Abstract
Background & aims Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a recurrent, inflammatory, autoimmune intestinal disease. The dietary calcium to phosphorus (Ca:P) ratio is suggested to affect the inividuals' normal metabolic and inflammatory pathways. The present study aimed to investigate the association between dietary Ca:P ratio and the odds of developing UC in a case-control format. Methods The study included sixty-two currently diagnosed UC patients and one hundred twenty-four matched controls, designed as a case-control study. The dietary intakes of the participants were assessed by a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and the dietary Ca:P ratio was calculated. The association between tertiles of Ca:P ratio and UC was examined using the logistic regression. P-values <0.05 were considered as significant. Results The study sample consisted of participants with an average age of 36.63 ± 12.42 years and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 25.39 ± 3.82 kg/m2. The overall energy-adjusted ratio of Ca:P was 0.74 ± 0.11. In the multivariate model, after adjustment for potential confounders, participants in the third tertile of dietary Ca:P ratio had a lower odds of developing UC compared to the lowest tertlie (OR: 0.34, 95% CI: 0.13-0.87; p = 0.026). Conclusion Our results indicate that a higher ratio of dietary Ca:P ratio might be protective against developing UC. However, further studies are warranted to examine this association in various populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary phosphorus intake may serve as a potential predictor for peripheral neuropathy (PN). While past research has predominantly focused on the relationship between dietary phosphorus and bone health, relatively little is known about its role in the nervous system, particularly its association with PN. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from NHANES 1999-2004. Participants were categorized into different dietary phosphorus intake groups, and the relationship between dietary phosphorus and PN was explored using multifactorial logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS) analysis, and threshold effect analysis based on dietary intake. RESULTS The final study included 7726 participants, with 1378 diagnosed with PN and 6348 without. The study revealed a U-shaped non-linear relationship between dietary calcium and magnesium intake levels and PN, indicating that both excessive and insufficient dietary phosphorus intake may increase the risk of PN. Specifically, the incidence rates in the first quintile (1.433, 95% CI: 1.080-1.901), the fourth quintile (1.284, 95% CI: 1.000-1.648), and the fifth quintile (1.533, 95% CI: 1.155-2.035) significantly higher than the second quintile, with an overall trend showing a decrease followed by an increase in incidence rates. The results of RCS and threshold effect analysis indicate that when dietary phosphorus intake is below 939.44mg, the risk of PN decreases with increasing dietary phosphorus intake. On the contrary, when dietary phosphorus intake exceeds 939.44mg, the risk of PN increases with increasing dietary phosphorus intake. CONCLUSION This study reveals a U-shaped correlation between dietary phosphorus intake and PN. Future research should further elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying this association, providing guidance for more scientifically informed dietary adjustments to prevent the occurrence of PN.

Abstract
Salivary biomarkers are increasingly being used as an alternative to diagnose and monitor the progression of various diseases due to their ease of use, on site application, non-invasiveness, and most likely improved patient compliance. Here, we highlight the role of salivary biosensors in the general population, followed by the application of saliva as a diagnostic tool in the pediatric population. We searched the literature for pediatric applications of salivary biomarkers, more specifically, in children from 0 to 18 years old. The use of those biomarkers spans autoimmune, developmental disorders, oncology, neuropsychiatry, respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal disorders, and oral diseases. Four major applications of salivary proteins as biomarkers are: (1) dental health (caries, stress from orthodontic appliances, and gingivitis); (2) gastrointestinal conditions (eosinophilic esophagitis, acid reflux, appendicitis); (3) metabolic conditions (obesity, diabetes); and (4) respiratory conditions (asthma, allergic rhinitis, small airway inflammation, pneumonia). Genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics, are various other classifications for biosensing based on the type of biomarkers used and reviewed here. Lastly, we describe the recent advances in pediatric biosensing applications using saliva. This work guides scientists in fabricating saliva-based biosensors by comprehensively overviewing the potential markers and techniques that can be employed.

