Advances in amelioration of plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings on biodegradable magnesium and alloys

Magnesium and its alloys are considered excellent materials for biodegradable implants because of their good biocompatibility and biodegradability as well as their mechanical properties. However, the rapid degradation rate severely limits their clinical applications. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), also known as micro-arc oxidation (MAO), is an effective surface modification technique. However, there are many pores and cracks on the coating surface under conventional PEO process. The corrosive products tend to penetrate deeply into the substrate, reducing its corrosion resistance and the biocompatibility, which makes PEO-coated Mg difficult to meet the long-term needs of in vivo implants. Hence, it is necessary to modify the PEO coating. This review discusses the formation mechanism and the influential parameters of PEO coatings on Mg. This is followed by a review of the latest research of the pretreatment and typical amelioration of PEO coating on biodegradable Mg alloys in the past 5 years, including calcium phosphate (Ca-P) coating, layered double hydroxide (LDH)-PEO coating, ZrO2 incorporated-PEO coating, antibacterial ingredients-PEO coating, drug-PEO coating, polymer-PEO composite coating, Plasma electrolytic fluorination (PEF) coating and self-healing coating. Meanwhile, the improvements of morphology, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, biocompatibility, antibacterial abilities, and drug loading abilities and the preparation methods of the modified PEO coatings are deeply discussed as well. Finally, the challenges and prospects of PEO coatings are discussed in detail for the purpose of promoting the clinical application of biodegradable Mg alloys.

2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets in protective coatings: A literature review

The layered 2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets (BNNSs) have received significant attention as effective fillers for composite protective coatings in anti-corrosion, anti-oxidation and anti-wear applications. Vapour deposited h-BN mono/multilayers are related classes well-recognized as protective thin films and coatings. This review comprehensively accounts for the research and development of BNNSs in protective coatings. Chemical vapour deposited (CVD) BN thin films and exfoliated BNNSs-incorporated composite polymer coatings are primarily discussed. Inorganic and nanocarbon-based composite coatings are also covered. Future research potentials are presented.

Advances in the Modification of Silane-Based Sol-Gel Coating to Improve the Corrosion Resistance of Magnesium Alloys

As the lightest structural materials, magnesium (Mg) alloys play a significant role in vehicle weight reduction, aerospace, military equipment, energy saving, and emission reduction. However, the poor corrosion resistance of Mg alloys has become a bottleneck restricting its wide application. Developing a good surface protective coating can effectively improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. The silane-based sol-gel coating technology has been widely used in the corrosion protection of Mg alloys in recent years due to its advantages of simple process, accessible tailoring of film composition and structure, and excellent corrosion resistance. Whereas the synthesis of sol-gel coatings includes the hydrolysis and dehydration process, which may inherently contain micron or nano defects in the coatings, thereby making it detrimental to the anti-corrosion effect. Therefore, in order to enhance their protection against corrosion, the appropriate modification of sol-gel coatings has become a current research hotspot. This review is based on the modification methods of silane-based sol-gels on the surface of Mg alloys, which are divided into four categories: bare sol-gel, nanoparticles, corrosion inhibitors, and sol-gel-based composite coatings. The modification methods and corrosion protection mechanism are discussed respectively, and the application, development, and research strategies of silane-based sol-gel coatings are included.

Bio-inspired and metal-derived superwetting surfaces: Function, stability and applications

Due to their exceptional anti-icing, anti-corrosion, and anti-drag qualities, biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces, which are widely employed in the aerospace, automotive, electronic, and biomedical industries, have raised significant concern. However, further applications in other domains have been hampered by the poor mechanical and chemical durability of superwetting metallic surfaces, which can result in metal fatigue and corrosion. The potential for anti-corrosion, anti-contamination, anti-icing, oil/water separation, and oil transportation on surfaces with superwettability has increased in recent years due to the advancement of research in biomimetic superwetting interface theory and practice. Recent developments in functionalized biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces were summarized in this paper. Firstly, a detailed presentation of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces with unique capabilities was made. The problems with the long-term mechanical and chemical stability of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces were then examined, along with potential solutions. Finally, in an effort to generate fresh concepts for the study of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces, the applications of superwetting metallic surfaces in various domains were discussed in depth. The future direction of biomimetic metal-derived superwetting surfaces was also addressed.

