Environment occurrence of perfluoroalkyl acids and associated human health risks near a major fluorochemical manufacturing park in southwest of China

Kinetics and mechanism analysis of advanced oxidation degradation of PFOA/PFOS by UV/Fe3+ and persulfate: A DFT study

UV/Fe3+ and persulfate are two promising advanced oxidative degradation systems for in situ remediation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), yet a lack of comprehensive understanding of the degradation mechanisms. For the first time, we used density functional theory (DFT) to calculate the entire reaction pathways of the degradation of PFOA/PFOS in water by UV/Fe3+ and persulfate. In addition, we have deeply explored the different attack pathways driven by •OH and SO4-•, and found that SO4-• determines PFOA/PFOS to obtain PFOA/PFOS free radicals through single electron transfer to initiate the degradation reaction, while •OH determines the speed of PFOA/PFOS degradation reaction. Both degradation reactions were thermodynamically advantageous and kinetically feasible under calculated conditions. Based on the thermodynamic data, persulfate was found to be more favorable for the advanced oxidative degradation of Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). Moreover, for SO4-• and •OH co-existing in the persulfate system, pH will affect the presence and concentration of these two types of free radicals, and low pH is not necessary for the degradation of PFOA/PFOS in the persulfate system. These results can considerably advance our understanding of the PFOA/PFOS degradation process in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), which is driven by •OH and SO4-•. This study provides a DFT calculation process for the mechanism calculation of advanced oxidation degradation of other types of PFCs pollutants, hoping to elucidate the future development of PFCs removal. Further research should focus on determining the advanced oxidation degradation pathways of other types of PFCs, to support the development of computational studies on the advanced oxidation degradation of PFCs.

Non-targeted identification and semi-quantitation of emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in US rainwater

High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to screen for emerging per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in precipitation samples collected in summer 2019 at seven sites in the United States. We previously quantified the concentration of ten PFAS in the rainwater samples using the method of isotopic dilution (Pike et al., 2021). Nine of these targeted analytes belonged to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Screening Level list, herein referred to as EPA-monitored analytes. In this new work, we identify emerging PFAS compounds by liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Several emerging PFAS were detected across all samples, with the most prevalent compounds being C3-C8 hydrogen-substituted perfluorocarboxylic acids (H-PFCAs) and fluorotelomer carboxylic acids (FTCAs). Concentrations of emerging PFAS were in the 10-1000 ng L-1 range (approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude greater than EPA-monitored PFAS) at all sites except Wooster, OH, where concentrations were even higher, with a maximum estimated ΣPFAS of 16 400 ng L-1. The elevated levels of emerging PFAS in the Wooster samples were predominantly even and odd chain-length H-PFCAs and FTCAs comprised of complex mixtures of branched isomers. This unique composition did not match any known manufactured PFAS formulation reported to date, but it could represent thermally transformed by-products emitted by a local point source. Overall, the results indicate that PFAS outside of the standard analyte lists make up a significant and previously unappreciated fraction of contaminants in rainwater collected within the central U.S.-and potentially world-wide-especially in proximity to localized point sources.

Prenatal Exposure to PFAS, Associations with Preterm Birth and Modification by Maternal Estrogen Levels: The Maoming Birth Study

BACKGROUND

Estrogens play a critical role in parturition, and poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which have estrogenic effects, have been associated with preterm birth. However, the impact of estrogens on the association between PFAS and preterm birth is unknown.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to investigate if estrogens modified the association between PFAS and preterm birth, using a nested case-control study design.

METHODS

A total of 371 preterm births and 508 controls were selected from a birth cohort study in China between 2016 and 2018. Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) and its branched isomer, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and its branched isomer, and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) were quantified in maternal serum (mean gestational age of 32 wk). Estradiol and estriol were quantified in cord serum. Preterm birth was defined as live delivery at < 37 gestational weeks. Causal mediation analysis was used to estimate the mediation and interaction effects of estrogen on the association between PFAS and preterm birth. Latent profile analysis was used to identify important estrogen profiles. Multiple linear regression was used to estimate associations between PFAS and preterm birth and interactions between PFAS and estrogens on preterm birth.

