Preparation of polyethylene polyamine@tannic acid encapsulated MgAl-layered double hydroxide for the efficient removal of copper (II) ions from aqueous solution

Removal of lead ions from aqueous solutions by modified cellulose

The new adsorbent was prepared by mixing cellulose with dicyclohexyl-18- crown-6 via microwave irradiation method and it was used to remove lead ions from aqueous solution. In contrast to the traditional way (in which grafted polymers are produced by using chemical-free radical producers), this method is rapid, reproducible, and gives a high-quality product. Different physicochemical techniques such as FTIR, SEM, and XRD and TGA were used for the characterization of the produced adsorbent. Based on the ANOVA statistical value, the adsorption of Pb2+ ion onto grafted cellulose has been found to be significant, with very low probability (p) values (<0.001). The pH and initial concentration were observed to be the most significant factors that affected the Pb2+ ion removal from the analysis of variance. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir equations were applied to the adsorption of Pb2+ ion and under the optimized conditions, the maximum absorption capacity in modified cellulose of Pb2+ was 58.3 mg/g. Various factors which affect metal ion adsorption, including temperature, power of hydrogen, shaking time, adsorbent quantity, and metal ions concentration were studied. More importantly, the adsorbent could be reused by using 0.1 M nitric acid.

Highly Stable Silicon Anode Enabled by a Water-Soluble Tannic Acid Functionalized Dual-Network Binder

Silicon (Si), a high-capacity electrode material, is crucial for achieving high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, Si suffers from poor cycling stability due to its significant volume changes during operation. In this work, a tannic acid functionalized aqueous dual-network binder with an intramolecular tannic acid functionalized network has been synthesized, which is composed of covalent-cross-linked polyamide and ionic-cross-linked alginate (Alg(Ni)-PAM-TA), and employed as an advanced binder for stabilizing Si anodes. The resultant Alg(Ni)-PAM-TA binder, incorporating diverse functional groups including amide, carboxylic acid, and dynamic hydrogen bonds, can easily interact with both Si nanoparticles and the Cu foil, thereby facilitating the formation of a highly resilient network characterized by exceptional adhesion strength. Moreover, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicate that the Alg(Ni)-PAM-TA network shows an increased intramolecular hydrogen bond number with increasing concentration of TA and a decreased intramolecular hydrogen bond between PAM and Alg as a result of the aggregation behavior of tannic acids themselves. Consequently, the binder significantly enhances the Si electrode's integrity throughout repeated charge/discharge cycles. At a current density of 0.84 A g-1, the Si electrode retains a capacity of 1863.4 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles. This aqueous binder functionalized with the intramolecular network via the incorporation of TA molecules holds great promise for the development of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Tannin complexation with metal ions and its implication on human health, environment and industry: An overview

Tannins, also known as plant polyphenols (PPs), are secondary metabolites widely existing in higher plants and are a kind of natural renewable resource with wide distribution, variety and quantity. Tannin has become an important class of fine chemicals due to the easily modified molecular structure and the properties of antibacterial and antioxidant, combining with protein and complexing with metal ion. Besides being used for tanning leather, tannins are also widely used in wood adhesive, concrete water-reducing agents, oil drilling fluid viscosity-reducing agents, pharmaceutical, mineral processing, water treatment, gas desulfurization, metal anticorrosion, wood anticorrosion, printing and dyeing, liquor clarification, oil antioxidant, daily chemical products and other products preparation. There are two groups of tannins: condensed tannins (CTs) (flavonoid-derived proanthocyanidins) and hydrolysable tannins (HTs) (gallic acid ester-derived). Tannins can form complexes with metals through the ortho-dihydroxyphenolic group(s), especially with transition metals. The structure-activity relationships, stoichiometry, and origin of the insolubility of which were emphasized. Furthermore, this paper proposed an in-depth discussion of the associations of tannins-metal complexes in human health, environment and industries.

