Abstract
The reconstruction of maxillofacial defects caused by anomalies, fractures, or cancer is challenging for dentofacial surgeons. To produce efficient, patient-specific implants with long-term performance and biological suitability, numerous methods of manufacturing are utilized. Because additive manufacturing makes it possible to fabricate complex pore structure samples, it is now recognized as an acceptable option to design customized implants. It is well recognized that a porous structure with proper design promotes accelerated cell proliferation, which enhances bone remodeling. Porosity can also be employed to modify the mechanical characteristics of fabricated implants. Thus, design and choice of rational lattice structure is an important task. The influence of the structure of jaw implants made of highly porous titanium-based materials on their mechanical properties and bone tissue growth was studied. Based on a 3D computer model of Wigner-Seitz lattice structure, the model samples were fabricated from Ti6Al4V powder by selective laser melting to characterize the mechanical properties of the samples depending on their macroporosity. Then two types of jaw bone implants were manufactured to conduct studies of bone tissue ingrowth when implanted in laboratory animals. The research was carried out in several stages: design and production of the implants for replacing incomplete defects of the lower jaw; implantation of SLM-printed implants in laboratory animals into an artificially produced defect of the lower jaw; analysis of the degree of fixation of the "implant - bone" connection (for implantation periods from 2 weeks to 9 months). During the research, Ti-alloy structures with cell diameters of 2-3 mm and macroporosity of 90-97% mimicking the spongy structure of trabecular bone tissue, were characterized by a compressive strength of 12.47-37.5 MPa and an elastic modulus of 0.19-1.23 GPa, corresponding to the mechanical properties of bone tissue. Active processes of tissue growth into implant cells were detected 2 weeks after implantation, the significant differences in the volume and types of filling tissue depending on the size of the cell were described. Recommendations for choosing the cell size depending on the type of bone tissue damage were given. When using SLM-printed implants with lattice structure (cell sizes from 1 to 3 mm), an active osteosynthesis processes occurred, which culminated in the formation of bone tissue inside the implant cells 9 months after implantation, with 68% of the samples characterized by the maximum degree of implant fixation. Implants with 3 mm cells with macropores diameters of 850 μm were recommended for replacing cavities after removal of perihilar cysts. To replace complete and partial defects, it was recommended to use implants with a cell size of 2 and 3 mm.

Abstract
Bone structures facilitate the regeneration and repair of bone tissue in regions where it has been damaged or destroyed, either temporarily or permanently. Therefore, the bone's fatigue strength and durability are crucial to its efficacy and longevity. Several variables, such as the construct's material qualities, design, and production procedure, loading and unloading cycles, and physiological conditions influence the endurance life of bone constructs. Metals, ceramics, and polymers are all routinely utilized to create bone substitutes, and each of these materials has unique features that might affect the fatigue strength and endurance life of the final product. The mechanical performance and capacity to promote bone tissue regeneration may be affected by the scaffold's design, porosity, and pore size. Researchers employ mechanical testing under cyclic loading circumstances as one example of an experimental approach used to assess bone construction endurance. These analyses can give us important information about the stress-strain behavior, resistance to multiple loading cycles, and fatigue strength of the new structure. Predicting the endurance life of the developed construct may also be possible with the use of simulations and numerical analyses. Hence, in order to create reliable and efficient constructs for bone tissue engineering, it is crucial to understand their fatigue strength and durability. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effective parameters for fatigue strength of bone structures and to gather the models and evaluations utilized in endurance life assessments.

Abstract
Cellular materials offer industries the ability to close gaps in the material selection design space with properties not otherwise achievable by bulk, monolithic counterparts. Their superior specific strength, stiffness, and energy absorption, as well as their multi-functionality, makes them desirable for a wide range of applications. The objective of this paper is to compile and present a review of the open literature focusing on the energy absorption of periodic three-dimensional cellular materials. The review begins with the methodical cataloging of qualitative and quantitative elements from 100 papers in the available literature and then provides readers with a thorough overview of the state of this research field, discussing areas such as parent material(s), manufacturing methods, cell topologies, cross-section shapes for truss topologies, analysis methods, loading types, and test strain rates. Based on these collected data, areas of great and limited research are identified and future avenues of interest are suggested for the continued maturation and growth of this field, such as the development of a consistent naming and classification system for topologies; the creation of test standards considering additive manufacturing processes; further investigation of non-uniform and non-cylindrical struts on the performance of truss lattices; and further investigation into the performance of lattice materials under the impact of non-flat surfaces and projectiles. Finally, the numerical energy absorption (by mass and by volume) data of 76 papers are presented across multiple property selection charts, highlighting various materials, manufacturing methods, and topology groups. While there are noticeable differences at certain densities, the graphs show that the categorical differences within those groups have large overlap in terms of energy absorption performance and can be referenced to identify areas for further investigation and to help in the preliminary design process by researchers and industry professionals alike.

Abstract
The use of uncemented stems in hip arthroplasty has been increasing, even in osteoporotic patients. The major concerns of uncemented hip-stems, however, are peri-prosthetic fracture, thigh pain, and proximal femoral stress-/strain-shielding. In this study, a novel design of uncemented hip-stem is proposed that will reduce such concerns, improve osseointegration, and benefit both osteoporotic and arthritic patients. The stem has a central titanium alloy core surrounded by a set of radial buttresses that are partly porous titanium, as is the stem tip. The aim of the study was to investigate the mechanical behaviour of the proposed partly-porous design, examining load transfer in the short-term, and comparing its strain-shielding behaviour with a solid metal implant. The long-term effect of implant-induced bone remodelling was also simulated. Computed tomography based three-dimensional finite element models of an intact proximal femur, and the same femur implanted with the proposed design, were developed. Peak hip contact and major muscle forces corresponding to level-walking and stair climbing were applied. The proposed partly-porous design had approximately 50% lower strain-shielding than the solid-metal counterpart. Results of bone remodelling simulation indicated that only 16% of the total bone volume is subjected to reduction of bone density. Strain concentrations were observed in the bone around the stem-tip for both solid and porous implants; however, it was less prominent for the porous design. Lower strain-shielding and reduced bone resorption are advantageous for long-term fixation, and the reduced strain concentration around the stem-tip indicates a lower risk of peri-prosthetic fracture.

Abstract
In recent years, the field of mandibular reconstruction has made great strides in terms of hardware innovations and their clinical applications. There has been considerable interest in using computer-aided design, finite element modelling, and additive manufacturing techniques to build patient-specific surgical implants. Moreover, lattice implants can mimic mandibular bone's mechanical and structural properties. This article reviews current approaches for mandibular reconstruction, their applications, and their drawbacks. Then, we discuss the potential of mandibular devices with lattice structures, their development and applications, and the challenges for their use in clinical settings.