Effects of Temperature and Pressure on Corrosion Behavior of HVOF-Sprayed Fe-Based Amorphous Coating on the Mg-RE Alloy for Dissolvable Plugging Tools

To retard the degradation of the magnesium alloys for dissolvable ball seats, Fe-based amorphous coatings were deposited on dissolvable Mg-RE alloy substrates using high velocity oxygen-fuel spraying technology. The results show that the Fe-based amorphous coatings possess low porosity (0.82%) and high amorphous contents (91.4%) and their corrosion resistance decreases with the increase of temperature or pressure. However, with the help of Fe-based amorphous coatings, the degradation time of dissolvable Mg-RE alloy has been significantly prolonged. In particular, the service life of coated Mg-RE alloy exceeds 360 h at temperatures below 50 °C and reaches 87 h at 120 °C and 80 atm. Under high temperature and high pressure, the compactness of passive films decreases and the chemical activities of ions and metal elements increase, leading to the degradation of corrosion resistance of Fe-based amorphous coatings. In long-term corrosion, the crystallized splats are prone to corrosion because of the multiphase structures. The corroded crystallized splats are connected to the inevitable pores by the corroded intersplat regions, resulting in the formation of corrosion channels and the corrosion failure of coatings. This study provides a useful guidance for the corrosion protection of dissolvable plugging tools made of magnesium alloys.

Progress in bioactive surface coatings on biodegradable Mg alloys: A critical review towards clinical translation

Mg and its alloys evince strong candidature for biodegradable bone implants, cardiovascular stents, and wound closing devices. However, their rapid degradation rate causes premature implant failure, constraining clinical applications. Bio-functional surface coatings have emerged as the most competent strategy to fulfill the diverse clinical requirements, besides yielding effective corrosion resistance. This article reviews the progress of biodegradable and advanced surface coatings on Mg alloys investigated in recent years, aiming to build up a comprehensive knowledge framework of coating techniques, processing parameters, performance measures in terms of corrosion resistance, adhesion strength, and biocompatibility. Recently developed conversion and deposition type surface coatings are thoroughly discussed by reporting their essential therapeutic responses like osteogenesis, angiogenesis, cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, anti-bacterial, and controlled drug release towards in-vitro and in-vivo study models. The challenges associated with metallic, ceramic and polymeric coatings along with merits and demerits of various coatings have been illustrated. The use of multilayered hybrid coating comprising a unique combination of organic and inorganic components has been emphasized with future perspectives to obtain diverse bio-functionalities in a facile single coating system for orthopedic implant applications.

Chromate-Free Corrosion Protection Strategies for Magnesium Alloys-A Review: PART I-Pre-Treatment and Conversion Coating

Corrosion protection systems based on hexavalent chromium are traditionally perceived to be a panacea for many engineering metals including magnesium alloys. However, bans and strict application regulations attributed to environmental concerns and the carcinogenic nature of hexavalent chromium have driven a considerable amount of effort into developing safer and more environmentally friendly alternative techniques that provide the desired corrosion protection performance for magnesium and its alloys. Part I of this review series considers the various pre-treatment methods as the earliest step involved in the preparation of Mg surfaces for the purpose of further anti-corrosion treatments. The decisive effect of pre-treatment on the corrosion properties of both bare and coated magnesium is discussed. The second section of this review covers the fundamentals and performance of conventional and state-of-the-art conversion coating formulations including phosphate-based, rare-earth-based, vanadate, fluoride-based, and LDH. In addition, the advantages and challenges of each conversion coating formulation are discussed to accommodate the perspectives on their application and future development. Several auspicious corrosion protection performances have been reported as the outcome of extensive ongoing research dedicated to the development of conversion coatings, which can potentially replace hazardous chromium(VI)-based technologies in industries.

