Evaluation of biochars in reducing the bioavailability of flubendiamide in water/sediment using passive sampling with polyoxymethylene

Combined effects of pH and dissolved organic matter on the availability of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aqueous environment

The interaction between pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) with dissolved organic matter (DOM) can alter their bioavailability and toxicity. Nevertheless, little is known about how pH and DOM work together to affect the availability of PPCPs. This study investigated the impact of pH and DOM on the availability of seven PPCPs, namely Carbamazepine, Estrone, Bisphenol A, Testosterone Propionate, Triclocarban, 4-tert-Octylphenol and 4-n-Nonylphenol, using negligible depletion solid-phase microextraction (nd-SPME). The uptake kinetics of PPCPs by the nd-SPME fibers increased proportionally with DOM concentrations, likely due to enhanced diffusive conductivity in the unstirred water layer. At neutral pH, the partitioning coefficients of PPCPs for Humic Acid (log KDOC 3.87-5.25) were marginally higher than those for Fulvic Acid (log KDOC 3.64-5.11). Also, the log KDOC values correlated linearly with the log DOW (pH 7.0) values of PPCPs, indicating a predominant role for hydrophobic interactions in the binding of DOM and PPCPs. Additionally, specific interactions like hydrogen bonding, π-π, and electrostatic interactions occur for certain compounds, influenced by the polarity and spatial conformation of the compounds. For these ionizable PPCPs, the log DDOC values exhibit a strong dependence on pH due to the dual influence of pH on both DOM and PPCPs. The log DDOC values rose from pH 1.0 to 3.0, peaked at pH 5.0 to 9.0, and then (sharply) declined from 11.0 to 13.0. The reasons are that in strong acidic circumstances, the coiled and compressed shape of DOM inhibits the hydrophobic interaction, whereas in strong alkaline conditions, significant electrostatic repulsion reduces the sorption. This study reveals that the effects of DOM on the bioavailability of PPCPs are dependent on both pH and the specific compound involved.

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers integrated ionic liquids for targeted detecting diamide insecticides in environmental water by HPLC-UV following MSPE

Efficiently detecting diamide insecticides in environmental water is challenging due to their low concentrations and complex matrix interferences. In this study, we developed ionic liquids (ILs)-incorporated magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (IL-MMIPs) for the detection of diamide insecticides, capitalizing on the advantages of ILs and quick magnetic separation through surface imprinting. Tetrachlorantraniliprole was used as the template, and a specific IL, 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([VEIm][PF6]), was employed as the functional monomer. Various synthesis conditions were investigated to optimize adsorption efficiency. The prepared IL-MMIPs were successfully employed as adsorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) to selectively extract, separate, and quantify three types of diamide insecticides from water samples using HPLC-UV detection. Under optimal conditions, the analytical method achieved low limits of detection (0.69 ng mL-1, 0.64 ng mL-1, 0.59 ng mL-1 for cyantraniliprole, chlorantraniliprole and tetrachlorantraniliprole, respectively). The method also displayed a wide linear range (0.003-10 μg mL-1 for cyantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole, and 0.004-10 μg mL-1 for tetrachlorantraniliprole, respectively) with satisfactory coefficients (R2≥0.9996), and low relative standard deviation (RSD≤2.55%). Additionally, extraction recoveries fell within the range of 79.4%-109%. The results clearly demonstrate that IL-MMIPs exhibit exceptional recognition and rebinding capabilities. The developed IL-MMIPs-MSPE-HPLC-UV method is straightforward and rapid, making it suitable for the detection and analysis of three kinds of diamide insecticides in environmental water.

Synthesis of in-situ magnetized MOF-cellulose membranes for high-efficiency enrichment of diamide insecticides in vegetables and determination by LC-MS/MS

This study presents a novel, eco-friendly composite adsorbent material designed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of diamide insecticides from vegetable samples. The membrane, denoted as Fe-MMm, was incorporated with a cellulose framework embedded with Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) magnetized with Fe3O4. This innovative material streamlined the conventional solid-phase extraction process, simplifying the sample pre-treatment. By combining it with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), the method achieves significantly enhanced extraction efficiency through systematic optimization of experimental parameters, including adsorbent selection, pH, ionic strength, adsorption time, and elution time. The method had a wide linear range of 0.1-1000 ng/mL and an exceptionally low detection limit ranging from 0.023 to 0.035 ng/mL. The successful identification of diamide insecticides in vegetable samples underscores the potential of Fe-MMm as a robust material for sample pretreatment in analytical applications.

