Development of metal-organic framework (MOF)-B12 system as new bio-inspired heterogeneous catalyst

Green Molecular Transformation in Dual Catalysis: Photoredox Activation of Vitamin B12 Using Heterogeneous Photocatalyst

This concept focuses on dual-catalysis using metal complexes and heterogeneous photocatalysts. Vitamin B12 derivatives are sophisticated metal complexes that facilitate enzymatic reactions in the biological systems. The B12 enzymes inspired reactions catalytically proceed in dual-catalyst systems of B12 derivatives and heterogeneous photocatalysts, such as titanium oxide (TiO2) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), under light irradiation. The cobalt ions in B12 derivatives are effectively reduced by photoexcited photocatalysts, producing low-valent Co(I) species. The photoinduced nucleophilic Co(I) species react with an alkyl halide to form an organometallic complex with a Co-C bond. The Co-C bond dissociates during photolysis to generate alkyl radicals. Based on this mechanism, dual-catalysis effectively promotes various light-driven organic syntheses and light-driven dehalogenation reactions of toxic alkyl halides. The trends of the dual-catalyst system and recent progress in this field are discussed in this concept.

Advances and Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) in Emerging Technologies: A Comprehensive Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are the wonder material of the 21st century consist of metal ions/clusters coordinated to organic ligands to form one- or more-dimensional porous structures with unprecedented chemical and structural tunability, exceptional thermal stability, ultrahigh porosity, and a large surface area, making them an ideal candidate for numerous potential applications. In this work, the recent progress in the design and synthetic approaches of MOFs and explore their potential applications in the fields of gas storage and separation, catalysis, magnetism, drug delivery, chemical/biosensing, supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries and self-powered wearable sensors based on piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators are summarized. Lastly, this work identifies present challenges and outlines future opportunities in this field, which can provide valuable references.

Vitamin B12 and a metal-organic framework enable the photocatalytic generation of alkyl radicals

A versatile Co-catalyst-vitamin B12 (cobalamin)-can be photochemically reduced to its catalytically active Co(I) form under visible light irradiation, in the presence of MIL-125-NH2(Ti) as a photocatalyst and utilized for the generation of alkyl radicals. The prior reduction of cobalamin to the Co(II) form is not required in this method.

The inorganic chemistry of the cobalt corrinoids - an update

The inorganic chemistry of the cobalt corrinoids, derivatives of vitamin B₁₂, is reviewed, with particular emphasis on equilibrium constants for, and kinetics of, their axial ligand substitution reactions. The role the corrin ligand plays in controlling and modifying the properties of the metal ion is emphasised. Other aspects of the chemistry of these compounds, including their structure, corrinoid complexes with metals other than cobalt, the redox chemistry of the cobalt corrinoids and their chemical redox reactions, and their photochemistry are discussed. Their role as catalysts in non-biological reactions and aspects of their organometallic chemistry are briefly mentioned. Particular mention is made of the role that computational methods - and especially DFT calculations - have played in developing our understanding of the inorganic chemistry of these compounds. A brief overview of the biological chemistry of the B₁₂-dependent enzymes is also given for the reader's convenience.

Recent Progress in the Removal of Legacy and Emerging Organic Contaminants from Wastewater Using Metal-Organic Frameworks: An Overview on Adsorption and Catalysis Processes

Water covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface, but the amount of freshwater available for human use is only 2.5% and, although it is continuously replenished via the water cycle, freshwater is a finite and limited resource. The Earth’s water is affected by pollution and while water quality is an issue of global concern, the specific regulations on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are limited. In order to achieve the goals set by EU regulations, the treatment of wastewater is a scientifically and technologically challenging issue. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials used for the removal of priority and emerging contaminants from wastewater, since they can mitigate those contaminants via both adsorption as well as catalysis processes. MOFs can offer selective adsorption of CECs by various adsorption mechanisms. The catalytic removal of priority and emerging organic contaminants from wastewater using MOFs implies Fenton, electro-Fenton, and photo-Fenton processes. Overall, MOFs can be considered as promising materials for the elimination of priority and emerging organic contaminants from various wastewater types, but the involved processes must be studied in detail for a larger number of compounds.

Ruthenium(II) Phosphine/Picolylamine Dichloride Complexes Hydrogenation and DFT Calculations

Treating [Ru(PPh3)3Cl2] with the amine 2-picolylamine (Picam) ligand in a 1:1 molar ratio, the Ru(II) complex trans-Ru(PPh3)2(Picam)Cl2 (1) is obtained in methylene chloride and can be isolated as a pure solid compound. The single-crystal structure of 1 was determined by X-ray crystallography. The geometry at the Ru metal center is a distorted octahedral environment with a trans arrangement of the two chlorides. A trans effect of the bond lengths was observed within the structure. Similarly, treating [Ru(PPh3)3Cl2] with 1:1:1 molar ratios of 2-picolylamine (Picam) and 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphine)ferrocene (DPPF) ligands yielded the Ru(II) complex trans-Ru(DPPF)(Picam)Cl2 (2). In identical conditions, the homogeneous hydrogen transfer catalytic reactivity of complexes 1 and 2 has been tested in a basic 2-propanol solution and they indicate different catalytic activity. It was discovered that monodentate and bidentate phosphine ligands of Ru(II) complexes, as well as cis- and trans-chloro configuration display different catalytic properties from our experimental data, in agreement with literature data. Based on DFT calculations, the relative molecular catalytic reactivity of all available experimental data is understood from the relative calculated molecular energy.

