Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm children have a higher risk for linguistic delays than full-term infants but are rarely provided with language intervention at an early age. Knowledge on early language interventions targeted to preterm children is scarce, and efficacy of the interventions is rarely reported. AIM This systematic review aims to identify interventions for preterm children aged 0-3 years with at least one language outcome. Efficacy of the interventions and quality of the study reports were evaluated. STUDY DESIGN The article search was carried out in six databases: EBSCOhost, Scopus, ERIC, LLBA, Ovid, and Web of Science. Effect sizes (Hedges' g) were calculated for language outcomes. Quality of the study reports was assessed using the levels of evidence system by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. RESULTS The 28 studies identified were divided into three groups: interventions at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, interventions during the first year, and interventions during the second and/or third years. Most of the interventions focused on supporting child-care and general development. Of the interventions, 61 % were efficacious in supporting language development of preterm children. The most promising results regarding efficacy were interventions conducted during the second and/or third years (80 %). Quality of the reports varied from high/good (89 %) to low (11 %). CONCLUSION The 28 existing studies provide limited evidence of the efficacy of very early interventions promoting language development of preterm children. However, especially the results for interventions conducted during the second and/or third years show promise. More studies, particularly language-focused interventions with longer follow-ups, are needed.

Abstract
Preterm birth accounts for about 10% of births worldwide. Studying risk factors for perinatal brain damage is essential, as findings suggest that almost 20% of disabilities are linked to risks in the early stages of development. This research aimed to study longitudinal changes in intelligence from 6 to 8 years of age in a sample of 39 preterm children with a history of risk of brain damage and a control group of 35 children born at term. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale (WISC-IV) was used to measure cognitive ability at six, seven, and eight years old. The results showed that the preterm group obtained significantly lower scores than the control group. The working memory indicator significantly affected the interaction between age and prematurity. We consider it crucial to expand the knowledge we have about the neurocognitive development of premature infants, both in specific cognitive domains and in age ranges, so that the information obtained can help predict the probability of presenting cognitive alterations from early stages. This, therefore, helps in implementing intervention strategies and programs based on scientific evidence, and their design is complemented by clinical experience and empirical and theoretical knowledge of the different professionals involved in infant cognitive intervention.

Abstract
Objective: To systematically review studies examining the effects of home-visiting preventive parenting programs (HV-PPs) on improving the quality of mother-child interactions in early childhood. Method: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol, we identified 3,586 studies published between 2018 and 2022 by searching the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, BVS/LILACS, SciELO, and PsycNET/PsycINFO. After applying the eligibility criteria, 17 articles were selected for review. Results: Most studies were conducted in high-income countries (53%) and the remainder were conducted in upper-middle-income countries, predominantly using a randomized controlled trial design and with strong methodological quality. The 17 studies applied 13 different HV-PPs, predominantly using video feedback, based on various dosages and schedules. Most studies (77%) showed significant positive effects on mother-child interactions by improving mainly positive maternal behaviors (e.g., sensitivity and responsiveness). Positive effects occurred independent of the study design, sample characteristics, measures, and constructs assessed. However, the findings suggest that the combination of fewer than six sessions, durations shorter than three months, and a very early start did not impact mother-child interactions, as expected. Few studies have explored negative maternal behaviors, children's behaviors, and dyadic interactions such as mutuality and synchrony. Conclusions: HV-PPs positively impacted mother-child interactions in early childhood despite the large heterogeneity across program designs, outcome measures, and overlapping constructs. Based on the results, we discuss the practical and economic implications of using parenting programs as a preventive approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm and term small for gestational age (SGA) babies are at high risk of experiencing malnutrition and impaired neurodevelopment. Standalone interventions have modest and sometimes inconsistent effects on growth and neurodevelopment in these babies. For greater impact, intervention may be needed in multiple