Photodegradation of organic pollutants using N-titanium oxide catalyst

Influence of CoOx surface passivation and Sn/Zr-co-doping on the photocatalytic activity of Fe2O3 nanorod photocatalysts for bacterial inactivation and photo-Fenton degradation

Hydrothermal and wet impregnation methods are presented in this study for synthesizing CoO_x(1 wt%)/Sn-Zr codoped-Fe₂O₃ nanorod photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants and deactivation of bacteria. A hydrothermal route was used to synthesize self-assembled rod-like hierarchical structures of Sn(0-6%) doped Zr-Fe₂O₃ NRs. Additionally, a wet impregnation method was used to load CoO_x onto the surface of photocatalysts (Sn(0-6%)-doped Zr-Fe₂O₃ NRs). A series of 1 wt% CoO_x modified Sn(0-6%)-doped Zr-Fe₂O₃ NRs were synthesized, characterized, and utilized for the photocatalytic decomposition of organic contaminants, along with the killing of E. coli and S. aureus. In comparison with 0, 2, and 6% Sn co-doped Zr-Fe₂O₃ NRs, the CoO_x(1 wt%)/4%Sn/Zr-Fe₂O₃ NRs photocatalyst exhibited an E. coli and S. aureus inactivation efficiencies (90 and 98%). A bio-TEM study of treated and untreated bacterial cells revealed that the CoO_x(1 wt%)/4%Sn/Zr-Fe₂O₃ NRs photocatalyst led to considerable changes in the bacterial cell membranes' morphology. The optimal CoO_x(1 wt%)/Sn(4%) co-doped Zr-Fe₂O₃ NRs photocatalyst achieved degradation efficiencies of 98.5% and 94.6% for BPA and orange II dye. As a result, this work will provide a facile and effective method for developing visible light-active photocatalysts for bacterial inactivation and organic pollutants degradation.

Efficient Oxygen Vacancy Defect Engineering for Enhancing Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance over SnO2-x Ultrafine Nanocrystals

Regardless of its good electron-transfer ability and chemical stability, pure Zn₂SnO₄ (ZSO) still has intrinsic deficiencies of a narrow spectral response region, poor absorption ability, and high photo-activated carrier recombination rate. Aiming to overcome the deficiencies above-mentioned, we designed a facile hydrothermal route for etching ZSO nanoparticles in a dilute acetic acid solution, through which efficient oxygen vacancy defect engineering was accomplished and SnO_2-x nanocrystals were obtained with an ultrafine particle size. In comparison with the untreated ZSO nanoparticles, the specific surface area of SnO_2-x nanocrystals was substantially enlarged, subsequently leading to the notable augmentation of active sites for the photo-degradation reaction. Aside from the above, it is worth noting that SnO_2-x nanocrystals were endowed with a broad spectral response, enhancing light absorption capacity and the photo-activated carrier transfer rate with the aid of oxygen vacancy defect engineering. Accordingly, SnO_2-x nanocrystals exhibited significantly enhanced photoactivity toward the degradation of the organic dye rhodamine B (RhB), which could be imputed to the synergistic effect of increasing active sites, intensified visible-light harvesting, and the separation rate of the photo-activated charge carrier caused by the oxygen vacancy defect engineering. In addition, these findings will inspire us to open up a novel pathway to design and prepare oxide compound photocatalysts modified by oxygen vacancy defects in pursuing excellent visible-light photoactivity.

Tridoped TiO2 Composite Films for Improved Photocatalytic Activities

The Fe/B/F tridoped TiO2-ZnO composite films attached to glass substrates were prepared via a simple sol–gel method. We appraised all samples’ photocatalytic activities by the degradation of methyl green and formaldehyde solutions. The samples were characterized by photoluminescence (PL) spectra, UV-Vis diffraction reflectance absorption spectra (DRS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetry (DTA-TG), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Brunner–Emmet–Teller (BET) measurements. According to the results of DRS and PL spectroscopy, the multi-modification could not only enhance visible light absorption intensity, but also decrease the recombination rate of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. XRD results revealed that the sample was mainly in anatase crystal type. FE-SEM results shown that the sample had fewer particle aggregates and almost no cracks. The specific surface area of the Fe/B/F tridoped TiO2-ZnO was 104.9 m2·g−1, while that of the pure TiO2 was 84.0 m2·g−1. Compared to pure TiO2 and TiO2-ZnO, the Fe/B/F tridoped TiO2-ZnO composite film had the highest photocatalytic activity due to their synergies.

Recent advances based on the synergetic effect of adsorption for removal of dyes from waste water using photocatalytic process

The problem of textile dye pollution has been addressed by various methods, mainly physical, chemical, biological, and acoustical. These methods mainly separate and/or remove the dye present in water. Recently, advanced oxidation processes (AOP) have been focused for removal of dye from waste water due to their advantages such as ecofriendly, economic and capable to degrade many dyes or organic pollutant present in water. Photocatalysis is one of the advance oxidation processes, mainly carried out under irradiation of light and suitable photocatalytic materials. The photocatalytic activity of the photocatalytic materials mainly depends on the band gap, surface area, and generation of electron-hole pair for degradation dyes present in water. It has been observed that the surface area plays a major role in photocatalytic degradation of dyes, by providing higher surface area, which leads to the higher adsorption of dye molecule on the surface of photocatalyst and enhances the photocatalytic activity. This present review discusses the synergic effect of adsorption of dyes on the photocatalytic efficiency of various nanostructured high surface area photocatalysts. In addition, it also provides the properties of the water polluting dyes, their mechanism and various photocatalytic materials; and their morphology used for the dye degradation under irradiation of light along with the future prospects of highly adsorptive photocatalytic material and their application in photocatalytic removal of dye from waste water.
