Adsorption/desorption kinetics and breakthrough of gaseous toluene for modified microporous-mesoporous UiO-66 metal organic framework

Redox-Driven Formation of Mn(III) in Ice

Redox-driven reactions involving Mn(II) species adsorbed at Mn(IV) oxide surfaces can release Mn(III) in the form of dissolved Mn(III)-ligand species in natural waters. Using pyrophosphate (PP) as a model ligand, we show that freezing accelerates and enhances Mn(III) formation in the form of Mn(III)-PP complexes. This freeze-promoted reaction is explained by the concentration of Mn(IV) oxides and solutes (Mn(II), Na+, and Cl-) into the minute fractions of liquid water locked between ice (micro)crystals - the Liquid Intergrain Boundary (LIB). Time-resolved freezing experiments at -20 °C showed that Mn(III) yields were greatest at low salt (NaCl) content. In contrast, high salt content promoted Mn(III) formation through chloride complexation, although yields became lower as the cryosalt mineral hydrohalite (NaCl·2H2O) dehydrated the LIB by drawing water into its structure. Consecutive freeze-thaw cycles also showed that dissolved Mn(III) concentrations increased within the very first few minutes of each freezing event. Because each thaw event released unreacted PP previously locked in ice, each sequential freeze-thaw cycle increased Mn(III) yields, until ∼80% of the Mn was converted to Mn(III). This was achieved after only seven cycles. Finally, temperature-resolved freezing experiments down to -50 °C showed that the LIB produced the greatest quantities of Mn(III) at -10 °C, where the volumes were greater. Reactivity was however sustained in ice formed below the eutectic (-21.3 °C), down to -50 °C. We suspect that this sustained reactivity was driven by persistent forms of supercooled water, such as Mn(IV) oxide-bound thin water films. By demonstrating the freeze-driven production of Mn(III) by comproportionation of dissolved Mn(II) and Mn(IV) oxide, this study highlights the potentially important roles these reactions could play in the production of pools of Mn(III) in natural water and sediments of mid- and high-latitudes environments exposed to freeze-thaw episodes.

Insights into the role of VOCs properties on thermal desorption behaviors of two porous polymeric resins

Desorption is a critical process in the recovery or post-treatment of adsorbents saturated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, the thermal desorption behaviors for eight VOCs on hypercrosslinked polymeric resin (HPR) and macroporous polymeric resin (MPR) were investigated through isothermal desorption and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Compared with MPR, HPR with more micropores exhibited a lower desorption rate constant, lower desorption efficiency and higher desorption activation energy due to the strong binding energy generated between VOCs molecules and narrow micropores. As the polarizability of VOCs increased, the desorption rate constants on two porous polymeric resins decreased, while the desorption activation energy showed an incremental trend. Excellent linear correlations were observed between VOC polarizability and desorption rate constants (R2 = 0.957 for HPR and R2 = 0.940 for MPR) as well as between VOC polarizability and desorption activation energy (R2 = 0.981 for HPR and R2 = 0.969 for MPR). Furthermore, a polyparameter linear free energy relationship (PP-LFER) was developed to explore the influences of intermolecular interactions on desorption behaviors of VOCs on porous polymeric resins. The results indicated that the dispersive interaction, which is directly related to polarizability of VOCs, was the primary factor influencing the desorption activation energy of VOCs on porous polymeric resins. The find from this study helps evaluate fleetly and availably the desorption properties of VOCs based on their polarizability.

The removal of toluene by thermoscatalytic oxidation using CeO2-based catalysts:a review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. Thermal catalytic oxidation based on cerium dioxide based (CeO2-based) catalysts is widely used in the degradation of toluene. However, new problems and challenges such as how to reduce the energy consumption during catalytic oxidation, improve the anti-poisoning performance of catalysts, and enhance the multi-species synergistic catalytic ability of catalysts continue to emerge. On this basis, we systematically summarize the current status of research progress on the thermocatalytic oxidation of toluene based on CeO2-based catalysts. Firstly, we summarized the rules on how to improve the catalytic performance and anti-poisoning performance of CeO2-based catalysts; Secondly, we discussed the effect of light reaction conditions on the thermal coupled catalytic oxidation of toluene; In addition to this, we explored the current status of synergistic multi-pollutant degradation, mainly of toluene; Finally, we summarized the mechanism of catalytic oxidation of toluene by combining theoretical simulation calculations, in-situ infrared analyses, and other means. We present the promising applications of CeO2-based catalysts in the catalytic oxidation of toluene, and hope that these summaries will provide an important reference for the catalytic treatment of VOCs.

A bimetallic organic framework based fluorescent aptamer probe for the detection of zearalenone in cereals

In this work, a bimetallic organic framework (Cu/UiO-66) based "turn on" fluorescent aptamer probe was designed for the high-efficiency detection of zearalenone (ZEN). In the probe, the 6-carboxyfluorescein-labeled aptamer (FAM-Apt) was used as the recognition element, and the electrostatic interaction, coordination effect, and photoinduced electron transfer effect between FAM-Apt and Cu/UiO-66 caused fluorescence quenching. When ZEN existed, FAM-Apt recognized ZEN specifically, causing FAM-Apt to separate from the surface of Cu/UiO-66 and recovery of fluorescence. Under the optimal conditions, the probe had a linear detection range of 0.5 ng/mL-60 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 0.048 ng/mL. The application potential of the probe was verified by real detection of various cereals and their products, with a standard recovery from 83.67 %-106.8 %. The development of this efficient, rapid, and sensitive ZEN detection method provides a new platform for the quality control of cereals and their products.

