Selective and Controlled Release Responsive Nanoparticles with Adsorption-Pairing Synergy for Anthocyanin Extraction

Anthocyanins with different structures have different anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Precise structural use can improve the chemopreventive effects of anthocyanins and enhance treatment outcomes because the anthocyanin structure influences its functional sites and activities. However, owing to the available variety of anthocyanins and their complex structures, the low matching of intermolecular forces between existing adsorbents and anthocyanins limits the targeted separation of anthocyanin monomers. Short-range and efficient selective binding, which is difficult to achieve, is the current focus in the extraction field. We here developed self-assembled Fe3O4-based nano adsorbers with different surface modifications based on adsorption-pairing synergy. The electrostatic force, coordination bond, hydrogen bond, and π-π* bond together induced selective adsorption between Fe3O4 nanoparticles and anthocyanin molecules. An acid-release solution disrupted the polarity balance in the aforementioned association system, thereby promoting the controlled release of anthocyanins. Among the candidates, the effects of morphology, particle size, surface charge, and functional group on adsorption performance were analyzed. The polyacrylamide-modified magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were found to be favorable for selectively extracting anthocyanin, with an adsorption capacity of 19.74 ± 0.07 mg g-1. The release percentage of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside reached up to 98.6% ± 1.4%. This study offers a scientific basis for developing feasible nanotechniques to extract anthocyanins and plant active substances.

Improving Riparin-A Dissolution through a Laponite Based Nanohybrid

(1) Background: Riparin-A presents several pharmacological activities already elucidated, such as antimicrobial modulator, antileishmania, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antioxidant. Even with important bioactive effects, the applicability of Riparin-A is limited due to its low solubility in water, impairing its dissolution in biological fluids. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a nanohybrid based on Riparin-A and Laponite to obtain a better dissolution profile and evaluate its cytotoxic potential. (2) Methods: The formation of a hybrid system was highlighted by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Solubility, dissolution, and cytotoxicity studies were performed; (3) Results: An increase in the solubility and aqueous dissolution rate of Riparin-A was observed in the presence of clay. Diffractometric analysis of the hybrid system suggests the amorphization of Riparin-A, and thermal analyses indicated attenuation of decomposition and melting of the Riparin-A after interaction with clay. Furthermore, the nanosystem did not exhibit cytotoxic activity on normal and tumorigenic lines. (4) Conclusions: These results are promising for the development of the Riparin-A/Laponite nanosystem for therapeutic purposes, suggesting an increase in the range of possible routes of administration and bioavailability of this bioactive compound.

Novel zero waste tactics for commercial vegetables – recent advances

Commercial vegetables include tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and eggplant due to their surplus production, availability, and affordability. The valorisation of the massive wastage of commercial vegetables and providing a long-term solution has been challenging. The review addresses the implications of biowastes on the environment and fosters the recent investigations into valorising commercial vegetable waste to develop multiple value-added products. It discussed the outcomes of the multiple technologies, majorly on green chemistry extraction, while outlining other methods such as fermentation, enzymatic treatments, 3D printing foods, high-pressure homogenisation, microencapsulation, bio-absorption method, and pyrolysis for their respective vegetable wastes. Agri-residues can be a valuable source for formulating functional ingredients, natural additives, biodiesel, dyes, and animal feed. This comprehensive review proposes a strategy to upcycle low-cost biowaste to boost the economic and ecological benefits. The current review captures the interests and great collaborations between researchers, industrialists, policymakers, waste management bodies, and eco-activists.

A magnetic chitosan for efficient adsorption of vanadium (V) from aqueous solution

The all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is becoming a promising technology for large-scale energy storage due to its advantages such as scalability and flexibility. In recent years, the VRFB has been successfully developed and put into use in many countries. It is expected that the abandoned VRFB will generate a large amount of vanadium waste. To our knowledge, there are few reports on the disposal of spent VRFBs. Herein, chitosan-coated nano-zero-valent iron (CS-Fe⁰) is proposed for the first time as adsorbents for the treatment of spent VRFBs. It can provide a new approach to deal with the upcoming large number of spent VRFBs. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity for V(V) of chitosan and CS-Fe⁰ reached 209.5 and 511.3 mg/g at 288 K, respectively. CS-Fe⁰ showed better adsorption performance than chitosan under different pH conditions and is easy to be separated from the liquid phase. The Freundlich isotherm was suitable for the adsorption process of chitosan, and CS-Fe⁰ was more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm. Ionic strength (0.05-0.5 M) had a positive effect on the adsorption capacity of CS-Fe⁰, and the influence of coexisting anions on CS-Fe⁰ could be negligible. FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the primary mechanisms were the electrostatic attraction of chitosan and redox of Fe⁰. The present study confirmed that CS-Fe⁰ could be a potential material to efficiently trap V(V) from the VRFB electrolyte.

Intelligent labels manufactured by thermo-compression using starch and natural biohybrid based

This work aims to develop intelligent labels based on cassava starch and biohybrid pigments by thermo-compression. The biohybrid pigment (BH) was developed by the adsorption of anthocyanins (ACNs) extracted from the jambolan fruit (Syzygium cumini L.) into montmorillonite (Mt) in order to improve its stability. The effect of the addition of biohybrid on the physicochemical properties of the thermo-pressed starch labels was evaluated. ACNs from jambolan extract show a visible pH-dependent color-changing ability at pH 1 - 12, and the adsorption did not modify the color property. The intelligent labels presented a homogeneous surface, and the BH was well dispersed in the starch matrix. The presence of BH increased the solubility in the water of starch labels. Chemical structure characterization revealed that the BH interacted with starch matrices through hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, the thermal stability of starch labels increased with the presence of BH. Hence, the purple color of intelligent labels was preserved at high temperatures. Finally, labels containing BH show visible changes from purple to a blue color when exposed to ammonia vapor, which simulates the degradation of meat products. Thus, the label content jambolan pigments will be used to control meat deterioration.

