Rice HUSK silica: A review from conventional uses to new catalysts for advanced oxidation processes

The rice industry is of great importance worldwide and within the cereal industrialization process, rice husk is obtained as waste, a by-product with various alternative uses, among others, the obtaining of amorphous silica, a covalent oxide with chemical, structural and textural properties suitable for use as catalytic support. This review shows the potential of rice husk silica in the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts with transition metals for the oxidation of different polluting molecules present in water, as well as the limitations of the catalytic system and the way to overcome them through new synthesis routes, to obtain single atom catalysts - SACs. The main preparation strategies applied for aqueous phase systems are summarized, as well as the studies of single atom catalysts in oxidation reactions of recalcitrant compounds using silica as support and, finally, the perspectives and opportunities regarding this novel topic.

In Situ Production of Hydroxyl Radicals via Three-Electron Oxygen Reduction: Opportunities for Water Treatment

The electro-Fenton (EF) process is an advanced oxidation technology with significant potential; however, it is limited by two steps: generation and activation of H2O2. In contrast to the production of H2O2 via the electrochemical two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the electrochemical three-electron (3e-) ORR can directly activate molecular oxygen to yield the hydroxyl radical (⋅OH), thus breaking through the conceptual and operational limitations of the traditional EF reaction. Therefore, the 3e- ORR is a vital process for efficiently producing ⋅OH in situ, thus charting a new path toward the development of green water-treatment technologies. This review summarizes the characteristics and mechanisms of the 3e- ORR, focusing on the basic principles and latest progress in the in situ generation and efficient utilization of ⋅OH through the modulation of the reaction pathway, shedding light on the rational design of 3e- ORR catalysts, mechanistic exploration, and practical applications for water treatment. Finally, the future developments and challenges of efficient, stable, and large-scale utilization of ⋅OH are discussed based on achieving optimal 3e- ORR regulation and the potential to combine it with other technologies.

Biochar Meets Single-Atom: A Catalyst for Efficient Utilization in Environmental Protection Applications and Energy Conversion

Single-atom catalysts (SACs), combining the advantages of multiphase and homogeneous catalysis, have been increasingly investigated in various catalytic applications. Carbon-based SACs have attracted much attention due to their large specific surface area, high porosity, particular electronic structure, and excellent stability. As a cheap and readily available carbon material, biochar has begun to be used as an alternative to carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other such expensive carbon matrices to prepare SACs. However, a review of biochar-based SACs for environmental pollutant removal and energy conversion and storage is lacking. This review focuses on strategies for synthesizing biochar-based SACs, such as pre-treatment of organisms with metal salts, insertion of metal elements into biochar, or pyrolysis of metal-rich biomass, which are more simplistic ways of synthesizing SACs. Meanwhile, this paper attempts to 1) demonstrate their applications in environmental remediation based on advanced oxidation technology and energy conversion and storage based on electrocatalysis; 2) reveal the catalytic oxidation mechanism in different catalytic systems; 3) discuss the stability of biochar-based SACs; and 4) present the future developments and challenges regarding biochar-based SACs.

Emerging single-atom catalysts in the detection and purification of contaminated gases

Single atom catalysts (SACs) show exceptional molecular adsorption and electron transfer capabilities owing to their remarkable atomic efficiency and tunable electronic structure, thereby providing promising solutions for diverse important processes including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis, etc. Consequently, SACs hold great potential in the detection and degradation of pollutants present in contaminated gases. Over the past few years, SACs have made remarkable achievements in the field of contaminated gas detection and purification. In this review, we first provide a concise introduction to the significance and urgency of gas detection and pollutant purification, followed by a comprehensive overview of the structural feature identification methods for SACs. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the three key properties of SACs for detecting contaminated gases and discuss the research progress made in utilizing SACs to purify polluted gases. Finally, we analyze the enhancement mechanism and advantages of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification, and propose strategies to address challenges and expedite the development of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification.

