Abstract
Disparities in socioeconomic status (SES) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Depression is a highly prevalent cardiovascular risk factor among individuals with low SES. The present study aimed to gain a better understanding of the association between SES and CVD by examining the mediating effects of depression. 30,127 participants, 50.77 % female, with a mean age of 47.37 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018, were included. Weighted multivariable logistic regression analyses estimated the association between SES and CVD. Mediation analyses tested the mediating effects of depression. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of high SES for CVD was 0.42 (95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.36, 0.50; P < 0.001). In parallel, depression was negatively associated with SES, in which the multivariable-adjusted β was -1.42 (95 % CI: -1.62, -1.22; P < 0.001) in high SES compared to low SES. For the association between depression and CVD, the multivariable-adjusted OR per 1-point increase of PHQ-9 score for CVD was 1.08 (95 % CI: 1.07, 1.09; P < 0.001). The mediation models indicated that depression mediated 10.92 % of the total association between SES and CVD when fully adjusted. Identifying individuals with depression for appropriate treatment is promising for reducing the CVD burden among populations with low SES.

Abstract
Background: Depression has been shown to have adverse effects on blood pressure (BP) and is associated with high blood pressure variability (BPV). In turn, high short-term BPV has been related to eventual cardiovascular risk. But it is not clear how early in adulthood the detrimental effects of depression on BPV may be discerned, if being at high risk for depression also compromises BPV, and whether the clinical features of depression moderate its adverse effects. We investigated these three issues among young adults using an office-like setting. Methods: In total, 218 subjects with a history of childhood-onset major depressive episodes (probands), 206 never-depressed full biological siblings of the probands (high-risk siblings), and 166 emotionally healthy unrelated controls received a psychiatric evaluation and three standardized-sitting BP measurements 5 min apart. Short-term BPV was defined as the maximum difference between measures (range) for each case. The statistical methods included analyses of variance/covariance, chi-square tests, and multiple regression. Results: Systolic and diastolic BP decreased over consecutive measurements (p < 0.001). After controlling for age, the probands, siblings, and controls did not differ significantly in terms of BPV. However, the number of lifetime depressive episodes did predict the diastolic BP range (p = 0.005): probands with the highest number of depressive episodes had the largest short-term diastolic BPV. Conclusions: On a group level, the adverse effects on BPV of having experienced or being at high risk for depression are not yet evident during young adulthood. However, the number of major depressive episodes, which is an index of lifetime depression burden, predicts higher BPV. Thus, BPV monitoring for young adults with clinical depression histories could be part of an early intervention program to reduce the risk of eventual cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
This study employs machine learning to detect the severity of major depressive disorder (MDD) through binary and multiclass classifications. We compared models that used only biomarkers of oxidative stress with those that incorporate sociodemographic and health-related factors. Data collected from 830 participants, based on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score, inform our analysis. In binary classification, the Random Forest (RF) classifier achieved the highest Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.84 when all features were included. In multiclass classification, the AUC improved from 0.84 with only oxidative stress biomarkers to 0.88 when all characteristics were included. To address data imbalance, weighted classifiers, and Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) approaches were applied. Weighted random forest (WRF) improved multiclass classification, achieving an AUC of 0.91. Statistical tests, including the Friedman test and the Conover post-hoc test, confirmed significant differences between model performances, with WRF using all features outperforming others. Feature importance analysis shows that oxidative stress biomarkers, particularly GSH, are top ranked among all features. Clinicians can leverage the results of this study to improve their decision-making processes by incorporating oxidative stress biomarkers in addition to the standard criteria for depression diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Systemic low-grade inflammation may be a pathophysiological mechanism in a subtype of depression. In this study we investigate a novel candidate mechanism of inflammatory depression - Selective Glomerular Hypofiltration Syndromes (SGHS) - which are characterized by a reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on cystatin C (cysC) relative to eGFR based on