Abstract
Polyphenolic compounds have received tremendous attention in biomedicine because of their good biocompatibility and unique physicochemical properties. In recent years, phenolic-enabled nanotechnology (PEN) has become a hotspot of research in the medical field, and many promising studies have been reported, especially in the application of central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Polyphenolic compounds have superior anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and can easily cross the blood‒brain barrier, as well as protect the nervous system from metabolic damage and promote learning and cognitive functions. However, although great advances have been made in this field, a comprehensive review regarding PEN-based nanomaterials for CNS therapy is lacking. A systematic summary of the basic mechanisms and synthetic strategies of PEN-based nanomaterials is beneficial for meeting the demand for the further development of novel treatments for CNS diseases. This review systematically introduces the fundamental physicochemical properties of PEN-based nanomaterials and their applications in the treatment of CNS diseases. We first describe the different ways in which polyphenols interact with other substances to form high-quality products with controlled sizes, shapes, compositions, and surface chemistry and functions. The application of PEN-based nanomaterials in the treatment of CNS diseases is then described, which provides a reference for subsequent research on the treatment of CNS diseases.

Abstract
The genus Rhododendron is an ancient and most widely distributed genus of the family Ericaceae consisting of evergreen plant species that have been utilized as traditional medicine since a very long time for the treatment of various ailments including pain, asthma, inflammation, cold, and acute bronchitis. The chemistry of polyphenolics isolated from a number of species of the genus Rhododendron has been investigated. During the currently designed study, an in-depth study on the phytochemistry, natural distribution, biosynthesis, and pharmacological properties including their potential capability as free radical scavengers has been conducted. This work provides structural characteristics of phenolic compounds isolated from the species of Rhododendron with remarkable antioxidant potential. In addition, biosynthesis and theranostic study have also been encompassed with the aims to furnish a wide platform of valuable information for designing of new drug entities. The detailed information including names, structural features, origins, classification, biosynthetic pathways, theranostics, and pharmacological effects of about 171 phenolics and flavonoids isolated from the 36 plant species of the genus Rhododendron with the antioxidant potential has been covered in this manuscript. This study demonstrated that species of Rhododendron genus have excellent antioxidant activities and great potential as a source for natural health products. This comprehensive review might serve as a foundation for more investigation into the Rhododendron genus.