Advances in Atomically Dispersed Metal and Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Catalysts for Advanced Oxidation Technologies and Water Remediation: From Microenvironment Modulation to Non-Radical Mechanisms

Atomically dispersed metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon catalysts (M-N-C) have been attracting tremendous attentions thanks to their unique MNx active sites and fantastic catalytic activities in advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) for water remediation. However, precisely tailoring the microenvironment of active sites at atomic level is still an intricate challenge so far, and understanding of the non-radical mechanisms in persulfate activation exists many uncertainties. In this review, latest developments on the microenvironment modulation strategies of atomically dispersed M-N-C catalysts including regulation of central metal atoms, regulation of coordination numbers, regulation of coordination heteroatoms, and synergy between single-atom catalysts (SACs) with metal species are systematically highlighted and discussed. Afterwards, progress and underlying limitations about the typical non-radical pathways from production of singlet oxygen, electron transfer mechanism to generation of high-valent metal species are well demonstrated to inspire intrinsic insights about the mechanisms of M-N-C/persulfate systems. Lastly, perspectives for the remaining challenges and opportunities about the further development of carbon-based SACs in environment remediation are also pointed out. It is believed that this review will be much valuable for the further design of active sites in M-N-C/persulfate catalytic systems and promote the wide application of SACs in various fields.

Design of Single-Atom Catalysts for E lectrocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

The Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) can be used to solve environmental problems as well as energy shortage. However, ENRR still faces the problems of low NH3 yield and low selectivity. The NH3 yield and selectivity in ENRR are affected by multiple factors such as electrolytic cells, electrolytes, and catalysts, etc. Among these catalysts are at the core of ENRR research. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with intrinsic activity have become an emerging technology for numerous energy regeneration, including ENRR. In particular, regulating the microenvironment of SACs (hydrogen evolution reaction inhibition, carrier engineering, metal-carrier interaction, etc.) can break through the limitation of intrinsic activity of SACs. Therefore, this Review first introduces the basic principles of NRR and outlines the key factors affecting ENRR. Then a comprehensive summary is given of the progress of SACs (precious metals, non-precious metals, non-metallic) and diatomic catalysts (DACs) in ENRR. The impact of SACs microenvironmental regulation on ENRR is highlighted. Finally, further research directions for SACs in ENRR are discussed.

Preparation and Application of Single-Atom Cobalt Catalysts in Organic Synthesis and Environmental Remediation

The development of high-performance catalysts plays a crucial role in facilitating chemical production and reducing environmental contamination. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), a class of catalysts that bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have garnered increasing attention because of their unique activity, selectivity, and stability in many pivotal reactions. Meanwhile, the scarcity of precious metal SACs calls for the arrival of cost-effective SACs. Cobalt, as a common non-noble metal, possesses tremendous potential in the field of single-atom catalysis. Despite their potential, reviews about single-atom Co catalysts (Co-SACs) are lacking. Accordingly, this review thoroughly summarized various preparation methodologies of Co-SACs, particularly pyrolysis; its application in the specific domain of organic synthesis and environmental remediation is discussed as well. The structure-activity relationship and potential catalytic mechanism of Co-SACs are elucidated through some representative reactions. The imminent challenges and development prospects of Co-SACs are discussed in detail. The findings and insights provided herein can guide further exploration and development in this charming area of catalyst design, leading to the realization of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes.

Understanding the Distance Effect of the Single-Atom Active Sites in Fenton-Like Reactions for Efficient Water Remediation

Emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising in water remediation through Fenton-like reactions. Despite the notable enhancement of catalytic activity through increasing the density of single-atom active sites, the performance improvement is not solely attributed to the increase in the number of active sites. The variation of catalytic behaviors stemming from the increased atomic density is particularly elusive and deserves an in-depth study. Herein, single-atom Fe catalysts (FeSA-CN) with different distances (dsite) between the adjacent single-atom Fe sites are constructed by controlling Fe loading. With the decrease in dsite value, remarkably enhanced catalytic activity of FeSA-CN is realized via the electron transfer regime with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The decrease in dsite value promotes electronic communication and further alters the electronic structure in favor of PMS activation. Moreover, the two adjacent single-atom Fe sites collectively adsorb PMS and achieve single-site desorption of the PMS decomposition products, maintaining continuous PMS activation and contaminant removal. Moreover, the FeSA-CN/PMS system exhibits excellent anti-interference performance for various aquatic systems and good durability in continuous-flow experiments, indicating its great potential for water treatment applications. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the distance effect of single-atom active sites on water remediation by designing densely populated SACs.