domains-health, nutrition, and psychosocial care and support. Therefore, the combined effects of an integrated intervention package for preterm and term SGA on growth and neurodevelopment are worth investigating. METHODS An individually randomized controlled trial is being conducted in urban and peri-urban low to middle-socioeconomic neighborhoods in South Delhi, India. Infants are randomized (1:1) into two strata of 1300 preterm and 1300 term SGA infants each to receive the intervention package or routine care. Infants will be followed until 12 months of age. Outcome data will be collected by an independent outcome ascertainment team at infant ages 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months and at 2, 6, and 12 months after delivery for mothers. DISCUSSION The findings of this study will indicate whether providing an intervention that addresses factors known to limit growth and neurodevelopment can offer substantial benefits to preterm or term SGA infants. The results from this study will increase our understanding of growth and development and guide the design of public health programs in low- and middle-income settings for vulnerable infants. TRIAL REGISTRATION The trial has been registered prospectively in Clinical Trial Registry - India # CTRI/2021/11/037881, Registered on 08 November 2021.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Preterm infants are at high risk for developmental disabilities, and their parents are at increased risk for high stress. Early intervention programs are applied to reduce these adverse outcomes. The primary aim is to compare the efficacy of the novel Explorer Baby early intervention program for the holistic development of preterm infants. The second objective was to compare the stress levels of their mothers. METHODS Randomized clinical trial with 38 weeks-6 months corrected age preterm infants at low risk for cerebral palsy, randomly assigned to experimental (Explorer Baby) or active control neurodevelopmental therapy (NDT) groups. Fifty-seven infants were enrolled in the study, and 51 (26 Explorer Baby, 25 NDT) completed it. Bayley III was used as a primary outcome before, during, and after the intervention. RESULTS When we compared the changes between the groups before and after therapy, no significant differences were found in any of the primary or secondary outcomes (between-group comparisons). When comparing the changes in both groups before and after therapy (in-group comparison), the Explorer Baby group demonstrated significant improvements in cognitive (Hedges' g = .83) and explorative language skills (Hedges' g = .65), whereas the NDT group showed improved parent-child dysfunctional interaction (Hedges' g = 2.66) between T0-T1 and T0-T2. CONCLUSIONS The Explorer Baby early intervention program may be a preferred option to support premature infants without brain injury, as it shows greater skill acquisition than NDT, although not statistically significant. Both methods are safe as they support premature babies without negatively affecting mothers' overall stress levels.

Abstract
PURPOSE The primary aim will be to assess the effects of prone positioning (tummy time) on cervical extension (angular kinematics and time) in preterm infants. The secondary aim will be to assess the effects of tummy time on gross motor function. METHODS This randomized, controlled clinical trial will include 40 preterm infants weighing less than 2500 g, randomly allocated into control or experimental group (n = 20) and followed up from birth to six months of corrected age by the team of the neonatal follow-up clinic. Caregivers will be routinely guided on bonding, developmental milestones, and how to perform the tummy time for 30 min throughout the day (experimental group). An illustrative booklet will be provided as support material. The hypothesis will be tested using inferential analysis, considering an alpha of 5%. DISCUSSION We expect tummy time to strengthen cervical muscles needed to overcome gravity, master motor skills, and stimulate the integration between family activity and environmental experiences, considerable challenges to which preterm infants are exposed. TRIAL REGISTRATION Registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (identifier RBR-2nwkr47) on 17 February 2022.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To validate clinically the risk factors of the nursing diagnosis "Risk for delayed child development". METHOD Cross-sectional quantitative study carried out in a specialty outpatient clinic and in family health units with 124 children. The data was collected through interviews with the children's guardians to investigate the risk factors for delay in child development. RESULTS The tested risk factors affected 108 of the evaluated children (87.1%). In the accuracy tests, most specificity values were above 80% and sensitivity values were lower than 30%. Most risk factors had odds ratio >1, three of which were noteworthy: genetic disorder (OR = 38, p < 0.05) and congenital disorder (OR = 4.4, p < 0.05), among child-related aspects, and impaired cognitive development in parents (OR = 27, p < 0.05), among caregiver-related aspects. CONCLUSION The study contributed to a refined diagnostic accuracy, identifying potential associated factors of the evaluated diagnosis.