Abstract
The overview describes the synergy between biological sciences and cellular structures processed by additive manufacturing to elucidate the significance of cellular structured implants in eliminating stress shielding and in meeting the bio-mechanical property requirements of elastic modulus, impact resistance, and fatigue strength in conjunction with the biological functionality. The convergence of additive manufacturing, computer-aided design, and structure-property relationships is envisaged to provide the solution to the current day challenges in the biomedical arena. The traditional methods of fabrication of biomedical devices including casting and mechanical forming have limitations because of the mismatch in micro/microstructure, mechanical, and physical properties with the host site. Additive manufacturing of cellular structured alloys via electron beam melting and laser powder bed fusion has benefits of fabricating patient-specific design that is obtained from the computed tomography scan of the defect site. The discussion in the overview consists of two aspects - the first one describes the underlying reason that motivated 3D printing of implants from the perspective of minimising stress shielding together with the mechanical property requirements, where the mechanical properties of cellular structured implants depend on the cellular architecture and percentage cellular porosity. The second aspect focuses on the biological response of cellular structured devices.

Abstract
Multiple surface treatment methods for titanium alloy prostheses, widely used in orthopedics, are available; however, these can affect bone integration and regeneration efficiency. In this study, through cell and animal experiments, we devised seven bone implant categories of Ti6Al4V based on surface preparation and post-processing technology (polishing, grit-blasting, fine titanium spraying, coarse titanium spraying, electron beam melting [EBM] printing, selective laser melting [SLM] printing, and post-processed SLM printing) and imaged each microscopic surface structure with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mechanical testing revealed excessive post-processing damaged the mechanical properties of the implants. In vitro, human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) were cultured with implants, and the morphology of the cells adhering to the implant surface was observed using SEM and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) semi-quantitatively determined cell activity, indirectly reflecting the proliferation of hBMSCs. Alizarin red and alkaline phosphatase experiments assessed osteogenic differentiation. In vivo, experiments utilized the New Zealand rabbit femoral condyle bone defect model to assess bone regeneration and integration using micro-computed tomography, Van Giesen staining, and Masson staining. We found that 3D-printed implants with regular pore structures were more conducive to hBMSC osteogenic differentiation, while the presence of metal powder on NPT-SLM-printed implants hindered such differentiation. The post-treatment SLM scaffold surface may have some residual semi-melted powder; however, these powder residues have no significant effect on cell activity and differentiation. Surface treatment (grit-blasting and titanium spraying) of planar structures can enhance hBMSC adhesion but does not necessarily promote their differentiation. The framework structure of 3D printing may affect the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs, and for SLM-printed implants, excessive pursuit of a "powderless" state will damage the mechanical properties of the implant.

Abstract
One of the applications of mechanical metamaterials is in car tires, as a non-pneumatic tire (NPT). Therefore, to find a suitable cell to replace the pneumatic part of the tire, three different solution methods were used, including topology optimization of the cubic unit cell, cylindrical unit cell, and fatigue testing cylindrical sample (FTCS). First, to find the mechanical properties, a tensile test was conducted for materials made of polylactic acid (PLA) and then, the optimization was done based on the weight and overhang control for the possibility of manufacturing with 3D printers, as constraints, besides, the objective of minimum compliance. In the optimization of the cubic unit cell, the sample with a minimum remaining weight of 35% was selected as the optimal sample. However, for the cylindrical unit cell, a sample with a weight limit of 20% was the most optimal state. In contrast, in the FTCS optimization, a specimen with lower remaining weight equal to 60% of the initial weight was selected. After obtaining the answer, five cells in the FTCS and two mentioned cells were evaluated under compressive testing. The samples were also subjected to bending fatigue loadings. The results demonstrated that cellular structures with 15% of lower weight than the optimized samples had the same fatigue lifetime. In the compressive test, the line slope of the specimens with cellular structures in the elastic region of the force-displacement diagram was reduced by 37%, compared to the completely solid samples. However, the weight of these samples decreased by 59%. Furthermore, the fracture surface was also investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that a weak connection between the layers was the cause of failure.

Abstract
Porous tantalum (Ta) scaffolds have been extensively used in the clinic for reconstructing bone tissues owing to their outstanding corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, osteointegration, osteoconductivity, and mechanical properties. Additive manufacturing (AM) has an advantage in fabricating patient-specific and anatomical-shape-matching bone implants with controllable and well-designed porous architectures through tissue engineering. The sharp angles of strut joints in porous structures can cause stress concentration, reducing mechanical properties of the structures. In this study, porous Ta scaffolds comprising rhombic dodecahedron lattice unit cells with optimized node radius and porosities of 65%, 75%, and 85% were designed and fabricated by AM. The porous architecture and microstructure were characterized. The compressive behavior and failure mechanism of the material were explored through experimental compression tests and finite element analysis (FEA). Morphological evaluations revealed that the Ta scaffolds are fully interconnected, and the struts are dense. No processing defects and fractures were observed on the surface of struts. The scaffolds exhibited compressive yield strength of 5.8-32.3 MPa and elastic modulus of 0.6-4.5 GPa, comparable to those of human cancellous and trabecular bone. The compressive stress-strain curves of all samples show ductile deformation behavior accompanied by a smooth plateau region. The AM-fabricated rhombic dodecahedron lattice Ta scaffolds exhibited excellent ductility and mechanical reliability and plastic failure due to bending deformation under compressive loading. Deformation and factures primarily occurred at the junctions of the rhombus-arranged struts in the longitudinal section. Moreover, the struts in the middle of the scaffolds underwent a larger deformation than those close to the loading ends. FEA revealed a smooth stress distribution on the rhombic dodecahedron lattice structure with optimized node radius and stress concentration at the junctions of rhombus-arranged struts in the longitudinal section, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. Thus, the AM-fabricated Ta scaffolds with optimized node radius are promising alternatives for bone repair and regeneration.

Abstract
Porous structured metallic implants are preferable as bone graft substitutes due to their faster tissue integration mediated by bone in-growth and vascularization. The porous scaffolds/implants should also mimic the graded structure of natural bone to ensure a match of mechanical properties. This article presents a method for designing a graded porous structured acetabular implant and identifies suitable parameters for manufacturing the model through additive manufacturing. The design method is based on slice-wise modification to ensure continuity of gradation. Modification of the slices was achieved through the binary image processing route. A geodesic dome-type design was adopted for developing the acetabular cup model from the graded porous structure. The model had a solid shell with the target porosity and pore size gradually changing from 65% and 950 µm, respectively, in the inner side to 75% and 650 µm, respectively, towards the periphery. The required dimensions of the unit structures and the combinations of pore structure and strut diameter necessary to obtain the target porosity and pore size were determined analytically. Suitable process parameters were identified to manufacture the model by Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) using Ti6Al4V powder after carrying out a detailed experimental study to minimize the variation of surface roughness and warping over different build angles of the strut structures. Dual-contour scanning was implemented to simplify the scan strategy. The minimum diameter of struts that could be manufactured using the selected scanning strategy and scanning parameters was found to be 375 µm. Finally, the model was built and from the micro-CT data, the porosities and pore sizes were found to be closely conforming to the designed values. The stiffness of the structures, as found from compression testing, was also found to match with that of human trabecular bone well. Further, the structure exhibited compliant bending-dominated behaviour under compressive loading.