Bioavailability assessment of difenoconazole to earthworms (Eisenia fetida) in soil by oleic acid-embedded cellulose acetate membrane

Passive sampling technology is widely used to evaluate the bioavailability of pollutants. However, relatively few studies have used passive sampling membranes (PSMs) to evaluate the environmental risks of pollutants in soil, particularly pesticides. Here, the bioavailability of difenoconazole to earthworms (Eisenia fetida) was evaluated using an oleic acid-embedded cellulose acetate membrane (OECAM) for the first time. Difenoconazole reached 94 % equilibrium (T94%) within 1 d in OECAM. For soil pore water, the freely dissolved concentration (Cfree) of difenoconazole was determined using OECAM (R2 = 0.969). In the soil system, a strong linear correlation between the difenoconazole concentration in OECAM and earthworms was observed (R2 = 0.913). The bioavailability of difenoconazole was affected by the soil type and biochar content. The higher the content of soil organic matter and biochar, the lower the concentration of difenoconazole in earthworms, OECAM, and soil pore water. The concentrations of difenoconazole in pore water, earthworms, and OECAM decreased by 65.3, 42.0, and 41.6 %, respectively, when 0.5 % biochar was added. Difenoconazole mainly enters OECAM and earthworms through passive diffusion with similar uptake pathways. Therefore, the bioavailability of difenoconazole to earthworms in different soils can be evaluated using the OECAM.

Bioavailability evaluation of epoxiconazole and difenoconazole in rice and the influence of dissolved organic matter in reducing uptake and translocation

The aim of this study was to assess the bioavailability of epoxiconazole (EPO) and difenoconazole (DIF) in rice plants by evaluating their uptake, translocation, and accumulation. The results showed that the concentration of DIF in the roots was approximately three times higher than EPO, and both accumulated mainly in the roots. In addition, EPO continued to be transported from stems to leaves, causing a rise in its concentration in leaves. Contrastingly, only a minimal amount of DIF was transported to the leaves. This phenomenon is mainly governed by their differing octanol-water partition coefficient. The effects of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on the accumulation of EPO and DIF in the roots were similar to those of the freely dissolved concentration measured by OECAMs. The concentrations of EPO and DIF in the roots and OECAMs consistently decreased with increasing DOC levels. Furthermore, a significant linear relationship was observed between the EPO and DIF concentrations in root and OECAMs. We also confirmed the accuracy and usefulness of the OECAMs method in predicting the bioavailability of EPO and DIF in rice roots. Therefore, OECAMs show good potential for use as a passive sampler to evaluate the bioavailability of EPO and DIF.

Isotherm and kinetic investigations of sawdust-based biochar modified by ammonia to remove methylene blue from water

Chemical industry effluent may pose significant environmental risks to both human health and the economy if it is not properly managed. As a result, scientists and decision-makers are paying increasing attention to developing a sustainable, low-cost wastewater treatment technique. This work aims to investigate the adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) dye present in water using biochar derived from sawdust modified by boiling in an ammonia solution (SDBA). The properties of SDBA were characterized by BET, SEM, XRD, BJH, FT-IR, DTA, EDX and TGA analyses. The presence of -OH and -NH groups in SDBA was confirmed by FTIR, which proved that the NH4OH treatment of biochar successfully added nitrogen groups on its surface. The influence of pH (2 to 12), MB dye initial concentration (20 to 120 mg/L), adsorbent dosage (0.5 to 4.0 g/L) and contact time (0 to 180 min) on the adsorption process has been investigated. The adsorption of MB dye is more favorable at basic pH, with optimum adsorption at pH 8. Using a starting concentration of 20 mg/L of MB dye and a 4.0 g/L SDBA dose, the maximum percent clearance of MB dye was 99.94%. Experimental results were fitted to the Freundlich (FIM), Tempkin (TIM) and Langmuir (LIM) isotherm models (IMs). The FIM fitted the equilibrium data well, with a 643.74 mg/g Qm. Various error function models were used to test the data obtained from IMs. According to Error Function results, experimental data showed that it fits better for LIM and FIM. Kinetic studies indicated that the MB dye adsorption procedure followed pseudo-second-order (PSOM) kinetics based on film diffusion (FDM), pseudo-first-order (PFOM) and intra-particle diffusion models (IPDM). MB dye sorption on the SDBA involved electrostatic interaction, surface participation, hydrogen bond and π-π interactions. The adsorption mechanism of MB dye by SDBA was proposed as physical adsorption via the electrostatic attraction process. SDBA is an effective adsorbent in removing MB dye from water. Six adsorption-desorption cycles of the MB dye were run through the regeneration of SDBA with only a minimal amount of adsorption capacity loss, demonstrating the reusability of manufactured SDBA.