Abstract
Cancer remains a highly lethal disease globally. The approach centered on REDOX-targeted mitochondrial therapy for cancer has displayed notable benefits. Plant polyphenols exhibit strong REDOX and anticancer properties, particularly by affecting mitochondrial function, yet their structural instability and low bioavailability hinder their utility. To overcome this challenge, researchers have utilized the inherent physical and chemical characteristics of polyphenols and their derivatives to develop innovative nanomedicines for targeting mitochondria. This review examines the construction strategies and anticancer properties of various types of polyphenol-based biological nanomedicine for regulating mitochondria in recent years, such as polyphenol self-assembly, metal-phenol network, polyphenol-protein, polyphenol-hydrogel, polyphenol-chitosan, and polyphenol-liposome. These polyphenolic nanomedicines incorporate enhanced features such as improved solubility, efficient photothermal conversion capability, regulation of mitochondrial homeostasis, and ion adsorption through diverse construction strategies. The focus is on how these polyphenol nanomedicines promote ROS production and their mechanism of targeting mitochondria to inhibit cancer. Furthermore, it delves into the benefits and applications of polyphenolic nanomedicine in cancer treatments, as well as the challenges for future research.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that Ephrin receptors may be upregulated in several types of cancers including breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers, making them a target for drug design. In this work, we have utilized a target-hopping approach to design new natural product-peptide conjugates and examined their interactions with the kinase-binding domain of EphB4 and EphB2 receptors. The peptide sequences were generated through point mutations of the known EphB4 antagonist peptide TNYLFSPNGPIA. Their anticancer properties and secondary structures were analyzed computationally. Conjugates of most optimum of peptides were then designed by binding the N-terminal of the peptides with the free carboxyl group of the polyphenols sinapate, gallate and coumarate, which are known for their inherent anticancer properties. To investigate if these conjugates have a potential to bind to the kinase domain, we carried out docking studies and MMGBSA free energy calculations of the trajectories based on the molecular dynamics simulations, with both the apo and the ATP bound kinase domains of both receptors. In most cases binding interactions occurred within the catalytic loop region, while in some cases the conjugates were found to spread out across the N-lobe and the DFG motif region. The conjugates were further tested for prediction of pharmacokinetic properties using ADME studies. Our results indicated that the conjugates were lipophilic and MDCK permeable with no CYP interactions. These findings provide an insight into the molecular interactions of these peptides and conjugates with the kinase domain of the EphB4 and EphB2 receptor. As a proof of concept, we synthesized and carried out SPR analysis with two of the conjugates (gallate-TNYLFSPNGPIA and sinapate-TNYLFSPNGPIA). Results indicated that the conjugates showed higher binding with the EphB4 receptor and minimal binding to EphB2 receptor. Sinapate-TNYLFSPNGPIA showed inhibitory activity against EphB4. These studies reveal that some of the conjugates may be developed for further investigation into in vitro and in vivo studies and potential development as therapeutics.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS), a bio-renewable natural material, has the potential to be utilized as a biopolymer for food packaging films (PFs)/coatings. However, its low solubility in dilute acid solutions and poor antioxidant and antimicrobial activities limit its application in PFs/coatings. To address these restrictions, chemical modification of CS has garnered increasing interest, with graft copolymerization being the most extensively used method. Phenolic acids (PAs) as natural small molecules are used as excellent candidates for CS grafting. This work focuses on the progress of CS grafted PA (CS-g-PA) based films, introducing the chemistry and methods of preparing CS-g-PA, particularly the effects of different PAs grafting on the properties of CS films. In addition, this work discusses the application of different CS-g-PA functionalized PFs/coatings for food preservation. It is concluded that the food preservation capability of CS-based films/coatings can be improved by modifying the properties of CS-based films through PA grafting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous positive effects have been attributed to lutein, a lipophilic nutrient, including resisting ultraviolet radiation and protecting retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells against blue light damage. It also has preventive effects against cardiovascular disease and cancer. However, its use could be limited by its poor stability and low bioaccessibility in the human digestive system. An encapsulation delivery system was therefore developed to resolve these limitations. In this study, chitosan-modified lutein nanoliposomes (CS-LNLs), chitosan-EGCG covalently modified lutein nanoliposomes (C-CS-EGCG-LNLs), and chitosan-EGCG noncovalently modified lutein nanoliposomes (non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs) were designed. The average particle size, ζ-potential, and retention of lutein during storage were measured to indicate the physicochemical stability of the modified lutein nanoliposomes. The bioaccessibility of modified lutein nanoliposomes was also investigated to demonstrate the availability of lutein in the human digestive system. RESULTS First, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) verified that covalent bonds between chitosan and EGCG were formed. Subsequently, ζ-potential results revealed that C-CS-EGCG-LNLs had a relatively stable structure in comparison with lutein nanoliposomes (LNLs). The retention rate of lutein in CS-LNLs, C-CS-EGCG-LNLs, and non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs was improved, especially in C-CS-EGCG-LNLs (at around 70% of lutein in initial system). An in vitro digestion experiment illustrated that CS-LNLs, C-CS-EGCG-LNLs, and non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs presented relatively higher bioaccessibility, especially in C-CS-EGCG-LNLs (at around 33% of luein in initial system), which increased 2.5 and 1.65 times in comparison with free lutein and LNLs, respectively. CONCLUSION Overall, the results showed that C-CS-EGCG-LNLs presented greater physicochemical stability and bioaccessibility than LNLs, CS-LNLs, and non-C-CS-EGCG-LNLs. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In recent years, microbial food safety has garnered a lot of attention due to worldwide expansion of the food industry and processed food products. This has driven the development of novel preservation methods over traditional ones. Food-derived antimicrobial peptides (F-AMPs), produced by the proteolytic degradation of food proteins, are emerging as pragmatic alternatives for extension of the shelf-life of food products. The main benefits of F-AMPs are their wide spectrum antimicrobial efficacy and low propensity for the development of antibiotic resistance. However, direct application of F-AMPs in food limits its efficacy during storage. Therefore, the development of nanocarriers for the conjugation and distribution of potential AMPs may hold great potential to increase their bioactivity. This review highlights the significance of F-AMPs as a feasible and sustainable alternative to conventional food preservatives. The most recent developments in production, characterization, and mode of action of these AMPs against planktonic and biofilm forming pathogens are thoroughly discussed in this work. Moreover, nano-conjugation of F-AMPs with different nano-carriers and potential future application in food packaging are emphasized. This review may aid in comprehending the nano-conjugation of F-AMPs and offer insightful recommendations for further exploration and potential uses in the food processing industry.

