In addition, the present work summarizes the literature about the anti-diabetic effect of food polyphenols and evaluates their potential as complementary or alternative medicines to treat type II diabetes mellitus. Results obtained from this survey show that anthocyanins, flavonols, stilbenes, curcuminoids, and phenolic acids can manage diabetes mellitus by protecting pancreatic β-cells against glucose toxicity, promoting β-cell proliferation, reducing β-cell apoptosis, and inhibiting α-glucosidases or α-amylase. In addition, these phenolic compounds exhibit antioxidant anti-inflammatory activities, modulate carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, optimize oxidative stress, reduce insulin resistance, and stimulate the pancreas to secrete insulin. They also activate insulin signaling and inhibit digestive enzymes, regulate intestinal microbiota, improve adipose tissue metabolism, inhibit glucose absorption, and inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end products. However, insufficient data are available on the effective mechanisms necessary to manage diabetes.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a widespread endocrine disorder globally. Due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, ellagic acid has the potential to improve the metabolic effects of chronic non-communicable diseases. This systematic review summarizes current evidence about the potential effects of ellagic acid on metabolic variables in diabetes mellitus. A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, ProQuest and Google Scholar from inception until March 2022. All animal studies and clinical trials were eligible for inclusion. Studies using in vitro models or published in a non-English language were excluded. Of 1320 articles, 23 were selected for assessment, including 21 animal studies and two randomized controlled trial studies. Following ellagic acid administration, findings reported improvement in FBS, HbA1c, insulin (20, 8 and 12 studies, respectively), TG, TC, HDL-C (13, 10 and 5 studies, respectively), MDA, GSH, CAT, SOD (11, 6, 3 and 4 studies, respectively), and TNF-α and IL-6 (6 and 3 studies, respectively). In conclusion, ellagic acid may improve glycaemic indicators, dyslipidaemia, oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetes mellitus. However, further clinical trials are needed to explore the mechanisms more precisely and to observe the applied consequences.

Abstract
Pomegranate is an ancient shrub, globally distributed nowadays. It has been used in the middle east as a medicinal food and traditional medicine for thousands of years. Pomegranate peel (PP) constitutes about 50% of the total fruit, however, it has been previously regarded as a waste. Recent research points to PP as a rich source of phenolics (e.g., ellagitannins, flavonoids, and anthocyanins), polysaccharides, in addition to its biotransformed metabolites viz. urolithins making it a valuable waste with promising pharmacological actions. Compared to the pulp and the juice, PP exhibited stronger antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Besides, it inhibited inflammation in several conditions, including colitis, arthritis, hepatitis, contact dermatitis, and lung inflammation. Moreover, it displayed anti-osteoporosis, anti-hyperglycemic, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, vasculoprotective, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory effects. Additionally, it was effective as a prebiotic and in obesity control, besides it promoted wound healing. Furthermore, PP demonstrated anticancer effects against different cancer types, for example, colon, liver, thyroid, uterine, breast, bladder, prostate, leukemia, and osteosarcoma. Despite PP safety, it may interfere with the metabolism of other drugs because it inhibits cytochromes (CYP) changing their bioavailability, effectiveness, and toxicity. PP biowaste valorization not only avoids against its environmental and economic burden but can also provide a promising platform to produce novel or improved nutraceuticals. This study provides a comprehensive overview of PP biological activities with the reported action mechanisms related to its phytochemicals and further biotransformed metabolites inside the body. Future research prospects to unravel the merits of such waste and optimize its use are discussed. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Pomegranate is widely distributed throughout the world. Although its peel was previously considered a waste, recent research regards it as a rich source of bioactive compounds with promising biological activities. Its recycling not only overcomes the bio-waste problems, but also provides a source of valuable compounds with several health benefits. In recent years, PP has been demonstrated to exhibit excellent pharmacological bioactivities, for example, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiosteoporosis, antihyperlipidemic, and anticancer activities. Its health-promoting power is mostly attributed to the phenolic and polysaccharide content, in addition to its amazing biotransformed metabolites. The underlying action mechanisms of such pharmacological activities are discussed and related to its chemical content. This review presents the latest research progress on the role of PP in the prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases, and its