Exploring avian exposure to parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): Using the common eider Somateria mollissima in a global context

Compared to other organic contaminants, birds are rarely studied for their exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mainly due to their effective metabolization of parent PAHs. However, as some studies suggest, exposure to PAHs may result in adverse health effects including decreased survival, especially following oil spills. In the present study, we analyzed samples from a sea duck, the common eider Somateria mollissima including feathers, preen oil, blood, liver and bile, to evaluate whether non- lethally collected samples could be reliably used for avian biomonitoring strategies. Phenanthrene was the only individual PAH detected across sample types, with the highest concentration found in preen gland and the lowest in blood. Significant differences in concentrations were observed between bile vs preen gland and liver vs preen gland, while for most compounds neither blood nor feathers showed detectable levels of parent PAHs. Therefore, the utility of those sample types for PAH exposure assessment may be limited and should be interpreted with caution, moreover as several physiological factors may affect them. Additionally, we also provide a comparison with the available literature to review current avian PAH exposure assessment and outline future research focused needs.

Total body burden of neurotoxicant Hg in Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) - Considerations of distribution and human risk assessment

The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is considered one of the 100 most invasive alien species in the world. Despite this, its role in ecosystems, among others, in the trophodynamics of pollutants including mercury, is still not fully understood. Becoming an increasingly important and widespread element of the trophic chain in new areas arouses interest from humans as consumers. Hence it is important to determine the level of contaminants (including Hg) in alien species. In the present study, great attention was paid separately to the soft tissues and hard tissues of the exoskeleton, which may play an important role in the detoxification of the crab's body from toxic Hg. The study was conducted on crabs collected in 2011-2021 in the Vistula Lagoon. Concentrations of total mercury and its forms were carried out using a Direct Mercury Analyzer, DMA-80 (Milestone, Italy). The present study showed that mercury accumulation of the crab's body largely occurred through the gills, followed by the oral route. The distribution of Hg in the crab's organs was related to the trophic origin of the mercury, while halide-bound mercury and semilabile forms from the respiration (filtration) process were redistributed into the crab's exoskeleton. Male crabs, compared to females, had a higher Hg burden on internal organs such as their hepatopancreas and gonads. Hg concentration in hard tissues was closely related to the type of mineralization of the carapace. The elimination of Hg from the muscles and from the hepatopancreas into the carapace was one of the important detoxification processes of the crab's body. Thus, moulting crabs effectively remove Hg protecting its body from the neurotoxin. As a result, a smaller Hg load is biomagnified, making the crab's muscle tissue fit for human consumption. The observed decrease in Hg concentrations from 2011 to 2021, as well as the spatial variability of Hg in the crab's muscles, testify that the crab can serve as a biomonitor for ecosystem changes.

Factors determining bioaccumulation of neurotoxicant Hg in the zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha): Influence of biometric parameters, sex and storage of shell

One of benthic organisms exposed to contact with mercury in the southern Baltic is alien species of clam: Dreissena polymorpha. As this organism is increasingly dynamic in various regions of the world including the southern Baltic region, it is reasonable to ask whether it tolerates elevated concentrations of xenobiotics? Does it effectively eliminate Hg? The study determined the effects of biometric parameters and water temperature on the rate of accumulation and efficiency of eliminating Hg from body. Investigations focused on the shell which represents poorly-recognized role in the process of Hg distribution in clams. The results showed that especially during warm season, clams effectively reduced the levels of Hg in their body by the biodilution of Hg and reproduction. Important factor influencing detoxification was Hg transfer from the soft tissue to the shell. This protects the soft tissue against the toxic effect of Hg.

Comparison of prenatal and postnatal exposure to endocrine active phenol derivatives in mammals - Humans and Baltic grey seals

Bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP), and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) are characterised by their endocrine active properties. Their negative effects on the development of the body are doubly important in the reproduction process. The goal was to compare the maternal transfer of phenol derivatives in humans and seals and identify factors that may affect the load of phenol derivatives entering the mother's body, which translates into a risk to the offspring. Phenol derivatives were determined using HPLC-FLD. It was shown that higher concentrations of phenol derivatives in blood or milk were detected in humans (mothers and newborns) compared to concentrations in Baltic seals. This was influenced by external exposure factors, i.e., leaching of phenol derivatives from food packaging or dermal contact. The authors conclude that milk is the main component in the maternal transfer of BPA to the next generation in humans, while blood is a carrier of alkylphenols, particularly 4-tert-octylphenol.

Is the inhalation influence on the level of mercury and PAHs in the lungs of the baltic grey seal (Halichoerus grypusgrypus)?