Defective UiO-66 metal-organic gels for optimizing gaseous toluene capture

Developing high-performance sorbents for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is urgently required for environmental cleaning and personnel protection. Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been deemed attractive candidates for gaseous toluene capture due to their superior stability and high adsorption capacity. However, the practical application of powdered Zr-MOFs is hindered by inherent limitations. Here, we report a series of defective UiO-66 metal-organic gels (G66-X) with variable missing linker deficiency by altering the modulator concentration. The defect concentration of the adsorbents has a significant impact on the porosity and gaseous toluene adsorption capacity. Dynamic breakthrough results reveal that G66-9 demonstrates optimal breakthrough time of 336 min/g and uptake amount of 334 mg/g, outperforming those of many other typical toluene adsorbents. The breakthrough times and the uptake capacities dramatically decrease with the increase of adsorption temperature. An outstanding regeneration performance of adsorbents can almost maintain even after five adsorption-desorption cycles.

Perspective into ion storage of pristine metal-organic frameworks in capacitive deionization

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring tunable conductivity, tailored pore/structure and high surface area, have emerged as promising electrode nanomaterials for ion storage in capacitive deionization (CDI) and garnered tremendous attention in recent years. Despite the many advantages, the perspective from which MOFs should be designed and prepared for use as CDI electrode materials still faces various challenges that hinder their practical application. This summary proposes design principles for the pore size, pore environment, structure and dimensions of MOFs to precisely tailor the surface area, selectivity, conductivity, and Faradaic activity of electrode materials based on the ion storage mechanism in the CDI process. The account provides a new perspective to deepen the understanding of the fundamental issues of MOFs electrode materials to further meet the practical applications of CDI.

Defects-Induced Single-Atom Anchoring on Metal-Organic Frameworks for High-Efficiency Photocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction

Aiming to improve the photocatalytic activity in N2 fixation to produce ammonia, herein, we proposed a photochemical strategy to fabricate defects, and further deposition of Ru single atoms onto UiO-66 (Zr) framework. Electron-metal-support interactions (EMSI) were built between Ru single atoms and the support via a covalently bonding. EMSI were capable of accelerating charge transfer between Ru SAs and UiO-66, which was favorable for highly-efficiently photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic production rate of ammonia improved from 4.57 μmol g-1  h-1 to 16.28 μmol g-1  h-1 with the fabrication of defects onto UiO-66, and further to 53.28 μmol g-1  h-1 with Ru-single atoms loading. From the DFT results, it was found that d-orbital electrons of Ru were donated to N2 π✶-antibonding orbital, facilitating the activation of the N≡N triple bond. A distal reaction pathway was probably occurred for the photocatalytic N2 reduction to ammonia on Ru1 /d-UiO-66 (single Ru sites decorated onto the nodes of defective UiO-66), and the first step of hydrogenation of N2 was the reaction determination step. This work shed a light on improving the photocatalytic activity via feasibly anchoring single atoms on MOF, and provided more evidences to understand the reaction mechanism in photocatalytic reduction of N2 .

Magnetic solid phase extraction coupled to HPLC-UV for highly sensitive analysis of mono-hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine

BACKGROUND

As a common pollutant, the carcinogenic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have garnered considerable attention. Trace metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be detected in urine as a non-invasively approach to monitor the exposure level. Nonetheless, the urine samples have the disadvantages of being large in volume and containing numerous impurities. Given the growing demand to study metabolites with low abundance and potential biomarkers, there is a pressing need for a preconcentration and high-throughput technique for effectively handling complex liquid samples.

RESULTS

Polystyrene-coated magnetic nanoparticles were used to establish a novel magnetic extraction method for monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples. Polystyrene magnetic nanoparticles are an ideal absorbent for solid-phase extraction. After the material was mixed with the sample and adsorbed the target analyte, the analytes on the material were eluted and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography. Influencing factors were optimized, and the proposed method achieved desirable sensitivity in analyzing low-abundance metabolites in large volumes of complex urine samples. The recoveries of intra-day and inter-day were 78.0-118.0 % and 81.0 %-115.0 %, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day reproducibility were less than 4.5 % and 8.6 %, respectively. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.009-0.041 ng mL-1, and the limits of quantification were in the range of 0.030-0.135 ng mL-1.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

The application of reusable polystyrene-coated magnetic solid-phase nanoparticles as adsorbents makes the extraction of monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from urine samples economical and environmentally benign. The proposed method is simple, sensitive, and efficient compared to existing techniques. The nanoparticles are easy to prepare, showing potential for rapid screening of complex bulk bio-samples in batches with high efficiency and low budget.