RESULTS

Overall, higher odds ratios (ORs) of preterm birth were associated with each 1 ln-unit PFAS increase: PFBA [1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.14, 1.26], PFNA (1.30, 95% CI: 1.21, 1.39), PFOA (1.98, 95% CI: 1.54, 2.55), and PFOS (1.91, 95% CI: 1.76, 2.07) and its branched isomer (1.91, 95% CI: 1.90, 1.92). We detected statistically significant interactions between cord estradiol and PFAS on preterm birth, while no mediation effects of cord estrogen were observed. The ORs of PFOS (4.29, 95% CI: 1.31, 8.25), its branched isomer (6.71, 95% CI: 1.06, 11.91), and preterm birth were greater for participants with high cord estrogen levels than for participants with low cord estrogen levels.

DISCUSSION

Our findings suggest that estrogen modified the association between maternal PFAS exposure and preterm birth. Further studies on maternal PFAS exposure and preterm birth, taking interaction effects of cord estrogens into account, are warranted. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP11377.

N-doped citrate-sludge-derived carbon (NCSC) effectively promotes peroxymonosulfate activation for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) removal with surface-mediated electron transfer mechanism

In traditional wastewater treatment methods, the removal of emerging contaminants including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) can be challenging. To address this, biochar is commonly utilized as an activator for peroxymonosulphate (PMS) to effectively eliminate organic pollutants. Sewage sludge has shown potential as a biochar precursor, but its complex composition and variable iron content, as well as the low specific surface area of the product limit the practical use of iron-dominated sludge-derived catalysts. To overcome this limitation, N-doped citrate-sludge-derived carbon (NCSC) was synthesized, possessing a low iron content (0.29 at%) and a large specific surface area (315.31 m2 g-1). As a comparison, Fe-/N-doped citrate-sludge-derived carbon (Fe-NCSC) was prepared by introducing exogenous iron, resulting in a higher iron content (2.12 at%) but a significantly reduced specific surface area (73.87 m2 g-1). In performance evaluation, the NCSC/PMS system achieved impressive removal efficiency, effectively eliminating 99.8% of PFOA (at an initial concentration of 2 mg L-1) within 60 min, while Fe-NCSC/PMS only achieved 84.6%. The slightly lower reaction rate per specific surface area of NCSC/PMS proved that large specific surface area was NCSC's key advantage. The lower sensitivity of NCSC to pH and water substrates than FeNCSC suggested different activation mechanisms. Further analysis of reactive sites and species showed that the main oxidation mechanism of NCSC/PMS was forming the surface-bound PMS-NCSC complexes at the N sites, followed by PFOA donating electrons to the complexes to be oxidized, which was different from the Fe/N-dominated singlet oxygen mechanism of Fe-NSC/PMS. Furthermore, the reusability of the NCSC was demonstrated, with the removal rate decreasing to only 90.1% after four cycles and recovering to 94.8% after heated regeneration. In conclusion, this study provides a viable method for the elimination of emerging contaminants such as PFOA in water remediation.

Practical application guide for the discovery of novel PFAS in environmental samples using high resolution mass spectrometry

BACKGROUND

The intersection of the topics of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) bring together two disparate and complex subjects. Recently non-targeted analysis (NTA) for the discovery of novel PFAS in environmental and biological media has been shown to be valuable in multiple applications. Classical targeted analysis for PFAS using LC-MS/MS, though growing in compound coverage, is still unable to inform a holistic understanding of the PFAS burden in most samples. NTA fills at least a portion of this data gap.

OBJECTIVES

Entrance into the study of novel PFAS discovery requires identification techniques such as HRMS (e.g., QTOF and Orbitrap) instrumentation. This requires practical knowledge of best approaches depending on the purpose of the analyses. The utility of HRMS applications for PFAS discovery is unquestioned and will likely play a significant role in many future environmental and human exposure studies.

