Controlling ZIF-67 crystals formation through various cobalt sources in aqueous solution

An ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 loading gold nanoparticles and horseradish peroxidase for detection of aflatoxin B1

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most toxic mycotoxins and poses a high risk to human health. Highly sensitive and rapid detection is one of the most effective preventive measures to avoid potential hazards. Herein, an electrochemical aptasensor based on DNA nanotetrahedron and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 loading gold nanoparticles, horseradish peroxidase, and aptamers was designed for the ultrasensitive detection of AFB1. The high specific surface area and large pore volume of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 can increase the loading capacity and further improve the detection sensitivity of electrochemical aptasensors. DNA nanotetrahedron can enhance the capture ability of AFB1 with steady immobilization. The developed aptasensor showed good analytical performance for AFB1 detection, with a detection limit of 3.9 pg mL-1 and a wide linear range of 0.01-100 ng mL-1. The aptasensor detected AFB1 in corn samples with recovery rates ranging from 94.19%-105.77% and has potential for use in food safety monitoring.

Study of mixed matrix membranes with in situ synthesized zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8, ZIF-67) in polyethersulfone polymer for CO2/CH4 separation

Biogas, produced from anaerobic digestion, is a sustainable and renewable energy source. To upgrade biogas to Bio-CNG, CO2 must be removed from the raw mixture. Membrane separation is an economical process for the removal of CO2, and mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are being explored for CO2/CH4 separation. MMMs are fabricated using techniques such as in situ techniques to overcome research gaps, such as in filler agglomeration and filler-polymer interfaces. In this work, MMMs were fabricated using the in situ growth of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 in polyethersulfone (PES) and compared with traditional filler dispersion of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. The fabricated MMMs were characterized and tested for gas permeation using a model biogas. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis were conducted to confirm in situ synthesis of ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. CO2 permeability of in situ ZIF-8 and ZIF-67-based MMMs have enhanced to 84.5 Barrer and 78.8 Barrer, respectively, compared to pure PES membrane, which is around 25 Barrer. Similarly, ZIF-8 and ZIF-67-based traditional MMMs have shown an increase in the CO2 permeability of 75.6 Barrer and 68 Barrer, respectively. Additionally, the selectivity for CO2/CH4 separation increased for some of the prepared MMMs, demonstrating the effectiveness of the in situ fabrication method.

A Co-MOF encapsulated microneedle patch activates hypoxia induction factor-1 to pre-protect transplanted flaps from distal ischemic necrosis

Avoiding ischemic necrosis after flap transplantation remains a significant clinical challenge. Developing an effective pretreatment method to promote flap survival postoperatively is crucial. Cobalt chloride (CoCl2) can increase cell tolerance to ischemia and hypoxia condition by stimulating hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) expression. However, the considerable toxic effects severely limit the clinical application of CoCl2. In this study, cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOF) encapsulated in a microneedle patch (Co-MOF@MN) was developed to facilitate the transdermal sustained release of Co2+ for rapid, minimally invasive rapid pretreatment of flap transplantation. The MN patch was composed of a fully methanol-based two-component cross-linked polymer formula, with a pyramid structure and high mechanical strength, which satisfied the purpose of penetrating the skin stratum corneum of rat back to achieve subcutaneous vascular area administration. Benefiting from the water-triggered disintegration of Co-MOF and the transdermal delivery via the MN patch, preoperative damage and side effects were effectively mitigated. Moreover, in both the oxygen-glucose deprivation/recovery (OGD/R) cell model and the rat dorsal perforator flap model, Co-MOF@MN activated the HIF-1α pathway and its associated downstream proteins, which reduced reperfusion oxidative damage, improved blood supply in choke areas, and increased flap survival rates post-transplantation. This preprotection strategy, combining MOF nanoparticles and the MN patch, meets the clinical demands for trauma minimization and uniform administration in flap transplantation. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Cobalt chloride (CoCl2) can stimulate the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1) and improve the tolerance of cells to ischemia and hypoxia conditions. However, the toxicity and narrow therapeutic window of CoCl2 severely limit its clinical application. Herein, we explored the role of Co-MOF as a biocompatible nanocage for sustained release of Co2+, showing the protective effect on vascular endothelial cells in the stress model of oxygen-glucose deprivation. To fit the clinical needs of minimal trauma in flap transplantation, a Co-MOF@MN system was developed to achieve local transdermal delivery at the choke area, significantly improving blood supply opening and flap survival rate. This strategy of two-step delivery of Co2+ realized the enhancement of biological functions while ensuring the biosafety.

Fabrication of Highly Efficient ZIF-8@PEI Monoliths for CO2 Capture Using Phosphorylated Cellulose Nanofiber as a Binder

This study involves the synthesis and comparison of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), specifically ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 pristine with a commercial zeolite, emphasizing their CO2 affinity and sorption capability. To overcome challenges persisting in the handling and integration of these materials into industrial adsorption processes, particularly when limited to microcrystalline fine powders, we present herein an innovative manufacturing method to produce standalone monolithic supports. This process involves pseudoplastic paste formulations utilizing polyethylenimine (PEI) as a coagulant and locally fabricated phosphorylated cellulose nanofiber (PCNF) as a binding agent. Rheological investigation was conducted to anticipate the required shaping and design by means of paste flowability, consistency, and stiffness. XRD and FTIR results confirm the preservation of crystalline structure and the occurrence of amine functionalization associated with the presence of PEI, respectively. The proposed method significantly enhances the CO2 adsorption performance of the produced ZIF-8 monolith in comparison with that reached when using the pristine material, achieving a capacity of 1.25-2 mmol·g-1 at 30 °C under dry conditions in a pressure range of 1-13 bar, respectively. In other words, this work clearly highlights an effective applicability of the ZIF-8 monolith as an innovative sorbent for further designing CO2 capture industrial setups.