Natural Coatings and Surface Modifications on Magnesium Alloys for Biomedical Applications

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have great potential in biomedical applications due to their incomparable properties regarding other metals, such as stainless steels, Co-Cr alloys, and titanium (Ti) alloys. However, when Mg engages with body fluids, its degradation rate increases, inhibiting the complete healing of bone tissue. For this reason, it has been necessary to implement protective coatings to control the rate of degradation. This review focuses on natural biopolymer coatings used on Mg alloys for resorbable biomedical applications, as well as some modification techniques implemented before applying natural polymer coatings to improve their performance. Issues such as improving the corrosion resistance, cell adhesion, proliferation, and biodegradability of natural biopolymers are discussed through their basic comparison with inorganic-type coatings. Emphasis is placed on the expected biological behavior of each natural polymer described, to provide basic information as a reference on this topic.

Performance of PEO/Polymer Coatings on the Biodegradability, Antibacterial Effect and Biocompatibility of Mg-Based Materials

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have recently attracted attention in biomedicine as biodegradable materials with non-toxic degradable products. Such compounds have become a frontier in the study of biodegradable materials because of their remarkable biomechanical compatibility and superior biocompatibility. The use of Mg-based implants reduces the negative consequences of permanent biological implants by eliminating the necessity for biomaterial surgery following the healing process. However, the quick deterioration, formation of considerable gas of hydrogen volumes and a rise in the body environment pH are obstacles in the application of Mg as an implant material. Hence, compelling advances for erosion resistance and biocompatibility of magnesium and its alloys are noteworthy. Surface modification may be a practical approach because it improves the erosion resistance compared with extensive preparation of a treated surface for progressed bone recovery and cell attachment. Coating produced by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) seems a compelling method in order to enhance magnesium and the properties of its alloys. PEO-formed coatings cannot provide long-term protection in the physiological environment due to their porous nature. Thus, a polymer coating is applied on the porous PEO-formed coating, which is steadily applied on the surface. Polymer coatings improve the biocompatibility properties of Mg and its alloys and increase corrosion resistance. In this article, the most recent advancements in PEO/polymer composite coatings are reviewed, and the biocompatibility of such coatings is examined.

Structuring of Surface Films Formed on Magnesium in Hot Chlorobenzotriazole Vapors

Chamberprotection of metals from atmospheric corrosion is a variety of vapor-phase inhibition. It is based on the effect of adsorption films formed in the vapors of low-volatile corrosion inhibitors at elevated temperatures. The paper analyzes the specific features of the chamber protection of a magnesium alloy with chlorobenzotriazole. It has been found that the protective properties of surface films formed in hot vapors of this compound increase upon exposure of the metal to air. The processes of structuring of protective films that occur in this case have been studied by a set of corrosion, electrochemical and physical methods. It has been shown that chamber treatment of the alloy is accompanied by chlorobenzotriazole adsorption and uniform thickening of the surface oxide-hydroxide layer. In this case, the corrosion processes slow down by a factor of up to 10. Prolonged exposure of the samples in air after the chamber treatment results in additional oxidation of magnesium and hydroxylation of the oxide. However, the oxide-hydroxide layer does not grow on the entire surface, but as separate islets. Such a change in the structure of the surface films results in an additional 10-fold increase in the corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy.