Abstract
Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) has a promising application in the design of bone scaffolds due to its relevance in bone structure. Notably, the mechanical properties of TPMS scaffolds can be affected by many factors, including the spatial angle and surface curvature, which, however, remain to be discovered. This paper illustrates our study on the mechanical properties of tissue scaffolds consisting of TPMS structures (Primitive and I-WP) by considering the influence of spatial angle and surface curvature. Also, the development of a novel model representative of the mechanical properties of scaffolds based on the entropy weight fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is also presented. For experimental investigation and validation, we employed the selective laser melting technology to manufacture scaffolds with varying structures from AlSi10Mg powder and then performed mechanical testing on the scaffolds. Our results show that for a given porosity, the Gaussian curvature of the stretched TPMS structures is more concentrated and have a higher elastic modulus and fatigue life. At the spatial angle θ = 27°, the shear modulus of the primitive unit reaches its largest value; the shear modulus of the I-WP unit is positively correlated with the spatial angle. Additionally, it is found that the comprehensive mechanical properties of TPMS structures can be significantly improved after changing the surface curvature. Taken together, the identified influence of spatial angle and surface curvature and the developed models of scaffold mechanical properties would be of significant advance and guidance for the design and development of bone scaffolds.

Abstract
Bone replacement using porous and solid metallic implants, such as Ti-alloy implants, is regarded as one of the most practical therapeutic approaches in biomedical engineering. The bone is a complex tissue with various mechanical properties based on the site of action. Patient-specific Ti-6Al-4V constructs may address the key needs in bone treatment for having customized implants that mimic the complex structure of the natural tissue and diminish the risk of implant failure. This review focuses on the most promising methods of fabricating such patient-specific Ti-6Al-4V implants using additive manufacturing (AM) with a specific emphasis on the popular subcategory, which is powder bed fusion (PBF). Characteristics of the ideal implant to promote optimized tissue-implant interactions, as well as physical, mechanical/chemical treatments and modifications will be discussed. Accordingly, such investigations will be classified into 3B-based approaches (Biofunctionality, Bioactivity, and Biostability), which mainly govern native body response and ultimately the success in implantation.

Abstract
Additively manufactured biodegradable zinc (Zn) alloy scaffolds constitute an important branch in orthopedic implants because of their moderate degradation behavior and bone-mimicking mechanical properties. This work investigated the corrosion fatigue response of a zinc-magnesium (Zn-Mg) alloy gyroid scaffold fabricated via laser-powder-bed-fusion additive manufacturing at the first time. The high-cycle compression-compression fatigue testing of the printed Zn-Mg scaffold was conducted in simulated body fluid, showing its favorable fatigue strength, structural reliability, and anti-fatigue capability. The printed Zn-Mg scaffold obtained a 227% higher fatigue strength than that of the printed Zn scaffold but 17% lower strain accumulation at 106 cycles. The accumulative strain of the Zn-Mg scaffold at its fatigue strength was dominant by fatigue ratcheting, since the fatigue damage strain of the scaffold was approximately zero. The corrosion products (ZnO and Zn(OH)2) were conducive to the inhibition of fatigue ratcheting and fatigue damage. Dislocation pile-up and solid solution phases at the grain boundaries of the Zn-Mg scaffold could retard the spreading of the crack tip and impede excessive grain coarsening, improving its fatigue endurance limit. Notably, the printed Zn-Mg scaffold could dissipate the fatigue energy through moderate grain boundary migration, thus reducing its plastic deformation. These findings illuminated the anti-fatigue mechanisms related to microstructural features and corrosive environments and highlighted the promising prospects of additively manufactured Zn-Mg scaffolds in orthopedic applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : Additive manufacturing (AM) of biodegradable metals shows unprecedented prospects for bone tissue regeneration medicine. The corrosion fatigue property is one of the key determinants in the performance of AM biodegradable scaffolds. In this study, a Zn-Mg gyroid scaffold was additively manufactured with admirable fatigue endurance limit and anti-fatigue capability. We reported that the corrosion fatigue performance was highly relevant to the microstructural features, validating that the grain boundary engineering strategy improved fatigue strength and inhibited crack penetration. Notably, moderate grain boundary migration could dissipate fatigue energy and reduce plastic deformation. Furthermore, corrosion products were conducive to impeding fatigue ratcheting and fatigue damage, indicating the promising potential of AM Zn-Mg scaffolds in treating load-bearing bone defects.

Abstract
Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) alloy is one of the most widely used orthopedic implant materials due to its mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility nature. Porous Ti64 structures are gaining more research interest as bone implants as they can help in reducing the stress-shielding effect when compared to their solid counterpart. The literature shows that porous Ti64 implants fabricated using different additive manufacturing (AM) process routes, such as laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and electron beam melting (EBM) can be tailored to mimic the mechanical properties of natural bone. This review paper categorizes porous implant designs into non-gradient (uniform) and gradient (non-uniform) porous structures. Gradient porous design appears to be more promising for orthopedic applications due to its closeness towards natural bone morphology and improved mechanical properties. In addition, this paper outlines the details on bone structure and its properties, mechanical properties, fatigue behavior, multifunctional porous implant designs, current challenges, and literature gaps in the research studies on porous Ti64 bone implants.

Abstract
A lack of primary stability and osteointegration in metallic implants may result in implant loosening and failure. Adding porosity to metallic implants reduces the stress shielding effect and improves implant performance, allowing the surrounding bone tissue to grow into the scaffold. However, a bioactive surface is needed to stimulate implant osteointegration and improve mechanical stability. In this study, porous titanium implants were produced via powder sintering to create different porous diameters and open interconnectivity. Two strategies were used to generate a bioactive surface on the metallic foams: (1) an inorganic alkali thermochemical treatment, (2) grafting a cell adhesive tripeptide (RGD). RGD peptides exhibit an affinity for integrins expressed by osteoblasts, and have been reported to improve osteoblast adhesion, whereas the thermochemical treatment is known to improve titanium implant osseointegration upon implantation. Bioactivated scaffolds and control samples were implanted into the tibiae of rabbits to analyze the effect of these two strategies in vivo regarding bone tissue regeneration through interconnected porosity. Histomorphometric evaluation was performed at 4 and 12 weeks after implantation. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone in-growth and on-growth were evaluated in different regions of interest (ROIs) inside and outside the implant. The results of this study show that after a long-term postoperative period, the RGD-coated samples presented higher quantification values of quantified newly formed bone tissue in the implant's outer area. However, the total analyzed bone in-growth was observed to be slightly greater in the scaffolds treated with alkali thermochemical treatment. These results suggest that both strategies contribute to enhancing porous metallic implant stability and osteointegration, and a combination of both strategies might be worth pursuing.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing enables innovative structural design for industrial applications, which allows the fabrication of lattice structures with enhanced mechanical properties, including a high strength-to-relative-density ratio. However, to commercialize lattice structures, it is necessary to define the designability of lattice geometries and characterize the associated mechanical responses, including the compressive strength. The objective of this study was to provide an optimized design process for lattice structures and develop a lattice structure characterization database that can be used to differentiate unit cell topologies and guide the unit cell selection for compression-dominated structures. Linear static finite element analysis (FEA), nonlinear FEA, and experimental tests were performed on 11 types of unit cell-based lattice structures with dimensions of 20 mm × 20 mm × 20 mm. Consequently, under the same relative density conditions, simple cubic, octahedron, truncated cube, and truncated octahedron-based lattice structures with a 3 × 3 × 3 array pattern showed the best axial compressive strength properties. Correlations among the unit cell types, lattice structure topologies, relative densities, unit cell array patterns, and mechanical properties were identified, indicating their influence in describing and predicting the behaviors of lattice structures.

