Oxygen vacancies enhancing performance of Mg-Co-Ce oxide composite for the selective catalytic ozonation of ammonia in water

A systematic investigation of peracetic acid oxidation and polymeric coagulants re-flocculation to enhance activated sludge dewatering: Multi-porous skeleton structures

In this research, the effects of peracetic acid (PAA), polymeric flocculants, and their combined conditioning on improving the dewatering performance were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that sludge cake moisture content, capillary suction time (CST), and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) were 70.6%, 48.1 s, and 3.42 × 1012 m/kg after adding 0.10 g/gMLSS PAA for 50 min, representing reductions of 12.60%, 40.32%, and 33.98%, respectively. Additionally, conditioning of sludge with polyferric sulfate (PFS), polyaluminum chloride (PAC), and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) enhanced sludge properties in the following order: CPAM > PAC > PFS. After the PAA oxidation and re-flocculation process, the optimal dosages of PFS, PAC, and CPAM were reduced to 1.5 g/L, 0.9 g/L, and 0.04 g/L, respectively. The sludge dewatering performance significantly improved, with sludge cake moisture content measuring 65.8%, 66.3%, and 61.7%, respectively. Moreover, the spatial multi-porous skeleton structures were formed via re-flocculation to improve the sludge dewatering. Furthermore, economic evaluation validated that the pre-oxidation and re-flocculation process could be considered an economically viable option. These research findings could serve as a valuable reference for practical engineering applications.

Integrated model of ozone mass transfer and oxidation kinetic: Construction, solving and analysis

Ozone-based advanced oxidation process (O3-AOPs) is rapidly evolving, but the surge of emerging pollutants brings new challenges for ozone oxidation research. Herein, we proposed a state-of-the-art model for simultaneously analyzing both ozone mass transfer and oxidation kinetics during ozone oxidation of emerging organic contaminants. The numerical solution and graphical representations of the integrated model were utilized to analyze the dynamics of ozone and pollutant concentration. An in-depth analysis of the integrated model revealed that the reaction rate constants in this present study were higher than previously reported apparent reaction rate constants, and catalysts were not always necessary. Finally, we developed an installable mobile application (APP) that allowed the simulation of the dynamic process for ozone oxidizing organic pollutants in the laboratory, which offered theoretical support for the selection of experimental conditions. The results of model simulation not only provide scientific explanations for counter-intuitive experimental phenomena, but also optimized experimental conditions to enhance ozone utilization.

Electric field-enhanced heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (EHCO) process for sulfadiazine removal: The role of cathodic reduction

In this work, an electric field-enhanced heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (EHCO) was systematically investigated using a prepared FeOx/PAC catalyst. The EHCO process exhibited high sulfadiazine (SDZ) and TOC removal efficiency compared with electrocatalysis (EC) and heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) process. Almost 100% of SDZ was removed within 2 min, and the TOC removal reached approximately 85% within 60 min. Quenching experiments and EPR analysis suggested that the prominent SDZ and TOC removal performance is supported by the enhanced ·OH generation ability. Further study proved that H2O2 formed by O2 electrochemical reduction, peroxone reaction and electrochemical reduction of ozone contributed to improving ·OH generation. Furthermore, the EHCO system showed satisfactory stability and recyclability compared to conventional HCO systems, and the SDZ and TOC removal rates were maintained at ≥95% and ≥70% in 16 consecutive recycles, respectively. Meanwhile, XPS analysis and Boehm's titration for the FeOx/PAC catalyst used in HCO and EHCO process confirmed that the external electron supply could restrain the oxidation of surface functional groups of PAC and maintain a balance of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio, which proved the critical role of cathode reduction in catalyst in situ regeneration during long consecutive recycles. In addition, the EHCO system could achieve more than 80% SDZ removal within 2 min in different water matrices. These results confirmed that the EHCO process has a wide application perspective for refractory organics removal in actual wastewater.

La-MOFs in situ loaded Al2O3 particles for effective removal of phosphate in water: characterization, application potential analysis, and mechanism

Excessive phosphorus in water would cause eutrophication and deterioration of the ecological environment. Herein, the La-MOFs/Al2O3 composite was successfully prepared by the in situ hydrothermal synthesis method for granulation, which was conducive to exerting the phosphate adsorption capacity and facilitating practical application. The materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, BET, FTIR, and Zeta. In addition, the adsorption performance of La-MOFs/Al2O3 was evaluated through adsorption kinetics and isotherms, showing that the Langmuir adsorption capacity was 16.34 mgP·g-1 (25 °C) and increased with the water temperature. Moreover, the batch influence experiments of intimal pH, adsorbent dosage, coexisting ions, and stability tests were performed to analyze the potential for practical applications and verified through the natural micro-polluted water samples from Houxi River and Bailu Lake (China). The results indicated that the La-MOFs/Al2O3 was suited to a wide pH range of 4 to 10 and the phosphate removal efficiency remained above 70% after continuous use for four times, exhibiting excellent stability. It also had excellent selectivity in the presence of SO42-, Cl-, NO3-, and HCO3-, only decreased to 70.24% at high HCO3- ion concentration of 60 mg/L, respectively. And the La-MOFs/Al2O3 had excellent adsorption of total phosphorus, phosphate, and organic phosphorus in the actual river and lake water and completely removed dissolved phosphorus. Finally, a phosphate adsorption mechanism model involved in electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange was proposed. Therefore, La-MOFs/Al2O3 could be considered to be an excellent phosphorus adsorbent for application in the actual water environmental remediation.

