From freshwaters to bivalves: Microplastic distribution along the Saint-Lawrence river-to-sea continuum

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of microplastics in surface waters of the St. Lawrence Estuary

Development of effective prevention and mitigation strategies for marine plastic pollution requires a better understanding of the pathways and transport mechanisms of plastic waste. Yet the role of estuaries as a key interface between riverine inputs of plastic pollution and delivery to receiving marine environments remains poorly understood. This study quantified the concentration and distribution of microplastics (MPs) (50-3200 μm) in surface waters of the St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) in eastern Canada. Microplastics were identified and enumerated based on particle morphology, colour, and size class. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used on a subset of particles to identify polymers. Generalized linear models (Gamma distribution with log-link) examined the relationship between MP concentrations and oceanographic variables and anthropogenic sources. Finally, a risk assessment model, using MP concentrations and chemical hazards based on polymer types, estimated the MP pollution risk to ecosystem health. Mean surface MP concentration in the SLE was 120 ± 42 SD particles m-3; MP concentrations were highest in the fluvial section and lowest in the Northwest Gulf of St. Lawrence. However, MP concentrations exhibited high heterogeneity along the length and width of the SLE. Microplastics were elevated at stations located closer to wastewater treatment plant outflows and downstream sites with more agricultural land. Black, blue, and transparent fibers and fragments ≤250 μm were most commonly encountered. Predominant polymer types included polyethylene terephthalate, regenerated cellulose, polyethylene, and alkyds. While the overall risk to ecosystem health in the entire estuary was considered low, several stations, particularly near urban centres were at high or very high risk. This study provides new insights into the quantification and distribution of MPs and first estimates of the risk of MP pollution to ecosystem health in one of the world's largest estuaries.

Microplastic in clams: An extensive spatial assessment in south Brazil

Microplastic pollution is becoming a continuously growing environmental concern, while bivalve mollusks are particularly vulnerable due to their sessile habits and feeding through water filtration processes. Microplastic incidence in soft tissues of the clam Amarilladesma mactroides was assessed along unconsolidated substrates distributed in extensive coastal regions of southern Brazil. Influence of urbanization levels, distance to rivers and local hydrodynamics on microplastic accumulation by the clam was tested. The average concentration of microplastics was high (3.09 ± 2.11 particles.g-1), considering 16 sampled sites. Particles were mainly composed by polyamide, polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate, while were mainly smaller, fibrous and colorless. High urbanization and closer proximity to rivers insured higher contamination, which is a trend observed globally. No influence of coastal hydrodynamics was seen. Considering obtained findings, A. mactroides presents good potential to be used as a valuable tool to assess microplastic contamination in unconsolidated substrates of beach areas.

Micro and Nanoplastic Contamination and Its Effects on Freshwater Mussels Caged in an Urban Area

Plastic-based contamination has become a major cause of concern as it pervades many environments such as air, water, sediments, and soils. This study sought to examine the presence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in freshwater mussels placed at rainfall/street runoff overflows, downstream (15 km) of the city centre of Montréal, and 8 km downstream of a municipal effluent dispersion plume. MPs and NPs were determined using flow cytometry and size exclusion chromatography using fluorescence detection. Following 3 months of exposure during the summer season, mussels contained elevated amounts of both MPs and NPs. The rainfall overflow and downstream of the city centre were the most contaminated sites. Lipid peroxidation, metallothioneins, and protein aggregates (amyloids) were significantly increased at the most contaminated sites and were significantly correlated with NPs in tissues. Based on the levels of MPs and NPs in mussels exposed to municipal effluent, wastewater treatment plants appear to mitigate plastic contamination albeit not completely. In conclusion, the data support the hypothesis that mussels placed in urbanized areas are more contaminated by plastics, which are associated with oxidative damage. The highest responses observed at the overflow site suggest that tire wear and/or asphalt (road) erosion MPs/NPs represent important sources of contamination for the aquatic biota.