protective health effects for future research to be used in nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Introduction: The principal mechanism responsible for reducing blood glucose is through insulin-stimulated glucose transport into skeletal muscle. The transporter protein that mediates this uptake is GLUT-4. A defect in this step is associated with reduced glucose utilization in muscle and adipose tissue, as observed in insulin-resistant type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. This study aimed to develop an experimental T2DM model and evaluate altered glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT-4) levels as a biomarker of insulin resistance. Antidiabetic activities of Syzygium cumini hydro-ethanolic seed extracts (SCE) were also evaluated. Methods: Adult male Wistar albino rats were fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks and dosed intraperitoneally with streptozotocin (35 mg/kg). After treatment for 21 days, all investigations were done. The homeostasis model of assessment (HOMA) was used for the calculation of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and beta-cell function (HOMA-B) index. Diaphragm muscle and retroperitoneal fat were collected for real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) studies. Results: A significant increase in fasting blood glucose, HOMA-IR, and serum lipids, and a decrease in serum insulin and HOMA-B were observed in the diabetic group, effects that reversed following pioglitazone and SCE treatment. The diabetic group showed a downregulation of GLUT-4 expression in skeletal muscle while an increase was observed in adipose tissue. Conclusion: A high-fat diet and low dose streptozotocin-induced experimental T2DM model of insulin resistance was developed to screen novel insulin sensitizers. Data generated demonstrated that altered GLUT-4 levels could be used as a biomarker of insulin resistance. Antidiabetic activity of S. cumini hydro-ethanolic seed extract was also confirmed in this study.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, is becoming epidemic both in developing and developed countries in recent years. Vegetable and fruit consumptions have been associated with the prevention of metabolic syndrome. Pomegranate is a widely consumed fruit in Middle East and Asia. Currently, accumulating data showed that pomegranate exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic activities in experimental and clinical studies. The beneficial effects of pomegranate may come from its rich polyphenols and be mediated by increasing the activity of AMPK, upregulating GLUT4, activating PPAR[Formula: see text]- ABCA1/CYP7A1 pathways and improving mitochondrial function. This review provides a systematical presentation of findings on the beneficial effects as well as the possible mechanisms of pomegranate and its major components on prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that results in distorted insulin signaling and microvascular complications. Current antidiabetic drugs possess harmful long term side effects, necessitating the need for alternate or compliment therapy with lesser issues. Medicinal plants such as ginger have been reported to possess several beneficial activities including antidiabetic activity. The antidiabetic efficacy of microwave-assisted polyphenolic extracts of Indian ginger cultivars from Odisha (MPO) and Tamil Nadu (MPT) is reported here. MPT and MPO showed insulin stimulated glucose uptake of 1.74 ± 0.25 and 1.47 ± 0.15 fold at 6.25 µg/ml of concentrations in C2C12 cells respectively when compared to control. MPT possessed α-amylase, α-glucosidase inhibitory and anti-glycation properties. It also showed DPPH radical scavenging activity (7.69 ± 0.001%), inhibited LPS-induced nitric oxide production (1.06 ± 0.004 fold) than the latter and increased the GLUT4 protein expression by 1.4 fold. Major active compounds such as shogaol and gingerol derivatives, curcumene, zingiberone were identified through GC-ESI/MS analysis and D-pinitol (cyclitol) was identified through HPLC analysis in this variety. This is the first paper to report the presence of an antidiabetic compound, D-pinitol, in the ginger variety. Polyphenol rich, biologically potent ginger extracts can be a good food and nutraceutical supplement to address diabetes and related complications. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Ginger is a native spice of South Asian Countries including India. Ginger extracts possess several medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and antioxidant activities. It is used to treat nausea, vomiting and commonly used as a food flavouring agent and dietary food supplement. Our study shows the antidiabetic, anti-glycation and antioxidant efficacy of polyphenol rich Indian ginger cultivars grown in different geographical regions. Variations in the biological activities between the MPT and MPO ginger variety was observed. Different environmental conditions and their corresponding metabolite accumulation can be correlated with the better activity shown by MPT variety. It showed an increased GLUT4 expression even at a lower dose of 6.25 µg/ml. Ginger cultivar, especially MPT variety can be used as an adjuvant therapy for treating diabetes. Therefore, our study indicates that polyphenols rich ginger cultivar has major application in functional food product development.

