Abstract
The rapid growth in population and industrialization has given rise to serious environmental issues, especially the water pollution. Photocatalysis with the assist of semiconductor photocatalysts has been considered as an advanced oxidation technique for degrading a variety of pollutants under solar irradiation. In this work, we have fabricated SnO2-TiO2 heterostructures with different ordered layers of SnO2 and TiO2 via the sol-gel dip-coating technique and utilized in photocatalysis for degradation of methyl blue dye under UV irradiation. The influence of the layer's position on SnO2 and TiO2 properties is investigated via the various techniques. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) analysis reveals that the as-prepared films exhibit pure anatase TiO2 and kesterite SnO2 phases. The 2SnO2/2TiO2 heterostructure exhibit the maximum crystallite size and smallest deviation from the ideal structure. Scanning electron microscopy cross-section images manifest good adhesion of the layers to each other and to the substrate. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals the characteristic vibration modes of SnO2 and TiO2 phases. UV-visible spectroscopy measurements indicate that all films exhibit high transparency (T = 80%) and the SnO2 film reveals a direct band gap of 3.6 eV, while the TiO2 film exhibits an indirect band gap of 2.9 eV. The optimal 2SnO2/2TiO2 heterostructure film revealed best photocatalytic degradation performance and the reaction rate constant for methylene blue solution under UV irradiation. This work will trigger the development of highly efficient heterostructure photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract
Water pollution is a global issue as a consequence of rapid industrialization and urbanization. Organic compounds which are generated from various industries produce problematic pollutants in water. Recently, metal oxide (TiO2, SnO2, CeO2, ZrO2, WO3, and ZnO)-based semiconductors have been explored as excellent photocatalysts in order to degrade organic pollutants in wastewater. However, their photocatalytic performance is limited due to their high band gap (UV range) and recombination time of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Strategies for improving the performance of these metal oxides in the fields of photocatalysis are discussed. To improve their photocatalytic activity, researchers have investigated the concept of doping, formation of nanocomposites and core-shell nanostructures of metal oxides. Rare-earth doped metal oxides have the advantage of interacting with functional groups quickly because of the 4f empty orbitals. More precisely, in this review, in-depth procedures for synthesizing rare earth doped metal oxides and nonocomposites, their efficiency towards organic pollutants degradation and sources have been discussed. The major goal of this review article is to propose high-performing, cost-effective combined tactics with prospective benefits for future industrial applications solutions.

Novel polypropylene-TiO 2:Bi spherical floater for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of the recalcitrant 2,4,6-TCP herbicide. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2023; 329:117057. Abstract
In this work, spherical photocatalytic floaters were fabricated by depositing TiO2:Bi (TBi) particles on polypropylene (PP) spheres (recycled from beer cans). These particles were deposited on the sphere (TBi-sphere) by the spray coating technique and evaluated their performance for the photocatalytic degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) herbicide. SEM images demonstrated that the BTi powders consisted in conglomerated grains with sizes of 20-80 nm and the analysis by X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of rutile and anatase phases in the BTi. The photocatalytic experiments showed that the TBi and TBi-sphere produced maximum degradation of 90 and 97% for 2,4,6-TCP, respectively, after 4 h under UV-Vis light. The photocatalytic powders/composites were reused 3 times and the loss of degradation efficiency was 3 and 16% for the TBi powder and TBi-sphere, respectively. This means that the TBi-sphere is more stable for the continuous degradation of the 2,4,6-TCP contaminant. The TiO2:Bi powder was compared with the commercial TiO2 (P25) and found that the TiO2:Bi powder had higher light absorption (≈42%) and higher surface area (≈105%) than the P25. Therefore, the degradation percentage for the 2,4,6-TCP was 52% higher in the sample doped with Bi. Also, scavenger experiments were carried out and found that the main oxidizing agents produced for the degradation of 2,4,6-TCP were •OH- radicals and •O2- anions. Other species such as h+ were also produced at lower amount. Hence, our results demonstrated that spherical/floatable photocatalytic composites are a viable option to remove herbicide residuals from the water, which is of interest in water-treatment-plants.

An eco-friendly and sustainable support of agave-fibers functionalized with graphene/TiO2:SnO2 for the photocatalytic degradation of the 2,4-D herbicide from the drinking water. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2022; 317:115514. Abstract
In this research, we evaluated the photocatalytic performance of biodegradable composites for the removal of the 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) herbicide. The composite was composed by agave fibers (AgF), graphene-microplates (GM) and titanium dioxide TiO2/SnO2 (TSn) nanoparticles (NPs) and was named TSn + AgF/GM. Both, the TSn NPs and the GM were deposited on the AgF using the Dip-coating method. According to the analysis by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), the crystalline phase for the TiO2 and SnO2 was anatase and tetragonal-rutile, respectively. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images demonstrated that the AgF were completely saturated by the GM (which had average dimensions of 15 μm × 22 μm) and by conglomerations of TSn NPs with average size of 642 nm. The TSn NPs and the TSn + AgF/GM composite were evaluated for the photocatalytic degradation of the 2,4-D herbicide under ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) light and found a maximum degradation of 98.4 and 93.7% (after 4 h) for the TSn NPs and the TSn + AgF/GM composite, respectively. Reuse cycles were also performed and the degradation percentage decreased by 13.1% and by 7.8% (after 3 cycles of reuse) when the TSn NPs and the TSn + AgF/GM composite are employed, respectively. Scavenger experiments were also carried out and found that the oxidizing agents are mainly produced in the order of: •OH>•O2- > h+; then, the main oxidizing agents generated during the photocatalytic reaction were the hydroxyl radicals. Thus, the photocatalytic system studied in this work for the degradation of 2,4-D could pave the way for the development of new eco-friendly/floatable photocatalysts, which can be applied in wastewater-treatment plants.

