Temperature and irradiance influences on cadmium and zinc uptake and toxicity in a freshwater cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa

Effects of zinc toxicity on the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sphaerica-ultastructural, physiological and biochemical analyses

The current study describes the mechanisms of zinc toxicity in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sphaerica after eight days treatment with 10 mg L-1 ZnCl2. The application of zinc not only showed elevated accumulation of the metal inside the cells but also exhibited devastating impacts on the cell numbers, morphology, and ultrastructure of A. sphaerica. The effects of zinc on the pigments contents, oxygen evolution rate, Fv/Fm, electron transport rate, and carbohydrate content were also evaluated in A. sphaerica. Moreover, zinc adversely affected nutrient uptake and the cellular energy budget in the test cyanobacterium which in turn hampered heterocyst development and nitrogen fixation. Alongside, the cyanobacterium experienced zinc-mediated non-competitive inhibition of glutamine synthetase activity, curtailed synthesis of amino acids and proteins. Furthermore, drastically reduced total lipid and increased unsaturated lipid contents were also the prominent characteristics of zinc stressed A. sphaerica. Most importantly, zinc stress caused severe damages to the protein, lipid, and DNA by triggering hydrogen peroxide generation and accumulation of oxidized glutathione. Therefore, excess zinc is highly toxic to the cyanobacterium A. sphaerica, and the mechanisms of its toxicity followed a cascade of events including oxidative stress mediated geopardisation of growth and ultrastructure, metabolic derangements, and macromolecular damages.

Growth and photosynthetic responses of Ochromonas gloeopara to cadmium stress and its capacity to remove cadmium

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the predominant anthropogenic pollutants in aquatic systems. As Cd has negative effects on species at all trophic levels, the community composition in aquatic habitats can be changed as a result of Cd stress. The response of mixotrophic protists to environmental stressors is particularly important as they act as both producers and consumers in complex planktonic communities. In this study, we used mixotrophic Ochromonas gloeopara to study its growth and photosynthetic responses to Cd, and specially focused on the effects of initial Cd concentrations and nutrient levels on its capacity to remove Cd. Results showed that when Cd concentration reached 0.5 mg L-1, the growth rate and carrying capacity were significantly inhibited, whereas the photosynthesis was markedly decreased when Cd concentration reached 0.15 mg L-1. Moreover, under Cd concentration 0.15, 0.5, 0.9, 1.6, and 2.0 mg L-1, the removal efficiencies of Cd by O. gloeopara were 83.2%, 77.7%, 74.6%, 70.1%, and 68.8%, respectively. The increase of nitrogen did not cause significant effect on the removal capacity of Cd by O. gloeopara, but increased concentration of phosphorus significantly enhanced the removal capacity of Cd. Our findings indicated that the mixotrophic O. gloeopara has strong tolerance and capacity to remove Cd, and increasing concentration of phosphorus can increase its removal capacity, suggesting that O. gloeopara has great potential application value in mitigating Cd pollution in waters.

Mitigation of zinc toxicity through differential strategies in two species of the cyanobacterium Anabaena isolated from zinc polluted paddy field

The present study describes the physiological and biochemical mechanisms of zinc tolerance in two heterocytous cyanobacteria i.e. Anabaena doliolum and Anabaena oryzae, treated with their respective LC₅₀ concentrations of zinc (3 and 4.5 mg L^-1) for eight days. The feedbacks were examined in terms of growth, metabolism, zinc exclusion, zinc accumulation, oxidative stress, antioxidants and metallothionein contents. Although the growth and metabolic activities were reduced in both the cyanobacterium, maximum adversity was noticed in A. doliolum. The higher order of abnormalities in A. doliolum was attributed to excessive accumulation of zinc and enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. However, the comparatively higher growth and metabolic activities of A. oryzae were ascribed to the lower accumulation of zinc as a result of released polysaccharides mediated zinc exclusion, synthesis of zinc chelating metallothioneins and subsequent less production of ROS. The oxidative stress and macromolecular damages were prominent in both the cyanobacterium but the condition was much harsher in A. doliolum which may be explained by its comparatively low antioxidative enzyme activities (SOD, APX and GR) and smaller amount of ascorbate-glutathione-tocopherol contents than that of A. oryzae. However, sustenance of 50% growth by A. doliolum under zinc stress despite severe cellular damages was attributed to the enhanced synthesis of phenolics, flavonoids, and proline. Thus, differential zinc tolerance in A. doliolum and A. oryzae is possibly the outcome of their distinct mitigation strategies. Although the two test organisms followed pseudo second order kinetics model during zinc biosorption yet they exhibited differential zinc biosorption capacity. The cyanobacterium A. oryzae was found to be more efficient in removing zinc as compared to A. doliolum and this efficiency makes A. oryzae a promising candidate for the phycoremediation of zinc polluted environments.

