A novel cationic graphene modified cyclodextrin adsorbent with enhanced removal performance of organic micropollutants and high antibacterial activity

Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions: Progress of adsorbents development and their effectiveness

Increased levels of heavy metals (HMs) in aquatic environments poses serious health and ecological concerns. Hence, several approaches have been proposed to eliminate/reduce the levels of HMs before the discharge/reuse of HMs-contaminated waters. Adsorption is one of the most attractive processes for water decontamination; however, the efficiency of this process greatly depends on the choice of adsorbent. Therefore, the key aim of this article is to review the progress in the development and application of different classes of conventional and emerging adsorbents for the abatement of HMs from contaminated waters. Adsorbents that are based on activated carbon, natural materials, microbial, clay minerals, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI), graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are critically reviewed, with more emphasis on the last four adsorbents and their nanocomposites since they have the potential to significantly boost the HMs removal efficiency from contaminated waters. Furthermore, the optimal process conditions to achieve efficient performance are discussed. Additionally, adsorption isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and effects of varying adsorption process parameters have been introduced. Moreover, heavy metal removal driven by other processes such as oxidation, reduction, and precipitation that might concurrently occur in parallel with adsorption have been reviewed. The application of adsorption for the treatment of real wastewater has been also reviewed. Finally, challenges, limitations and potential areas for improvements in the adsorptive removal of HMs from contaminated waters are identified and discussed. Thus, this article serves as a comprehensive reference for the recent developments in the field of adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The proposed future research work at the end of this review could help in addressing some of the key limitations facing this technology, and create a platform for boosting the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of heavy metals.

Synergistic disinfection effects and reduction of disinfection by-products in water treatment using magnetic quaternized cyclodextrin polymer combined with chorine disinfection process

Disinfection is vital in ensuring water safety. However, the traditional chlorine disinfection process is prone to producing toxic and harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). The combination of quaternary ammonium polymer and the chlorine disinfection process can solve this shortcoming. Currently, research on the control of DBPs through the combined process is not systematic and the control effect between reducing the dosage of disinfectants and DBPs remains to be studied. Quaternized cyclodextrin polymers have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent adsorption and antibacterial properties, but their synergistic effect with chlorine disinfection is still unclear. In this study, a magnetic quaternized cyclodextrin polymer (MQCDP) is synthesized in an ionic liquid green system, and a combined process of MQCDP treatment and chlorine disinfection is established. The disinfection performance of the combined process on the actual water body along with its reducing effect on the amount of chlorine disinfectant as well as the trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) DBPs are explored. MQCDP has a porous structure with a specific surface area of 825 m2 g-1 and is easily magnetically separated. MQCDP can remove most of the natural organic matter (UV254 absorbance decreased by 97 %) in the water at the dosage of 1 g L-1 and kill bacteria with a sterilization rate of 85 %. Compared with disinfection using chlorine alone, the combined process has higher disinfection efficiency and significantly reduces the amount of disinfectant used. A concentration of 5 mg/L of NaClO was needed to meet the standard by chlorine disinfectant alone, while only 2 mg/L of NaClO can meet the standard for the combined process, indicating 60 % of the chlorine demand was reduced. More importantly, the combined process can significantly reduce the generation potential of DBPs. When 10 mg/L of NaClO is added, the THMs and HAAs generated by the combined process decreased by 65 % and 34 %, respectively, compared with the levels produced by single chlorine disinfection. The combined process can reduce the dosage of chlorine disinfectant and MQCDP can adsorb humic acid DBP precursors in raw water, thus lowering the generation of DBPs during disinfection. In summary, MQCDP has excellent separation and antibacterial ability, and its synergistic effects combined with the chlorine disinfection process are of great significance for controlling the amount of disinfectant and the formation potential of DBPs, which has potential applications in actual water treatment.

Citric acid cross-linked β-cyclodextrins: A review of preparation and environmental/biomedical application

The β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) are biocompatible macrocyclic candidates for the preparation of various composites with enhanced functions. While nontoxic and biodegradable citric acid (CA) is the favorite crosslinking agent for fabricating hierarchical advanced structures. The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on CA can serve as "structural bridges" and enhance the solubility of β-CD. Leading to the construction of CA cross-linked β-CD with marvelous complicated structures and targeted functions. Here, we directly categorized the grafted composite materials into two main types such as organic and inorganic materials. Particularly, some representative composite materials are listed and analyzed in detail according to their preparation, advantages of unique characteristics, as well as the possible applications in environmental and biomedical fields such as adsorption of pollutants, sensors, and biomedical applications.