METHODS/RESULTS

PFAS have some characteristics that make them standout from most other chemicals present in samples. Through a series of tell-tale PFAS characteristics (e.g., characteristic mass defect range, homologous series and characteristic fragmentation patterns), and case studies different approaches and remaining challenges are demonstrated.

IMPACT STATEMENT

The identification of novel PFAS via non-targeted analysis using high resolution mass spectrometry is an important and difficult endeavor. This synopsis document will hopefully make current and future efforts on this topic easier to perform for novice and experienced alike. The typical time devoted to NTA PFAS investigations (weeks to months or more) may benefit from these practical steps employed.

PFASs in Soil: How They Threaten Human Health through Multiple Pathways and Whether They Are Receiving Adequate Concern

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been mass-produced and widely applied in consumer and industrial products, resulting in their widespread presence in the environment. Features such as environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and high toxicity even at low doses have made PFASs an increasing concern. This brief review focuses on soil PFASs, especially the effect of soil PFASs on other environmental media and their potential threats to human health through daily diet. Specifically, soil PFASs contamination caused by different pathways was first investigated. Soil pollution from application of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) is generally more severe than that from fluorochemical manufacturing plants, followed by biosolid land use, landfill, and irrigation. Factors, such as carbon chain length of PFASs, wastewater treatment technology, geographical conditions, and regional development level, are related to soil PFASs' pollution. Then, the migration, bioaccumulation, and toxicity characteristics of soil PFASs were analyzed. Short-chain PFASs have higher solubility, mobility, and bioavailability, while long-chain PFASs have higher bioaccumulation potential and are more toxic to organisms. Factors such as soil texture, solution chemistry conditions, enzymes, and fertilization conditions also influence the environmental behavior of PFASs. The risk of human exposure to PFASs through agricultural and animal products is difficult to control and varies depending on living region, age, eating habits, lifestyle, ethnicity, etc. Soil PFASs threaten drinking water safety, affect soil function, and enter food webs, threatening human health. Knowledge gaps and perspectives in these research fields are also included in current work to assist future research to effectively investigate and understand the environmental risks of soil PFASs, thereby reducing human exposure.

Removal of Per-, Poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and multi-biosphere community dynamics in a bacteria-algae symbiotic aquatic ecosystem

The presence of Per-, Poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in aquatic ecosystems has drawn broad concerns in the scientific community due to their biological toxicity. However, little has been explored regarding PFASs' removal in phytoplankton-dominated environments. This study aimed to create a simulated bacteria-algae symbiotic ecosystem to observe the potential transportation of PFASs. Mass distributions showed that sand (63-2000 μm), silt & clay (0-63 μm), the phycosphere (>3 μm plankton), and the free-living biosphere (0.22-3 μm plankton) contained 19.00, 7.78, 5.73 and 2.75% PFASs in their total mass, respectively. Significant correlations were observed between carbon chain lengths and removal rates (R² = 0.822, p < 10^-4). Structural equation models revealed potential PFAS transportation pathways, such as water-phycosphere- free-living biosphere-sand-silt&clay, and water-sand-silt&clay (p < 0.05). The presence of PFASs decreased the bacterial density but increased algal density (p < 0.01) in the planktonic environment, and PFASs with longer carbon chain lengths showed a stronger enhancement in microbial community successions (p < 0.05). In algal metabolisms, chlorophyll-a and carotenoids were the key pigments that resisted reactive oxygen species caused by PFASs. PFBA (perfluorobutyric acid) (10.38-14.68%) and PFTeDA (perfluorotetradecanoic acid) (10.33-15.96%) affected bacterial metabolisms in phycosphere the most, while in the free-living biosphere was most effected by PFPeA (perfluorovaleric acid) (13.21-13.99%) and PFDoA (perfluorododecanoic acid) (10.04-10.50%). The results of this study provide new guidance measures for PFAS removal and management in aquatic environments.