Molybdenum Phosphide Quantum Dots Encapsulated by P/N-Doped Carbon for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Acid and Alkaline Electrolytes

A facile and eco-friendly strategy is presented for synthesizing novel nanocomposites, with MoP quantum dots (QDs) as cores and graphitic carbon as shells, these nanoparticles are dispersed in a nitrogen and phosphorus-doped porous carbon and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) substrates (MoP@NPC/CNT). The synthesis involves self-assembling reactions to form single-source precursors (SSPs), followed by pyrolysis at 900 °C in an inert atmosphere to obtain MoP@NPC/CNT-900. The presence of carbon layers on the MoP QDs effectively prevents particle aggregation, enhancing the utilization of active MoP species. The optimized sample, MoP@NPC/CNT-900, exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity and durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It demonstrates a low overpotential of 155 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 76 mV dec-1 , and sustained performance over 20 hours in 0.5 M H2 SO4 . Furthermore, the catalyst shows excellent activity in 1 M KOH, with a relatively low overpotential of 131 mV and long-term durability under constant current input. The exceptional HER activity can be attributed to several factors: the superior performance of MoP QDs, the large surface area and good conductivity of the carbon substrates, and the synergistic effect between MoP and carbon species.

Interfacial Polymerization on Polyethersulfone Ultrafiltration Membrane to Prepare Nanofiltration Layers for Dye Separation

Nanofiltration membranes are of great significance to the treatment of dye wastewater. Interfacial polymerization is a widely used method to fabricate nanofiltration membranes. In this study, the interaction of tannic acid-assisted polyethylene polyamine (PEPA) with terephthalaldehyde (TPAL) was performed on PES ultrafiltration membranes using novel nitrogen-rich amine monomers and relatively less reactive aldehyde-based monomers. A new nanofiltration membrane ((T-P-T)/PES) was prepared by interfacial polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the elemental composition, bonding state, and surface morphology of the membrane surface. The effects of the PEPA deposition time, TPAL concentration, interfacial reaction time, and curing time on the nanofiltration layer were investigated. The modified membrane, prepared under optimal conditions, showed strong dye separation ability. The permeation of the modified membrane could reach 68.68 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1, and the rejection of various dyes was above 99%. In addition, the (T-P-T)/PES membrane showed good stability during long-term dye separation.

Mussel-Based Biomimetic Strategies in Musculoskeletal Disorder Treatment: From Synthesis Principles to Diverse Applications

Musculoskeletal disorders are the second leading cause of disability worldwide, posing a huge global burden to the public sanitation system. Currently, tissue engineering-based approaches act as effective strategies, which are, however, challenging in limited application scenarios. Mussel-based biomimetic materials, exhibit numerous unique properties such as intense adhesion, biocompatibility, moisture resistance, and injectability, to name only a few, and have attracted extensive research interest. In particular, featuring state-of-the-art properties, mussel-inspired biomaterials have been widely explored in innumerable musculoskeletal disorder treatments including osteochondral defects, osteosarcoma, osteoarthritis, ligament rupture, and osteoporosis. Nevertheless, a comprehensive and timely discussion of their applications in musculoskeletal disorders is insufficient. In this review, we emphasize on (1) the main categories and characteristics of mussel foot proteins and their fundamental mechanisms for the spectacular adhesion in mussels; (2) the diverse synthetic methods and modification of various polymers; and (3) the emerging applications of mussel-biomimetic materials, the future perspectives, and challenges, especially in the area of musculoskeletal disorder. We envision that this review will provide a unique and insightful perspective to improve the development of a new generation of mussel biomimetic strategies.