creatinine (crea). SGHS have been associated with increased blood levels of pro-inflammatory markers, but have never been investigated in a sample of depressed individuals. METHOD The prevalence of SGHS was compared between 313 patients with difficult-to-treat depression and 73 controls. Since there is no single established eGFRcysC/eGFRcrea-ratio cut-off to define SGHS, several cut-offs were investigated in relation to a depression diagnosis, inflammation, and symptom severity. Plasma inflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IL-10 were available from 276 depressed patients. We examined mediation effects of IL-6 on the relationship between SGHS and depression. RESULTS Depressed patients were more likely to have SGHS compared to controls defining SGHS as either eGFRcysC/eGFRcrea-ratio < 0.9 (33.2 % vs 20.5 %, p = 0.035) or < 0.8 (15.7 % vs 5.5 %, p = 0.023). Lower eGFRcysC/eGFRcrea-ratio was associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers in depressed patients. IL-6 partly mediated the relationship between SGHS and depression. CONCLUSION This is the first study to demonstrate a link between SGHS and inflammatory depression. If replicated in independent and longitudinal cohorts, this may prove to be a relevant pathophysiological mechanism in some cases of depression that could be targeted in future intervention and prevention studies.

Abstract
In this study, the 10-year cardiovascular risk associated with comorbid sleep disorders (insomnia disorder, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and COMISA [comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea]) was investigated for patients with major depression. To enable our analysis, 607 patients with major depression were selected from the data register of the Sleep Unit. High 10-year cardiovascular risk was considered present when the Framingham Risk Score was ≥10%. The 10-year cardiovascular risk associated with comorbid sleep disorders has been assessed using logistic regression analyzes. High 10-year cardiovascular risk is significant (40.4%) in patients with major depression. After successive introduction of the different confounders, multivariate logistic regressions showed that for patients with major depression high 10-year cardiovascular risk was significantly associated with COMISA but was not significantly associated with insomnia disorder or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome alone. Thus, these results highlight the existence of a negative synergistic action between insomnia disorder and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the 10-year cardiovascular risk in patients with major depression, which demonstrates the importance of researching and treating COMISA to improve the prognosis of this specific population subgroup characterized by higher cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although sleep duration and depression were correlated, their temporal sequence and how the sequence influence on future risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) remained undetermined. This study aimed to explore the temporal relationship between sleep duration and depression, and its association with future CVD risk. METHODS We included 10,629 middle-aged and elderly participants with repeated measurements of sleep duration and depressive symptoms (measured by Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale [CESD]) at the first two visits from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Cross-lagged analysis and mediation analysis were used to examine the temporal relationship between sleep duration and depression and its impact on future risk of CVD. RESULTS The adjusted cross-lagged path coefficient from baseline sleep duration to follow-up CES-D (β1 = -0.191; 95 % confidence interval [CI], -0.239 to -0.142) was significantly greatly than that from baseline CES-D to follow-up sleep duration (β2 = -0.031; 95 % CI, -0.031 to -0.024) (Pdifference < 0.0001). Similarly, the path coefficient from baseline sleep duration to annual changes in CES-D was significantly greater than that from baseline CES-D to annual changes in sleep duration (β1 = -0.093 versus β2 = -0.015, Pdifference < 0.0001). The path coefficient from baseline sleep duration to follow-up CES-D in CVD group was significantly greater than that in those without CVD (Pdifference of β1 = 0.0378). Furthermore, 27.93 % of the total association of sleep duration with CVD was mediated by depression symptoms. CONCLUSIONS The findings provide evidence that decrease in sleep duration probably precedes the increased in depressive symptoms, and depression partially mediated the pathway from sleep duration to incident CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The American Heart Association (AHA), in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, annually reports the most up-to-date statistics related to heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular risk factors, including core health behaviors (smoking, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and obesity) and health factors (cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose control, and metabolic syndrome) that contribute to cardiovascular