Thermal discharge influences the bioaccumulation and bioavailability of metals in oysters: Implications of ocean warming

Human-induced temperature changes influence coastal regions, both via thermal pollution and ocean warming, which exerts profound effects on the chemistry of metals and the physiology of organisms. However, it remains unknown whether the increased temperature of discharged water or ocean warming, as a result of climate change, lead to an increase of human health risks associated with the consumption of sea foods. In this study, the influence of temperature on metal accumulation by oysters was studied in individuals collected from a coastal area affected by the thermal water discharge of the Houshi Power Plant, China. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and oral bioavailability (OBA) of metals in oysters was determined. Elevated temperatures led to an increase in BAF for Cu, Zn, Hg, and Cd (p < 0.05), but no change was observed for As and Pb (p > 0.05). The OBA for Cd, As, and Pb correlated positively to elevated temperatures (p < 0.05). However, for Cu and Zn, OBA was negatively correlated with increasing temperature (p < 0.05). As, Pb, and Cd in the trophically available metal (defined as a sum of heat-stable proteins, heat-denaturable proteins, and organelles) was significantly elevated at the highest temperature seawater site (site A) compared to the lowest seawater site (site B). Thus, the irregular variation of OBA for each metal may be the result of variations in the subcellular distribution of metals and the protein quality influenced by the increased temperature. Moreover, the increased temperature and increased the hazard quotient values of As and Cd (p < 0.05 for As, n = 6, p < 0.05 for Cd, n = 6), which provided an indication of the potential risks of the consumption of oysters or other seafood to future warming under climate change scenarios.

Temperature-dependent competitive advantages of an allelopathic alga over non-allelopathic alga are altered by pollutants and initial algal abundance levels

In the context of climate warming, the dominance of allelopathic algae that cause ecosystem disturbances is an important topic. Although the hypothesis that an increase in temperature will be favorable to the dominance of allelopathic algae has been increasingly supported by many studies, it is still unclear how other factors can affect the influence of temperature. In this study, the effects of copper exposure and initial algal abundance on the competition between Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (non-allelopathic alga) and Chlorella vulgaris (allelopathic alga) were investigated during temperature changes. The results showed that increased temperatures enhanced the competitive advantage of C. vulgaris only in the absence of copper exposure. Our data confirmed that copper exposure along with increased temperature (20-30 °C) may change the competitive advantage of C. vulgaris from favorable to unfavorable. The initial algal abundance was found to affect competition outcome by controlling copper toxicity. This study suggests that pollutants and initial abundance can alter the effects of increased temperature on the allelopathic interaction. Given the temporal dynamics of algal abundance and the pollutants in natural ecosystems, these findings should be considered in the prediction of temperature influence on an algal community.

Assessing interactions between environmental factors and aquatic toxicity: Influences of dissolved CO2 and light on Cd toxicity in the aquatic macrophyte Potamogeton crispus

