Effects of Fe(II)-induced transformation of scorodite on arsenic solubility

Arsenic redistribution associated with Fe(II)-induced jarosite transformation in the presence of polygalacturonic acid

Jarosite exists widely in acid-sulfate soil and acid mine drainage polluted areas and acts as an important host mineral for As(V). As a metastable Fe(III)-oxyhydoxysulfate mineral, its dissolution and transformation have a significant impact on the biogeochemical cycle of As. Under reducing conditions, the trajectory and degree of abiotic Fe(II)-induced jarosite transformation may be greatly influenced by coexisting dissolved organic matter (DOM), and in turn influencing the fate of As. Here, we explored the impact of polygalacturonic acid (PGA) (0-200 mg·L-1) on As(V)-coprecipitated jarosite transformation in the presence of Fe(II) (1 mM) at pH 5.5, and investigated the repartitioning of As between aqueous and solid phase. The results demonstrated that in the system without both PGA and Fe(II), jarosite gradually dissolved, and lepidocrocite was the main transformation product by 30 d; in Fe(II)-only system, lepidocrocite appeared by 1 d and also was the mainly final product; in PGA-only systems, PGA retarded jarosite dissolution and transformation, jarosite might be directly converted into goethite; in Fe(II)-PGA systems, the presence of PGA retarded Fe(II)-induced jarosite dissolution and transformation but did not alter the pathway of mineral transformation, the final product mainly still was lepidocrocite. The retarding effect on jarosite dissolution enhanced with the increase of PGA content. The impact of PGA on Fe(II)-induced jarosite transformation mainly was related to the complexation of carboxyl groups of PGA with Fe(II). The dissolution and transformation of jarosite drove pre-incorporated As transferred into the phosphate-extractable phase, the presence of PGA retarded jarosite dissolution and maintained pre-incorporated As stable in jarosite. The released As promoted by PGA was retarded again and almost no As was released into the solution by the end of reactions in all systems. In systems with Fe(II), no As(III) was detected and As(V) was still the dominant redox species.

Mechanism and thermodynamics of scorodite formation by oxidative precipitation from arsenic-bearing solution

Arsenic pollution is a challenging environmental issue caused by arsenic-bearing wastes from nonferrous metallurgy. Oxidative precipitation via introducing O2 into an ionic Fe(II)-As(V) solution is an advanced method for arsenic immobilization. However, the underlying mechanism is still not well understood. This study proposed a mechanism for scorodite formation by oxidative precipitation, and its thermodynamics were calculated using Gaussian software. Scorodite formation was divided into three stages: precursor formation (3-90 min), oxidative conversion (90-270 min) and crystallization (270-720 min) from the variation in precipitates and solution characterization and parameters such as initial pH, arsenic concentration, and ferrous dosage. In the scorodite formation mechanism, the precursors originate from the coordination polymerization of aqueous Fe(H2O)62+ and H2AsO4-, which contributes to the oxidative conversion of coordinated polymers ([Fe(H2O)4(H2O)]nn+) to basic Fe(H2O)2AsO4 until regular octahedral crystals are formed via nucleation and growth during crystallization. The ΔrGmθ for polymerization varied from -491.96 kJ mol-1 to -33.30 kJ mol-1, and the ΔrGmθ of oxidative conversion changed from -982.16 kJ mol-1 to -224.82 kJ mol-1, demonstrating the feasibility in scorodite formation. This research is significant for understanding scorodite formation in As(V) solutions. It can provide schemes for controlling and modifying the conditions of arsenic-bearing waste immobilization in the laboratories and industries.

Structural Fe(II)-induced generation of reactive oxygen species on magnetite surface for aqueous As(III) oxidation during oxygen activation

Magnetite is a reductive Fe(II)-bearing mineral, and its reduction property is considered important for degradation of contaminants in groundwater and anaerobic subsurface environments. However, the redox condition of subsurface environments frequently changes from anaerobic to aerobic owing to natural and anthropogenic disturbances, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the interaction between Fe(II)-bearing minerals and O2. Despite this, the mechanism of ROS generation induced by magnetite under aerobic conditions is poorly understood, which may play a crucial role in As(III) oxidation. Herein, we found that magnetite could activate O2 and induce the oxidative transformation of As(III) under aerobic conditions. As(III) oxidation was attributed to the ROS generated via structural Fe(II) within the magnetite octahedra oxygenation. The electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching tests confirmed that O2•-, H2O2, and •OH were produced by magnetite. Moreover, density function theory calculations combined with experiments demonstrated that O2•- was initially formed via single electron transfer from the structural Fe(II) to the adsorbed O2; O2•- was then converted to •OH and H2O2 via a series of free radical reactions. Among them, O2•-and H2O2 were the primary ROS responsible for As(III) oxidation, accounting for approximately 52 % and 19 % of As(III) oxidation. Notably, As(III) oxidation mainly occurred on the magnetite surface, and As was immobilized further within the magnetite structure. This study provides solid evidence regarding the role of magnetite in determining the fate and transformation of As in redox-fluctuating subsurface environments.