Predicting the bioavailability of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments: ZIF-8/h-BN solid-phase microextraction versus Tenax extraction

The occurrence of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in sediments has been widely reported, but research on NPAH bioavailability is lacking. In this study, a self-made zeolite imidazolate framework-8/hexagonal boron nitride (ZIF-8/h-BN) solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber and commercial Tenax are compared as efficient tools to predict the bioavailability of NPAHs in sediments with bioassays using Cipangopaludina chinensis. During the process of SPME, the NPAH concentrations on the ZIF-8/h-BN fibers reached extraction equilibrium after 72 h. The fiber extraction of NPAHs in sediments was well-fitted by the pseudo first-order kinetic model with a rate constant of 2 × 10^-2 h^-1 (R² > 0.98). The extraction rates ranking of NPAHs in sediments was 2-nitrobiphenyl>1-nitropyrene>5-nitroacenaphthene>2-nitrofluorene. Compared with SPME, NPAH concentrations reached equilibrium after 168 h for the Tenax extraction. The orders of magnitude of fast, slow, and very slow desorption rate constants were 10^-1, 10^-2, and 10^-4, respectively. At extraction equilibrium (168 h), the SPME was close to the bioavailability of the NPAHs in sediments to Cipangopaludina chinensis with a slope statistically approximated to one. In addition, the linear regression for SPME (R² = 0.7285) was slightly higher than that of the Tenax extraction (R² = 0.7168) over a short time (6 h). This could be because the coating material of ZIF-8/h-BN can rapidly adsorb freely dissolved NPAHs, and the SPME fibers can accurately predict the bioaccumulated concentrations of NPAHs in exposed organisms by measuring the concentration of NPAHs in the pore water of sediment. This study provides a time-saving and easy procedure to predict the bioavailability of NPAHs in sediments.

Extraction and determination of flubendiamide insecticide in food samples: A review

Flubendiamide (FBD) is the first commercially available phthalic acid diamide that targets ryanodine receptors (RyRs) in insects, which play a major role in lepidoptera control. However, excessive use of FBD can influence the quality of treated products leading to toxic effects on human health. The availability of rapid and convenient methods for evaluating FBD amount in the environment is necessary. Therefore, analytical methods were developed for the determination of residues of FBD and its metabolite desiodo in different food matrices like tomato, cabbage, pigeon pea, apple, chilli and rice. The current review carries forward methods for FBD residues analysis in foods by using several chromatographic techniques including sample preparation steps. The comparison between the different methods employed for quantitative and qualitative analysis of food quality and safety is also discussed. Liquid chromatography (LC) is the predominant analytical method for assessing the quality of foods treated with FBD. Studies related to LC coupled multichannel detector (Ultraviolet (UV), Mass spectrometry (MS)) are also applied to detect pesticide residues. Extraction and clean up steps are essential to obtain reliable results. Moreover, this review reports the allowed limits of residues for the safety of consuming products treated with FBD.

Enrichment of diamide insecticides from environmental water samples using metal-organic frameworks as adsorbents for determination by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

A series of metal-organic frameworks composed of different metal ions and organic linkers were facilely synthesized and used as adsorbents for five diamide insecticides for the first time. Among them, MIL-101-NH₂ performed much better than other materials due to extraordinarily high specific surface area, strong water stability, specific interaction with analytes. A sensitive method was developed with MIL-101-NH₂ based dispersive solid phase extraction combining with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (dSPE-LC-MS/MS). Important parameters including adsorbent amount, enrichment time, elution solvent and volume, pH and salt effect were investigated to achieve the best enrichment efficiency. At selected conditions, the proposed method showed ultrahigh sensitivity with limits of detection low to 0.01-0.03 ng/mL, which was 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than reported methods. Wide linearity in the range of 0.03-1000 ng/mL (chlorantraniliprole, cyantraniliprole) and 0.1-2000 ng/mL (flubendiamide, cyclaniliprole, tetrachlorantraniliprole) were established with satisfactory coefficient of determination. The method was successfully used for analyzing of diamide insecticides in environmental water samples and flubendiamide was detected in several samples. This work demonstrated the first example of developing novel nanomaterials in trace amount diamide insecticide enrichment from practical samples, which opens a new perspective in establishing nanomaterial-based sample preparation method for diamide insecticide analysis.