The effect of carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) support on the reactivity and selectivity of bimetal-catalytic aqueous NO3- reduction

A metallic catalyst, Cobalt N-doped Carbon (Co@NC), was obtained from Zeolitic-Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) for efficient aqueous nitrate (NO3-) removal. This advanced catalyst indicated remarkable efficiency by generating valuable ammonium (NH3/NH4+) via an environmentally friendly production technique during the nitrate treatment. Among various metals (Cu, Pt, Pd, Sn, Ru, and Ni), 3.6%Pt-Co@NC exhibited an exceptional nitrate removal, demonstrating a complete removal of 60 mg/L NO3--N (265 mg/L NO3-) in 30 min with the fastest removal kinetics (11.4 × 10-2 min-1) and 99.5% NH4+ selectivity. The synergistic effect of bimetallic Pt-Co@NC led to 100% aqueous NO3- removal, outperforming the reactivity by bare ZIF-67 (3.67%). The XPS analysis illustrated Co's promotor role for NO3- reduction to less oxidized nitrogen species and Pt's hydrogenation role for further reduction to NH4+. The durability test revealed a slight decrease in NO3- removal, which started from the third cycle (95%) and slowly proceeded to the sixth cycle (80.2%), while NH4+ selectivity exceeded 82% with no notable Co or Pt leaching throughout seven consecutive cycles. This research shed light on the significance of the impregnated Pt metal and Co exposed on the Co@NC surface for the catalytic nitrate treatment, leading to a sustainable approach for the effective removal of nitrate and economical NH4+ production.

Co3O4/activated carbon nanocomposites as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

The Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) is crucial in various processes such as hydrogen production via water splitting. Several electrocatalysts, including metal oxides, have been evaluated to enhance the reaction efficiency. Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) has been employed as a precursor to produce Co3O4, showing high OER activity. Additionally, the formation of composites with carbon-based materials improves the activity of these materials. Thus, this work focuses on synthesizing ZIF-67 and commercial activated carbon (AC) composites, which were used as precursors to obtain Co3O4/C electrocatalysts by calculating ZIF-67/CX (X = 10, 30, and 50, the mass percentage of AC). The obtained materials were thoroughly characterized by employing X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), confirming the cobalt oxide structure with a sphere-like morphology as observed in the TEM images. The presence of oxygen vacancies was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and EPR measurements. The electrocatalytic performance in the OER was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), which revealed an overpotential of 325 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope value of 65.32 mV dec-1 for Co3O4/C10, superior in activity to several previously reported studies in the literature and electrochemical stability of up to 8 hours. The reduced value of charge transfer resistance, high double-layer capacitance, and the presence of Co3+ ions justify the superior performance of the Co3O4/C10 electrocatalyst.

Synergistic cobalt‑copper metal-organic framework anchored amino-functionalized cellulose for antibiotic degradation: Interfacial engineering and mechanism insight

Improving electron transfer rate of Co species and inhibiting aggregation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) particles are essential prerequisites for activating advanced oxidation process in wastewater treatment field. Here, we exploit Cu species with variable valence states to accelerate electron transfer of Co species and then to boost the unsatisfactory degradation efficiency for refractory pharmaceuticals via in-situ growth of copper and cobalt species on l-lysine functionalized carboxylated cellulose nanofibers. Utilizing the synergistic interplay of Co sites and deliberately exposed Cu0/Cu1+ atoms, the subtly designed catalyst exhibited a surprising degradation efficiency (~100 %) toward tetracycline hydrochloride within 10 min (corresponding to a catalytic capacity of 267.71 mg/g) without adjusting temperature and pH. Meanwhile, the catalyst displays good recyclability, well tolerance for coexisting ions and excellent antibacterial performance derived from the intrinsic antibacterial property of Cu-MOF. This research provided a novel strategy to construct MOFs-cellulose materials toward degrading various stubborn antibiotic pollutants.

Tailoring the topology of ZIF-67 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) adsorbents to capture humic acids

Chlorination is a versatile technique to combat water-borne pathogens. Over the last years, there has been continued research interest to abate the formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs). To prevent hazardous DBPs in drinking water, it is decided to diminish organic precursors, among which humic acids (HA) resulting from the decomposition and transformation of biomass. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have recently received tremendous attention in water purification. Herein, customized ZIF-67 MOFs possessing various physicochemical properties were prepared by changing the cobalt source. The HA removal by ZIF-67-Cl, ZIF-67-OAc, ZIF-67-NO3, and ZIF-67-SO4 were 85.6%, 68.9%, 86.1%, and 87.4%, respectively, evidently affected by the specific surface area. HA uptake by ZIF-67-SO4 indicated a removal efficiency beyond 90% in 4  90% after 60 min mixing the solution with 0.3 g L-1 ZIF-67-SO4. Notably, an acceptable removal performance (∼72.3%) was obtained even at HA concentrations up to 100 mg L-1. The equilibrium data fitted well with the isotherm models in the order of Langmuir> Hill > BET> Khan > Redlich-Peterson> Jovanovic> Freundlich > and Temkin. The maximum adsorption capacity qm for HA uptake by ZIF-67-SO4 was 175.89 mg g-1, well above the majority of adsorbents. The pseudo-first-order model described the rate of HA adsorption by time. In conclusion, ZIF-67-SO4 presented promising adsorptive properties against HA. Further studies would be needed to minimize cobalt leaching from the ZIF-67-SO4 structure and improve its reusability safely, to ensure its effectiveness and the economy of adsorption system.