Traditional Chinese medicine extracts as novel corrosion inhibitors for AZ91 magnesium alloy in saline environment

Zingiber officinale Roscoe extract, Raphanus sativus L. extract, Rheum palmatum extract, Coptis chinensis extract, Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract (GUE), Potentilla discolor extract (PDE) and Taraxacum officinale extract (TOE) were screened for the green corrosion inhibitors of AZ91 alloy in saline environment. The experiment results demonstrated that GUE, PDE and TOE can significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of AZ91 alloy by 73.4, 87.6 and 84.6%, respectively. Surface characterization using FTIR, UV–Vis and XPS revealed that the organic compounds of GUE, PDE and TOE can interact with the alloy surface to form a protective physisorbed film, effectively mitigating the corrosion process of AZ91 alloy. The present results may be helpful to discover the new green inhibitors with high inhibition efficiency for AZ91 alloy.

Understanding the Corrosion Behavior of the AZ91D Alloy in Simulated Body Fluid through the Use of Dynamic EIS

Dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (dynamic EIS) has the capacity to track changes on surfaces in a changing corrosive system, an advantage it holds over classical EIS. We used the dynamic EIS approach to provide insight into the corrosion behavior of the AZ91D Mg alloy in simulated body fluid for 30 h at 25 °C. The results reveal that the impedance response of the alloy is influenced by the immersion time. Between 0 and 7 h, impedance with three time constants was obtained, whereas two-time-constant impedance spectra were obtained between 8 and 30 h of immersion. The results confirm the breakdown of the corrosion product at longer immersion times.

Improved Corrosion Resistance of Magnesium Alloy AZ31 in Ringer Lactate by Bilayer Anodic Film/Beeswax–Colophony

A bilayer anodic film/beeswax–colophony is proposed for improving the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy surface. The bilayer was synthesized on the AZ31 alloy by anodization and subsequent dip coating, and the corrosion behavior was investigated by electrochemical measurements and weight loss test in Ringer lactate at 37 °C. The bilayer improved the electrochemical corrosion resistance by four orders of magnitude, as demonstrated by ~104 times lower corrosion current density in the polarization curves and ~104 higher film resistance in the impedance spectra. The tremendous surface area of the porous anodic film led to a strong attachment of the topcoat beeswax–colophony. Most of the coating remained attached to the surface after 14 days soaking in Ringer lactate. A few small blisters developed under the bilayer contributed to the low mass loss of 0.07 mg/cm2/day compared to the bare substrate, with an average loss rate of 0.25 mg/cm2/day. Local detachment of topcoat layer exposed the underlying anodic film that triggered the deposition of Ca and further nucleation of the Ca–P compound on the surface. The existence of a Ca−P compound with a Ca/P ratio of 1.68 indicated the ability of the bilayer to promote the formation of bone mineral apatite.

Superhydrophobic surfaces and coatings by electrochemical anodic oxidation and plasma electrolytic oxidation

The review provides a comprehensive account of superhydrophobic surfaces fabricated by electrochemical anodic oxidation (anodization). First, reported works on superhydrophobic polymers and metals made by using anodized metal oxide porous templates as moulds are presented (section 2). The next section provides a detailed description of the different fabrication approaches of superhydrophobic surfaces on anodized metallic substrates (section 3.1). The published information on superhydrophobic anodized surfaces in various applications, viz. anti-corrosion, anti-icing, oil separation, and biomedical are systematically covered (section 3.2). Superhydrophobic surfaces fabricated by plasma electrolytic oxidation are also presented (section 4). Future research perspectives debated. The collective information provided is helpful to further advance R & D in making pioneering superhydrophobic anodized nanoporous surfaces.

Influence of Rare Earth Element (Y) on Microstructure and Corrosion Behavior of Hot Extrusion AZ91 Magnesium Alloy

The influence of rare earth element (RE) Y on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of extruded AZ91 Mg alloy was surveyed via morphology characterization and corrosion performance measurements. The results indicate the corrosion resistance of the transversal section of AZ91 Mg alloy containing Y was improved compared with AZ91 Mg alloy without Y. The corrosion resistance of the longitudinal section of AZ91 Mg alloy with Y was lower than that of AZ91 Mg alloy without Y. The change of corrosion resistance can be attributed to the dispersion and volume fraction of the second phase, the effect of cathodic reduction rate, and the refined second phase.