For many decades, mercury (Hg) has been recognized as one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants that negatively affects the ecosystem, including human health. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hydrophobic, toxic and potentially carcinogenic compounds. The process of respiration in addition to dietary intake is a significant source of these compounds to the human or marine mammalian body. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the sources of PAHs and labile forms of mercury in the lungs of dead seals found in the southern Baltic Sea. Of the PAHs: pyrene, fluoranthene and chrysene showed the highest concentrations. Considering the content of individual Hg fractions, the highest percentage was characterized by Hg _{labile 1b} (related to organic matter). In a few specimens, deviations from the trend described above were observed: a higher proportion of Hg _{labile 1a} (mainly halide-bound forms of mercury than the mean value which may indicate their origin from aerosols). Hg concentrations increased with seal age due to bioaccumulation and biomagnification of Hg from food; therefore, adsorption of atmospheric mercury on alveoli is probably of decreasing importance with seal age. Ratios obtained: FLA/PYR <1; B(a)A/CHR <1; FLA/(PYR + FLA) < 0.4 indicate a petrogenic source. In contrast, high correlations of B(a)A, FLA and PYR and CHR with Hg suggest a common source of PAHs and mercury - from food. Conversely, the presence of pyrogenic (combustion-derived) benzo(a)pyrene in the lungs of these mammals could indicate a respiratory route of entry. Mercury and PAHs in the lungs of the seals studied were mainly of trophic origin, but the results presented here make the hypothesis of an airborne influx of Hg and PAHs into the lungs from marine mammals plausible. This is of particular importance in juveniles (pups), who, at the initial stage of life, spend time on land and do not obtain food on their own.

Different pathways of accumulation and elimination of neurotoxicant Hg and its forms in the clam Atlantic rangia (Rangia cuneata)

Mercury (Hg) is one of the most hazardous environmental pollutants, negatively affecting the ecosystem. The pathways of Hg elimination are well recognized in organisms from higher trophic levels compared to invertebrates such as clams. The aim of this study was to identify pathways of Hg accumulation in an alien species clams: Rangia cuneata, which represented an unrecognized source of Hg into the trophic chain of the southern Baltic Sea. An important aspect of this study was to determine Hg detoxification processes based on physiological state and biometric parameters of the atlatntic rangia. Special consideration was given to the role of shell in this process and the form of Hg in which it occurred. The study was also considered in terms of geographical changes in the Hg concentration in clams and the factors involved. Sex did not determine the concentration of Hg and its fraction in clams soft tissue and shell. Clams detoxified xenobiotic effectively in summer when their metabolism was accelerated. As a result, clams grew faster in warmer water than they accumulated Hg. In addition, this process was intensified by their reproduction. The mass of accumulated mercury was higher in the shell mass than in the body mass in summer. Transfer of Hg from the body to the shell depended on the forms Hg, mostly HgS. Geographical changes in the mercury concentration in clams was related to the form of Hg in the sediment. In areas where were more fines sediment fraction and organic matter accumulated in the sediment, mercury was present in a less bioavailable form, which caused that clams had lower Hg concentrations in their body. With assumption that in the future, due to its increasingly frequent occurrence, atlatntic rangia will become more common component of fish diet, a smaller load of toxic mercury will be introduced to the marine trophic chain.

Elimination of endocrine disrupting phenolic compounds via feathers and claws in seabirds moulting in the Baltic and Russian Arctic

This paper investigates the effectiveness of phenol derivatives removal from bird organisms via claws and remiges, and performs a preliminary assessment of the usefulness of these epidermal products for environmental biomonitoring and estimating bird exposure levels. Concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA) and alkylphenols: 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) were determined in claws and remiges of long-tailed ducks Clangula hyemalis and razorbills Alca torda, obtained during a by-catch in the winter period (2014-2016) in the Southern Baltic region. For razorbills, the Baltic is a permanent habitat, while long-tailed ducks are migratory and stay in the Southern Baltic only during the non-breeding season. Their remiges are replaced in the Arctic seas of Siberia. The removal of phenol derivatives, depending on the compound and the epidermal product, ranges from 12 % to 34 %. Among these compounds, in both bird species, the highest degree of elimination was observed for 4-NP in remiges (<0.1-656.0 ng^.g^-1 dw) as well as claws (<0.1-338.6 ng^.g^-1 dw). On the other hand, the least removed compound in both the long-tailed duck and the razorbill was 4-t-OP. The removal of phenol derivatives from claws in both bird species was at the same level. However, 4-NP concentrations were found to be statistically significantly higher in razorbill remiges compared to those of the long-tailed duck (p < 0.05). Comparison of concentrations in the remiges of the long-tailed duck and the razorbill, moulted in two different environments with different levels of pollution and distances from sources, indicated that the Baltic Sea is approximately 3 times more polluted with 4-NP than the marine areas of the Russian Arctic. This demonstrates the potential for the use of 4-NP and remiges as indicators of environmental pollution with phenol derivatives.