In situ Growth of Zeolite Imidazole Frameworks (ZIF-67) on Carbon Cloth for the Application of Oxygen Reduction Reactions and Microbial Fuel Cells

Developing high surface area catalysts is an effective strategy to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). This can be achieved by developing a catalyst based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) because they offer a porous active site for ORR. In this work, a novel in situ growth of 2D shell nanowires of ZIF-67 as a template for N-doped carbon (Co/NC) via a carbonization route was developed to enhance the ORR performance. The effects of different reaction times and different annealing temperatures were studied for a better ORR activity. The growth of the MOF template on the carbon cloth was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared. The Co/NC-800 exhibited an enhancement in the ORR activity as evidenced by an onset potential and half-wave potential of 0.0 vs V Ag/AgCl and -0.1 vs V Ag/AgCl, respectively, with a limited current density exceeding the commercial Pt/C. Operating Co/NC-800 on MFC revealed a maximum power density of 30 ± 2.5 mW/m2, a maximum current density of 180 ± 2.5 mA/m2.

Parametric study and process modeling for metronidazole removal by rhombic dodecahedron ZIF-67 crystals

Metronidazole (MNZ) is an extensively used antibiotic against bacterial infections for humans and farm animals. Prevention of antibiotics discharge is essential to prevent adverse environmental and health impacts. A member of metal-organic frameworks, zeolite imidazole framework-67 with cobalt sulfate precursor (ZIF-67-SO4) and exceptional physio-chemical properties was prepared via room temperature precipitation to adsorb MNZ. The study framework was designed by Box-Behnken Design to evaluate the effect of pH, ZIF-67-SO4 dose, and contact time on adsorption efficiency. The polynomial model fitted the adsorption system indicated the optimal condition for 97% MNZ removal occurs at pH = 7, adsorbent dosage = 1 g/L, and mixing time = 60 min. The model also revealed that the removal increased with contact time and decreased at strong pH. Equilibrium and kinetic study also indicated the adsorption of MNZ followed the intra-particle diffusion model and the Langmuir isotherm model with a qmax = 63.03 mg/g. The insignificant loss in removal efficacy in use-reuse adsorption cycles reflected the practical viability of ZIF-67-SO4.

Efficient removal of veterinary drugs from aqueous solutions using magnetically separable carbonaceous materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks

Rapid synthesis of carbon-based magnetic materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), ZIF-67, and MIL-100(Fe), by microwave-assisted method, followed by carbonization under a N₂ atmosphere is described in this study. The carbon-derived MOFs (CDMs) were evaluated for the removal of the emerging pollutants sulfadiazine (SDZ) and flumequine (FLU) used as veterinary drugs. The study aimed to link the adsorption behavior with their surface properties and elemental composition. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100(Fe) showed hierarchical porous structures with specific surface areas of 295.6 and 163.4 m² g^-1, respectively. The Raman spectra of the CDMs show the characteristic D and G bands associated with defect-rich carbon and sp² graphitic carbon, respectively. The CDMs exhibit cobalt species (Co₃O₄, CoO, and Co) in C-ZIF-67 and iron species (Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, and Fe) in C-MIL-100 (Fe) which are related to the magnetic behavior of CDMs. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) had saturation magnetization values of 22.9 and 53.7 emu g^-1, respectively, allowing easy solid-liquid separation using a magnet. SDZ and FLU removal rates on CDMs follow pseudo-second-order kinetics, and adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model based on regression coefficient values. Adsorption thermodynamics calculations showed that the adsorption of SDZ and FLU by CDMs was a thermodynamically favorable process. Therefore, these properties of C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) and their regeneration ability facilitate their use as adsorbents for emerging pollutants.

Metal organic framework-derived recyclable magnetic coral Co@Co3O4/C for adsorptive removal of antibiotics from wastewater

The menace posed by antibiotic contamination to humanity has increased due to the absence of efficient antibiotic removal processes in the conventional waste water treatment methods from the hospitals, households, animal husbandry, and pharma industry. Importantly, only a few commercially available adsorbents are magnetic, porous, and have the ability to selectively bind and separate various classes of antibiotics from the slurries. Herein, we report the synthesis of a coral-like Co@Co3O4/C nanohybrid for the remediation of three different classes of antibiotics - quinolone, tetracycline, and sulphonamide. The coral like Co@Co3O4/C materials are synthesized via a facile room temperature wet chemical method followed by annealing in a controlled atmosphere. The materials demonstrate an attractive porous structure with an excellent surface-to-mass ratio of 554.8 m2 g-1 alongside superior magnetic responses. A time-varying adsorption study of aqueous nalidixic acid solution on Co@Co3O4/C nanohybrids indicates that these coral-like Co@Co3O4/C nanohybrids could achieve a high removal efficiency of 99.98% at pH 6 in 120 min. The adsorption kinetics data of Co@Co3O4/C nanohybrids follow a pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics suggesting a chemisorption effect. The adsorbent has also shown its merit in reusability for four adsorption-desorption cycles without showing significant change in the removal efficiency. More in-depth studies validate that the excellent adsorption capability of Co@Co3O4/C adsorbent attributing to the electrostatic and π-π interaction between adsorbent and various antibiotics. Concisely, the adsorbent manifests the potential for the removal of a wide range of antibiotics from the water alongside showing their utility in the hassle-free magnetic separation.

ZIF-67 blended PVDF membrane for improved Congo red removal and antifouling properties: A correlation establishment between morphological features and ultra-filtration parameters

Dye effluents from various sectors have constantly imperilled the environment and ecosystem. Nano-composite membrane technology incorporating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has shown tremendous potential for toxic pollutant remediation. This study details the impact of ZIF-67 MOF nanoparticles on the structural properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane during the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. In order to outline the properties that determine the performance parameters in a MOF-modified mixed matrix membrane, the corresponding changes in mean pore size (MPS), surface porosity, solvent viscosity, and hydrophilicity have been discussed with appropriate surface characterization analysis. The suitability of ZIF-67 as filler nanoparticles were established based on polymer compatibility, dispersibility, and water stability studies. The ZIF-67 incorporated PVDF mixed matrix membranes (MMM) showed 99.5% CR dye removal with 2.6 times DI water permeability than the neat. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) improved by 1.9 times and the membranes were found suitable for up to 5 filtration cycles. Based on the overall results, a correlation analysis between the MMM surface properties and membrane performance parameters were established to determine the key performance parameters. It was observed that in comparison to MPS, surface porosity was more correlated to J_d/J_w (r = 0.96) and FRR (r = 0.95).