Abstract
Xylose is the second most abundant monosaccharide in nature, and gallic acid (GA) has properties of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. Hence, the gallate xylose (GX) polymers were synthesized from d-xylose and gallic acid for skin care applications in this paper. Then, the structure, generation mechanisms and the antioxidant activity of the generated polymer were studied. It got the results that: The generated GX polymers have strong antioxidant properties, yielded in 80.1% of GA mass. The DPPH scavenging activity was over 80.0% under the polymer's solution over 0.2 mg/mL. Moreover, the reaction mechanisms of DPPH removal were explained in a new theory based on Mass spectral analysis. Therefore, it demonstrates that the GX polymers of is a potential antioxidant material for skin care products, and it does contribution to the theory of DPPH removal for application in the fields of chemistry, biology and medicine researches.

Abstract
In this study, caffeic acid (CA) and chlorogenic acid (CGA) were incorporated onto chitosan (CS) using free radical grafting initiated by a hydrogen peroxide/ascorbic acid (H2O2/Vc) redox system. The structural properties of the CA (CA-g-CS) and CGA (CGA-g-CS) derivatives were characterized by UV-Vis absorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and thermal stability analysis. Then, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties were evaluated, and the effect of CGA-g-CS on the postharvest quality of Saimaiti apricot was studied. It proved that phenolic acids were successfully grafted onto the CS. The grafting ratios of CA-g-CS and CGA-g-CS were 126.21 mg CAE/g and 148.94 mg CGAE/g. The antioxidation and antibacterial activities of CGA-g-CS were better than those of CA-g-CS. The MICs of CGA-g-CS against E. coli, S. aureus, and B. subtilis were 2, 1, and 2 mg/mL. The inhibitory zones of 20 mg/mL CGA-g-CS against the three bacteria were 19.16 ± 0.35, 16.33 ± 0.91, and 16.24 ± 0.05 mm. The inhibitory effects of 0.5% CGA-g-CS on the firmness, weight loss, SSC, TA, relative conductivity, and respiration rate of the apricot were superior. Our results suggest that CGA-g-CS can be potentially used as an edible coating material to preserve apricots.

Abstract
Active ingredients of Chinese medicine (AIFCM) are pharmacological substances taken from traditional Chinese medicine that show promise in treating gastrointestinal cancer. Compared with traditional chemotherapeutic drugs, AIFCM have advantages such as multi-target and multi-level treatment
of gastrointestinal cancer. Nanocarriers have the following advantages, better bioavailability, passive or active targeting of tumor sites and responsive release of drugs. The use of nanocarriers for delivery of AIFCM in treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, can overcome the disadvantages
of some AIFCM, such as insolubility and low bioavailability. In this review, we first outline the background on gastrointestinal cancer, main curative factors and conventional therapeutic approaches. Then, the mechanisms for AIFCM in gastrointestinal cancer therapy are presented in the following
four aspects: gene regulation, immune modulation, cellular pathway transduction, and alteration of intestinal flora. Thirdly, preparation of various nanocarriers and results when combining AIFCM in gastrointestinal cancer are presented. Fourth, application of novel targeted nanocarriers and
responsive nanocarriers in gastrointestinal tumors is further introduced. Finally, the application of AIFCM in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer is summarized and prospected, hoping to shed some light on the nanocarrier-bound AIFCM in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is easily oxidized by environmental stress elements, including light, heat, and oxygen; thus, its biological activities can be reduced or even lost when exposed to a natural environment. Here, soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) was successfully etherized by 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC), positively charged to extract cationic SSPS (CSSPS). Nanoparticles based on CSSPS can improve the encapsulation efficiency (EE) and sustained bioactivity of EGCG. The EE of EGCG by CSSPS was improved significantly as compared with that of SSPS due to the electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the protective and sustained-release effects of CSSPS on EGCG in the EGCG-CSSPS nanoparticles (EGCG-CSSPS-NPs) markedly improved the sustained antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of EGCG, which was confirmed by the results of a salmon-preservation experiment. In addition, cytotoxicity tests showed that EGCG-CSSPS-NPs could effectively inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells but had no obvious toxicity to normal cells.

Abstract
Polyphenols represent a structural class of mainly natural organic chemicals that contain multiple phenol structural units. The beneficial properties of polyphenols have been extensively studied for their antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects, but nowadays, their medical applications are starting to be extended to many other applications due to their prebiotic role and their impact on the microbiota. This review focused on the use of polyphenols in cancer treatment. Their antineoplastic effects have been demonstrated in various studies when they were tested on numerous cancer lines and some in in vivo models. A431 and SCC13 human skin cancer cell lines treated with EGCG presented a reduced cell viability and enhanced cell death due to the inactivation of β-catenin signaling. Additionally, resveratrol showed a great potential against breast cancer mainly due to its ability to exert both anti-estrogenic and estrogenic effects (based on the concentration) and because it has a high affinity for estrogen receptors ERα and Erβ. Polyphenols can be combined with different classical cytostatic agents to enhance their therapeutic effects on cancer cells and to also protect healthy cells from the aggressiveness of antitumor drugs due to their anti-inflammatory properties. For instance, curcumin has been reported to reduce the gastrointestinal toxicity associated with chemotherapy. In the case of 5-FU-induced, it reduced the gastrointestinal toxicity by increasing the intestinal permeability and inhibiting mucosal damage. Co-administration of EGCG and doxorubicin induced the death of liver cancer cells. EGCG has the ability to inhibit autophagic activity and stop hepatoma Hep3B cell proliferation This symbiotic approach is well-known in medical practice including in multiple chemotherapy.