Abstract
This review paper is related to the biomechanics of additively manufactured (AM) metallic scaffolds, in particular titanium alloy Ti6Al4V scaffolds. This is because Ti6Al4V has been identified as an ideal candidate for AM metallic scaffolds. The factors that affect the scaffold technology are the design, the material used to build the scaffold, and the fabrication process. This review paper includes thus a discussion on the design of Ti6A4V scaffolds in relation to how their behavior is affected by their cell shapes and porosities. This is followed by a discussion on the post treatment and mechanical characterization including in-vitro and in-vivo biomechanical studies. A review and discussion are also presented on the ongoing efforts to develop predictive tools to derive the relationships between structure, processing, properties and performance of powder-bed additive manufacturing of metals. This is a challenge when developing process computational models because the problem involves multi-physics and is of multi-scale in nature. Advantages, limitations, and future trends in AM scaffolds are finally discussed. AM is considered at the forefront of Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution. The market of scaffold technology will continue to boom because of the high demand for human tissue repair.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) has enabled the fabrication of biodegradable porous metals to satisfy the desired characteristics for orthopedic applications. The geometrical design on AM biodegradable metallic scaffolds has been found to offer a favorable opportunity to regulate their mechanical and degradation performance in previous studies, however mostly confined to static responses. In this study, we presented the effect of the geometrical design on the dynamic responses of AM Mg scaffolds for the first time. Three different types of porous structures, based on various unit cells (i.e., biomimetic, diamond, and sheet-based gyroid), were established and then subjected to selective laser melting (SLM) process using group-developed Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr alloy (JDBM) powders. The topology after dynamic electropolishing, dynamic compressive properties, and dynamic biodegradation behavior of the AM Mg scaffolds were comprehensively evaluated. It was found that dynamic electropolishing effectively removed the excessive adhered powders on the surfaces and resulted in similar geometrical deviations amongst the AM Mg scaffolds, independent of their porous structures. The geometrical design significantly affected the compressive fatigue properties of the AM Mg scaffolds, of which the sheeted-based gyroid structure demonstrated a superior fatigue endurance limit of 0.85 at 106 cycles. Furthermore, in vitro dynamic immersion behaviors of the AM Mg scaffolds revealed a decent dependence on local architectures, where the sheeted-based gyroid scaffold experienced the lowest structural loss with a relatively uniform degradation mode. The obtained results indicate that the geometrical design could provide a promising strategy to develop desirable bone substitutes for the treatment of critical-size load-bearing defects. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Additive manufacturing (AM) has provided unprecedented opportunities to fabricate geometrically complex biodegradable scaffolds where the topological design becomes a key determinant on comprehensive performance. In this paper, we fabricate 3 AM biodegradable Mg scaffolds (i.e., biomimetic, diamond, and sheet-based gyroid) and report the effect of the geometrical design on the dynamic responses of AM Mg scaffolds for the first time. The results revealed that the sheeted-based gyroid scaffold exhibited the best combination of superior compressive fatigue properties and relatively uniform dynamic biodegradation mode, suggesting that the regulation of the porous structures could be an effective approach for the optimization of AM Mg scaffolds as to satisfy clinical requirements in orthopedic applications.

Abstract
This paper is divided into seven main parts. Its purpose is to review the literature to demonstrate the importance of developing bioengineering and global production of biomaterials to care for the level of healthcare in the world. First, the general description of health as a universal human value and assumptions of a long and healthy life policy is presented. The ethical aspects of the mission of medical doctors and dentists were emphasized. The coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic has had a significant impact on health issues, determining the world’s health situation. The scope of the diseases is given, and specific methods of their prevention are discussed. The next part focuses on bioengineering issues, mainly medical engineering and dental engineering, and the need for doctors to use technical solutions supporting medicine and dentistry, taking into account the current stage Industry 4.0 of the industrial revolution. The concept of Dentistry 4.0 was generally presented, and a general Bioengineering 4.0 approach was suggested. The basics of production management and the quality loop of the product life cycle were analyzed. The general classification of medical devices and biomedical materials necessary for their production was presented. The paper contains an analysis of the synthesis and characterization of biomedical materials supporting medicine and dentistry, emphasizing additive manufacturing methods. Numerous examples of clinical applications supported considerations regarding biomedical materials. The economic conditions for implementing various biomedical materials groups were supported by forecasts for developing global markets for biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering. In the seventh part, recapitulation and final remarks against the background of historical retrospection, it was emphasized that the technological processes of production and processing of biomedical materials and the systematic increase in their global production are a determinant of the implementation of a long and healthy policy.

Abstract
Meta-biomaterials offer a promising route towards the development of life-lasting implants. The concept aims to achieve solutions that are ordinarily impossible, by offering a unique combination of mechanical, mass transport, and biological properties through the optimization of their small-scale geometrical and topological designs. In this study, we primarily focus on auxetic meta-biomaterials that have the extraordinary ability to expand in response to axial tension. This could potentially improve the longstanding problem of implant loosening, if their performance can be guaranteed in cyclically loaded conditions. The high-cycle fatigue performance of additively manufactured (AM) auxetic meta-biomaterials made from commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) was therefore studied. Small variations in the geometry of the re-entrant hexagonal honeycomb unit cell and its relative density resulted in twelve different designs (relative density: ~5-45%, re-entrant angle = 10-25°, Poisson's ratio = -0.076 to -0.504). Micro-computed tomography, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical testing were used to respectively measure the morphological and quasi-static properties of the specimens before proceeding with compression-compression fatigue testing. These auxetic meta-biomaterials exhibited morphological and mechanical properties that are deemed appropriate for bone implant applications (elastic modulus = 66.3-5648 MPa, yield strength = 1.4-46.7 MPa, pore size = 1.3-2.7 mm). With an average maximum stress level of 0.47 σy at 106 cycles (range: 0.35 σyσy- 0.82 σyσy), the auxetic structures characterized here are superior to many other non-auxetic meta-biomaterials made from the same material. The optimization of the printing process and the potential application of post-processing treatments could improve their performance in cyclically loaded settings even further. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Auxetic meta-biomaterials have a negative Poisson's ratio and, therefore, expand laterally in response to axial tension. Recently, they have been found to restore bone-implant contact along the lateral side of a hip stem. As a result, the bone will be compressed along both of the implant's contact lines, thereby actively reducing the risk of implant failure. In this case the material will be subjected to cyclic loading, for which no experimental data has been reported yet. Here, we present the first ever study of the fatigue performance of additively manufactured auxetic meta-biomaterials based on the re-entrant hexagonal honeycomb. These results will advance the adoption of auxetic meta-biomaterials in load-bearing applications, such as the hip stem, to potentially improve implant longevity.