Amphiphilic sodium alginate-polylysine hydrogel with high antibacterial efficiency in a wide pH range

Bacterial infection is a major pathological factor leading to persistent wounds. With the aging of population, wound infection has gradually become a global health-issue. The wound site environment is complicated, and the pH changes dynamically during healing. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new antibacterial materials that can adapt to a wide pH range. To achieve this goal, we developed a thymol-oligomeric tannic acid/amphiphilic sodium alginate-polylysine hydrogel film, which exhibited excellent antibacterial efficacy in the pH range from 4 to 9, achieving the highest achievable 99.993 % (4.2 log units) and 99.62 % (2.4 log units) against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli, respectively. The hydrogel films exhibited excellent cytocompatibility, suggesting that the materials are promising as a novel wound healing material without the concern of biosafety.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Ciprofloxacin by UV Light Using N-Doped TiO2 in Suspension and Coated Forms

The presence of organic compounds such as ciprofloxacin in untreated pharmaceutical wastewater often poses a serious health risk to human and aquatic life when discharged into water bodies. One of the most effective means of removing ciprofloxacin from wastewater is photocatalytic degradation. However, the synthesis of an effective photocatalyst that can degrade the organic pollutant in the wastewater is often a challenge. Hence, this study focuses on the synthesis and application of nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) in suspension and coated forms for the photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin in wastewater by applying UV-light irradiation. The nitrogen-doped TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared by a co-precipitation process and characterized using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of the initial concentration of the ciprofloxacin (6, 12, 18, or 30 ppm), pH (3, 5, 7, or 9), and flow rate (0.4, 0.8, 0.95, or 1.5 L/min) on the degradation of the ciprofloxacin over the N-TiO2 were investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of ciprofloxacin was enhanced by increasing the initial ciprofloxacin concentration, while it was decreased with the increase in the feed flow rate. The best operating conditions were obtained using an initial ciprofloxacin concentration of 30 ppm, pH of 5, and feed flow rate of 0.4 L/min. Under these operating conditions, removal efficiencies of 87.87% and 93.6% were obtained for net TiO2 and N-TiO2 of 5 wt% in suspension form, respectively, while 94.5% ciprofloxacin removal efficiency was obtained using coated 5 wt% N-TiO2 after 2 h of photocatalytic degradation. Based on the response surface optimization strategy, a quadratic model was suggested to obtain mathematical expressions to predict the ciprofloxacin removal efficiency under various studied operational parameters.

Application of functionalized layered double hydroxides for heavy metal removal: A review

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are ionic laminar composites composed of positively charged brucite-like layers with an interlayered region containing charged compensating anions and solvation molecules. Such functional LDHs materials present a strong potential for heavy metal treatment especially for wastewater and soil, due to the large surface area and layered structure. This paper started with the background of techniques for heavy metals treatment and then discussed the potential environmental toxic effects, feasibility, stability of LDH composites. The preparation strategies of LDHs composites, and their application were summarized, followed by main mechanisms involving chelation, complexation, surface precipitation, ion exchange. This work also presented the potential environmental toxic effects, feasibility, stability of LDHs composites, reuse of waste liquid and the ratio adjustment of M²⁺ and N³⁺ for LDHs synthesis. While most efforts focused on improving the absorption capacity of LDHs by composites construction, ignoring the toxicity effects and detailed mechanism investigation. Based on a thorough review of the latest development, the challenges and perspectives would be proposed, offering promising insights on environmental purification via LDHs based materials.

Optimization of chitosan/tannic acid@ ZnFe layered double hydroxide bionanocomposite film for removal of reactive blue 4 using a response surface methodology

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are great adsorbents for anionic pollutants, but are in a powder form that leads to challenges in solid-liquid separation, low hydraulic conductivity, and handling. Herein, novel bionanocomposite films containing chitosan (Cs), tannic acid (TA), and LDH were fabricated and applied for the removal of reactive blue 4 (RB4). A response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design was applied to study the effect of operating parameters (TA%: 0-20, LDH%: 0-20, pH: 5-9, adsorbent dosage: 0.5-1.5 g L^-1, time: 30-90 min) on RB4 dye removal (DR%). A quadratic regression equation was successfully developed to predict the response (R²: 0.95). The obtained optimized condition was TA%: 10, LDH%: 20, pH: 5, adsorbent dosage: 1.5 g L^-1, and time: 71 min that resulted in DR%: 98.2. The best-fitted adsorption isotherm and kinetic models were linear Langmuir and nonlinear pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The maximum capacity of adsorption for the optimized film was 406 mg g^-1. The obtained thermodynamic parameters implied that the process of adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous. The reusability studies showed that the DR% was decreased from 93% for the first cycle to 69%, 57%, and 56% for the second, third and fourth cycle, respectively.