Heating-induced adsorption promoting the efficient removal of toluene by the metal-organic framework UiO-66 (Zr) under visible light

The removal of indoor/outdoor toluene by photocatalysis has drawn much attention due to its low energy consumption and easy availability. However, light inevitably generates heat, and pollutants desorb from catalysts as the temperature rises, which is not beneficial to degradation. Contrast to the frequently occurred phenomena, we firstly found that the adsorption capacity of UiO-66 (Zr) on toluene increased with increasing temperature as adsorption isotherms and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectra (in-situ FTIR) showed. The optimum temperature was 30 °C. This stage in which adsorption capacity was positively correlated with temperature was called heating-induced adsorption, which achieved a toluene removal efficiency of 69.6 %. By density functional theory (DFT) calculations and changing the metal centers and organic ligands of UiO-66 (Zr) respectively, we disclosed that the heating-induced adsorption was mainly related to the π-π stacking interaction of MOF ligands and toluene. The analysis of samples before and after adsorption showed that the interaction between UiO-66 (Zr) and adsorbed toluene facilitated the charge transfer and prolonged the carrier lifetime, leading to the increase of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in photocatalysis. Therefore, a synergistic effect between heating-induced adsorption and photocatalysis was proposed by analyzing the adsorption of toluene on UiO-66 (Zr) in detail. This work provided new viewpoint to understand the role of concomitant heat contributed to the adsorption and degradation of toluene during photocatalysis.

Effective triclosan removal by using porous aromatic frameworks in continuous fixed-bed column studies

Triclosan (TCS) has been regarded as an emerging contaminant in aquatic systems, making its efficient removal of great significance. In this study, NPVMo@iPAF-1, with a specific surface area of 665 m2/g, was prepared by incorporating (NH4)5H6PV8Mo4O40 into porous aromatic frameworks (PAF). The maximum adsorption capacity of TCS on NPVMo@iPAF-1 reached 917.1 mg/g, as calculated from the Langmuir model. Fixed-bed columns packed with NPVMo@iPAF-1 were employed for TCS removal; the experiment data strongly correlated with the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models under different operational conditions. Pore preservation, electrostatic effects, and the synergistic effect of π-π interactions contributed to the effective adsorption of TCS onto NPVMo@iPAF-1. The NPVMo@iPAF-1 fixed-bed column could be effectively regenerated through in-situ ozonation for more than 10 regeneration cycles. NPVMo@iPAF-1 turned out to be a promising adsorbent for removing TCS not only from pure water but also from reclaimed water and surface water samples.

Investigating the potential of structurally defective UiO-66 for Sb (V) removal from tailing wastewater

Antimony contamination of tailings from the mining process remain attracted a great amount of concern. In this study, defective UiO-66-X crystal materials are rationally constructed using trifluoroacetic acid and hydrochloric acid as modulators for the removal of Sb(V) from actual tailing sand leachates. XRD and TG characterizations reveal that the number and kind of defects in UiO-66 are influenced by the type of modulators and the addition of trifluoroacetic acid makes UiO-66-TFA contain both cluster and ligand defects. Adsorption experiments show that UiO-66 and UiO-66-HCl achieve 100% removal of Sb(V) at pH 7.5 of the tailing sand leachate, and up to 90% removal of Sb(V) by the three materials at pH 2.5. It is noteworthy that the removal rate of Sb(V) by UiO-66-HCl is still satisfactory even under strongly acidic conditions at pH 0.5, with good potential for practical applications. Four kinetic models are used to fit the adsorption data and the analysis shows that the mechanism of Sb(V) adsorption by three adsorbent is all pseudo-second order and chemisorption acts as an important role in the adsorption process. In addition, the fixed bed adsorption experiments show that the material exhibit good prospects for practical applications.

Nanoarchitectonics of Bimetallic MOF@Lab-Grade Flexible Filter Papers: An Approach Towards Real-Time Water Decontamination and Circular Economy

This study presents a novel approach to decontaminate ferrocyanide-contaminated wastewater. The work effectively demonstrates the use of bimetallic Mo/Zr-UiO-66 as a super-adsorbent for rapid sequestration of Prussian blue, a frequently found iron complex in cyanide-contaminated soils/groundwater. The exceptional performance of Mo/Zr-UiO-66 is attributed to the insertion of secondary metallic sites, which deliver synergistic effects, benefiting the inherent qualities of the framework. Moreover, to extend the industrial applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in real-world scenarios, an approach is delivered to structure the nanocrystalline powders into MOF-based macrostructures. The work demonstrates an interfacial process to develop continuous MOF nanostructures on ordinary laboratory-grade filter papers. The novelty of the work lies in the development of robust free-standing filtration materials to purify PB dye-contaminated water. Additionally, the work embraces a circular economy concept to address problems related to resource scarcity, excessive waste production, and maintenance of economic benefits. Consequently, the PB dye-loaded adsorbent waste is re-employed for the adsorption of heavy metals (Pb2+ and Cd2+ ). Simultaneously, the study aims to address the problems related to the real-time handling of powdered adsorbents, and the generation of ecologically harmful secondary waste, thereby, progressing toward a more sustainable system.

High performance photocatalyst TiO2@UiO-66 applied to degradation of methyl orange

MOFs have considerable adsorption capacity due to their huge specific surface area. They have the characteristics of photocatalysts for their organic ligands can absorb photons and produce electrons. In this paper, the photodegradation properties of TiO2 composites loaded with UiO-66 were investigated for the first time for MO. A series of TiO2@UiO-66 composites with different contents of TiO2 were prepared by a solvothermal method. The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was performed using a high-pressure mercury lamp as the UV light source. The effects of TiO2 loading, catalyst dosage, pH value, and MO concentration were investigated. The results showed that the degradation of MO by TiO2@UiO-66 could reach 97.59% with the addition of only a small amount of TiO2 (5 wt%). TiO2@UiO-66 exhibited significantly enhanced photoelectron transfer capability and inhibited efficient electron-hole recombination compared to pure TiO2 in MO degradation. The composite catalyst indicated good stability and reusability when they were recycled three times, and the photocatalytic reaction efficiencies were 92.54%, 88.76%, and 86.90%. The results provide a new option to design stable, high-efficiency MOF-based photocatalysts.