Fe/S oxidation-coupled arsenic speciation transformation mediated by AMD enrichment culture under different pH conditions

Arsenic (As) speciation transformation in acid mine drainage (AMD) is comprehensively affected by biological and abiotic factors, such as microbially mediated Fe/S redox reactions and changes in environmental conditions (pH and oxidation-reduction potential). However, their combined impacts on arsenic speciation transformation remain poorly studied. Therefore, we explored arsenic transformation and immobilization during pyrite dissolution mediated by AMD enrichment culture under different acidic pH conditions. The results for incubation and mineralogical transformation of solid residues show that in the presence of AMD enrichment culture, pH 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 are more conducive to the formation of jarosites and ferric arsenate, which could immobilize high quantities of dissolved arsenic by adsorption and coprecipitation. The pH conditions significantly affect the initial adsorption of microbial cells to the minerals and the evolution of microbial community structure, further influencing the biodissolution of pyrite and the release and oxidation process of Fe/S. The results of Fe/S/As speciation transformation of the solid residues show that the transformation of Fe, S, and As in solution is mainly regulated by pH and potential values, which imposed significantly different effects on the formation of secondary minerals and thus arsenic oxidation and immobilization. The above results indicated that arsenic transformation is closely related to the Fe/S oxidation associated with pyrite bio-oxidation, and this correlation is critically regulated by the pH conditions of the system.

Application of dirty-acid wastewater treatment technology in non-ferrous metal smelting industry: Retrospect and prospect

Dirty-acid wastewater (DW) originating from the non-ferrous metal smelting industry is characterized by a high concentration of H2SO4 and As. During the chemical precipitation treatment, a significant volume of arsenic-containing slag is generated, leading to elevated treatment expenses. The imperative to address DW with methods that are cost-effective, highly efficient, and safe is underscored. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of three typical methods to DW treatment, encompassing technical principles, industrial application flow charts, research advancements, arsenic residual treatment, and economic considerations. Notably, the sulfide method emerges as a focal point due to its minimal production of arsenic residue and the associated lowest overall treatment costs. Moreover, in response to increasingly stringent environmental protection policies targeting new pollutants and carbon emissions reduction, the paper explores the evolving trends in DW treatment. These trends encompass rare metal and sulfuric acid recycling, cost-effective H2S production methods, and strategies for reducing, safely disposing of, and harnessing resources from arsenic residue.

Divergent repartitioning of antimony and arsenic during jarosite transformation: A comparative study under aerobic and anaerobic conditions

Jarosite is the host mineral of Sb(V) and As(V) in mining environments. However, the repartitioning of Sb and As during its transformation is poorly understood. Additionally, the mutual effect between the redistribution behavior of As and Sb during jarosite conversion remains unclear. Here, we investigated the transformation of Sb(V)-, As(V)- and Sb(V)-As(V)-jarosite at pH 5.5 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions without a reductant. The results indicated that co-precipitated Sb(V) promotes jarosite dissolution, and the final products were mainly goethite and hematite. In contrast, the co-precipitated As(V) retarded jarosite dissolution and altered the transformation pathway, mainly forming lepidocrocite, which might be attributed to the formation of As-Fe complexes on the jarosite surface. The inhibiting or promoting effect increased with the increase in co-precipitated As or Sb concentration. In the treatment with Sb(V)-As(V)-jarosite, the inhibition effect of co-precipitated As(V) on mineral dissolution was predominant, but the end-products were mainly goethite and hematite. Compared with the aerobic system, the dissolution and transformation of jarosite in treatments in the anaerobic system occurred faster, although without a reductant, which was possibly associated with the reduced CO2 content in the reaction solutions after degassing. In all treatments, the release of Sb(aq) and As(aq) into the solution was negligible during jarosite transformation. The transformation processes drove As into the surface-bound exchangeable and poorly crystalline phases, while Sb was typically redistributed in the poorly crystalline phase. During the transformation of Sb(V)-As(V)-jarosite, the co-existence of As significantly increased the proportion of Sb distributed on the solid surface and in the poorly crystalline phase. These findings are valuable for predicting the long-term fate of Sb and As in mining environments.

