Abstract
Fluopimomide is a novel pesticide intensively used in agricultural pest control; however, its excessive use may have toxicological effects on non-target organisms. In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans was used to evaluate the toxic effects of fluopimomide and its possible mechanisms. The effects of fluopimomide on the growth, pharyngeal pumping, and antioxidant systems of C. elegans were determined. Furthermore, the gene expression levels associated with mitochondria in the nematodes were also investigated. Results indicated that fluopimomide at 0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 mg/L notably (p < 0.001) decreased body length, pharyngeal pumping, and body bends in the nematodes compared to the untreated control. Additionally, fluopimomide at 0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 mg/L notably (p < 0.05) increased the content of malondialdehyde by 3.30-, 21.24-, and 33.57-fold, respectively, while fluopimomide at 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L significantly (p < 0.001) increased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by 49.14% and 77.06% compared to the untreated control. In contrast, fluopimomide at 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L notably reduced the activities of target enzyme succinate dehydrogenase and at 5.0 mg/L reduced the activities of antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. Further evidence revealed that fluopimomide at 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L significantly inhibited oxygen consumption and at 0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 mg/L significantly inhibited ATP level in comparison to the untreated control. The expression of genes related to the mitochondrial electron transport chain mev-1 and isp-1 was significantly downregulated. ROS levels in the mev-1 and isp-1 mutants after fluopimomide treatments did not change significantly compared with the untreated mutants, suggesting that mev-1 and isp-1 may play critical roles in the toxicity induced by fluopimomide. Overall, the results demonstrate that oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage may be involved in toxicity of fluopimomide in C. elegans.

Abstract
The research on the development of dragon fruit and kiwi fruit through LAB-yeast compound fermentation is very limited, and there are few related fermentation products on the market. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of the antioxidant capacity of fermented beverages (FB) through in vitro simulated digestion, to evaluate the changes in metabolites of juice after fermentation through untargeted metabolomics, and used Caenorhabditis elegans as a model to evaluate its anti-aging activity. The results showed that FB not only has good in vitro antioxidant activity, but also the total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), ABTS scavenging ability, and hydroxyl radical scavenging ability of FB were significantly increased during gastric digestion and intestinal digestion. Metabolomics showed that the contents of phenols and flavonoids related to antioxidant increased after fermentation, and fermentation had a significant effect on organic acids and amino acids in FB. Finally, compared with the control group, although the original concentration of FB has a side-toxic effect on nematodes, the mean lifespan of C. elegans fed with 1.56% FB increased by 18.01%, SOD activity significantly increased by 96.16% and MDA content significantly decreased by 40.62%. FB has good antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo, and the antioxidant activity is stable during the simulated digestion process.

Abstract
Queen bee larva (QBL) is one kind of important edible insect that is harvested during royal jelly production process. QBL has many physiological functions; however, limited information is available regarding its antiaging effects. In this study, the antiaging function of freeze-dried QBL powder (QBLP) was investigated by combining the Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) model and transcriptomics. The administration of QBLP to C. elegans was shown to improve lifespan parameters. Additionally, QBLP improved the mobility of nematodes. Transcriptome analysis showed the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly enriched in Gene Ontology (GO) terms that were almost all related to the biological functions of cell metabolism and stress, which are associated with lifespan. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis suggested that the lifespan of C. elegans was related to the longevity regulating pathway-worm. The expression levels of the key genes sod-3, gst-6, hsp-12.6, lips-7, ins-8, and lips-17 were upregulated. sod-3, hsp-12.6, lips-7, and lips-17 are downstream targets of DAF-16, which is an important transcription factor related to lifespan extension. CF1038 (daf-16(mu86)) supplemented with QBLP did not show a life-prolonging. This indicates that the antiaging function of QBLP is closely related to daf-16. Thus, QBLP is a component that could potentially be used as a functional material to ameliorate aging and aging-related symptoms.

Abstract
22 edible oils can be discriminated based on tocopherol and phytosterol contents. In vitro antioxidant activity is correlated to polyphenol, tocopherol, and squalene. Oxidative and heat stress resistance is correlated to tocopherol and phytosterol. In vivo antioxidant activity is correlated to polyphenol, squalene, MUFA and PUFA.
In the last decade, with a growing emphasis on healthy diets, functional edible oils with high nutritional quality are becoming increasingly popular around the world. This study systematically compared the chemical composition and protective effect of 22 vegetable oils using multivariate chemometric tools. The results showed that the fatty acid composition and minor compounds were extremely variable among tested oils. Hierarchical cluster and principal component analysis discriminated these oils according to the tocopherol and phytosterol contents. The Pearson’s correlation analysis indicated that in vitro radical scavenging capacity was significantly correlated to polyphenol, tocopherol, and squalene. Additionally, the ameliorate effects on the heat and oxidative stress, ROS contents, and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured in Caenorhabditis elegans. The results showed that the antioxidant activity and stress resistance were positively correlated to polyphenol, tocopherol, phytosterol, MUFA, and PUFA, respectively. This study may offer an insight into oil discrimination and functional oil exploitation.