The objective of this study was to investigate the combined effects of varying dissolved CO₂ concentration (ambient CO₂, 3˜17 μmol L^-1, elevated CO₂, 48˜81 μmol L^-1) and light intensity (high light, c. 150 μmol photon m^-2 s^-1, low light, c. 25 μmol photon m^-2 s^-1) on the bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) in a macrophyte Potamogeton crispus, under constant Cd exposure. The data confirmed that 100 μM Cd led to adverse changes in morphology, ultrastructure and biochemistry in P. crispus. The toxic effects depended strongly on CO₂ concentration and light intensity: elevated CO₂ and high light both increased Cd concentrations in P. crispus, and there was a significant interaction between the two factors. Compared to high light grown plants, the photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll content of low light grown P. crispus were much less affected and the MDA content was lower, when exposed to 100 μM Cd. In addition, an antioxidative response was observed with a significant increase in SOD, POD and GST activities, indicating that low light grown P. crispus are more protected against Cd toxicity. When compared with ambient CO₂ concentrations, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic rate and starch content, as well as the activity of SOD and GST, were significantly enhanced in Cd treated P. crispus under elevated CO₂. This suggests that elevated CO₂ reduced Cd toxicity in P. crispus by increasing photosynthesis and enhancing the antioxidant system. Moreover, the statistical results showed that dissolved CO₂ and light had additive effects on Cd toxicity in P. crispus, reflected by the physiological parameters of total chlorophyll content, SOD activity and MDA content, indicating that the combination of high CO₂ and low light produced more protection against Cd toxicity than did the factors alone. Based on the results of this study, it appears clear that referring to a specific site in aquatic ecosystem, dissolved CO₂ concentration and light availability should be considered when assessing and managing Cd impacts on aquatic plants.

Influence of light intensity on cadmium uptake and toxicity in the cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

The mechanisms of cadmium toxicity to cyanobacterial photosynthesis have been extensively studied, but the response mechanisms to combinations of different cadmium concentrations and different light intensities are not yet well understood. The two principal objectives of the present work were to: 1) study the short term (5 h) toxic effects of cadmium on Synechocystis PCC6803 under three different culturing light intensity conditions; and, 2) investigate the effects of light history on Cd toxicity to Synechocystis. The maximal (Ф_M) and operational (Ф'_M) photosystem II quantum yields, photosystem I quantum yield [Y (I)], cyclic electron flow, relative photochemical quenching (qPrel), relative non-photochemical quenching (qNrel), relative unquenched fluorescence (UQFrel), pigment contents, and cadmium uptake were evaluated when Synechocystis cells were treated with cadmium for 5 h under three different light conditions. We demonstrated that cadmium toxicity was enhanced with increasing growth light intensities due to increased cadmium uptake under higher light exposures, and the photoprotective mechanisms could not cope with cadmium and light stress under high light conditions. We also investigated Cd toxicity to Synechocystis adapted to three growth light intensities and subsequently shifted to different light intensity conditions to compare the effects of light regime shift on cadmium toxicity. We observed increased cadmium toxicity when the cells were transferred from low light to high light conditions. Interestingly, Synechocystis cells grown at high light intensities were more tolerant to cadmium than cells grown at low light intensities after the same light regime shift, due to the development of photoprotective mechanisms.

Species-species interactions modulate copper toxicity under different visible light conditions

Combination of biotic and abiotic factors influences the effects of naturally occurring or anthropogenic chemicals on photosynthetic microorganisms in the aquatic environment. Nonetheless, the combined effects of physical stressors and species-species interaction on chemicals' toxicity are still poorly understood. The present study examines the responses of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. alone and in mixtures to copper exposure under increasing visible light intensities. Cell growth, chlorophyll bleaching, oxidative stress and membrane permeability were determined by flow cytometry in both mono- and multi-species tests. The results revealed that species-species interactions influenced copper toxicity under different light regimes at 4 h and 48 h - exposure. For a given light condition, monocultures of Synechocystis sp. were more sensitive to copper than those of C. reinhardtii. In long-term incubation C. reinhardtii sensitivity to copper diminished in presence of Synechocystis sp. under low-intensity light, however it was enhanced under high-intensity light. The present results revealed the complex interplay between visible light intensity variations, species-species interaction and copper effects to phytoplankton in long- term exposure.

Effects and control of metal nutrients and species on Microcystis aeruginosa growth and bloom

The effects and control of typical metal nutrients, copper, iron, and zinc, on the growth and bloom of Microcystis aeruginosa were investigated with a series of flask-shaking tests. The optimal concentrations of copper, iron, and zinc for algal growth were 0.001, 3-12, and 0.05 mg/L, respectively. The order of toxicity to the alga was Cu > Zn > Fe. The effects of the species, for a trace metal at the same concentrations, on the growth of M. aeruginosa were relatively remarkable. Ionic and complexation species induced more algal growth than the carbonate and sulfide-bound species. Changes in copper concentration and iron species were adopted to adjust and control the bloom of M. aeruginosa. Increases in copper concentrations significantly suppressed the M. aeruginosa bloom. The growth rate of M. aeruginosa slowed significantly when ionic iron was replaced with sulfide-bound iron, and the control of bloom was remarkable. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Using trace metal nutrient species and concentration to regulate and control algal growth and bloom may pave another way for the management of cyanobacterial bloom.