Occurrence of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Ice Cream, Instant Noodles, and Bubble Tea

Food consumption is a significant exposure route to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The concentrations of 27 PFAS in fast food were determined by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. In ice cream, instant noodles, and bubble tea, some PFAS were detected, among which perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluoro-n-butanoic acid, and 6:2 polyfluoroalkyl phosphate monoester showed relatively high concentrations. PFAS migrating from bubble tea cups to the food simulant of 50% ethanol aqueous solution showed a difference compared with those migrating into bubble tea matrices. The migration of 27 PFAS to bubble tea samples indicated that long storage time increased PFAS levels (up to 4.8 times) and so did high storage temperature (up to 7.3 times). The hazard ratio, defined as the ratio of the estimated daily intake and the reference dose, was calculated, and it suggests that the total PFAS exposure risk due to consumption of bubble tea should be of concern.

Ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophyte Hydrilla verticillate to multiple perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) pollutants in aquatic environments

The ubiquitous existence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in aquatic environments might pose toxic potential to ecosystems. To assess the ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophyte to multiple PFAA pollutants in aquatic environments, a typical submerged macrophyte, Hydrilla verticillate, was exposed to solutions with 12 typical PFAAs in the present study. The results showed that PFAAs at concentrations higher than 10 μg/L had significantly passive effects on biomass, relative growth rates, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll autofluorescence. PFAAs could induce the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation in H. verticillate. Significant upregulation of CAT was observed in treatments with more than 10 μg/L PFAAs (p < 0.05). The results also showed that 13.53-20.01% and 19.73-37.72% of PFAAs could be removed in treatments without plants and with H. verticillate, respectively. The removal rates of PFAAs were significantly correlated with perfluoroalkyl chain length in treatments with H. verticillate. The removal of PFAAs was suggested to be related to the uptake of plant tissues and biosorption of microbiota. Furthermore, the dominant microbiota and biomarkers were identified in water and biofilm. Betaproteobacteriales was the most dominant microbiota at the order level. The presence of PFAAs could significantly increase the relative abundance of Micrococcales, Verrucomicrobiales, Rhizobiales, Sphingomonadales, Roseomonas, Cyanobium_PCC_6307, and Synechococcales. Our results provide scientific basis for evaluating the ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophytes in response to multiple PFAA pollutants at environmentally relevant levels, thereby providing insights into PFAA management and removal.

Shift in the distribution and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids by sluice gates in the multi-environment media of rivers

The impact of sluice operations on the distribution and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) remains poorly understood. In this study, the distribution of PFAAs was investigated in water, suspended particles, sediment, and pore water from the upstream and downstream sections of six sluice gates along the Wangyu River, China. The target PFAAs were widely distributed in the dissolved phase (∑PFAAs: 447.61 ± 180.26 ng/L), particle phase (∑PFAAs: 2040.95 ± 1870.88 ng/g dw), sedimentary phase (∑PFAAs: 39.42 ± 35.38 ng/g dw), and pore water phase (∑PFAAs: 8172.54 ± 4278.60 ng/L). Our data suggest predominant detections of short-chain PFAAs such as perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) in the four environmental media. Sediment pore water appeared as an essential repository and potential source for PFAA re-release to the river environment. The levels of PFAAs in the dissolved and suspended particle phase upstream of the sluices were significantly lower than those downstream, while the situation in the sediment and pore water phase was the opposite. Sluice operation caused PFAA redistribution among the multi-environment media but did not change the PFAA composition, which had the significant effect on the partition behavior of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) between particles and water, as well as changed the migration pattern of PFOA, PFNA and PFOS from equilibrium to the migration state. Quantitative prediction models were developed for simulating fate of PFAAs in gate-controlled river, and the major factors affecting the distribution and fate of PFAAs were identified. Our findings provide insights into the redistribution mechanisms of PFAAs and an understanding of their environmental fate.