Tailoring the Nanoporosity and Photoactivity of Metal-Organic Frameworks With Rigid Dye Modulators for Toluene Purification

Facile synthesis of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with adjustable porosity and high crystallinity attracts great attention yet remains challenging. Herein, a micromolar amount of dye-based modulator (Rhodamine B (RhB)) is employed to easily and controllably tailor the pore size of a Ti-based metal-organic framework (MIL-125-NH2 ). The RhB used in this method is easily removed by washing or photodegradation, avoiding secondary posttreatment. It is demonstrated that the carboxyl functional group and the steric effects of RhB are indispensable for enlarging the pore size of the MIL-125-NH2 . The resulting hierarchically porous MIL-125-NH2 (RH-MIL-125-NH2 ) exhibits optimized adsorption and photocatalytic activity because the newly formed mesopore with defects concurrently facilitates mass transport of guest molecules (toluene) and photogenerated charge separation. This work offers a meaningful basis for the construction of hierarchically porous MOFs and demonstrates the superiority of the hierarchical pore structure for adsorption and heterogeneous catalysis.

High Proton Conductivity of the UiO-66-NH2-SPES Composite Membrane Prepared by Covalent Cross-Linking

A sulfonated poly(ethersulfone) (SPES)-metal-organic framework (MOF) film with excellent proton conductivity was synthesized by anchoring UiO-66-NH₂ to the main chain of the aromatic polymer through the Hinsberg reaction. The chemical bond was formed between the amino group in MOFs and the -SO₂Cl group in chlorosulfonated poly(ethersulfones) to conduct protons in the proton channel of the membrane, making the membrane have excellent proton conductivity. UiO-66-NH₂ is successfully prepared as a result of the consistency of the experimental and simulated powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns of MOFs. The existence of absorption peaks of characteristic functional groups in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra proved the successful preparation of SPES, PES-SO₂Cl, and a composite film. The results of the AC impedance test indicate that the composite film with a 3% mass fraction has the best proton conductivity of 0.215 S·cm^-1, which is 6.2 times higher than that of the blended film without a chemical bond at 98% RH and 353 K. To our knowledge, there are rarely any reports on the preparation of a composite membrane by directly linking MOFs and the membrane matrix with chemical bonds. This work provides a good way to synthesize the highly conductive proton exchange film.

From polyethylene waste bottles to UIO-66 (Zr) for preconcentration of steroid hormones from river water

Metal-organic framework (UiO-66 (Zr) was synthesized using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and used as an adsorbent for extraction and preconcentration of steroid hormones in river water. Polyethylene waste bottles were used as the source of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) ligands. The UIO-66(Zr), which the PET was made from recycled waste plastics, was used for the first time for the extraction and preconcentration of four different types of steroid hormones in river water samples. Various analytical characterization techniques were employed to characterize the synthesized material. The steroid hormones were detected and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). The results were further validated using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Experimental variables, such as sample pH, the mass of adsorbent and extraction time, were optimized using Box-Behnken design (BBD). The dispersive solid phase extraction method combined with HPLC-DAD, displayed good linearity (0.004-1000 µg/L) low limits of detections (LODs, 1.1-16 ng/L for ultrapure water and 2.6-5.3 ng/L for river water) and limits of quantification (LOQs, 3.7-5.3 ng/L for ultrapure water and 8.7-11.0 ng/L for river water samples) and acceptable extraction recoveries (86-101%). The intraday (n = 10) and interday (n = 5) precisions expressed in terms of relative standard deviations (%RSD) were all less than 5%. The steroid hormones were detected in most of the river water samples (Vaal River and Rietspruit River). The DSPE/HPLC method offered a promising approach for simultaneous extraction, preconcentration and determination of steroid hormones in water.

Swellable Array Strategy Based on Designed Flexible Double Hypercross-linked Polymers for Synergistic Adsorption of Toluene and Formaldehyde

High-capacity adsorption and removal of complex volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from real-world environments is a tough challenge for researchers. Herein, a swellable array adsorption strategy was proposed to realize the synergistic adsorption of toluene and formaldehyde on the flexible double hypercross-linked polymers (FD-HCPs). FD-HCPs exhibited multiple adsorption sites awarded by a hydrophobic benzene ring/pyrrole ring and a hydrophilic hydroxyl structural unit. The array benzene ring, hydroxyl, and pyrrole N sites in FD-HCPs effectively captured toluene and formaldehyde molecules through π-π conjugation and electrostatic interaction and weakened their mutual competitive adsorption. Interestingly, the strong binding force of toluene molecules to the skeleton deformed the pore structure of FD-HCPs and generated new adsorption microenvironments for the other adsorbate. This behavior significantly improved the adsorption capacity of FD-HCPs for toluene and formaldehyde by 20% under multiple VOCs. Moreover, the pyrrole group in FD-HCPs greatly hindered H₂O molecule diffusion in the pore, thus efficiently weakening the competitive adsorption of H₂O toward VOCs. These fascinating properties enabled FD-HCPs to achieve synergistic adsorption for multicomponent VOC vapor under a highly humid environment and overcame single-species VOC adsorption properties on state-of-the-art porous adsorbents. This work provides the practical feasibility of synergistic adsorption to remove complex VOCs in real-world environments.