Molecular level investigation of interactions between pharmaceuticals and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized adsorption sites for removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from water

This study describes a novel application of the use of molecular modeling tools for investigating the adsorption of organic micropollutants (OMPs) from water by nanocomposites. The partitioning of pharmaceuticals onto β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized adsorbents was investigated at the molecular level to explore the atomistic interactions of pharmaceutical contaminants in water systems with β-CD and to provide insight into possible approaches for removal of pharmaceuticals from water. Molecular electrostatic surface potential mapping of β-CD derivatives was employed to examine the impact of substitution degree of β-CD and type of grafting agent on host-guest complexation. The stability of the complexes of selected pharmaceuticals and β-CD derivatives were assessed via molecular dynamics simulations to evaluate competitive adsorption between organic micropollutants (OMPs) and between OMPs and fulvic acid, a representative natural organic material (NOM) component found in water systems. Molecular electrostatic surface potential maps showed that grafting agents with aromatic and amine functional groups were found to provide attractive interactions for negatively charged OMPs. In addition, optimization of substitution degree of β-CD is necessary to enhance adsorption of target OMPs. Furthermore, it was found that aromatic ring bearing grafting agents can provide additional electrostatic attractions by π-π interactions with the aromatic ring of the OMPs. The impact of common water quality characteristics on adsorption was assessed and it was revealed that the effect of pH and calcium on adsorption depends on the ionizable functional groups present on the grafting agent. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that adsorption of target OMPs does not solely depend on hydrophobicity but is affected by electrostatic interactions. The simulations revealed that fulvic acid which is commonly present in environmental waters can be a competitor with ibuprofen for the β-CD cavity. Ultimately, this study showed that molecular level simulation can be effectively employed to investigate adsorption of OMPs by β-CD functionalized adsorbents and could be employed to enhance their design and subsequent environmental applications.

Sulfonated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-cyclodextrin hybrid polymers for efficient removal of micropollutants from water

Herein, β-cyclodextrin-containing hybrid polymers (P1, P2 and P3) were prepared through crosslinking partially benzylated β-cyclodextrin (PBCD) by octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS). P1 stood out in screening studies and the residual hydroxyl groups of PBCD was sulfonate-functionalized. The obtained P1-SO₃Na showed greatly enhanced adsorption towards cationic MPs and maintained the excellent adsorption performance towards neutral MPs. The rate constants (k₂) of cationic MPs upon P1-SO₃Na were 9.8-34.8 times larger than those upon P1. The equilibrium uptakes of the neutral and cationic MPs upon P1-SO₃Na were above 94.5 %. Meanwhile, P1-SO₃Na demonstrated appreciable adsorption capacities, excellent selectivity, effective adsorption of mixed MPs at environmental levels and good reusability. These results confirmed the great potential of P1-SO₃Na as effective adsorbent to remove MPs from water.

Competition-Based Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Dually Cross-Linked Supramolecular Hydrogel for Colorimetric and Fluorescent Dual-Mode Sensing of Bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the most abundantly produced endocrine disrupting chemicals, is widely used in everyday plastic products and thus must be monitored. Multimode sensing platforms are able to combine the advantages of different strategies while solving the issues of inaccurate test results of single signal sensing. However, the exploration in this field is limited due to the compromise of sensing conditions and inevitable mutual interferences of different systems. Herein, we constructed a two-dimensional photonic crystal dually cross-linked supramolecular hydrogel (2DPCDCSH) by utilizing a host-guest pair of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and tert-butyl (t-Bu) as the second cross-linking for colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode sensing of BPA. Based on the fact that BPA can act as a competitive guest to break the host-guest interaction between β-CD and t-Bu, the cross-linking density decreased and an expansion-induced structural color change occurred. Sensitive and selective BPA detection can be easily achieved by measuring the Debye diffraction ring diameter or observing the color change of 2DPC with a detection limit of 1 μg mL^-1. Moreover, the formation of the β-CD/BPA complex gave a significant enhancement of the intrinsic fluorescence of BPA, obtaining a detection limit of 0.001 μg mL^-1. The two sensing systems can share the same reaction condition and yield a wider dynamic response range than the single signal strategy. Overall, the proposed method presented an efficient, rapid, cost-effective, and regenerative dual-mode method for BPA analysis and shed new insights for the design of diversified sensing platforms.

Isotherm models for adsorption of heavy metals from water - A review

Adsorption is a widely used technology for removing and separating heavy metal from water, attributed to its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and high efficiency. Adsorption isotherm modeling has been used for many years to predict the adsorption equilibrium mechanism, adsorption capacity, and the inherent characteristics of the adsorption process, all of which are substantial in evaluating the performance of adsorbents. This review summarizes the development history, fundamental characteristics, and mathematical derivations of various isotherm models, along with their applicable conditions and application scenarios in heavy metal adsorption. The latest progress in applying isotherm models with a one-parameter, two-parameter, and three-parameter in heavy metal adsorption using carbon-based materials, which has gained much attention in recent years as low-cost adsorbents, is critically reviewed and discussed. Several experimental factors affecting the adsorption equilibrium, such as solution pH, temperature, ionic strength, adsorbent dose, and initial heavy metal concentration, are briefly discussed. The criteria for selecting the optimum isotherm for heavy metal adsorption are proposed by comparing various adsorption models and analyzing mathematical error functions. Finally, the relative performance of different isotherm models for heavy metal adsorption is compared, and the future research gaps are identified.

