A critical review on sources and environmental behavior of organophosphorus flame retardants in the soil: Current knowledge and future perspectives

A review of the present methods used to remediate soil and water contaminated with organophosphate esters and developmental directions

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used commercial additives, but their environmental persistence and toxicity raise serious concerns necessitating associated remediation strategies. Although there are various existing technologies for OPE removal, comprehensive screening for them is urgently needed to guide further research. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the techniques used to remove OPEs from soil and water, including their related influencing factors, removal mechanisms/degradation pathways, and practical applications. Based on an analysis of the latest literature, we concluded that (1) methods used to decontaminate OPEs include adsorption, hydrolysis, photolysis, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), activated sludge processes, and microbial degradation; (2) factors such as the quantity/characteristics of the catalysts/additives, pH value, inorganic ion concentration, and natural organic matter (NOM) affect OPE removal; (3) primary degradation mechanisms involve oxidation induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) (including •OH and SO4•-) and degradation pathways include hydrolysis, hydroxylation, oxidation, dechlorination, and dealkylation; (5) interference from the pH value, inorganic ion and the presence of NOM may limit complete mineralization during the treatment, impacting practical application of OPE removal techniques. This review provides guidance on existing and potential OPE removal methods, providing a theoretical basis and innovative ideas for developing more efficient and environmentally friendly techniques to treat OPEs in soil and water.

Organophosphate esters in terrestrial environments of Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica: Occurrence, potential sources, and bioaccumulation

Despite growing concerns regarding the long-range transport (LRT) and ecological risks of organophosphate esters (OPEs), information on the environmental behaviors of OPEs in polar terrestrial ecosystems remains inadequate. In the present study, 10 OPEs were analyzed in soil and vegetation samples collected from Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. The OPE concentrations in Antarctic soils, mosses, and lichens ranged from 0.87 to 15.7 ng/g dry weight (dw), 9.8 to 113 ng/g dw, and 3.6 to 75.2 ng/g dw, respectively. Non-chlorinated OPEs predominated in terrestrial matrices, accounting for approximately 76 % of the OPE composition. Source identification indicated that OPE contamination in Antarctica likely resulted from local anthropogenic sources and LRT. Moreover, the bioaccumulation behavior of OPEs from soil to vegetation was assessed using bioconcentration factors (BCFs), revealing a significant non-linear trend of initial increase and subsequent decrease in BCFs relative to the lipophilicities of the octanol-air partition coefficient (log KOA) and octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). While low levels of OPEs in Antarctic terrestrial environments were reported in this study, their sustained inputs and potential ecological risks in polar regions warrant further attention.

Structure-dependent destructive adsorption of organophosphate flame retardants on lipid membranes

The widespread use of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), a serious type of pervasive environmental contaminants, has led to a global concern regarding their diverse toxicities to living beings. Using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches, we systematically studied the adsorption, accumulation, and influence of a series of OPFRs on the lipid membranes of bacteria and cells. Our results revealed that OPFRs can aggregate in lipid membranes, leading to the destruction of membrane integrity. During this process, the molecular structure of the OPFRs is a dominant factor that significantly influences the strength of their interaction with the lipid membrane, resulting in varying degrees of biotoxicity. Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), owing to its large molecular size and strong hydrophobicity, causes severe membrane disruption through the formation of nanoclusters. The corresponding severe toxicity originates from the phase transitions of the lipid membranes. In contrast, smaller OPFRs such as triethyl phosphate (TEP) and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) have weaker hydrophobicity and induce minimal membrane disturbance and ineffective damage. In vivo, gavage of TPHP induced more severe barrier damage and inflammatory infiltration in mice than TEP or TCEP, confirming the higher toxicity of TPHP. Overall, our study elucidates the structure-dependent adsorption of OPFRs onto lipid membranes, highlighting their destructive interactions with membranes as the origin of OPFR toxicity.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and their alternatives in soil cores from a typical flame-retardant production park: Vertical distribution and potential influencing factors