Selective adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes on mesoporous UiO-66 synthesized using a template-free sonochemistry method: kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic studies

In this study, template-free mesoporous UiO-66(U) has been successfully synthesized in shortened time by sonochemical methods and provided energy savings. The synthesized mesoporous UiO-66(U) demonstrated irregular morphology particle around 43.5 nm according to the SEM image. The N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm indicated an irregular, 8.88 nm pore width mesoporous structure. Ultrasonic irradiation waves greatly altered mesoporous materials. A mechanism for mesoporous UiO-66(U) formation has been proposed based on the present findings. Sonochemical-solvent heat saves 97% more energy than solvothermal. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) outperformed solvothermal-synthesized UiO-66(S) in adsorption. These studies exhibited that mesopores in UiO-66 promote dye molecule mass transfer (MO, CR, and MB). According to kinetics and adsorption isotherms, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models matched experimental results. Thermodynamic studies demonstrated that dye adsorption is spontaneous and exothermically governed by entropy, not enthalpy. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) also showed good anionic dye selectivity in mixed dye adsorption. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) may be regenerated four times while maintaining strong adsorption capability.

Tuning the Dual Active Sites of Functionalized UiO-66 for Selective Adsorption of Yb(III)

The recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from discharged electronic devices or mineral waste water is highly essential but still facing challenges. In this work, two amino-functionalized carboxyl-UiO-66 (UiO-66-COOH-TETA and UiO-66-(COOH)₂-ED) prepared via the postmodification method were employed as the adsorbents for Yb(III) capture. The experimental results revealed their superior adsorption capacities of 161.5 and 202.6 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, their adsorption processes can be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Effects of initial pH and temperature on adsorptions were systematically evaluated, affording an optimal operating condition (i.e., pH of 5.5-6, T of 65 °C, t of 10 h). Moreover, the fabricated materials exhibited great reusability after five adsorption-regeneration cycles. UiO-66-COOH-TETA demonstrated good separation selectivity for Yb(III) over light REEs (i.e., 3.98 of Yb/Ce, 3.51 of Yb/Nd). Based on the density functional theory calculations and characterization analysis (XPS, Zeta, mapping, and IR), the adsorption mechanisms were mainly attributed to significant electrostatic attraction and strong surface complexation between N and O sites and Yb(III).

Atomically dispersed Ti-O clusters anchored on NH2-UiO-66(Zr) as efficient and deactivation-resistant photocatalyst for abatement of gaseous toluene under visible light

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over MOF-based photocatalysts is considerably impeded by the weak activation of reactant molecules on the catalyst surface and low charge carrier mobility. In this study, we demonstrate that atomically dispersed Ti species anchored on NH₂-UiO-66(Zr) (AUiO-66(Zr/Ti)) exhibit high visible-light-responsive photocatalytic activity toward toluene vapor with an 83 % removal efficiency and 89 % CO₂ selectivity. These results are markedly superior to those reported in the literature. More importantly, AUiO-66(Zr/Ti) exhibited excellent catalytic stability during a prolonged reaction, while its pristine AUiO-66(Zr) counterpart underwent rapid catalytic deactivation after a few hours. The optimized sample, AUiO-66(Zr/Ti)-4h, provided extended visible light absorption and enhanced charge carrier mobility due to ligand-to-linker metal charge transfer. Meanwhile, the defect-rich surface of AUiO-66(Zr/Ti)-4h facilitated the activation of H₂O/toluene molecules into the critical intermediates of hydroxyl, benzoic acid, and maleic anhydride, which were effectively converted under visible light illumination. On the basis of the combined results of the PCO of toluene and material characterization, the structure - activity relationship and the related catalytic mechanism are discussed comprehensively.

Green synthesis of a hydrophobic metal-organic gel for the capture of trace odorous hexanal from humid air

The development of superhydrophobic adsorbents for the capture of trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from humid indoor air is still a challenge. Herein, we reported the formation of a granular zinc-based metal-organic gel, i.e., ZIF-412(gel) by optimizing the synthesis conditions. The thermally stable xerogel exhibited high surface area (1008 m²/g), hydrophobicity, and viscosity for self-depositing on the substrate such as non-woven fibers. Dynamic adsorption experiments under various humidity conditions demonstrated as-synthesized ZIF-412(gel) owned excellent VOC (hexanal) adsorption performance with adsorption capacity higher than commercial activated carbon and some water-stable MOFs including ZIF-8, ZIF-67, MIL-101(Cr) and ZIF-414. ZIF-412(gel) could be regenerated at temperature as low as 358 K without obvious loss in adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism of hexanal over ZIF-412(gel) is also simulated by Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC).