Combined Effects of Trace Metals and Light on Photosynthetic Microorganisms in Aquatic Environment

In the present review, we critically examine the state-of-the-art of the research on combined effects of trace metals and light on photosynthetic microorganisms in aquatic environment. Light of different intensity and spectral composition affects the interactions between trace metals and photosynthetic microorganisms directly, by affecting vital cellular functions and metal toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics, and indirectly, by changing ambient medium characteristics. Light radiation and in particular, the ultraviolet radiation component (UVR) alters the structure and reactivity of dissolved organic matter in natural water, which in most of the cases decreases its metal binding capacity and enhances metal bioavailability. The increase of cellular metal concentrations is generally associated with increasing light intensity, however further studies are necessary to better understand the underlying mechanisms. Studies on the combined exposures of photosynthetic microorganisms to metals and UVR reveal antagonistic, additive or synergistic interactions depending on light intensity, spectral composition or light pre-exposure history. Among the light spectrum components, most of the research was performed with UVR, while the knowledge on the role of high-intensity visible light and environmentally relevant solar light radiation is still limited. The extent of combined effects also depends on the exposure sequence and duration, as well as the species-specific sensitivity of the tested microorganisms and the activation of stress defense responses.

Temperature modulates phototrophic periphyton response to chronic copper exposure

Streams located in vineyard areas are highly prone to metal pollution. In a context of global change, aquatic systems are generally subjected to multi-stress conditions due to multiple chemical and/or physical pressures. Among various environmental factors that modulate the ecological effects of toxicants, special attention should be paid to climate change, which is driving an increase in extreme climate events such as sharp temperature rises. In lotic ecosystems, periphyton ensures key ecological functions such as primary production and nutrient cycling. However, although the effects of metals on microbial communities are relatively well known, there is scant data on possible interactions between temperature increase and metal pollution. Here we led a study to evaluate the influence of temperature on the response of phototrophic periphyton to copper (Cu) exposure. Winter communities, collected in a 8 °C river water, were subjected for six weeks to four thermal conditions in microcosms in presence or not of Cu (nominal concentration of 15 μg L(-1)). At the initial river temperature (8 °C), our results confirmed the chronic impact of Cu on periphyton, both in terms of structure (biomass, distribution of algal groups, diatomic composition) and function (photosynthetic efficiency). At higher temperatures (13, 18 and 23 °C), Cu effects were modulated. Indeed, temperature increase reduced Cu effects on algal biomass, algal class proportions, diatom assemblage composition and photosynthetic efficiency. This reduction of Cu effects on periphyton may be related to lower bioaccumulation of Cu and/or to selection of more Cu-tolerant species at higher temperatures.

Different physiological and photosynthetic responses of three cyanobacterial strains to light and zinc

Zinc pollution of freshwater aquatic ecosystems is a problem in many countries, although its specific effects on phytoplankton may be influenced by other environmental factors. Light intensity varies continuously under natural conditions depending on the cloud cover and the season, and the response mechanisms of cyanobacteria to high zinc stress under different light conditions are not yet well understood. We investigated the effects of high zinc concentrations on three cyanobacterial strains (Microcystis aeruginosa CPCC299, M. aeruginosa CPCC632, and Synechocystis sp. FACHB898) grown under two light regimes. Under high light condition (HL), the three cyanobacterial strains increased their Car/Chl a ratios and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), with CPCC299 showing the highest growth rate-suggesting a greater ability to adapt to those conditions as compared to the other two strains. Under high zinc concentrations the values of maximal (ФM) and operational (Ф'M) photosystem II quantum yields, photosystem I quantum yield [Y(I)], and NPQ decreased. The following order of sensitivity to high zinc was established for the three strains studied: CPCC299>CPCC632>FACHB898. These different sensitivities can be partly explained by the higher internal zinc content observed in CPCC299 as compared to the other two strains. HL increased cellular zinc content and therefore increased zinc toxicity in both M. aeruginosa strains, although to a greater extent in CPCC299 than in CPCC632. Car/Chl a ratios decreased with high zinc concentrations under HL only in CPCC299, but not under low light (LL) conditions for all the studied strains, suggesting that the three strains have different response mechanisms to high zinc stress when grown under different light regimes. We demonstrated that interactions between light intensity and zinc need to be considered when studying the bloom dynamics of cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems.

