Graphene enhanced detoxification of wastewater rich 4-nitrophenol in multistage anaerobic reactor followed by baffled high-rate algal pond

Synergistic algal/bacterial interaction in membrane bioreactor for detoxification of 1,2-dichloroethane-rich petroleum wastewater

The study addressed the challenge of treating petroleum industry wastewater with high concentrations of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) ranging from 384 to 1654 mg/L, which poses a challenge for bacterial biodegradation and algal photodegradation. To overcome this, a collaborative approach using membrane bioreactors (MBRs) that combine algae and bacteria was employed. This synergistic method effectively mitigated the toxicity of 1,2-DCA and curbed MBR fouling. Two types of MBRs were tested: one (B-MBR) used bacterial cultures and the other (AB-MBR) incorporated a mix of algal and bacterial cultures. The AB-MBR significantly contributed to 1,2-DCA removal, with algae accounting for over 20% and bacteria for approximately 49.5% of the dechlorination process. 1,2-DCA metabolites, including 2-chloroethanol, 2-chloro-acetaldehyde, 2-chloroacetic acid, and acetic acid, were partially consumed as carbon sources by algae. Operational efficiency peaked at a 12-hour hydraulic retention time (HRT) in AB-MBR, enhancing enzyme activities crucial for 1,2-DCA degradation such as dehydrogenase (DH), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). The microbial diversity in AB-MBR surpassed that in B-MBR, with a notable increase in Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Planctomycetota, and Verrucomicrobiota. Furthermore, AB-MBR showed a significant rise in the dominance of 1,2-DCA-degrading genus such as Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter. Additionally, algal-degrading phyla (e.g., Nematoda, Rotifera, and Streptophyta) were more prevalent in AB-MBR, substantially reducing the issue of membrane fouling.

Influences of Mg-activation on sugarcane bagasse biochar characteristics and its PNP removing potentials from contaminated water

Biochar as a substitute eco-friendly and low-cost adsorbent is introduced for removing p-nitrophenol (PNP) one of the most important chemical contaminant that recognized as the main metabolite in many pesticides and an intermediate compound in many industries. Physicochemical characteristics of sugarcane bagasse biochar (SCBB) and its Mg-activation (ASCBB) generated at 500 °C for 30 min were investigate. Batch kinetic experiment was conducted (200 mg L-1 PNP) to evaluate sorption efficiency of both tested biochars. To study the reaction behavior of PNP adsorption on ASCBB, solution pH and isotherm experiment of different concentrations and dosages were as investigated. The results show that ASCBB had a higher biochar yield, ash content, pH, molar ratios (H/C and O/C), surface area, pore volume, mean pore diameter, and specific and thick wall structure than SCBB. The efficiency of ASCBB to remove PNP was higher than SCBB which reached 51.98% in the first 1 min., and pH 7 achieved the optimum adsorption. Pseudo-second-order model examination exhibited well fitted to explain the adsorption results depending on R2 value (1.00). The adsorption isotherm results were well described by the Elovich and Freundlich models depending on the R2, qm and n values, which means the formation of a multilayer of PNP on the ASCBB surface through the chemisorption reaction. The calculated qm (144.93 mg g-1) of 1g L-1 was relatively close with experimental value (142.03 mg g-1). The PNP adsorption mechanism on both biochar types was electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π stacking interactions, which were confirmed by studying the surface reactions before and after adsorption. Overall, the current study provided a successful waste biomass-derived biochar as a conducive alternative eco-sorbent to eliminate p-nitrophenol from wastewater.

Effect of solar and artificial lighting on microalgae cultivation and treatment of liquid digestate

A comparative study was carried out to assess the effect of two light sources on microalgae cultivation and the treatment of liquid digestate. The R1 photobioreactor operated with LED lightning allowed to achieve moderate nutrient removal rates whereas soluble COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) was reduced in 90%. After switching this reactor into sunlight, the removal rate of phosphates increased to 66%. However, the greatest removal rate of both nutrients and sCOD of up to 93% was observed in the R2 photobioreactor operated only under sunlight. Microglena sp. was the dominant algae growing in the R1 reactor, and the main bacteria families detected were Chitinophagaceae, Sphingomonadaceae and Xanthobacteraceae. In contrast, Tetradesmus obliquus dominated in the R2 reactor and Rhodanobacteraceae, Chitinophagaceae and A4b were predominant bacteria in this run. Furthermore, much greater biomass productivity as well as overall biomass density was observed in the R2 photobioreactor cultivated exclusively with solar lightning.