Single-Atom Catalysts on Covalent Organic Frameworks for Energy Applications

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been investigated and applied to energy conversion devices. However, issues of metal agglomeration, low metal loading, and substrate stability have hindered realization of the SACs' full potential. Recently, covalent organic framework (COF)-based SACs have emerged as promising materials to enable highly efficient catalytic reactions. Here, we summarize the representative COF-based SACs and their wide application in clean energy devices and conversion reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and oxygen evolution reaction. Based on their catalysis conditions, these reactions are categorized into photocatalyzed and electrocatalyzed reactions. We also summarize their design strategies, including heteroatom inclusion, donor-acceptor pairs, pore engineering, interface engineering, etc. Although COF-based SACs are promising, more efforts, such as linkage engineering, functional groups, ionization, multifunctional sites for cocatalyzed systems, etc., could improve them to be the ideal SAC materials. At the end, we provide our perspectives on where the field will proceed in the next 5 years.

Efficient propane mineralization over unsaturated Pd cluster/CeO2 with prominent C-C cleavage capacity driven by inherent oxygen activation ability

Light alkanes extensively presented in industrial exhausts have led tremendous harm to the atmospheric environment and human health. However, the catalytic destruction of light alkanes generally operates at elevated temperatures and the consequent reaction by-products are inevitably produced. It is therefore of great significance to engineer catalysts with superior thermal stability, internal activity and selectivity. Herein, we developed a Pd cluster/CeO2 catalyst (Pdn/CeO2) by a scalable deposition precipitation strategy, which demonstrates unexpected activity and thermal stability in the presence of 5% H2O attributing to abundant unsaturated Pd metal sites and excellent oxygen dissociation performance. Pdn/CeO2 possesses a highly efficient C-C cleavage capability due to the persistent formation of a large number of oxygen vacancies. In comparison, the Pd1/CeO2 catalyst, which is preferential for C-H bond cleavage and inactive for C-C bond cracking, produces remarkable hazardous organic by-products such as propyne and propylene, inhibiting the continuous decomposition of propane. The present study sheds critical insights into engineering efficient and stable catalysts for light alkane destruction.

Catalytic activity and reaction mechanisms of single-atom metals anchored on nitrogen-doped carbons for peroxymonosulfate activation

Single-atom catalysts have attracted tremendous interests in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes due to their maximum atom utilization and high reactivity, however the role of nitrogen-coordinated metal (MNx) sites with different metal centers remain blurred. Herein, a series of single-atom metals anchored on nitrogen-doped carbons (denoted as M-N/C, M = Fe, Co, Cu, and Mn) using zeolitic imidazolate frameworks as precursors are constructed for PMS activation. Their catalytic activity order follows Fe > Co > undoped N/C > Cu > Mn, especially the degradation rates of the eight model pollutants for Fe-N/C and Co-N/C are 2.5-22.4 and 1.5-19.5 times higher than those for undoped N/C, respectively. Moreover, the nature of catalytic metal center can govern the degradation behaviors in the coexisting water constituents. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that singlet oxygen (1O2) is the main oxidant responsible for pollutant degradation and its evolution path over FeN4 or CoN4 sites (PMS→OH*→*O→1O2) is elucidated, between which FeN4 with lower energy barrier is more conducive to 1O2 generation. This study can not only provide guidance for the development of highly active atomic M-N/C catalysts, but also lead to a better molecular-level understanding of PMS activation mechanism over MN4 sites.

Bamboo charcoal fiber bundles loaded MOF-derived magnetic Co/CoO porous polyhedron for efficiently catalytic degradation of tetracyclines hydrochloride