In-situ construction of Zr-based metal-organic framework core-shell heterostructure for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

Photocatalysis is an eco-friendly promising approach to the degradation of textile dyes. The majority of reported studies involved remediation of dyes with an initial concentration ≤50 mg/L, which was away from the existing values in textile wastewater. Herein, a simple solvothermal route was utilized to synthesize CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66 core-shell heterojunction photocatalyst for the first time. The photocatalytic performance of the as-synthesized catalysts was assessed through the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes at an initial concentration (100 mg/L). Under simulated solar irradiation, improved photocatalytic performance was accomplished by as-obtained CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66 heterojunction compared to bare UiO-66 and CoFe₂O₄. The overall removal efficiency of dyes (100 mg/L) over CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66 (50 mg/L) reached >60% within 180 min. The optical and photoelectrochemical measurements showed an enhanced visible light absorption capacity as well as effective interfacial charge separation and transfer over CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66, emphasizing the successful construction of heterojunction. The degradation mechanism was further explored, which revealed the contribution of holes (h⁺), superoxide (•O₂ ^-), and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in the degradation process, however, h⁺ were the predominant reactive species. This work might open up new insights for designing MOF-based core-shell heterostructured photocatalysts for the remediation of industrial organic pollutants.

Low-temperature propane oxidative dehydrogenation over UiO-66 supported vanadia catalysts: Role of support confinement effects

Overoxidation is the principal barrier against commercializing propane oxidative dehydrogenation (PODH) catalysts for propylene production. The current approach to reducing overoxidation, i.e., coating the non-selective support surface with a monolayer of active phase, can itself increase the probability of overoxidation of the produced propylene due to polymerization of active phase species. Incorporating the "confinement agents" onto the metal oxide support might be considered as an alternative solution to prevent hydrocarbons from reaching the support and overoxidizing. Herein, the UiO-66 metal-organic framework, which contains numerous organic ligands connected to the zirconia nodes, was used as support for the vanadia active phase to highlight the role of support's confinement effects on the overall catalytic performance toward the PODH. The UiO-66 supported vanadia catalysts with various vanadium loadings were fabricated via an ultrasonic-assisted wet impregnation procedure. The catalytic function is related to the underlying chemical processes at catalyst surfaces using physicochemical characterization techniques, PODH performance measurements, and machine learning tools. The results showed that the catalyst with a relatively low vanadia density of 2.7 nm-2, equivalent to less than half of the entire support surface coverage, could achieve propylene productivity of 4.43 [Formula: see text] , propane conversion of 17.1%, and propylene selectivity of 49.7% at 350 °C.

Selective adsorption of Hg(ii) with diatomite-based mesoporous materials functionalized by pyrrole-thiophene copolymers: condition optimization, application and mechanism

A novel diatomite-based mesoporous material of MCM-41/co-(PPy-Tp) was prepared with MCM-41 as carrier and functionalized with the copolymer of pyrrole and thiophene. The physicochemical characteristics of the as-prepared materials were characterized by various characterization means. The removal behaviour of Hg(ii) was adequately investigated via series of single factor experiments and some vital influence factors were optimized via response surface methodology method. The results exhibit that diatomite-based materials MCM-41/co-(PPy-Tp) has an optimal adsorption capability of 537.15 mg g-1 towards Hg(ii) at pH = 7.1. The removal process of Hg(ii) onto MCM-41/co-(PPy-Tp) is controlled by monolayer chemisorption based on the fitting results of pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. In addition, the adsorption of Hg(ii) ions onto MCM-41/co-(PPy-Tp) is mainly completed through forming a stable complex with N or S atoms in MCM-41/co-(PPy-Tp) by electrostatic attraction and chelation. The as-developed MCM-41/co-(PPy-Tp) displays excellent recyclability and stabilization, has obviously selective adsorption for Hg(ii) in the treatment of actual electroplating wastewater. Diatomite-based mesoporous material functionalized by the copolymer of pyrrole and thiophene exhibits promising application prospect.

Two-Dimensional Transition Metal-Hexaaminobenzene Monolayer Single-Atom Catalyst for Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to valuable fuels and chemicals can not only alleviate the energy crisis but also improve the atmospheric environment. The key is to develop electrocatalysts that are extremely stable, efficient, selective, and reasonably priced. In this study, spin-polarized density function theory (DFT) calculations were used to comprehensively examine the catalytic efficacy of transition metal-hexaaminobenzene (TM-HAB) monolayers as single-atom catalysts for the electroreduction of CO₂. In the modified two-dimensional TM-HAB monolayer, our findings demonstrate that the binding of individual metal atoms to HAB can be strong enough for the atoms to be evenly disseminated and immobilized. In light of the conflicting hydrogen evolution processes, TM-HAB effectively inhibits hydrogen evolution. CH₄ dominates the reduction byproducts of Sc, Ti, V, Cr, and Cu. HCOOH makes up the majority of Zn's reduction products. Co's primary reduction products are CH₃OH and CH₄, whereas Mn and Fe's primary reduction products are HCHO, CH₃OH, and CH₄. Among these, the Ti-HAB reduction products have a 1.14 eV limiting potential and a 1.31 V overpotential. The other monolayers have relatively low overpotentials between 0.01 V and 0.7 V; therefore, we predict that TM-HAB monolayers will exhibit strong catalytic activity in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂, making them promising electrocatalysts for CO₂ reduction.