Abstract
Phosphorus is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body. It is essential for almost all biochemical activities through ATP formation, intracellular signal transduction, cell membrane formation, bone mineralization, DNA and RNA synthesis, and inflammation modulation through various inflammatory cytokines. Phosphorus levels must be optimally regulated, as any deviations may lead to substantial derangements in glucose homeostasis. Clinical studies have reported that hyperphosphatemia can increase an individual's risk of developing metabolic syndrome. High phosphate burden has been shown to impair glucose metabolism by impairing pancreatic insulin secretion and increasing the risk of cardiometabolic disorders. Phosphate toxicity deserves more attention as metabolic syndrome is being seen more frequently worldwide and should be investigated further to determine the underlying mechanism of how phosphate burden may increase the cardiometabolic risk in the general population.

Abstract
Phosphate is a common ingredient of the daily consumed foods and is absorbed in the intestine and is excreted in the urine through the kidney to maintain the homeostatic balance. For adults, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for phosphorus is around 700 mg/day. The change in dietary habits resulted in far more phosphate consumption (almost double) than the RDA, contributing to increased cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases, and tumor formation. Due to a lack of clinical appreciation for the long-term consequences of chronic phosphate burden on non-communicable disorders, it is rapidly becoming a global health concern. The possible association between dysregulated phosphate metabolism and obesity is not studied in-depth, mainly because such an association is believed to be nonexistent. However, in the animal model of obesity, serum phosphate level was higher than their non-obese controls. In a similar observation line, significantly higher salivary phosphate levels were detected in obese children compared to normal-weight children. Of clinical importance, despite the significant increase of salivary phosphate levels in obese children, the plasma phosphate levels did not change in samples collected from the same group of children. Such disparity between plasma and saliva raised the possibility that human salivary phosphate levels may be an early biomarker of childhood obesity.

Abstract
Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is an essential nutrient for the human body which exerts adverse health effects in excess and deficit. High Pi-mediated cytotoxicity has been shown to induce systemic organ damage, though the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we employed proteomics and phosphoproteomics to analyze Pi-mediated changes in protein abundance and phosphorylation. Bioinformatic analyses and literature review revealed that the altered proteins and phosphorylation were enriched in signaling pathways and diverse biological processes. Western blot analysis confirms the extensive change in protein level and phosphorylation in key effectors that modulate pre-mRNA alternative splicing. Global proteome and phospho-profiling provide a bird-eye view of excessive Pi-rewired cell signaling networks, which deepens our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of phosphate toxicity.

Abstract
Phosphate, an essential nutrient, is available in organic and inorganic forms. The balance of phosphate is central for cellular homeostasis through the genomic roles of DNA and RNA synthesis and cell signaling processes. Therefore, an imbalance of this nutrient, manifested, either as a deficiency or excess in phosphate levels, can result in pathology, ranging from cytotoxicity to musculoskeletal defects. Inorganic phosphate (Pi) overdosing can result in a wide spectrum of cytotoxicity processes, as noted in both animal models and human studies. These include rewired cell signaling pathways, impaired bone mineralization, infertility, premature aging, vascular calcification, and renal dysfunction. This article briefly reviews the regulation of phosphate homeostasis and elaborates on cytotoxic effects of excessive Pi, as documented in cell-based models.

Evaluation of Vitamin D (25OHD), Bone Alkaline Phosphatase (BALP), Serum Calcium, Serum Phosphorus, Ionized Calcium in Patients with Mandibular Third Molar Impaction. An Observational Study. Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of vitamin D (25OHD) and other bone biomarkers in patients with third molar impaction (TMI). Thirty males and 30 females with unilateral or bilateral impacted mandibular third molar, and 15 males and 15 females as a control group (CG) were recruited. Rx-OPT was used to evaluate dental position and Pederson index to measure the difficulty of the intervention. Bone biomarkers were measured through blood venous sample in TMI group and CG. Mann-Whitney test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, linear regression model were used to compare the different parameters in the two groups. 25OHD showed lower values in TMI group than in CG (p < 0.05) with values significantly lower in bilateral impaction (p < 0.05). Pearson’s coefficient for 25OHD presented a negative correlation with the Pederson index (ρ = −0.75). Bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) showed significantly lower dosage in TMI group than CG (p = 0.02), Pearson’s coefficient for BALP presented a negative correlation with the Pederson index. Serum calcium, serum phosphorus, ionized calcium levels in TMI and CG groups were similar and Mann-Whitney test did not significantly differ between TMI and CG. TMI could be a sign of vitamin D deficiency and of low BALP levels that should be investigated.