Abstract
Diabetes is a disease of serious concern faced by the health care industry today. Primary diabetes mellitus and its complications are still costly to manage with modern drugs. Extensive research on the screening of anti-diabetic agents in past decades established natural products as one of the major potential sources of drug discovery. However, only a few drugs of plant origin have been scientifically validated. Therefore, the development of new anti-diabetic drugs is of great demand. Hence, natural products could be explored as potential anti-diabetic drugs. Natural plants derived extracts and molecules like berberine, ginsenosides, curcumin, stevioside, gingerols, capsaicin, catechins, simple phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, resveratrol, genistein and hesperidin obtained from different species are used for curing diabetes and found to possess different action mechanisms. In this review, the importance of medicinal plants and their active constituents for anti-diabetic agents are described. The present study also emphasized the importance of diabetes control, reduction in its complications and use of the anti-diabetic agents. The detailed action mechanism of these extracts/compounds for their activities are also described. However, the anti-diabetic drugs from plant origin require scientific validation through animal and clinical studies to exploit in terms of modern commercial medicines.

Abstract
This work reports the production of MEL-A using coconut water as the carbon source. Proximate analysis of coconut water indicated the presence of nutrients necessary for growth of the organism and production of desired metabolite. The amount of MEL produced using coconut water was 3.85 g/L (± 0.35) with 74% of it being MEL-A when compared to 2.58 g/L (± 0.15) with 60% being MEL-A using glycerol, a conventional carbon source. MEL-A from coconut water consisted of 38.1% long-chain saturated fatty acids (C16:0 and C18:0) whereas with glycerol it was 9.6%. The critical micellar concentration of the biosurfactant from coconut water was 2.32 ± 0.21 µM when compared to 4.41 ± 0.25 µM from glycerol. The stability of O/W emulsion was reduced by 50% and 90% after incubation for 8 h in the case of MEL-A from coconut water and glycerol respectively when compared to synthetic surfactant, Tween-20. MEL-A from both the sources exhibited free radical scavenging activity (DPPH assay) in a dose-dependent manner wherein MEL-A from coconut water showed two fold higher activity than the other. The interaction of coconut water MEL-A with DPPC for drug encapsulation applications was also studied. The DSC measurements showed the differences in the interaction of drugs with DPPC/MEL-A liposome. The differences were also observed in the solubility of drugs after encapsulation with DPPC/MEL-A liposome.

Abstract
Effects of red raspberry extract (RRE) intake on hyperlipidemia mice induced by high-fat diet (HFD) were investigated in this study. After intragastric gavage of RRE for 8 weeks, the body weight and the adipose tissue mass of mice in RRE administration groups significantly (p < 0.05) decreased compared to the group without RRE treatment. RRE treatment significantly (p < 0.05) lowered triglyceride and total cholesterol levels of hyperlipidemia mice. Pparα, Hmgcr, Ldlr, Cyp7a1, Acsl3, Pnpla2 and Pin4 were confirmed as the regulatory genes by transcriptome analysis and qRCR validation. According to KEGG pathway analysis, target genes such as Cyp7a1 and Pin4 were further regulated by the activation of PPARα resulting from RRE supplementation. Meanwhile, liver cholesterol synthesis and conversion were inhibited by the expressions of Hmgcr and Cyp7a1 genes regulated by RRE intake, and Ldlr gene was down-regulated to limit the transport of cholesterol. In addition, RRE treatment could accelerate the conversion from triglyceride to fatty acid. To conclusion, RRE intake would be a protection against diet-induced hypertriglyceridemia.

Abstract
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease resulting from the loss of pancreatic β cells and subsequent insulin production. Novel interventional therapies are urgently needed that can protect existing β cells from cytokine-induced death and enhance their function before symptomatic onset. Our initial evidence is suggesting that bioactive ingredients within Cornus officinalis (CO) may be able to serve in this function. CO has been extensively used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and reported to possess both anti-inflammatory and pro-metabolic effects. We hypothesize that CO treatment may provide a future potential candidate for interventional therapy for early stage T1D prior to significant β cell loss. Our data demonstrated that CO can inhibit cytokine-mediated β cell death, increase cell viability and oxidative capacity, and increase expression of NFATC2 (Nuclear Factor of Activated T Cells, Cytoplasmic 2). We have also profiled the bioactive components in CO from multiple sources by HPLC/MS (High Performance Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) analysis. Altogether, CO significantly increases the energy metabolism of β cells while inducing the NFAT pathway to signal for increased proliferation and endocrine function.