Tannic acid: a crosslinker leading to versatile functional polymeric networks: a review

With the thriving of mussel-inspired polyphenol chemistry as well as the demand for low-cost analogues to polydopamine in adhesive design, tannic acid has gradually become a research focus because of its wide availability, health benefits and special chemical properties. As a natural building block, tannic acid could be used as a crosslinker either supramolecularly or chemically, ensuring versatile functional polymeric networks for various applications. Up to now, a systematic summary on tannic-acid-based networks has still been waiting for an update and outlook. In this review, the common features of tannic acid are summarized in detail, followed by the introduction of covalent and non-covalent crosslinking methods leading to various tannic-acid-based materials. Moreover, recent progress in the application of tannic acid composites is also summarized, including bone regeneration, skin adhesives, wound dressings, drug loading and photothermal conversion. Above all, we also provide further prospects concerning tannic-acid-crosslinked materials.

The Performance and Mechanism of a Mg-Al Double-Layer Oxide in Chloride ion Removal from an Aqueous Solution

The increasing threat of chloride ions (Cl⁻) has led researchers to explore efficient removal technologies. Sewage treatment with a double-layer hydroxide/oxide (LDH/LDO) is receiving increasing attention. In this work, Mg-Al LDO adsorbents were produced by the calcination of the Mg-Al LDH precursor, which was constituted by improved coprecipitation. The influence of calcination temperature, calcination time, adsorbent dosage, Cl⁻ initial concentration, contact time, and adsorption temperature on Cl⁻ elimination was investigated systematically. The experimental results showed that a better porous structure endowed the Mg-Al LDO with outstanding adsorption properties for Cl⁻. The adsorption process was well matched to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Freundlich model. Under optimal conditions, more than 97% of the Cl⁻ could be eliminated. Moreover, the removal efficiency was greater than 90% even after 11 adsorption–desorption cycles. It was found that the electrostatic interaction between Cl⁻ and the positively charged Mg-Al LDO laminate, coupled with the reconstruction of the layer structure, was what dominated the Cl⁻ removal process.

CoAl-LDHs@Fe3O4 decorated with cobalt nanowires and cobalt nanoparticles for a heterogeneous electro-Fenton process to degrade 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid and glyphosate

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton is one of the promising technologies to degrade refractory organic phosphonates. In this work, CoNWs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄ and CoNPs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄ were successfully synthesized by a co-precipitation method and applied to degrade 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and glyphosate (PMG) via an electro-Fenton process. The results indicated that the removal rate of HEDP (100 mg L⁻¹) and PMG (100 mg L⁻¹) by CoNWs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄ increased from 62.09% and 95.31% to 82.45% and 100%, respectively. The CoNPs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄ electro-Fenton system could remove 70.03% of HEDP and nearly 100% of PMG within 2 hours at a pH of 3. Moreover, we compared the SEM, EDS, XRD and BET results of CoNWs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄ with those of CoNPs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄. The effects of initial pH, CoNW dosage and reaction time on the degradation of HEDP and PMG were discussed. CoNWs@CoAl-LDHs@Fe₃O₄ could even remove 71.03% of HEDP at a neutral pH. After four cycles of repeated use at a pH of 3, the removal rate of HEDP by CoNWs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄ was still higher than 70%. Radical quenching experiments revealed that ˙OH is the dominant active species participating in the heterogeneous electro-Fenton process. Finally, we would talk about the mechanism of the CoNWs@CoAl-LDHs/Fe₃O₄-based electro-Fenton system.