The health of living things and the ecosystem of the planet have both been negatively impacted by antibiotic residue in the water environment. There has been a lot of interest in the catalyst made of metal-carbon compounds from MOFs as a potential solution for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce reactive oxygen species to catalyze the degradation of residual antibiotics. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67) on bamboo fiber bundles (BFB) were pyrolyzed to produce magnetic Co/CoO nanoparticles with porous polyhedrons mounted on bamboo charcoal fiber bundles (BCFB)(BCFB@PCo/CoO). Specific surface area of obtained BCFB@PCo/CoO with abundant active sites arrives at 302.41 m2/g. The catalytic degradation efficiency of Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), a target contaminant, could reach up to 99.94% within 15 minutes (PMS = 0.4g/L, Cat. = 0.2g/L). The effects of potential factors, including PMS dosage, interference ions, and temperature, on catalytic degradation efficiencies were investigated. Magnetic recovery and antimicrobial properties of the BCFB@PCo/CoO were also evaluated and the possible degradation pathways were explored. Catalytic mechanism explorations of BCFB@PCo/CoO/PMS system reveal MOF-derived magnetic Co/CoO nanoparticles embedded in BCFB promote the synergistic interaction of both radicals and non-radical pathways for catalytic degradation of TCH. The novel BCFB@PCo/CoO provides an alternative to deal with wastewater containing antibiotics.

Dual-Site Metal Catalysts for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Reaction

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) is a promising and green approach for reducing atmospheric CO2 concentration and achieving high-valued conversion of CO2 under the carbon-neutral policy. In CO2 RR, the dual-site metal catalysts (DSMCs) have received wide attention for their ingenious design strategies, abundant active sites, and excellent catalytic performance attributed to the synergistic effect between dual-site in terms of activity, selectivity and stability, which plays a key role in catalytic reactions. This review provides a systematic summary and detailed classification of DSMCs for CO2 RR, describes the mechanism of synergistic effects in catalytic reactions, and also introduces in situ characterization techniques commonly used in CO2 RR. Finally, the main challenges and prospects of dual-site metal catalysts and even multi-site catalysts for CO2 recycling are analyzed. It is believed that based on the understanding of bimetallic site catalysts and synergistic effects in CO2 RR, well-designed high-performance, low-cost electrocatalysts are promising for achieving CO2 conversion, electrochemical energy conversion and storage in the future.

Activation of periodate by N-doped iron-based porous carbon for degradation of sulfisoxazole: Significance of catalyst-mediated electron transfer mechanism

Periodate (PI) has recently been studied as an excellent oxidant in advanced oxidation processes, and its reported mechanism is mainly the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work presents an efficient approach using N-doped iron-based porous carbon (Fe@N-C) to activate periodate for the degradation of sulfisoxazole (SIZ). Characterization results indicated the catalyst has high catalytic activity, stable structure, and high electron transfer activity. In terms of degradation mechanism, it is pointed out that the non-radical pathway is the dominant mechanism. In order to prove this mechanism, we have carried out scavenging experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, salt bridge experiments and electrochemical experiments, which demonstrate the occurrence of mediated electron transfer mechanism. Fe@N-C could mediate the electron transfer from organic contaminant molecules to PI, thus improving the efficiency of PI utilization, rather than simply inducing the activation of PI through Fe@N-C. The overall results of this study provided a new understanding into the application of Fe@N-C activated PI in wastewater treatment.

Shaddock peels derived multilayer biochar with embedded CoO@Co nanoparticles for peroxymonosulfate based wastewater treatment

The utilization of bio-wastes, such as shaddock peels, is of great significance for sustainable development. Combined with the potential of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation process (AOP) in wastewater treatment, a highly efficient functional catalyst, derived from shaddock peels biochar (SPC) and embedded with CoO@Co nanoparticles, i.e. Co-SPC-x(y), was prepared using a facile impregnation-calcination method and used for refractory organics degradation with PMS. The decoration amount of Co and annealing temperature were optimized, and the effects of various reaction factors were investigated. The results indicated that the optimized sample of Co-SPC-10 (900) consisted of multilayer biochar with curly edges and highly dispersed CoO@Co nanoparticles in the range of 20-200 nm, which is in cubic metallic Co and CoO. Moreover, it also possessed a specific surface area of 248.6 m²/g, and exhibited excellent PMS activation ability with ∼100% chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) removal ratio within only 12 min of operation. The Co-SPC-10 (900)/PMS system showed relatively high tolerance for HPO₄^2-, NO₃^- and SO₄^2-, while the Cl^- and HA had considerable effects on it. Mechanism exploration results revealed that both radical and non-radical pathways existed in the Co-SPC-10 (900)/PMS system, in which the multilayered biochar functioned as an electron transfer carrier to facilitate the continuous cycle of Co²⁺/Co³⁺ in the CoO@Co nanoparticles by reacting with the absorbed CTC and PMS, resulting in the production of •OH, SO₄^•-, O₂^•- and ¹O₂. Additionally, the Co-SPC-10 (900) also showed good stability and catalytic oxidation performance for various refractory organics.