Abstract
RESUMO O estudo objetivou investigar as associações entre práticas e conhecimentos dos cuidadores e o desempenho motor de crianças de zero a 2 anos de idade. Participaram 53 crianças avaliadas com a Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-2. Seus familiares responderam a dois questionários de cuidados parentais, a Daily Activities of Infant Scale e Knowledge of Infant Development Inventory, e um questionário de nível socioeconômico. Identificaram-se correlações significativas entre desempenho motor e comprimento (p=0,001) e peso atual da criança (p=0,005). Em relação às práticas parentais, correlações significativas foram observadas entre o desempenho motor e posturas durante a alimentação (p≤0,001), banho (p≤0,001), trocas de roupa (p=0,024), sono (p=0,035) e no colo (p=0,001), bem como em brincadeiras tranquilas (p=0,003), ativas (p=0,024) e oportunidades de passeio (p=0,004) da criança. A análise de regressão evidenciou que o modelo com posturas na alimentação, trocas de roupas e brincadeiras explicou 79% da variância no desempenho motor (p<0,001). As oportunidades de trocas posturais durante a alimentação, a higiene do bebê e brincadeiras ativas, influenciaram aquisições de habilidades motoras mais sofisticadas nos primeiros anos de vida.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate 13-year outcomes of a randomized controlled trial of preventive care (VIBeS Plus) for infants born very preterm and their parents and examine whether possible effects of intervention varied by family social risk. STUDY DESIGN Families were randomized to an intervention arm (n = 61) or a standard care arm (n = 59). The intervention was delivered at home by psychologists and physiotherapists over the infants' first year, focusing on infant development and parental mental health. At 13 years corrected age, cognitive, motor, and behavioral outcomes, and parental mental health were assessed. Primary estimands were between-group mean differences, estimated using multiple imputed regression models. RESULTS Follow-up included 81 surviving children (69%). There was little evidence of benefits of the intervention for IQ, attention, executive functioning, working memory, and academic skills regardless of level of social risk. Specifically, mean differences in adolescent cognitive outcomes ranged from -2.0 units (95% CI, -9.9 to 5.9) in favor of standard treatment to 5.1 units (95% CI, -2.3 to 12.5) favoring the intervention. A group-by-social risk interaction was observed only for adolescent motor outcomes, with mean differences favoring the intervention for those at higher social risk (balance, 4.9; 95% CI, 1.3-8.5; total motor, 3.2; 95% CI, 0.3-6.2), but not those at lower social risk (balance, -0.3; 95% CI, -2.4 to 1.9; total motor, 0.03; 95% CI, -1.9 to 2.0). Mean differences in adolescent behavior and parental mental health ranged from -6.6 (95% CI -13.8, 0.5) to -0.2 (95% CI, -1.9 to 1.4) and -1.8 (95% CI, -4.1 to 0.6) to -1.7 (95% CI, -4.3 to 1.0), respectively, indicating a pattern of fewer symptoms in the intervention group. CONCLUSIONS Benefits of the intervention persisted for adolescent behavior, with better motor outcomes observed in those from socially disadvantaged families. Replication with larger samples, multiple informant reports, and assessment of quality of life-related outcomes is warranted. TRIAL REGISTRATION http://www.anzctr.org.au/: ACTRN12605000492651.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The inclusion of families in intervention programs for infants may be more effective in ensuring adherence and positive outcomes. Approaches that include natural and enriched environments that provide communication and family interaction are important in the rehabilitation of high-risk infants. OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of Family Collaborative Approach (FCA) and Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT)-based family training. METHODS High-risk infants (n = 63) with a mean age of 32.60 ± 4.53 months received early intervention for 12 weeks. Prechtl's General movements (GMs) assessment, Hammersmith Neonatal Neurological Examination (HNNE), Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE), BAYLEY-III Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, and Third Addition (BSID-III) were performed. RESULTS Significant differences between groups were found in HINE scores at the 3rd, 6th, and 12th months (p ≤ .028), and in BSID-III scores at the 6th month (cognitive, language, and motor) (p < .001) and the 12th month (language) (p = .031). There was significant difference between NDT and control group in 3rd month HINE scores and Reflex&Reactions scores (p ≤ .021). FCA group and NDT group was significantly different from control group in 6th month HINE (p = .032) and 12th month HINE scores (p = .007). FCA group significantly different from NDT group (p ≤ .002) and control group (p < .001) in 6th month BSID-III cognitive, language, and motor scores. There was significant difference between FCA and control group in 12 month BSID-III language scores (p = .024). CONCLUSIONS Early physiotherapy interventions were effective in high-risk infants and FCA program was superior to NDT.