Cobalt nanowires and cobalt particles are introduced into CoAl-LDHs@Fe₃O₄, and the effect of the former is better in the application of electro-Fenton process.

Direct grafting of cellulose nanocrystals with poly(ionic liquids) via Gamma-ray irradiation and their utilization for adsorptive removal of CR

In this work, a simple but effective method based on Gamma-ray initiated polymerization was reported for the first time through direct irradiation of CNCs and ionic liquid monomer to obtain poly (ionic liquids) functionalized CNCs (IL@CNCs). The adsorptive removal of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solution by IL@CNCs was also examined and the influence of contact time, pH values, initial concentrations and temperature on adsorption behavior was investigated in detail. Under the same adsorption conditions, the adsorption capacity was increased from 59.72 mg/g (CNCs) to 195.83 mg/g (IL@CNCs). The results of the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics showed that the experimental data were more suitable to be described by the Freundlich isotherm adsorption model and the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process of CR on the surface of the adsorbent was endothermic and spontaneous. When the aqueous solution was acidic, it was more conducive to the adsorption of CR. At 100% breakthrough, the value of adsorption capacity is 199.95 mg/g and the value of partition coefficient is 9.64. Moreover, the adsorption capacity is expected to be further improved through adjustment of polymerization parameters and this method can also be used for preparation other poly (ionic liquids) modified composites.

Functionalized layered double hydroxides composite bio-adsorbent for efficient copper(II) ion encapsulation from wastewater

In this study, naturally abundant and inexpensive bamboo was used to make cheaper activated charcoal for efficient encapsulation of toxic copper (Cu(II)) ion from wastewater. The functionalized bamboo charcoal-Layered double hydroxides (BC-LDHs) composite bio-adsorbent was prepared using co-precipitation method. The composite bio-adsorbent was exploited to eliminate Cu(II) ion with high sensitivity and selectivity from contaminated water. The adsorption parameters including the effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and effect of initial concentration were optimized in systematic way and the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated for potential use in real sample treatment. The physicochemical properties and morphological structure of the adsorbent were examined using X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electronic Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric Analysis to understand the Cu(II) ion adsorption mechanism. The adsorption results revealed that the BC-LDH could remove almost 100% of Cu(II) ion from aqueous solution at pH range between 3.0 and 6.0 within 30 min. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was determined to be 85.47 mg/g based on the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption equilibrium data were well-fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model (R² = 0.998) and the experimental kinetic data were supported by the pseudo-second order model (R² = 0.999). The BC-LDH could be reused without losing its adsorption performance in several cycles after successful regeneration with 0.10 M HCl. The Cu(II) ion removal mechanism was postulated with intercalated ion exchange, surface precipitation and interaction between BC-LDH and surface functionalities. Therefore, the highly functional BC-LDH composite could be a promising adsorbent for efficient Cu(II) ion removal from wastewater.

Development and Characterization of Cornstarch-Based Bioplastics Packaging Film Using a Combination of Different Plasticizers

This work aims to develop cornstarch (CS) based films using fructose (F), glycerol (G), and their combination (FG) as plasticizers with different ratios for food packaging applications. The findings showed that F-plasticized film had the lowest moisture content, highest crystallinity among all films, and exhibited the highest tensile strength and thermostability. In contrast, G-plasticized films showed the lowest density and water absorption with less crystallinity compared to the control and the other plasticized film. In addition, SEM results indicated that FG-plasticized films had a relatively smoother and more coherent surface among the tested films. The findings have also shown that varying the concentration of the plasticizers significantly affected the different properties of the plasticized films. Therefore, the selection of a suitable plasticizer at an appropriate concentration may significantly optimize film properties to promote the utilization of CS films for food packaging applications.