Abstract
In the present research, an orange extract (OE) was obtained and encapsulated in a zein matrix for its subsequent physicochemical characterization and evaluation of its antioxidant capacity. The OE consists of phenolic compounds and flavonoids extracted from orange peel (Citrus sinensis) by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The results obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that zein nanoparticles with orange extract (NpZOE) presented a nanometric size and spherical shape, presenting a hydrodynamic diameter of 159.26 ± 5.96 nm. Furthermore, ζ-potential evolution and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques were used to evaluate the interaction between zein and OE. Regarding antioxidant activity, ABTS and DPPH assays indicated no significant differences at high concentrations of orange peel extract and NpZOE; however, NpZOE was more effective at low concentrations. Although this indicates that ultrasonication as an extraction method effectively obtains the phenolic compounds present in orange peels, the nanoprecipitation method under the conditions used allowed us to obtain particles in the nanometric range with positive ζ-potential. On the other hand, the antioxidant capacity analysis indicated a high antioxidant capacity of both OE and the NpZOE. This study presents the possibility of obtaining orange extracts by ultrasound and coupling them to zein-based nanoparticulate systems to be applied as biomedical materials functionalized with antioxidant substances of pharmaceutical utility.

Abstract
Anthocyanins (ACNs) have attracted considerable research attention because of their excellent health benefits, but their low stability and bioavailability limit their applications. In this study, sinapic acid-grafted-chitosan (SA-g-CS) conjugate was synthesized by grafting SA onto CS via a free radical mediated method. Nanoparticles were prepared using casein (CA) together with SA-g-CS to improve the performance and sustained release of black rice anthocyanins (BRA). The results of UV-Vis, FTIR and 1H NMR spectra for SA-g-CS conjugates demonstrated the successful grafting of SA onto CS. The results of DPPH, ABTS and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power assays showed that the SA-g-CS conjugates had strong antioxidant capacities, and the higher the pH of the grafting reaction system, the stronger the antioxidant capacity of the conjugates. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses showed that the crystallographic property and microstructure of CS were improved by the grafting of SA. Compared with BRA loaded nanoparticles prepared with CA alone or the combination of CS and CA, the BRA loaded nanoparticles constructed by SA-g-CS and CA have smaller particle size, better dispersion, encapsulation efficiency and sustained-release property. These results provided great potential for the application of phenolic acid grafted CS in stabilizing ACNs.

Abstract
The emergence of new lifestyle disorders and pharmaco-resistant variants of diseases has necessitated the search for effective therapeutic moieties and approaches that could overcome the limitations in the existing treatment modalities. In this context, bioactives such as flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, terpenoids and alkaloids have demonstrated promise in therapy owing to their ability to scavenge free radicals and modulate the mitochondrial function as well as regulate metabolic pathways. However, their clinical applicability is low owing to their poor bioavailability and aqueous solubility. The encapsulation of bioactives in nanodimensional particles has overcome these limitations to a large extent while simultaneously conferring additional advantages of improved circulation time, enhanced cell uptake and target specific release. A wide range of nanocarriers derived from biopolymers such as polysaccharides, lipids and proteins, have been explored for encapsulation of different bioactives and have reported significant improvement of the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of the encapsulated cargo. However, incorporation of cell-specific and mitochondria-specific elements on the nanocarriers has been relatively less explored. This review summarizes some of the recent attempts to treat different disorders using bioactives encapsulated in biopolymer nanostructures and few instances of mitochondria-specific delivery.

