A Review of Nonbiodegradable and Biodegradable Composites for Food Packaging Application

The dependency on nonbiodegradable-based food packaging, increase in population growth, and persistent environmental problems are some of the driving forces in considering the development of biodegradable food packaging. This effort of green packaging has the potential to solve issues on plastic wastes through the combination of biodegradable composite-based food packaging with plant extracts, nanomaterials, or other types of polymer. Modified biodegradable materials have provided numerous alternatives for producing green packaging with mechanical strength, thermal stability, and barrier performance that are comparable to the conventional food packaging. To the best of our knowledge, the performance of nonbiodegradable and biodegradable composites as food packaging in terms of the above properties has not yet been reviewed. In this context, the capability of biodegradable polymers to substitute the nonbiodegradable polymers was emphasized to enhance the packaging biodegradation while retaining the mechanical strength, thermal stability, barrier properties, and antioxidant and antimicrobial or antibacterial activity. These are the ultimate goal in the food industry. This review will impart useful information on the properties of food packaging developed from different polymers and future outlook toward the development of green food packaging.

Cellulose Nanocrystal Reinforced Chitosan Based UV Barrier Composite Films for Sustainable Packaging

In this study, green composite films based on cellulose nanocrystal/chitosan (CNC/CS) were fabricated by solution casting. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM characterizations were conducted to determine the structure and morphology of the prepared films. The addition of only 4 wt.% CNC in the CS film improved the tensile strength and Young's modulus by up to 39% and 78%, respectively. Depending on CNC content, the moisture absorption decreased by 34.1-24.2% and the water solubility decreased by 35.7-26.5% for the composite films compared with neat CS film. The water vapor permeation decreased from 3.83 × 10-11 to 2.41 × 10-11 gm-1 s-1Pa-1 in the CS-based films loaded with (0-8 wt.%) CNC. The water and UV barrier properties of the composite films showed better performance than those of neat CS film. Results suggested that CNC/CS nanocomposite films can be used as a sustainable packaging material in the food industry.

Properties of Conductive Polyacrylonitrile Fibers Prepared by Using Benzoxazine Modified Carbon Black

Composites of carbon black (CB) and polymers are attractive for producing conductive fibers. Herein, to achieve improved interactions with polymers, the surface of CB was modified to form 4-aminobenzoyl-functionalized carbon black (ABCB), benzoxazine-functionalized carbon black (BZCB), and Ag-anchored carbon black (Ag-ABCB). The surface-modified CBs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was utilized to confirm the presence of Ag in Ag-ABCB. Conductive polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers were wet-spun with conductive fillers (CB, ABCB, Ag-ABCB, and BZCB) to investigate the effects of various functional groups on the electrical and mechanical properties. After annealing the conductive PAN fibers, the conductivity and tensile strength greatly increased, whereas the diameter decreased. Notably, the fiber with a BZCB/PAN weight ratio of 12/88 possessed a conductivity of 8.9 × 10⁻⁴ S/cm, and strength of 110.4 MPa, and thus the highest conductivity and best mechanical properties in the conductive PAN fiber. These results indicate that the annealed BZCB/PAN fibers have potential applications in the manufacturing of antistatic fabrics.