Removal potential of multiple perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) by submerged macrophytes in aquatic environments: Tolerance of Vallisneria natans and PFAA removal in submerged macrophyte-microbiota systems

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have emerged as a global concern in aquatic environment remediation due to their abundance, persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. To comprehensively understand the removal potential of multiple PFAAs by submerged macrophytes in aquatic environments, systematic investigations into the tolerance of the typical submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans to 12 typical PFAAs and the removal capacity to PFAAs in V. natans-microbiota systems were carried out. Results showed that although PFAAs could induce the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde, V. natans was overall resistant to multiple PFAAs with natural concentrations. Catalase is one of the main strategies of V. natans to alleviate PFAA stress. Microbiota can remove 18.10-30.84% of the PFAAs from the water column. 24.35-73.45% of PFAAs were removed from water in V. natans-microbiota systems. The uptake of plant tissues and the bioaccumulation of microbiota were proposed as the main removal processes. The removal rates were significantly correlated with the perfluorinated carbon atoms numbers (p < 0.05). PFAAs and V. natans increased the relative abundance of Betaproteobacteria, Nostocales, Microscillaceae, Sphingobacteriales, SBR1031, Chlamydiales, Phycisphaerae, Caldilineales, Rhodobacterales, and Verrucomicrobiales. The present study suggested that V. natans can be a potential species to remove multiple PFAAs in aquatic environments, and further providing insights into the PFAAs' remediation.

Occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of perfluoroalkyl acids in drinking water sources from the lower Yangtze River

The occurrence, spatial distribution, potential sources, and risk assessment of 14 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), including 11 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and 3 perfluoroalkyl sulfonates acids, were investigated in 21 drinking water sources from the lower Yangtze River in November 2019. The total PFAAs (∑PFAAs) concentrations ranged from 39.3 to 220.3 ng/L, and perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctanesulfonate were predominant with average concentrations of 19.4 and 15.4 ng/L, respectively. The higher ∑PFAAs concentrations in the southern shore and downstream could be attributed to industrial development and surface runoff/tide currents, respectively. Principal component analysis-multiple linear regression revealed that the primary sources of PFAAs were fluororesin coatings/metal plating, surface runoff/textile, effluent discharge/food packaging, and leather/fabrics. Human intake risks of PFAAs were assessed by target hazard quotient (THQ), which showed that human health risks of PFAAs decreased with increasing age, excluding 13-17 years age group. Moreover, the total exposure risks of PFOA/PFOS in all sampling sites to people aged over 18 years calculated based on contribution from drinking water were noted to be at safe level. The results obtained were helpful for improving our understanding of human health risks of PFAAs, and expanding our knowledge on PFAAs in drinking water.

Perfluorinated compounds in a river basin from QingHai-Tibet Plateau: Occurrence, sources and key factors

The occurrence of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in different environmental media in the QingHai-Tibet Plateau has been limitedly investigated. In this study, the water, sediments, soils and agricultural product samples were collected in the Huangshui River basin, and contents of the PFCs and values of water parameters were determined. This study investigated dominantly regulating factors of the distribution of PFCs in the water emphatically, explored the sources and assessed potential risks of the PFCs integrally. The results showed that perfluorohexanesulfonic acid, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorooctanoic acid presented high maximum concentrations of 3207.42, 3015.96, 1941.89 and 826.4 ng L-1 in the water, respectively. There were 12 PFCs detected in crops, with the maximum concentration of 5206.86 ng g-1 for PFBA. The significantly positive correlation (p < 0.05) was observed between the concentrations of PFBA in crops and that in adjacent rivers, indicating that the irrigation most likely contributed to the accumulation of PFBA in the studied crops. The occurrence of the PFCs in the water during the dry season was dominantly regulated by fluorescent dissolved organic matters via the hydrophobic interaction, while it was primarily regulated by the total nitrogen and electrical conductivity via electrostatic interaction during the wet season. The PFCs in the water were mainly from the wastewater discharged from wastewater treatment plants and carpet factories, while the resuspension of the PFCs in sediments was also an important contribution especially in wet season. The PFCs in the river has posed sustained risk to the public health, especially children.