Accumulation of epoxiconazole from soil via oleic acid-embedded cellulose acetate membranes and bioavailability evaluation in earthworms (Eisenia fetida)

A passive sampler in the soil environment is a relatively novel technique and has had quite limited applications, especially for pesticides. Oleic acid-embedded cellulose acetate membranes (OECAMs) were developed to evaluate the bioavailability of epoxiconazole (EPO) to earthworms (Eisenia fetida). The uptake of EPO by OECAMs (R² = 0.975) and earthworms (R² = 0.938) was compared and found to follow a two-compartment kinetic model. EPO sampling by OECAMs reached equilibrium (94%) within 2 d. OECAM could be used to determine the concentration of EPO in soil porewater. Furthermore, a significant linear relationship (R² = 0.990) was observed between the EPO concentrations in earthworms and the OECAMs. The EPO concentrations in the porewater and OECAMs were lower in soils with a higher organic matter (OM) content. The EPO concentrations in the porewater, earthworms, and OECAMs decreased by 64.4, 49.0, and 56.1%, respectively, in the presence of 0.5% biochar, compared with the control. Furthermore, the use of OECAMs versus earthworms for soil testing also allows you to avoid factors that increase variance in organisms, such as avoidance behaviors or feeding. Therefore, OECAMs show good potential for use as a passive sampler to evaluate the bioavailability of EPO.

Novel insights into the adsorption of organic contaminants by biochar: A review

With rising concerns in the practical application of biochar for the remediation of environment influenced by various organic contaminants, a critical review to facilitate insights the crucial role that biochar has played in wastewater and polluted soil decontamination is urgently needed. This research therefore aimed to describe different intriguing dimensions of biochar interactions with organic contaminants, which including: (i) an introduction of biochar preparation and the related physicochemical properties, (ii) an overview of mechanisms and factors controlling the adsorption of organic contaminants onto biochar, and (iii) a summary of the challenges and an outlook of the further research needs in this issue. In the light of the survey consequences, the appearance of biochar indicates the potential in substituting the existing costly adsorbents, and it has been proved that biochar is one promising adsorbent for organic pollutants adsorption removal from water and soil. However, some research gaps, such as dynamic adsorption, potential environmental risks, interactions between biochar and soil microbes, novel modification techniques, need to be further investigated to facilitate its practical application. This research will be conductive to better understanding the adsorption removal of organic contaminants by biochar.

Comparative study on polychlorinated biphenyl sorption to activated carbon and biochar and the influence of natural organic matter

The sorption isotherms of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on carbons (coal based activated carbon named AC and hardwood derived biochar named BC) and natural organic matter (NOM) loaded carbons were examined and carbon-water partition coefficients (K_C-W-PCB) were calculated. The purpose was to accurately predict the effectiveness of in-situ carbon treatments on the sediment impacted with hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs). For 1 month sorption, AC K_C-W-PCB values were significantly higher than BC, corresponding to the much larger surface area (particularly in mesopores) for AC. BC K_C-W-PCB values were correlated with PCB total surface area (TSA) and octanol-water partition coefficient (logK_ow). After loading with NOM, AC adsorption to PCBs strongly reduced and the fitted Freundlich exponents (n) decreased with increasing NOM level. However, NOM loading slightly impacted BC sorption and exhibited an opposite effect on BC n values. It is illustrated that the sorption mechanisms are different between AC and BC thereby the influences of NOM on sorption characteristics differ vastly. As the sorption time increased from 1 month to 6 months, an increase is observed in BC sorption extent but simultaneously NOM reduction effect on BC sorption increases, implying that more accurately evaluating BC application as an in-situ sorbent amendment for HOC impacted sediment need further investigation. On the contrary, AC adsorption attenuation caused by NOM coating greatly decreases over time, encouraging AC application as a sediment amendment.