State-of-art review on preparation, surface functionalization and biomedical applications of cellulose nanocrystals-based materials

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a class of sustainable nanomaterials that are obtained from plants and microorganisms. These naturally derived nanomaterials are of abundant hydroxyl groups, well biocompatibility, low cost and biodegradable potential, making them suitable and promising candidates for various applications, especially in biomedical fields. In this review, the recent advances and development on the preparation, surface functionalization and biomedical applications of CNCs-based materials have been summarized and outlined. The main context of this paper could be divided into the following three parts. In the first part, the preparation strategies based on physical, chemical, enzymatic and combination techniques for preparation of CNCs have been summarized. The surface functionalization methods for synthesis CNCs-based materials with designed properties and functions were outlined in the following section. Finally, the current state about applications of CNCs-based materials for tissue engineering, medical hydrogels, biosensors, fluorescent imaging and intracellular delivery of biological agents have been highlighted. Moreover, current issues and future directions about the above aspects have also pointed out and discussed. We believe this review will attract great research attention of scientists from materials, chemistry, biomedicine and other disciplines. It will also provide some important insights on the future development of CNCs-based materials especially in biomedical fields.

Functionalized Biomass Carbon-Based Adsorbent for Simultaneous Removal of Pb2+ and MB in Wastewater

It is of great significance to realize the sustainable development of the environment to synthesize functional materials by value-added utilization of waste resources. Herein, a composite material of polyacrylic acid/lignosulfonate sodium/cotton biochar (PAA/LS/BC) was successfully prepared by grafting polyacrylic acid with functionalized waste cotton biochar and lignosulfonate sodium. The obtained absorbent showed prominent capture ability toward Pb²⁺ and methylene blue (MB) with capture characteristics of the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. This experiment explored the adsorption performance of the adsorbent for pollutants at different conditions, and further revealed the selective adsorption of Pb²⁺ and MB in the mixed system. Analysis confirmed that electrostatic attraction and complexation are the most critical methods to remove contaminants. Additionally, the regeneration and stability experiment showed that the adsorption capacity of PAA/LS/BC for pollutants did not significantly decrease after five runs of adsorption–desorption. Various results can demonstrate that the adsorbent has excellent performance for removing pollutants and can be used as a material with development potential in the field of adsorption.

The Sustainability of Waste Management Models in Circular Economies

The circular economy (CE) is considered a key economic model to meet the challenge of sustainable development. Strenous efforts are focused on the transformation of waste into resources that can be reintroduced into the economic system through proper management. In this way, the linear and waste-producing value chain problems are solved, making them circular, and more sustainable solutions are proposed in those chains already benefiting from circular processes, so that waste generation and waste are reduced on the one hand, and on the other, the non-efficient consumption of resources decreases. In the face of this current tide, there is another option that proposes a certain nuance, based on the premise that, although circular systems promote sustainability, it does not mean that they are in themselves sustainable, given that, in the first place, the effects of CE on sustainable development are not fully known and, on the other hand, the CE model includes the flow of materials, with only scant consideration of the flow of non-material resources (water, soil and energy). This paper aims to contrast both currents from an empirical viewpoint. To achieve this, a sustainability analysis of the circular waste management systems measured through a sustainability indicator, the carbon footprint (CF), as a main sustainable indicator in climate change action, is carried out. A crucial difference between circular models that promote waste management and those that do not is found in the collective systems of extended producer responsibility (or CPR). One of the most efficient recycling processes in Europe, waste tire management, has been chosen. Thus, the aim is to verify the sense of including environmental sustainability indicators, as CF, in the process of these systems. A sustainability management model (SBA) applies to End-of Life tire collection systems (ELT). This model is based on the accumulation of environmental impacts through the activities that generate them. To be transparent, this study requires a publicly recognized CF, so the study is focused on SIGNUS, the main Spanish waste tires CPR. The results achieved allow us to conclude that CF is much lower using CPR than non-linear processes. Despite the role that CPR have in the management and use of waste as secondary raw material, it is a priority to focus efforts on their redesign in order to reduce waste. In terms of circular economy, all actions are necessary in order to achieve system efficiencies, even when externalities occur in this process.