Single-Atom Catalysts in Environmental Engineering: Progress, Outlook and Challenges

Recently, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted wide attention in the field of environmental engineering. Compared with their nanoparticle counterparts, SACs possess high atomic efficiency, unique catalytic activity, and selectivity. This review summarizes recent studies on the environmental remediation applications of SACs in (1) gaseous: volatile organic compounds (VOCs) treatment, NO_x reduction, CO₂ reduction, and CO oxidation; (2) aqueous: Fenton-like advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), hydrodehalogenation, and nitrate/nitrite reduction. We present the treatment activities and reaction mechanisms of various SACs and propose challenges and future opportunities. We believe that this review will provide constructive inspiration and direction for future SAC research in environmental engineering.

Activity and mechanism of vanadium sulfide for organic contaminants oxidation with peroxymonosulfate

Transition metal sulfides have been demonstrated to be effective for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation towards wastewater treatment. However, the activity of vanadium sulfide (VS₄) and the role of the chemical state of V have not been revealed. Here, three types of VS₄ with various morphologies and chemical states of V were synthesized by using methanol (M-VS₄, nanosphere composed of nanosheets), ethanol (E-VS₄, sea urchin like nanosphere) and ultrapure water (U-VS₄, compact nanosphere) as hydrothermal solvent, respectively, and used as heterogeneous catalysts to activate PMS for the degradation of refractory organic pollutants. The effects of PMS concentration, temperature, pH, inorganic ions, and humic acid (HA) on the degradation efficiency of VS₄/PMS system were investigated systematically. The results indicated that the highest specific surface area and lowest ratio of V⁵⁺ enable E-VS₄/PMS system possessed the highest performance in degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), in which 100% TCH was removed after operating 10 min (0.805 min^-1) under a relatively low concentration of PMS (1 mM) and catalyst (100 mg/L). It also revealed that the system exhibited a typical radical process in TCH degradation, which could be attributed to the redox cycles between V⁵⁺, V⁴⁺ and V³⁺ in the presence of PMS to generate various radicals. This radical process enabled the E-VS₄/PMS system with a high activity in wide reaction conditions and high mineralization ratios in degrading various refractory organic pollutants within 10 min. In addition, the E-VS₄/PMS system exhibited favorable reusability and stability with very less V and S ions leaching, and showed excellent performance in real water purification.

Coordination engineering strategy of iron single-atom catalysts boosts anti-Cu(II) interference detection of As(III) with a high sensitivity

Mutual interference issues between heavy metal ions tremendously affect the detection reliability and accuracy in water quality analysis, especially the serious interference of Cu(II) on the detection of As(III) is greatly hard to overcome, which needs to be solved urgently. Herein, iron single-atom catalysts with different coordination structures of FeN₂C₂ and FeN₃P are constructed to selectively catalyze the detection of As(III) in the coexistence of Cu(II). FeN₃P achieves a high sensitivity of 3.90 µA ppb^-1 toward As(III) in NH₄Cl/NH₃·H₂O electrolyte (pH 8.0), completely avoiding Cu(II)-interference. Moreover, the turnover frequency (TOF) of FeN₃P is an order of magnitude higher than that of FeN₂C₂. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that an As-O bond of H₃AsO₃ is broken by the strong affinities between both P and O atoms and Fe and As atoms, and H₃AsO₃ are preferentially reduced by FeN₃P during adsorptive process. Meanwhile, the low reaction energy barrier of the rate-determined step for As(III) reduction over FeN₃P also accelerates the deposition of As(III) and enhances its response signals. The free-Cu(II) are difficult to adsorb on FeN₃P and do not compete with As(III) for Fe active sites, which contributes to the excellent anti-Cu(II) interference capability.
