Dry bulk cargo shipping - An overlooked threat to the marine environment?

Evaluation of the effective factors of unloading and loading goods in ports and the impact on the environment using the MCDM method

Today, the impact of transportation on sustainable development is undeniable. Maritime transport, as one of the important pillars of this industry and due to its advantages such as low cost and large volume of freight, plays a key role in the development of foreign trade. This study uses TOPSIS and DEMATLE methods to evaluate the factors affecting the unloading and loading of goods on the port's environment. The results of TOPSIS method on the main criteria showed that the atmospheric factors' criterion had the highest weight and the port criterion (includes activities that occur in the port) had the lowest weight. In the sub-criteria section, the suitable visibility of the crane operator had the highest rank and the sub-criterion of storage capacity and its (storage) area obtained the lowest rank. Also, the results of DEMATEL method on the cause-and-effect relationship of sub-criteria of unloading and loading of goods showed that coastal transport equipment, unloading and loading equipment, and safety required for unloading goods are influenced higher than other sub-criteria and also the impact of safety required for unloading goods, proper visibility of the crane operator, and the ability of unloading equipment is greater than other sub-criteria. The results of cause-and-effect relationship for sub-criteria of the port environment showed that the impact of sewage, sanitary effluents from the port and ships, and hazardous waste is higher than other sub-criteria and also the impact of petroleum hydrocarbons, sediments, and toxic substances is higher than other sub-criteria.

Effects of coal microparticles on marine organisms: A review

Coal dust is a source of pollution not only for atmospheric air but also for the marine environment. In places of storage and handling of coal near water bodies, visible pollution of the water area can be observed. Coal, despite its natural origin, can be referred to as anthropogenic sources of pollution. If coal microparticles enter the marine environment, it may cause both physical and toxic effects on organisms. The purpose of this review is to assess the stage of knowledge of the impact of coal particles on marine organisms, to identify the main factors affecting them, and to define advanced research directions. The results presented in the review have shown that coal dust in seawater is generally not an inert substance for marine organisms, and there is a need for further study of the impact of coal dust particles on marine ecosystems.

Vertical Distribution of Particulates within the Near-Surface Layer of Dry Bulk Port and Influence Mechanism: A Case Study in China

Knowing the vertical distribution of ambient particulate matter (PM) will help port authorities choose the optimal dust-suppression measures to reduce PM concentrations. In this study, we used an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to assess the vertical distribution (0–120 m altitude) of PM in a dry bulk port along the Yangtze River, China. Total suspended particulates (TSP), PM10, and PM2.5 concentrations at different altitudes were measured at seven sites representing different cargo-handling sites and a background site. Variations in results across sites make it not suitable to characterize the vertical distribution of PM concentration at this port using simple representative distributions. Bulk cargo particle size, fog cannon use, and porous fence all affected the vertical distribution of TSP concentrations but had only minor impacts on PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations. Optimizing porous fence layout according to weather conditions and cargo demand at port have the most potential for mitigating PM pollution related to port operation. As ground-based stations cannot fully measure vertical PM distributions, our methods and results represent an advance in assessing the impact of port activities on air quality and can be used to determine optimal dust-suppression measures for dry bulk ports.

A review on the environmental impacts of shipping on aquatic and nearshore ecosystems

There are several environmental and ecological effects of shipping. However, these are rarely assessed in total in the scientific literature. Thus, the aim of this study was to summarize the different impacts of water-based transport on aquatic and nearshore ecosystems and to identify knowledge gaps and areas for future research. The review identified several environmental and ecological consequences within the main impact categories of water discharges, physical impacts, and air emissions. However, although quantitative data on these consequences are generally scarce the shipping contribution to acidification by SO_x- and NO_x-emissions has been quantified to some extent. There are several knowledge gaps regarding the ecological consequences of, for example, the increasing amount of chemicals transported on water, the spread of non-indigenous species coupled with climate change, and physical impacts such as shipping noise and artificial light. The whole plethora of environmental consequences, as well as potential synergistic effects, should be seriously considered in transport planning.

The Impact of Slumping Oil Price on the Situation of Tanker Shipping along the Maritime Silk Road

Nearly 70% of the world’s maritime crude oil transportation relies on the Maritime Silk Road (MSR). In order to deeply explore the impact of slumping oil price on the shipping situation of tanker along the MSR, this paper establishes the relationship between monthly ship and oil price through Autoregressive Distributed Lag model. Distributions of cargo flow before and after the oil price slumped are compared to explore the changing law of tanker shipping situation. The study finds: (1) The correlation between the cargo flow situation of the tanker seaborne export and oil price, where the export cargo flow correlation is stronger than that of the import cargo flow. (2) The MSR tanker shipping situation is lagging (3 months) behind the impact of oil price. The lag effect in Europe, North Asia and East Asia is strong while that in Southeast Asia and South Asia is weak. (3) After the oil price slumped, the tanker shipping cargo flow increased less during the crude oil export stage, and the increase in the crude oil shipping trade after the transfer period was larger. The research results can provide a scientific basis for improving the decision-making ability of the crude oil shipping market and formulating maritime operations management measures.
