Interpretable tourism demand forecasting with temporal fusion transformers amid COVID-19

An innovative ADE-TFT interpretable tourism demand forecasting model was proposed to address the issue of the insufficient interpretability of existing tourism demand forecasting. This model effectively optimizes the parameters of the Temporal Fusion Transformer (TFT) using an adaptive differential evolution algorithm (ADE). TFT is a brand-new attention-based deep learning model that excels in prediction research by fusing high-performance prediction with time-dynamic interpretable analysis. The TFT model can produce explicable predictions of tourism demand, including attention analysis of time steps and the ranking of input factors' relevance. While doing so, this study adds something unique to the literature on tourism by using historical tourism volume, monthly new confirmed cases of travel destinations, and big data from travel forums and search engines to increase the precision of forecasting tourist volume during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mood of travelers and the many subjects they spoke about throughout off-season and peak travel periods were examined using a convolutional neural network model. In addition, a novel technique for choosing keywords from Google Trends was suggested. In other words, the Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic model was used to categorize the major travel-related subjects of forum postings, after which the most relevant search terms for each topic were determined. According to the findings, it is possible to estimate tourism demand during the COVID-19 pandemic by combining quantitative and emotion-based characteristics.

Modelling monthly influenza cases in Malaysia

The increasing trend in the number new cases of influenza every year as reported by WHO is concerning, especially in Malaysia. To date, there is no local research under healthcare sector that implements the time series forecasting methods to predict future disease outbreak in Malaysia, specifically influenza. Addressing the problem could increase awareness of the disease and could help healthcare workers to be more prepared in preventing the widespread of the disease. This paper intends to perform a hybrid ARIMA-SVR approach in forecasting monthly influenza cases in Malaysia. Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model (using Box-Jenkins method) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) model were used to capture the linear and nonlinear components in the monthly influenza cases, respectively. It was forecasted that the performance of the hybrid model would improve. The data from World Health Organization (WHO) websites consisting of weekly Influenza Serology A cases in Malaysia from the year 2006 until 2019 have been used for this study. The data were recategorized into monthly data. The findings of the study showed that the monthly influenza cases could be efficiently forecasted using three comparator models as all models outperformed the benchmark model (Naïve model). However, SVR with linear kernel produced the lowest values of RMSE and MAE for the test dataset suggesting the best performance out of the other comparators. This suggested that SVR has the potential to produce more consistent results in forecasting future values when compared with ARIMA and the ARIMA-SVR hybrid model.

A decomposition-ensemble approach for tourism forecasting

With the frequent occurrence of irregular events in recent years, the tourism industry in some areas, such as Hong Kong, has suffered great volatility. To enhance the predictive accuracy of tourism demand forecasting, a decomposition-ensemble approach is developed based on the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise, data characteristic analysis, and the Elman's neural network model. Using Hong Kong tourism demand as an empirical case, this study firstly investigates how data characteristic analysis is used in a decomposition-ensemble approach. The empirical results show that the proposed model outperforms other models in both point and interval forecasts for different prediction horizons, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed approach for forecasting tourism demand, especially for time series with complexity.

Emergency patient flow forecasting in the radiology department

The accurate forecast of radiology emergency patient flow is of great importance to optimize appointment scheduling decisions. This study used a multi-model approach to forecast daily radiology emergency patient flow with consideration of different patient sources. We constructed six linear and nonlinear models by considering the lag effects and corresponding time factors. The autoregressive integrated moving average and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) were selected from the category of linear models, whereas linear-and-radial support vector regression models, random forests and adaptive boosting were chosen from the category of nonlinear models. The models were applied to 4-year daily emergency visits data in the radiology department of West China Hospital in Chengdu, China. The mean absolute percentage error of six models ranged from 8.56 to 9.36 percent for emergency department patients, whereas it varied from 10.90 to 14.39 percent for ward patients. The best-performing model for total radiology visits was Lasso, which yielded a mean absolute percentage error of 7.06 percent. The arrival patterns of emergency department and total radiology emergency patient flows could be modeled by linear processes. By contrast, the nonlinear model performed best for ward patient flow. These findings will benefit hospital managers in managing efficient patient flow, thus improving service quality and increasing patient satisfaction.

Support Vector Regression Integrated with Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm for River Flow Forecasting in Lake Urmia Basin

Advancement in river flow prediction systems can greatly empower the operational river management to make better decisions, practices, and policies. Machine learning methods recently have shown promising results in building accurate models for river flow prediction. This paper aims to identify models with higher accuracy, robustness, and generalization ability by inspecting the accuracy of a number of machine learning models. The proposed models for river flow include support vector regression (SVR), a hybrid of SVR with a fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) (so-called FOASVR), and an M5 model tree (M5). Additionally, the influence of periodicity (π) on the forecasting enactment was examined. To assess the performance of the proposed models, different statistical meters were implemented, including root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), correlation coefficient (R), and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). Results showed that the FOASVR with RMSE (4.36 and 6.33 m3/s), MAE (2.40 and 3.71 m3/s) and R (0.82 and 0.81) values had the best performance in forecasting river flows at Babarud and Vaniar stations, respectively. Also, regarding BIC parameters, Qt−1 and π were selected as parsimonious inputs for predicting river flow one month ahead. Overall findings indicated that, although both the FOASVR and M5 predicted the river flows in suitable accordance with observed river flows, the performance of the FOASVR was moderately better than the M5 and periodicity noticeably increased the performance of the models; consequently, FOASVR can be suggested as the most accurate method for forecasting river flows.

Mixed Kernel Function Support Vector Regression with Genetic Algorithm for Forecasting Dissolved Gas Content in Power Transformers

Forecasting dissolved gas content in power transformers plays a significant role in detecting incipient faults and maintaining the safety of the power system. Though various forecasting models have been developed, there is still room to further improve prediction performance. In this paper, a new forecasting model is proposed by combining mixed kernel function-based support vector regression (MKF-SVR) and genetic algorithm (GA). First, forecasting performance of SVR models constructed with a single kernel are compared, and then Gaussian kernel and polynomial kernel are retained due to better learning and prediction ability. Next, a mixed kernel, which integrates a Gaussian kernel with a polynomial kernel, is used to establish a SVR-based forecasting model. Genetic algorithm (GA) and leave-one-out cross validation are employed to determine the free parameters of MKF-SVR, while mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and squared correlation coefficient (r2) are applied to assess the quality of the parameters. The proposed model is implemented on a practical dissolved gas dataset and promising results are obtained. Finally, the forecasting performance of the proposed model is compared with three other approaches, including RBFNN, GRNN and GM. The experimental and comparison results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms other popular models in terms of forecasting accuracy and fitting capability.
