Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of singing as an intervention for aging voice. METHOD Quantitative studies of interventions for older adults with any medical condition that involves singing as training were reviewed, measured by respiration, phonation, and posture, which are the physical functions related to the aging voice. English and Chinese studies published until April 2024 were searched using 31 electronic databases, and seven studies were included. The included articles were assessed according to the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations rubric. RESULTS Seven studies were included. These studies reported outcome measures that were related to respiratory functions only. For the intervention effect, statistically significant improvements were observed in five of the included studies, among which three studies had large effect sizes. The overall level of evidence of the included studies was not high, with three studies having moderate levels and the rest having lower levels. The intervention activities included trainings other than singing. These non-singing training items may have caused co-intervention bias in the study results. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review suggests that singing as an intervention for older adults with respiratory and cognitive problems could improve respiration and respiratory-phonatory control. However, none of the included studies covers the other two of the physical functions related to aging voice (phonatory and postural functions). The overall level of evidence of the included studies was not high either. There is a need for more research evidence in singing-based intervention specifically for patient with aging voice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of voice disorders for people aged >65 years is four times higher than for the population at large. The most common cause of dysphonia in this group is presbyphonia, the preferred first-line treatment for which is voice therapy with a speech-language pathologist. This systematic review seeks to identify how voice therapy affects multidimensional voice outcomes in people with presbyphonia. METHODS A systematic search of CINAHL, Embase, Emcare, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar was conducted in March 2023. Comparative and noncomparative studies of voice therapy in participants aged >50 years with presbyphonia were considered for inclusion. No limitations were placed on date or language of publication. Study quality and risk of bias were assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool and the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies. Subgroup analysis was used to compare studies based on participant sex, intervention duration, study design, and intervention content. Interventions were specified using the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) employing a consensus methodology among reviewers. The results were synthesized utilizing meta-analysis when outcomes were adequately specified and narrative analysis when they were not. RESULTS Twenty-three studies were included with 1050 subjects (mean age: 72.5 ± 8.6 years; 51% female). The most reported intervention was vocal function exercises. Per the RTSS, 14 interventions employed a predominantly Organ Functions approach, and the 14 remaining interventions employed a Skills & Habits approach. Meta-analysis confirmed posttherapy improvement in patient-related outcome measures of 0.93 standard mean difference (P < 0.00001, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.70-1.17); studies with predominantly males and with longer treatment periods were associated with larger improvements, while randomized controlled trials reported more modest improvements. Meta-analysis also identified a mean posttherapy increase in maximum phonation time (MPT) of 5.37 seconds (P < 0.00001, 95% CI: 3.52-7.22). Treatments with an Organ Functions focus resulted in greater gains in MPT than those with a Skills & Habits focus (7.52 seconds versus 2.90 seconds). Finally, meta-analysis identified reductions in acoustic perturbation measures (jitter: 0.62%, P < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.26%-0.97%; shimmer 1.05%, P < 0.00001, 95% CI: 0.67%-1.44%). Narrative synthesis further identified improvement in auditory-perceptual voice quality in all active treatment groups as well as improved glottal function in most studies that reported this. CONCLUSIONS Despite the uncertainty around internal validity introduced by the inclusion of a wide range of study designs, there is convincing evidence that voice therapy for presbyphonia results in significant improvement in patient-reported, aerodynamic, acoustic, and expert-rated voice outcomes. Treatments with an Organ Functions focus may better address the underlying physiological deficits of presbyphonia, although future comparative studies with multidimensional voice assessment are warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE To verify the association between sociodemographic factors, vocal behavior, morbidities, and self-perception of voice, hearing, and general health in older women with voice disorders. METHODS The sample had 95 older women aged 60 to 84 years (mean of 69,5). They were interviewed with a structured questionnaire on sociodemographic aspects, health, and vocal behavior. The Screening Protocol for Voice Disorders in Older Adults (RAVI) was used to identify the presence of voice disorders. RESULTS Participants who had finished high school and were retired predominated. The number of older women with voice disorders according to RAVI was 46.3%. Physical sensations such as dry throat, throat clearing, and itchy throat were the most common complaints. The group of older women with voice disorders had worse self-perception of voice quality, hearing, and general health and a higher frequency of upper airway infections than those without voice disorders (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION The vocal self-assessment measured with RAVI was statistically associated with self-perception of voice quality, hearing, general health, sore throat, sinusitis, and respiratory allergies.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, older people had to remain isolated, which could cause not only anxiety and depression but also voice and communication problems and lifestyle, demographic, and socioeconomic changes. This study aimed to analyze the influence of anxiety and depression and other associated factors on the voice handicap of active older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional and analytical research approached older people enrolled at a reference health care unit for this age group in Recife. Demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle data were surveyed with interviews. Mental health measures were obtained with the Self-Reporting Questionnaire, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Geriatric Depression Scale. Voice handicap was assessed with the Voice Handicap Index. Analyses were performed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The study compared older people with lesser and greater voice handicaps, using the chi-square and Wald tests. The association was assessed according to the binary and multivariate logistic regression model. Altogether, 91 older people with a mean age of 69 years participated in the research, most of whom (54.9%) did not have voice handicaps. Trait anxiety (P = 0.031) and age (P = 0.036) were associated with voice handicaps. Active older adults with higher trait anxiety were five times as likely to have voice handicaps (odds ratio = 5.151) as those with low trait anxiety. Moreover, the ones with more advanced age were 10% more likely to have voice handicaps (odds ratio = 1.100) than younger participants. It is concluded that, during the pandemic, voice handicap in active older people was associated with trait anxiety and age.