Bioelectrochemical system for enhancing anaerobic digestion of pharmaceutical-containing domestic wastewater

The unprecedented recent expansion in usage of paracetamol (AAP) has increased the need for suitable wastewater treatment technology. Furthermore, direct interspecies electron transfer promotion (DIET) offers simple and efficient approach for enhancing anaerobic digestion (AD). In this work, using AAP-containing domestic wastewater as feed, control AD reactor (RC) was operated, besides three DIET-promoted AD reactors (REV, RMC and REVMC, referring to electrical voltage "EV"-applied, nFe3O4-multiwall carbon nanotube (MCNT)-supplemented, and "EV applied + MCNT supplemented" reactor, respectively). Maximal treatable organic loading rates by RC, REV, RMC and REVMC were 3.9, 3.9, 7.8 and 15.6 g COD/L/d, corresponding to AAP loading rate of 26, 78, 156 and 312 μg/L/d, respectively. Methane production rate generated by RC, REV, RMC and REVMC reached 0.80 ± 0.01, 0.86 ± 0.04, 1.40 ± 0.07, and 3.01 ± 0.17 L/L/d, respectively. AAP expectedly followed hydroquinone degradation pathway, causing AD failure by acetate accumulation. However, this performance deterioration could be mitigated by DIET-promoted microbes with higher methanogenic activity and advanced electric conductivity. Economic evaluation revealed the favourability of MCNT addition over EV application, since payback periods for RC, REV, RMC and REVMC were 6.2, 7.7, 4.2 and 5.0 yr, respectively.

A review on algae biosorption for the removal of hazardous pollutants from wastewater: Limiting factors, prospects and recommendations

Heavy metals, dyes and pharmaceutical pollutants in water environment are considered as serious threat to the human and animal health globally. Rapid development of industrialization and agricultural activities are the major source for eliminating the toxic pollutants into the aquatic environment. Several conventional treatment methods have been suggested for the removal of emerging contaminants from wastewater. Algal biosorption, among other strategies and techniques, is demonstrating to be a limited technical remedy that is more focused and inherently more efficient and helps remove dangerous contaminants from water sources. The different environmental effects of harmful contaminants, including heavy metals, dyes, and pharmaceutical chemicals, as well as their sources, were briefly compiled in the current review. This paper provides a comprehensive definition of the future possibilities in heavy compound decomposition by using algal technology, from aggregation to numerous biosorption procedures. Functionalized materials produced from algal sources were clearly proposed. This review further highlights the limiting factors of algal biosorption to eliminate the hazardous material. Finally, this study showed how the existence of algae indicates a potential, effective, affordable, and sustainable sorbent biomaterial for minimizing environmental pollution.

Early life microbiota transplantation from highly feed-efficient broiler improved weight gain by reshaping the gut microbiota in laying chicken

Starting phase of laying chicken life is the building stone for rearing and production stages. Since, fecal microbial transplantation (FMT) regulates the gut microbial diversity and affects the productive performance of the bird. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of FMT from feed-efficient broiler chicken could program the diversity of gut microbiota and growth of recipient native slow growing egg-laying chicks. For this, a total of 150 (one-day-old) Jing Hong chicks were randomly assigned into two groups, each group consisted of 5 replicates (n = 15 bird/ replicate). The control group (CON) and FMT recipient birds (FMT) fed on basal diet, the FMT group received an oral daily dose of FMT prepared from Cobb-500 chickens. The FMT performed from the 1d to 28d of age, through the experimental period, feed intake and body weight were recorded weekly. At the end of a 28-day trial, carcass traits were assessed and cecal samples were collected for microbiome assessment via 16S rRNA-based metagenomic analysis to characterize the diversity and functions of microbial communities. The data were statistically analyzed using R software. Body weight and body weight gain increased, and FCR decreased (p = 0.01) in FMT group. The relative abundance of Firmicutes and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio were increased due to FMT administration (p = 0.01). A higher relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, and Bifidobacterium were presented in the FMT group. Meanwhile, Enterococcus, Helicobacter, and Bacteroides were more abundant in the CON group (p < 0.01). Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathways for microbial functions regarding amino acid metabolism, secondary metabolites biosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, and enzyme families, cofactors, and vitamins were significantly annotated in the FMT group. Overall, FMT administration from the donor of highly feed-efficient broilers improved weight gain by reshaping a distinct gut microbiome, which may be related to the metabolism and health in the recipients laying chicks, providing new insight on the application of the FMT technique for early life programming of laying chickens.

