Abstract
Silver is extensively used in electronics, industrial catalysis, and biomedical sector owing to its enhanced physicochemical properties. E-waste recycling may contribute significantly to enhance silver recovery in the view of a circular economy and limit the depletion of mineral sources. In this scenario, hydrometallurgical routes represent the most widely used techniques for silver extraction/recovery and require strong acidic solutions, high temperatures, and multiple operating units. An alternative sustainable route for silver recovery from leaching solutions used for silver extraction in industrial applications is herein proposed for the first time. The novel green process of silver recovery is based on the UV/vis light-driven photocatalytic deposition of pure metallic silver over low-cost and non-toxic ZnO photocatalyst. In the second step, ZnO is dissolved by slight acidification and pure metallic silver is easily recovered. Low environmental impact, mild operating conditions, and economic viability are among the major perks of the new silver recovery process developed. In the view of a full-scale implementation, several operating conditions of the recovery process (i.e., photocatalyst load, starting silver concentration, type of hole scavenger and irradiation) were thoroughly investigated. A mathematical model capable of describing the system behaviour under different operating conditions was also developed and allowed to estimate unknown kinetic parameters for the Ag-photodeposition process.

Abstract
In pursuit of advanced heterogeneous photocatalysts, ZnO has emerged as a promising option for solar-driven heterogeneous photocatalyst with many advantageous properties (e.g., optical band structure and electronic properties). However, as the efficacy of such system can also be limited by a number of demerits (e.g., fast recombination of charge carriers and limited photon absorption), considerable efforts are needed for its effective and practical scale-up. This article provides a detailed literature review of the synthesis and modification of ZnO nanostructures with tuned band structures and controllable morphologies for solar light harvesting. The potential of anisotropic ZnO nanostructures is also discussed with respect to the photocatalytic degradation of organic/inorganic water pollutants. Further, the role of various metal dopants is discussed for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity along with evaluation of their photocatalytic performances under UV-visible or solar irradiation. Finally, our discussions are expanded to describe the prospects of developed ZnO nano-photocatalysts for real-world applications with respect to light-harvesting efficiency and mechanical stability.

Abstract
A series of ZnO and ZnO/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) catalysts were prepared using sol–gel method. An X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the existence of the wurtzite ZnO phase, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation revealed the formation of spherical ZnO and ZnO/PVA nanoparticles. The decomposition of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) induced by the synthesized pure ZnO and ZnO/PVA nanoparticles was studied under ultraviolet–visible irradiation. Among the catalysts evaluated, ZnO/5PVA was the most active in the decomposition of MB, whereas ZnO/7PVA was the most active catalyst in the decomposition of MO. Moreover, an investigation of the biological activity of pure ZnO and ZnO/PVA indicated that ZnO/5PVA exhibited the best performance in lowering the glucose level in diabetic rats.

Abstract
In this work, morphology-controlled ZnO structures were prepared via a hydrothermal method by simple adjustments in the NaOH concentration. The NaOH concentration variation from 0.2 to 1.2 M resulted in the formation of ZnO structures in shapes such as walnut, spherical flower, flower, rod, and urchin-like. The extent of OH- ions is the main factor influencing the growth of ZnO structures. Well-defined morphologies, good crystallinity, and optical properties were obtained for all ZnO structures. Among these ZnO structures, ZnOsf (spherical flower-like) structure showed a greater percentage of photodegradation of methyl orange and rhodamine B dyes. Surface plasmon resonance was achieved by modifying the surface of ZnO with Ag nanoparticles. ZnOsf was loaded with Ag nanoparticles by a facile photo-deposition method. Ag-ZnOsf showed superior photoactivity and recyclability for the degradation of methyl orange and rhodamine B. Therefore, modification of different ZnO structures can help realize potential catalysts for future environmental applications.

Abstract
The present study focuses on extract-mediated Ag nanoparticles (NPs), AgCl-NPs, and Ag/AgCl nanocomposites (NCs) as photocatalysts along with its antimicrobial and dye degradation activities. The synthesis of these NPs and NCs was performed by using Azadirachta indica plant fruit extract and analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy to confirm the synthesis and band gap of these NPs and NCs, X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine its size and crystalline nature. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to discern phytochemicals, responsible for the reduction and capping of the synthesized NCs. Scanning electron microscopy analysis (SEM), transmission electron microscopy analysis (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy analysis were performed to validate the morphology and presence of silver and chloride percentage in the composites. Later, these NPs and NCs were used for their potential role in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus of human pathogen. The prepared Ag/AgCl-NCs exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activities in comparison with pure Ag and AgCl nanomaterials. However, green-synthesized NPs and NCs played dual roles as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent in various biomedical and industrial sectors. Moreover, we found that it might be a hot research in many other environmental applications in upcoming days.