Abstract
The unprecedented properties of meta-biomaterials could pave the way for the development of life-lasting orthopedic implants. Here, we used non-auxetic meta-biomaterials to address the shortcomings of the current treatment options in acetabular revision surgery. Due to the severe bone deficiencies and poor bone quality, it can be very challenging to acquire adequate initial implant stability and long-term fixation. More advanced treatments, such as patient-specific implants, do guarantee the initial stability, but are formidably expensive and may eventually fail due to stress shielding. We, therefore, developed meta-implants furnished with a deformable porous outer layer. Upon implantation, this layer plastically deforms into the defects, thereby improving the initial stability and homogeneously stimulating the surrounding bone. We first studied the space-filling behavior of additively manufactured pure titanium lattices, based on six different unit cells, in a compression test complemented with full-field strain measurements. The diamond, body-centered cubic, and rhombic dodecahedron unit cells were eventually selected for the design of the deformable porous outer layer. Each design came in three different relative density profiles, namely maximum (MAX), functionally graded (FG), and minimum (MIN). After their compression in bone-mimicking molds with simulated acetabular defects, the space-filling behavior of the implants was evaluated using load-displacement curves, micro-CT images, and 3D reconstructions. The meta-implants with an FG diamond infill exhibited the most promising space-filling behavior. However, the required push-in forces exceed the impact forces currently applied in surgery. Future research should, therefore, focus on design optimization, to improve the space-filling behavior and to facilitate the implantation process for orthopedic surgeons. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Ideally, orthopedic implants would last for the entire lifetime of the patient. Unfortunately, they rarely do. Critically sized defects are a common sight in the revision of acetabular cups, and rather difficult to treat. The permanent deformation of lattice structures can be used to create shape-morphing implants that would fill up the defect site, and thereby restore the physiological loading conditions. Bending-dominated structures were incorporated in the porous outer layer of the space-filling meta-implants for their considerable lateral expansion in response to axial compression. A functionally graded density offered structural integrity at the joint while enhancing the deformability at the bone-implant interface. With the use of a more ductile metal, CP-Ti, these meta-implants could be deformed without strut failure.

Abstract
This work is devoted to the research of porous titanium alloy structures suitable for use in biomedical applications. Mechanical properties were examined on six series of samples with different structures and porosity via static compressive test to identify the type of structure suitable for elimination of the “stress shielding” effect. In addition, high porosity is desirable due to the overgrowth of bone tissue into the internal structure of the implant. The samples were made of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V by using selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing. The series of samples differ from each other in pore size (200, 400, and 600 µm) and porous structure topology (cubic or trabecular). The actual weight of all samples, which plays an important role in identifying other characteristics, was determined. Compressive tests were focused on the detection of maximum stress. The highest porosity and thus the lowest weight were achieved in the samples with a trabecular structure and 600 µm pore size. All tested samples reached optimal values of maximum stress and tensile strength. The most appropriate mechanical properties were observed for samples with a 200 µm pore diameter and cubic structure.

Abstract
Scaffolds in tissue engineering can be created or printed nowadays with various structures that consist of a number of three-dimensional (3D) units stacked together periodically. The performance or properties of such scaffolds can be affected by the unit configurations and parameters, which, however, has not been well investigated and elucidated. This paper presents our study on the influence of unit configuration and parameters on the scaffolds performance by taking triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) as the basic unit. The normalized values of elastic modulus, shear modulus and permeability were used to characterize the scaffold performance and analyzed by means of finite element analysis and CFD simulation, with focus on identifying the influence of unit configurations and parameters on the scaffold mechanical and permeable properties. Furthermore, by selective laser melting (SLM) printing technique, the cubic Primitive and IWP scaffolds with an oversize of 12 mm (2 × 2 × 2 units) were created and subjected to compressive tests. Both simulation and experiment results are in agreement to illustrate that unit configuration and parameters have significant influence on the mechanical and permeable properties of TPMS units. The methods and findings in the present work would serve as the base or rationales to regulate the unit configurations and parameters with trade-off solutions for given tissue engineering application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Artificial vertebral implant with a lateral or posterior screw-rod fixation system are usually employed in lumbar reconstruction surgery to rebuild the lumbar spine after partial resection due to a tumor or trauma. However, few studies have investigated the effect of the various fixation systems on the biomechanics of the reconstructed lumbar system. This study aims to evaluate the influence of different surgical fixation strategies on the biomechanical performance of a reconstructed lumbar spine system in terms of the strength and long-term stability. METHODS Two typical lumbar spine reconstruction case models that correspond to lateral or posterior fixation systems were built based on the clinical data. Finite element analyses were performed, and comparisons were made between the two models based on the predicted stress distribution of the reconstructed lumbar spine model, bone-growth area of the endplate, and the range of motion under various normal daily activities. RESULTS The load from the upper vertebral body was found to be effectively transmitted onto the lower vertebral body by a vertebral implant with the lateral fixation system; this was favorable for bone growth after surgery. However, significantly high stresses were concentrated around the interaction region between the screws and bone, owing to the uneven lateral fixation structure; this may increase the risk of bone fractures and screw loosening in the long term. For the posterior fixation case, stably posterior fixation structure was favorable to maintain stability for the reconstructed lumbar spine. However, the load was mainly transmitted via the fixation rod rather than the vertebral implant, owing to the stress shielding effect. Therefore, the predicted strain on the endplate were insufficient for bone ingrowth under most of the spinal activates, which could cause bone loss and prosthesis loosening. CONCLUSIONS In this study, the comparisons of the reconstructed lumbar spine system with lateral and posterior fixation strategies were conducted. The Pros and Cons of these two fixation strategies was deeply discussed and the associated clinical issues were provided. The results of this study will have a clear impact in understanding the biomechanics of the lumbar spine with different fixation strategies and providing necessary instructions to the design and application of the lumbar spinal fixation system.