Abstract
D101 macroporous resin combined with high speed counter-current chromatography (D101 MR-HSCCC) was used to separate gallic acid (GA) from Cornus officinalis, and GA was added to starch-based products to improve food quality. The interaction and action mechanism of corn starch (CS) with GA were investigated for prediction and thereby controlling the structure and functions of starch-based foods. Results show that GA with 98.72% purity was successfully obtained using the D101 MR-HSCCC technique. HSCCC solvent system was composed of n-hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (1:5:1:5, v/v/v/v). GA inhibited CS dissolution and improved CS swelling. Based on the particle size distribution, GA could enlarge the size of CS-GA complexes. FT-IR spectra exhibit that the interactions between CS and GA may comprise the intermolecular hydrogen bond and non-covalent bond. The results of XRD, LF-NMR and AFM show that the presence of GA could increase the relative crystallinity of CS, decrease the spin relaxation time (T2), and change the surface morphology of CS via the modification of hydrogen bonds distribution. Finally, SEM analysis indicates that GA could change the microstructure of CS-GA complexes. These findings facilitate the development of CS-based products and utilization of CS.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TP) have various biological functions including anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and bioengineered repair properties. However, TP exhibit poor stability and bioavailability in the gastrointestinal tract. Nanoencapsulation techniques can be used to protect TP and to uphold their original characteristics during processing, storage and digestion, improve their physiochemical properties and enhance their health promoting effects. Nano-embedded TP show higher antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer properties than TP, allowing TP to play a better role in bioengineering restoration after embedding. In this review, recent advances in nanoencapsulation of TP with biopolymeric nanocarriers (polysaccharides and proteins), lipid-based nanocarriers and innovative developments in preparation strategies were mainly discussed. Additionally, the strengthening biological functions of stability and bioavailability, antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer activities and bioengineering repair properties activities after the nano-embedding of TP have been considered. Finally, further studies could be conducted for exploring the application of nanoencapsulated systems in food for industrial applications.

PURPOSE We report herein bombesin peptide conjugated water-soluble chitosan gallate as a template for rapid one-pot synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with capabilities to target receptors on prostate cancer cells. METHODS Water-soluble chitosan (WCS), anchored with gallic acid (GA) and LyslLys3 (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclo dodecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid) bombesin 1-14 (DBBN) peptide, provides a tumor targeting nanomedicine agent. WCS nanoplatforms provide attractive strategies with built-in capabilities to reduce gold (III) to gold nanoparticles with stabilizing and tumor-targeting capabilities. WCS-GA-DBBN encapsulation around gold nanoparticles affords optimum in vitro stability. RESULTS The DBBN content in the WCS-GA-DBBN sample was ~27%w/w. The antioxidant activities of WCS-GA and WCS-GA-DBBN nanocolloids were enhanced by 12 times as compared to the nascent WCS. AuNPs with a desirable hydrodynamic diameter range of 40-60 nm have been efficiently synthesized using WCS-GA and WCS-GA-DBBN platforms. The AuNPs were stable over 4 days after preparation and ~3 days after subjecting to all relevant biological fluids. The AuNPs capped with WCS-GA-DBBN peptide exhibited superior cellular internalization into prostate tumor (PC-3) cells with evidence of receptor mediated endocytosis. CONCLUSION The AuNPs capped with WCS-GA-DBBN exhibited selective affinity toward prostate cancer cells. AuNPs conjugated with WCS-GA-DBBN serve as a new generation of theranostic agents for treating various neoplastic diseases, thus opening-up new applications in oncology.

Abstract
Tea manufactured from the cultivated shoots of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze is the most commonly consumed nonalcoholic drink around the world. Tea is an agro-based, environmentally sustainable, labor-intensive, job-generating, and export-oriented industry in many countries. Tea includes phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, vitamins, enzymes, crude fibers, protein, lipids, and carbohydrates, among other biochemical constituents. This review described the nature of tea metabolites, their biosynthesis and accumulation with response to various factors. The therapeutic application of various metabolites of tea against microbial diseases, cancer, neurological, and other metabolic disorders was also discussed in detail. The seasonal variation, cultivation practices and genetic variability influence tea metabolite synthesis. Tea biochemical constituents, especially polyphenols and its integral part catechin metabolites, are broadly focused on potential applicability for their action against various diseases. In addition to this, tea also contains bioactive flavonoids that possess health-beneficial effects. The catechin fractions, epigallocatechin 3-gallate and epicatechin 3-gallate, are the main components of tea that has strong antioxidant and medicinal properties. The synergistic function of natural tea metabolites with synthetic drugs provides effective protection against various diseases. Furthermore, the application of nanotechnologies enhanced bioavailability, enhancing the therapeutic potential of natural metabolites against numerous diseases and pathogens.

