Abstract
Schiff bases are compounds that are widely distributed in nature and have practical value for industry and biomedicine. Another important use of Schiff bases is identifying metal ions and different molecules, including proteins. Their proneness to hydrolysis limits the utilization of Schiff bases to mainly non-aqueous solutions. However, by introducing -OH and -SH substituents to aromatic amine-bearing rings, it is possible to increase the resilience of the Schiff base to destruction in water. The present paper discusses how the hydroxyl or thiol group influences the spectral properties and kinetics of the hydrolysis and formation of Schiff bases derived from pyridoxal 5'-phosphate and aniline, 2-hydroxyaniline, and 2-mercaptoaniline using quantum chemical data. The spectral variation between different imines can be explained by taking into account the geometry and frontier molecular orbital alteration induced by the substituents. The changes in the hydrolysis rate are analyzed using the computed values of local reactivity indices.

Abstract
In this paper, we have design, synthesized and fully characterized a new meso-fluorescein substituted one-walled calix[4]pyrrole (C4P7), obtained from simple and easily available starting materials such as fluorescein, 4-hydroxyacetophenone and pyrrole. The anion sensing studies reveal that the C4P7 system displays selective and sensitive naked-eye sensing towards fluoride, phosphate, and acetate anions with the limit of detection of 4.27 mg L-1, 6.4 mg L-1, and 5.94 mg L-1, respectively. Moreover, the C4P7 receptor displays good results of binding (host-guest, 1 : 1) towards a variety of anions. The 1 : 1 binding stoichiometry was further confirmed by means of Job's plots. TD-DFT calculations showed that the HOMO-LUMO gap decreases in all the complexes (C4P7@anions) in comparison to the free C4P7 system. The authors are of the opinion that this work may provide a good platform to explore calix[4]pyrrole chemistry in the arena of recognition/sensing of biologically significant analytes in future studies.

Abstract
The present paper reports on the synthesis and characterization of a new chemosensor for fluoride ions, a hydrazone derived from pyridoxal 5'-phosphate and benzothiazole. The structure of the chemosensor was confirmed using 1H and 13C NMR, FT-IR and mass spectroscopy. The conformational diversity of the chemosensor influencing the sensor activity was studied by the quantum chemistry methods on the B3LYP/6-311++G(d, p) (H, C, N, O, P, S) level, and the optimal structure of the chemosensor was chosen. The selective capability of detecting F- in the aqueous solution, which also contains Cl-, Br-, I-, NCS-, ClO4-, HSO4-, and NO3- was demonstrated. The detection limit (LOD) for fluoride ions was 0.22 µM as determined by the 3σ method. The turn-on effect in the presence of fluoride ions is based on the deprotonation of the chemosensor and its subsequent aggregation in DMSO. In addition, the chemosensor was used for the detection and estimation of F- in real samples using fluorescence spectroscopy.

Selective Recognition and Reversible “Turn-Off” Fluorescence Sensing of Acetate (CH3COO−) Anion at Ppb Level Using a Simple Quinizarin Fluorescent Dye. CHEMISTRY 2022. [DOI: 10.3390/chemistry4040092] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/29/2022] Open
Abstract
A simple and cost-effective optical sensing system based on quinizarin fluorescent dye (QZ) for the selective and reversible sensing of CH3COO− anions is reported. The anion binding affinity of QZ towards different anions was monitored using electronic absorption and fluorescence emission titration studies in DMSO. The UV-visible absorption spectrum of QZ showed a decrease in the intensity of the characteristic absorption peaks at λ = 280, 323, and 475 nm, while a new peak appeared at λ = 586 nm after the addition of CH3COO− anions. Similarly, the initial strong emission intensity of QZ was attenuated following titration with CH3COO− anions. Notably, similar titration using other anions, such as F−, Cl−, I−, NO3−, NO2−, and H2PO4-, caused no observable changes in both absorption and emission spectra. The selective sensing of CH3COO− anions was also reflected by a sharp visual color change from bright green to faint green under room light. Further, the binding was found to be reversible, and this makes QZ a potential optical and colorimetric sensor for selective, reversible, and ppb-level detection of CH3COO− anions in a DMSO medium.