Facile construction of ratiometric electrochemical immunosensor using hierarchical PtCoIr nanowires and porous SiO2@Ag nanoparticles for accurate detection of septicemia biomarker

Procalcitonin (PCT) is a sensitive and specific biomarker for sepsis diagnosis. In this study, a novel ratio-typed electrochemical immunosensor was constructed for reliable and sensitive assay of PCT based on hierarchical PtCoIr nanowires/polyethylene polyamine-grafted-ferrocene (PtCoIr HNWs/PEPA-Fc) and porous SiO₂@Ag nanoparticles-toluidine blue (porous SiO₂@Ag NPs-TB). Importantly, the PtCoIr HNWs/PEPA-Fc was first modified on the sensing interface, which harvested stable and strong electrochemical signals for readout of Fc due to the enriched anchoring sites created by the PtCoIr HNWs. Meanwhile, porous SiO₂@Ag NPs-TB behaved as the label to conjugate with secondary antibody (Ab₂), which also provided another strong detection signals originated from TB confined in such porous structures. The resulting immunosensor displayed a measurable output of procalcitonin (PCT) in the dynamic scope of 0.001 ~ 100 ng mL^-1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.46 pg mL^-1 (S/N = 3). Moreover, we exploited this strategy for PCT assay in a diluted human serum sample with acceptable results, exhibiting promising applications in the clinical analysis.

Efficient Adsorption of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solutions by Modified Alginate Beads after the Removal of Cu(II) Ions

This work dealt with a potential and effective method to reuse modified alginate beads after the removal of Cu(II) ions for efficient adsorption of tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions. The modified alginate beads were fabricated by a polyacrylamide (PAM) network interpenetrated in alginate-Ca2+ network (PAM/CA) decorated with polyethylene glycol as a pore-forming agent. The porous PAM/CA was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms, adsorption stability, and reusability studies of the adsorbent toward Cu(II) ions were scrutinized. The column performance of porous PAM/CA was tested with Cu(II)-containing electroplating wastewater. After Cu(II) adsorption, the Cu(II)-adsorbed PAM/CA (PAM/CA@Cu) was applied to remove TC from aqueous solutions without any regeneration process. The effects of pH, initial TC concentration, ionic strength, and coexisting ions on the adsorption were also discussed in detail. Compared with many reported adsorbents, the PAM/CA@Cu exhibited an excellent adsorption performance toward TC with a maximum adsorption capacity of 356.57 mg/g predicted by the Langmuir model at pH 5.0 and 30 °C with the absence of coexisting ions. The possible adsorption mechanism of TC onto the PAM/CA@Cu was revealed.

Development of polyaminated chitosan-zirconium(IV) complex bead adsorbent for highly efficient removal and recovery of phosphorus in aqueous solutions

The aim of this work is to examine the adsorption performance and mechanism of phosphorus (P) onto polyethyene polyamine (PEPA) grafted chitosan-zirconium(IV) composite beads (CS-Zr-PEPA) from aqueous solutions. The morphology, functional groups, and surface area of the CS-Zr-PEPA beads were characterized by SEM, FTIR, and BET analysis. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted via different operating parameters such as solution pH, initial phosphate concentration, co-existing anions and temperature. The adsorption kinetics, equilibrium isotherms and adsorption stability of the adsorbent were scrutinized. In comparison with other CS-based beads, the CS-Zr-PEPA had a greater affinity towards P and exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 103.96 mg-P/g predicted by Langmuir mode. The reusability studies of CS-Zr-PEPA beads were carried out. The CS-Zr-PEPA beads exhibit preferable sequestration of P through specific interactions, as further demonstrated by studying physicochemical characteristics of the virgin beads and P-adsorbed beads using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The column performance of CS-Zr-PEPA beads was tested with P-containing wastewater. Results indicated that the developed CS-Zr-PEPA composite beads could be utilized as a promising adsorbent for effective removal and recovery of P from water and wastewater.