Chlorine-mediated electrochemical advanced oxidation process for ammonia removal: Mechanisms, characteristics and expectation

Chlorine-Mediated Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation (Cl-EAO) technology is a promising approach for ammonia removal from wastewater due to its numerous advantages, including small infrastructure, short processing time, easy operation, high security, and high nitrogen selectivity. This paper provides a review of the ammonia oxidation mechanisms, characteristics, and anticipated applications of Cl-EAO technology. The mechanisms of ammonia oxidation encompass breakpoint chlorination and chlorine radical oxidation, although the contributions of active chlorine, Cl, and ClO remain uncertain. This study critically examines the limitations of existing research and suggests that a combination of determining free radical concentration and simulating a kinetic model would help elucidate the contributions of active chlorine, Cl, and ClO to ammonia oxidation. Furthermore, this review comprehensively summarizes the characteristics of ammonia oxidation, including kinetic properties, influencing factors, products, and electrodes. The amalgamation of Cl-EAO technology with photocatalytic and concentration technologies has the potential to enhance ammonia oxidation efficiency. Future research should concentrate on clarifying the contributions of active chlorine, Cl, and ClO to ammonia oxidation, the production of chloramines and other byproducts, and the development of more efficient anodes for the Cl-EAO process. The main objective of this review is to enhance the understanding of the Cl-EAO process. The findings presented herein contribute to the advancement of Cl-EAO technology and provide a foundation for future studies in this field.

Selective and effective oxidation of ammonium to dinitrogen in MgO/Na2SO3/K2S2O8 system

The oxidation of ammonium (NH₄⁺) to dinitrogen (N₂) with high selectivity and high efficiency is still a challenge. Herein, a novel sunlight induced persulfate (PS)-based AOPs process (MgO/Na₂SO₃/PS/hv) was proposed by introducing solid base (MgO) and hydrated electron (e_aq^-), to selectively oxidize NH₄⁺ to N₂, with high selectivity and high efficiency at a wide range of pH value. The deprotonation of NH₄⁺ into NH₃ by MgO and the generation of •OH and SO₄^-• by PS activation were responsible for the high efficiency of NH₄⁺ oxidation. The buffering capacity provided by MgO to proton released from PS activation made the NH₄⁺ oxidation possible at a wide pH range. The e_aq^- from the Na₂SO₃/hv process was the main active specie to reduce NO₂^-and NO₃^- (NO_x^-) into N₂, responsible for high N₂ selectivity of NH₄⁺ oxidation. 100% NH₄⁺ could be oxidized within 30 min, and N₂ selectivity exceeded 96% at the initial pH range of 3-11 and the initial concentration of NH₄⁺ of 30 mg N/L. Application of Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation in Wastewater Treatment: An Overview

Catalytic ozonation is a non-selective mineralization technology of organic matter in water by using active free radicals generated by ozone degradation. Catalytic ozonation technology can be divided into homogeneous catalytic reactions using metal ions as catalysts and heterogeneous catalytic reactions using solid catalysts. Homogeneous catalytic ozonation technology has many problems, such as low mineralization rate, secondary pollution caused by the introduction of metal ions and low utilization efficiency of oxidants, which limit its practical application. Compared with homogeneous catalytic ozonation technology, heterogeneous catalytic ozonation technology has the advantages of easy recovery, lower cost of water treatment, higher activity and improved mineralization rate of organic matter. This overview classifies and describes catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation technology, including the different types of metal oxides, metal-free catalysts, and substrates used to immobilize catalysts. In addition, the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process involved in the multiphase complex reaction process is discussed. The effects of different parameters on the performance of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation are also discussed.

Selective oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen gas by facile Co2+/PMS/chloridion process through reactive chlorine radicals

The selective oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen gas in some special wastewater is of paramount significance, but still a challenge. In this study, chlorine radical (Cl•)-mediated oxidation process was developed to realize the selective oxidation of NH₄⁺-N to N₂, in which Cl• was generated in Co²⁺/peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/chloridion (Cl^-) system. The effect of various operational parameters on the efficiency and selectivity of ammonia oxidation to N₂ was investigated, such as PMS concentration, Co²⁺ concentration, Cl^- concentration and pH value. The experiment results showed that Cl•-mediated NH₄⁺-N oxidation reaction exhibited high NH₄⁺-N removal efficiency and considerable selectivity to N₂ in the range of pH from 2.0 to 6.5. The removal efficiency of NH₄⁺-N was 90.39%, and the selectivity of NH₄⁺-N to N₂ achieved up to 97.16%. The possible mechanism for high efficient and selective oxidation of NH₄⁺-N to N₂ was tentatively proposed. The process developed in this study could provide a novel technology for the treatment and selective oxidation of ammonium in some special types of ammonium-containing wastewater.
