Electrocatalytic behavior of AgBr NPs as modifier of carbon past electrode in the presence of methanol and ethanol in aqueous solution: A kinetic study

Designing ultrathin Fe doped Ta2O5-x nanobelts for highly enhanced ammonia photosynthesis

Solar-light photosynthesis of ammonia form N2 reduction in ultrapure water over the artificial photocatalysts is attractive but still challenging compared with Haber-Bosch process. In this work, ultrathin Fe-Ta2O5-x nanobelts were fabricated via the controllable solvothermal process for ammonia photosynthesis. The formed oxygen vacancies and Fe doping narrowed their bandgap energies and promoted the carriers' separation and transfer for Fe-Ta2O5-x nanobelts. In addition, Fe doping also resulted in the reduced working functions of the samples, indicating a weaker electron binding restriction and stronger separation and transfer of photo-induced carriers. The experimental results showed that Fe-Ta2O5-x nanobelts showed remarkably enhanced photocatalytic ammonia production performance under simulated sunlight irradiation, and the relevant ammonia production rate reached approximately 3030.86 μM g-1 h-1, which was 9.63 times of pristine Ta2O5-x and 491.0 times of commercial Ta2O5, and a relatively stable photocatalytic ammonia production performance under simulated sunlight irradiation for Fe-Ta2O5-x nanobelts. Meanwhile, it was also found that Fe doping has great influences on the photocatalytic performance under visible light and simulated sunlight irradiation, mainly because of their suitable bandgap energies and enhanced solar-light harvesting capacity. Current work indicates the great potentials of ultrathin tantalum-based functional materials for high-efficiency ammonia photosynthesis.

Preparation and characterization of cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogels for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange

Biopolymer-based hydrogels have received great attention in wastewater treatment due to their excellent properties, e.g., high adsorption capacity, fast kinetics, reusability and ease of operation. In the present work, cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogels were prepared via co-dissolution and regeneration process as well as hydrothermal in situ synthesis of β-FeOOH. Effect of β-FeOOH loading on the properties of the composite hydrogels and the removal efficiency of methyl orange (MO) was investigated. Results showed that β-FeOOH was uniformly loaded onto the hydrogel framework, and the nanoporous structure of composite hydrogels could increase not only the effective contact area between β-FeOOH and the pollutants but also the active sites. Moreover, the increased β-FeOOH loading led to the enhanced MO removal rate under light conditions. When the loading time was extended from 6 h to 9 h, the MO removal rate increased by 21%, which can be mainly due to the photocatalytic degradation. In addition, MO removal rate reached 97.75% within 40 min under optimal conditions and attained 80.81% after five repetitions. The trapping experiment and EPR results indicated that the main active species were hydrogel radicals and holes. Consequently, this work provides an effective preparation approach for cellulose-chitosan/β-FeOOH composite hydrogel with high adsorption and photocatalytic degradation, which would hold great promise for wastewater treatment applications.

Toward an Improved Electrocatalytic Determination of Immunomodulator COVID Medication Baricitinib Using Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Nickel Hybrid

The study presents a first electrochemical method for the determination of the immunomodulator drug Baricitinib (BARI), crucial in managing COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen support. A unique electrode was developed by modifying graphite carbon nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) with functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f.MWCNTs), resulting in nanohybrids tailored for highly sensitive BARI detection. Comparative analysis revealed the superior electrocatalytic performance of the nanohybrid-modified electrode over unmodified counterparts and other modifications, attributed to synergistic interactions between f.MWCNTs and nickel nanoparticles. Under optimized conditions, the sensors exhibited linear detection within a concentration range from 4.00 × 10-8 to 5.56 × 10-5 M, with a remarkably low detection limit of 9.65 × 10-9 M. Notably, the modified electrode displayed minimal interference from common substances and demonstrated high precision in detecting BARI in plasma and medicinal formulations, underscoring its clinical relevance and potential impact on COVID-19 treatment strategies.