Ship navigation disturbance alters multiphase distribution of perfluoroalkyl acids and increases their ecological risk in waterways

As a global persistent organic pollutant, perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have aroused great public concern. However, little is known regarding the effect of ship navigation disturbance on the transport and fate of PFAAs in inland waterways developed regions. In the present study, overlying water, pore water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment were collected from waterways (WWs), non-navigable channels (NCs), and ports (PTs) in Taihu Lake Basin. The results revealed that the total concentrations of PFAAs (ΣPFAAs) in WWs, NCs, and PTs varied considerably in different media. In overlying water, the mean ΣPFAAs in WWs were the highest, while those of NCs were relatively higher in the remaining three media. A comparison of PFAA distribution coefficients revealed that the values in NCs were generally higher than those of WWs and PTs, suggesting the critical role of ship navigation in PFAA transport. Furthermore, a structural equation model was applied to estimate direct and indirect effects of environmental factors on PFAA partitioning behavior. The results revealed that ship traffic volume (STV) exerted indirect effects on PFAA distribution between solid and dissolved phases by influencing dissolved oxygen, total suspended solid concentration, clay and sand contents, and median diameter. PFAAs were more readily to be released into overlying water from pore water than in sediment, and the ΣPFAAs carried per gram of SPM decreased with an increase in STV. Ecological risk assessment and Monte Carlo simulation results revealed that ship navigation could exert adverse effects on aquatic organisms, making the average probability of RQ_mix values to exceed corresponding risk values in WWs, which were 1.3-2-fold higher than in NCs. The present study provides crucial information for simulating the environmental behaviors of PFAAs under the influence of ship navigation and is significant for the integration of inland water transport development and aquatic environmental protection.

Addressing Urgent Questions for PFAS in the 21st Century

Despite decades of research on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), fundamental obstacles remain to addressing worldwide contamination by these chemicals and their associated impacts on environmental quality and health. Here, we propose six urgent questions relevant to science, technology, and policy that must be tackled to address the "PFAS problem": (1) What are the global production volumes of PFAS, and where are PFAS used? (2) Where are the unknown PFAS hotspots in the environment? (3) How can we make measuring PFAS globally accessible? (4) How can we safely manage PFAS-containing waste? (5) How do we understand and describe the health effects of PFAS exposure? (6) Who pays the costs of PFAS contamination? The importance of each question and barriers to progress are briefly described, and several potential paths forward are proposed. Given the diversity of PFAS and their uses, the extreme persistence of most PFAS, the striking ongoing lack of fundamental information, and the inequity of the health and environmental impacts from PFAS contamination, there is a need for scientific and regulatory communities to work together, with cooperation from PFAS-related industries, to fill in critical data gaps and protect human health and the environment.

Removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from aqueous solution by amino-functionalized graphene oxide (AGO) aerogels: Influencing factors, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging organic pollutant that has become ubiquitous in waterways and is difficult to be removed from wastewater using traditional treatment methods. In this study, amino-functionalized graphene oxide (AGO) aerogels were prepared as a potential remediation tool for water contaminated by PFOA. The structure of the prepared absorbent material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. The use of various adsorption times, temperatures, solution pH, and absorbent amount were investigated to determine optimum conditions for PFOA adsorption. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of the absorbent were analyzed as well. AGO aerogels exhibited a high adsorption capacity of PFOA (1575 mg∙g^-1) and high removal efficiency (99.95%) in a solution containing 10 mg PFOA L^-1, likely due to the interconnected porous microstructures and amino groups of the AGO aerogels. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm of PFOA were well-fitted using pseudo-second-order and the Freundlich modelling. The adsorption mechanism of PFOA onto AGO aerogels followed spontaneous, exothermic, and physical processes. This study shows the potential of this material to remove PFOA from PFOA-contaminated waters effectively by providing insight into the understanding of the adsorption mechanisms of PFOA onto AGO aerogels.