Abstract
PURPOSE Voice disorders significantly impair the ability to communicate effectively and reduce the quality of life in older adults; however, its prevalence has not been well established. The aim of our research was to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of voice disorders among the older population. METHOD Five medical databases were systematically searched for studies that reported the prevalence of voice disorders in older adults. The overall prevalence was exhibited in proportions and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) utilizing random-effects models. Heterogeneity was measured using I 2 statistics. RESULTS Of 930 articles screened, 13 fulfilled the eligibility criteria, including 10 studies in community-based settings and three in institutionalized settings. An overall prevalence of voice disorders in older adults was estimated to be 18.79% (95% CI [16.34, 21.37], I 2 = 96%). Subgroup analysis showed a prevalence of 33.03% (95% CI [26.85, 39.51], I 2 = 35%) in institutionalized older adults, which was significantly higher than that in the community-based older adults with 15.2% (95% CI [12.65, 17.92], I 2 = 92%). Some factors that influenced the reported prevalence were identified, including types of survey, the definition of voice disorders, sampling methods, and the mean age of the population among included studies. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of voice disorders in the older population depends on various factors but is relatively common in older adults. The findings of this study accentuate the necessity for researchers to standardize the protocol for reporting geriatric dysphonia as well as for older adults to express their voice-related problems so that they will receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to identify the frequency of swallowing disorders and the associated factors in older adults living in nursing homes. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of 73 older adults (≥ 60 years; mean age = 80 ± 7.49 years; female = 82.2%) living in five non-profit Brazilian nursing homes. Demographic and clinical data were collected. The frequency of swallowing disorders was determined by the Volume-Viscosity Swallow Test (VVS-T). Covariables with a p-value less than 0.20 according to Pearson's chi-square test or Fisher's exact test were included in the multiple logistic regression analysis model. The level of significance was 5%. RESULTS The frequency of swallowing disorders was 63%. The multiple logistic regression model revealed that the chance of an older adult living in a nursing home presenting with swallowing disorders increased by 8% with each 1-year increase in age. Decreases in oral intake level improved the chance of a negative result in the VVS-T by approximately four times, and an individual with a FOIS level below seven was almost 11 times more likely to have a swallowing disorder. CONCLUSION The frequency of swallowing disorders in older adults living in nursing homes is high and is associated with age and oral intake. The management care team should be aware of the early detection of these conditions to prevent complications of oropharyngeal dysphagia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Voice disorders are a worldwide problem impacting human health, particularly for occupational voice users. Avoidance of surface dehydration is commonly prescribed as a protective factor against the development of dysphonia. The available literature inconclusively supports this practice and a biological mechanism for how surface dehydration of the laryngeal tissue affects voice has not been described. In this study, we used an in vivo male New Zealand white rabbit model to elucidate biological changes based on gene expression within the vocal folds from surface dehydration. Surface dehydration was induced by exposure to low humidity air (18.6% + 4.3%) for 8 h. Exposure to moderate humidity (43.0% + 4.3%) served as the control condition. Ilumina-based RNA sequencing was performed and used for transcriptome analysis with validation by RT-qPCR. RESULTS There were 103 statistically significant differentially expressed genes identified through Cuffdiff with 61 genes meeting significance by both false discovery rate and fold change. Functional annotation enrichment and predicted protein interaction mapping showed enrichment of various loci, including cellular stress and inflammatory response, ciliary function, and keratinocyte development. Eight genes were selected for RT-qPCR validation. Matrix metalloproteinase 12 (MMP12) and macrophage cationic peptide 1 (MCP1) were significantly upregulated and an epithelial chloride channel protein (ECCP) was significantly downregulated after surface dehydration by RNA-Seq and RT-qPCR. Suprabasin (SPBN) and zinc activated cationic channel (ZACN) were