Abstract
Cellular structures consist of foams, honeycombs, and lattices. Lattices have many outstanding properties over foams and honeycombs, such as lightweight, high strength, absorbing energy, and reducing vibration, which has been extensively studied and concerned. Because of excellent properties, lattice structures have been widely used in aviation, bio-engineering, automation, and other industrial fields. In particular, the application of additive manufacturing (AM) technology used for fabricating lattice structures has pushed the development of designing lattice structures to a new stage and made a breakthrough progress. By searching a large number of research literature, the primary work of this paper reviews the lattice structures. First, based on the introductions about lattices of literature, the definition and classification of lattice structures are concluded. Lattice structures are divided into two general categories in this paper: uniform and non-uniform. Second, the performance and application of lattice structures are introduced in detail. In addition, the fabricating methods of lattice structures, i.e., traditional processing and additive manufacturing, are evaluated. Third, for uniform lattice structures, the main concern during design is to develop highly functional unit cells, which in this paper is summarized as three different methods, i.e., geometric unit cell based, mathematical algorithm generated, and topology optimization. Forth, non-uniform lattice structures are reviewed from two aspects of gradient and topology optimization. These methods include Voronoi-tessellation, size gradient method (SGM), size matching and scaling (SMS), and homogenization, optimization, and construction (HOC). Finally, the future development of lattice structures is prospected from different aspects.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) can be seen as a disruptive process that builds complex components layer upon layer. Two of its distinct technologies are Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Electron Beam Melting (EBM), which are powder bed fusion processes that create metallic parts with the aid of a beam source. One of the most studied and manufactured superalloys in metal AM is the Ti–6Al–4V, which can be applied in the aerospace field due to its low density and high melting point, and in the biomedical area owing to its high corrosion resistance and excellent biocompatibility when in contact with tissues or bones of the human body. The research novelty of this work is the aggregation of all kinds of data from the last 20 years of investigation about Ti–6Al–4V parts manufactured via SLM and EBM, namely information related to residual stresses (RS), as well as the influence played by different heat treatments in reducing porosity and increasing mechanical properties. Throughout the report, it can be seen that the expected microstructure of the Ti–6Al–4V alloy is different in both manufacturing processes, mainly due to the distinct cooling rates. However, heat treatments can modify the microstructure, reduce RS, and increase the ductility, fatigue life, and hardness of the components. Furthermore, distinct post-treatments can induce compressive RS on the part’s surface, consequently enhancing the fatigue life.

Abstract
With the increasing application of orthopedic scaffolds, a dramatically increasing number of requirements for scaffolds are precise. The porous structure has been a fundamental design in the bone tissue engineering or orthopedic clinics because of its low Young's modulus, high compressive strength, and abundant cell accommodation space. The porous structure manufactured by additive manufacturing (AM) technology has controllable pore size, pore shape, and porosity. The single unit can be designed and arrayed with AM, which brings controllable pore characteristics and mechanical properties. This paper presents the current status of porous designs in AM technology. The porous structures are stated from the cellular structure and the whole structure. In the aspect of the cellular structure, non-parametric design and parametric design are discussed here according to whether the algorithm generates the structure or not. The non-parametric design comprises the diamond, the body-centered cubic, and the polyhedral structure, etc. The Voronoi, the Triply Periodic Minimal Surface, and other parametric designs are mainly discussed in parametric design. In the discussion of cellular structures, we emphasize the design, and the resulting biomechanical and biological effects caused by designs. In the aspect of the whole structure, the recent experimental researches are reviewed on uniform design, layered gradient design, and layered gradient design based on topological optimization, etc. These parts are summarized because of the development of technology and the demand for mechanics or bone growth. Finally, the challenges faced by the porous designs and prospects of porous structure in orthopedics are proposed in this paper.

Abstract
Schwartz diamond graded porous structures (SDGPSs), constructed by a triply-periodic-minimal-surface diamond unit cell topology, were developed with various unit cell sizes and printed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) from a commercially pure titanium powder for bone implant applications. The effect of unit cell size on the printability, strut dimensions, stress and strain distributions, mechanical properties and energy absorption capability of SDGPSs was investigated. The results indicate the good printability of SDGPSs via LPBF with multiple unit cell sizes from 3.5 mm to 5.5 mm through the three-dimensional reconstruction from micro-computed tomography. The unit cell size plays a critical role in both strut diameters and specific surface areas of SDGPSs. An increase in the unit cell size leads to a reduction in the experimental Young's modulus from 673.08 MPa to 518.71 MPa and compressive yield strength from 11.43 MPa to 7.73 MPa. The mechanical properties of LPBF-printed SDGPSs are higher than those predicted by the finite element method, which is attributed to the higher volume fractions of the printed SDGPSs than the designed values. Furthermore, a rise in unit cell size leads to the decrease of energy absorption capability from 6.06 MJ/mm3 to 4.32 MJ/mm3 and exhibits little influence on the absorption efficiency. These findings provide a good understanding and guidance to the optimization on the unit cell size of functionally graded porous structures for desirable properties.

Abstract
With additive manufacturing increasingly being embraced in the area of sports technology, focus has shifted toward cellular structures for impact protection. Periodic lattice structures can be tailored for a specific response by modifying the geometry of individual cells, with the structure capable of being modified to conform around a given body. However, the effect of modifying specific design characteristics within a lattice and the interrelationships between them are not well understood. This study examines five geometric design variables: cell width, strut cross-sectional area (CSA), strut shape, cell orientation, and joint filleting, and their effect on the compressive behavior of a lattice structure. Truncated octahedron lattices were manufactured using nylon through the process of material extrusion and tested under compression at a constant strain rate of 1.0 s-1. Design of experiments was utilized to analyze the results by implementing a 2(5-1) factorial design. Results indicated that the strut CSA, cell width, and interaction between the two design characteristics had the largest effects on the plateau stress of the lattice and its energy capacity.

Abstract
The aim of this study was the analysis of the mechanical behaviour of a partially porous lumbar custom-made cage by means of a subject-specific finite element analysis (FEA). The cage, made of Ti6Al4V ELI alloy, was produced via electron beam melting (EBM) process and surgically implanted in a female subject, 50 years old. The novelty of this study was the customized design of the cage and of its internal structure, which is impossible to obtain with the traditional production techniques. The 3D model of the spine was obtained from the computed tomography (CT) of the patient. Moreover, high-resolution industrial CT was also used to reconstruct a 3D model of the cage, with its real (as-produced) features, such as superficial roughness, morphology of the bulk and of the porous structure. The workflow was divided in several steps: the main finite element analyses were non-linear and quasi-static regarding: the rhombic dodecahedron (RD) unit cell of the porous structure; the device; the whole L4-L5 motion segment with the implanted cage. Stress distribution was calculated under compression load for all models. For the RD unit cell, the maximum stress appeared at the connected cross nodes, where notch effect was present. For the cage subjected to a load of 1 kN, the porous structure did not present any functional failure. For the whole biomechanical system subjected to a physiological load of 360 N, the calculated stress in the bone was smaller than its yield strength value. On the axial view, a zone with higher compressive stresses was present on the L5 vertebral body. This was due to the contact stress between the cage and the vertebra. From the comparison between FE results and the CT images of the spine, bone remodelling was supposed, with the formation of new bone. Graphical abstract Workflow showing the phases of the research.