Abstract
To date, there is no overarching proposition for the ontogenetic-neurobiological basis of self-regulation. This paper suggests that the balanced self-regulatory reaction of the fetus, newborn and infant is based on a complex mechanism starting from early brainstem development and continuing to progressive control of the cortex over the brainstem. It is suggested that this balance occurs through the synchronous reactivity between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, both which originate from the brainstem. The paper presents an evidence-based approach in which molecular excitation-inhibition balance, interchanges between excitatory and inhibitory roles of neurotransmitters as well as cardiovascular and white matter development across gestational ages, are shown to create sympathetic-parasympathetic synchrony, including the postnatal development of electroencephalogram waves and vagal tone. These occur in developmental milestones detectable in the same time windows (sensitive periods of development) within a convergent systematic progress. This ontogenetic stepwise process is termed "the self-regulation clock" and suggest that this clock is located in the largest connection between the brainstem and the cortex, the corticospinal tract. This novel evidence-based new theory paves the way towards more accurate hypotheses and complex studies of self-regulation and its biological basis, as well as pointing to time windows for interventions in preterm infants. The paper also describes the developing indirect signaling between the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the corticospinal tract. Finally, the paper proposes novel hypotheses for molecular, structural and functional investigation of the "clock" circuitry, including its associations with other biological clocks. This complex circuitry is suggested to be responsible for the developing self-regulatory functions and their neurobehavioral correlates.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo: Realizar a validação clínica dos fatores de risco do diagnóstico de Enfermagem “Risco de atraso no desenvolvimento infantil”. Método: Estudo transversal, de abordagem quantitativa, realizado em um ambulatório de especialidades e em unidades de saúde da família, com 124 crianças. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevistas com os responsáveis pelas crianças e investigou os fatores de risco para atraso no desenvolvimento infantil. Resultados: Os fatores de risco sob teste estiveram presentes em 108 crianças avaliadas (87,1%). Nos testes de acurácia, a maioria dos valores de especificidade foi acima de 80%, e os de sensibilidade, inferiores a 30%. A maioria dos fatores de risco teve odds ratio >1, com destaque para três: distúrbio genético (OR = 38, p < 0,05) e distúrbio congênito (OR = 4,4, p < 0,05), entre os aspectos relativos à criança, e o desenvolvimento cognitivo dos pais prejudicado (OR = 27, p < 0,05), entre os aspectos dos cuidadores. Conclusão O estudo contribuiu para o refinamento da acurácia diagnóstica, identificando fatores potencialmente associados ao diagnóstico avaliado.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Maternal sensitivity (MS), the ability to perceive and synchronously respond to the social signals (SSs), is affected by prematurity. The development of early supportive psychotherapy to foster MS, before discharge of the infant from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a major challenge in the prevention of subsequent developmental and mental disorders in the child. There are currently no reliable methods for evaluating MS to social interactions with very to moderate preterm infants. We investigated the reliability of a newly developed procedure for assessing MS in interactions between the mother and her 34- to 36-week postmenstrual age (PMA) preterm infant: the Preterm Infant Coding System for Maternal Sensitivity (PRICOSMAS). METHOD This study encompassed three steps: testing of the capacity to videorecord SSs in very to moderate preterm infants, selection, by an expert committee, of the recordable and relevant SSs, and investigation of the internal consistency and interrater reliability. The synchronicity between infant and mother's SSs was determined on a 1 s period basis, using ELAN software. Preterm infants born after 25-weeks gestational age (GA) were included while being between 34- and 36-weeks PMA. A perinatal risk inventory score > 10 for the infant precluded from inclusion. Interrater reliabilities were assessed independently by two raters blind to the clinical situation of the mother and infant. RESULTS The resulting PRICOSMAS encompassed two four-item SS sections, one covering the preterm infant's SSs and the other, the mother's SSs. Reliability was assessed on a sample of 26 videorecorded observations for 13 mother-preterm infant dyads. Infants' mean age at birth was 30.4 ± 3.1-weeks GA (range: 26.4-35) and PMA at the time of the test was 34.7-weeks (±0.8). Internal consistency ranged from 0.81 to 0.89. Interrater reliability ranged from substantial to almost perfect (0.73-0.88). CONCLUSION This study shows that the infants' SSs and MS can be reliably scored in preterm infants as young as 34- to 36-weeks PMA. Our findings suggest that the PRICOSMAS is sufficiently reliable for use, including in NICU, by healthcare professionals or researchers for coding early parent-infant interactions with 34- to 36-week PMA preterm infants.