Abstract
Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is being widely explored as an in vivo model to study the effects of food bioactives. These nematodes are largely advantageous over other in vivo models as they are relatively inexpensive, have a short generation time, and have a completely sequenced genome, among other advantages. C. elegans is a commonly used model to study diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease; however, researchers are finding they can also give insight into the health promoting effect of food-derived bioactive compounds. As consumers become more aware of the health benefits of the foods that they consume, the study of bioactive properties of foods and food constituents is becoming an important source of information. This review focuses on the advantages of using C. elegans as a model such as their short lifespans, high level of gene conservation relative to humans, and large number of progenies per reproductive cycle. They are also easily manipulated in order to perform controlled experiments on synchronous populations. Through review of recent literature, it is clear that C. elegans can be used to study a range of food derived compounds such as bioactive peptides, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, and lipids. This review also provides information on potential challenges associated with working with this nematode. These challenges include the need for a sterile environment, potential inaccuracy when determining if the nematodes are dead, and the simplicity of the organism making it not suitable for all studies. Caenorhabditis elegans is an advantageous in vivo model over other organisms. Bioactivity of food compounds can be determined using Caenorhabditis elegans. Food bioactive compounds can decrease the risk of human disease.

Abstract
It is only recently that fermentation has been facing a dynamic revival in the food industry. Fermented fruit-based beverages are among the most ancient products consumed worldwide, while in recent years special research attention has been granted to assess their functionality. This review highlights the functional potential of alcoholic and non-alcoholic fermented fruit beverages in terms of chemical and nutritional profiles that impact on human health, considering the natural occurrence and enrichment of fermented fruit-based beverages in phenolic compounds, vitamins and minerals, and pro/prebiotics. The health benefits of fruit-based beverages that resulted from lactic, acetic, alcoholic, or symbiotic fermentation and specific daily recommended doses of each claimed bioactive compound were also highlighted. The latest trends on pre-fermentative methods used to optimize the extraction of bioactive compounds (maceration, decoction, and extraction assisted by supercritical fluids, microwave, ultrasound, pulsed electric fields, high pressure homogenization, or enzymes) are critically assessed. As such, optimized fermentation processes and post-fermentative operations, reviewed in an industrial scale-up, can prolong the shelf life and the quality of fermented fruit beverages.

Abstract
Cereal grains and oils contain various functional ingredients, such as amino acids, peptides, polyphenols, dietary fiber, linoleic acid, and natural pigments. Their biological activities are of great significance. Benefiting from its robust genetic function and simple cultivation, Caenorhabditis elegans, as one of the most important model organisms has been widely used to screen antiaging substances and investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms. In this paper, the recent advances in the use of C. elegans in antiaging research into active substances from cereals and oils will be assessed, and their potential signal transduction mechanisms will be systematically reviewed. This research aims to provide a theoretical reference for the use of active substances from cereals and oils to prevent and delay aging and aging-associated diseases.

Abstract
Our previous study has optimized the acid hydrolysis process of pumpkin polysaccharides (PPe) with scavenging ability based on central composite design. The aim of this study was to explore the in vivo-antioxidant ability of PPe and pumpkin polysaccharides acid-hydrolysis (PPe-S) using Caenorhabditis elegans. In composition analysis, the constituents of total sugar, protein, uronic acid, and sulfur groups in PPe-S were 87.03 ± 1.21%, 1.25 ± 0.78%, 37.61 ± 0.97%, and 0.14 ± 0.04%, respectively. Besides, results of antioxidant ability showed that PPe and PPe-S could reduce the oxidative stress (OS) induced by methyl viologen, extend lifespan of worms, and reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) level under oxidative conditions significantly (p < .05). Furthermore, PPe and PPe-S could enhance the stress-resistance related antioxidant enzymes including catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) significantly (p < .05). Moreover, the antioxidant effect of PPe-S was superior to PPe at the concentration of 4.0 mg/ml. In summary, this study demonstrated that the derived hydrolyzates from PPe had protective effects on the damage induced by the generation of intracellular free radical agents. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: OS plays an important role in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. It is widely acknowledged that diabetes and its complications pose a threat to human's health, and the number of people with diabetes will expand to 640 million in the 2040 year. Current studies have shown that all diabetes drugs have a kind of side effects. Fortunately, researchers have found and confirmed that plant-derived polysaccharide had a notable hypoglycemic effect via reducing the OS level in cell and tissue, and could decrease the diabetes symptoms as well. In this study, we proved that the polysaccharide derived from pumpkin could effectively ameliorate the OS level in C. elegans, including decreasing the damage of biofilm and ROS level. Therefore, our study shows that there is a high potential for pumpkin-derived polysaccharide and its hydrolyzates to be a bioactive component to prevent diabetes. In other words, this research can be applied to diabetes prevention and other diseases induced by OS.