Biosorption of toxic metals using freely suspended Microcystis aeruginosa biomass

This paper describes the potential application of a freely suspended cyanobacterial biomass of Microcystis aeruginosa as a sorption material for toxic metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) from aqueous solutions. In order to identify the most suitable conditions for removal of these elements (concentration range: 1–20 mg L−1), the laboratory experiments were carried out during different incubation times (1–48 h) and under various temperatures (10–40°C), pH (5–9) and with or without light irradiance. Competitive biosorption of Cd and Pb was also investigated. We found that M. aeruginosa demonstrates high efficiency in removing both of the studied metals from aqueous solutions. Sorption of Pb occurred, however, more rapidly and effectively, and was less disturbed by changes in physico-chemical conditions. Under pH=7, 25°C and light, the removal rates after 3 h and 6 h of incubation, were 90–100% for Pb and 79.5–100% for Cd, respectively. The co-occurrence of the metals decreased the rate of metal biosorption. Pb was sequestered preferentially over Cd. From the results we conclude that freely suspended M. aeruginosa can constitute a promising low-cost, easy-producible biosorbent material for toxic metals in contaminated wastewater.

Antagonistic and synergistic effects of light irradiation on the effects of copper on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

The present study showed the important role of light intensity and spectral composition on Cu uptake and effects on green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. High-intenisty light (HL) increased cellular Cu concentrations, but mitigated the Cu-induced decrease in chlorophyll fluorescence, oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation at high Cu concentrations, indicating that Cu and HL interact in an antagonistic manner. HL up-regulated the transcription of genes involved in the antioxidant response in C. reinhardtii and thus reduced the oxidative stress upon exposure to Cu and HL. Combined exposure to Cu and UVBR resulted in an increase of cellular Cu contents and caused severe oxidative damage to the cells. The observed effects were higher than the sum of the effects corresponding to exposure to UVBR or Cu alone suggesting a synergistic interaction.

Effects of d-menthol stress on the growth of and microcystin release by the freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905

The effects of d-menthol on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905 and microcystin (MCY) concentration were evaluated by batch culture experiments. The algal biomass and the intracellular and extracellular MCY concentrations were evaluated during 5d incubation. After the d-menthol exposure, the dry weight of the cells gradually decreased; the decrease in the dry weight after 5d exposure was 29, 12, and 2mgL(-1) when the initial cell densities were 1.4×10(7), 1.2×10(6), and 2.9×10(5)cellmL(-1), respectively. The results indicate that the d-menthol exposure inhibited the cellular growth, thus also inhibiting the increase of the total MCY concentration. In the presence of d-menthol, the intracellular MCY was gradually released into the medium after the cell lysis. The extracellular MCY concentration in the medium was significantly higher in the d-menthol-exposed samples than in the control samples, confirming that d-menthol cannot decompose the extracellular MCY.

Effects of limonene stress on the growth of and microcystin release by the freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905

The effects of limonene exposure on the growth of Microcystisaeruginosa and the release of toxic intracellular microcystin (MCY) were tested by evaluating the results obtained from the batch culture experiments with M. aeruginosa FACHB-905. The time series of cell as well as intracellular and extracellular MCY concentrations were evaluated during 5d of the incubation. After exposure to limonene, the number of cells gradually diminished; the net log cell reduction after 5d of the exposure was 3.0, 3.6, and 3.8log when the initial cell densities were set at 1.6×10(7), 1.1×10(6) and 4.1×10(5)cell/mL, respectively. Limonene was found to significantly influence the production and release of MCY. As the limonene exposure could inhibit the increase in the number of cells, the increase in the total MCY concentration in the medium was also inhibited. In the presence of limonene, the intracellular MCY was gradually released into the medium through a gradual reduction in the number of cells. The extracellular MCY concentration in the medium was significantly higher in the limonene-exposed samples than in the control samples, which confirmed that limonene cannot decompose the extracellular MCY.