With the prohibition on the production and use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have emerged as their alternatives. However, the vertical transport and associated influencing factors of these chemicals into soil are not clearly understood. To clarify the vertical distribution of the pollutants and related influencing factors, surface soil and soil core samples were collected at a depth in the range of 0.10-5.00 m in a typical 20-year-old flame-retardant production park and surrounding area. PBDEs and DBDPE show a clear point source distribution around the production park with their central concentrations up to 2.88 × 104 and 8.46 × 104 ng/g, respectively. OPFRs are mainly found in residential areas. The production conversion of PBDEs to DBDPE has obvious environmental characteristics. The vertical distribution revealed that most of the pollutants have penetrated into the soil 5.00 m or even deeper. The median concentrations of deca-BDE and DBDPE reached 50.9 and 9.85 × 103 ng/g, respectively, even at a depth of 5.00 m. Soil organic matter plays a crucial role in determining the vertical distribution, while soil clay particles have a greater impact on the high molecular weight and/or highly brominated compounds.

Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate presence inhibits methane production from anaerobic digestion: Alterations in organic matter transformation, cell physiological status, and microbial community

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely used in consumer products, leading to their unavoidable release into the environment, especially accumulation in anaerobic environments and posing potential risks. This study focused on Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), a representative OPFR, to investigate its effects on carbon transformation and methane production in anaerobic digestion. Increasing TCEP concentrations from control to 16 mg/L resulted in decreased cumulative methane yield (from 235.4 to 196.3 mL/g COD) and maximum daily methane yield (from 40.8 to 16.17 mL/(g COD·d)), along with an extended optimal anaerobic digestion time (from 15 to 20 days). Mechanistic analysis revealed TCEP binding to tyrosine-like proteins in extracellular polymeric substances, causing cell membrane integrity impairment. The TCEP-caused alteration of the physiological status of cells was demonstrated to be a significant contribution to the inhibited bioprocesses including acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. Illumina Miseq sequencing showed TCEP decreasing the relative abundance of acidogens (58.8 % to 46.0 %) and acetogens (7.1 % to 5.0 %), partly shifting the methanogenesis pathway from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. These findings enhance understanding of TCEP's impact on anaerobic digestion, emphasizing the environmental risk associated with its continued accumulation.

Synthesis of a novel Si-N-S flame retardant and its application on cotton cellulose biomacromolecule

A novel flame retardant containing Si, N, and S elements, ((2-(triethoxysilyl)ethyl)thio)ethan-1-amine hydrochloride (TETEA), was synthesized via a click reaction and characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Subsequently, the flame-retardant cotton fabric was fabricated by sol-gel method. The results indicated that TETEA was successfully loaded on cotton fabric and formed a uniform protective layer on the surface of cotton fabric, exhibiting excellent flame retardancy. The flame-retardant cotton fabric achieved limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 28.3 % and passed vertical combustion test without after-flame or afterglow time at TETEA concentration of 500 g/L. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the residual carbon content of the flame-retardant cotton fabric was much higher than that of the control under air and N2 conditions. Besides, the flame-retardant cotton fabric was not ignited in cone calorimeter test with an external heat flux of 35 kW/m2. The peak heat release rate and the total heat release decreased from 133.4 kW/m2 to 25.8 kW/m2 and from 26.46 MJ/m2 to 17.96 MJ/m2, respectively. This phosphorus-free flame retardant offers a simplified synthesis process without adverse environmental impacts, opening up a new avenue for the development environmentally friendly flame retardants compared to traditional alternatives.

Spatiotemporal patterns and deposition of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in air, foliage and litter in a subtropical forest of South China