Abstract
Moderate to late preterm infants are at risk of developing problems later in life. To support attachment and infants’ development, high quality parent-infant interaction is important. Parent-infant interaction is known to improve through intervention programs but since no such intervention program is addressed directly to moderate to late preterm infants, a tailor-made intervention was developed. The aim was to describe the rationale, development, framework and practical provision of a new early collaborative intervention program. This study has a descriptive design and the intervention is described using the Template for Intervention Description and Replication. During an intervention-session, the preterm infant’s cues are made visible to the parents as they perform an everyday care-taking procedure. Instant feedback is delivered to give the parents the opportunity to notice, interpret and respond to cues immediately. The infant’s response to the parent’s action is discussed in a dialogue to instantly guide parents´ awareness of the preterm infant’s subtle cues. This study describes a new early collaborative intervention, developed to support interaction between parents and their moderate to late preterm infants starting in the neonatal intensive care unit. Abstract
RESUMO O desenvolvimento infantil deve ser promovido pela família com apoio formal na puericultura. O presente estudo analisou o desempenho motor de bebês submetidos à intervenção parental na puericultura. Foi realizado um estudo de série de casos, observacional, longitudinal e descritivo, com 215 bebês de 0-18 meses atendidos em uma Unidade de Atenção Primária em Saúde de uma capital do Nordeste brasileiro. O desempenho motor dos bebês foi avaliado pela Alberta infant motor scale e orientações foram transmitidas aos pais a depender do atraso motor observado. Observou-se que 77,7% dos bebês tiveram seu primeiro atendimento no primeiro semestre de vida, 57,6% apresentaram baixo risco e 76,7% desempenho motor normal. Houve relação significativa entre a estratificação de risco e a idade gestacional e entre a estratificação de risco e o desempenho motor. Os intervalos entre as avaliações variaram de 7-252 dias. A porcentagem de bebês com atrasos motores é maior para os que chegam à puericultura após o terceiro trimestre de vida. Todos os bebês identificados com suspeita de atraso ou como atípicos, que frequentaram a puericultura, melhoraram o desempenho motor até a terceira avaliação. Bebês que são levados precocemente à puericultura, para orientações sobre intervenção parental, recuperam o atraso do desenvolvimento motor, porém muitas famílias não comparecem ao seguimento da puericultura ou chegam tardiamente para atendimento.

Abstract
Functional development of affective and reward circuits, cognition and response inhibition later in life exhibits vulnerability periods during gestation and early childhood. Extensive evidence supports the model that exposure to stressors in the gestational period and early postnatal life increases an individual's susceptibility to future impairments of functional development. Recent versions of this model integrate epigenetic mechanisms of the developmental response. Their understanding will guide the future treatment of the associated neuropsychiatric disorders. A combination of non-invasively obtainable physiological signals and epigenetic biomarkers related to the principal systems of the stress response, the Hypothalamic-Pituitary axis (HPA) and the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), are emerging as the key predictors of neurodevelopmental outcomes. Such electrophysiological and epigenetic biomarkers can prove to timely identify children benefiting most from early intervention programs. Such programs should ameliorate future disorders in otherwise healthy children. The recently developed Early Family-Centered Intervention Programs aim to influence the care and stimuli provided daily by the family and improving parent/child attachment, a key element for healthy socio-emotional adult life. Although frequently underestimated, such biomarker-guided early intervention strategy represents a crucial first step in the prevention of future neuropsychiatric problems and in reducing their personal and societal impact.

Abstract
Resumo Objetivo identificar e analisar as ações de cuidado às crianças nascidas prematuras, após a alta hospitalar, realizadas pelos familiares e profissionais de saúde. Método revisão de escopo, desenvolvida em dezembro de 2019, segundo as orientações do Joanna Briggs Institute e do guia internacional PRISMAScR. Foram investigados estudos originais, publicados em inglês, espanhol ou português, de 2013 a 2019, nas bases CINAHAL, Medline, LILACS, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science. Os 21 artigos incluídos foram submetidos à análise direcionada de conteúdo apoiada pelo referencial das necessidades essenciais das crianças. Resultados predominaram ações para proteção física e segurança (20 artigos), comunidades estáveis e amparadoras (dez artigos), seguidas de relacionamentos sustentadores contínuos (seis artigos), experiências que respeitem as diferenças individuais (quatro artigos) e experiências adequadas ao desenvolvimento (dois artigos). Ações para o estabelecimento de limites, organização e expectativas não foram identificadas nos estudos. Conclusões e implicações para a prática as ações de cuidado contemplam, principalmente, a dimensão física.