Abstract
In this study, a novel peptide grafted chitosan (CACS-FBP) with high peptide content, excellent moisture-absorption and moisture-retention abilities was prepared. Caffeic acid (CA) was used to modify chitosan, the highly water-soluble intermediate further reacted with fish bone collagen peptide to obtain the final product, and the synthesis of CACS-FBP was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), NMR, and UV-vis. The single-factor experiments indicated that the degree of substitution (DS) of CACS-FBP depended on the reaction temperature, reaction time, the mass ratio of fish bone collagen peptide to CACS (mFBP/mCACS) and the mass ratio of MTGase to CACS (mMTGase/mCACS). In addition, the antioxidant assay indicated that CACS-FBP had an excellent antioxidant capacity, and the CACS-FBP showed no cytotoxicity toward L929 mouse fibroblasts, all the results mean that the prepared peptide-containing chitosan derivative has potential application in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields.

Abstract
Advances in technology have led to the production of sustainable antioxidants and natural monomers for food packaging and targeted drug delivery applications. Of particular importance is the synthesis of lignin polymers, and graft polymers, dopamine, and polydopamine, inulin, quercetin, limonene, and vitamins, due to their free radical scavenging ability, chemical potency, ideal functional groups for polymerization, abundance in the natural environment, ease of production, and activation of biological mechanisms such as the inhibition of the cellular activation of various signaling pathways, including NF-κB and MAPK. The radical oxygen species are responsible for oxidative damage and increased susceptibility to cancer, cardiovascular, degenerative musculoskeletal, and neurodegenerative conditions and diabetes; such biological mechanisms are inhibited by both synthetic and naturally occurring antioxidants. The orientation of macromolecules in the presence of the plasticizing agent increases the suitability of quercetin in food packaging, while the commercial viability of terpenes in the replacement of existing non-renewable polymers is reinforced by the recyclability of the precursors (thyme, cannabis, and lemon, orange, mandarin) and marginal ecological effect and antioxidant properties. Emerging antioxidant nanoparticle polymers have a broad range of applications in tumor-targeted drug delivery, food fortification, biodegradation of synthetic polymers, and antimicrobial treatment and corrosion inhibition. The aim of the review is to present state-of-the-art polymers with intrinsic antioxidant properties, including synthesis scavenging activity, potential applications, and future directions. This review is distinct from other works given that it integrates different advances in antioxidant polymer synthesis and applications such as inulin, quercetin polymers, their conjugates, antioxidant-graft-polysaccharides, and polymerization vitamins and essential oils. One of the most comprehensive reviews of antioxidant polymers was published by Cirillo and Iemma in 2012. Since then, significant progress has been made in improving the synthesis, techniques, properties, and applications. The review builds upon existing research by presenting new findings that were excluded from previous reviews.

Abstract
This paper concerns the physicochemical properties of chitosan/phenolic acid thin films irradiated by ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths between 200 and 290 nm (UVC) light. We investigated the preparation and characterization of thin films based on chitosan (CTS) with tannic (TA), caffeic (CA) and ferulic acid (FA) addition as potential food-packaging materials. Such materials were then exposed to the UVC light (254 nm) for 1 and 2 h to perform the sterilization process. Different properties of thin films before and after irradiation were determined by various methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), mechanical properties and by the surface free energy determination. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of the films and their potential to reduce the risk of contamination was assessed. The results showed that the phenolic acid improving properties of chitosan-based films, short UVC radiation may be used as sterilization method for those films, and also that the addition of ferulic acid obtains effective antimicrobial activity, which have great benefit for food packing applications.

Abstract
Nanoantioxidants have emerged as smart devices able to provide improved stability and biocompatibility and sustained and targeted release of conventional antioxidants. In the current research, a new family of nanoantioxidants has been developed by covalently grafting gallic (GA), caffeic (CF) and ferulic (FR) acid on the surfaces of Tween 80 niosomes. First, empty and curcumin (CUR)-loaded vesicles were prepared using a thin-layer evaporation technique and then functionalized with phenolic acids using carbodiimide chemistry. Nanoantioxidants obtained were characterized in terms of size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and loading efficiency. Their antioxidant activity was studied by ABTS and DPPH assays. Surface functionalization of empty and CUR-loaded vesicles provided stable vesicles with intrinsic antioxidant properties. In vitro antioxidant assays highlighted that vesicles functionalized with FR or GA exhibited better antioxidant activity compared to CF-grafted niosomes. Furthermore, vesicles loaded with CUR and functionalized with GA and CF showed an enhanced scavenging ability of ABTS and DPPH radicals, compared to the single antioxidant-loaded formulations, highlighting an important synergic effect of CUR when used in combination with GA ad CF.