Interrogating Encapsulated Protein Structure within Metal-Organic Frameworks at Elevated Temperature

Encapsulating biomacromolecules within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can confer thermostability to entrapped guests. It has been hypothesized that the confinement of guest molecules within a rigid MOF scaffold results in heightened stability of the guests, but no direct evidence of this mechanism has been shown. Here, we present a novel analytical method using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to solve the structure of bovine serum albumin (BSA) while encapsulated within two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67 and ZIF-8). Our approach comprises subtracting the scaled SAXS spectrum of the ZIF from that of the biocomposite BSA@ZIF to determine the radius of gyration of encapsulated BSA through Guinier, Kratky, and pair distance distribution function analyses. While native BSA exposed to 70 °C became denatured, in situ SAXS analysis showed that encapsulated BSA retained its size and folded state at 70 °C when encapsulated within a ZIF scaffold, suggesting that entrapment within MOF cavities inhibited protein unfolding and thus denaturation. This method of SAXS analysis not only provides insight into biomolecular stabilization in MOFs but may also offer a new approach to study the structure of other conformationally labile molecules in rigid matrices.

Atomic layer encapsulation of ferrocene into zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 for efficient arsenic removal from aqueous solutions

Arsenic (As(V))-contaminated water is a major global threat to human health and the ecosystem because of its enormous toxicity, carcinogenicity, and high distribution in water streams. Thus, As(V) removal in the environmental samples has received considerable attention. Till now, numerous metal-organic framework materials have been used for the As(V) removal from the aqueous medium, but low As(V) removal and instability of the adsorbents have severely cut off their practical applications. In this study, a ferrocene-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (Fc-ZIF-67) material was synthesized for As(V) removal from an aqueous solution at neutral pH using a simple solution mixing process. The ferrocene encapsulation provides water-stable and structural defects to ZIF-67. Furthermore, the ferrocene molecule and imidazole linker can enhance As(V) adsorption via both chemisorption and physisorption. The novel Fc-ZIF-67 adsorbent exhibited superior As(V) adsorption performance with an adsorption capacity of 63.29 mg/g at neutral pH. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were also used to analyze adsorption behavior.

Fabrication of porous ZnO/Co3O4 nanohybrids for the application of surface enhanced Raman scattering

With the growing use of various pesticides, it is important to develop facile and sensitive method to detect pesticides residues in food. Here, a semiconductor/magnetic hybrid material was used as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to detect simulated residues. The representative sample of porous ZnO/Co₃O₄ nano-cube was fabricated by pyrolysis and calcination of Zn-Co ZIF, successively. The obtained hybrid of ZnO/Co₃O₄ was employed as substrate to detect of crystal violet (CV) and Rhodamine B (Rh B), and showed remarkable SERS performance. The detection limit of Rh B was 1 × 10^-10 M as well as CV of 1 × 10^-9 M. The results indicated that it was an ideal choice to improve the SERS property of transition metal oxide substrates by doping semiconductor. The semiconductor/magnetic hybrid material highlighted the obvious characteristics of low cost, facile preparation and ultra-low detection limit in the SERS measurements. The hybrids with the combination of semiconductor/magnetic properties showed a further widely application and development in SERS detection of pesticides residues.

Synthesis and Characterization of ZIF-67 Mixed Matrix Nanobiocatalysis for CO2 Adsorption Performance

In this study, ZIF-67-based mixed matrix membrane was synthesized with a solution casting method using tetrahydrofuran as the solvent. The as-synthesized ZIF-67 was characterized using PXRD, TGA, ATR-FTIR, and BET analysis for the surface area measurements. The minimum 3 wt% loading of ZIF-67 was incorporated within a hydrophobic polymer to evaluate the CO2 adsorption performance of ZIF-67. The stability of ZIF-67 in pure water and inorganic solvents was investigated. The maximum CO2 adsorption of the ZIF-67 mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) was 0.5 mmol/g at 273 K, which is higher than that of the pure polymer. The fabricated ZIF-67-based mixed-matrix membrane showed higher CO2 capture even at lower MOF loading using THF. The current study highly recommends the combination of hydrophobic polysulfone and a water-stable ZIF-67 for CO2 capture from wet flue gases.

Solid-state electrochemiluminescence sensor based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 electrospinning nanofibers for chlorpyrifos detection

A novel solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for chlorpyrifos (CPF) detection was constructed based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 electrospinning nanofibers (ZIF-67 NFs). Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), ZIF-67 NFs, tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)₃²⁺], and Nafion were successively deposited on the surface of the electrode. Ag NPs played a role in promoting electron transfer, and ZIF-67 NFs played a role in fixing Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ and promoting electron transfer due to its large specific surface area and porosity. Nafion formed a film on the outermost layer of the electrode to further improve the stability of the system. Therefore, the modified electrode showed stable and obvious ECL signal in PBS solution containing 10 μL 0.01 M TprA (pH 8.0). CPF quenched the ECL signal of the system, and the quenching value was linear with the logarithm of CPF concentration in the range 1.0 × 10^-13 to 1.0 × 10^-6 M. The detection limit was 3.3 × 10^-14 M (S/N = 3). In this study, ZIF-67 NFs were used as an ECL promoter for the first time, broadening the application range of ZIF-67 NFs.