Application of bioorganometallic B12 in green organic synthesis

Bioorganometallic structure found in coenzyme B₁₂ is a key component in B₁₂-dependent enzymatic reactions in natural enzymes. Cleavage of a cobalt-carbon bond in organometallic B₁₂ compound provide reactive intermediate for molecular transformations. Application of the bioorganometallic B₁₂ in organic synthesis have been developed using natural vitamin B₁₂ as well as synthetic vitamin B₁₂ derivatives as a bioinspired catalyst in organic solvent. Vitamin B₁₂ derivatives composed of corrinoid structure should form stable organometallic compound having a cobalt-carbon bond. Using the unique property of the organometallic vitamin B₁₂ derivatives, various catalytic reactions have been developed in synthetic organic chemistry. The dual catalytic system of vitamin B₁₂ derivatives and photocatalyst, such as Ru(II) polypyridyl complex or titanium oxide, could construct light-driven molecular transformations. The B₁₂-dependent enzymes mimic reactions, such as the dechlorination of organic halides and the radical mediated isomerization reactions, catalytically proceed in the dual catalyst system. Electroorganic syntheses mediated by the vitamin B₁₂ derivatives have been developed as green molecular transformations. The redox active vitamin B₁₂ derivatives shows a unique catalysis in the electroorganic synthesis, such as alkene and alkyne reductions.

Encapsulation of bacterial cells in cytoprotective ZIF-90 crystals as living composites

Exploiting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as selectively permeable shelters for encapsulating engineered cells to form hybrid living materials has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Optimizing the synthesis process to improve encapsulation efficiency (EE) is critical for further technological development and applications. Here, using ZIF-90 and genetically engineered Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a demo, we fabricated E. coli@ZIF-90 living composites in which E. coli cells were encapsulated in ZIF-90 crystals. We illustrated that ZIF-90 could serve as a protective porous cage for cells to shield against toxic bactericides including benzaldehyde, cinnamaldehyde, and kanamycin. Notably, the E. coli cells remained alive and could self-reproduce after removing the ZIF-90 crystal cages in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, suggesting a feasible route for protecting and prolonging the lifespan of bacterial cells. Moreover, an aqueous multiple-step deposition approach was developed to improve EE of the E. coli@ZIF-90 composites: the EE increased to 61.9 ± 5.2%, in contrast with the efficiency of the traditional method (21.3 ± 4.4%) prepared with PBS buffer. In short, we develop a simple yet viable strategy to manufacture MOF-based living hybrid materials that promise new applications across diverse fields.

Learning from B12 enzymes: biomimetic and bioinspired catalysts for eco-friendly organic synthesis

Cobalamins (B₁₂) play various important roles in vivo. Most B₁₂-dependent enzymes are divided into three main subfamilies: adenosylcobalamin-dependent isomerases, methylcobalamin-dependent methyltransferases, and dehalogenases. Mimicking these B₁₂ enzyme functions under non-enzymatic conditions offers good understanding of their elaborate reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, bio-inspiration offers a new approach to catalytic design for green and eco-friendly molecular transformations. As part of a study based on vitamin B₁₂ derivatives including heptamethyl cobyrinate perchlorate, we describe biomimetic and bioinspired catalytic reactions with B₁₂ enzyme functions. The reactions are classified according to the corresponding three B₁₂ enzyme subfamilies, with a focus on our recent development on electrochemical and photochemical catalytic systems. Other important reactions are also described, with a focus on radical-involved reactions in terms of organic synthesis.

Integration of Biomolecules with Metal-Organic Frameworks

Owing to the progressive development of metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) synthetic processes and considerable potential applications in last decade, integrating biomolecules into MOFs has recently gain considerable attention. Biomolecules, including lipids, oligopeptides, nucleic acids, and proteins have been readily incorporated into MOF systems via versatile formulation methods. The formed biomolecule-MOF hybrid structures have shown promising prospects in various fields, such as antitumor treatment, gene delivery, biomolecular sensing, and nanomotor device. By optimizing biomolecule integration methods while overcoming existing challenges, biomolecule-integrated MOF platforms are very promising to generate more practical applications.

Electrochemistry and catalytic properties of amphiphilic vitamin B12 derivatives in nonaqueous media

The reduction pathway of cobalester (CN)Cble, an amphiphilic vitamin B12 derivative, was investigated in organic solvents under electrochemical conditions and compared with mono- and dicyanocobyrinates. The redox characteristics were determined using cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical methods. The presence of a nucleotide moiety in B12-derivative impedes the in situ formation of dicyano-species thus facilitating the (CN)Co(iii) to Co(i) reduction. The (CN)Cble shows stepwise reduction to Co(i) via (CN)Co(ii). The reduction of (CN)Co(ii)/Co(i) was found to depend on cyanide-solvent exchange equilibrium with weakly coordinating solvents and bulky peripheral chains promoting intact (CN)Co(ii) species existence. The studied complexes were also utilized as catalysts in bulk electrolysis of benzyl bromide affording bibenzyl in very good yield.