Abstract
Nanoparticles based on chitosan modified with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) were synthetized by nanoprecipitation (EGCG-g-chitosan-P). Chitosan was modified by free-radical-induced grafting, which was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Furthermore, the morphology, particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential of the nanoparticles were investigated. The grafting degree of EGCG, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, antibacterial and antioxidant activities of EGCG-g-chitosan-P were evaluated and compared with those of pure EGCG and chitosan nanoparticles (Chitosan-P). FTIR results confirmed the modification of the chitosan with EGCG. The EGCG-g-chitosan-P showed spherical shapes and smoother surfaces than those of Chitosan-P. EGCG content of the grafted chitosan nanoparticles was 330 μg/g. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of EGCG-g-chitosan-P (15.6 μg/mL) was lower than Chitosan-P (31.2 μg/mL) and EGCG (500 μg/mL) against Pseudomonas fluorescens (p < 0.05). Additionally, EGCG-g-chitosan-P and Chitosan-P presented higher Staphylococcus aureus growth inhibition (100%) than EGCG at the lowest concentration tested. The nanoparticles produced an increase of ROS (p < 0.05) in both bacterial species assayed. Furthermore, EGCG-g-chitosan-P exhibited higher antioxidant activity than that of Chitosan-P (p < 0.05) in 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power assays. Based on the above results, EGCG-g-chitosan-P shows the potential for food packaging and biomedical applications.

Abstract
The encapsulation of bioactive compounds is an emerging technique for finding new medicines since it provides protection against ambient degradation factors before reaching the target site. Nanotechnology provides new methods for encapsulating bioactive compounds and for drug carrier development. Nanocarriers satisfactorily impact the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion rate when compared to conventional carriers. The nanocarrier material needs to be compatible and bind to the drug and be bio-resorbable. In this context, the physicochemical characterization of encapsulated bioactive compounds is fundamental to guarantee the quality, reproducibility, and safety of the final pharmaceutical product. In this review, we present the physicochemical techniques most used today by researchers to characterize bioactive compounds in nanocarriers and the main information provided by each technique, such as morphology, size, degree of crystallinity, long-term stability, the efficacy of drug encapsulation, and the amount released as a function of time.

Abstract
Gallic acid (GA) is a naturally occurring polyphenol compound present in fruits, vegetables, and herbal medicines. According to previous studies, GA has many biological properties, including antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. GA and its derivatives have multiple industrial uses, such as food supplements or additives. Additionally, recent studies have shown that GA and its derivatives not only enhance gut microbiome (GM) activities, but also modulate immune responses. Thus, GA has great potential to facilitate natural defense against microbial infections and modulate the immune response. However, the exact mechanisms of GA acts on the GM and immune system remain unclear. In this review, first the physicochemical properties, bioavailability, absorption, and metabolism of GA are introduced, and then we summarize recent findings concerning its roles in gastrointestinal health. Furthermore, the present review attempts to explain how GA influences the GM and modulates the immune response to maintain intestinal health.

Abstract
In the last few years, great importance has been given to natural materials (such as walnuts, peanuts, chestnuts) due to their medicinal and pharmaceutical uses induced by the presence of natural agents, including polyphenols. Juglans regia is a traditional plant that has been used since ancient times in traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases like microbial infections, stomach ache, thyroid dysfunctions, cancer, heart diseases and sinusitis. Recently, scientific attention for the phytochemical profile of walnut by-products is increasing due to their valuable active constituents. Natural polyphenols are important compounds present in walnut with valuable properties that have been studied for the treatment of inflammation, cancer or anti-ageing effect. The use of nanocarriers as a drug delivery system is now a promising strategy to get more stable products and is easier to apply in a medical, therapeutic and pharmaceutical environment. The aim of this work was to review the latest information provided by scientific investigators regarding the nutritional value, bioactive compounds, antioxidant and antitumor activity of walnut by-product extracts. Moreover, this review provides comprehensive information on the nanoencapsulation of bioactive constituents for application in clinical medicine, particularly in cancer research.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a natural phenolic compound found in many plants, especially in green tea, which is a popular and restorative beverage with many claimed health benefits such as antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity activities. Despite its great curative potential, the poor bioavailability of EGCG restricts its clinical applcation. However, nanoformulations of EGCG are emerging as new alternatives to traditional formulations. This review focuses on the nanochemopreventive applications of various EGCG nanoparticles such as lipid-based, polymer-based, carbohydrate-based, protein-based, and metal-based nanoparticles. EGCG hybridized with these nanocarriers is capable of achieving advanced functions such as targeted release, active targeting, and enhanced penetration, ultimately increasing the bioavailability of EGCG. In addition, this review also summarizes the challenges for the use of EGCG in therapeutic applications, and suggests future directions for progress.