Pt/Pd Decorate MOFs Derived Co-N-C Materials as High-Performance Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

We report here, a strategy to prepare Pt/Pd nanoparticles decorated with Co-N-C materials, where Co-N-C was obtained via pyrolysis of ZIF-67 directly. As-prepared Pt/Pd/Co-N-C catalysts showed excellent ORR performance, offered with a higher limit current density (6.6 mA cm−2) and similar half-wave potential positive (E1/2 = 0.84 V) compared with commercial Pt/C. In addition to an ORR activity, it also exhibits robust durability. The current density of Pt/Pd/Co-N-C decreased by only 9% after adding methanol, and a 10% current density loss was obtained after continuous testing at 36,000 s.

Characterization of D-Allulose-3-Epimerase From Ruminiclostridium papyrosolvens and Immobilization Within Metal-Organic Frameworks

D-allulose is one sort of C-3 epimer of D-fructose with the low calorie (0.4 kcal/g) and high sweetness (70% of the relative sweetness of sucrose), which can be biosynthesized by D-allulose-3-epimerase (DAE). In this work, we report the characterization of a novel DAE from Ruminiclostridium papyrosolvens (RpDAE) by genome mining approach. The activity of RpDAE reached maximum at pH 7.5 and 60°C, supplemented with 1 mM Co²⁺. Using D-fructose (500 g/L) as the substrate for epimerization reaction, RpDAE produced D-allulose (149.5 g/L). In addition, RpDAE was immobilized within the microporous zeolite imidazolate framework, ZIF67, by in situ encapsulation at room temperature. The synthesized bio-composites were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. RpDAE-ZIF67 maintained 56% of residual activity after five reaction cycles. This study provides helpful guidance for further engineering applications and industrial production of D-allulose.

Modulating the electrocatalytic activity of N-doped carbon frameworks via coupling with dual metals for Zn-air batteries

N-Doped carbon electrocatalysts are a promising alternative to precious metal catalysts to promote oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it remains a challenge to design the desired active sites on carbon skeletons in a controllable manner for ORR. Herein, we developed a facile approach based on oxygen-mediated solvothermal radical reaction (OSRR) for preparation of N-doped carbon electrocatalysts with a pre-designed active site and modulated catalytic activity for ORR. In the OSRR, 2-methylimidazole reacted with Co and Mn salts to form an active site precursor (MnCo-MIm) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) at room temperature. Then, the reaction temperature increased to 140 °C under an oxygen atmosphere to generate NMP radicals, followed by their polymerization with the pre-formed MnCo-MIm to produce Mn-coupled Co nanoparticle-embedded N-doped carbon framework (MnCo-NCF). The MnCo-NCF showed uniform dispersion of nitrogen atoms and Mn-doped Co nanoparticles on the carbon skeleton with micropores and mesopores. The MnCo-NCF exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity for ORR than did a Co nanoparticle only-incorporated carbon framework due to the improved charge transfer from the Mn-doped Co nanoparticles to the carbon skeleton. In addition, the Zn-air battery assembled with MnCo-NCF had superior performance and durability to the battery using commercial Pt/C. This facile approach can be extended for designing carbon electrocatalysts with desired active sites to promote specific reactions.

Integrating Multi-Heterointerfaces in a 1D@2D@1D Hierarchical Structure via Autocatalytic Pyrolysis for Ultra-Efficient Microwave Absorption Performance

Developing microwave absorption (MA) materials with ultrahigh efficiency and facile preparation method remains a challenge. Herein, a superior 1D@2D@1D hierarchical structure integrated with multi-heterointerfaces via self-assembly and an autocatalytic pyrolysis is designed to fully unlock the microwave attenuation potential of materials, realizing ultra-efficient MA performance. By precisely regulating the morphology of the metal organic framework precursor toward improved impedance matching and intelligently integrating multi-heterointerfaces to boosted dielectric polarization, the specific return loss value of composites can be effectively tuned and optimized to -1002 dB at a very thin thickness of 1.8 mm. These encouraging achievements shed fresh insights into the precise design of ultra-efficient MA materials.

Critical Review, Recent Updates on Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) and Its Derivatives for Electrochemical Water Splitting

Design and construction of low-cost electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term stability is a challenging task in the field of catalysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are promising candidates as precursor materials in the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage applications. This review starts with a summary of basic concepts and key evaluation parameters involved in the electrochemical water-splitting reaction. Then, different synthesis approaches reported for the cobalt-based Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and its derivatives are critically reviewed. Additionally, several strategies employed to enhance the electrocatalytic activity and stability of ZIF-67-based electrocatalysts are discussed in detail. The present review provides a succinct insight into the ZIF-67 and its derivatives (oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, selenides, phosphide, nitrides, telluride, heteroatom/metal-doped carbon, noble metal-supported ZIF-67 derivatives) reported for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and overall water splitting applications. Finally, this review concludes with the associated challenges and the perspectives on developing the best economic, durable electrocatalytic materials.

Novel direct growth of ZIF-67 derived Co3O4 and N-doped carbon composites on carbon cloth as supercapacitor electrodes

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF67) derivatives are considered as promising active materials for energy storage owing to the possible formation of cobalt oxide and N-doped graphite. Cobalt oxide has multiple redox states for generating redox reactions for charge storage, while N-doped graphite can provide high electrical conductivity for charge transfer. In this study, it is the first time to synthesize binder-free electrodes composed of cobalt oxide and N-doped graphite derived from ZIF67 on carbon cloth (CC) for supercapacitor (SC). Successive oxidation and carbonization along with additional coverage of ZIF67 derivatives are applied to synthesize ZIF67 derivatives composed of cobalt oxide, N-doped graphite and cobalt oxide/N-doped graphite composites with different layer compositions. The highest specific capacitance (C_F) of 90.0F/g at 20 mV/s is obtained for the oxidized ZIF67/carbonized ZIF67/carbon cloth (O67/C67/CC) electrode, due to the large surface area and high electrical conductivity benefitted from preferable morphology and growing sequence of Co₃O₄ and N-doped graphite. The symmetric SC composed of O67/C67/CC electrodes shows the maximum energy density of 2.53 Wh/kg at the power density of 50 W/kg. Cycling stability with C_F retention of 70% and Coulombic efficiency of 65% after 6000 times repeatedly charge/discharge process is also obtained for this symmetric SC.