Recent studies revealed the un-negligible impact of airborne organophosphate esters (OPEs) on phosphorus (P)-limited ecosystems. Subtropical forests, the global prevalence P-limited ecosystems, contain canopy structures that can effectively sequester OPEs from the atmosphere. However, little is known about the behavior and fate of OPEs in subtropical forest ecosystem, and the impact on the P cycling in this ecosystem. OPE concentrations in the understory air (at two heights), foliage, and litterfall were investigated in a subtropical forest in southern China. The median ∑OPE concentrations were 3149 and 2489 pg/m3 in the upper and bottom air, respectively. Foliage exhibited higher ∑OPE concentrations (median = 386 ng/g dry weight (dw)) compared to litter (median = 267 ng/g dw). The air OPE concentrations were ordered by broadleaved forest > mixed forest > coniferous forest, which corresponds to the results of canopy coverage or leaf area index. The spatial variation of OPEs in foliage and litter was likely caused by the leaf surface functional traits. Higher OPE concentrations were found in the wet season for understory air while in the dry season for foliage and litter, which were attributed to the changes in emission sources and meteorological conditions, respectively. The inverse temporal variation suggests the un-equilibrium partitioning of OPEs between leaf and air. The OPE concentrations during the litter-incubation presented similar temporal trends with those in foliage and litter, indicating the strong interaction of OPEs between the litter layer and the near-soil air, and the efficient buffer of litter layer played in the OPEs partitioning between soil and air. The median OPEs-associated P deposition fluxes through litterfall were 270, 186, and 249 μg P/m2·yr in the broadleaved, mixed, and coniferous forests, respectively. Although the fluxes accounted for approximately 0.2% of the total atmospheric P deposition, their significance to this P-limited ecosystem may not be negligible.

Gut microbial metalloproteins and its role in xenobiotics degradation and ROS scavenging

The gut microbial metalloenzymes play an important role in maintaining the balance between gut microbial ecosystem, human physiologically processes and immune system. The metals coordinated into active site contribute in various detoxification and defense strategies to avoid unfavourable environment and ensure bacterial survival in human gut. Metallo-β-lactamase is a potent degrader of antibiotics present in periplasmic space of both commensals and pathogenic bacteria. The resistance to anti-microbial agents developed in this enzyme is one of the global threats for human health. The organophosphorus eliminator, organophosphorus hydrolases have evolved over a course of time to hydrolyze toxic organophosphorus compounds and decrease its effect on human health. Further, the redox stress responders namely superoxide dismutase and catalase are key metalloenzymes in reducing both endogenous and exogenous oxidative stress. They hold a great importance for pathogens as they contribute in pathogenesis in human gut along with reduction of oxidative stress. The in-silico study on these enzymes reveals the importance of point mutation for the evolution of these enzymes in order to enhance their enzyme activity and stability. Various mutation studies were conducted to investigate the catalytic activity of these enzymes. By using the "directed evolution" method, the enzymes involved in detoxification and defense system can be engineered to produce new variants with enhance catalytic features, which may be used to predict the severity due to multi-drug resistance and degradation pattern of organophosphorus compounds in human gut.

Distribution patterns and origins of organophosphate esters in soils from different climate systems on the Tibetan Plateau

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively applied in various materials as flame retardants and plasticizers, and have high biological toxicity. OPEs are detected worldwide, even in distant polar regions and the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, few studies have been performed to evaluate the distribution patterns and origins of OPEs in different climate systems on the TP. This study investigated the distribution characteristics, possible sources, and ecological risks of OPEs in soils from the different climate systems on the TP and its surroundings. The total concentrations of OPEs in soil varied from 468 to 17,451 pg g-1 dry weight, with greater concentrations in southeast Tibet (monsoon zone), followed by Qinghai (transition zone) and, finally, southern Xingjiang (westerly zone). OPE composition profiles also differed among the three areas with tri-n-butyl phosphate dominant in the westerly zone and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate dominant in the Indian monsoon zone. Correlations between different compounds and altitude, soil organic carbon, or longitude varied in different climate zones, indicating that OPE distribution originates from both long-range atmospheric transport and local emissions. Ecological risk assessment showed that tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tri-phenyl phosphate exhibited medium risks in soil at several sites in southeast Tibet. Considering the sensitivity and vulnerability of TP ecosystems to anthropogenic pollutants, the ecological risks potentially caused by OPEs in this region should be further assessed.