Abstract
Recent evidence has extensively demonstrated the anticancer potential of nutraceuticals, including plant polyphenols. Polymeric nanocarrier systems have played an important role in improving the physicochemical and pharmacological properties of polyphenols, thus ameliorating their therapeutic effectiveness. This article summarizes the benefits and shortcomings of various polymeric systems developed for the delivery of polyphenols in cancer therapy and reveals some ideas for future work.

Abstract
The ternary nanoparticles were fabricated by soy protein, pectin and tea polyphenol through photocatalysis. The particulate characteristics, including particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential were monitored for ternary nanoparticles formed under different photocatalysis time. Photocatalysis was favorable to form ternary nanoparticles with moderate particle size (310-370 nm), uniform distribution, spherical shape, and improved antioxidant activity. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of soy protein decreased with the increase in photocatalysis time in the ternary nanoparticles. Far-UV circular dichroism results indicated that increasing photocatalysis time could alter the secondary structure of soy protein with an increase in the proportion of β-sheet and β-turn structure at the cost of unordered coil and α-helix structure. According to FT-IR results, photocatalysis time could also modulate the conjugation between pectin and soy protein. In addition, photocatalysis could increase the binding affinities among the components, leading to better environmental stability of the ternary nanoparticles. The ternary nanoparticles in this study could be used as a good alternative to understand and consequently improve the physicochemical stability in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic matrices.

Abstract
Fish oil has been widely recognized as an excellent dietary source of polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA. However, it can undergo oxidation easily resulting in the formation of toxic off flavor compounds such as hydroperoxides. These compounds adversely affect the nutritional quality and may induce several stress reactions in body. To solve this problem, a new antioxidant bio-material, vanillic acid-grafted chitosan (Va-g-Ch), was synthesized and used as a wall material for microencapsulation of fish oil. The sardine oil loaded Va-g-Ch microparticles could be a potential functional food ingredient considering the numerous health benefits of fish oil, chitosan, and vanillic acid. The current study aimed to investigate the possible protective effect of sardine oil-loaded Va-g-Ch microparticles against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity and the underlying mechanisms. In vitro cytotoxicity evaluation was conducted using H9c2 cardiomyocytes. MTT assay revealed that effective cytoprotective effect was induced by a sample concentration of 12.5 μg/mL. Results of apoptosis by double fluorescent staining with acridine orange/ethidium bromide and caspase-3 evaluation by ELISA substantiated the above findings. Further, flow cytometric determination of membrane potential, relative expression of NF-κB by PCR, and ROS determination using DCFH-DA also confirmed the protective effect of encapsulated sardine oil against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. NF-κB expression was down-regulated nearly by 50% on cells treated with encapsulated sardine oil. Altogether, the results revealed that sardine oil-loaded Va-g-Ch microparticles demonstrated potential cell protection against doxorubicin-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has attracted significant research interest due to its health-promoting effects such as antioxidation, anti-inflammation and anti-cancer activities. However, its instability and poor bioavailability have largely limited its efficacy and application. Food-grade materials such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids show biodegradability, biocompatibility and biofunctionality properties. Food-grade encapsulation systems are usually used to improve the bioavailability of EGCG. In the present paper, we provide an overview of materials and techniques used in encapsulating EGCG, in which the adsorption mechanisms of food-grade systems during in vitro digestion are reviewed. Moreover, the potential challenges and future work using food-grade encapsulates for delivering EGCG are also discussed.

Abstract
An effective method to functionalize chitosan with 4-hexyloxyphenol (HP) under homogeneous reaction conditions was developed using laccase as the catalyst. The resulting copolymer was characterized for chemical structure, grafted-HP content, surface morphology, thermal stability, antioxidant capacity, hydrophobic properties and tensile strength. Solid-state 13C NMR spectrum confirmed the incorporation of HP onto chitosan. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed a decrease in the degree of crystallinity for laccase/HP treated chitosan compared to pure chitosan. The grafted-HP content in laccase/HP-treated chitosan first increased and then declined with increase of the initial HP/chitosan ratio. A heterogeneous surface with spherical particles on the laccase/HP treated chitosan was observed by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and scanning probe microscopy (SPM). The laccase/HP treatment of chitosan improved the thermal stability of copolymer. More significantly, the HP functionalized chitosan showed greatly improved ABTS+ and DPPH radicals scavenging capacity, compared with pure chitosan. The hydrophobicity property of the HP functionalized chitosan also significantly increased although its tensile strength decreased. This new type of composite with double functionalities (i.e., antioxidant and hydrophobic) could potentially be used as food packaging materials or coating agents.