Agricultural activities impact on soil and sediment fluorine and perfluorinated compounds in an endemic fluorosis area

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are organo-fluorine compounds which have been identified at significant levels in soils due to their widespread usage in industrial and commercial applications. However, few studies are available regarding the occurrence of PFCs in the environment of endemic fluorosis areas. To address the issue, soils collected from an endemic fluorosis area of southwestern China were analyzed for the distribution of fluorine and 21 kinds of PFCs. The average water-soluble fluorine concentration in cultivated soil (4.87 mg kg^-1) was significantly higher than that in uncultivated soil (3.15 mg kg^-1), which mainly ascribed to the utilization of fluorine-enriched fertilizers during agricultural practices. Concentrations of ΣPFCs in all soils ranged from 0.508 to 6.83 ng g^-1, with an average of 2.81 ng g^-1, dominated by perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Highest ΣPFCs was found in the soil samples collected from cropland with intensive agricultural activities. Long-chain PFCs, including four perfluoroalkylcarboxylic acids (PFCAs, C ≥ 8) and one perfluoroalkylsulfonic acids (PFSAs) (perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), C8), exhibited high levels in soils, probably due to their higher hydrophobicity and lower water-solubility than short-chain PFCs. While in sediments, short-chain PFCAs were the dominant compounds. Based on correlation analysis, the relationship between total fluorine and PFCs was insignificant, and soil organic matter was a relevant factor affecting PFCs distribution in soils. This study is expected to present a more comprehensive information about fluorine contamination under the influence of agricultural activities in an endemic fluorosis area.

Removal of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in constructed wetlands: Considerable contributions of submerged macrophytes and the microbial community

The broad application of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) has attracted global concern regarding their adverse environmental effects. The possible removal processes of PFAAs in constructed wetlands were excavated and quantified using two typical submerged macrophytes (rooted Potamogeton wrightii and rootless Ceratophyllum demersum). Our results showed that 33.59-88.99% of PFAAs could be removed via not only sediment sorption or phytoextraction but also by the bioaccumulation of microbiota. The sediment acts as a vital sink for PFAAs, preloading 23.51-50.09% and 16.65-52.18% of PFAAs in treatments with P. wrightii (Pw1) and C. demersum (Cd1), respectively. C. demersum showed a better capacity to accumulate PFAAs (0.91-32.03%) than P. wrightii (<10%). Considerable PFAAs were observed to be distributed in microbes, underlining the non-negligible role of microbiota in bioaccumulating PFAAs. The contributions of planktonic microbes, biofilm microbes, and extracellular polymeric substances in biofilms were 0.39-20.96%, 0.03-7.95%, and 0.39-14.15% in Pw1 and 0.23-15.68%, 0.01-15.68%, and 0.53-26.77% in Cd1, respectively. The adsorption/uptake was significantly correlated with the perfluoroalkyl chain length (p<0.05), except for the uptake of biofilms in C. demersum. Furthermore, PFAAs and submerged macrophytes could decrease the richness of microbiota but increase the relative abundance of some strains in Betaproteobacteriales, Sphingomonadales, and Cytophagales. Our results were helpful for understanding the removal processes of PFAAs in constructed wetlands and their linkages with PFAA properties, thus further providing insight into the management and removal of emerging organic contaminants.

Distribution behavior and risk assessment of emerging perfluoroalkyl acids in multiple environmental media at Luoma Lake, East China