Unraveling the metabolic shift in anaerobic digestion pathways associated with the alteration of onion skin waste concentration

Onion skin waste (OSW) is common waste in developing countries, which can cause severe environmental pollution when not properly treated. Value-added products can be chemically extracted from OSW; however, that process is not economically feasible. Alternatively, dry anaerobic digestion (DAD) of OSW is a promising approach for both energy recovery and environment protection. The main hurdles during DAD of OSW can be the hydrolysis and acidification. In batch tests, sludge digestate (SD) rich with methanogens was co-digested with different fractions of OSW for enhancing hydrolysis and raising biogas productivity. The cumulative biogas production (CBP) was 36.6 ± 0.3 mL for sole DAD of SD (100% SD) and increased up to 281.9 ± 14.1 mL for (50% SD: 50% OSW) batch. Self-delignification of OSW took place by SD addition, where the lignin removal reached 75.3 ± 10.5% for (85% SD: 15% OSW) batch. Increasing the fraction of OSW (45% SD: 55% OSW) reduced the delignification by a value of 68.8%, where initial lignin concentration was 9.48 ± 1.6% in dry weight. Lignin breaking down resulted a high fraction of phenolic compounds (345.6 ± 58.8 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight) in the fermentation medium, causing CBP drop (219.0 ± 28.5 mL). The presence of elements (K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, S and P) in OSW improved the enzymatic activity, facilitated phenolic compounds degradation, shifted the metabolism towards acetate fermentation pathway, and raised biogas productivity. Acidogenesis was less affected by phenolic compounds than methanogenesis, causing higher H₂ contents and lower CH₄ contents, at batches with high share of OSW.

Recent advances in biological removal of nitroaromatics from wastewater

Various nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) released into the environment cause potential threats to humans and animals. Biological treatment is valued for cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and availability when treating wastewater containing NACs. Considering the significance and wide use of NACs, this review focuses on recent advances in biological treatment systems for NACs removal from wastewater. Meanwhile, factors affecting biodegradation and methods to enhance removal efficiency of NACs are discussed. The selection of biological treatment system needs to consider NACs loading and cost, and its performance is affected by configuration and operation strategy. Generally, sequential anaerobic-aerobic biological treatment systems perform better in mineralizing NACs and removing co-pollutants. Future research on mechanism exploration of NACs biotransformation and performance optimization will facilitate the large-scale application of biological treatment systems.

Sustainable microalgal biomass valorization to bioenergy: Key challenges and future perspectives

The global trend is shifting toward circular economy systems. It is a sustainable environmental approach that sustains economic growth from the use of resources while minimizing environmental impacts. The multiple industrial use of microalgal biomass has received great attention due to its high content of essential nutrients and elements. Nevertheless, low biomass productivity, unbalanced carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, resistant cellular constituents, and the high cost of microalgal harvesting represent the major obstacles for valorization of algal biomass. In recent years, microalgae biomass has been a candidate as a potential feedstock for different bioenergy generation processes with simultaneous treating wastewater and CO₂ capture. An overview of the appealing features and needed advancements is urgently essential for microalgae-derived bioenergy generation. The present review provides a timely outlook and evaluation of biomethane production from microalgal biomass and related challenges. Moreover, the biogas recovery potential from microalgal biomass through different pretreatments and synergistic anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) with other biowastes are evaluated. In addition, the removal of micropollutants and heavy metals by microalgal cells via adsorption and bioaccumulation in their biomass is discussed. Herein, a comprehensive review is presented about a successive high-throughput for anaerobic digestion (AD) of the microalgal biomass in order to achieve for sustainable energy source. Lastly, the valorization of the digestate from AD of microalgae for agricultural reuse is highlighted.