The Complexity of Comparative Adsorption of C6 Hydrocarbons (Benzene, Cyclohexane, n-Hexane) at Metal-Organic Frameworks

The relatively stable MOFs Alfum, MIL-160, DUT-4, DUT-5, MIL-53-TDC, MIL-53, UiO-66, UiO-66-NH₂, UiO-66(F)₄, UiO-67, DUT-67, NH₂-MIL-125, MIL-125, MIL-101(Cr), ZIF-8, ZIF-11 and ZIF-7 were studied for their C₆ sorption properties. An understanding of the uptake of the larger C₆ molecules cannot simply be achieved with surface area and pore volume (from N₂ sorption) but involves the complex micropore structure of the MOF. The maximum adsorption capacity at p p₀^-1 = 0.9 was shown by DUT-4 for benzene, MIL-101(Cr) for cyclohexane and DUT-5 for n-hexane. In the low-pressure range from p p₀^-1 = 0.1 down to 0.05 the highest benzene uptake is given by DUT-5, DUT-67/UiO-67 and MIL-101(Cr), for cyclohexane and n-hexane by DUT-5, UiO-67 and MIL-101(Cr). The highest uptake capacity at p p₀^-1 = 0.02 was seen with MIL-53 for benzene, MIL-125 for cyclohexane and DUT-5 for n-hexane. DUT-5 and MIL-101(Cr) are the MOFs with the widest pore window openings/cross sections but the low-pressure uptake seems to be controlled by a complex combination of ligand and pore-size effect. IAST selectivities between the three binary mixtures show a finely tuned and difficult to predict interplay of pore window size with (critical) adsorptive size and possibly a role of electrostatics through functional groups such as NH₂.

Excellent Catalytic Performance of Ce–MOF with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies Supported Noble Metal Pt in the Oxidation of Toluene

Metal organic framework (MOF) is a type of porous organic material. In this work, three catalysts loaded with noble metal Pt were prepared by NaBH4 reduction method with three different morphologies of Ce–MOF as carriers. Their physicochemical properties were characterized by XRD, Raman, FTIR, N2 adsorption, SEM, XPS, and TGA. The catalytic performances of different catalysts were evaluated via toluene oxidation and CO2 selectivity. Rod–shaped Pt/MOF–BTC exhibited best catalytic performance compared to Pt/MOF–808 and Pt/UiO–66, its T50 and T90 were 140 °C and 149 °C, respectively. After deducting the effect of specific surface, Pt/MOF–BTC still had the lowest apparent activation energy (62.8 kJ·mol−1), which is due to the abundant atomic Pt and oxygen vacancy content on its surface. After the reaction, the structure of Pt/MOF–BTC may become amorphous according to XRD results. Furthermore, the presence of amorphous structure had no effect on the catalytic activity of the catalyst. In the stability test of Pt/MOF–BTC to toluene oxidation, both toluene conversion and CO2 selectivity remained at 100%, and remained stable for 11 h. Moreover, Pt/MOF–BTC also had better resistance to high weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) or water resistance. The catalyst maintained high catalytic activity for 3 times reusability. This study provides valuable experience for the future work of MOF in the field of VOC catalytic oxidation.

Mechanistic insights into ball milling enhanced montmorillonite modification with tetramethylammonium for adsorption of gaseous toluene

Montmorillonite is widely used for pollutants adsorption due to its porous structure and low price. However, the low specific surface area and small porosity limit its application in gas adsorption field. In this study, montmorillonite was organically modified using a facile dry ball milling method by tetramethylammonium bromide. The adsorption behaviour of toluene as a model VOC compound on organic montmorillonite was systematically investigated through adsorption breakthrough curves, adsorption kinetics and isotherms. After modification by ball milling, the specific surface area of ball milling with tetramethylammonium bromide for montmorillonite modification (BMTMt) was increased from 20.6 m²/g to 186.4 m²/g, and the microporosity proportion was up to 47%. Dynamic adsorption experiments showed that the best performance of BMTMt for toluene (55.9 mg/g) was 6 times higher than that of original montmorillonite (8.8 mg/g). Compared with the water bath preparation method, ball milling method promoted the intercalation of tetramethylammonium bromide into the layers of montmorillonite, resulting in a higher proportion of micropores. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the interaction between tetramethylammonium bromide and montmorillonite was mainly electrostatic forces, and the enhanced adsorption performance for toluene was mainly through microporous filling. BMTMt was proved to be a promising adsorbent for VOCs removal.

Ultrafast Degradation and High Adsorption Capability of a Sulfur Mustard Simulant under Ambient Conditions Using Granular UiO-66-NH2 Metal-Organic Gels

Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been considered as prospective materials for the degradation of nerve chemical warfare agents (CWAs) but show poor catalytic performance toward blister agents. Moreover, the powder issues and the poor adsorption capability also remain as the major challenges for the application of Zr-MOFs in practical CWA detoxification. Herein, a series of defected granular UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic gels are synthesized via adjusting the amount of added concentrated hydrochloric acid for the decontamination of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES), a sulfur mustard simulant. The half-life of 2-CEES decontaminated by defected granular UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic gels can be shortened to 7.6 min, which is the highest reported value for MOFs under ambient conditions. The mechanism of decontamination is that the amino group on the linkers in UiO-66-NH2 MOGs undergoes a substitution reaction with 2-CEES to yield 2-(2-(ethylthio)ethylamino)terephthalic acid, which is less toxic and fixed in the frameworks. The recycling test corroborates that the granular UiO-66-NH2 xerogels possess good stability and reusability. Static adsorption and desorption tests show that UiO-66-NH2 xerogels possess a high 2-CEES vapor adsorption capacity of 802 mg/g after exposure for 1 d and only 28 wt % desorption capacity after air exposure for 7 d. The dual function of ultrafast degradation and high adsorption capability provide a firm foundation for using UiO-66-NH2 xerogels as a future protection media.