Photocatalytic degradation of Acid Red 18 by synthesized AgCoFe2O4@Ch/AC: Recyclable, environmentally friendly, chemically stable, and cost-effective magnetic nano hybrid catalyst

Chitosan (Ch) is a linear biodegradable natural carbohydrate polymer and the most appealing biopolymer, such as low-cost biodegradability, biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, and non-toxicity. In this case, Ch was utilized to synthesize AgCoFe2O4@Ch/Activated Carbon (AC) by the modified microwave-assisted co-precipitation method. The physical and chemical structure of magnetic nanocomposites was analyzed and characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Diffuse Reflection Spectroscopy (DRS), Value stream mapping (VSM), Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR) and BET. The effects of various parameters on the removal of dye (Acid Red18), including catalyst dose, dye concentration, pH, and time were studied. Results showed that the highest removal efficiencies were 96.68 % and 84 % for the synthetic sample and actual wastewater, respectively, in optimal conditions (pH: 3, the initial dye concentration: 10 mgL-1, the catalyst dose: 0.14 gL-1, time: 50 min). Mineralization, according to the COD analysis, was 89.56 %. Photocatalytic degradation kinetics of Acid Red 18 followed pseudo-first order and Langmuir-Hinshelwood with constants of kc = 0.12 mg L-1 min-1 and KL-H = 0.115 Lmg-1. Synthesized photocatalytic AgCoFe2O4@Ch/AC showed high stability and after five recycling cycles was able to remove the pollutant with an efficiency of 85.6 %. So, the synthesized heterogenous magnetic nanocatalyst AgCoFe2O4@Ch/AC was easily recycled from aqueous solutions and it can be used in the removal of dyes from industries with high efficiency.

Oxygen vacancies enhanced electrocatalytic water splitting of P-FeMoO4 initiated via phosphorus doping

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are abundant and cost-effective materials. However, poor conductivity and low intrinsic activity limit their application in electrolyzed water catalysts. Herein, we prepared P-FeMoO4 in situ on nickel foam (P-FMO@NF) by phosphorylation-modified FeMoO4 to optimize its electrocatalytic properties. Interestingly, phosphorus doping is accompanied by the generation of oxygen vacancies and surface phosphates. Oxygen vacancies accelerated Mo dissolution during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), leading to the rapid reconfiguration of P-FMO@NF to FeOOH and regulating the electronic structure of P-FMO@NF. The formation of phosphates is caused by the substitution of some molybdates with phosphates, which further increases the amount of oxygen vacancies. Hence, the OER overpotential of P-FMO@NF at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 is only 206 mV, and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential is 154 mV. It was assembled into a water splitting cell with a voltage of just 1.59 V at 10 mA cm-2 and shows excellent stability over 50 h. These excellent electrocatalytic properties are mainly attributed to the oxygen vacancies, which improve the interfacial charge transfer properties of the catalysts. This study provides new insights into phosphorus doping and offers a new perspective on the design of electrocatalysts.

Removal of microplastics in food packaging industry wastewaters with electrocoagulation process: Optimization by Box-Behnken design

Currently, the vast majority of studies on microplastics (MPs) focus on determining the quantity and presence of these particles in various receiving environments and their treatment in domestic wastewater treatment plants. However, little research has been conducted on the treatment of microplastics in industrial effluent. Therefore, in this study, effluent samples from the cooling water tank of a local food packaging manufacturing company were analyzed to determine the presence and quantity of MPs for the first time. MPs removal from industrial wastewater using the electrocoagulation (EC) method was optimized using the Box Behnken Design (BBD). A second-order model was developed to estimate the microplastic removal efficiency, and the R2, adjusted R2, and predicted R2 of the model were 0.9994, 0.9985, and 0.9962, respectively. The optimal reaction parameters resulting in the maximum removal rate of microplastics (99 %) were determined to be pH 6.74, current density of 3.16 mA cm-2, and duration of 13.58 min. The cost of microplastic treatment per m3 of wastewater in the EC system, operated under optimal conditions, was calculated as 0.125 $. In this study, it was concluded that the EC process is a highly efficient technique for the removal of MPs from industrial wastewater at a low cost. Determining the most favorable conditions with BBD for the EC process at the feasibility stage of treatment plants will provide economic benefits and increase treatment efficiency during the installation of large-scale plants.