Environmental exposures to organophosphorus flame retardants in early pregnancy and risks of gestational diabetes mellitus: a nested case-control study

OPFRs are emerging environmental pollutants with reproductive and endocrine toxicity. This study aimed to examine the association between environmental exposure to OPFRs during early pregnancy and GDM. This nested case-control study was based on a birth cohort that was constructed at a maternal and child health hospital, including 74 cases of GDM among 512 pregnant women. The OPFRs, including TBP, TBEP, TCEP, TDCPP, TMCP, TOCP, and TPHP during 10-14 weeks of pregnancy were determined using GC-MS. The association between the OPFRs and GDM was assessed using WQS and BKMR models. The levels of OPFRs were significantly elevated in GDM patients (60) compared with the controls (90). The WQS analysis showed that mixtures of the OPFRs were significantly associated with GDM (OR 1.370, 95% CI 1.036-1.810, P = 0.027), and TBP, TPHP, and TMCP were the major contributors to the mixed exposure effect. In the BKMR model, individual exposure to TBP, TPHP, and TMCP, and the interaction of TMCP with TBP and TPHP were significantly associated with GDM. Environmental exposure to OPFRs is positively associated with GDM. These findings provide evidence for the adverse effects of OPFR exposure on the health of pregnant women.

Distribution, traceability, and risk assessment of organophosphate flame retardants in agricultural soils along the Yangtze River Delta in China

Severe pollution threatens the ecosystem and human health in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in China because of the rapid development of industry in this area. This study examines the types, distribution, concentration, and origin of fourteen typical organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in agricultural soils within the YRD region to offer insights for pollutant control and policy-making. The total concentration of OPFRs (ΣOPFRs) varied between 79.19 and 699.58 μg/kg dry weight (dw), averaging at 209.61 μg/kg dw. Among the OPFRs detected, tributoxyethyl phosphate (TBEP) was identified as the main congener, followed by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP). Source analysis, conducted through correlation coefficients and PCA, indicated that OPFRs in agricultural soils within the YRD region mainly originate from emissions related to plastic products and transportation. The health risk exposure to ΣOPFRs in agricultural soil was considered negligible for farmers, with values below 1.24 × 10-2 and 1.76 × 10-9 for noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, respectively. However, the ecological risk of ΣOPFRs in all the samples ranged from 0.08-1.08, indicating a medium to high risk level. The results offer a comprehensive understanding of OPFR pollution in agricultural soils in the YRD region and can be useful for pollution control that mitigates ecological and health risks in this region.

Global Trends and Hotspots in Research on the Health Risks of Organophosphate Flame Retardants: A Bibliometric and Visual Analysis

BACKGROUND

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are compounds with a wide range of industrial and commercial applications and are mainly used as flame retardants and plasticizers. The global consumption of OPFRs has risen rapidly in recent decades, and they have been widely detected in environmental media. Unfortunately, OPFRs have been associated with many adverse health outcomes. The issue of the health risks of OPFRs is attracting increasing attention. Therefore, there is a need to review the current state of research and trends in this field to help researchers and policymakers quickly understand the field, identify new research directions, and allocate appropriate resources for further development of the OPFR health risk research field.

METHODS

This study statistically analyzed 1162 relevant publications included in the Web of Science Core Collection from 2003-2023. The internal and external features of the literature, such as publication trends, countries, authors, journals, and keywords, were quantitatively analyzed and visually presented to identify the research hotspots, compositions, and paradigms of the field and to horizontally and vertically analyze the development trends and structural evolution of the field.

RESULTS

The development of the field can be divided into three stages, and the field entered a period of rapid development in 2016. China (649 papers) is the most prolific country, followed by the United States (188 papers). The authors STAPLETON HM and WANG Y have the highest combined impact. International collaboration between countries and researchers still needs to be strengthened. Science of The Total Environment is the most frequently published journal (162 papers), and Environmental Science and Technology is the most frequently cited journal (5285 citations). Endocrine disruption, developmental toxicity, and neurotoxicity are the health effects of greatest interest.

CONCLUSIONS

Future research is expected to be multidisciplinary, and research hotspots may involve a comprehensive assessment of OPFR exposure in the population, exploration of the mechanisms of endocrine-disrupting effects and in vivo metabolic processes, and examination of the health effects of OPFR metabolites.