Occurrence and tissue distribution of alkylphenols (APs) in selected waterbirds from the Southern Baltic

The aim of the present study was to determine the concentrations of nonylphenols (NPs) and 4-t-octylphenol (4tOP) in the muscles, liver, and kidneys of selected waterbird species. Three species with different feeding habits were selected, i.e., greater scaup (Aythya marila), great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus), and great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) to investigate the potential effects of diet on the level of contaminants tested. The determination and quantification of analytes were performed using gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS). The highest NP concentrations were noted in the kidneys of greater scaups and great crested grebes (208.3 and 160.8 μg kg^-1 ww, resp.), which were six to fourteen-fold higher than those in the muscles (15.0 and 25.6 μg kg^-1 ww, resp.) and livers (22.9 and 13.8 μg kg^-1 ww, resp.) of these species. In greater scaups, the mean concentration of NPs in the livers was lower than in the muscles, while in great crested grebes, it was the opposite and higher concentrations were noted in the muscles. The mean concentrations of NPs in the muscles and livers of great cormorants were at similarly low levels (12.5 and 9.7 μg kg^-1 ww, resp.). The concentrations of 4tOP in all samples were low, ranging from <LOQ to 0.29 μg kg^-1 ww. The results of our study indicated that sex and diet did not affect the NP tissue concentrations in different waterbird species, but the phenological period (migration vs breeding) might influence the contamination levels in the kidneys.

Concentrations of bisphenol a (BPA) in fresh pork loin meat under standard stock-farming conditions and after oral exposure - A preliminary study

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a substance commonly used in the production of plastics. It may be leached from plastics, penetrate to food and has multidirectional negative effects on living organisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate BPA levels in fresh pork meat collected immediately after the death of animals kept in standard stock-farming conditions, as well as from animals receiving various oral doses of BPA (0.05 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)/day and 0.5 mg/kg b. w./day). In animals kept in standard conditions, the average concentration of BPA in loin meat amounted to 37.03 ± 6.18 ng/g dry weight (d.w.). In animals receiving lower and higher doses of BPA, this value achieved 47.44 ± 4.39 ng/g d. w. and 214.30 ± 66.73 ng/g d. w, respectively. The results show that pork meat may be a source of BPA in human food and the presence of BPA in the meat may result from the exposure of animals over their lifetime. This observation shows that the elimination of BPA from the production of items used for animal husbandry and animal feed may reduce meat contaminated with this substance and, therefore, increase consumer safety.

Distribution paths of endocrine disrupting phenolic compounds in waterbirds (Mergus merganser, Alca torda, Clangula hyemalis) from the Southern Baltic

This study determined the distribution of phenol derivatives in the organisms of waterbirds and the factors influencing their bioaccumulation and affinity to specific tissues. Concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) were determined in the brains, subcutaneous fat, kidneys, livers and pectoral muscles of goosanders Mergus merganser (GO), long-tailed ducks Clangula hyemalis (LO) and razorbills Alca torda (RA). The birds came from the winter by-catch (2014-2016) in the Southern Baltic. Different distribution routes of individual phenol derivatives in the birds were established, most likely due to their ability to bind to proteins and/or dissolve in lipids. BPA and 4-NP accumulated most in the muscles (BPA <2.0-223.0 ng^.g^-1 dw, 4-NP 26.0-476.4 ng^.g^-1 dw), livers (BPA <2.0-318.2 ng^.g^-1 dw, 4-NP 60.7-525.8 ng^.g^-1 dw), and kidneys (BPA <2.0-836.1 ng^.g^-1 dw, 4-NP 29.3-469.2 ng^.g^-1 dw), while 4-t-OP was stored mainly in the brains (2.6-341.1 ng^.g^-1 dw), subcutaneous fat (0.7-173.7 ng^.g^-1 dw) and livers (<0.5-698.8 ng^.g^-1 dw). The liver was the only organ where all compounds showed a positive correlation with each other and alkylphenols were also positively correlated with each other in tissues with high fat content (brains and subcutaneous fat), and negatively in muscles. Despite the different trophic levels of birds, the concentrations of phenol derivatives in the tissues between individual species in most cases did not differ significantly. However, between the species on a similar trophic level, the higher biomagnification coefficient was calculated for LO feeding on benthos, and the lower for RA feeding on pelagic fish (p < 0.05). The good condition of birds, resulting in large intestinal fat stores, promoted on the one hand the penetration of phenol derivatives from the intestine to the liver, and on the other hand their accumulation in subcutaneous fat, thereby protecting the brain.