marginally, but non-significantly down- and upregulated as evidenced by RT-qPCR, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The data together support the notion that surface dehydration induces physiological changes in the vocal folds and justifies targeted analysis to further explore the underlying biology of compensatory fluid/ion flux and inflammatory mediators in response to airway surface dehydration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of self-perceived voice problems and voice-related quality of life in a nontreatment seeking older population in Hong Kong. STUDY DESIGN Prospective, cross-sectional survey. METHODS One hundred and one older individuals aged 65 years or above were recruited from senior citizen community centers in Hong Kong. Each participant received a face-to-face interview with the researcher. The participants were asked to report the presence of voice problems and the voice symptoms that they experienced. They were also asked to complete the Cantonese version of the Voice Handicap Index to ascertain their voice-related quality of life. RESULTS Over one-fourth (27.7%) of participants reported having current voice problems. Perceived voice problems were found to pose significant negative impacts on the older individuals' voice-related quality of life. The prevalence of voice problems and extent of impacts of voice-related quality of life were similar across the young-old, old-old, and the oldest-old groups of participants. CONCLUSION The results suggest that voice problems are common in the older population and should not be underestimated. The study urges the need to allocate more resources to provide voice-related services from the young-old group for promoting positive aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with voice disorders (VDs) in Brazilian community-dwelling older adults. STUDY DESIGN This is a cross-sectional study. METHODS The sample comprised 463 older adults (60 years or more) of both sexes living in a Brazilian northeastern city. Variables were related to socioeconomic and demographic profile, lifestyle, and general health conditions, in addition to the validated "Screening for Voice Disorders in Older Adults" (RAVI) questionnaire. A bivariate analysis was performed using the Pearson chi-square test or the Fisher exact test, and the magnitude of the association was the prevalence ratio (PR). Poisson regression model was performed, considering only the variables with a critical value of P < 0.20. The significance level was 5%. RESULTS There was a prevalence of women (60.9%), and the average age of participants was 70 (±7.74) years. The prevalence of VDs was 51.4% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 46.8-55.9). The most common symptoms were throat sensation of phlegm (46.9%) and dry throat (46.7%), both related to physical sensations of laryngeal discomfort. Multivariate analysis indicated that the prevalence of VDs was independently associated with hyposalivation (PR = 2.28, 95% CI = 1.80-2.88), smoking (PR = 2.04, 95% CI = 1.65-2.52), self-reported hearing loss (PR = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.28-1.78), and not seeking a physician or other health professional care for VDs (PR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.60-0.88). CONCLUSION VDs are prevalent among Brazilian community-dwelling older adults and are associated with variables related to general health and lifestyle.

Abstract
Voice disorders are affecting everyday life in many levels, and their prevalence has been studied extensively in certain and general populations. Notably, several factors have a cohesive influence on voice disorders and voice characteristics. Several studies report that health and environmental and psychological etiologies can serve as risk factors for voice disorders. Many diagnostic protocols, in the literature, evaluate voice and its parameters leading to direct or indirect treatment intervention. This study was designed to examine the effect of tango on adult acoustic voice parameters. Fifty-two adults (26 male and 26 female) were recruited and divided into four subgroups (male dancers, female dancers, male nondancers, and female nondancers). The participants were asked to answer two questionnaires (Voice Handicap Index and Voice Evaluation Form), and their voices were recorded before and after the tango dance session. Moreover, water consumption was investigated. The study's results indicated that the voices' acoustic characteristics were different between tango dancers and the control group. The beneficial results are far from prominent as they prove that tango dance can serve stand-alone as voice therapy without the need for hydration. Also, more research is imperative to be conducted on a longitudinal basis to obtain a more accurate result on the required time for the proposed therapy.