Hydrogeochemical and sediment parameters improve predication accuracy of arsenic-prone groundwater in random forest machine-learning models

The relative importance of groundwater geochemicals and sediment characteristics in predicting groundwater arsenic distributions was rarely documented. To figure this out, we established a random forest machine-learning model to predict groundwater arsenic distributions in the Hetao Basin, China, by using 22 variables of climate, topographic features, soil properties, sediment characteristics, groundwater geochemicals, and hydraulic gradients of 492 groundwater samples. The established model precisely captured the patchy distributions of groundwater arsenic concentrations in the basin with an AUC value of 0.84. Results suggest that Fe(II) was the most prominent variable in predicting groundwater arsenic concentrations, which supported that the enrichment of arsenic in groundwater was caused by the reductive dissolution of Fe(III) oxides. The high relative importance of SO42- indicated that sulfate reduction was also conducive to groundwater arsenic enrichment in inland basins. Nevertheless, parameters of climate variables, sediment characteristics, and soil properties showed secondly important roles in predicting groundwater arsenic concentrations. The other two models, which excluded parameters of groundwater geochemicals and/or sediment characteristics, showed much worse predictions than the model considering all variables. This highlights the importance of variables of groundwater geochemicals and sediment characteristics in improving the precision and accuracy of predicting results. Future studies should probe a method constructing the random forest predicting model with high precision based on the limited number of groundwater samples and sediment samples.

Arsenic release from microbial reduction of scorodite in the presence of electron shuttle in flooded soil

Scorodite (FeAsO₄·H₂O) is a common arsenic-bearing (As-bearing) iron mineral in near-surface environments that could immobilize or store As in a bound state. In flooded soils, microbe induced Fe(III) or As(V) reduction can increase the mobility and bioavailability of As. Additionally, humic substances can act as electron shuttles to promote this process. The dynamics of As release and diversity of putative As(V)-reducing bacteria during scorodite reduction have yet to be investigated in detail in flooded soils. Here, the microbial reductive dissolution of scorodite was conducted in an flooded soil in the presence of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS). Anaeromyxobacter, Dechloromonas, Geothrix, Geobacter, Ideonella, and Zoogloea were found to be the dominant indigenous bacteria during Fe(III) and As(V) reduction. AQDS increased the relative abundance of dominant species, but did not change the diversity and microbial community of the systems with scorodite. Among these bacteria, Geobacter exhibited the greatest increase and was the dominant Fe(III)- and As(V)-reducing bacteria during the incubation with AQDS and scorodite. AQDS promoted both Fe(III) and As(V) reduction, and over 80% of released As(V) was microbially transformed to As(III). The increases in the abundance of arrA gene and putative arrA sequences of Geobacter were higher with AQDS than without AQDS. As a result, the addition of AQDS promoted microbial Fe(III) and As(V) release and reduction from As-bearing iron minerals into the environment. These results contribute to exploration of the transformation of As from As-bearing iron minerals under anaerobic conditions, thus providing insights into the bioremediation of As-contaminated soil.

Continuous fixation of dissolved arsenite from flooded soil by cooperating ferrihydrite with Geobacter sulfurreducens

The fixed arsenic in soil is easy to be released into the aquatic environment in the form of arsenite (As(III)) with high toxicity and mobility due to the eutrophication of environment under anaerobic conditions. However, As(III) is difficult to be fixed in situ continuously by traditional methods, especially for the most efficient fixation method by iron ores. Based on that Fe(II) could promote the fixation of As(III), this study investigated the possibility that Geobacter sulfurreducens (G. sulfurreducens) cooperates with ferrihydrite to fix released As(III) from flooded soil in a glass column continuously under anaerobic conditions. During 42 days of operation of reactors that simulated the actual flooded soil environment, the concentration of released As(III) in the reactor with adding G. sulfurreducens and ferrihydrite is always lower than that in reactors with adding ferrihydrite or no treatment. Compared with reactors without treatment, the accumulated content of released As(III) (2455.0 ± 313.1 μg) decreased by 39.4% in the reactor with adding G. sulfurreducens and ferrihydrite on the last day, while that in reactors with adding ferrihydrite only decreased by 11.6%, respectively. These were caused by the cooperation of G. sulfurreducens and ferrihydrite, which increased the relative abundance of iron-reducing microorganisms to inhibit metabolisms of As-reducing microorganisms, inhibited the quick release of As(III) from solid soil, and promoted the release of iron to accelerate the formation of stable secondary ores with As. This study could provide an environmentally friendly method to fix dissolved As(III) pollutants from soil continuously.