Abstract
The detection of albumin proteins with high accuracy by facile analytical approaches is important for the diagnosis of various diseases. This manuscript introduced an easy-to-prepare Schiff base L by condensing vitamin B6 cofactor pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) with 2-aminothiophenol for the fluorescence turn-on sensing of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ovalbumin (OVA). The weakly emissive L showed a significant fluorescence enhancement at 485 and 490 nm in the presence of OVA and BSA with an estimated sensitivity limit of 1.7 µM and 0.3 µM, respectively. The formation of protein-ligand complex restricted the free intramolecular rotation of L is expected to show the selective fluorescence enhancement. The molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations were performed to examine the binding affinity and modes between BSA/OVA and L. The practical utility of L as a fluorescent turn-on sensor was validated by quantifying BSA and OVA in various real biological samples of milk, serum, egg white and urine with good recovery percentages.

Abstract
Three new probes, named, [Cu(L1)2]Cl2 (C1), [Cu(L2)2]Cl2 (C2) and [Cu(L3)2]Cl2 (C3) were synthesized and well characterized. The probes C1, C2 and C3 were successfully achieved for the efficient detection of PO43- as turn-on fluorescence chemosensors in DMSO/H2O (v:v = 2:8, Tris-HCl pH = 7.20). The limit of detection (LOD) of probes C1, C2 or C3 for PO43- could be as low as 0.029 μM, 0.048 μM, 0.079 μM, respectively, which were effectively applied for the determination of the PO43- concentration in environmental water of swimming pool. What's more, the binding constant between probes C1, C2, C3 and PO43- are estimated to be 3.11 × 107 M-1 (R2 = 0.9992), 1.84 × 107 M-1 (R2 = 0.9956), 1.93 × 107 M-1 (R2 = 0.9976), respectively. The proposed mechanism for the "on-off-on" fluorescence response was confirmed by ESI-MS and fluorescence spectrum. Moreover, the membrane-permeable probe C1 was successfully demonstrated in monitoring of PO43- in cultured HepG2 cells.

Abstract
This communication reports the application of rhodamine 6G hydrazide (L) for the selective colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent sensing of hydrogen sulphate ions from aqueous medium. The ring opening of the colourless spirocyclic form of L was selectively triggered in the presence of HSO4- among the other tested anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO-, H2PO4-, NO3-, ClO4-, CN-, HO-, AsO33- and SO42-), which gives rise to a pink colour and strong fluorescence in the visible region. Sensor L showed a detection limit down to micromolar range without any interference from the other tested competitive anions. Sensor L was applied for the construction of two inputs (HO- and HSO4-) INHIBIT type molecular logic gate and naked-eye detection of HSO4- using test paper strips.

Abstract
Two new Schiff base receptors have been synthesized by condensation of pyridoxal-5-phosphate with 2-aminophenol (L(1)) or aniline (L(2)). In DMSO, the receptors showed both chromogenic and 'turn-on' fluorescence responses selectively in the presence of AcO(-) and F(-). However, in mixed DMSO-H2O medium, the receptors showed AcO(-) selective 'turn-on' fluorescence without any interference from other tested anions including F(-). The detection limit for AcO(-) was found to be 7.37 μM and 22.9 μM using the receptors L(1) and L(2), respectively.

Chemosensor L derived from vitamin B6 cofactor pyridoxal-5-phosphate was investigated for the selective detection of Cu(2+) and Fe(3+) in aqueous medium. Sensor L formed a 1:1 complex with Cu(2+) and displays a perceptible color change from colorless to yellow brown with the appearance of a new charge transfer band at ~450 nm. In contrast, the fluorescence of L was quenched selectively in the presence of Fe(3+) without any interference from other metal ions including Cu(2+).

Abstract
C3v-Symmetric anion receptors 3 and 4 with urethane groups were synthesized by using trindane triol as tripodal molecular framework. In (1)H NMR titration study, the receptors showed noticeable downfield shift/disappearance of the urethane-NH peak in presence of H2PO4(-) and F(-) due to the host-guest complexation occurred through multiple hydrogen bonding and/or the deprotonation of urethane-NH groups. Other tested anions such as Cl(-), Br(-), HSO4(-), and NO3(-) showed either no or negligible chemical shift of the urethane groups. The deprotonation event in 4 allowed selective detection of F(-) by perceptible color change from colorless to yellowish-red with the appearance of a new charge transfer absorption band at 450 nm.