Exposure of male adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) induces eye development disorders and disrupts neurotransmitter system-mediated abnormal locomotor behavior in larval offspring

Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) is a widely used organophosphorus flame retardant, which has become ubiquitous in the environment. However, little information is available regarding its transgenerational effects. This study aimed to investigate the developmental toxicity of TPhP on F1 larvae offspring of adult male zebrafish exposed to various concentrations of TPhP for 28 or 60 days. The findings revealed significant morphological changes, alterations in locomotor behavior, variations in neurotransmitter, histopathological changes, oxidative stress levels, and disruption of Retinoic Acid (RA) signaling in the F1 larvae. After 28 and 60 days of TPhP exposure, the F1 larvae exhibited a myopia-like phenotype with pathological alterations in the lens and retina. The genes involved in the RA signaling pathway were down-regulated following parental TPhP exposure. Swimming speed and total distance of F1 larvae were significantly reduced by TPhP exposure, and long-term exposure to environmental levels of TPhP had more pronounced effects on locomotor behavior and neurotransmitter levels. In conclusion, TPhP induced histological and morphological alterations in the eyes of F1 larvae, leading to visual dysfunction, disruption of RA signaling and neurotransmitter systems, and ultimately resulting in neurobehavioral abnormalities. These findings highlight the importance of considering the impact of TPhP on the survival and population reproduction of wild larvae.

Co-occurrence of organophosphate diesters and organophosphate triesters in daily household products: Potential emission and possible human health risk

Eight paired organophosphate diesters (Di-OPs) and organophosphate triesters (Tri-OPs) were investigated in wipes from analytical instruments and 47 material samples related to household products, including textiles, electrical/electronic devices, building/ decoration materials and children's products. The total concentrations of Di-OPs ranged in 3577-95551 ng/m2 in the wipes and limit of detection-23002 ng/g in the materials. The Tri-OPs concentrations varied significantly in the ranges of 107218-1756892 ng/m2 and 2.13-503149 ng/g, respectively. Four industrial Di-OPs were detected in > 65% of the studied samples suggesting their direct application in the studied materials. Furthermore, we demonstrated for the first time that four non-industrial Di-OPs, e.g., bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate, and bis(butoxyethyl) phosphate, identified as degradation products of their respective Tri-OPs were also detected in these studied samples, which might act as important emission sources of Di-OPs in indoor environments. We estimated the burden of Di-OPs and Tri-OPs in a typical residential house and instrumental room, which both exhibited important contributions from furniture, building and decoration materials, and electrical/electronic devices. Limit health risk was posed to local people via air inhalation.

Influence of watershed characteristics and human activities on the occurrence of organophosphate esters related to dissolved organic matter in estuarine surface water

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widespread in aquatic environments and pose potential threats to ecosystem and human health. Here, we profiled OPEs in surface water samples of heavily urbanized estuaries in eastern China and investigated the influence of watershed characteristics and human activities on the spatial distribution of OPEs related to dissolved organic matter (DOM). The total OPE concentration ranged from 22.3 to 1201 ng/L, with a mean of 162.6 ± 179.8 ng/L. Chlorinated OPEs were the predominant contaminant group, accounting for 27.4-99.6 % of the total OPE concentration. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate, and tributyl phosphate were the dominant compounds, with mean concentrations of 111.2 ± 176.0 ng/L, 22.6 ± 21.5 ng/L, and 14.8 ± 14.9 ng/L, respectively. Variable OPE levels were observed in various functional areas, with significantly higher concentrations in industrial areas than in other areas. Potential source analysis revealed that sewage treatment plant effluents and industrial activities were the primary OPE sources. The total OPE concentrations were negatively correlated to the mean slope, plan curvature, and elevation, indicating that watershed characteristics play a role in the occurrence of OPEs. Individual OPEs (triisobutyl phosphate, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate, tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate, and tricresyl phosphate) and Σalkyl-OPEs were positively correlated to the night light index or population density, suggesting a significant contribution of human activity to OPE pollution. The co-occurrence of OPEs and DOM was also observed, and the fluorescence indices of DOM were found to be possible indicators for tracing OPEs. These findings can elucidate the potential OPE dynamics in response to DOM in urbanized estuarine water environments with intensive human activities.