Self-propelled nanojets an interfacial Schottky junctions modulated oxygen vacancies enriched for enhanced photo-Fenton degradation of organic contaminant: Improving H2O2 generation, Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle and enhancing plant metabolism

The study reports an innovative approach on sunlit driven heterostructure photocatalytic generation of H₂O₂ and removal of cefixime. In the present work, we have fabricated Mn/Mg doped CoFe₂O₄ modified CaCr₂O₄ decorated by Ag₃PO₄ quantum dots (Ag₃PO₄ QDs), a p-n-p nano heterojunction. The study promotes the photocatalytic production of H₂O₂ and self-Fenton photocatalytic degradation of cefixime. Egg white-assisted synthesis of Mn-doped CoFe₂O₄ causes the lattice oxygen defect, which enhances the photocatalytic activity. Lattice oxygen defect enable the adsorption of O₂, which enable the conversion of •O² in the valence band of CoFe₂O₄ for the endogenous production of H₂O₂. The higher in the surface area enhance the photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Mn-CoFe₂O₄-CaCr₂O₄-Ag₃PO₄ QDs enables the complete photocatalytic degradation of cefixime (99.9%) and the complete removal was determined by total organic carbon (TOC) removal and it was around 99.4%. Meanwhile the photocatalytic degradation pathway of cefixime was determined by LC-MS/MS. Reusability of the nano heterojunction was determined by six cycle test, and the reusability of the nano heterojunction was 99.8%. Further, the toxicity of the nanomaterial was studied in maize plant and the results shows that the nanoheterojunction enhances the maize growth. The study systematically reveals the robust activity of nano heterojunction for sustainable water treatment.

Novel La3+/Sm3+ co-doped Bi5O7I with efficient visible-light photocatalytic activity for advanced treatment of wastewater: Internal mechanism, TC degradation pathway, and toxicity analysis

Controlling semiconductor photocatalysts by doping rare-earth ions is an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic performance. Simple solvothermal and calcination methods were used to prepare La³⁺ and Sm³⁺ modified Bi₅O₇I nanomaterials. Some characterizations such as XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, UV-vis, etc. were carried out to explore its structural composition and photoelectrochemical properties. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by simulating the degradation of TC and RhB under visible-light irradiation. The degradation results showed that the photocatalytic efficiency of 4S4L-Bi₅O₇I was the best among the samples with the 100% degradation rate of TC (Tetracycline hydrochloride) and 93% of RhB (Rhodamine B). The capture experiment and ESR test proved that the active substances that play a role in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants were ·O₂^-, ¹O₂ and h⁺, and on this basis, the possible degradation mechanism was proposed. The final results showed that La/Sm co-doping expanded the light absorption range of Bi₅O₇I and improved the charge separation efficiency and the specific surface area. Besides, the surface defects were formed on the surface of Bi₅O₇I due to ion-doping, which could catch e^- to promote the separation and transfer of carriers and improve the photocatalytic activity. LC-MS was used to analyze the possible degradation pathways of TC. And the toxicity of TC was also analyzed via T.E.S.T and Toxtree. The results showed comprehensive toxicity of TC was decreased by 4S4L-Bi₅O₇I so that the overall water pollution was reduced. This work can provide a reference for the subsequent development of bismuth-based photocatalysts.

A core/shell TiO2 magnetized molecularly imprinted photocatalyst (MMIP@TiO2): synthesis and its photodegradation activity towards sulfasalazine