One-pot synthesis of oxygen-vacancy-rich Cu-doped UiO-66 for collaborative adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin

UiO-66, as one of the most stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has attracted a lot of attention in the field of adsorption and photocatalysis. However, this application of UiO-66 is still limited due to either the low accessibility of micropores or the poor electron-hole charge separation capability. This study aims to promote UiO-66 accessibility of micropores and charge separation through the construction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and mesopore defects as well as copper incorporation. Herein, mesopore Cu doped UiO-66 with rich OVs was synthesized by a one-pot method and demonstrated high efficiency for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from the aquatic system. First of all, denatured mesopore defects were produced in Cu doped UiO-66 which possessed a 58% increase in specific surface area compared to UiO-66, facilitating the adsorption of molecular oxygen. Secondly, e^- was preferentially trapped by OVs under light irradiation. Electron (e^-) reacted rapidly with the surface adsorbed oxygen to generate superoxide radical (O₂^-). Meanwhile, copper incorporation increased the photocurrent and reduced the interfacial charge transfer resistance, thereby improving the charge separation efficiency. As a result, the adsorption efficiency and photocatalytic performance of mesopore Cu doped UiO-66 with OVs were 8.1 and 3.7 times higher than those of UiO-66, respectively. This study paved a way for the one-step synthesis of MOFs containing OVs and broadened the possibilities of practical applications for photo-induced removal of antibiotics from effluent.

Encapsulating Electron-Rich Pd NPs with Lewis Acidic MOF: Reconciling the Electron-Preference Conflict of the Catalyst for Cascade Condensation via Nitro Reduction

Cascade reactions take advantage of step-saving and facile operation for obtaining chemicals. Herein, catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarene coupled condensation with β-diketone to afford β-ketoenamines is achieved by an integrated nanocatalyst, Pd-e@UiO-66. The catalyst has the structure of an acid-rich metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-encapsulated electron-rich Pd nanoparticles, and it reconciles the electron-effect contradiction of cascade catalytic reactions: catalytic hydrogenation requires an electron-rich catalyst, while condensation requires electron-deficient Lewis acid sites. The catalyst showed good activity, high chemoselectivity, and universal applicability for the synthesis of β-ketoenamines using nitroarenes. More than 30 β-ketoenamines have been successfully prepared with up to 99% yield via the methodology of relay catalysis. The catalyst exhibited excellent stability to maintain its catalytic performance for more than five cycles. Furthermore, we conducted an in-depth exploration of the reaction mechanism with theoretical calculations.

Uniform platinum nanoparticles loaded on Universitetet i Oslo-66 (UiO-66): Active and stable catalysts for gas toluene combustion

Highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles supported UiO-66 catalysts were successfully prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method. Their thermal catalytic performances were evaluated by toluene degradation. The physicochemical properties of the samples were characterized using a series of characterization methods. The catalytic activity of catalysts remained essentially unchanged in the high weight hourly space velocity, stability and water resistance test, which also indicated good catalytic performance. In the reusability test, the catalytic performance was found to be enhanced after the reaction, because of the catalyst might follow a Pt⁰-PtO synergistic catalytic mechanism (similar to Mars-van Krevelen mechanism) and there was a phase transition between Pt⁰ and PtO during the reaction. Firstly, the toluene adsorbed on the catalyst surface was oxidized by the activated lattice oxygen of the PtO. Then, consumption of oxygen atoms led to formation of oxygen vacancies, and finally the molecular oxygen adsorbed by Pt⁰ was activated and passed to the PtO to supplement the oxygen vacancies, forming a redox cycle. In addition, the possible catalytic oxidation mechanism of toluene was also revealed.

Bimetallic Ordered Large-Pore MesoMOFs for Simultaneous Enrichment and Dephosphorylation of Phosphopeptides

Despite the fact that bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could afford multiple functionalities by a synergistic effect of individual metallic centers, their intrinsic microporous structure frequently restricts their wide applications with bulky molecules involved. An urgent need is consequently triggered to design bimetallic hierarchical mesoporous MOFs (mesoMOFs). Herein, Zr/Ce mesoMOFs with a uniform pore size of up to 8 nm was successfully synthesized by a copolymer template strategy with the aid of a Hoffmeister ion. The obtained Zr/Ce mesoMOFs feature high porosity, good chemical and thermal stabilities, and tunable element components, and up to 70% Zr could be incorporated into the mesoporous Ce-based framework without deteriorating its crystallinity. Thanks to the synergistic effect of inherent Ce and Zr as well as the large and open pore channels, a broad range of phosphopeptides with different molecule sizes could be effectively checked out, thanks to their simultaneous enrichment and dephosphorylation capabilities. Such an ability to efficiently concentrate phosphopeptides remained intact even in the presence of abundant non-phosphorylated species. The practical detection of phosphopeptides from human serum was also verified, prefiguring the great potentials of bimetallic large-pore mesoMOFs for the proteome applications.