Ag-doped magnetic metal organic framework as a novel nanostructured material for highly efficient antibacterial activity

In the last decades, numerous attempts have been made to prevent microbial pollution spreading, using antibacterial agents. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) belongs to a subgroup of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) merits of attention due to the zinc ion clusters and its effective antibacterial activity. In this work, Ag-doped magnetic microporous γ-Fe₂O₃@SiO₂@ZIF-8-Ag (FSZ-Ag) was successfully synthesized by a facile methodology in room temperature and used as an antibacterial agent against the growth of the Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Several characterization methods were applied to analyze the properties of the materials, and the results confirmed the accuracy of the synthesis procedure. Silver ions have employed to enhance the efficiency of antibacterial activity. As the results illustrated, FSZ-Ag nanostructured material had superior performance to inactive E. coli and S. aureus in growth inhibition test in liquid media. The best antibacterial activity as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 100 mg/L of FSZ-Ag against both bacteria. Leaching rates of silver ions showed that 80% of Ag released in the solutions, which was responsible for inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Also, fluorescence microscopy was used to investigate bacterial viability after 20 h contacting FSZ-Ag to distinguish live and dead bacteria by staining with DAPI and PI fluorescence stains. This novel magnetic nanostructured material is an excellent promising candidate to use in biological applications as high potential bactericidal materials.

Surface grafting of fluorescent polymers on halloysite nanotubes through metal-free light-induced controlled polymerization: Preparation, characterization and biological imaging

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are a kind of aluminosilicate clay with a unique hollow tubular structure that has been intensively explored for various applications especially in biomedical fields owing to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegrading potential and low cost. Surface modification of HNTs with functional polymers will greatly improve their properties and endow new functions for biomedical applications. In this work, a light-induced reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was introduced to successfully prepare HNTs based fluorescent HNTs/poly(PEGMA-Fl) composites in the presence of oxygen using diacrylate-fluorescein and poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) as the monomers. Without other catalysts, heating, and deoxygenation procedure, the polymerization process can take place under mild conditions. Besides, owing to the introduction of fluorescein and PEGMA on the surface of HNTs, the resultant HNTs/poly(PEGMA-Fl) composites display high water dispersibility and stable fluorescence. The results from cell viability examination and confocal laser scanning microscopy also demonstrated that HNTs/poly(PEGMA-Fl) composites could be internalized by L929 cells with bright fluorescence and low cytotoxicity. Taken together, we developed a novel photo-initiated RAFT polymerization method for the fabrication of HNTs based fluorescent polymeric composites with great potential for biomedical applications. More importantly, many other multifunctional HNTs based polymer composites could also be fabricated through a similar strategy owing to good designability of RAFT polymerization.

Synthesize of β-cyclodextrin functionalized dendritic fibrous nanosilica and its application for the removal of organic dye (malachite green)

Dye removal from industrial waste water has become an important issue. The highvisibility, undesirability and recalcitrance are the significant environmental problemfor the dyes. In the present work,β-cyclodextrin functionalized KCC-1 (KCC-1-NH-β-CD)was synthesized and utilized to the removal of hazardous malachite green. In order to study the morphology of the synthesized nano adsorbent, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were obtained from the surface of the sample. Additionally, the functionalization of KCC-1 with β-cyclodextrin was confirmed with Furrier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The textural property of KCC-1 was verified using nitrogen adsorption/ desorption analysis (BET equation). UV-Vis spectroscopy utilized for the investigation of malachite green by KCC-1-NH-β-CD. Specific surface area of the adsorbent was calculated to be 140 m² /g and it can be stated that the synthesized nano adsorbent has high removal efficiency. It should be noted that the adsorption capacity of the employed nano adsorbent was more than 95%, which could be attributed to high porosity of β-cyclodextrin functionalized KCC-1.