Metal-organic frameworks-derived hierarchical Co3O4/CoNi-layered double oxides nanocages with the enhanced catalytic activity for toluene oxidation

The development of active transition-metal oxide (TMO) catalysts for the abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) remains a great challenge. Controllable synthesis of TMOs with specific morphology and suitable composition is a promising way for acquiring efficient oxidation catalysts. Herein, a series of hierarchical Co₃O₄/CoNi-layered double oxides (CoNi-LDO) nanocages covered by interlaced nanosheets were synthesized using a cobalt metal-organic framework (Co-MOF)-based strategy. The textural properties, morphology, surface chemical state, and reducibility of the CoNi-LDO catalysts were systematically characterized by various techniques. The catalytic activity toward toluene oxidation and the stability performance was investigated. Results demonstrated that the morphology, composition, and textual properties can be controlled by tuning the post-synthetic etching reaction conditions. Benefiting from the structural and compositional merits, as well as the superior low-temperature reducibility, the CoNi-LDO-1 catalyst (Ni/Co molar ratio was 0.39) with core-shell structure exhibited excellent activity toward toluene oxidation. Our work offers a new strategy for the design of high-performance oxidation catalysts for the abatement of VOCs.

Cubic-like Co/NC composites derived from ZIF-67 with a dual control strategy of size and graphitization degree for microwave absorption

MOFs with high tunability are considered ideal candidates as microwave-absorbing materials. Strict experimental conditions can ensure the repeatability and maximize the potential of such materials. In this study, cubic ZIF-67 carbides synthesized at different solution temperatures showed an adjustable average size, and then by adjusting the calcination temperature we could control the degree of graphitization, so as to explore the synergistic effect of these two aspects to achieve an in-depth understanding of the electromagnetic properties and microwave absorption properties. The results showed that sample 30-600 (with the former number referring to the synthesis temperature and the latter to the calcination temperature) showed the widest effective absorption bandwidth (5.75 GHz, 1.8 mm) and the optimal reflection loss (-56.92 dB, 2.1 mm). The best matching electromagnetic parameters were obtained under the synergistic action of a smaller particle size and appropriate degree of graphitization, so as to achieve strong attenuation characteristics under low electromagnetic wave reflection. The microwave loss mechanism of the sample mainly involved dielectric losses, such as from conductance loss, dipole polarization, and interface polarization. Starting from the experimental details, this work proposes a dual control strategy for developing microwave-absorbing materials with both simplicity and practicability, which provides a useful reference for other microwave absorbents synthesized at room temperature.

Synthesis and characterization of a new ZIF-67@MgAl2O4 nanocomposite and its adsorption behaviour

Fabricating suitable adsorbents with low-cost and high efficiency extraction for measurement of very small amounts of agricultural pesticides in food and water is playing a vital key role in personal and environmental health. Here, a new composite of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67@magnesium aluminate spinel (ZIF-67@MgAl2O4) has been fabricated by a simple method at room temperature with different weight ratios. Several techniques such as FE-SEM, BET, XRD, and TGA have been used to confirm the structural characterization of the obtained materials. The obtained ZIF-67@MgAl2O4 was utilized as an adsorbent in the solid phase microextraction technique to extract and preconcentrate the herbicide molinate (as an analyte) in aqueous solution. Corona discharge ionization-ion mobility spectrometry (CD-IMS) was applied for quantification of the analyte molecules. Extraction temperature, extraction time, stirring rate, and sample pH as the main parameters that affected the extraction proficiency were chosen and considered. Under optimal conditions, the linear dynamic range (LDR) of the various concentrations of the molinate and correlation coefficient were 10.0-100.0 μg L-1 and 0.9961, respectively. The limit of quantification (LOQ) and method detection limit (MDL) were 10.0 μg L-1 and 3.0 μg L-1, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the ZIF-67@MgAl2O4 for extracting the molinate molecules (molinate concentration; 50 μg L-1) was calculated to be 4% and the enrichment factor (EF) was ∼5.

Cobalt metal-organic framework-based ZIF-67 for the trace determination of herbicide molinate by ion mobility spectrometry: investigation of different morphologies

Co-MOF-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67) with various morphologies were prepared via an innovative way under distinct reaction conditions. By changing the reaction conditions, including the cobalt source, solvent, time, temperature, and linking agent to the cobalt ions, the morphological evolution of Co-MOF-based ZIF-67 was investigated. The Co-MOF-based ZIF-67 was applied as an adsorbent fiber in the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technique for extracting a herbicide, namely molinate (as a test compound), in aqueous samples. For recognizing the molinate molecules, drift tube ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) was employed as a sensitive, rapid, and simple detection technique. Two essential parameters, namely extraction temperature and extraction time, influenced the extraction efficiency, and these parameters were also analyzed and optimized. The linear dynamic range (LDR) and the determination coefficient were found to be 0.5-20.0 μg L-1 and 0.9990, respectively. In this regard, the limit of quantification (LOQ) and the detection limit (LOD) were calculated and found to be 0.5 μg L-1 and 0.15 μg L-1, respectively. Finally, the effect of the adsorbent with different morphologies on the extraction efficiency was compared.