Risk assessment framework for microplastic in marine environments

Constantly raising microplastic (MP) contamination of water sources poses a direct threat to the gentle balance of the marine environment. This study focuses on a multifactor hazard evaluation of conventional (polyethylene - PE, polypropylene - PP, and polystyrene - PS) and alternative (polyethylene terephthalate with 25 % or 50 % recycled material and polylactic acid) plastics. The risk assessment framework explored included MP abundance, water acidification potential, surface oxidation, fragmentation, and bacterial growth inhibition. Based on MP monitoring campaigns worldwide, we conclude that PE-based plastics are the most abundant MPs in water samples (comprise up to 82 % the MP in those samples). A year-long weathering experiment showed that PS-based and PP-based plastics were oxidized to a higher extent, resulting in the highest water acidification with pH reduction of up to three orders of magnitude. Finally, our laboratory experiments showed that weathered PS was the most fragile plastic during mechanical degradation, while both PP- and PS-based plastic extracts showed a significant growth inhibition toward the marine microorganisms (Bacillus sp. and Pseudoaltermonas sp). Using the examined factors as weighted inputs into our framework, this holistic evaluation of hazards suggest that PP-based plastic products were the most hazardous compared to the other conventional and alternative plastic types.

Oysters and mussels as equivalent sentinels of microplastics and natural particles in coastal environments

Filter-feeder organisms such as oyster and mussels are exposed to particles like microplastics (MPs). Although widely used to monitor MPs contamination, little is known about their performance as sentinels, which are biological monitors accumulating contaminants without significant adverse effects. This study comparatively evaluated the quantitative and qualitative accumulation of MPs by oysters (Crassostrea brasiliana) and mussels (Perna perna) along a gradient of contamination in a highly urbanized estuarine system of Brazil. In the most contaminated site, both species presented the worst status of nutrition and health, and also one of the highest MPs levels reported for molluscs to date (up to 44.1 particles·g^-1). Despite some inter-specific differences, oysters and mussels were suitable and showed an equivalent performance as sentinels, reflecting the gradient condition demonstrated for other contaminants in the region. The similarity in MPs accumulation was also observed for qualitative aspects (polymer composition, sizes, shapes and colors). Particles were mostly <1000 μm, fibrous, colorless and composed by cellulose and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Thus, despite small variations, the usage of C. brasiliana and P. perna is recommended and provides reliable information for environmental levels of microplastics.

Interaction between microplastics and humic acid and its effect on their properties as revealed by molecular dynamics simulations

The characteristics and fates of microplastics (MPs) and humic acid (HA) in the environment are significantly influenced by their interactions. Thus, the influence of the MP-HA interaction on their dynamic characteristics was explored. Upon MP-HA interaction, the number of hydrogen bonds established in the HA domains decreased significantly, and the water molecules bridging the hydrogen bonds shifted to the exterior regions of the MP-HA aggregates. The distribution intensity of Ca²⁺ located at ∼0.21 nm around HA deceased, indicating that the coordination of Ca²⁺ with the carboxyl on HA was impaired in the presence of MPs. Additionally, the Ca²⁺-HA electrostatic interaction was suppressed because of the steric hindrance of the MPs. However, the MP-HA interaction improved the distribution of water molecules and metal cations around the MPs. The diffusion coefficient of HA decreased from 0.34 × 10^-5 cm²/s to 0.20-0.28 × 10^-5 cm²/s in the presence of MPs, implying that the diffusion of HA was retarded. The diffusion coefficients of polyethylene and polystyrene increased from 0.29 × 10^-5 cm²/s and 0.18 × 10^-5 cm²/s to 0.32 × 10^-5 cm²/s and 0.22 × 10^-5 cm²/s, respectively, indicating that the interaction with HA accelerated the migration of polyethylene and polystyrene. These findings highlight the potential environmental hazards posed by MPs in aquatic environments.

Microplastics in surface waters of tropical estuaries around a densely populated Brazilian bay