Abstract
Industrialization, civilization and human activities have all grown steadily in recent years. As a result, small and large industries discharge many organic pollutants into the environment and contribute to environmental pollution. These compounds are quite stable and challenging to break down over time, posing a long-term risk. The heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes technology has gained tremendous attention. It depends on the light-induced formation of e-/h+ pairs, which combine with water and aqueous oxygen to generate highly reactive hydroxyl radicals that degrade the organic pollutants in a solution and convert them ultimately into non-toxic products. In this paper, the synergetic impact of TiO2-SnO2 coupling with other semiconductor materials and their photodegradation performance on toxic contaminants in an aqueous medium has been reviewed. In addition, multiple approaches for the synthesis of TiO2-SnO2 photocatalysts have been discussed. Among them, hydrothermal, sol-gel, electrospinning, precipitation and even their combination are extensively used to synthesize various forms of nanostructures. These techniques demonstrate better tunability for visible absorption, suppression of e-/h+ pair recombination and enhanced e-/h+ separation to improve photocatalytic performance. This paper also summarises the role of different operating factors such as catalyst loading, pH, pollutants variation concentration, various light sources and oxidizing agents on the photodegradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalysis using titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) has been widely studied in various applications, including organic pollutant remediation in aqueous systems. The popularity of these materials is based on their high photocatalytic activity, strong photosensitivity, and relatively low cost. However, their commercial application has been limited by their wide bandgaps, inability to absorb visible light, fast electron/hole recombination, and limited recyclability since the nanomaterial is difficult to recover. Researchers have developed several strategies to overcome these limitations. Chief amongst these is the coupling of different semi-conductor materials to produce heterojunction nanocomposite materials, which are both visible-light-active and easily recoverable. This review focuses on the advances made in the development of magnetic ferrite-based titanium oxide and zinc oxide nanocomposites. The physical and magnetic properties of the most widely used ferrite compounds are discussed. The spinel structured material had superior catalytic and magnetic performance when coupled to TiO2 and ZnO. An assessment of the range of synthesis methods is also presented. A comprehensive review of the photocatalytic degradation of various priority organic pollutants using the ferrite-based nanocomposites revealed that degradation efficiency and magnetic recovery potential are dependent on factors such as the chemical composition of the heterojunction material, synthesis method, irradiation source, and structure of pollutant. It should be noted that very few studies have gone beyond the degradation efficiency studies. Very little information is available on the extent of mineralization and the subsequent formation of intermediate compounds when these composite catalysts are used. Additionally, potential degradation mechanisms have not been adequately reported.

Abstract
Anisotropic one-dimensional (1D)-particles with a SnO2 "head", a TiO2 "tail", and self-assembled three-dimensional (3D)-microspheres were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. At the first stage of the reaction, an amorphous TiO2 layer is deposited on the SnO2 surface. At the second stage, rutile nuclei are generated in the amorphous TiO2 layer. At the third stage, a single TiO2 nanorod grows from a SnO2 particle with a heteroepitaxial relation of TiO2(001)//SnO2(001). Finally, the resulting 1D-anisotropic hybrid particles are self-assembled to form a radial 3D-microsphere with the SnO2 head oriented in the central direction.

Abstract
Clean and safe water is fundamental for human and environmental health. Traditional remediation of textile dye-polluted water with chemical, physical, and biological processes has many disadvantages. Due to this, nano-engineered materials are drawing more attention to this area. However, the widespread use of nano-particles for this purpose may lead to photocatalytic degradation of xenobiotics, while increasing the risk of nano-particle-induced ecotoxicity. Therefore, we comparatively evaluated the toxicity of novel synthesized core@shell TiO2 and SiO2 nano-particles to embryonic stages of Danio rerio and Xenopus laevis. The ability of photocatalytic destruction of the synthesized nano-particles was tested using toxic azo dye, disperse red 65, and the effects of reducing the toxicity were evaluated. The reflux process was used to synthesize catalysts in the study. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, BET surface area, and UV-vis-diffuse reflectance spectra. It was determined that the synthesized nano-particles had no significant toxic effect on D. rerio and X. laevis embryos. On the other hand, photocatalytic degradation of the dye significantly reduced lethal effects on embryonic stages of the organisms. Therefore, we suggest that specific nano-particles may be useful for water remediation to prevent human health and environmental impact. However, further risk assessment should be conducted for the ecotoxicological risks of nano-particles spilled in aquatic environments and the relationship of photocatalytic interaction with nano-particles and xenobiotics.
