Characterization of COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial discussions on the social question-and-answer site Quora

INTRODUCTION

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, underserved populations, such as racial and ethnic minorities, were disproportionately impacted by illness, hospitalization, and death. Equity in clinical trials means that the participants in clinical trials represent the people who are most likely to have the health condition and need the treatment that the trial is testing. Infodemiology approaches examining user conversations on social media platforms have the potential to elucidate specific barriers and challenges related to clinical trial participation, including among racial and ethnic minority populations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study retrospectively collected and analyzed user question and answer posts from Quora in October 2021 using an inductive content coding approach. We also examined user's publicly available profile metadata to identify racial and ethnic minority users to capture their experiences, attitudes, topics, and discussions of barriers to COVID-19 vaccine trials.

RESULTS

A total of 1073 questions and 7479 answers were collected. A total of 763 questions and 2548 answers were identified as related to COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials. The majority of these online interactions focused on asking questions and sharing knowledge and opinions about COVID-19 vaccine trials, including major topics related to: (a) interpreting whether clinical trial results could be trusted; (b) questions about vaccine efficacy and safety; (c) understanding trial design, regulatory considerations, and vaccine platforms; and (d) questions about trial enrollment, length, and adequate representation. Additionally, four major barriers discussed included: (i) disagreement from users regarding whether clinical trials require representation from different racial and ethnic minorities; (ii) concerns regarding the safety of trials when participating; (iii) lack of knowledge on how to participate in a trial; and (iv) questions of whether participants could withdraw from a trial to access an approved COVID-19 vaccine.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study found active user discussions related to COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials on Quora, including those specific to minority health topics and those posted by a smaller group of self-identified racial and ethnic minority online users. Results from this study can help identify barriers to participation among the general public and underrepresented groups while also supporting the design of future outreach strategies to help with recruitment and inclusive trial participation.

Quality and accuracy of online nutrition-related information: a systematic review of content analysis studies

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review aimed to summarise the level of quality and accuracy of nutrition-related information on websites and social media and determine if quality and accuracy varied between websites and social media or publishers of information.

DESIGN

This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021224277). CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health and Academic Search Complete were systematically searched on 15 January 2021 to identify content analysis studies, published in English after 1989, that evaluated the quality and/or accuracy of nutrition-related information published on websites or social media. A coding framework was used to classify studies' findings about information quality and/or accuracy as poor, good, moderate or varied. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Quality Criteria Checklist was used to assess the risk of bias.

RESULTS

From 10 482 articles retrieved, sixty-four were included. Most studies evaluated information from websites (n 53, 82·8 %). Similar numbers of studies assessed quality (n 41, 64·1 %) and accuracy (n 47, 73·4 %). Almost half of the studies reported that quality (n 20, 48·8 %) or accuracy (n 23, 48·9 %) was low. Quality and accuracy of information were similar on social media and websites, however, varied between information publishers. High risk of bias in sample selection and quality or accuracy evaluations was a common limitation.

CONCLUSION

Online nutrition-related information is often inaccurate and of low quality. Consumers seeking information online are at risk of being misinformed. More action is needed to improve the public's eHealth and media literacy and the reliability of online nutrition-related information.

Users' Willingness to Share Health Information in a Social Question-and-Answer Community: Cross-sectional Survey in China

BACKGROUND

Social question-and-answer communities play an increasingly important role in the dissemination of health information. It is important to identify influencing factors of user willingness to share health information to improve public health literacy.

OBJECTIVE

This study explored influencing factors of social question-and-answer community users who share health information to provide reference for the construction of a high-quality health information sharing community.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted through snowball sampling of 185 participants who are Zhihu users in China. A structural equation analysis was used to verify the interaction and influence of the strength between variables in the model. Hierarchical regression was also used to test the mediating effect in the model.

RESULTS

Altruism (β=.264, P<.001), intrinsic reward (β=.260, P=.03), self-efficacy (β=.468, P<.001), and community influence (β=.277, P=.003) had a positive effect on users' willingness to share health information (WSHI). By contrast, extrinsic reward (β=-0.351, P<.001) had a negative effect. Self-efficacy also had a mediating effect (β=.147, 29.15%, 0.147/0.505) between community influence and WSHI.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that users' WSHI is influenced by many factors including altruism, self-efficacy, community influence, and intrinsic reward. Improving the social atmosphere of the platform is an effective method of encouraging users to share health information.

Management Accounting for Healthy Nutrition Education: Meta-Analysis

Unequal economic growth shapes food systems. Nutrition problems incorporate inappropriate practices, so nutrition education is key to empowering consumers to choose healthy foods. However, increasing the accessibility of healthy diets is related to reducing the cost of nutritious foods. The accounting management of healthy nutrition should allow for optimal global decision-making. The evolution of scientific production and global research trends on this topic between 1968 and 2019 have been studied. Statistical and mathematical methods have been applied to 1738 documents from the Scopus database. The results provided data on the agents that participate in the development of the theme. Data reveal an exponential trend, especially in the previous decade, with more than 50% of scientific production. Future lines of research have been identified: investment in health systems; green label education; early impact of food insecurity; WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) nutrition education; food waste audit; and ecological footprint of food. The central contribution of the study has been to detect the main future directions of research, providing critical points that will allow us to identify the themes of future publications, in addition to providing an instrument for decision-making carried out by the research funding sponsors.