Brazil is the fourth largest producer of plastic waste in the world, but studies on pollution of rivers and estuaries by microplastics are still scarce. This study is located in the state of Bahia (Northeast region) in ten estuarine environments around Todos dos Santos Bay (TDB), the largest Brazilian bay, where more than 3 million Brazilians live. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the input of microplastics into the TSB by river. Microplastic abundance, size, morphology and water quality were determined during three sampling campaigns. All river samples were highly polluted with microplastics (mostly <150 μm), up to 33,000 items m^-3, exceeding values observed in most estuaries worldwide. The poor quality of the river water reflect the deficient treatment of domestic wastewater in the state of Bahia (49% are not treated), and in this study is shown a correlation with the abundance of microplastics, indicating their possible main source. Artisanal fishing can also contribute locally to this pollution. Morover, the results highlight the importance of sampling small microplastics (<100 μm) to avoid important underestimation of this pollution. Based on these data, the three major rivers would discharge 3.88 trillion items into the Bay each year, equivalent to 4.75 × 10⁵ m² of plastic. Further research in surface water systems is essential, given that the average wastewater treatment rates in the country and in the Northeast and North regions are only 43%, 32%, and 12%, respectively.

Beyond the exposure phase: Microplastic depuration and experimental implications

Currently, most studies focus on the effect of microplastics (MPs) in the exposure phase, but pay limited attention to the depuration phase. Depuration is a promising practice to achieve safe aquaculture production, which is also helpful to understand the long-term impact of MPs. Therefore, investigating the post-exposure scenarios of MPs has great practical significance. In order to provide implications for future research, this work attempted to systematize the current findings and knowledge gaps regarding the depuration of MPs. More specifically, three methods, including direct fitting, one-compartment kinetic model and interval observation, for estimating the retention time of MPs to further determine the minimum depuration time were introduced, in which the one-compartment kinetic model could also be used to calculate the depuration rate constant and biological half-life of MPs. Moreover, the post-exposure effect of MPs generally presented three scenarios: incomplete reversal (legacy effect), return to control level (recovery) and stimulatory response (hormesis-like effect). In addition, the possible tissue translocation of MPs, the influence of food abundance and body shape on MPs egestion, and the potential interaction with environmental factors, have aroused great scientific concerns and need further exploration and clarification.

Policy impact on microplastic reduction in China: Observation and prediction using statistical model in an intensive mariculture bay

Plastic pollution in the environment has spurred debate among scientists, policymakers, and the general public over how industrialization and consumerism are wreaking havoc on our ecosystem, but some policies might assist to ameliorate the problem in the near future. In this study, the decision tree classifier and Bayesian Structural Time Series (BSTS) model was used to anticipate the possible sources of microplastics and their near future state in 26 surface sediment and a sediment core, respectively in Sansha Bay, which has been criticized for its intensive mariculture applications. An inventory of microplastics in the sediment core was estimated, and it was discovered that during the previous six decades, an average of 181.95 tons of microplastics were deposited, with an average deposition (by a layer of sediment) of 179.44 tons/cm. According to the DT classifier, mariculture was the primary source of microplastics, whereas urban and industrial areas were the primary sources of POPs. The Bayesian Structural Time Series (BSTS) model revealed a microplastic downward slope, indicating that regional and national strategies implemented might successfully reduce microplastic pollution regionally.

Ecotoxicity of Heteroaggregates of Polystyrene Nanospheres in Chironomidae and Amphibian

Due to their various properties as polymeric materials, plastics have been produced, used and ultimately discharged into the environment. Although some studies have shown their negative impacts on the marine environment, the effects of plastics on freshwater organisms are still poorly studied, while they could be widely in contact with this pollution. The current work aimed to better elucidate the impact and the toxicity mechanisms of two kinds of commercial functionalized nanoplastics, i.e., carboxylated polystyrene microspheres of, respectively, 350 and 50 nm (PS350 and PS50), and heteroaggregated PS50 with humic acid with an apparent size of 350 nm (PSHA), all used at environmental concentrations (0.1 to 100 µg L^-1). For this purpose, two relevant biological and aquatic models-amphibian larvae, Xenopus laevis, and dipters, Chironomus riparius-were used under normalized exposure conditions. The acute, chronic, and genetic toxicity parameters were examined and discussed with regard to the fundamental characterization in media exposures and, especially, the aggregation state of the nanoplastics. The size of PS350 and PSHA remained similar in the Xenopus and Chironomus exposure media. Inversely, PS50 aggregated in both exposition media and finally appeared to be micrometric during the exposition tests. Interestingly, this work highlighted that PS350 has no significant effect on the tested species, while PS50 is the most prone to alter the growth of Xenopus but not of Chironomus. Finally, PSHA induced a significant genotoxicity in Xenopus.