Humic acid controls cadmium stabilization during Fe(II)-induced lepidocrocite transformation

Abiotic reduction of iron (oxyhydr)oxides by aqueous Fe(II) is one of the key processes affecting the Fe cycle in soil. Lepidocrocite (Lep) occurs naturally in anaerobic, clayey, non-calcareous soils in cooler and temperate regions; however, little is known about the impacts of co-precipitated humic acid (HA) on Fe(II)-induced Lep transformation and its consequences for heavy metal immobilization. In this study, the Fe(II)-induced phase transformation of Lep-HA co-precipitates was analyzed as a function of the C/Fe ratio, and its implications for subsequent Cd(II) concentration dynamic in dissolved and solid form was further investigated. The results revealed that secondary Fe(II)-bearing magnetite commonly formed during the Fe(II)-induced transformation of Lep, which further changed the mobility and distribution of Cd(II). The co-precipitated HA resulted in a decrease in the Fe solid phase transformation as the C/Fe ratios increased. Magnetite was found to be a secondary mineral in the 0.3C/Fe ratio Lep-HA co-precipitate, while only Lep was observed at a C/Fe ratio of 1.2 using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Based on XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Mössbauer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results, newly formed magnetite may immobilize Cd(II) through surface complexes, incorporation, or structural substitution. The presence of HA was beneficial for binding Cd(II) and affected the mineralogical transformation of Lep into magnetite, which further induced the distribution of Cd(II) into the newly formed secondary minerals. These results provide insights into the behavior of Cd(II) in response to reaction between humic matter and iron (oxyhydr)oxides in anaerobic environments.

Microwave-enhanced simultaneous immobilization of lead and arsenic in a field soil using ferrous sulfate

Remediation of soil contaminated by mixed heavy metals and metalloids has been a major challenge in the global environmental field. To address this critical issue, we tested a new technology for simultaneous immobilization of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) in a field contaminated soil using a microwave-assisted FeSO₄·7H₂O treatment process. The process was able to rapidly reduce the TCLP-based leachability of Pb from 12.74 to 0.1 mg L^-1 and As from 2.704 to 0.002 mg L^-1 (MW power = 800 W, Irradiation time = 20 min, and FeSO₄·7H₂O = 4 wt%). The effects of FeSO₄·7H₂O dosage, microwave power, and irradiation time were determined and optimized. After 365 days of curing under atmospheric conditions, the TCLP-leached concentration of Pb and As in the treated soil remained below the regulatory limits of 0.1 and 0.002 mg L^-1, respectively. The microwave irradiation promoted the formation of insoluble PbSO₄(s) and Fe₃(AsO₄)₂·8H₂O(s), resulting in the long-term stability of Pb and As in the soil. The technology offers an effective alternative for remediation of Pb- and/or As-contaminated soil and groundwater.

Mechanistic and modeling insights into the immobilization of Cd and organic carbon during abiotic transformation of ferrihydrite induced by Fe(II)

Iron (Fe) oxides and fulvic acid (FA) are the key components affecting the fate of cadmium (Cd) in soil. The presence of FA influences Fe mineral transformation, and FA may complicate phase transformation and dynamic behavior of Cd. How varying Fe minerals and FA affect Cd immobilization during the ferrihydrite transformation induced by various Fe(II) concentrations, however, is still lack of quantitative understanding. In this study, we built a model for Cd species quantification during phase transformation based on mechanistic insights obtained from batch experiments. Spectroscopic analysis showed that Fe(II) concentrations affected secondary Fe minerals formation under the condition of co-existence of Cd and FA, and ultimately changed the distribution of Cd and FA. Microscopic analysis revealed that besides surface adsorption, part of Cd was sequestrated by magnetite, whereas FA was able to diffuse into lepidocrocite defects. The model revealed that adsorbed Cd was mainly controlled by FA and ferrihydrite, and direct complexation of Cd by FA had a strong impact on the continuous change in Cd at lower Fe(II) concentration. The results contribute to an in-depth understanding of the mobility of Cd in the environment and provide a method for quantifying the dynamic behavior of heavy metals in multi-reactant systems.