Although the selectivity of TiO₂ for the degradation of target molecules is not enough, it is a broadly employed photocatalyst for the degradation of many pollutants. Molecularly imprinted compounds owing to their extreme recognition specificity have become increasingly popular for preparing selective photocatalysts. In this work, based on molecularly imprinted magnetized TiO₂ (MMIP@TiO₂), a selective photocatalyst was prepared. Via the co-precipitation method, Fe₃O₄ particles were prepared and coated respectively by SiO₂, vinyl end groups, and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP). The synthesized photocatalyst was characterized by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and photoluminescence analysis (PL). The photocatalyst was then used to degrade the sulfasalazine pharmaceutical pollutant under UV irradiation. An average crystallite size of 9 nm was obtained for the MMIP@TiO₂ sample from the Scherrer formula and 34.5 nm by the Williamson-Hall formula. The results revealed that compared to the non-imprinted counterpart, the molecularly imprinted photocatalyst had significantly higher efficiency and selectivity for the degradation of target molecules. The process was forwarded with 90% efficiency within 10 min. Optimal conditions were 10.0 min irradiation when 25 mL SSZ solution (50 mg/L), 0.07 g/L catalyst dose, and pH 6.0 were applied. The maximum removal efficiency was calculated to be 92%. The external magnetic field quickly removed the photocatalyst from the solution and regenerated it. It was revealed that after each regeneration cycle, the efficiency dropped. Nevertheless, 63% of the preliminary effectiveness remained after four regeneration steps.

Removal and toxic forecast of microplastics treated by electrocoagulation: Influence of dissolved organic matter

In recent years, the break of COVID-19 makes the large use of disposable products, which causes the removal of microplastics become an imperative problem. Electrocoagulation is one of the effective removal technologies, but there is hardly research concentrating on the effect of substrate in the actual water on the microplastics removal with electrocoagulation. As an important role of water bodies, dissolved organic matter (DOM) has a vital and inevitable effect on the efficiency of electrocoagulation. In this study, the effect of DOM in tailwater on microplastics during electrocoagulation is elucidated by comparing the electrocoagulation treatment results between simulated wastewater and tailwater, using parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and zeta potential analyzer. Three kinds of microplastic particles (i.e. polypropylene, polyethylene, and polymethyl methacrylate) were added into each of the two kinds of wastewaters to form six electrocoagulation systems. Results show that DOM in tailwater promotes the production of flocs and free radicals during electrocoagulation process. Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ are adsorbed on the surface of DOM molecules and combined with •OH form flocs. Although DOM accelerates the production of free radicals and thus promotes the aging of microplastics, flocs with DOM as crystal nucleus can prevent toxic substances and small-sized microplastics from leaching into water again. Therefore, electrocoagulation is preferred to removal microplastics in water with high concentration of DOM. This study provides a significant reference for microplastics removal by electrocoagulation in actual water, and promote the practical application of electrocoagulation for microplastics removal in water treatment.

Recent advances in the electrochemical applications of Ni-based metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs) and their derivatives

Nickel-based metal-organic skeletal materials (Ni-MOFs) are a new class of inorganic materials that have aroused attention of investigators during past couple of years. They offer advantages such as high specific surface area, structural diversity, tunable framework etc. This assorted class of materials exhibited catalytic activity and electrochemical properties and display wide range of applications in the fields of electrochemical sensing, electrical energy storage and electrocatalysis. In this context, the presented review focuses on strategies to improve the electrochemical performance and stability of Ni-MOFs through the optimization of synthesis conditions, the construction of composite materials, and the preparation of derivatives of precursors. The review also presents the applications of Ni-MOFs and their derivatives as electrochemical sensors, energy storage devices, and electrocatalysts. In addition, the challenges and further electrochemical development prospects of Ni-MOFs have been discussed.

EDTA salt modified carbon paste electrode for square wave voltammetric determination of theophylline in pharmaceutical tablet formulation

In this study, a square wave voltammetric method for determination of theophylline in tablet formulation based on EDTA salt modified carbon paste electrode is presented. CV, FT-IR, and EIS results confirmed modification of the carbon paste with EDTA salt. In contrast to the unmodified carbon paste electrode, the modified carbon paste electrode showed irreversible oxidation of theophylline with considerable current enhancement. Investigation of the effect of scan rate on the Ip and Ep response of the modified electrode for theophylline revealed predominantly diffusion controlled oxidation kinetics. Under the optimized conditions, square wave oxidative peak current of theophylline in pH 7.0 PBS showed linear dependence on concentration in the range 10–200 μM with determination coefficient (R²), limit of detection, and limit of quantification of 0.99782, 0.0257 μM, and 0.0857 μM, respectively. Detection of an amount of theophylline in the analyzed tablet formulation with 1.85% error from its nominal content (120 mg/tablet) confirmed the accuracy of the developed method. Spike and interference recovery results of 98.59%, and 95.7–100%, respectively validated the applicability of the developed method for determination of theophylline content in tablet samples.

