Selenium volatilization in plants, microalgae, and microorganisms

The augmented prevalence of Se (Se) pollution can be attributed to various human activities, such as mining, coal combustion, oil extraction and refining, and agricultural irrigation. Although Se is vital for animals, humans, and microorganisms, excessive concentrations of this element can give rise to potential hazards. Consequently, numerous approaches have been devised to mitigate Se pollution, encompassing physicochemical techniques and bioremediation. The recognition of Se volatilization as a potential strategy for mitigating Se pollution in contaminated environments is underscored in this review. This study delves into the volatilization mechanisms in various organisms, including plants, microalgae, and microorganisms. By assessing the efficacy of Se removal and identifying the rate-limiting steps associated with volatilization, this paper provides insightful recommendations for Se mitigation. Constructed wetlands are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative in the treatment of Se volatilization. The fate, behavior, bioavailability, and toxicity of Se within complex environmental systems are comprehensively reviewed. This knowledge forms the basis for developing management plans that aimed at mitigating Se contamination in wetlands and protecting the associated ecosystems.

Treatment and remediation of metal-contaminated water and groundwater in mining areas by biological sulfidogenic processes: A review

Heavy metal pollution in the mining areas leads to serious environmental problems. The biological sulfidogenic process (BSP) mediated by sulfidogenic bacteria has been considered an attractive technology for the treatment and remediation of metal-contaminated water and groundwater. Notwithstanding, BSP driven by different sulfidogenic bacteria could affect the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the treatment performance in practical applications, such as the microbial intolerance of pH and metal ions, the formation of toxic byproducts, and the consumption of organic electron donors. Sulfur-reducing bacteria (S⁰RB)-driven BSP has been demonstrated to be a promising alternative to the commonly used sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-driven BSP for treating metal-contaminated wastewater and groundwater, due to the cost-saving in chemical addition, the high efficiency in sulfide production and metal removal efficiency. Although the S⁰RB-driven BSP has been developed and applied for decades, the present review works mainly focus on the developments in SRB-driven BSP for the treatment and remediation of metal-contaminated wastewater and groundwater. Accordingly, a comprehensive review for metal-contaminated wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation should be provided with the incorporation of the SRB- and S⁰RB-driven BSP. To identify the bottlenecks and to improve BSP performance, this paper reviews sulfidogenic bacteria presenting in metal-contaminated water and groundwater; highlight the critical factors for the metabolism of sulfidogenic bacteria during BSP; the ecological roles of sulfidogenic bacteria and the mechanisms of metal removal by sulfidogenic bacteria; and the application of the present sulfidogenic systems and their drawbacks. Accordingly, the research knowledge gaps, current process limitations, and future prospects were provided for improving the performance of BSP in the treatment and remediation of metal-contaminated wastewater and groundwater in mining areas.

Treatment technologies for selenium contaminated water: A critical review

Selenium is an indispensable trace element for humans and other organisms; however, excessive selenium in water can jeopardize the aquatic environment. Investigations on the biogeochemical cycle of selenium have shown that anthropogenic activities such as mining, refinery, and coal combustion mainly contribute to aquatic selenium pollution, imposing tremendous risks on ecosystems and human beings. Various technologies thus have been developed recently to treat selenium contaminated water to reduce its environmental impacts. This work provides a critical review on the applications, characteristics, and latest developments of current treatment technologies for selenium polluted water. It first outlines the present status of the characteristics, sources, and toxicity of selenium in water. Selenium treatment technologies are then classified into three categories: 1) physicochemical separation including membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation/precipitation, 2) redox decontamination including chemical reduction and catalysis, and 3) biological transformation including microbial treatment and constructed wetland. Details of these methods including their overall efficiencies, applicability, advantages and drawbacks, and latest developments are systematically analyzed and compared. Although all these methods are promising in treating selenium in water, further studies are still needed to develop sustainable strategies based on existing and new technologies. Perspectives on future research directions are laid out at the end.

Denitrification performance of nitrate-dependent ferrous (Fe2+) oxidizing Aquabacterium sp. XL4: Adsorption mechanisms of bio-precipitation of phenol and estradiol

In this study, a nitrate-dependent ferrous (Fe²⁺) oxidizing strain under anaerobic conditions was selected and identified as XL4, which belongs to Aquabacterium. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the growth conditions of strain XL4, and the nitrate removal efficiency of strain XL4 (with 10% inoculation dosage, v/v) could reach 91.41% under the conditions of 30.34 ℃, pH of 6.91, and Fe²⁺ concentration of 19.69 mg L^-1. The results of Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectra (EEM) revealed that the intensity of soluble microbial products (SMP), aromatic proteins and the fulvic-like materials were obvious difference under different Fe²⁺ concentration, pH, and temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data confirmed that the main components of bio-precipitation were Fe₃O₄ and FeO(OH), which were believed to be responsible for the adsorption of phenol and estradiol. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of bio-precipitation for phenol and estradiol under the optimal conditions were 192.6 and 65.4 mg g^-1, respectively. On the other hand, the adsorption process of phenol and estradiol by bio-precipitation confirmed to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model, which shows that the adsorption process is chemical adsorption and occurs on the uniform surface.

Selenite capture by MIL-101 (Fe) through FeOSe bonds at free coordination Fe sites

Selective immobilization of SeO₃^2- is highly desired for the remediation of Se-contaminated water. Thus, the irreversible sorption of SeO₃^2- ions by adsorbents through unique coordination bonds with high affinity is needed. Herein, we demonstrated that Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) (Fe-MIL-101) with free coordination sites (FCSs) enabled selective and irreversible capture of SeO₃^2- ions from aqueous solution with fast kinetics and a high uptake capacity of 183.7 mg∙g^-1, owing to large MOF apertures and substantial numbers of FCSs as capture sites through forming Fe-O-Se bonds. Meanwhile, Fe-MIL-101 maintained excellent performance in a broad pH range (4-11) and high selectivity for SeO₃^2- ions in the presence of excessive competitive anions (e.g., CO₃^2-, PO₄^3-). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and Mössbauer fittings confirmed that the capture on Fe-MIL-101 was through the Fe-O-Se coordination bonds between FCSs and SeO₃^2-. Moreover, Fe-MIL-101 could effectively remove SeO₃^2- in simulated natural water and sewage by overcoming the influence of co-existing ions and organic matters. This study highlights new opportunities for the design of MOF-based materials for removing toxic and radioactive anions with irreversibility and high selectivity from natural and waste water.