Preparation and characterization of nanofibrous metal-organic frameworks as efficient catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates in solvent-free conditions

Environmental concerns, particularly global warming, represent serious threats to public health globally. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are innovative materials with prominent features such as ultrahigh surface area, high porosity and tunable cavities, which make them unique materials both in adsorption of carbon dioxide and catalysis. The design of new nanocomposites by using metal-organic frameworks as building materials has received broad attention recently. Here, nanocrystals of two unique MOF structures (UiO-66 and ZIF-67) were incorporated into electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polystyrene (PS) fibers (noted as MOFibers) by an ex situ method, to transform non-toxic, abundant, economical and renewable CO2 gas to cyclic carbonates in a solvent-free medium. In order to improve the composites' performance, different electrospinning parameters, including applied voltage, flow rate, collection distance, PVA and PS weight fraction in solution, and MOF weight fraction relative to the polymer, were intensively investigated. The synthesized samples were characterized by multiple techniques, such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, UV-vis and TGA, as well as N2 and CO2 adsorption measurement. It was found that all of the composites show properties combining the advantages of MOFs and polymers, such as thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability, structural flexibility, lightweight, adsorption performance and catalytic properties. Additionally, all systems were environment-friendly and the PVA/MOF fibers were easily separated and recycled for consecutive cycles.

Assembly of ZIF-67 nanoparticles and in situ grown Cu(OH)2 nanowires serves as an effective electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution

Due to the slow kinetics of oxygen evolution at the anode, the efficiency of electrocatalytic water decomposition is critically reduced, and its large-scale application is severely restricted. Therefore, it is urgent to develop electrocatalysts with excellent performance and stability to accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) reaction kinetics. Herein, a self-supporting binder-free electrocatalyst was successfully prepared using in situ grown Cu(OH)2 nanowires on CF as the carrier to grow ZIF-67 via a room temperature immersion method. The combination of Cu(OH)2 nanowires and the unique structure of ZIF-67 forms a three-dimensional nanostructured catalyst, in which the unique structure and the existence of synergy may contribute to a larger electrochemical active surface area, expose more electrochemically active sites, adjust the electronic structure, and accelerate the rate of electron transfer, thus greatly improving the electrocatalytic activity and durability for OER. The as-prepared Cu(OH)2@ZIF-67/CF exhibited excellent OER performance under alkaline conditions and required overpotentials of 205 mV and 276 mV to drive current densities of 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, with a small Tafel slope of 70.5 mV dec-1 for OER. The stability test of Cu(OH)2@ZIF-67/CF at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 displayed excellent stability for 22 h. This study provides a feasible strategy for the rapid preparation of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts in alkaline media.

Study on improving the stability of adsorption-encapsulation immobilized Laccase@ZIF-67

Laccase (Trametes versicolor) was immobilized onto/into zeolite imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) for the first time, materials were performed by assisting one-pot synthesis strategy in aqueous solution at room temperature. The resulting laccase@ZIF-67 composite was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA). The results showed that laccase could be well immobilized on ZIF-67 materials. Laccase@ZIF-67 was stable on storage stability and reuseablility, retaining 88 % (15 days at 4 °C) and 59 % (five reaction cycles) of residual enzyme activity. Laccase@ZIF-67 exhibited relatively stable activity at pH 3-5. In addition, the thermal deactivation kinetic studies of laccase@ZIF-67 showed a lower k value, higher t1/2 and ΔG values along with the enhancement of thermodynamic parameters than that of free laccase, and laccase@ZIF-67 had excellent level of thermostability.

The Progress and Prospect of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks in Cancer Therapy, Antibacterial Activity, and Biomineralization

The progressive development of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), as a subfamily of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and their unique features, including tunable pore size, large surface area, high thermal stability, and biodegradability/biocompatibility, have made them attractive in the field of biomedicine, especially for drug delivery and biomineralization applications. The high porosity of ZIFs gives them the opportunity for encapsulating a high amount of therapeutic drugs, proteins, imaging cargos, or a combination of them to construct advanced multifunctional drug delivery systems (DDSs) with combined therapeutic and imaging capabilities. This review summarizes recent strategies on the design and fabrication of ZIF-based nansystems and their exploration in the biomedical field. First, recent developments for the adjustment of particle size, functionality, and morphology of ZIFs are discussed, which are important for achieving optimized therapeutic/theranostic nanosystems. Second, recent trends on the application of ZIF nanocarriers for the loading of diverse cargos, including anticancer medicines, antibiotic drugs, enzymes, proteins, photosensitizers, as well as imaging and photothermal agents, are investigated in order to understand how multifunctional DDSs can be designed based on the ZIF nanoparticles to treat different diseases, such as cancer and infection. Finally, prospects on the future research direction and applications of ZIF-based nanomedicines are discussed.

Enhancing Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization by magnetic core-shell structured NZVI@MOF derivative hybrids

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) has significantly threatened the environmental health because of its distinct toxicity. A novel magnetic core-shell structured NZVI@ZD composite was designed for simultaneous adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI). NZVI@ZD was synthesized by carbonization of the as-prepared core-shell structure NZVI@zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67). After carbonization, the original ZIF-67 shell shape was preserved well with marginal parts developing to graphitized carbon. Both cobalt (Co) and NZVI nanoparticles were finely dispersed in the porous ZIF-67 derivative (ZD). NZVI@ZD exhibited excellent removal performance for Cr(VI), owing to its high specific surface area and large pore size favorable for Cr(VI) adsorption and diffusion. The maximum adsorption capacity of NZVI@ZD for Cr(VI) was surprisingly as high as 226.5 mg g^-1, surpassing the pristine ZIF-67 (29.35 mg g^-1) and NZVI@ZIF-67 (36.53 mg g^-1). Zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra revealed that electrostatic attraction, reduction and precipitation might be involved in the Cr(VI) removal process by NZVI@ZD, resulting in the conversion of the adsorbed Cr(VI) to Cr(III) of lower toxicity and an eventual immobilization on the NZVI@ZD. The magnetic core-shell structured NZVI@ZD possessed superior adsorptive reactivity for Cr(VI) to most other traditional or newly reported materials, thus should be deemed highly efficient for Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater treatment.