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in various environments. This has caused great public concern, particularly in the shallow freshwater lake region, where the lake, rivers, and estuaries form a highly interconnected continuum. However, little is known about the environmental behaviors of PFAAs in the continuum. For the first time, a high-resolution monitoring framework covering the river-estuary-lake continuum of Luoma Lake was built, and the concentrations, sources, and environmental fates of PFAAs were identified and analyzed. The results revealed that the total concentration of PFAAs was at a moderate level in the water and at a high level in the sediment compared to global levels respectively. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was the most abundant PFAA in the continuum. In particular, the ∑PFAA concentration in the particle phase was much higher than that in the sediment phase. Distinct spatial heterogeneities were observed in the behaviors of distribution and the multiphase fate of PFAAs in the continuum, mainly driven by the turbulent mixing during transport, dilution of lake water, and spatial differences of hydrodynamic features and sedimentary properties among the sub-regions. Interestingly, the pH of the sediment and water had significant effects on the water-sediment portioning of PFAAs in contrasting ways. Furthermore, based on the composition of the sediments, four possible migration paths for PFAAs were deduced and the main sources of PFAAs were identified as sewage, domestic, and industrial effluents using the positive matrix factorization model. During the human health assessment, no risk was found under the median exposure scenario; however, under the high exposure scenario, PFAAs posed uncertain risks to human health, which cannot be ignored. This study provides basic information for simulating the fate and transport of PFAAs in the continuum and is significant for developing cost-effective control and remediation strategies in the near future.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Chinese and German river water - Point source- and country-specific fingerprints including unknown precursors

This study aimed at comparing source-specific fingerprints of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in river water from China and Germany, selected as countries with different histories of PFAS production. Samples were collected from up- and downstream of seven suspected point sources in autumn 2018. Amongst the 29 analyzed legacy and emerging PFASs, 24 were detected, with a sum ranging from 2.7 ng/L (Alz River) to 420,000 ng/L (Xiaoqing River). While mass flow estimates for the Xiaoqing River and Yangtze River (mean: 20 and 43 t/y, respectively) indicated ongoing high emissions of the legacy compound PFOA in China, its ether-based replacements HFPO-DA and DONA showed the highest contribution downstream of a German fluoropolymer manufacturing site (50% and 40% of ΣPFASs measured, respectively). In river water impacted by manufacturing sites for pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediates, the short-chain compound PFBS was the most prevalent substance in both countries. The German Ruhr River, receiving discharges from the electroplating industry, was characterized by the PFOS replacement 6:2 FTSA. Isomer profiling revealed a higher proportion of branched isomers in the Chinese Xi River and Xiaoqing River than in other rivers. This points to different synthesis routes and underlines the importance of differentiating between linear and branched isomers in risks assessments. Upon oxidative conversion in the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay, the increase of the short-chain compound PFBA was higher in German samples than in Chinese samples (88 ± 30% versus 12 ± 14%), suggesting the presence of a higher proportion of unknown precursors to PFBA in the German environment. Amongst the ether-based replacements, DONA and 6:2 Cl-PFESA were fully or partially degraded to non-targeted oxidation products, whereas HFPO-DA showed no degradation. This indicates that the inclusion of ether-based PFASs and their oxidation products in the TOP assay can help in capturing a larger amount of the unknown PFAS fraction.

Association between exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances and metabolic syndrome and related outcomes among older residents living near a Science Park in Taiwan

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are an emerging class of artificial environmental chemicals that have multiple potentially harmful effects on health. The largest Science Park in Taiwan discharges wastewater containing PFASs into the Keya River, and a high concentration of PFASs has been found in this river and its aquatic creatures. We conducted a cross-sectional study from 2016 to 2017 of 397 subjects aged 55-75 years living near the river and evaluated the association of PFASs with metabolic syndrome and related outcomes. The results indicated that perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) levels were positively associated with serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (P for trend = 0.03) and that perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and PFOS levels were positively correlated with uric acid levels (P for trend = 0.03 and 0.03). Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) levels were negatively associated with serum triglyceride levels (P for trend = 0.014 and < 0.01). After excluding lipid-lowering drug users, the association between certain PFAS levels and the LDL level was significantly enhanced, but the downward trends of serum triglyceride levels were weakened. When stratified by sex, PFNA (P for trend <0.01), perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS) (P for trend <0.01), and PFOS (P for trend <0.01) showed positive associations with the uric acid level only among males. In conclusion, our results showed that associations were consistently null between PFASs and metabolic syndrome. PFAS levels were associated with serum lipids, and lipid-lowering drugs may interfere with this relationship. Certain PFASs were found to be positively associated with uric acid levels, especially in males. Further studies are warranted to clarify the causal relationships.