Abstract
Depression and dementia are predicted to increase within aging global populations. Pathophysiological effects of phosphate toxicity, dysregulated amounts of accumulated phosphorus in body tissue, are under-investigated in association with stress, inflammation, depression, and dementia. A comparative analysis of concepts in cited sources from the research literature was used to synthesize novel themes exploring the disease-oriented neuroscience effects of phosphate toxicity. Phosphate toxicity is associated with activation of cellular stress response systems and inflammation. Cortisol released by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responds to stress and inflammation associated with phosphate toxicity and depression. In a reciprocal interaction, phosphate toxicity is capable of harming adrenal gland function, possibly leading to adrenal insufficiency and depression. Furthermore, Alzheimer's disease is associated with hyperphosphorylated tau which self-assembles into neurofibrillary tangles from excessive amounts of phosphate in the brain and central nervous system. Future research should investigate dietary phosphate modification to reduce potential pathophysiological effects of phosphate toxicity in stress, inflammation, depression, and cognitive decline which affects global populations.

Abstract
Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is an essential nutrient for human health. Due to the changes in our dietary pattern, dietary Pi overload engenders systemic phosphotoxicity, including excessive Pi-related vascular calcification and chronic tissue injury. The molecular mechanisms of the seemingly distinct phenotypes remain elusive. In this study, we investigated Pi-mediated cellular response in HEK293 and HeLa cells. We found that abnormally high Pi directly mediates diverse cellular toxicity in a dose-dependent manner. Up to 10 mM extracellular Pi promotes cell proliferation by activating AKT signaling cascades and augmenting cell cycle progression. By introducing additional Pi, higher than the concentration of 40 mM, we observed significant cell damage caused by the interwoven Pi-related biological processes. Elevated Pi activates mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling, encompassing extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), p38 and Jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK), which consequently potentiates Pi triggered lethal epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Synergistically, high Pi-caused endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress also contributes to apparent apoptosis. To counteract, Pi-activated AKT signaling promotes cell survival by activating the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and blocking ER stress. Pharmacologically or genetically abrogating Pi transport, the impact of high Pi-induced cytotoxicity could be reduced. Taken together, abnormally high extracellular Pi results in a broad spectrum of toxicity by rewiring complicated signaling networks that control cell growth, cell death, and homeostasis.

Abstract
The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is a known contributory factor of childhood obesity that is documented around the globe. More importantly, reducing the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages could reduce weight gain among overweight or obese children. Although sugar is present in many natural foods, artificial sugar is added into sugar-sweetened beverages, which has little or no nutritional value. However, the calories obtained from the sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to overweight and obesity, and an increase serving sizes of sugar-sweetened beverages over the years partly contributed to the alarming rise of childhood obesity around the globe. The sugar-sweetened beverages not only contain a high amount of sugar, but also contain a high amount of phosphate, and the possibility exists for an enhancing dual adverse health effects of sugar and phosphate. Increasing health awareness and limiting marketing approaches targeted towards the younger population are essential to reduce long-term health burdens that are linked to the overconsumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.