Strong coordination ability of sulfur with cobalt for facilitating scale-up synthesis of Co9S8 encapsulated S, N co-doped carbon as a trifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction

High activity trifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts, targeting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), are rationally designed by integrating the merits of both Co₉S₈ nanoparticles and carbons nanosheets. Herein, Co₉S₈ loaded with S, N co-doped carbon core-shell catalyst (Co₉S₈@SNC) was reasonably designed and synthesized by using the strong coordination effect between Co²⁺ and CS at the molecular level. The significant synergistic effect between the S, N co-doped carbon shell and Co₉S₈ core endows the catalyst with excellent catalytic performance for ORR, HER, and OER reactions. The carbon shell enhances the conductivity of the hybrid material, while the Co₉S₈ core provides the main catalytic active sites. More specifically, the half-wave potential for ORR is 0.846 mV, and the overpotential at 10 mA cm^-2 for OER and HER are 320 mV and 170 mV, respectively. To test its practical application, zinc-air battery assembled by Co₉S₈@SNC shows a high power density of 239 mW cm^-2, excellent rechargeability, and long cyclic stability. This work provides a promising and extensible method to in-situ synthesize core-shell metal sulfides loaded S, N co-doped carbon composites, which can be a promising candidate for electrocatalytic material in energy storage and conversion devices.

Insights on the mechanism of Fe doped ZnO for tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances tribo-catalytic degradation: The role of hydration layers at the interface

The control of interfacial microbial pollution is of great significance for water safety. Herein, the tribo-catalysis ability of zinc oxide (ZnO) has been investigated, which can realize the control of tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances (T-EPS) in water under dark environment. The DFT calculation proves the Fe doping introduces the impurity level and decreases the work function from 5.071 eV to 5.045 eV, improves the charge separation of ZnO, and eventually enhances the catalytic reaction efficiency. Characterizing the catalytic reaction process by three-dimensional fluorescence (3D EEM) and fluorescence regional integration (FRI) method, it is found that the T-EPS solution can be degraded 75.8% by Fe-ZnO in 12 min, while ZnO can only degrade 32.2%. Combining with high-resolution scanning probe microscope (HR-SPM) and attenuated total reflection method (ATR-FTIR), hydration layers consist with hydroxyl layer (∼0.23 nm) and water molecular layer (∼0.27 nm) are observed at the interface between Fe-ZnO and T-EPS solution, and terminal hydroxyl group (OH_t) is considered to be the active site for the generation of radicals. This study provides an idea for exploring the mechanism of tribo-catalytic reaction and shows its application prospect in the field of microbial inhibition in water.

Lanthanum ions decorated 2-dimensional g-C3N4 for ciprofloxacin photodegradation

The low band gap energy and high surface area two-dimensional materials allow it to tune its basic properties using surface decoration. Here, La³⁺ are decorated on two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride using a simple and easily scalable chemisorption process with an adsorption capacity of 657.32 mg g^-1. In the X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, the positive slope of the W-H plot elucidates the tensile strain generation (0.103) in La³⁺ ions decorated 2D-g-C₃N₄ (La³⁺-2D-g-C₃N₄). The high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) study and the higher I_D/I_G ratio (0.82) in the Raman spectroscopy study confirm the more defects intensification in La³⁺-2D-g-C₃N₄. The reduction in band gap energy for La³⁺-2D-g-C₃N₄ (from 2.83 eV to 2.21 eV) has shown a good correspondence with the band structures study as obtained from the DFT study. In the DFT study, the significant contributions of N atoms in charge transfer validate the N 1s findings from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study for La³⁺-2D-g-C₃N₄. La³⁺-2D-g-C₃N₄ shows the photodegradation efficiency (93%) of ciprofloxacin under UV irradiation, which is superior to pristine 2D-g-C₃N₄ (82%) as well as other g-C₃N₄ based nanocatalysts. Also, La³⁺ decoration results in enhancement (32.3%) in photodegradation kinetics rate. The degradation and kinetics studies in the presence of different scavengers ensure that the O₂- and OH^- radicals are mostly responsible for the ciprofloxacin photodegradation. The Liquid chromatographic-mass spectroscopy and the high-performance liquid chromatography studies confirm the photodegradation. The reusability of La³⁺-2D-g-C₃N₄ is tested up to the fifth cycle. FTIR and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy confirm the stability of the used photocatalyst.