Subcellular accumulation of different concentrations of cadmium, nickel, and copper in Indian mustard and application of a sigmoidal model

Certain plant species can tolerate and even detoxify metallic elements. This detoxification ability has been shown to depend on how plants distribute the metallic elements in their tissues. In turn, this distribution may have an important impact on phytoremediation. Here, we investigated the effects of different single-metal concentrations (10, 50, 100, and 300 μmol L) of cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu) on their subcellular distribution in L. var. (Indian mustard). At the applied concentration of 300 μmol L, 98% of the Cu and 79% of Cd were retained in the roots, while Ni was distributed between leaves (32%), stems (29%), and roots (39%). The cell wall and soluble fractions were the dominant storage compartments for Cd and Cu in the stems and leaves, whereas the soluble fraction was the dominant storage compartment for Ni in stems and leaves. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) X-ray micrographs showed a breakdown of epidermal, palisade, and spongy parenchyma cells following the 300 μmol L Cd, Ni, and Cu treatment. A sigmoidal model is a powerful tool to describe the subcellular accumulation and tissue concentrations of Cd, Ni, and Cu following exposure to various concentrations of metals. The coefficients of determination () values for the description of the accumulation were high, although the membrane subcellular fraction did not fit the equation. Both the maximum accumulation capacity and the critical concentrations of metals were well described by the model. The results indicate that the use of a sigmoidal model is a promising method that could improve the understanding of metal accumulation at the subcellular level in Indian mustard.

Functional characterization and determination of the physiological role of a calcium-dependent potassium channel from cyanobacteria

Despite the important achievement of the high-resolution structures of several prokaryotic channels, current understanding of their physiological roles in bacteria themselves is still far from complete. We have identified a putative two transmembrane domain-containing channel, SynCaK, in the genome of the freshwater cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a model photosynthetic organism. SynCaK displays significant sequence homology to MthK, a calcium-dependent potassium channel isolated from Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum. Expression of SynCaK in fusion with enhanced GFP in mammalian Chinese hamster ovary cells' plasma membrane gave rise to a calcium-activated, potassium-selective activity in patch clamp experiments. In cyanobacteria, Western blotting of isolated membrane fractions located SynCaK mainly to the plasma membrane. To understand its physiological function, a SynCaK-deficient mutant of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, ΔSynCaK, has been obtained. Although the potassium content in the mutant organisms was comparable to that observed in the wild type, ΔSynCaK was characterized by a depolarized resting membrane potential, as determined by a potential-sensitive fluorescent probe. Growth of the mutant under various conditions revealed that lack of SynCaK does not impair growth under osmotic or salt stress and that SynCaK is not involved in the regulation of photosynthesis. Instead, its lack conferred an increased resistance to the heavy metal zinc, an environmental pollutant. A similar result was obtained using barium, a general potassium channel inhibitor that also caused depolarization. Our findings thus indicate that SynCaK is a functional channel and identify the physiological consequences of its deletion in cyanobacteria.

How does growth temperature affect cadmium toxicity measured on different life history traits in the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans?

Environmental factors, in particular temperature, have been shown to affect the toxicity of chemicals. In the present study the authors exposed the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to five concentrations of Cd (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mg Cd/L agar) at four constant temperatures (11, 15, 18, and 21°C) and monitored survival and reproduction on a daily basis. Data were incorporated in a population matrix model to determine the population growth rate (PGR). An additional experiment at 15 and 20°C and 0, 1, 5, and 10 mg Cd/L was performed to include growth measurements in order to relate changes in reproduction to resource allocations between investments in growth and reproduction. The impacts of Cd on PGR increased with increasing temperature, shifting the median effective concentration (EC50) for PGR from 11.6 ± 5.4 and 9.2 ± 1.3 at 11°C and 15°C, to 2.1 ± 0.1 and 1.7 ± 0.4 at 18°C and 21°C. Cadmium and temperature decreased growth rates, but Cd also increased maturation times and decreased final body size. It is hypothesized that Cd toxicity leads to a decrease in nutrient assimilation and that this "chemical anorexia" is more severe at high temperatures, where energy demands for growth and reproduction are the highest.