A global review on the abundance and threats of microplastics in soils to terrestrial ecosystem and human health

Soil is the source and sink of microplastics (MPs), which is more polluted than water and air. In this paper, the pollution levels of MPs in the agriculture, roadside, urban and landfill soils were reviewed, and the influence of MPs on soil ecosystem, including soil properties, microorganisms, animals and plants, was discussed. According to the results of in vivo and in vitro experiments, the possible risks of MPs to soil ecosystem and human health were predicted. Finally, in light of the current status of MPs research, several prospects are provided for future research directions to better evaluate the ecological risk and human health risk of MPs. MPs concentrations in global agricultural soils, roadside soils, urban soils and landfill soils had a great variance in different studies and locations. The participation of MPs has an impact on all aspects of terrestrial ecosystems. For soil properties, pH value, bulk density, pore space and evapotranspiration can be changed by MPs. For microorganisms, MPs can alter the diversity and abundance of microbiome, and different MPs have different effects on bacteria and fungi differently. For plants, MPs may interfere with their biochemical and physiological conditions and produce a wide range of toxic effects, such as inhibiting plant growth, delaying or reducing seed germination, reducing biological and fruit yield, and interfering with photosynthesis. For soil animals, MPs can affect their mobility, growth rate and reproductive capacity. At present epidemiological evidences regarding MPs exposure and negative human health effects are unavailable, but in vitro and in vivo data suggest that they pose various threats to human health, including respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, endocrine system, nervous system, and circulation system. In conclusion, the existence and danger of MPs cannot be ignored and requires a global effort.

Interannual variation and machine learning simulation of organophosphate esters in Taihu Lake

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widespread in water bodies and have attracted public attention due to their hazards. This study investigated the presence of OPEs in surface water of Taihu Lake from 2012 and 2021-2022. The OPEs concentration was compared ten years ago and ten years later. Water and meteorological parameters were ranked using the random forest (RF) model, and OPEs concentration in lakes was simulated using selected parameters as inputs. The concentration of Σ7OPEs was higher ten years ago compared to ten years later. There was no significant seasonal difference in Σ7OPEs from 2021-2022, while the concentration of Σ7OPEs in 2012 was lower in summer than in other seasons. The spatial distribution of the two interannual Σ7OPEs exhibited a decreasing trend from the northwest region. The results of RF importance ranking and redundancy analysis showed that NH3-N, TN, TP, water temperature and relative humidity were the most influential factors affecting OPEs concentrations. RF models performed better for TnBP, as indicated by training R and test R values are excellent and relatively low errors. Our results demonstrated that machine learning models were useful in facilitating efficient monitoring and assessment of OPEs contamination in lakes.

An Initial Survey on Occurrence, Fate, and Environmental Risk Assessment of Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Romanian Waterways

Organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRs) are ubiquitous organic pollutants in the environment and present an important preoccupation due to their potential toxicity to humans and biota. They can be found in various sources, including consumer products, building materials, transportation industry, electronic devices, textiles and clothing, and recycling and waste management. This paper presents the first survey of its kind in Romania, investigating the composition, distribution, possible sources, and environmental risks of OPFRs in five wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the rivers receiving their effluents. Samples from WWTPs and surface waters were collected and subjected to extraction processes to determine the OPFRs using liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. All the target OPFRs were found in all the matrices, with the average concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 1422 ng/L in wastewater, 0.88 to 1851 ng/g dry weight (d.w.) in sewage sludge, and 0.73 to 1036 ng/L in surface waters. The dominant compound in all the cases was tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP). This study observed that the wastewater treatment process was inefficient, with removal efficiencies below 50% for all five WWTPs. The environmental risk assessment indicated that almost all the targeted OPFRs pose a low risk, while TDCPP, TCPP, and TMPP could pose a moderate risk to certain aquatic species. These findings provide valuable information for international pollution research and enable the development of pollution control strategies.
