Kinetics for diclofenac degradation by chlorine dioxide in aqueous media: Influences of natural organic matter additives

Oxidative degradation and mineralization of bentazone from water

Bentazone degradation efficiency and mineralization in water solutions using chlorine dioxide treatment were evaluated. Double distilled water and a river water sample spiked with bentazone were studied and compared after chlorine dioxide treatment. Degradation efficiency was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Daphnia magna toxicity testing and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis were used to ascertain the toxicity of the degraded solutions and mineralization degree. Bentazone degradation products were identified using gas chromatography with a triple quadrupole mass detector (GC-MS-MS). A simple mechanistic scheme for oxidative degradation of bentazone was proposed based on the degradation products that were identified. Decrease in D. magna mortality, high degradation efficiency and partial bentazone mineralization were achieved by waters containing bentazone degradation products, which indicate the formation of less toxic compounds than the parent bentazone and effective removal of bentazone from the waters. Bentazone degraded into four main degradation products. Humic acid from Sava River water influenced bentazone degradation, resulting in a lower degradation efficiency in this matrix (about 10% lower than in distilled water). Chlorine dioxide treatment of water to degrade bentazone is efficient and offers a novel approach in the development of new technology for removal of this herbicide from contaminated water.

Rapid removal of diclofenac in aqueous solution by soluble Mn(III) (aq) generated in a novel Electro-activated carbon fiber-permanganate (E-ACF-PM) process

Electrolysis and permanganate (PM) oxidation are two commonly used technologies for water treatment. However, they are often handicapped by their slow reaction rates. To improve the removal efficiency of refractory contaminants, we combined electrolysis with PM using an activated carbon fiber (ACF) as cathode (E-ACF-PM) for the first time to treat diclofenac (DCF) in aqueous solution. Up to 90% DCF was removed in 5 min by E-ACF-PM process. In comparison, only 3.95 and 27.35% of DCF was removed by individual electrolysis and PM oxidation at the same time, respectively. Acidic condition was more conducive to DCF removal. Surprisingly, soluble Mn(III) _(aq) formed on the surface of ACF was demonstrated as the principal oxidizing agent in E-ACF-PM process. Further studies showed that all three components (electrolysis + ACF + PM) were necessary to facilitate the heterogeneous generation of reactive Mn(III) _(aq). Moreover, SEM images and XPS spectra of ACF before and after treatment revealed that the morphologies and elemental compositions of reacted ACF were nearly unchanged during the E-ACF-PM process. ACF can be remained active and utilized to the rapid degradation of DCF in E-ACF-PM process even after reused for 20 times. Therefore, the E-ACF-PM process may provide a novel and effective alternative on the generation of reactive Mn(III) _(aq) in situ for water treatment by green electrochemical reactions.

Photodegradation of diclofenac in aqueous solution by simulated sunlight irradiation: kinetics, thermodynamics and pathways

Diclofenac (DCF) is one of the most frequently detected pharmaceuticals in various water samples. This paper studied the effects of aquatic environmental factors (pH, temperature and dissolved organic matter) on photodegradation of DCF under simulated sunlight. The results demonstrate that degradation pathways proceed via pseudo first-order kinetics in all cases and the photodegradation of DCF by simulated sunlight. Thermodynamic study indicated that the photodegradation course is spontaneous, exothermic and irreversible. The rate constant gradually increased when the pH increased from 3 to 5, then decreased when the pH increased from 5 to 8, and finally increased when the pH further increased from 8 to 12. Humic acid inhibited the photodegradation of DCF. Three kinds of main degradation products were observed by high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and the degradation pathways were suggested. A toxicity test using Photobacterium phosphoreum T₃ Sp indicated the generation of some more toxic products than DCF.