Abstract
AIMS The world's population is becoming aged and the proportion of older persons is growing in almost every country in the world. Ellagic acid (EA) shows abundant pharmacological properties. Therefore, we aimed to determine the mechanism of anti-aging effects of low and high doses of EA. MAIN METHODS Aging model was induced by d-galactose (DG), and the anti-aging effect of EA alone or in the presence of PPAR-γ antagonist GW9662, and in combination with metformin were evaluated. The activities of ALT, AST, and AChE, the levels of FBS, HbA1c, testosterone and DHEA-SO4, MDA, GSH, TNF-α, IL-6, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and BDNF were measured in serum, liver or brain. KEY FINDINGS DG led to increasing in the levels of IL-6, TNF-α, MDA, AChE, AGEs, ALT, AST, FBS, and HbA1c, in which decrease in the levels of body weight, GSH, BDNF, DHEA-SO4 and testosterone. Metformin (300 mg/kg) abrogated the effects of DG-induced aging model. We also found that the low dose of EA (30 mg/kg) decreases the deteriorative effects of DG-induced aging at 10 weeks of treatment only, however, high dose of EA (100 mg/kg) was effective at both 6 and 10 weeks of treatment. The addition of GW9662 completely reversed the effects of the low dose of EA, but not for the high dose, on DG-induced aging model. SIGNIFICANCE We revealed that daily and oral administration of EA provides anti-aging effects at low dose in a PPAR-γ receptor-dependent fashion, but not at the high dose.

Abstract
AIMS Diabetes mellitus (DM), a chronic metabolic disease, is associated with behavioral deficits. It has been suggested that ellagic acid (EA), a natural polyphenol compound, has potent anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. The present study was aimed to explore the potential protective effects of EA against diabetes-associated behavioral deficits and verified possible involved mechanisms. MAIN METHODS Fifty adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: i.e., CON: normal rats treated with vehicle (5 ml/kg/day; P.O.), EA: normal rats treated with EA (50 mg/kg/day; P.O.), STZ: diabetic rats treated with vehicle (5 ml/kg/day; P.O.), STZ + INS: diabetic rats treated with insulin (6 IU/rat/day; S.C.), STZ + EA: diabetic rats treated with EA (50 mg/kg/day; P.O.). All the groups were under treatment for eight consecutive weeks. During the seventh and eighth weeks, behavioral functions of the rats were assessed by commonly used behavioral tests. Subsequently, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, neurotrophic factors, and also histological changes were evaluated in both cerebral cortex and hippocampus of the rats. KEY FINDINGS Chronic EA treatment attenuated anxiety/depression-like behaviors, improved exploratory/locomotor activities, and ameliorated cognitive deficits in diabetic rats. These results were accompanied by decreased blood glucose levels, modulation of inflammation status, improved neurotrophic support, and amelioration of neuronal loss in diabetic rats. In some aspects, treatment with EA was even more effective than insulin therapy. SIGNIFICANCE The current work's data confirms that EA could potentially serve as a novel, promising, and accessible protective agent against diabetes-associated behavioral deficits, owing to its anti-hyperglycemic, anti-inflammatory, and neurotrophic properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pioglitazone is an effective drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The drug was suspended from Indian market in June 2013 due to the risk of bladder cancer but was reintroduced in July 2013 because its benefits outweighed the risks. The risks associated with pioglitazone can be minimized if its dose is reduced. HYPOTHESIS Ellagic acid, a polyphenolic antioxidant, is reported to reduce blood sugar in diabetic rats. The mechanism of anti-diabetic action of ellagic acid is not known. Drugs with same pharmacological action but different mechanism may act in synergistic way when combined together. The combination of ellagic acid with pioglitazone could enhance its activity and hence reduce its dose. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Diabetes was induced in Wistar rats by intraperitoneal administration of 175 mg of nicotinamide/kg body weight in combination with 65 mg of streptozotocin/kg body weight and then fed with high fat diet for 4 weeks (Group II-VII). Non-diabetic rats were fed with normal chow diet (Group I). Group I and II received vehicle only whereas group III to VII received ellagic acid, pioglitazone or their combination. The treatment was given orally once a day for 21 days. RESULTS The induction of type 2 diabetes in rats caused increase in blood glucose, LDL, triglyceride, and cholesterol and decrease in HDL. The diabetic rats showed improvement in hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, liver and kidney function markers after treatment with ellagic acid, pioglitazone or their combinations. A combination of 10 mg of ellagic acid/kg BW with 10 mg of pioglitazone/kg BW resulted in significant improvement in all the biochemical parameters when compared to any of the individual treatment. The treatment of diabetic rats with the same combination significantly increased the expression levels of GLUT4, PPAR-γ and adiponectin in skeletal muscle. CONCLUSION The present study indicates that the dose of pioglitazone, required to achieve normoglycemia in diabetic rats, can be reduced by two folds by combining it with ellagic acid. The combinations reported here can be superior, since dose associated side effects and toxicity of the pioglitazone can be reduced.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that rambutan peel phenolic (RPP) extract demonstrate high antioxidant and antiglycation activities in vitro and in vivo. This study further evaluated the anti-diabetic activity of RPP in a mouse model of Type II diabetes induced by streptozotocin combined with high-fat diet. Results showed that RPP increased the body weight and reduced the fasting blood glucose level of the diabetic mice. RPP significantly reduced the serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, creatinine, and glycated serum protein in diabetic mice in a dose-dependent manner. Glycogen content in mice liver was recovered by RPP, which further increased the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and reduced lipid peroxidation in diabetic mice. Histological analysis showed that RPP effectively protected the tissue structure of the liver, kidney, and pancreas. In addition, RPP decreased the mesangial index and inhibited the expression of TGF-β in the kidney of diabetic mice.

Abstract
Coumarins are natural polyphenol lactones comprising of fused rings of benzene and α-pyrone. The current study demonstrates the inhibitory effect of coumarins with various substitutions on Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2 155. We also demonstrate the effect of pomegranate (Punica granatum) extract containing ellagic acid, on M. smegmatis as well as their affect on MtbFtsZ (FtsZ from Mycobacterium tuberculosis). The ellagic acid extracts from pomegranate peels inhibit mycobacteria with a MIC of 25 μM and 0.3 to 3.5 mg/mL, respectively, but failed to inhibit the polymerization of MtbFtsZ. However, the coumarins were shown to inhibit the polymerization and GTPase activity of the protein as well as have an inhibitory affect on M. smegmatis mc2 155. Docking of the most active coumarin (7-Dimethyl-4-methyl coumarin with MIC of 38.7 μM) to the GTP binding site suggests that it interacted with the G103 residue. Based on the docking results two mutants of varying activity (G103S and G103A) were constructed to elucidate the interaction of MtbFtsZ and coumarins. Mutation of G103 with Serine (a bulky group) results in an inactive mutant and substitution with alanine produces a variant that retains most of the activity of the wild type. There is a disruption of the protofilament formation of the MtbFtsZ upon interaction with coumarins as demonstrated by TEM. The coumarins increase the length of Mycobacteria five times and MtbFtsZ localization is disturbed. The mutant proteins altered the GTPase and polymerization activity of coumarins as compared to wild type protein. The results here support that coumarins inhibit proliferation of Mycobacteria by targeting the assembly of MtbFtsZ and provide the possible binding site of coumarins on MtbFtsZ. This study may aid in the design of natural products as anti-mycobacterial agents. The currently reported GTP analogs for FtsZ are toxic to the human cell lines; natural coumarins targeting the GTP binding site of MtbFtsZ may hold promise as an important drug lead for tuberculosis treatment.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become a major public health threat across the globe. Current antidiabetic therapies are based on synthetic drugs that very often have side effects. It has been widely acknowledged that diet plays an important role in the management of diabetes. Phenolic acids are widely found in daily foods such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, and wine and they provide biological, medicinal, and health properties. Simple phenolic acids have been shown to increase glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis, improve glucose and lipid profiles of certain diseases (obesity, cardiovascular diseases, DM, and its complication). The current review is an attempt to list out the antidiabetic effects of simple phenolic acids from medicinal plants and botanical foods.
