Pore wettability for enhanced oil recovery, contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation: A review

Wettability, a fundamental property of porous surface, occupies a pivotal position in the fields of enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation. In this review, wettability and the related applications are systematically expounded from the perspectives of hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity and super-wettability. Four common measurement methods are generalized and categorized into contact angle method and ratio method, and influencing factors (temperature, the type and layer charge of matrix, the species and structure of modifier) as well as their corresponding altering methods (inorganic, organic and thermal modification etc.) of wettability are overviewed. Different roles of wettability alteration in enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption as well as oil/water separation are summarized. Among these applications, firstly, the hydrophilic alteration plays a key role in recovery of the oil production process; secondly, hydrophobic circumstance of surface drives the organic pollutant adsorption more effectually; finally, super-wetting property of matrix ensures the high-efficient separation of oil from water. This review also identifies importance, challenges and future prospects of wettability alteration, and as a result, furnishes the essential guidance for selection and design inspiration of the wettability modification, and supports the further development of pore wettability application.

Characterization of Tagaran natural clay and its efficiency for removal of cadmium (II) from Sulaymaniyah industrial zone sewage

The fine fraction of the Tagaran natural clay (TC) from the Kurdistan region of Iraq-Sulaimani was characterized and used to remove Cd ions from industrial swage. Using XRF, XRD, SEM, and FTIR, the dominant clay mineral of the Tagaran clay mineral was identified as saponite, with minor amounts of chlorite. The clay was examined for its efficiency to adsorb and remove (Cd²⁺) in the presence of other heavy metal contaminants from Sulaimani industrial zone sewage by a batch method. The effect of initial pH, equilibrium time, temperature, clay dosage, and Cd²⁺ concentration was studied. Results were evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Redlich-Peterson isotherms. The kinetics could be best fitted to pseudo-second-order reaction kinetic model. In addition, the activation energy and the amount of calculated and experimentally determined heavy metal loads were consistent. The thermodynamic studies showed spontaneous endothermic adsorption. The trioctahedral smectite (saponite) showed a good efficiency for the adsorption of Cd²⁺ from the real sample (up to 100%) which at least partly can be explained by cation exchange. Tagaran clay is a candidate material for the production of an adsorber material for removing Cd²⁺ from aqueous solutions.

Enhanced Cr(VI) removal from simulated electroplating rinse wastewater by amino-functionalized vermiculite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron

A novel amino-functionalized vermiculite (AVT)-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (AVT-nZVI) was successfully synthesized for Cr(VI) removal from simulated electroplating rinse wastewater. Since the agglomeration and oxidation of nZVI could be weakened and the reaction rate between Cr(VI) and nZVI could be enhanced for the novel AVT-nZVI, an efficient Cr(VI) removal could be achieved. The experimental results showed that 100% of Cr(VI) removal was obtained with AVT-nZVI, whereas only 87.5% was achieved by nZVI after reacting for 60 min with 20.0 mg L^-1 Cr(VI) (pH = 5.0). After four cycles, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by AVT-nZVI still maintained at above 70%, suggesting that AVT-nZVI exhibited a good performance of reusability. The stability of AVT-nZVI particles was better than nZVI, which was confirmed by the steady-state polarization measurements. Furthermore, the removal of Cr(VI) by AVT-nZVI was proved to be in accordance with the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and Langmuir model. Based on the experiments and characterization, the reaction mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by AVT-nZVI was clarified. The protonated amino groups (-NH₃⁺) on the AVT promoted negative Cr(VI) species to be adsorbed on AVT-nZVI surface. Besides, Cr(VI) was reduced by Fe (0) to Cr(III), which was eventually adsorbed on the surface of AVT-nZVI particles as the Cr(III)-Fe(III) co-precipitates.