Bioinspired Construction of a Nanozyme-Based H2O2 Homeostasis Disruptor for Intensive Chemodynamic Therapy

The insufficient intracellular H₂O₂ level in tumor cells is closely associated with the limited efficacy of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Despite tremendous efforts, engineering CDT agents with a straightforward and secure H₂O₂ supplying ability remains a great challenge. Inspired by the balance of H₂O₂ generation and elimination in cancer cells, herein, a nanozyme-based H₂O₂ homeostasis disruptor is fabricated to elevate the intracellular H₂O₂ level through facilitating H₂O₂ production and restraining H₂O₂ elimination for enhanced CDT. In the formulation, the disruptor with superoxide dismutase-mimicking activity can convert O₂^•- to H₂O₂, promoting the production of H₂O₂. Simultaneously, the suppression of catalase activity and depletion of glutathione by the disruptor weaken the transformation of H₂O₂ to H₂O. Thus, the well-defined system could perturb the H₂O₂ balance and give rise to the accumulation of H₂O₂ in cancer cells. The raised H₂O₂ level would ultimately amplify the Fenton-like reaction-based CDT efficiency. Our work not only paves a way to engineer alternative CDT agents with a H₂O₂ supplying ability for intensive CDT but also provides new insights into the construction of bioinspired materials.

Biomimetic mineralization of nitrile hydratase into a mesoporous cobalt-based metal-organic framework for efficient biocatalysis

Nitrile hydratases (NHases) have attracted considerable attention owing to their application in the synthesis of valuable amides under mild conditions. However, the poor stability of NHases is still one of the main drawbacks for their industrial application. Recently, mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been explored as an attractive support material for immobilizing enzymes. Here, we encapsulated a recombinant cobalt-type NHase from Aurantimonas manganoxydans into the cobalt-based MOF ZIF-67 by a biomimetic mineralization strategy. The nano-catalyst NHase1229@ZIF-67 shows high catalytic activity for the hydration of 3-cyanopyridine to nicotinamide, and its specific activity reached 29.5 U mg-1. The NHase1229@ZIF-67 nanoparticles show a significant improvement in the thermal stability of NHase1229. The optimum reaction temperature of NHase1229@ZIF-67 is at 50-55 °C, and it still retained 40% of the maximum activity at 70 °C. However, the free NHase1229 completely lost its catalytic activity at 70 °C. The half-lives of NHase1229@ZIF-67 at 30 and 40 °C were 102.0 h and 26.5 h, respectively. NHase1229@ZIF-67 nanoparticles exhibit an excellent cycling performance, and their catalytic efficiency did not significantly decrease in the initial 6 cycles using 0.9 M 3-cyanopyridine as the substrate. In a fed-batch reaction, NHase1229@ZIF-67 can efficiently hydrate 3-cyanopyridine to nicotinamide, and the space-time yield was calculated to be 110 g·L-1·h-1. Therefore, the cobalt-type NHase was immobilized in MOF ZIF-67, which is shown as a potential nanocatalyst for the large-scale industrial preparation of nicotinamide.

Enhanced Kinetic Removal of Ciprofloxacin onto Metal-Organic Frameworks by Sonication, Process Optimization and Metal Leaching Study

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are currently recognized as unique platforms for environmental studies. This study evaluated the potential of nine MOFs from ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and UIO-66 families for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP), a toxic, bio-accumulative, and persistent fluoroquinolone antibiotic. ZIF-67-SO₄, with a rhombic crystalline morphology and 1375 m²/g BET surface area, has the highest CIP adsorption efficiency among the studied MOFs. The mathematical sorption model predicted that the highest CIP removal (99.2%) occurs when adsorbent dose, pH, and agitation time are adjusted to 6.82, 832.4 mg/L, and 39.95 min, respectively. Further studies revealed that the CIP adsorbed onto ZIF-67-SO₄ in monolayer (q_max: 2537.5 mg/g) and chemisorption controlled the rate of the process. Mass transfer kinetic coefficients improved significantly by sonication at 35 KHz in comparison with mechanical agitation. Thermodynamic parameters (minus signs of ∆G° [7.8 to 14.2], positive signs of ∆H° (58.9 KJ/mol), and ∆S° (0.23 KJ/mol·K)) demonstrated the spontaneous, endothermic, and chemical sorption of CIP. The level of cobalt leached from ZIF-67-SO₄ structure varied 1.2–4.5 mg/L, depending on pH, mixing time, and agitation type. In conclusion, the excellent adsorption properties of ZIF-67-SO₄ for CIP, made it an outstanding candidate for environmental protection purposes.

One pot synthesis of α-amylase metal organic framework (MOF)-sponge via dip-coating technique

Enzyme embedded metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are blooming in the field of enzyme immobilization on account of their superior catalytic efficiency, thermal and chemical stability as compared to native enzyme. However, the separation and recovery of enzyme embedded MOF composite is quite challenging due to its nanometer size, high dispersity and low density which limits the reusability. In this work, α-amylase embedded zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF)-67 was fabricated onto melamine sponge using surfactant assisted dip coating technique. This was achieved in single pot making the method facile and rapid. α-Amylase MOF-sponge was analysed and characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and TGA. We demonstrated that the encapsulation could maintain the active conformational structure of α-amylase after immobilization procedure with excellent bioactivity.