Abstract
Zinc, a metal found in the Earth's crust, is indispensable for human health. In the human body, around 60% of zinc is present in muscles, 30% in bones, and the remaining 10% in skin, hair, pancreas, kidneys and plasma. An adequate zinc balance is essential for the maintenance of skeletal growth, development and function. It is also necessary for basic cellular functions including enzyme activation, cell signaling and energy metabolism. Inadequate zinc status is associated with a wide variety of systemic disorders including cardiovascular impairment, musculoskeletal dysfunctions and oromaxillary diseases. In this article, we briefly discuss the role of zinc deficiency in the genesis of various oromaxillary diseases, and explain why adequate zinc homeostasis is vital for the maintenance of oral and general health.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to identify metabolite fingerprints in the serum related to amino acid (AA), carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism in transition dairy cows at -8 and -4 wks prior to parturition, at +2 wks postpartum during lameness diagnosis as well as at +4 and +8 wks after parturition. All cases of lameness occurred at around +2 wks after parturition. Out of 100 dairy cows included in this nested case-control study only 6 pregnant multiparous (parity: 3.0 ± 0.6, Mean ± SEM) Holstein dairy cows with lameness only and 20 healthy control cows (CON) were selected for serum GC-MS metabolomics analysis. All cows selected were not injured mechanically and had similar parity (3.3 ± 0.6) and body condition score (BCS). A total of 29 metabolites were identified and quantified in the serum. Results showed that 18 and 15 metabolites differentiated pre-lame cows from CON ones at -8 and -4 wks prior to parturition. Ten metabolites were found altered at the week of lameness diagnosis. Of note: pre-lame cows were characterized by greater concentrations of several amino acids including Gly, Leu, Phe, Ser, Val, D-mannose, Myo-inositol, and phosphoric acid (PA) at -8 and -4 wks prior to lameness and at the week of lameness diagnosis. At +4 wks after parturition 11 metabolites were altered in lameness cows, and at +8 wks there were 13 metabolites that differentiated the two groups. The high accuracy of the top 6 metabolites at -8 wks prior to parturition or approximately 9-11 wks before lameness diagnosis (Glu, Orn, Phe, Ser, Val, and PA) and another 5 metabolites at -4 wks before parturition, or approximately 5-7 wks before lameness diagnosis (Leu, Orn, Phe, Ser, and D-mannose) suggest that those metabolites may serve as potential monitoring biomarkers of lameness prior to lameness diagnosis. Data also showed multiple alterations during the week of lameness as well as at +4 and +8 wks postpartum suggesting lame cows are not metabolically healthy several weeks after the incidence of lameness. SIGNIFICANCE: Lameness is one of the top three health issues of dairy cows in Canada that influences early culling of dairy cows. Despite a few efforts, there is scarcity of data regarding metabolic alterations that precede, associate, and follow lameness. We investigated whether alterations in the metabolite signatures prior, during, and after development of lameness can be used to screen cows for susceptibility to lameness, characterize lameness from the metabolic prospective, and predict the outcome of this economically important health issue of dairy cows. The results demonstrate typical metabotypes as shown by increased serum concentrations of Val, Gly, Ser, Leu, Phe, D-mannose, myo-inositol, and phosphoric acid at -8 and -4 wks prior to parturition (or -6 to -10 wks prior to occurrence of lameness) and at the week of lameness diagnosis.

Abstract
The present article proposes that the association of inflammation with cancer is potentially mediated by the interaction of inflammatory hyperemia and hyperphosphatemia. Hyperemia increases blood flow rate and blood volume, and hyperphosphatemia is caused by elevated serum levels of dysregulated inorganic phosphate. It is hypothesized that the interaction of inflammatory hyperemia and hyperphosphatemia circulates increased amounts of inorganic phosphate to the tumor microenvironment, where increased uptake of inorganic phosphate through sodium-phosphate cotransporters is sequestered in cells. Elevated levels of intracellular phosphorus increase biosynthesis of ribosomal RNA, leading to increased protein synthesis that supports tumor growth. The present article also proposes that the interaction of inflammatory hyperemia and hyperphosphatemia may help explain a chemopreventive mechanism associated with NSAIDs.

Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of oral health care providers toward the use of online medical databases for clinical decision-making processes. Subjects and methods: The study population included all the licensed oral health care providers living in Rwanda, registered either with the Rwanda Allied Health Professional Council (RAHPC) or Rwanda Medical and Dental Council (RMDC). A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect demographic data as well as data regarding knowledge, attitude, and practice of oral health care providers regarding the use of online medical databases for making clinical decisions. A pilot study with 12 oral health care providers was done before the main study to pretest the questionnaire. Results: The study results show that among the 201 respondents, 80% (N=160) reported using internet-based resources to support their clinical decisions, while 20% (N=41) of oral health care providers do not use online resources when making their clinical decisions. In general, there was a positive attitude towards internet-based resources among the participants, as 92% (N=184) respondents believe that internet-based resources are helpful in clinical decision-making processes. Of clinical importance, 68% respondents (N=136) believe that by using current internet-based information, better clinical care can be offered to their patients. Conclusion: Educating oral health care providers on the useful and appropriate online resources available for supporting clinical decision-making processes might increase the efficiency of patient care.