Abstract
Silver-based hybrid nanomaterials are receiving increasing attention as potential alternatives for traditional antimicrobial agents. Here, we proposed a simple and eco-friendly strategy to efficiently assemble zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on sericin-agarose composite film to impart superior antimicrobial activity. Based on a layer-by-layer self-assembly strategy, AgNPs and ZnO were immobilized on sericin-agarose films using the adhesion property of polydopamine. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy were used to show the morphology of AgNPs and ZnO on the surface of the composite film and analyze the composition and structure of AgNPs and ZnO, respectively. Water contact angle, swelling ratio, and mechanical property were determined to characterize the hydrophilicity, water absorption ability, and mechanical properties of the composite films. In addition, the antibacterial activity of the composite film was evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The results showed that the composite film not only has desirable hydrophilicity, high water absorption ability, and favorable mechanical properties but also exhibits excellent antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It has shown great potential as a novel antimicrobial biomaterial for wound dressing, artificial skin, and tissue engineering.

Abstract
Mnx - ZnO(1-x) nanopowders were successfully synthesised through a simple sol-gel method. The samples were annealed at 300 °C to enhance their crystallinity. The lattice structure, morphology and optical properties of the prepared powdered samples were extensively studied using different characterization techniques, confirming the formation of Mnx - ZnO(1-x). The inclusion of Mn did not cause any change to the wurtzite structure of ZnO; however slight peak shifting and increase in lattice parameters were indicated. The normal absorption spectra pointed to a cut-off edge extending beyond the UV region and a Burstein- Moss type band gap broadening induced by the Mn doping. ZnO showed excellent photodegradation activity against methylene blue (MB) upon UV irradiation. Intensifying the dopant concentration resulted in further diminution of photoactivity against MB. This reduction of photocatalytic activity of ZnO upon doping can be drawn to be due to the presence of Mn in the ZnO lattice, which acted as recombination sites for the photogenerated charge carriers. The results demonstrated that doping ZnO with Mn can be used to suppress the oxidative stress induced by reduced oxygen species (ROS) through generation of recombination centres. The suppression of toxic ROS generation implies possible application in fabrics and ointments for UV shielding applications.

Abstract
Photocatalytic technology aiming to eliminate organic pollutants in water has been rapidly developed. In this work, we successfully synthesized CuWO4/ZnO photocatalysts with different weight ratios of CuWO4 through facile hydrothermal treatment. Crystal structures, forms, and optical properties of these as-prepared materials were investigated and analyzed. 3% CuWO4/ZnO showed the optimum photodegradation efficiency toward methylene blue under the irradiation of simulated sunlight for 120 min, the degradation rate of which was 98.9%. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of 3% CuWO4/ZnO was ∼11.3 and ∼3.5 times bigger than that of pristine CuWO4 and ZnO, respectively. Furthermore, the material exhibited high stability and reusability after five consecutive photocatalytic tests. In addition, free radical capture experiments were conducted and the possible mechanism proposed explained that the synergistic effect between CuWO4 and ZnO accelerates the photodegradation reaction. This work provides a feasible technical background for the efficient and sustainable utilization of photocatalysts in wastewater control.

Abstract
Plasmonic metal/semiconductor composites have attracted great attention for efficient solar energy harvesting in photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications owing to their extremely high visible-light absorption and tuned effective band gap. In this work, Ag-loaded TiO2 nanocolumn (Ag-TNC) arrays were fabricated based on anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by combining atomic layer deposition (ALD) and vacuum evaporation. The effects of the Ag loading position and deposition thickness, and the morphology, structure and composition of Ag-deposited TNC arrays on its optical and photocatalytic properties were studied. The Ag-filled TiO2 (AFT) nanocolumn arrays exhibited higher removal efficiency of methylene blue (MB) compared with Ag-coated TiO2 (ACT) nanocolumn arrays and pure TiO2 nanocolumns arrays. Both experimental and theoretical simulation results demonstrated that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of AFT nanocolumn arrays was attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag and the absorption of light by TiO2. These results represent a promising step forward to the development of high-performance photocatalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract
Ag and Ni/ZnO photocatalyst nanostructures were successfully synthesized by a sol-gel method. In this work, the photocatalyst sample was systematically studied based on several factors affecting the performance of photocatalyst, which are size, morphology, band gap, textural properties and the number of active sites presence on the surface of the nanocatalyst. X-ray diffraction revealed that Ag/ZnO nanomaterials experienced multiple phases, meanwhile for Ni/ZnO the phase of nanomaterials were pure and single phase for stoichiometry less than 5%. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) showed almost all of the synthesized nanomaterials possessed a mixture of nanorods and spherical-like shape morphology. The Ag/ZnO showed high photocatalytic activity, producing at least 14th trials of nanocatalyst reusability on degradation of methyl orange under UV irradiation. Interestingly, this phenomenon was not observed in larger surface area of Ni/ZnO nanomaterials which supposedly favour photocatalytic activity, but instead producing poor photocatalytic performance. The main reasons were studied and exposed by temperature-programmed desorption of carbon dioxide (TPD-CO2) which showed that incorporation of Ag into ZnO lattice has enhanced the number of active sites on the surface of the nanocatalyst. Whereas incorporation of Ni in ZnO has lowered the number of active sites with respect to undoped ZnO. Active sites measurement is effective and significant, providing opportunities in developing an intensive study as an additional factor.