Responses of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms to biochar and compost amendments of heavy metals-polluted soil

Heavy metal pollution affects soil ecological function. Biochar and compost can effectively remediate heavy metals and increase soil nutrients. The effects and mechanisms of biochar and compost amendments on soil nitrogen cycle function in heavy-metal contaminated soils are not fully understood. This study examined how biochar, compost, and their integrated use affected ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms in heavy metal polluted soil. Quantitative PCR was used to determine the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB). Ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) activity was evaluated by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results showed that compost rather than biochar improved nitrogen conversion in soil. Biochar, compost, or their integrated application significantly reduced the effective Zn and Cd speciation. Adding compost obviously increased As and Cu effective speciation, bacterial 16S rRNA abundance, and AMO activity. AOB, stimulated by compost addition, was significantly more abundant than AOA throughout remediation. Correlation analysis showed that AOB abundance positively correlated with NO₃^--N (r = 0.830, P < 0.01), and that AMO activity had significant correlation with EC (r = -0.908, P < 0.01) and water-soluble carbon (r = -0.868, P < 0.01). Those seem to be the most vital factors affecting AOB community and their function in heavy metal-polluted soil remediated by biochar and compost.

Application of biochar for the remediation of polluted sediments

Polluted sediments pose potential threats to environmental and human health and challenges to water management. Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced through pyrolysis of biomass waste, which performs well in soil amendment, climate improvement, and water treatment. Unlike soil and aqueous solutions, sediments are both the sink and source of water pollutants. Regarding in-situ sediment remediation, biochar also shows unique advantages in removing or immobilizing inorganic and organic pollutants (OPs). This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current methods of in-situ biochar amendments specific to polluted sediments. Physicochemical properties (pore structure, surface functional groups, pH and surface charge, mineral components) were influenced by the pyrolysis conditions, feedstock types, and modification of biochar. Furthermore, the remediation mechanisms and efficiency of pollutants (heavy metals [HMs] and OPs) vary with the biochar properties. Biochar influences microbial compositions and benthic organisms in sediments. Depending on the location or flow rate of polluted sediments, potential utilization methods of biochar alone or coupled with other materials are discussed. Finally, future practical challenges of biochar as a sediment amendment are addressed. This review provides an overview and outlook for sediment remediation using biochar, which will be valuable for further scientific research and engineering applications.

Versatile modelling of polyoxymethylene-water partition coefficients for hydrophobic organic contaminants using linear and nonlinear approaches

Environmental fate or transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) depends on the partitioning properties of compounds within various environmental phases. Due to the wide application of polyoxymethylene (POM) in the passive sampling technique, several in silico models were developed to predict POM-water partition coefficients (K_POM-w) in accordance with the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is an attempt to combine conventional linear method (multiple linear regression, MLR) and popular nonlinear algorithm (artificial neural network, ANN) for estimating partition coefficients of HOCs. All models were performed on a dataset of 210 chemicals from 13 different classes. The polyparameter linear free energy relationship (pp-LFER) model included 5 molecular descriptors, namely, E, S, A, B and V, and predicted log K_POM-w with R²_adj of 0.825. The values of statistical parameters including R²_adj, Q²_ext, RMSE_tra and RMSE_ext for quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR)-MLR and QSPR-ANN models with four descriptors (ALOGP, MeanDD, E1m and Mor24s) were: (0.928, 0.877, 0.498 and 0.649) and (0.943, 0.905, 0.443 and 0.571), with high similarity for both models, which confirmed the robustness, significance, and remarkable prediction accuracy of the QSPR models. Moreover, the mechanism interpretation revealed that the molecular volume and hydrophobicity had a major impact on distribution procedure of HOCs. The models developed herein, with the broad applicability domain (AD), provide suitable tools to fill the experimental data gap for untested chemicals and help researchers better understand the mechanistic basis of adsorption behavior of POM.

Herbicide Exposure and Toxicity to Aquatic Primary Producers

The aim of the present review was to give an overview of the current state of science concerning herbicide exposure and toxicity to aquatic primary producers. To this end we assessed the open literature, revealing the widespread presence of (mixtures of) herbicides, inevitably leading to the exposure of non-target primary producers. Yet, herbicide concentrations show strong temporal and spatial variations. Concerning herbicide toxicity, it was concluded that the most sensitive as well as the least sensitive species differed per herbicide and that the observed effect concentrations for some herbicides were rather independent from the exposure time. More extensive ecotoxicity testing is required, especially considering macrophytes and marine herbicide toxicity. Hence, it was concluded that the largest knowledge gap concerns the effects of sediment-associated herbicides on primary producers in the marine/estuarine environment. Generally, there is no actual risk of waterborne herbicides to aquatic primary producers. Still, median concentrations of atrazine and especially of diuron measured in China, the USA and Europe represented moderate risks for primary producers. Maximum concentrations due to misuse and accidents may even cause the exceedance of almost 60% of the effect concentrations plotted in SSDs. Using bioassays to determine the effect of contaminated water and sediment and to identify the herbicides of concern is a promising addition to chemical analysis, especially for the photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicides using photosynthesis as endpoint in the bioassays. This review concluded that to come to a reliable herbicide hazard and risk assessment, an extensive catch-up must be made concerning macrophytes, the marine environment and especially sediment as overlooked and understudied environmental compartments.