Abstract
The concept of "mechanical metamaterials" has become increasingly popular, since their macro-scale characteristics can be designed to exhibit unusual combinations of mechanical properties on the micro-scale. The advances in additive manufacturing (AM, three-dimensional printing) techniques have boosted the fabrication of these mechanical metamaterials by facilitating a precise control over their micro-architecture. Although mechanical metamaterials with negative Poisson's ratios (i.e., auxetic metamaterials) have received much attention before and have been reviewed multiple times, no comparable review exists for architected materials with positive Poisson's ratios. Therefore, this review will focus on the topology-property relationships of non-auxetic mechanical metamaterials in general and five topological designs in particular. These include the designs based on the diamond, cube, truncated cube, rhombic dodecahedron, and the truncated cuboctahedron unit cells. We reviewed the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of these architected materials, while considering the effects of other factors such as those of the AM process. In addition, we systematically analyzed the experimental, computational, and analytical data and solutions available in the literature for the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Compression dominated lattices, such as the (truncated) cube, showed the highest mechanical properties. All of the proposed unit cells showed a normalized fatigue strength below that of solid titanium (i.e., 40% of the yield stress), in the range of 12⁻36% of their yield stress. The unit cells discussed in this review could potentially be applied in bone-mimicking porous structures.

Abstract
Porous titanium (Ti) and its alloys fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) techniques have attractive potential for dental and bone defect repair fields. Understanding the relationship between cells and the surface of the as-built three-dimensional (3D) scaffold interactions is not only necessary for tissue engineering but also promising for improving the fabrication process in the manufacture of artificial implants by AM technology. In this study, we have aimed to investigate the cell behavior including adhesion and proliferation of fibroblasts (L929) on Ti-6Al-4 V scaffolds fabricated by the electron beam melting method. The porosities of Ti-6Al-4 V scaffolds are 0% (compact), 60%, and 70%, respectively. Different cell behaviors have been observed from all of the specimens after 4 and 8 days of cell incubation. The present result indicates that, besides the surface roughness, the surface topography of specimens should also be taken into consideration to investigate the interaction between implants and cells. Therefore, this study would provide several possibilities for improving the osteointegration functions of the manufactured porous metallic implants in orthopedic and dental applications.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) (=3D printing) and rational design techniques have enabled development of meta-biomaterials with unprecedented combinations of mechanical, mass transport, and biological properties. Such meta-biomaterials are usually topologically ordered and are designed by repeating a number of regular unit cells in different directions to create a lattice structure. Establishing accurate topology-property relationships is of critical importance for these materials. In this paper, we specifically focus on AM metallic meta-biomaterials aimed for application as bone substitutes and orthopaedic implants and review the currently available evidence regarding their mechanical performance under quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions. The topology-property relationships are reviewed for regular beam-based lattice structures, sheet-based lattice structures including those based on triply periodic minimal surface, and graded designs. The predictive models used for establishing the topology-property relationships including analytical and computational models are covered as well. Moreover, we present an overview of the effects of the AM processes, material type, tissue regeneration, biodegradation, surface bio-functionalization, post-manufacturing (heat) treatments, and loading profiles on the quasi-static mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of AM meta-biomaterials. AM meta-biomaterials exhibiting unusual mechanical properties such as negative Poisson's ratios (auxetic meta-biomaterials), shape memory behavior, and superelasitcity as well as the potential applications of such unusual behaviors (e.g. deployable implants) are presented too. The paper concludes with some suggestions for future research. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Additive manufacturing enables fabrication of meta-biomaterials with rare combinations of topological, mechanical, and mass transport properties. Given that the micro-scale topological design determines the macro-scale properties of meta-biomaterials, establishing topology-property relationships is the central research question when rationally designing meta-biomaterials. The interest in understanding the relationship between the topological design and material type on the one hand and the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of meta-biomaterials on the other hand is currently booming. This paper presents and critically evaluates the most important trends and findings in this area with a special focus on the metallic biomaterials used for skeletal applications to enable researchers better understand the current state-of-the-art and to guide the design of future research projects.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) can obtain not only customized external shape but also porous internal structure for scaffolds, both of which are of great importance for repairing large segmental bone defects. The scaffold fabrication process generally involves scaffold design, AM, and post-treatments. Thus, this article firstly reviews the state-of-the-art of scaffold design, including computer-aided design, reverse modeling, topology optimization, and mathematical modeling. In addition, the current characteristics of several typical AM techniques, including selective laser sintering, fused deposition modeling (FDM), and electron beam melting (EBM), especially their advantages and limitations are presented. In particular, selective laser sintering is able to obtain scaffolds with nanoscale grains, due to its high heating rate and a short holding time. However, this character usually results in insufficient densification. FDM can fabricate scaffolds with a relative high accuracy of pore structure but with a relative low mechanical strength. EBM with a high beam-material coupling efficiency can process high melting point metals, but it exhibits a low-resolution and poor surface quality. Furthermore, the common post-treatments, with main focus on heat and surface treatments, which are applied to improve the comprehensive performance are also discussed. Finally, this review also discusses the future directions for AM scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
The mechanical behaviour of porous lattice materials for potential orthopaedic applications was investigated at a fine scale by means of digital image correlation (DIC). Specimens with cubic, body cubic-centered reinforced (BCCZ), and diamond mesostructures were tested in quasi-static compression up to failure. Images were continuously recorded by an imaging setup and processed by a custom DIC program, OpenDIC. The resulting strain maps were analyzed in both spatial and temporal scales, displaying the onset and evolution of strain heterogeneities. The three geometries show different failure modes, i.e. collective buckling of an entire row for cubic, diagonal shearing band for BCCZ, and generalized crushing for diamond. The strain maps correlate well with these patterns. Most importantly, they show early strain localization below the macroscopic elastic limit. After failure, a phenomenon of strain release was witnessed and evaluated in the parts of the specimen that do not fracture. In the cubic geometry, the vertical struts sustain most of the deformation. Further analysis shows that the rows of vertical struts have similar, yet scattered, evolutions until failure. Interestingly, the row that leads to specimen failure is not necessarily the first one to deform. In addition to these experimental results, the uncertainties of the method were thoroughly assessed by means of calibration procedures.