Multifunctional porous β-cyclodextrin polymer for water purification

Keeping water clean is of vital significance for human health and environmental protection. In order to remove organic micro-pollutants and natural organic substances in water bodies and kill pathogenic microorganisms simultaneously, this study synthesized a multifunctional porous β-cyclodextrin polymer with a high specific surface area by introducing quaternary ammonium groups and rigid benzene rings, respectively, which was then polymerized with crosslinking agent-4,4'-bis (chloromethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (BCMBP) in an ionic liquid system. The grafting of quaternary ammonium groups was beneficial for the removal of negative-charged humic acid (HA) and sterilization. The introduction of numerous rigid structures during benzylation and Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction could significantly improve the porosity and specific surface area of the polymer, conducive to the exposure of cyclodextrin binding sites and contaminant adsorption. By changing the proportions of quaternization and benzylation, the structure and surface properties of the polymer could be adjusted, thus further regulating the adsorption performance. Compared with activated carbon, the polymer named BQCD-BP with a huge surface area of 1133 m² g^-1 prepared under optimized conditions showed outstanding adsorption performance and sterilization ability. The pseudo-second-order kinetic constant of BQCD-BP reached 1.2058 g·mg^-1·min^-1, which was approximately 50 times greater than that of activated carbon (0.0256 g·mg^-1·min^-1) under the same experimental condition. The adsorption capacity of BQCD-BP to HA was twice as high as that to AC, and the antibacterial ability of BQCD-BP was significant, achieving 90% at the dosage of 1g L^-1. Moreover, the adsorption process was hardly affected by the hydrochemical conditions, and the polymer was easy to regenerate. In addition, the excellent adsorption and antibacterial performance of the polymer were also identified by natural water treatment. COD was almost completely removed, and the removal efficiency of TP reached 92% after contact with BQCD-BP. The sterilization rate of BQCD-BP to viable bacteria in complex water bodies reached 82%. Undoubtedly, BQCD-BP is a potential multifunctional water treatment material with reasonable design in the actual water purification.

Environmental Behavior and Remediation Methods of Roxarsone

Roxarsone (ROX) is used extensively in the broiler chicken industry, and most is excreted in poultry litter. ROX degradation produces inorganic arsenic, which causes arsenic contamination of soil and aquatic environment. Furthermore, elevated arsenic concentrations are found in livers of chickens fed ROX. Microorganisms, light, and ions are the main factors that promote ROX degradation in the environment. The adsorption of ROX on different substances and its influencing factors have also been studied extensively. Additionally, the remediation method, combining adsorption and degradation, can effectively restore ROX contamination. Based on this, the review reports the ecological hazards, discussed the transformation and adsorption of ROX in environmental systems, documents the biological response to ROX, and summarizes the remediation methods of ROX contamination. Most previous studies of ROX have been focused on identifying the mechanisms involved under theoretical conditions, but more attention should be paid to the behavior of ROX under real environmental conditions, including the fate and transport of ROX in the real environment. ROX remediation methods at real contaminated sites should also be assessed and verified. The summary of previous studies on the environmental behavior and remediation methods of ROX is helpful for further research in the future.

Adsorptive and photocatalytic remediation of hazardous organic chemical pollutants in aqueous medium: A review

The provision of clean water is still a major challenge in developing parts of the world, as emphasized by the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6), and has remained a subject of extensive research globally. Advancements in science and industry have resulted in a massive surge in the amount of industrial chemicals produced within the last few decades. Persistent and emerging organic pollutants are detected in aquatic environments, and conventional wastewater treatment plants have ineffectively handled these trace, bioaccumulative and toxic compounds. Therefore, we have conducted an extensive bibliometric analysis of different materials utilized to combat organic pollutants via adsorption and photocatalysis. The classes of pollutants, material synthesis, mechanisms of interaction, merits, and challenges were comprehensively discussed. The paper highlights the advantages of various materials used in the removal of hazardous pollutants from wastewater with activated carbon having the highest adsorption capacity. Dyes, pharmaceuticals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pesticides and other recalcitrant organic pollutants have been successfully removed at high degradation efficiencies through the photocatalytic process. The photocatalytic degradation and adsorption processes were compared by considering factors such as cost, efficiency, ease of application and reusability. This review will be good resource material for water treatment professionals/scientists, who may be interested in adsorptive and photocatalytic remediation of organic chemicals pollutants.

Optimized preparation and performance evaluation of a bifunctional chitosan-modified flocculant

In view of the diversification of pollutants in current sewage, further improving the application efficiency of water treatment agents and realizing multi-functionalization are important directions for the research of water treatment agents.