Anthocyanin Hybrid Nanopigments from Pomegranate Waste: Colour, Thermomechanical Stability and Environmental Impact of Polyester-Based Bionanocomposites

In the present work, anthocyanin (ACN) hybrid nanopigments were synthetized by using a natural pomegranate dye (PD) and calcined hydrotalcite (HT) and montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclays. A wide colour gamut was obtained with MMT-based nanopigments ranging from reddish to bluish hues caused by structural transformations of ACNs at different pH values. However, a buffer effect was observed with HT obtaining samples a similar final colour regardless of the synthesis conditions. Nanopigments added with a biomordant extracted from pomegranate peels showed a different colour compared to the incorporation of a commercial mordant due to the intrinsic colouring properties of the pomegranate bioadditive. The developed nanopigments were incorporated at 7 wt% loading to produce novel polyester-based bionanocomposites which were characterized in terms of thermal, mechanical and colour properties. The encapsulation of PD into the nanoclays improved its thermal stability, in particular for MMT-based nanopigments. The pH changes observed during the nanofillers synthesis affected the final colour of the MMT-based nanocomposites, inducing a general increase in ∆E* and a decrease in gloss values. Slight improvements were obtained in terms of elastic modulus for MMT-based polymer samples confirming the applicability of the developed bionanocomposites as colouring and reinforcement materials. A very similar environmental profile was obtained for MMT and HT-based nanofillers showing MMT-based nanopigments a slightly better general behaviour. The results of the LCA study evidenced the suitability of the processes used in this work to the circular bioeconomy approach through sustainable food waste management and the production of bioplastics using waste substrates.

Adsorption-desorption of anthocyanins from jambolan (Syzygium cumini) fruit in laponite® platelets: Kinetic models, physicochemical characterization, and functional properties of biohybrids

This study aims to develop and characterize biohybrids (BH) based on anthocyanins (ACNs) from jambolan (Syzygium cumini) and laponite® (Lap). ACNs from jambolan fruit were extracted using an acidified water solution at pH 1. ACNs were recovered from extract using Lap as adsorbent between 5 °C and 40 °C. There was no significant effect (p > 0.05) of the temperature on the adsorption process of ACNs. Thus, the process was classified as physical adsorption in heterogeneous sites where ACNs were stabilized by means of van der Waals force, π - π force, and hydrogen bonding on the Lap surface. After adsorption, the BH powder appeared to have an amorphous structure and red color. However, the color changed at pH ≥ 7. In addition, the obtained BH showed antioxidant properties and high stability when exposed to visible light irradiation. This research reports new information about the valorization and application of ACNs from jambolan for food industrial applications.

Removal and Extraction of Carboxylic Acids and Non-ionic Compounds with Simple Hydroxides and Layered Double Hydroxides

Carboxylic acids are an important natural component as a final product or intermediates for syntheses. They are produced in plants, animals and also as products from biotechnological processes. This review presents the use of single hydroxide particles and layered double hydroxides as alternative adsorbents to remove carboxylic acids from liquid media. The proposal to use hydroxide particles is based on its affinity to adsorb or intercalate carboxylic acids. Besides, the change in properties of the adsorbate-sorbate product evinces that this intermediate can be used as a vehicle to transport and release carboxylic acids. Additional examples will also be presented to prove that layered hydroxides are capable of removing non-ionic compounds from wine, milk and tomato. The use of layered compounds to remove active ingredients could reduce the number of separations steps, costs and reduce or eliminate solvents, thus encouraging the design of industrial processes of separation using hydroxides particles.

Hybrid Pigments from Anthocyanin Analogues and Synthetic Clay Minerals

Flavylium cations are synthetic analogues of anthocyanins, the natural plant pigments that are responsible for the majority of the red, blue, and purple colors of flowers, fruits, and leaves. Unlike anthocyanins, the properties and reactivity of flavylium cations can be manipulated by the nature and position of substituents on the flavylium cation chromophore. Currently, the most promising strategies for stabilizing the color of anthocyanins and flavylium cations appear to be to intercalate and/or adsorb them on solid surfaces and/or in confined spaces. We report here that hybrid pigments with improved thermal stability, fluorescence, and attractive colors are produced by the cation-exchange-mediated adsorption of flavylium cations (FL) on two synthetic clays, the mica-montmorillonite SYn-1, and the laponite SYnL-1. Compared to the FL/SYn-1 hybrid pigments, the FL/SYnL-1 pigments exhibited improved thermal stability as judged by color retention, better preferential adsorption of the cationic form of FL1 at neutral to mildly basic pH (pH 7-8), and lower susceptibility to color changes at pH 10. Although both clays adsorb the cationic form on their external surfaces, SYnL-1 gave more evidence of adsorption in the interlayer regions of the clay. This interlayer adsorption appears to be the contributing factor to the better properties of the FL/SYnL-1 hybrid pigments, pointing to this clay to be a promising inorganic matrix for the development of brightly colored, thermally more stable hybrid pigments based on cationic analogues of natural plant pigments.