Abstract
The continuous design of cubic lattice architecture materials provides a wide range of mechanical properties. It makes possible to control the stress magnitude and the local maxima in the structure. This study reveals some architectures specifically designed to reach a good compromise between mass reduction and mechanical strength. Decreased local stress concentration prevents the early occurrence of localized plasticity or damage, and promotes the fatigue resistance. The high performance of cubic architectures is reported extensively, and structures with the best damage resistance are identified. The fatigue resistance and S⁻N curves (stress magnitude versus lifetime curves) can be estimated successfully, based on the investigation of the stress concentration. The output data are represented in two-dimensional (2D) color maps to help mechanical engineers in selecting the suitable architecture with the desired stress concentration factor, and eventually with the correct fatigue lifetime.

Abstract
Mechanical performance of additively manufactured (AM) Ti6Al4V scaffolds has mostly been studied in uniaxial compression. However, in real-life applications, more complex load conditions occur. To address this, a novel sample geometry was designed, tested and analyzed in this work. The new scaffold geometry, with porosity gradient between the solid ends and scaffold middle, was successfully used for quasi-static tension, tension-tension (R = 0.1), tension-compression (R = −1) and compression-compression (R = 10) fatigue tests. Results show that global loading in tension-tension leads to a decreased fatigue performance compared to global loading in compression-compression. This difference in fatigue life can be understood fairly well by approximating the local tensile stress amplitudes in the struts near the nodes. Local stress based Haigh diagrams were constructed to provide more insight in the fatigue behavior. When fatigue life is interpreted in terms of local stresses, the behavior of single struts is shown to be qualitatively the same as bulk Ti6Al4V. Compression-compression and tension-tension fatigue regimes lead to a shorter fatigue life than fully reversed loading due to the presence of a mean local tensile stress. Fractographic analysis showed that most fracture sites were located close to the nodes, where the highest tensile stresses are located.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques enable fabrication of bone-mimicking meta-biomaterials with unprecedented combinations of topological, mechanical, and mass transport properties. The mechanical performance of AM meta-biomaterials is a direct function of their topological design. It is, however, not clear to what extent the material type is important in determining the fatigue behavior of such biomaterials. We therefore aimed to determine the isolated and modulated effects of topological design and material type on the fatigue response of metallic meta-biomaterials fabricated with selective laser melting. Towards that end, we designed and additively manufactured Co-Cr meta-biomaterials with three types of repeating unit cells and three to four porosities per type of repeating unit cell. The AM meta-biomaterials were then mechanically tested to obtain their normalized S-N curves. The obtained S-N curves of Co-Cr meta-biomaterials were compared to those of meta-biomaterials with same topological designs but made from other materials, i.e. Ti-6Al-4V, tantalum, and pure titanium, available from our previous studies. We found the material type to be far more important than the topological design in determining the normalized fatigue strength of our AM metallic meta-biomaterials. This is the opposite of what we have found for the quasi-static mechanical properties of the same meta-biomaterials. The effects of material type, manufacturing imperfections, and topological design were different in the high and low cycle fatigue regions. That is likely because the cyclic response of meta-biomaterials depends not only on the static and fatigue strengths of the bulk material but also on other factors that may include strut roughness, distribution of the micro-pores created inside the struts during the AM process, and plasticity. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Meta-biomaterials are a special class of metamaterials with unusual or unprecedented combinations of mechanical, physical (e.g. mass transport), and biological properties. Topologically complex and additively manufactured meta-biomaterials have been shown to improve bone regeneration and osseointegration. The mechanical properties of such biomaterials are directly related to their topological design and material type. However, previous studies of such biomaterials have largely neglected the effects of material type, instead focusing on topological design. We show here that neglecting the effects of material type is unjustified. We studied the isolated and combined effects of topological design and material type on the normalized S-N curves of metallic bone-mimicking biomaterials and found them to be more strongly dependent on the material type than topological design.

Abstract
The mechanical properties and biocompatibility of titanium alloy medical devices and implants produced by additive manufacturing (AM) technologies – in particular, selective laser melting (SLM), electron beam melting (EBM) and laser metal deposition (LMD) – have been investigated by several researchers demonstrating how these innovative processes are able to fulfil medical requirements for clinical applications. This work reviews the advantages given by these technologies, which include the possibility to create porous complex structures to improve osseointegration and mechanical properties (best match with the modulus of elasticity of local bone), to lower processing costs, to produce custom-made implants according to the data for the patient acquired via computed tomography and to reduce waste.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has helped to achieve several advances in the medical field, particularly as far as fabrication of implants is concerned. But the application of direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) bone plate is quite limited due to the indeterminate mechanical property. The purposes of this study were to characterize the biomechanical properties of the polished DMLS reconstruction plate and to compare these with the properties of commonly applied implants and to find whether the mechanical performance of DMLS plate meets the requirements for clinical application. METHODS In this study, we fabricated two groups of plates by DMLS and computer numerical control (CNC) techniques. After that, we polished all samples and investigated their roughness, components, hardness, static bending, and torsional performance. Moreover, cyclic bending tests and fractographic analysis were conducted. Statistical comparisons of the group by means of monotonic test data were made, and a qualitative comparison was performed to assess failures in fatigue. RESULTS We found no differences in surface roughness or components after polishing, but the DMLS plate hardness is 7.42% (p < 0.01) greater than that of the CNC plates. Compared with the CNC plates, the DMLS plate static bending and torsional performance were significantly greater. In a dynamic test, the DMLS plates survived 106, 106, 32,731, and 33,264 cycles under 0.6, 0.8, 0.9, and 1 kN cyclic loads, respectively, while the CNC plates survived 106, 106, 106, and 283,714 cycles. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that the mechanical performances of the DMLS plate are stronger, and the strength under fatigue tests is sufficient. DMLS implant has great potential and may become a better choice for clinical use in the future. However, direct application of these AM instruments in the operating room requires further validation including animal and clinical experiment.

Abstract
Metallic cellular scaffold is one of the best choices for orthopaedic implants as a replacement of human body parts, which could improve life quality and increase longevity for the people needed. Unlike conventional methods of making cellular scaffolds, three-dimensional (3D) printing or additive manufacturing opens up new possibilities to fabricate those customisable intricate designs with highly interconnected pores. In the past decade, metallic powder-bed based 3D printing methods emerged and the techniques are becoming increasingly mature recently, where selective laser melting (SLM) and selective electron beam melting (SEBM) are the two representatives. Due to the advantages of good dimensional accuracy, high build resolution, clean build environment, saving materials, high customisability, etc., SLM and SEBM show huge potential in direct customisable manufacturing of metallic cellular scaffolds for orthopaedic implants. Ti-6Al-4V to date is still considered to be the optimal materials for producing orthopaedic implants due to its best combination of biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. This paper presents a state-of-the-art overview mainly on manufacturing, topological design, mechanical properties and biocompatibility of cellular Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds via SLM and SEBM methods. Current manufacturing limitations, topological shortcomings, uncertainty of biocompatible test were sufficiently discussed herein. Future perspectives and recommendations were given at the end.