Gastrointestinal and respiratory exposure of water birds to endocrine disrupting phenolic compounds

Aquatic birds found at the top of the trophic chain are exposed to xenobiotics present both in food and inhaled air. The aim of this study was to indicate and assess the routes and levels of exposure of aquatic birds to bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP). The birds constituting the study material (Clangula hyemalis, Alca torda, Mergus merganser) originated from by-catches (winter 2014-2016) in the Southern Baltic. The studies show that the exposure of birds to phenol derivatives is determined by the specifics of a compound, the habitat area, trophic level and food consumed. BPA was characterized by the highest intestinal concentrations in all birds (6.6-1176.2 ng^.g^-1 dw). Higher concentrations of 4-t-OP were determined in the lungs of birds from the eastern part of the Southern Baltic (9.1-135.7 ng^.g^-1 dw) and in the intestines of birds from the western part (<0.5-191.4 ng^.g^-1 dw). In the case of 4-NP, higher concentrations were found in the intestines of carnivorous species (64.9-524.5 ng^.g^-1 dw), and the lungs of benthos-eating species (39.4-399.7 ng^.g^-1 dw). The intestines that were most burdened with 4-NP were those of birds from the highest trophic level. Correlations between the concentrations of phenol derivatives in the blood and the intestines and lungs indicated that birds are exposed to the penetration of phenol derivatives through the digestive and respiratory tracts. BPA and 4-NP were characterized by the highest concentrations in the intestines and lungs, whereas 4-t-OP in blood (3.2-39.2 ng^.cm^-3), which may indicate the largest endocrine potential of this compound in birds. Significant differences in phenol derivatives concentrations in the intestines and lungs of birds from the western and eastern part of the Southern Baltic, shows that these tissues can be useful for assessing the contamination of the environment with EDCs.

Estimation of native and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seabirds from the south coast of the Baltic Sea

Native and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were examined in the muscle, liver, kidneys, and lungs of greater scaup (Aythya marila) and great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus). Both species showed differences in distribution and profiles among the tissues. The highest ƩPAH concentrations were in the scaup lungs and the grebe kidneys (20 and 19 ng g^-1 wet weight, respectively). Alkylated derivatives were in the range of 61 to 77% of ΣPAHs in both species. Differences in PAH profiles between birds, analyzed by PCA, were probably results of metabolic capability, not various diet. In comparison to available data from other regions of the world, PAH levels in investigated species are relatively low and do not pose a threat to birds themselves.

Bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to penguins on the coast of southeastern Brazil

Bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on São Paulo state coast (southeastern Brazil) was evaluated through the analysis of biliary metabolites in Spheniscus magellanicus (n = 79). The animals analyzed in present study were either found dead during beach monitoring procedures or died at rehabilitation centers. Analyses of naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) metabolites were performed using a high-performance liquid chromatograph equipped with fluorescence detectors. Total metabolite (TM) concentrations ranged from below the method quantification limit to 270 μg g^-1 of bile. TM concentrations were mainly composed of NAP metabolites, followed by PHE metabolites. BaP metabolites were detected in only two samples. This is the first study using PAHs metabolites in S. magellanicus to assess the bioavailability of these compounds in coastal regions.

Could biotransport be an important pathway in the transfer of phenol derivatives into the coastal zone and aquatic system of the Southern Baltic?

Bird guano and the faeces of marine mammals appear to be a significant yet undisclosed biotransporter of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in the marine environment. The authors determined the concentration of bisphenol A (BPA), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) removed from birds and seals in their droppings into the coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk (Southern Baltic Sea).The research was carried out on samples of bird guano collected during the breeding season and after in 2016 at nesting sites, as well as on faecal samples from grey seals (Halichoerus grypus grypus) living in the Seal Centre of the Marine Station in Hel between 2014 and 2018. Measurements were carried out using high performance chromatography with fluorescence detector. Results have shown that the presence of seabird habitats and grey seal colonies in the coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk can have an impact on the pollution of the seashore (beach sand, bottom sediment and surface seawater) with phenol derivatives. The concentrations of BPA, 4-t-OP and 4-NP ranged from 0.1 to 32.97 ng∙g^-1dw in sediment and beach sand, and from 0.23 to over 800 ng dm^-3 in seawater. In the cases of bisphenol A and 4-tert-octylphenol safe concentration levels in the waters were exceeded. Bisphenol A concentrations were almost always found to be the highest. This was also noted in bird guano and seal faeces, although it was found to be much higher in the seal faeces - average 10149.79 ng g^-1 dw, than in bird guano. An experiment conducted to assess BPA, 4-t-OP, 4-NP leaching from bird guano and seal faeces into seawater, also confirmed the importance of animal excrement in the circulation of these compounds in the marine ecosystem. The highest % of leaching related to BPA was noted at 20 °C and reached 84%. The lowest % of leaching was for 4-nonylphenol (44%).