Cadmium sulfide quantum dots/dodecahedral polyoxometalates/oxygen-doped mesoporous graphite carbon nitride with Z-scheme and Type-II as tandem heterojunctions for boosting visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance

It is known that fabrication of tandem heterojunctions between different types of heterojunctions can promote the charge separation. Herein, novel cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs)/dodecahedral phosphotungstic acid potassium K₃PW₁₂O₄₀ (KPW)/oxygen-doped mesoporous graphite carbon nitride (meso-g-C₃N₄) nanosheets tandem heterojunctions are prepared by the hydrothermal method combined with direct template calcination and in-situ chemical sedimentation strategy. The results show that tandem heterojunctions formed by the Z-Scheme heterojunction between CdS QDs and KPW and the type-II heterojunction between CdS QDs and meso-g-C₃N₄ can extend the optical response into visible light region. Importantly, under visible light irradiation, photocatalytic hydrogen production rate and photocatalytic Cr⁶⁺ removal rate over CdS/KPW/meso-g-C₃N₄ is higher than that of KPW and CdS/KPW. This remarkable photocatalytic performance is due to the effective charge separation and transfer of the special tandem heterojunction structure. This novel tandem heterojunction will offer new insights for fabricating other high-performance photocatalytic systems.

A high-performance rechargeable Mg2+/Li+ hybrid battery using CNT@TiO2 nanocables as the cathode

Porous CNT@TiO₂ nanocables are prepared via an impregnation method combined with calcination, which not only display the illusive capacity of 233.5 mAh g^-1 but also possess outstanding rate performance (144.9 mAh g^-1 at 500 mA g^-1). Compared with TiO₂ nanoparticles and nanotubes, CNT@TiO₂ exhibits the excellent electrochemical performance on account of the unique coaxial nanocable feature (short ion diffusion path, large contact surface area, supernal conductivity, and favorable structure stability), which simultaneously overcomes the aggregation of TiO₂ particles and the collapse of TiO₂ nanotubes. Importantly, there are no significant changes in the morphology and phase after long cycling, meaning that CNT@TiO₂ has a highly structural stability and reversibility. Therefore, CNT@TiO₂ can be applied as a promising cathode material for Mg²⁺/Li⁺ hybrid batteries.

One-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks embedded with zinc-cobalt nanoparticles for efficient overall water splitting

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived catalysts exhibit highly-efficient hydrogen or oxygen evolution performance on water splitting. However, it is an urgent problem to construct bifunctional electrocatalysts for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution performance. Herein, we adopted Ag nanowires as templates to prepare one-dimensional Ag nanowire@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursors (1D AgNW@ZIF-8@ZIF-67). Through pyrolysis, AgNW@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursors transformed into nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks (NCF) embedded with zinc-cobalt (ZnCo) nanoparticles on the surface of Ag NWs (denoted as Ag@ZnCo/NCF nanohybrids). The nanohybrids were consisted of Ag NWs with good conductivity and ZnCo/NCF nanohybrids with rich accessible active sites. Benefiting from their large specific surface area, accessible active sites and synergistic effect among components, Ag@ZnCo/NCF nanohybrids exhibit lower overpotentials of 139 mV and 279 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, severally. Compared with other catalysts, Ag@ZnCo/NCF nanohybrids possess smaller Tafel slope, indicating their higher catalytic activity. This work provides a new perspective for designing low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.