Crystalline Characteristics, Mechanical Properties, Thermal Degradation Kinetics and Hydration Behavior of Biodegradable Fibers Melt-Spun from Polyoxymethylene/Poly(l-lactic acid) Blends

A series of polyoxymethylene (POM)/poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) blends were prepared by melt extrusion, and their spinnability was confirmed by rheological characterizations, successive self-nucleation, and annealing thermal fractionation analysis. The bicomponent fibers were prepared by means of the melt-spinning and post-drawing technologies using the above-obtained blends, and their morphology, crystalline orientation characteristics, mechanical performance, hydration behavior, and thermal degradation kinetics were studied extensively. The bicomponent fibers exhibited a uniform diameter distribution and compact texture at the ultimate draw ratio. Although the presence of PLLA reduced the crystallinity of the POM domain in the bicomponent fibers, the post-drawing process promoted the crystalline orientation of lamellar folded-chain crystallites due to the stress-induced crystallization effect and enhanced the crystallinity of the POM domain accordingly. As a result, the bicomponent fibers achieved the relatively high tensile strength of 791 MPa. The bicomponent fibers exhibited a partial hydration capability in both acid and alkali media and therefore could meet the requirement for serving as a type of biodegradable fibers. The introduction of PLLA slightly reduced the thermo-oxidative aging property and thermal stability of the bicomponent fibers. Such a combination of two polymers shortened the thermal lifetime of the bicomponent fibers, which could facilitate their natural degradation for ecological and sustainable applications.

Effects of biochar on the earthworm (Eisenia foetida) in soil contaminated with and/or without pesticide mesotrione

The plant-derived biochars act as soil conditioners, and thus may influence biological interactions in the soil environment. However, their unintended negative and positive effects on soil organisms remain largely understudied. Therefore, we investigated the effect of 0, 1, 3, and 10% of wheat straw-derived biochar amendments on earthworm (Eisenia foetida) activity in the soil contaminated with and/or without pesticide mesotrione (10 mg/kg dry soil) after 28 days of incubation. The pesticide mesotrione did not affect earthworm growth or reproduction; however, it induced oxidative stress and DNA damage. Although biochar application significantly decreased the concentration of mesotrione in earthworms, it delayed the degradation of pesticide in the soil environment. Compared to zero amendment, the amendment of 1 and 3% of biochar significantly increased (P < 0.05) the earthworm weight and reduced the toxicity effects of mesotrione on earthworms. However, the application of 10% biochar significantly decreased (P < 0.05) earthworm growth and caused DNA damage even in the absence of mesotrione. This study suggests that it is necessary to investigate the effects of different levels of biochar amendments on earthworms and other soil organisms in agricultural fields to develop a broader understanding about the use of biochar and its consequences on soil health.

The dissipation of cyazofamid and its main metabolite in soil response oppositely to biochar application

Biochars derived from rice straw (RS), corn straw (CS), chicken manure (CM) and tire rubber (TR) were applied to soil to investigate their effects on the dissipation of cyazofamid and its metabolite CCIM (4-chloro-5-p-tolylimidazole-2-carbonitrile), with high acute toxicity compared to cyazofamid. The enhancement of cyazofamid dissipation followed the order of CS > RS > CM, whereas TR depressed the cyazofamid dissipation. Adsorption, hydrolysis and microbial degradation were all involved in cyazofamid dissipation. CM and CS enhanced the contribution of biodegradation to cyazofamid dissipation, which might be related with the shifted microbial community. More importantly, CCIM residual was drastically increased by 8-15 times after biochar application, regardless of biochar type. In total, this study shed light on the issue of build-up of metabolites in biochar-amended soil, especially for metabolites having higher toxicities than parent compounds, providing new insights into potential risk of biochar application for soil remediation.