Abstract
Iron (III) was incorporated, to the surface of a synthesized ZnO, using two nominal molar percentages of Fe (III): 1% and 5% Fe relative to ZnO. Samples dried and calcined at 200 °C and 400 °C for 2 h, were characterized by XRD, XPS, XRF, N2-adsorption-BET and (UV-vis)-DRS. Photocatalytic activities of the catalysts were assessed based on the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and caffeine (CAF) in aqueous solution under two irradiation conditions: UV and visible light illumination. Prior to the photocatalytic tests, the interaction of each one of the substrates with either Fe(III) or Fe(II) was studied in homogeneous medium under UV-illumination and oxygenated environment. It was found that Fe (III) can play an important role in homogeneous media in the photoassisted degradation, both of rhodamine B and caffeine, while Fe (II) does not exert a relevant role in the photoassisted degradation of the referred substrates. Fe-ZnO samples display similar or poorer performance than pure ZnO in the presence of UV light for both studied substrates. The phenomenon can be attributed to the formation of either goethite or ZnFe2O4 at the ZnO surface where the coupled Fe3+/Fe2+ can act as recombination centers for the photogenerated charges. On the contrary, all Fe-ZnO samples showed enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible illumination which seems to be independent of the iron content. Abstract
The green mechanism for the synthesis of nanoparticles and their application to the wastewater treatment is of inordinate curiosity to the research community. Herein we outline a novel method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles via a green route using alginate-guar gum blend (GG-Alg@Ag) and their application to degrade methylene blue (MB) dye. The synthesized material was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, TGA-DTG, AFM, and UV-vis techniques. A combination of RSM and CCD was employed to compute the system and optimized values of various interacting parameters such as exposure time (120 min), pH (4.98), dye concentration (194 mg L−1), and catalyst dose (0.07 g) with a photodegradation capacity of 92.33% and desirability 1.0. The mechanism of degradation reaction was best elucidated by the pseudo-second-order model suggesting chemical deposition of MB on the GG-Alg@Ag surface through followed by the reduction mechanism in the occupancy of visible light. The optical studies indicated a value of 2.5 eV by Tauc's plot for bandgap energy (Eg) for GG-Alg@Ag bionanocomposite. The green mechanism for the synthesis of nanoparticles and their application to the wastewater treatment is of inordinate curiosity to the research community.![]()

Abstract
The parameters for metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) processes significantly influence the properties of ZnO films, especially the flow stability of the chamber, which is caused by process parameters such as the shape of reaction chamber, the working pressure, the growth temperature, the susceptor rotational speed, the gas flow rate, and the nature of the carrier gas at inlet temperature. These parameters are the preconditions for the formation of high-quality film. Therefore, this study uses Ar as a carrier gas, diethylzinc (DEZn) as a Zn source, and H₂O as an oxygen source and adopts the reaction mechanism calculated by quantum chemistry, which includes ten gas reactions and eight surface reactions. The process parameters of a specific reaction chamber model were analyzed based on the computational fluid dynamics method. This study also presents an accurate prediction of the flow regime in the reactor chamber under any operating conditions, without additional experiments, based on an analysis of a great quantity of simulation data. Such research is also significant for selecting the growth parameters relevant to production, providing a specific process growth window, narrowing the debugging scope, and providing a theoretical basis for the development of MOCVD equipment and process debugging.

Effect of the Preparation Method (Sol-Gel or Hydrothermal) and Conditions on the TiO₂ Properties and Activity for Propene Oxidation. MATERIALS 2018; 11:ma11112227. Abstract
Since the two most commonly used methods for TiO₂ preparation are sol-gel (SG) and hydrothermal (HT) synthesis, this study attempts to compare both methods in order to determine which one is the most suitable to prepare photocatalysts for propene oxidation. In addition, this work studies how the concentration of the HCl used for hydrolysis of the TiO₂ precursor affects the properties of the obtained materials. Also, the effect of avoiding the post-synthesis heat-treatment in a selection of samples is investigated. The photocatalysts are characterized by XRD, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms and UV-vis spectroscopy, and the study tries to correlate the properties with the photocatalytic performance of the prepared TiO₂ samples in propene oxidation. TiO₂ materials with high crystallinity, between 67% and 81%, and surface area (up to 134 m²/g) have been obtained both by SG and HT methods. In general, the surface area and pore volume of the TiO₂-HT samples are larger than those of TiO₂-SG ones. The TiO₂-HT catalysts are, in general, more active than TiO₂-SG materials or P25 in the photo-oxidation of propene. The effect of HCl presence during the TiO₂ synthesis and of the post synthesis heat treatment are much more marked in the case of the SG materials.