health. The AHA Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update presents the latest data on a range of major clinical heart and circulatory disease conditions (including stroke, brain health, complications of pregnancy, kidney disease, congenital heart disease, rhythm disorders, sudden cardiac arrest, subclinical atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, valvular disease, venous thromboembolism, and peripheral artery disease) and the associated outcomes (including quality of care, procedures, and economic costs). METHODS The AHA, through its Epidemiology and Prevention Statistics Committee, continuously monitors and evaluates sources of data on heart disease and stroke in the United States and globally to provide the most current information available in the annual Statistical Update with review of published literature through the year before writing. The 2024 AHA Statistical Update is the product of a full year's worth of effort in 2023 by dedicated volunteer clinicians and scientists, committed government professionals, and AHA staff members. The AHA strives to further understand and help heal health problems inflicted by structural racism, a public health crisis that can significantly damage physical and mental health and perpetuate disparities in access to health care, education, income, housing, and several other factors vital to healthy lives. This year's edition includes additional global data, as well as data on the monitoring and benefits of cardiovascular health in the population, with an enhanced focus on health equity across several key domains. RESULTS Each of the chapters in the Statistical Update focuses on a different topic related to heart disease and stroke statistics. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the reciprocal relationship of depression and atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS A literature search was conducted in Pub Med, Scopus, and Google Scholar using relevant terms for depression and AF and respective therapies. RESULTS There is evidence that depression is involved in the aetiology and prognosis of AF. AF, independently of its type, incurs a risk of depression in 20-40% of patients. Also, depression significantly increases cumulative incidence of AF (from 1.92% to 4.44% at 10 years); 25% increased risk of new-onset AF is reported in patients with depression, reaching 32% in recurrent depression. Hence, emphasis is put on the importance of assessing depression in the evaluation of AF and vice versa. Persistent vs paroxysmal AF patients may suffer from more severe depression. Furthermore, depression can impact the effectiveness of AF treatments, including pharmacotherapy, anticoagulation, cardioversion and catheter ablation. CONCLUSIONS A reciprocal association of depression and AF, a neurocardiac link, has been suggested. Thus, strategies which can reduce depression may improve AF patients' course and treatment outcomes. Also, AF has a significant impact on risk of depression and quality of life. Hence, effective antiarrhythmic therapies may alleviate patients' depressive symptoms. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smoking is associated with many diseases and is a target for primary preventive efforts in numerous morbidities. Studies show that smoking and depression may be associated. Never-smokers are at significantly lower risk than current and former smokers. Despite this observation, the effect of smoking on depression risk reduction has not been adequately explored. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of smoking on depression risk reduction in adult patients seen in a primary care clinic at an academic medical center 6 months after they were identified as being at risk for depression. Findings may influence the direction and intensity of our smoking cessation endeavors in patients at risk of depression who smoke. METHODS We conducted an analytic cross-sectional study using electronic medical records of patients 18 years and older seen a primary care setting between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020. All participants included had an initial depression risk score (assessed by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)) of 5 or higher, information on smoking status and a PHQ-9 score at 6 months. We determined the percentage of patients with PHQ-9 score decrease of 5 or more at 6 months and used logistic regression to determine the association depression risk reduction (of 5 units or more) at 6 months and smoking, adjusting for demographic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics. RESULTS Number of patients included were 120, mean age was 55 (16), years, 88 (74%) were female, 68 (57%) were African American, and 31 (26%) were Caucasian. Fifty (44%) had a history of smoking and 31 (25.8%) had improvement (ie, a decrease of 5 units or more) in their PHQ-9 score at 6 months. Smoking was associated with decreased odds of improvement in depressive symptoms (Odds ratio = 0.32, 95% Confidence interval: 0.12-0.87). CONCLUSION Risk of depression was more likely to persist in smokers than non-smokers at 6 months. Addressing smoking behavior in those with risk of depression may be beneficial.
